Nobody’s been using Latin much — at least not for a couple hundred years — so the Britis

Nobody’s been using Latin much — at least not for a couple hundred years — so the British have taken possession of it.

Americans could never own Latin. For one thing, the Romans never even visited New York. And the Brits had already beaten them to it. By the time America was breaking free of England, Latin was already a wholly-owned subsidiary of English. This is ironic, because if the Romans had kept their empire intact a bit longer, English would have been an obscure Germanic dialect.

The Brits own Latin. They write all the textbooks. The definitive texts of Roman authors are the Oxford editions. In movies, Romans almost always speak with a British accent. Even Russell Crowe, who is Australian, followed this rule.

If America wants to take over any language, it should be Dutch. After all, New York used to be called Nieuw Amsterdam. It was the capital of Nieuw Nederland, which took up a good part of what is now New England. There are all sorts of Dutch names on maps of New York: Brooklyn, the Bronx, Coney Island, the Bowery, Yonkers. Like the Romans, the Dutch once ruled a mighty empire. And they make great chocolate, something the Romans never mastered, since they never got around to conquering Mexico.

Dutch is a beautiful language, quite similar to English, but without as many annoying spelling rules. It’s almost impossible to be unpleasant while speaking Dutch. Even insults sound just moderately rude in Nederlands.

Julius Caesar and his army did visit England —Britannia to them — and left all sorts of ruins to prove they had occupied the island (except for Scotland, because —well, why bother?) Because of their long acquaintance with the Romans, the British were in a position to snatch up Latin when the barbarians set it out on the bargains table.

As a result, once English grammarians got around to dissecting their own language, Latin seemed infinitely more logical. Many rules of English grammar spring from the realities of Latin. For example, the rule ‘never split an infinitive.’ In Latin, one can’t split an infinitive because it is one word. English infinitives are always two words: to go, to see, to want. Following this rule replaces normal expressions such as ‘to boldly go where no man has gone before’ with odd phrasings — ‘boldly to go’ or ‘to go boldly.’ What do we do with “We expect the population to more than double”? Dax is not willing to boldly attempt a rewording of that sentence.

Another example is prepositions. As we all know, “A preposition is something you never end a sentence with.” The Romans never did. They knew that ‘pre-’ means before, and saw no reason to put them anywhere else.

But English is structurally a Germanic language, with lots of phrasal verbs like ‘be afraid of’ and ‘be proud of.’ In Latin these are one word – timere, superbire – and take either a direct object (not a prepositional phrase) or some sort of ablative (means, cause, etc.) An English writer can reword sentences to avoid putting prepositions at the end, but sometimes it sounds worse than the original ‘incorrect’ sentence, especially if it’s a question. “Who are you talking about?” becomes “About whom are you talking?”

Dax is a Latinist; he tries to follow the rules, however silly it makes him sound. He avoids splitting infinitives and leaving prepositions hanging onto the end of a sentence, but normal people give him strange looks. For a while he even gave up contractions, but it made him sound like a robot. He still tries to pronounce double consonants, and pronounces the silent ‘t’ in ‘often’ and ‘subtle.’ People frequently ask him, “What country did you grow up in?”

His reply is always the same: “I think you mean, ‘Up in what country did you grow?’”

But back to New Amsterdam. The editors of Edaxicon would like to make the Dutch an offer: we want your language. You may keep using it, of course. We will simply borrow its grammar and spelling rules and apply them to English, begin promoting Dutch in our schools, and change place names back to the original Dutch.

The benefits to Americans? We can stop getting into arguments about prepositions and infinitives. We can stop feeling ashamed that we don’t know what a declension is. We will be much nicer people.

At 6:13 this morning, I typed word # 50,002.
I am most pleased with the ending, which just dropped out of nowhere. As I was thinking that it would take a couple thousand more words to bring it all to a conclusion, I suddenly saw the end. I may add a short epilogue, just to clarify a couple things, but I am happy with the way it turned out.
The writing needs tons of revision.
The plot is fine, and with some re-working, will make a good story.
The characters are okay. Now that I have a better idea who they all are, it will be easier to go back and look at their dialog and actions and fix inconsistencies.
But it’s done.
It’s not five chapters, meticulously honed to perfection and nowhere near completion. It is a complete novel. I have no pretensions about it being a great work of literature, but it has potential.
Now what?
I have several unfinished projects that might benefit from some of the discipline I’ve taught myself in the last 19 days.
As far as the Nano goes, January is National Novel Revision Month, I think. By then I may be ready to look at it again.
Till then… ?

Dollar against the Swiss trading lower at 1.0295 Ben Bernanke’s speech in Washington has been the main story for the market all morning. The speech was made last night during the Asian trading time zone and resulted in a reversal of the lower dollar trend. Some traders used it as an excuse to take profit on their short positions. Bernanke said that he was prepared to implement exit strategies and tighten monetary policy but now is not the time as he does not see sufficient evidence yet in the economic recovery for them to be implemented. He gave no indication on timing or the pace of the exit strategy but it will be when the time is right and when he sees stronger evidence of the economic recovery. Jean-Claude Trichet saying the economy shows signs of stabilization. The recovery ahead will be very gradual and could still involve substantial risks. He adds that constant monitoring of the financial system resilience should be part of the new regime. He concludes “Thrifty, prudent housekeeping is Europe’s main safeguard against the risk of a bubble economy”. The London FTSE 100 Index added 0.90 per cent to reach 5154.64 while in Paris the CAC 40 rose 1.34 per cent to 3806.81. The Frankfurt DAX also gained 1.34 per cent to reach 5716.54.

Elsewhere there were gains of 0.79 per cent in Madrid, 1.40 per cent in Brussels, 0.73 per cent on the Swiss Market Index, 1.07 per cent in Milan and 1.79 per cent in Amsterdam.

US shares also forged higher as the market was energised by an earnings report from aluminum maker Alcoa showing a surprise return to profits.

The Alcoa report, the first from a blue-chip firm for the third quarter, offered hope that companies are regaining health as the economy improves.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average at mid-day had risen 1.04 per cent to 9827.15 while the tech-heavy Nasdaq advanced 1.00 per cent to 2126.35.

Patrick O’Hare at Briefing.com said Alcoa’s report late Wednesday “ceremoniously kicked off the third quarter reporting period. At the same time, it kicked more than a few short sellers in the mouth as the aluminum maker said mostly all the right things.”

The company said its net income was $77 million or eight cents a share in the quarter ended September, after three losing quarters.

O’Hare said Alcoa also offered an upbeat outlook for aluminum consumption, another sign of an improving global economy.

The market was also encouraged by news that initial claims for US jobless benefits in the week ended October 3 fell to a nine-month low of 521,000, another encouraging sign.

The report “reaffirms that labour market conditions are improving,” said Michael Bratus at Moody's Economy.com.

Among stocks in focus, Alcoa rallied 3.31 per cent to $US14.67, extending its rally of more than 10 per cent this week.

PepsiCo, which also reported earnings, fell 1.67 per cent to $US60.15 after the beverage and snacks maker reported a better-than-expected profit of $US1.72 billion but said it is “still feeling the pinch of the global recession.”

In London mining companies were among the day’s big winners on the back of rising commodity prices. Vedanta gained 4.04 pencent to reach 2.190 pence.

The auto sector led the way in Paris, with Peugeot adding 4.68 per cent to end the session at 21.585 euros while rival Renault gained 3.897 per cent to close at 33.625 euros.

In Frankfurt steel makers ThyssenKrupp and Salzgitter drew strength from the Alcoa results, the former adding 4.04 per cent to 23.96 euros and the latter 2.71 per cent to 68.30 euros.

Earlier in the day in Asia Tokyo’s benchmark Nikkei-225 Index closed up 0.34 per cent to 9832.47 points on Thursday after the strong yen took some of the shine off the positive lead overnight from Wall Street.

I’ve passed 44000 words — I’m not ready to call this the homestretch, but it feels good to have just 6000 to go and 15 days to write them.
What I’ve been thinking about is this: What next?
Writing withdrawal is a definite possibility. After spending every day figuring out my 2000+ words, I will need something to keep me busy. I could do another NaNo, but I’m not sure the intensity of this month can be duplicated without the external structure of a competition.
Bad Habits: I had bad habits before I started NaNo, and they haven’t gone away. Using too many words to say things, abusing adverbs, dialog tags — all these are things I am aware of. I wonder what new flaws I will observe as I re-write this novel?
Good habits: I have disciplined myself, found time in every day to do this task. I have learned to view writing as a task, not waiting for the mood or inspiration to strike. I am my own muse.
Where does this all leave me?
I have a novel that will be finished by Friday, and in need of much revision.
I have a couple of novels in process which can benefit from some disciplined focus and organization.
To be a writer, you have to write. It’s a job. A really great job that hardly pays anything but makes me happy.

So today, while I was taking a much needed nap, trying to get over this cold before it actually hit me, I was awoken to the sound of an IM. I was going to ignore it, but I opened my eyes to see who it was… it was my cousin Spencer (@spenc3r)! In the beginning of October, he had left for USMC Officer Candidates School in Quantico, VA. I hadn’t had any communication with him except the little tid-bits of information I got from his parents.

Spencer at USMC OCS

It was wonderful to hear from him. Here is how our conversation went:

turbulents0: I heard about Talyn
HEYitsmeTC: how are you doing?
HEYitsmeTC: yeah… but we can talk about that when you get back
turbulents0: also heard you’re planning on getting 2 dogs now
HEYitsmeTC: yeah i have a deposit on one dog already…
turbulents0: I’ll call you. it will probably use less battery haha

And that he did. We spent about half an hour on the phone together, catching up on all the things he has been doing during his training. We didn’t talk much about Talyn, however he already knew. And he knew about my plans on getting another puppy. He asked what kind of dog I would be getting and I told him it was another beagle. I think he was a little disappointed that I wasn’t getting a different kind of dog, but I explained to him that when I had been looking for Talyn, I researched all kinds of breeds of dogs before picking what I thought was the perfect dog for me, the beagle. Nothing much had changed between that original research and now, so I was going to continue to stick with the beagle.

Then I proceeded to tell him the name I had picked, Dax. He laughed and explained to me that ‘Dax’ was the name he had picked back when he had wanted to get a dog. We both thought it was just the strangest thing that we independently found the name Dax and thought it would be a good name for a dog. He did give me his full approval for using the name, which is good because I would have used it anyways – since the name has a lot meaning for me, and the breeder is already calling him Dax.

We talked for a while more and I discovered that he truly enjoyed receiving mail from “the outside world.” He said the letters he got started sounding like journal entries, but that it was nice because it could take him away from the tough conditions he was having to endure. I promised to write more than I had been. And he welcomes letters from anyone who would write to him:

2189 Elrod Avenue

He had to go to catch the $2 movie on base, so we said our good-byes. So we hung up and I went back to sleep.

Market Commentary November 13, 2009 It was yet another great Friday trading session for the School o

Market Commentary November 13, 2009

It was yet another great Friday trading session for the School of Trade! We same some great volatility in the markets and enough in the Crude Oil market alone to satisfy all of our trading needs. We took a total of 6 trades today, all of which were executed in the Crude Oil market! We managed to navigate through all the news events this morning fairly well, the Canadian news especially, due to its great impact on the Crude Oil market (Identify Market Sentiment For Day Trading Futures). With the majority of the news being released at 9:30am EST as well as 10:55am EST, we really had a great window of available trading time. We ended up going 5 for 6, (the sixth trade being a scratch) for a total of $460 in profits!

The first Crude Oil (Symbol CL) trade of the morning came at 9:10am EST. The market in general sold off pretty heavily yesterday, and today we weren’t quite sure what to expect, because the possibility of a pullback in the market was inevitable, and today could have been that day. Looking back in the European trading session, it looked as if today was the day, but the rally was ever so brief, and the sellers once again jumped in the market to push price even further downward. By the time the U.S open outcry pits began trading at 9:00am EST, the market was testing yesterday’s lows around the $76/barrel range. This range provided the market with a strong base for price to bounce off of today, and sellers seemed to find a bottom for the time being around $75.60. As price bounced off yesterday’s lows, we initially looked for a long position in the market, but as we continued to watch our technical indicators, they proved to be correct in telling us sellers were about to change the short term trend (Price Patterns Technical Analysis Futures Video). With more sellers entering the market, we decided to join them at 9:10am EST with a 2-step short pattern. Our order was executed with a basis of 75.93 and price action soon filled out first profit target at +4 ticks (2 contracts) for a total of +8 ticks ($80).

The second trade of the morning came after the U.S Equities market opening at 9:30am EST, as well as the passing of some major Canadian news, their Trade Balance to be exact, which would most certainly have a strong affect on the Crude Oil market. After the added volatility in the market had passed and price action once again returned to its norm, we looked to enter the market yet again (3 Key Components To A Day Trading System Video). We found a great long set-up at 9:45am EST, taking a Breaker pattern with the short term trend at 76.20. With our order being promptly executed, the market didn’t waste much time in filling our first profit target of +4 ticks (2 contracts) for a total of +8 ticks ($80).

Our third trade on the Crude Oil came shortly after our second, and in the same direction as well; to the long side. With price action hitting the lows of the day once again, the ticker tape told the story for this trade, by rejecting the further selling pressure at the lows, meaning the market could only go one direction, up ( Crude Oil Futures Day Trading Video). At 10:03am EST we entered the market long with a Breaker price pattern. After price had broken our trigger line, we entered the market at a basis of 75.88 and were able to get filled, what seemed like almost instantly, for +8 ticks (1 contract) and another +2 ticks (3 contracts) for a total of +14 ticks ($140)!

The fourth trade on the Crude Oil (Symbol CL) came roughly a half hour later, once the market decided on an overall direction to move in, instead of just consolidating at its daily lows (Swing-High Swing-Low Technical Analysis Day Trading Futures Video). With the buyer pressure ever building in the market off the lows, it was only a matter of time before the market would try and take back some of its sell off for the day. When the buyers looked to finally be pushing price back up, we looked to enter the market with the trend as well. At 10:43am EST we were finally able to see a School of Trade price pattern to enter the market long, with the Breaker. We entered the market at a price of 76.21 and were able to scalp off some quick profits of +4 ticks (2 contracts) for a total of +8 ticks ($80).

The fifth trade of the day was placed only minutes after our previous one. The buyers had quite a rally since our previous trade, and from the looks of the price action, were beginning to take profits (Scalping Futures Day Trading Video). With a clear double top in price forming, we quickly looked to exploit this short term pullback, and entered the market short at 10:47am EST with a 2-step pattern. Our order was executed at a basis of 76.13 and we were able to pick up +4 ticks (2 contracts) rather quickly for a total of +8 ticks ($80).

The sixth and final trade of the morning was taken closer to the U.S lunch hours and the market’s price action looked to be slowing down ever so slightly (Sideways Market Day Trading Futures). More volume though seemed to enter the market briefly into the 11:00am EST hour, sending the market lower, and giving us one last opportunity to short the market. We decided to enter in the direction of the trend, which was short, with a Breaker pattern at 11:12am EST. With the order being filled at 76.25, we carefully monitored price to see if there was going to be any real follow through to the short side. Unfortunately, price action slowed even further, and we knew it was time to get out of the trade before we risked taking a loss. So, we decided to close our order early and take a scratch trade +/- 0 ticks.

Whoop! 30000 words!

What has been interesting about this whole Nanowrimo process has been the generation of ideas.

I generally ponder things as I write, toss around ideas and weigh them before I start inking them.

Slow.

This headlong rush of writing hasn’t allowed me to hit pause and ponder before proceeding. I have definitely produced a lot of crap – stylistically, to be sure. But I’ve produced a passable plot, and a number of really odd, off the wall ideas. Continually pushing on has forced me not to think so hard. The first idea that pops up – I grab it and go. I haven’t been much of a grab-and-go writer before this. I think I like it.

What has saved my plot is an outline. I have never done an outline before, and I’m finding it quite useful. I think I may try it again.

The biggest thing I have learned from all this is that writing is a business, and I can crank out words when I need to. I can detach myself from characters and plot enough to keep myself from getting stuck. I apologize to my characters for some of the things I’ve gotten them into. Be patient, my children. I will make it all better in the re-write.

Nano has made writing exciting again. I get up at four each morning and write for two hours, never knowing what I will produce. The surprise is worth the lack of sleep.

I wish all my fellow nanoers good luck – I hope you are having as much fun as I am!

Market Commentary November 10, 2009 Well it was another great day of trading for all of us at the Sc

Market Commentary November 10, 2009

Well it was another great day of trading for all of us at the School of Trade! There weren’t too many news events to worry about in the markets today, really with the exception of only a few members of the FOMC committee speaking around 10:00 and 11:00am EST. We really didn’t see too much disruption in the price action of the markets we traded; who knows, maybe traders are finally starting to ignore these guys! Either way, it didn’t stop us from having a great day in the markets, going 5 for 5 with a total profit of $720, and all being done with a trade account as little as $4,000! (That’s almost a 20% return on your account today).

Our first trade of the morning came earlier than usual, and was a refreshing way to start our trading off with some consistent profits on the Gold market (Symbol GC). As I am writing this, the Gold market has not made new all time highs today; I know a shocker right! But don’t worry there were still some great swings in the market this morning for us to take some trades. The gold market has kept a rather strong base today right around the $1100/oz range, and by the end of trading it will be easy to see that strong buyers came across the tape to keep the market up most of the day (Identify Market Sentiment For Day Trading Futures). Earlier this morning though, after breaking new highs for the day, it was clear for us to see, while reading the ticker tape, that the buyers would not hold the market up for long, and so we watched closely to spot a potential School of Trade set-up. We didn’t have to wait too long either, as the gold market was seemingly hitting a new high, the buying pressure on our P.O.T indicator began to slow, and we entered the market with a trend reversal trade called the 2-Step, to the short side. Our order was executed at 8:30am EST with a basis of 1103.2; which was a great entry price to have because soon after the market took off to the down side, giving us the ability to take profits at +4 ticks (2 contracts) +8 ticks and our final contract getting us an additional +8 ticks, for a total of +24 ticks ($240).

Our next trade did not occur until a few hours later, due to the U.S markets opening up and the FOMC decided to speak, we waited patiently for the right opportunity to show itself in the market. As we began to scan the markets for a possible set-up, we found one in the Crude Oil (Symbol CL). At 10:20am EST we were finally given a set-up to take, with a Breaker pattern long, this was a little higher risk for us than usual, but with the ticker tape showing us buyers were entering the market strongly, we decided to enter ( Crude Oil Futures Day Trading Video). Our order was executed at 80.31 and we were able to scalp off a few ticks before the market pulled back on us, giving us profits of +4 ticks (2 contracts) for a total of +8 ticks ($80).

At this time in the morning, the markets really began to move, giving us some great trading opportunities. Our next trade also came on the Crude Oil (Symbol CL). The market had begun to find a top shortly after our previous trade and the sellers were waiting patiently to reverse the market. We began to notice this change in momentum from reading the ticker tape as well as our Pace of the Tape indicator and decided to join the sellers by entering the market with a 2-step short order (Price Patterns Technical Analysis Futures Video). At 10:31am EST our trade was executed with a basis of 80.40 to the short side; without even giving us time to react, the market quickly dropped and filled our first target of +4 ticks (2 contracts) before pulling back slightly and closing our order out for a total profit of +8 ticks ($80).

The fourth trade of the morning, and also on the Crude Oil, came only minutes after our previous trade and once again to the short side (Scalping Futures Day Trading Video). After our third trade had been executed, the Crude Oil market had continued its downward trend, and so we instinctively looked to enter the market with that trend. With selling pressure still flowing into the market, we placed a short order to be executed at 80.22. With our sell order being executed at 10:38am EST, the market continued its sell off, allowing us to lock in profits for our trade account at +4 ticks (2 contracts) for a total of +8 ticks ($80).

The fifth and final trade of our morning came on the Gold market (Symbol GC). Since our first trade on the Gold market, price action had been pushed up even further, making new daily highs into the U.S market openings (Gold Futures Day Trading Video). The buyers continued this trend later into the morning, but we soon noticed that more sellers were taking positions and more buyers were taking profits. Seeing this change in momentum, we began looking to identify a possible short trade. At 10:50am EST we finally were able to execute our order to the down side with a Breaker price pattern. With our trade being executed at a basis of 1106.0, we caught the sell off at the perfect time, because sellers soon flooded the market, giving us the ability to take profits at all three of our targets for +4 ticks (2 contracts) +8 ticks and another +8 ticks, giving us a total of +24 ticks on our final trade of the day ($240).

So, first I designed this hat in September:

And just as I finished it, I saw this. I thought “okay, it’s constructed differently; I’ll contact Alex and see if she’s alright with my version” and I did and she was. I decided I’d offer three sizes too. Then this. And, just this morning, this one. I don’t know how I didn’t come across these patterns earlier! So I’ll just write it up in one size and offer the pdf for free on Ravelry. It should be good practice at any rate.

I made Dax a hat and beard and dressed him as a gnome for Halloween. It was cheap and easy and he liked it much better than the lion costume we tried first!

I tried so hard to get a picture of him straight on, looking at the camera, standing still for just one second, just one picture, please! but it is completely impossible right now! He is always on the move.

And I finished up his Loch Ness Monster too. I am just glad to have finished it. Hansi wrote a great pattern and the directions aren’t hard to follow, but my goodness does the knitting require some patience!

I do feel like knitting some more toys now; maybe Dax will get an owl or a monster for Christmas. He loves stuffed animals and squishy pillows. But next time I am picking fat yarn and needles!

Yesterday I started making some felted slippers–I saw on some Ravelry project pages that people were knitting them up in only a few hours, and I thought it would take me much longer, but no! These go super fast! I just have to finish the seaming and they will be ready to felt. They are also super ugly before felting! So I haven’t taken a picture yet!

Oh geez, I almost forgot–I’ve also been working on an awesome project with one of Derrick’s family members. It’s kind of a secret at the moment but it involves corn, knitting, and a football team. I hope it all works out and I will be sure to share pictures when it comes to fruition .

Time to divulge some truth. I do not like pomades. Yessir. I do not adhere to the wonders of the grease as I once did when these strands were once relaxed. Now though, when I say ‘grease‘ you have to understand something, maybe even take a short trip back with me to a time when we were all little brown girls getting our hair parted, braided & laced up with bows for kindergarten to KNOW of what I speak. My visual may be different from yours, my two french braids may have even been a bit more crooked, but I hint and point to that fanciful pic on the left…you’ll hopefully understand where it all began.

I’m a product of the ’80’s, the decade of cultural identity & Carebears. Rainbowbright & L.A. Gear…all the good stuff. Hecked if I sound old, yet in those days mothers like my Mum used the powers of DAX to cure everything a hot comb couldn’t. I promise you, the smell of this stuff still lingers in the child-full colors of my mind…the memories are both good and cringe appropriate. After my first perm relaxer in the 6th grade, I continued the greasy tradition, using the DAX to store the kitchen hairs that typically escaped my dollar scrunchy.

There really was no reason to cease the grease over the years, but in High School the idea of using Let’s JAM! to obtain that slicked back grown look was much too tempting. But even that only lasted until my hairline and remaining baby hairs screamed at me to stop the crazy and just let my Dominican Hairstylist take the wheel.

Wow, so I say all that to say that I’ve quietly reunited with a lost love in the form of Oyin’s Burnt Sugar Pomade! Wooozah! I’ve kept this love under wraps for a few months because…well it was really that hard for me to get my nose physically out of the jar. If you’ve already sampled this stuff, you might just get it.

Some have compared it to the smell of warm pancakes slathered with maple syrup…oh my. I won’t disagree with the consensus, but the scent is strong enough to force you into the worst food cravings if you were born with a sweet tooth, or just discovering the joys of comfort food. It’s sniff worthy to the tenth degree, and I can’t get enough!

As per usual, the gist from the site:

Does your hair love oils? Our “Burnt Sugar” Pomade is a nourishing all-vegetable pomade and styling product named for the uniquely translucent, shimmery quality of warm, homemade caramel.

Similar in texture to an old school ‘hair grease,’ This blend of oils, butters, and veggie waxes acts as a humectant and protectant for hair, increasing shine to a high glossy sheen and locking in moisture. It’s packed with essential fatty acids to nourish scalp, and actually sinks into your hair and skin for a long lasting, non-greasy feeling. It’s great for braids, imparts shine and moisture to loose hair, brushes nicely into the hairline for a glossy finish, and adds luster to locks!

This was an impulse Oyin buy many months ago when I began the search for the now infamous Honey Hemp conditioner. A store in my neighborhood that typically stocked up was out, so I compensated by purchasing the pomade, never really thinking it’d be a gem because…well, my history with pomades runs a bit deep. The consistency is very similar to a traditional pomade, it might even be a bit more hardened before first use, but is also quick to emulsify and spreads fairly easily.

A l’il dab will do so very much to impart crazy duty shine, and how I’ve been using it lately to seal my ends when needed after a wash, or even midweek when the twists begin to slightly unravel. The Summer months found me a bit heavy handed with the pomade, using it to slather over the crown of my twist-out fro, and I won’t lie…the best part was leaving a scent trail every which way I turned…forewarning, heads will turn if you dabble more than a l’il.

But what I love best about the pomade is it’s truest claim, NON-GREASY! It instantly sinks into the hair/scalp, letting the hair absorb all the goodness, leaving hair shinny and locking in any existing moisture in the hair. It’s a natural humectant which scientifically means it draws moisture from the air, pulling in what’s needed to moisturize the hair. In winter this can signal some trouble if the the air where you live is naturally dry, yet using the pomade while in the run of protective styling helps to avoid this slight, at least for me.

In the vid below, Jamyla and her hubby explain the best ways in which to winterize your current humectant stash if your hair is not adjusting. (Added Oyin Coupon code @ the end of vid!)

If you’re not a scent person, you will not be entertained by this product. The site description hints to a ’subtly sweet fragrance,’ and my trigger foot is down to say….Ummm…no. On my best days I do not mind smelling like a floating pancake so it suits a purpose in my PJ stash, but if you’ve ever walked by a candle store and gone (WTH!!), abort this mission & wait until the lovely Jamyla introduces a scent free version. Either way, disappointment is not an option. A 4oz jar runs $10 while the new larger 8oz size will set you back $16.
