It has received critical acclaim and has been touted by some as the “Mixtape of Year” and features the hit single “Day ‘n’ Nite” produced by Dot Da Genius. A new rising star in the UK by the name of VV Brown posted up a cover of her doing Kid Cudi’s monster “Day N Nite” alongside some randoms playing on things. I swear the dude on her left playing the guitar was Pixie Lott’s guitarist on The Saturday’s tour I was on over the summer? Anyway…

Cool isn’t the word, it’s very cool.

I actually like the whole album. Yes, i’m a sell-out. I like Kid Cudi as much as I wouldn’t like to admit it. ‘Day and Nite’ was hot when it first dropped. I mean it is sickening now but admit it. It was good when you first heard it. Damn Kid Cudi, why do you have to be so likeable.

He lives up to all of his hype. And can make music to be heard by the masses. Our newest pop hiphop extraordinaire: Give him his props where it is due. He’s living the dream… (If I had Kanye money: I’m sure I could find a few Kudis)

En av de flummigaste intervjuerna jag gjort tror jag. Har hört från andra som träffat dem att det tenderar att bli lite snöigt. 34 minuters material och det kändes tveksamt om jag ens kunde använda tio minuter.

Strunt samma, plockat ut det som känns intressant men det blir lite halvfånigt ibland. Vi pratade fram och tillbaka i säkert 20 minuter om hur de träffades. De drog alla möjliga historier men jag har klippt ihop det till en short-version

Jag har älskat Crookers remixar sedan säg 2005. Vi spelade alltid, alltid minst en Crookersremix i Electron. De producerar idag även egen musik, men jag föredrar definitivt deras mixar. Nya remixen av Miike Snows Animal är ju helt jävla fantastisk. (Lyssna på den längre ned) En fin pojke önskade den när jag spelade på Svanen förra veckan. Sen dansade han lyckligt och jag log som en nyfrälst.

Who are Crookers?
Italienska DJ’sen Bot & Phra. Blev välkända på electrobloggarna nån gång i mitten av 2000-talet då deras remixar ploppade upp överallt. Sen blev de kända för en större massa när deras remix på Kid cudis Day N’ nite blev stor.

Phra bor i en liten by på den italienska landsbygden, Bot inne i Milano. Jag frågar om de egentligen inte borde bo inne i Milano båda två eller kanske till och med flytta till en större stad för att kunna satsa ännu mer på musiken. Men de anser att på grund av internets framfart spelar det ingen roll vart man bor, vilket nog i och för sig är helt sant.

Det var genomgående lite svårt att greppa om de var seriösa eller inte. Vi pratade om vad de skulle göra om de inte jobbade med musik. Förslag på allt från fashion drugdelivery till pizzadelivery… Slutsatsen jag kunde dra var nog främst att det är bäst om de får syssla med musik. Det gör de ändå väldigt bra.

C’est l’histoire d’un jeune homme qui ne croyait pas seulement en lui même, mais aussi en ses rêves. C’est l’histoire de l’homme sur la Lune.

Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi naquit le 30 janvier 1984 à Cleveland, dans l’Ohio. Il passa son enfance dans le foyer familial et mena une existence paisible jusqu’à ce que son père ne se fasse emporter par le cancer l’année de ses onze ans. Un traumatisme dont le gamin ne se remettra jamais vraiment. En vérité, ce décès provoqua chez lui un déclic qui modifia définitivement sa perception de l’humanité et de la musique. A vingt ans, Scott Mescudi quitta Cleveland pour Brooklyn. Déterminé à changer d’horizon, le jeunot se lança pour de bon dans le Hip Hop. Quatre années passèrent. Le gosse grandit, mûrit et se révéla. Le 17 juillet 2008, il rendit sa première copie : une mixtape sobrement intitulée A Kid Named Cudi. Alors que Scott Mescudi devenait Kid Cudi, “Day N Nite” déboula dans les charts. Le single connu un succès immédiat, les critiques l’encensèrent, le môme prit de l’importance. Très vite, il se démarqua des autres rappeurs en créant son propre univers. Bientôt, son style hipster et sa musique à part n’appartinrent plus qu’à lui. Man On The Moon survint alors, un jour se termina et un autre débuta…

C’est l’histoire d’un jeune homme partagé entre la Lune, les étoiles et la Terre. Une nuit, perdu dans ses pensées, Kid Cudi a fait un rêve, se laissant totalement emporter par son imagination. Man On The Moon : The End Of Day est le récit de cette expérience, l’histoire d’un homme rêveur attiré par le ciel, les nuages et l’obscurité du soir. On dit souvent que la nuit porte conseil, et c’est marrant car cet opus prend une tournure vraiment différente à partir du crépuscule. Quand le stress de la journée retombe et que les lampadaires des rues s’éteignent, l’homme de la Lune, lui, s’éveille. Kid Cudi est ce petit gars de 25 ans, ce marchand de sable mystérieux partagé entre ses rêves et ses cauchemars. Man On The Moon : The End Of Day est son premier album et il se pourrait bien qu’on en entende parler pendant très longtemps…

A proprement parler, ce disque est un ovni ! C’est simple, pour moi c’est l’Album représentatif du « nouveau Hip Hop ». En d’autres termes, l’œuvre de Kid Cudi marque le passage de témoin entre deux courants artistiques parfaitement distincts. Durant les trois dernières années où le Hip Hop n’a eu de cesse de se chercher une nouvelle évolution, je ne retiendrais qu’un seul projet : celui-ci. Selon moi, Kid Cudi est parvenu au résultat que des dizaines d’autres rappeurs essayent d’atteindre depuis trois ans. Depuis l’apparition du rap à la fin des années 80, au moins cinq mouvances artistiques se sont succédées. Celle qui tente de pointer son nez depuis quelques temps puise sa source dans l’électro et la pop music, et fait suite au mouvement soulful engendré par l’arrivée de Kanye West dans le game en 2004. Avant Kid Cudi, de nombreux artistes ont tenté d’amener cette évolution au Hip Hop mais se sont souvent cassés les dents. On pense notamment à T-Pain, Lil Wayne, Common (avec Universal Mind Control) et l’exemple le plus parlant : Kanye West. Avec du recul 808 & Heartbreak était un Man On The Moon raté. Certes, il possédait un vrai univers mais comparé à cette œuvre, il n’était qu’une esquisse de réussite. En quelques sortes – comme Jay-Z avec Kanye West – il y a eu passation de pouvoir entre le maître Kanye et l’élève Cudi.

Un classique se distingue dès la première écoute, quand il se passe quelque chose d’inhabituel dans les premières minutes. Et c’est précisément ce que m’a fait ce Man On The Moon : The End Of Day. Personne ne pourra nier qu’il tranche net avec le conformisme du rap de tous les jours. C’est d’ailleurs en cela que l’album déstabilise au début. Dès l’introduction (« In My Dreams »), un univers se crée. Kid Cudi plante le décor et ouvre les portes de son cosmos, suppléé par un discours introductif de Common. C’est le début de l’Acte 1.
Sur une production très planante d’Emile, son producteur maison, « Soundtrack 2 My Life » revient ensuite sur les vingt-cinq premières années du gamin. Un texte personnel qui annonce d’ores et déjà le message du disque.
Au commencement de l’Acte 2 – intitulé Rise of the night terrors – arrive le premier ‘cauchemar’. Les limites de l’expérimentation sont déjà repoussées. « Solo Dolo » est le morceau le plus lent de l’album, mais peut être aussi le plus poignant. Dans le petit monde de l’artiste, le couché du soleil a laissé place à une nuit noire. Fort heureusement, les mauvais rêves ne durent qu’un temps. « Heart Of A Lion » et « My World » (feat. Billy Craven) viennent ensuite aiguayer et conclure ce deuxième acte. Musicalement, on atteint des sommets. Kid Cudi, accompagné de ses producteurs fétiches (Emile, Free School, Plain Pat), nous emmène dans une dimension jusqu’alors jamais expérimentée par des artistes Hip Hop. On découvre, on plane, on voyage…

 ‘Taking a trip’ est l’intitulé du troisième acte, quasiment bâti sur le même schéma que le précédent. « Day N Nite » – second ‘cauchemar’ du disque – ralenti de nouveau le rythme de croisière avant que Kanye West ne le fasse repartir sur l’excellent « Sky Might Fall ». Les premiers signes du jour, quant à eux,  arrivent sur « Enter Galactic (Love Connection part.1) ». Par opposition, l’Acte 4 se distingue par des rythmiques nettement plus rapides, dues notamment à l’influence électro dans la production. Cette partie est aussi celle qui comporte le plus de morceaux (4 au total contre 2 ou 3 pour les autres actes). Les ‘cauchemars’ se font de moins en moins sombres, la musique s’harmonise et s’éclaircie petit à petit. En plage 11, « Cudi Zone » et ses violons virevoltants nous plongent dans la sphère cosmique de l’homme de la Lune tandis que sur « Make Her Say » (feat. Kanye West & Common), ce dernier opère un retour à des sonorités plus Hip Hop. « Pursuit Of Happiness » est la dernière grande envolée symphonique de l’album, l’introduction idéale pour le cinquième et dernier acte.

Act 5 : A new beginning

Un jour nouveau se lève alors. Avec « Hyyerra » d’abord, tout en douceur et volupté telle une rosée matinale. Puis avec « Up Up & Away » ensuite, énergique et vivifiant comme une brise printanière. En cette fin d’album, les sonorités lunaires et ténébreuses du début ont laissé place à un son nettement plus jovial, celui là même qui annonce l’arrivée d’un « nouveau commencement ».

Man On The Moon : The End Of Day est l’histoire d’un jeune homme qui, à force de regarder briller les étoiles, a fini par exaucer son vœu le plus cher : marquer un jour l’industrie du disque de son empreinte. Avec le talent, l’inspiration et la créativité, ce petit gars de 25 ans est parvenu à imposer sa propre vision de la musique. Son « Day N Nite » – pourtant très intimiste -, a fait danser des millions d’individus aux quatre coins du globe, apportant la preuve qu’une nouvelle ère est en marche. Je crois qu’on peut affirmer dès aujourd’hui que ce disque a toutes les cartes en main pour devenir le classique Hip Hop de demain. Nous avons eu l’avant Kid Cudi et dorénavant nous aurons l’après. Et entre les deux, il y a cette œuvre, d’ores et déjà assurée de marquer l’histoire de la musique urbaine.

There is something about him that keeps my attention.  I’m a person that appreciates FM radio for what it is–driving music.  Pop music/main stream music has never been they type of music to kill brain cells or test my intelligence.  It is music for enjoyment.  And then there the auto tune musicians that make me want to vomit.  Full disclosure— I don’t get the hype with T Pain and Lil Wayne.  I will also admit that I haven’t taken the time to really listen.  I get annoyed too quickly.

So I am a little surprised with my intrigue in Kid Cudi.  I think I really got into him when he was on the Poke Her Face remix with Kanye and Common.  Suddenly he wasn’t just another KIIS FM artist that was on the air every 3.2 minutes.  Thank the heavens.  “Day N Nite” was getting old quick and Kid Cudi was going down in my ranking.  But my attention was sparked once again.

Why am I rambling on and on?  Because I really like his new album, Man on the Moon: The End of Day.  It has a nice groove to it.  Usually I like faster paced rap music but the slower tracks are just as good on this album.  However, there is some tracks that feel like wasted space..just push the skip button on those.  You’ll know them when they hit.

And can I make a side note to this?  If you are a Pitchfork or die person, try to look beyond that.  This album is better than 4.1.  I am trying to stop myself from ranting but here it goes—Pitchfork’s reviews are opinion based.  So use them as guides but don;t worship them like a Bible.  Use your own senses.  Make your own opinions.  Read the reviews to learn about someones opinion.  And if you want more legit information that isn’t too judgmental, go to http://allmusic.com.  There you’ll get simple, useful information.  Don’t get me wrong…I like Pitchfork.  I’m just tired of going back and forth with people about music choices that they base solely on a website.

Cleveland’s own Kid Cudi has been creating buzz ever since the release of his debut mixtape A Kid Named Cudi.  His raw talent caught the attention of Kanye West, which lead to the signing of GOOD Music.  The new contender brought a new flare to hip-hop game, with the combination of  hip-hop and alternative rock acoustics sounds during  his first single “Day N Nite”, the midwest native marked his stamp in the industry as a trendsetter and innovator. His great musical ability landed ”Day N Nite” on the top ten of the  Billboard Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs chart. 

Cudi’s next single off his debut album Man on the Moon: The End of Day, ”Make Her Say” featured pop star Lady Gaga was one of hottest songs of the summer. R&B and Hip-Hop stations throughout the nation kept the single in heavy rotation. 

What makes Kid Cudi so different? His ability to combine various genres of music and make it appeal to the hip-hop demographic. The combination of alternative rock, hip-hop and electro pop has helped Cudi stand out compared to the rest of his counterparts. Even hip-hop mogul, Jay-Z noticed Cudi’s talent and had him featured on his Blueprint 3 album on the song “Already Home.”

Throughout his album, Cudi made sure his fans would get a taste of reality.  “People like records they can relate to, even if you can’t relate to something I speak about, you’ll at least understand my mind, I won’t lose anyone. Even if they haven’t walked in my shoes, they’ll feel me for me.”

As the newbie to the game, he has definitely left his mark and will have fans waiting for more.

Tudo bem que o Kanye West pagou o vale da vida dele no último VMA, ao se intrometer no discurso da Taylor Swift para dizer que o clipe da Beyoncé era melhor que o dela. Mas o talento dele é inegável e nessa parceiria com Kid Cudi e Common isto fica, mais uma vez, evidenciado. Kid Cudi, que se destacou com o single “Day ‘n’ Nite”, sendo outro rapper da mais nova geração, que vem pedindo passagem. Common é um rapper diferenciado, já que suas letras geralmente versam sobre amor e espiritualidade, em vez de dinheiro, fama e mulheres vulgares. “Make Her Say”, cujo nome originário era “Poke Her Face”, é, definitivamente, a soma das qualidades desses 3 artistas em cima do vocal de Lady Gaga em “Poker Face”, o que foi autorizado pela cantora em função da admiração de Kanye West pelos seus talentos.
