Let me preface this by saying… I am not a tv guy.

If you’ve followed this blog any, you know that.

I can, and routinely do, go months without watching TV. I in fact do not own a tv. But I do own laptops and quite an extensive DVD collection. I keep abreast of what people are saying is hot or good in TV land, and eventually get around to trying the DVDs.

And usually all these hyped shows… I’m unimpressed.

LOST, 24, PRISON BREAK, HEROES all shows I’ve heard rapturous praise, and finally seen… they’re uneven at best, with some great episodes, but mostly a lot of filler, sub-par episodes.

THE WIRE is another show that I heard so much praise for, and finally watched it cannot hold a candle to its predecessor HOMICIDE.

Typically it’s the British Television shows that I think are currently knocking it out the park. Shows like HUSTLE and ULTRAVIOLET and JEKYLL and TORCHWOOD: CHILDREN OF EARTH. Because their seasons are tight, they avoid the filler and weak episodes so common to American Television seasons.

There are exceptions, a few American shows, that are televison at its finest.

DAY BREAK is one of those shows.

To say it’s 24 meets Groundhog Day, gives you a crude and unwieldy signpost, and ultimately a lacking one. It is those two things, those two vague and well worn themes, but done right and brilliantly and strong for the whole season.

I have things to do, and places to go, and I cannot stop watching the bloody DVDs.

It’s BRILLIANT!

So of course it was canceled in one season.

I mean multi-ethnic cast, strong Black lead character… Oh please cancel me now, and let’s leave on crap like SMALLVILLE, or another CSI or LAW AND ORDER.

But while it may have only been one season, at least is was a GREAT FRIGGING SEASON!

Try it for yourself. And don’t forget to listen to all the commentaries, pretty great stuff.

Tuesday: Sci Fi Exploration

After years of attempting to debut a successful science fiction pilot, the Big 5 networks seem to have accepted defeat at the hands of cable television. Viewers proved they are not interested in the sci fi fare offered by broadcast networks – “Reaper,” “Journeyman,” “Bionic Woman,” “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles,” and “Day Break” are among the sci fi shows that failed to make more than two seasons in the past three years. Instead, sci fi diehards turn to SyFy and BBC America to get their fix.

What does this mean for Doc Sonya’s recommendations to you? Since we’re exploring strictly broadcast shows, this means there are only a handful of sci fi shows even on the air, and of those, only one gets my recommendation.

Time to break up with…

• “Heroes”
  “Heroes” is a classic example of a show that debuted a phenomenal first season, became too hyped, and suddenly failed to live up to its expectations. While it is somewhat expected for shows to experience a sophomore slump, “Heroes” never climbed out of the pitiful ditch it dug itself into. Now in season four, “Heroes” is exploring Claire’s sexuality (yawn), killing off/bringing back to life Nathan and Hiro (like they’re really going to kill off series regulars), and failing to capitalize on its breakout star, Zachary Quinto.

Bottom Line: Grab season one on DVD; skip the rest.

Flings: Don’t require a whole lot of commitment from you. If it’s on, watch it. If you get distracted by something shiny, you probably won’t miss too much.

• “Flash Forward”

Flash Forward is ABC’s follow-up to megahit “Lost.” While it lacks the flair, intrigue, and mythology of Lost, “Flash Forward” has a fascinating premise – the issue is whether the execution is good so far.
The concept is that for two minutes and 17 seconds, everyone in the entire world blacked out and caught a glimpse of their lives six months in the future. Some premonitions were good, others bad, some intriguing, and some nonexistent. This show reminds me of CBS fan-favorite “Jericho” (2006-2008), which chronicled an isolated town dealing with a nuclear terrorist attack in America.

Bottom line: “FlashForward” would make for a fun disaster/action movie, but as a TV serial, it needs to pick up the pace and make the characters into people we actually care about, or it’ll meet “Jericho”’s demise.

Casual dating: These shows are not the crème de la crème of the genre, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have the potential. These are campy and/or guilty pleasures, just short of appointment TV but good enough that you’ll stick around to see the end of the episode. Feel free to indulge if you like what you see.

• “The Vampire Diaries”
  This show is the CW’s response to the vampire trend, and for once, it seems like the CW actually made a decent creative decision. Based on the ’90s novels of the same name,”The Vampire Diaries” follows Elena, a teenager whose parents recently died in a car crash, as she navigates high school – with a vampire (no one knows, of course). Oh, and the vamp’s devious older brother spooks the town too.I like Ian Somerhalder (Boone from “Lost”) as older brother Damon. The rest of the characters, however, are written poorly and stereotypically; I wouldn’t be surprised if the character’s name on the script reads Best Friend or Main Character or Good Vampire. We don’t get a sense of a three-dimensional person on the show. We just see how an undeveloped personality reacts to events.

   

  Bottom Line: I won’t deny it’s a good choice for those into the vampire thing. However, for a similar premise but better characters/plots/actors, check out the WB’s “Roswell” on DVD. You won’t regret it

• “Fringe”
  “Fringe” was a huge critical accolade when it debuted last fall, but the furor seems to have died down a bit since then. The show is about a team that investigates (you guessed it) the paranormal. “Fringe” does well with the mythology, meaning the overarching storyline is strong, sensational, and sometimes surprising. However, given that “Fringe” comes from “Alias” and “Lost” creator J.J. Abrams, I don’t think it is living up to its potential.Bottom Line: It’s a slightly more difficult show to get into than, say, “The Vampire Diaries.” It’s also got a more serious overtone. Not bad for a show in its sophomore season, but it certainly has yet to find what it is creatively capable of.

Long-term dating: Arguably the best show currently on television…

• “Supernatural”
  “Supernatural” debuted on The WB in 2005, the WB’s final year as a network. It stars my future husband Jensen Ackles Dean and Jared Padalecki as Sam, brothers who hunt things that go bump in the night. In a nutshell, Dean and Sam lost their mother to an evil demon when they were kids, causing their father to delve into the world of the paranormal and raise his sons as hunters.What started out as a procedural premise quickly turned into the most campy, addictive show on TV. While the standalone episodes are fun, witty and often scary, “Supernatural” creator Eric Kripke’s true mastery is the show’s mythology. There is more to Dean and Sam than the show ever let on during the first season, and now that “Supernatural” is in its fifth (and potentially final) season, viewers can see the threads that were sewn nearly four years ago. The show is unafraid to throw certain stereotypes on their heads. For instance, this season the mythology is stopping God’s angels (they’re the antagonists) from unleashing the Apocalypse – oh, and while Sam and Dean are at it, they need to locate God and stop Lucifer from rising.

   

  Whatever the season’s mythology, “Supernatural”’s strength is undoubtedly the bond between Sam and Dean, which is unlike any portrayal I’ve ever seen on TV. One second, the brothers are pulling a prank on each another, and the next, they’re making deals with demons to save each other’s lives.

Bottom line: Still not convinced? TV Guide magazine critic Matt Roush recently wrote, “My decision to get busy and catch up on (the previous seasons of) Supernatural was the best call I made all year.”

It’s a grower, if you’ve heard of any.

We should have bitten our own tongues before insinuating that neosoul may be dead. An accidental stumble lead us to Muhsinah – a new raw talent that proves us otherwise. The American soulstress has recently released her latest “installation” of music. She calls them that because unlike the album-to-album releases most everyone does, she releases a record and then adds and edits along the way. It’s makes for a hard catalogue to track down, but one can’t judge an artist’s personal evolution.

Her music is a fusion of the best. From Erykah Badu to Lauren Hill to Maxwell. Some of her tracks are entirely looped backwards, which reminds us of Maxwell’s Embrya. Her latest single “Construction” demonstrates her strength in both genres – hip hop and soul. Her voice is not a blunt tool either. At certain times she sounds like India Arie, others a young Sarah Vaughn. Her past installation was Day.Break, which later became Day.Break 2.0. Her latest is titled Oscillations and, currently, it’s at it’s Sine level. Watch out for Muhsinah.

The poet here is asking his lover of the night to stay. He does not care for the light outside his window, he only cares to be with his lover, so much so that he says that the light from her eyes is light enough for him, he does not need daybreak, he does not need the sun, all he needs is for her to stay.

In a few short sentences, John Donne has brilliantly portrayed perhaps the most passionate of all love scenes.

Yes Kyon, you've done this before. It could also be said this would have worked in one episode too.

Yes, another post devoted to the time loop goodness that is the Endless Eight arc of 2nd series of The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi. Amongst the many topics that have been an expression of personal enjoyment going against a perceived notion that the arc could be trolling or just bad in general, or my own momentary decision to call the series itself “Endless Eight” and even a joke that the arc was approaching the running time of Groundhog Day, which has already happened. After commenting that I thought the format of the arc was all wrong, but could be enjoyed anyway, I’ve decided to take a look at how this arc could have been done.

Option 1: A Single Episode

Surely not a popular option for those who like the source material, but could this have been done in one episode? In order to do that, the reveal of the situation by Koizumi and Yuki would have to be included as well as removing much of the taste of summer from the episode as well. There would probably have to be a section with a second run through of the month where Kyon could be the hero in the end and get time moving again.

I would say this option would be feasible, but I have doubts as to whether it could make sense in 20 minutes.

Option 2: Endless Eight: The Movie

Driving a truck with a groundhog at the wheel leads to Phil Connors nth death of the day.

Since I brought up Groundhog Day earlier, so I’ll look at this as a potential option. Nearly everything could be kept in up to this point, but how would to a viewer. Throughout the arc, the events are kept the same for the most part with very small differences. Maintaining that interest would be difficult. Also, where Groundhog Day succeeded was in making each recurrence seem different, the Endless Eight arc seems to rely on aesthetic for most of each episode and only grasping for viewer interest in the dying minutes hoping Kyon can end it.

I would say a movie could work, but it would be more interesting if Kyon was also aware of the time loop.

Option 3: The Status Quo

In 1971, Doctor Who tried a time loop story line for the first time

Time loop television serials have never really lasted all that long. Doctor Who only limited itself to 4-6 episode arcs when it visited this topic. The 2006 drama Day Break lasted six episodes with its crime-based time loop before being pulled for poor ratings. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni covers a similar length of time with its arcs, but they are spread over several episodes and each is different enough to stand on its own.

I think I already stated that the current method wasn’t the best, but I’m not going to say Kyoto Animation isn’t allowed to manage their projects in as bad a way as they like.

Option 4: An OVA

Based on current evidence it wouldn’t make enough money in sales on anecdotal evidence, but I have been wrong about fanbases before.

Option 5: It doesn’t work period.

This will probably be a popular option for a lot of people. With the story being what it is, simple summer activities repeated many times, and with time loop being written with the only aware being a character who can’t drive an episode. Clearly the producers and even the author of the novels thought this could work, but I’ll hold off on DVD sales for that perspective.

Option 6: Anything else

While there are a few other visual media I could imagine this story playing out on (Endless Eight: The Silent Movie), I’ll leave it to the imagination of any one out there who wants to think of anything else and how it would work, even if it’s ironic.

Along the way she’s won an Emmy, pitched pilots, written screenplays, been on the team for the TV shows Day Break and Dexter and broken new ground on webisode stories for CBS’s Harper’s Island. Oh, and she almost died at 16. After that, the rest is easy. Listen in. It’s a good one.

The only true all-nighter these past four years, but for no reason at all: not for school, not a chatty sleepover, nada.  I’m so tired and I’ll wear it on my face all day probably.  I climbed into bed a quarter to midnight exhausted but I’d consumed caffeine a couple hours earlier.  No problem, I should’ve been fine by one or two, but by half past three I’d given up.  I updated my Cuaron blog and hoped that the ounce of productivity would help me sleep, but no such luck.  I ended up chatting with Gary until four.  He’s employed this summer.  Je lui envie, if that makes sense.  I got into bed after that,

but now the sun is out and I can see the reflection of orange and pink in the windows in the apartment building my bedroom faces.  I kind of give up now.  I don’t know when I can catch some shut eye without messing up my sleep schedule for the rest of the week.  Gary said thoughts were keeping him up.  I guess it was the same for me; thinking of how I’d be able to keep in touch with my fauvourite professors who I will rely on for references in grad school apps but wishing I could visit to say hi without asking for favours.

I find that news readers have trouble pronouncing “swine flu.”  I think it’s the combination of double consonnants.  Peutetre.  Have a nice day.

Se acabó. Es raro cuando uno sigue una serie poder decir esto. A veces porque la serie se alarga hasta el infinito y cuando llegas al final estás cansado. Otras, el final no está a la altura de la serie. En más de una ocasión el cierre es precipitado y deja demasiados cabos sueltos. Battlestar Galactica, una de las series de ciencia ficciónn más destacada de los últimos años ha llegado a su final, y lo ha hecho de una forma magistral y dejando un resultado final que cualquier serie querría como broche. “Daybreak, part II”, sin llegar a ser un episodio perfecto, es todo lo que se le puede pedir al final de una serie, hacerle pensar al espectador que ha merecido la pena seguir todo el camino hasta ahí, a pesar de los altibajos.

El episodio tiene de todo un poco. Unos flashbacks de escaso interés y bastante anticlimáticos, que de hecho ralentizan el arranque del episodio hasta puntos desesperantes. Escenas de redención, como cuando Gaius decide ir a repartir galletas, lo que da pie a las escenas románticas del episodio, con Cáprica, la relación más especial de la serie, por razones como las apariciones que ven, que terminan comprendiendo cuando se encuentran de un modo completo. Escenas de batallas espaciales, que si bien puede que no sea la mejor de la serie, se agradece ver algo de acción entre naves esta temporada. Escenas militares de asalto, con regusto a Alien II. Escenas de contenido filosófico, mitológicos, monólogos memorables, decisiones imprevistas, cambios inesperados, reacciones lógicas, centuriones enfrentados… y resoluciones.

La primera resolución es la del conflicto entre la humanidad y los Cylon. Tras rescatar a Hera Cavil se la quiere llevar para asegurar la supervivencia de su especie, Tigh le propone un trueque por una nave de resurrección, y parece que el final va a ser esa, vuelta a empezar, el ciclo sin fin. Y ahí empiezan las sorpresas, para empezar, Tyrol hace única aportación útil a la serie, matando, humanamente, a Torie por lo que le hizo a su mujer, ya que estamos con las muertes, destacar también la de Boomer cuando rescatan a Hera. El actode Tyrol impide que la historia se repita, provoca la derrota Cylon y Starbuck hace saltar la nave introduciendo en el teclado numérico la canción que le enseñaba su padre (cual Charlie de Lost en Through the looking glass), y de allí, de la colonia Cylon, a la Tierra, nuestra Tierra.

Quizá pueda parecer un poco tramposo que ya haya habido antes otra Tierra, la devastada, dónde se quedó D’Anna, pero como dice Adema (el bueno, el que mola, no Apollo) “la Tierra es un sueño, uno que he perseguido mucho tiempo, nos la hemos ganado”. La parte del episodio que transcurre en la Tierra es un epílogo, un epílogo que la serie necesita, que da explicaciones, que pueden gustar más o menos, pero explicaciones. La presencia de una fuerza superior, que como dice Baltar, da igual como la llamemos, está latente durante toda la serie, si ahora sirve para cerrar flecos, personalmente me parece bien, porque está bien contado, bien narrado, y no lo explican todo con pelos y señales.

Galactica es una serie de Ciencia Ficción, pero va más allá, es una serie que a lo largo de 4 temporadas, más especiales, ha explorado aspectos sociológicos, mitológicos, religiosos, políticos, militares, todo con un trasfondo de Space Opera, pero mucho más cercano al mundo real de lo que estamos acostumbrados, facilitando la identificación con personajes y situaciones, y al final, encuentran aquello por lo que llevan luchando tanto tiempo. Tras eso, se deja entrever que esta llegada da pie a la vida humana tal y como la entendemos.

Es cierto que todo el episodio destila referentes religiosos por todas partes, desde la aparición de emisarios como las proyecciones de Cáprica y Baltar, que ya habían aparecido a lo largo de la serie y habían hecho referencia a designio divinos, o la resurrección de Starbuck, que volvió de la muerte para cumplir su misión e irse. De todas formas, la amalgama de influencias socioculturales proveniente de distintas corrientes religiosas, convergen en elementos útiles para la serie. Poética es también, la intra-mitología, se han pasado toda la serie haciendo referencia a aquello del “líder moribundo”, para que al final, por suerte no sea Rosslin, sino Galactica, la que en su último movimiento llega a la tierra, para poner luego rumbo al sol y morir.

El último capítulo de Battlestar Galactica ha sido, en definitiva, un muy buen cierra de una muy buena serie, que ha tenido episodios muy buenos y episodios muy malos, que a veces ha carecido del ritmo necesario, pero que en los momentos importantes ha dado la talla como casi ninguna otra, y en su despedida, no iba a ser menos. Que la serie cierre en nuestro presente, con Baltar y Cáprica, y avances en robótica al ritmo de All Along the Watchtower, deja claro el carácter referencial y la crítica a la sociedad que la serie ha destilado.

Descanse en paz, por ahora.

Volvemos a hablar de lo que nos depara la televisión proximamente. Ya hicimos lo propio con Telecinco, Antena 3 y La2, y ahora es el turno de las novedades de Cuatro.

La ficción nacional es la asignatura pendiente de la cadena de Sogecable. Sus ficciones no han calado mucho entre el público y han desaparecido más pronto que tarde. Por ello, la cadena se embarca en un nuevo proyecto que se llamará ‘¿Hay alguien ahí?’ (foto). La serie se enmarcará en el género de terror, y tratará sobre una familia que se muda a una casa en la que suceden cosas extrañas. El reparto lo forman Eduard Farelo, María Cotiello, Montse Mostaza, Guillermo Barrientos, Marina Salas y la actriz húngara Agnes Kiraly. El hijo mayor de la serie es quien protagonizó la miniserie de Antena 3 ‘El castigo’. Se espera que esta ficción llegue pronto a nuestras pantallas.

Otra ficción nacional que estrenarán es la adaptación de ‘El exitoso señor Pells’, un serial argentino de los creadores de ‘Lalola’, que narra la vida de un matrimonio de presentadores de televisión de éxito cuyas vidas privadas no son lo que parecen.

Además, pronto debería llegar a la parrilla de Cuatro la tercera temporada de ‘Cuestión de Sexo’. Para esta etapa se han anunciado nuevos fichajes como los de Alejandro Tous (Álvaro en ‘Yo soy Bea’), Adriá Collado (Fernando en ‘Aquí no hay quien viva’), Mariam Hernández (Jessi en ‘La tira’). ‘Cuestión de Sexo’ es una serie muy buena que merece la pena, esperemos que en esta etapa le acompañen mejor las audiencias, que fueron tan irregulares en la anterior.

Probablemente le ayudaría empezar un poco más tarde, como en la primera temporada que, emitiéndose tras ‘Gominolas’ obtenía mejor share. Yo apostaría por acompañar a la serie con ‘Samantha ¿Qué?’, una divertida sitcom de la que Cuatro tiene los derechos. La serie se estrenó la pasada temporada y Cuatro se hizo con ella, pero no se decide a emitirla. Quizás porque con episodios de media hora no se puede llenar una noche, y no tiene suficientes capítulos como para emitirla a diario. Por eso, emitir un episodio de Samantha y otro de Cuestión sería ideal.

Otra serie americana de la que tienen los derechos es ‘Último aviso’ (Burn Notice) y tampoco se sabe cuándo llegará. Además tienen los derechos de ‘Club contra el crimen’ (Woman’s Murder Club), ‘Viajero en el tiempo’ (Journeyman) y ‘Atrapado en el tiempo’ (Day Break), aunque estas tienen todas las papeletas para acabar en el late night.

En cuanto al entretenimiento, es más que inminente la llegada de ‘Saturday Night Live’, que se estrenará este jueves, día 5 en primetime, programa del que ya hos hemos hablado varias veces.

BILANCIO DELLA SERATA: ottimo riscontro per il debutto della nuova edizione del varietà di Canale 5 “Scherzi a parte” con il nuovo trio Teo Mammucari – Belen Rodriguez – Claudio Amendola; sono comunque in leggera crescita rispetto alla scorsa settimana gli ascolti della serie italiana di RaiUno “Il commissario Manara” con Guido Caprino e Roberta Giarrusso. Tra gli altri programmi in onda: bene “Annozero” con Michele Santoro; risultato minore del consueto per l’ennesima replica del film “Rambo” con Sylvester Stallone; in calo rispetto a due settimane fa la serie poliziesca “Medium” con Patricia Arquette in prima visione su RaiTre; male l’episodio serale della soap opera tedesca di Rete 4 “Tempesta d’amore”, traslocato al giovedì; infine, i tre episodi in replica della serie di La 7 “Crossing Jordan” con Jill Hennessy.

Day Break, Taye Diggs, ator e cantor experiente em televisão, a série conta a história de um policial é injustamente acusado de um crime, e que vive o mesmo dia repetidas vezes. A idéia não é totalmente inédita: o filme Groundhog Day (Feitiço do Tempo, em Portugal; Dia da Marmota, no Brasil), com Bill Murray, já explora o tema. O atrativo de Day Break é que a cada dia o protagonista vai descobrindo pistas para solucionar o mistério de quem o está acusando e o porquê.

A série foi criada com apenas 13 capítulos, na intenção de segurar a audiência enquanto a série Lost estava em recesso na época dos feriados de fim de ano. Devido à baixa audiência, a emissora acabou optando por retirar a série do ar após o sexto episódio[1]. Os fãs usaram a Internet como veículo de protesto[2], e após algumas semanas, a ABC passou a transmitir o resto da série pelo seu site, apenas para o território americano.

Los Angeles Detetive Brett Hopper está preso repetindo o mesmo dia, no qual ele está enquadrado pelo assassinato do procurador da República adjunto, Alberto Garza. Hopper tem de limpar o seu nome, mas que atingem pessoas próximas apanhados na teia de conspiração que colocarão suas vidas em perigo.
