Looking for something to do over Fall break?

GOSU has a LAN this weekend, and not only that, but it is not on a (home) Game Day! They got moved out of the Exhibit rooms (double booking by the union), and are now in the Sequoya room, 2nd Floor, room 280.

Games that were brought up for playing include:
Day of Defeat Source
Team Fortress 2
Left 4 Dead
Counter Strike Source (maybe)

This LAN will end by 6PM due to Fall Break and Union Hours
Check it out.

Also, as always, their forum is still closed due to bots. If you want in send an e-mail to:

I know I was suppose to get some pictures of the bike I’ve been working… But, I forgot haha. Oh well, I’ll try and get some before it’s finished for sure though.

The paint came out okay. There are some imperfections, but that is okay. The body of it is gloss white, while handler bars, front fork, pedal arms, and rear brake mounts are olive green. I think it looks really nice. The rims/spokes will be flat black. Gonna be SICK!@

I use to play Counter-Strike awhile ago, I was on a team and all that. I stopped playing as my team mates and I had to do other things in life. I receive a instant message from one of my old team mates saying he is has a lot of free time and he and one other guy been playing a lot. We talked for a few about it.

Well, me being on a Mac didn’t really do me any good. I did have Boot Camp XP on it and did play Day of Defeat: Source and Team Fortress 2 occasionally. Now.. I dug out my old desktop PC and got it primed and ready to play CS. It is kinda odd seeing a Mac and my old LCD monitor side by side. Should be fun though.

Day of Defeat: Source is one of the lesser known titles from Valve. Like Counter-Strike it originate

Day of Defeat: Source is one of the lesser known titles from Valve. Like Counter-Strike it originated as a mod for Half-Life 1 where it garnered a strong user-base. After beta 3, however, Valve decided to bring the mod team on board and release Day of Defeat as a stand-alone game. They later brought it to the source engine. This is the version I just obtained and have been played over the past few hours.

Day of Defeat’s gameplay is rather unique. It reminds me a lot of Team Fortress 2’s gameplay in that most (or all) maps are control points. This isn’t unique or anything but, if you can understand what I’m saying, it has a similar vibe to Team Fortress 2’s take on control points. The other game mode I haven’t had a chance to play yet. I don’t know much about it, but it has one team strategically planting bombs throughout the map to blow up key points. Since I don’t know much about it yet, however, I won’t walk about it.

As the title of this blog post states, this is a first impression of Day of Defeat: Source. So what are my first impressions? Well, in short, DoD:S is a game for more mature gamers. Something you go to once you’ve “grown up” from Counter-Strike: Source. Not many kids seem to play the game and no one really mic spams. It’s something I’m not used to from Valve games.

(click for a larger version)

Choosing what weapon you use is similar to a class system. You have your close-ranged combat specialists, your long-ranged specialists and support unites. Your close-ranged units wielding machine guns. Once is less powerful but more accurate, the other is more powerful but less accurate. You have two sniper classes. Once has a scope, the other doesn’t. For obvious reasons the scope-less rifle does more damage. And then you have your heavy support classes. One class is a mounted machine-gun class. This class can tear through anything, but has a limited firing angle and can’t really run around firing their gun (the kickback is too much, plus it’ll drain your stamina instantly). The other class deals with rocket launching. Overall the classes are extremely balanced. I like this.

As mentioned there is a stamina system. This is fairly basic. You can run until your stamina “runs” out. You are also given the ability to lie on your stomach in order to conceal yourself better (or mount your mounted machine-gun).

The gameplay is extremely fast and slightly unforgiving. Even for a seasoned player like myself I was having trouble adapting to the pace of the game. Though no one’s great right away. I suspect that given a few weeks I’ll be doing well enough to not find the game extremely hard or extremely easy.

(click for a larger version)

Now let’s talk about the aesthetics of the game. The period in time has really been overly done. We’ve seen a lot of games come and go based in World War II. All of them generally leave a taste of “Meh” in our mouths. But how does Day of Defeat: Source compare? In short, I think DoD:S is the best WWII game out there in terms of getting you into the atmosphere of the period. Commands are spoken in accents proper for the time. Depending on what team you join you may be speaking German as well (which is a very nice touch!). Graphically the game is pretty much the epitome of Source games. Until now I thought Left 4 Dead was the best looking Source game. I was wrong. Despite being on an inferior version of the Source engine (the Orange Box), Day of Defeat: Source looks absolutely stunning. It really draws you into the time period. If for anything alone I’d play DoD:S for the scenery.

If you haven’t played Day of Defeat: Source yet, find a friend who can give you a guest account to try it. You will not regret it!

Online gaming can make you a less self-centered douche! Since Vinny and I began this little ‘p

Online gaming can make you a less self-centered douche!

Since Vinny and I began this little ‘project’, all of my posts have dealt with my observations and feelings on music – i.e. what I like, what I don’t; where I think popular music is going, and so on. That’s all well and good, but a comment on my last post (Paul Picks Up The Pieces) reminded me that I’ve got plenty more to say about our multifaceted 21st century culture. As such, I will stick with something I know – something cozy and close to my heart: the endless killing fields of multiplayer online gaming.

Some of my earliest and happiest memories are of squeezing the trigger on a plastic light gun, vainly attempting to kill ducks flying across the small screen in my bedroom. My hand/eye coordination in those days was pretty atrocious, so when I actually took one of the quacking bastards out it was cause for celebration. For the time, it was a blast, but the limitation was how solitary my joy was.

The problem: single player games rewarded you with an ending and games with a 2-4 person multiplayer mode usually had you competing against the other players for a high score. Plus, it didn’t extend farther than one room and one television screen. Mario and Luigi could take turns doing ’shrooms and making passes at the princess, or if you were cool enough to have friends, you could get a 4-player game of Goldeneye going in your living room. You’d play a few rounds, make fun of the dorky kid who constantly blew himself up with the rocket launcher, then have to stop playing because Mom asked you to explain why Jimmy was in the corner crying. (Who the hell invited him anyway?) When it was game over, you compared scores, and that was it.

Now, a couple decades later, games have skyrocketed in terms of content and complexity, but there’s still one ultimate goal that developers strive to give the player: the feeling of validation one gets after a job well done. That can be accompanied by the gnawing pain of defeat when one’s performance wasn’t up to par – but then, what would games teach us if we always won?

The big difference in 21st century gaming is that a game’s “ending” or getting the best score are no longer the primary points of validation. They’re still part of it, but the most important focus of modern gaming is that feeling you get after capturing the last flag with your squad of 12 through the use of combined arms and superior teamwork. Games have always been goal oriented, but now instead of the Doom one-man-army approach, there’s the Day Of Defeat U.S. Army approach. Gaming is no longer just an escape. If you play from the right perspective, it can be an exercise in humanity.

For simplicity’s sake (and because I have the most experience with them), I’ll only discuss online FPS-type (First Person Shooter) games. To be clear, I will say that many single-player shooters should absolutely be praised for their ability to tell stories, create suspense, and just be fun, but replaying the same campaign over and over will never be as fun as playing on a server full of human players with human advantages and human flaws.

For instance, Half-Life 2 was an excellent piece of gaming and storytelling. HL2: Deathmatch is the multiplayer component of the game, and while it has the expected fragfest-type game play, none of them hold a candle to Counter-Strike’s objective based play, or Day Of Defeat’s territorial tug of war.

I suppose a counter argument might be that circle-strafing a few newbs and racking up kills is a fun way to blow off some steam, but I can’t see how that feeling could last for very long. It’s just point-click, point-click, and repeat. Is it therapeutic? Maybe. But is it mentally satisfying? No.

Where is the tactical depth? Where is the communication? Where’s the suspense of trying to desperately defend the last flag and turn the game around? Racking up kills just doesn’t hold up against a game where relying on your teammates is the path to victory (though playing with a good team and losing anyway is rewarding in a certain way, too.)

I see it every time I log onto a DoD server: one person is the machine gunner, suppressing the enemy team, another is a rifleman picking off targets from long-range, while a third is assaulting a position and capping a flag. Now and then there’s the guy who runs off by himself, trying to be a hero, but his inability to be a team player puts everyone but the enemy at a disadvantage.

Okay, so maybe you’re still wondering what the hell I’m getting at. Yes, I prefer online FPS games where cooperation is paramount to success. But, there is actually an underlying social/cultural importance. (What? Games are culturally relevant?!)

Co-op online gaming is challenging a generation of people to work with players they don’t know and wouldn’t necessarily associate with in pursuit of a common goal. Sure, the goal may be artificial, but the underlying lesson is that “pwning” (while sometimes fun) is much less important than having the ability to effectively think, communicate and work with other people.

So, next time you see a teammate shooting at Nazi’s, be a friend – give him some covering fire.

-Alex

II Guerra Mundial + Malucos = DOD!

Já houve um tempo em que eu realmente era um fanático por jogos de computador. Viciado. Aficcionado.

Rating: 8 Out of 10

Day of Defeat: Source is definitely better than the original. The game has great graphics and audio along with nice multiplayer action. It also has great open maps for good action, and tons of independence for each class. However, there is some odd balancing issues between the kits. Overall, this is a fun game to play and it is worth the price.

Pros:

+ Surprisingly fast-paced

+ Tangible interdependence between classes

+ Gorgeous visuals

+ Well-designed and open maps create flow

Cons:

- Some odd balancing issues between kits

Rating: 8 Out of 10

Day of Defeat is a cool multiplayer WW2 game that brings some new things and mixes it with some old things too. This game has awesome gameplay and good graphics for it’s time. However, the game is a little buggy and a few weapons do need a few tweaks. Overall though, this is an alright game to play.

If you’re reading this blog, you’re most probably a friend that I’ve bugged enough

If you’re reading this blog, you’re most probably a friend that I’ve bugged enough about reading my blog. Most of you already know about my “secret” game project, The Diary of a Survivor, which I’ve been planning since this February.

I finally started working on an arena-like zombie survival engine a few days ago and have put some finalizing touches to it, so it’s now open for public betatesting. It has three weapons to choose from (Glock 18c, MP5 and RPG) right now with unlimited ammo, and eight randomly chosen spots for zombies to spawn from. You also randomly taunt the zombies when you get kills. The shooting engine is pretty clumsy, but the next release will include mouse-aiming and reloading system so it won’t be too easy.

So if anyone’s interested, I’m looking for betatesters. Just hit me with an comment (include your e-mail) and I’ll get in touch with you.

Keep in mind that, if you apply for the test, you shouldn’t wait for a good game. It’s merely the core gameplay engine. It’s graphically very poor and the level design is zero. This should be obvious for anyone whose been in touch with game-making… Graphics and level design only come when you’ve got the engine up and running.

Oh yeah, I also posted a video on YouTube, showing the Lightspeed Rocket Bug in Day of Defeat: Source in action. Check it out!

That’s all.

So last night I finally sat down to play some games on my newly resurrected PC, I tinkered with WoW to see what Frame rates I was getting – As high as 60 in places but a steady 40 was quite a refreshing change up from like 5. I also played about an hour and a half of TF2 with the WS@~ guys, we played on a server of a friend of mine but downgraded because Mark couldn’t handle the 32 man games

Amgs! Tank!

I wandered off for a while to play some DoD:S in between friends having dinner and was pretty disappointed. See I have found memories of the original Day of Defeat game, it was the first real attempt at a World War 2 Half Life mod and tackled it all very well. The true spirit was captured in the decimated shells of cities and grandiose athems both of which were produced to extremely high standards, the maps especially. It had a few interesting features as well from a game play perspective:

Several different Objective based modes

Whether you were struggling over and important control point or trying to take out armour convoys, it felt like a true WW2 game where some main stream titles do not.

“Realistic” Weapons

Using it in the loosest possible way the weapons in the original DoD felt more … Genuine. MG42s had recoil which reflected the fact you were effectively holding the leg of chuck norris, Kar98s (and extensions therein) were incredibly powerful bolt action rifles – trading brute force and accuracy for slow firing speed. The list goes on really.

Mounting Weapons

The Machine Gunners could mount their weapons to allow for vastly more accurate firing. I obviously wasn’t in WW2, but if you’re pinned down by an MG42 – This is how it should be. You should be dead or hiding. Absolutely awesome …

The British were in it:

This is a really bizarre thing to cut out … But in original DoD they brought a major patch in which included new maps, the British and a whole other range of weaponry for them … And it fucking rocked. I absolutely adored the British rifle … Which I shamefully can’t name.

Para-Mode

It was only in the game for a short while but a few maps had a so called “Para” mode which played similar to CS in the respect that you didn’t respawn. It was removed later on … But some maps won’t be the same with respawns.

Maps

Ah yes … I remember when they put maps in, that was a fantastic patch! You could throw icons and stuff onto it to highlight where enemies were – Truly a brilliant idea.

–

Anyway … I’m dragging this on way too much. My point is that while playing DoD:S I felt like I was playing a second rate mod … Not one professionally produced by Valve’s now in-house team.

The maps, if anything, have less detail on them now and the controls feel dusty and broken. I’m disappointed that it’s only the Americans and the Nazis (a definite step back) and also that so few maps are included in an apparently professional release.

It’s just not the same calibur as Team Fortress 2 … And I have to wonder why. Valve could have made this the definitive World War 2 online game … Instead it’s just a mod. A sub par mod at that.

Regards,

I used to enjoy the days that I was able to get on my microphone, scream at some preteen that hasn’t had his balls drop yet and laugh as I work with my buddies to demolish the opposition. When I was in high school I met a lot of people through online video games: some of my best friends even today played Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat with me. We were staying up late at night, practicing our strategies and playing in scrimmages. At our prime we were even in the top twenty in the United States for Day of Defeat. Man, those were the days.

Like everyone else we all had to grow up. Some of us moved on to a bigger and better world, we were cleaning up on the Battlegrounds in World of Warcraft, fighting for our country overseas and, yes, even going to college. It had been two years since I had even logged onto my Steam account. I was working two jobs at the time and a full-time student (which, by the way, if you are able to get a gig at a liquor store go ahead and do it – best time of my life). When I moved into my college dormitory I hadn’t yet purchased my laptop and I brought my old gaming rig with me.

Unfortunately due to the cost of community college I was unable to keep the pig greased up, oily and running without a squeak. Sure, she still had the flair from the LAN events that we had attended, her war scars from being dropped before she had her travel harness and the various tattoos on her body showing off the logos of her internals.

So back to the fun: I had not logged into my Steam account for over two years, and at the time this new version of Steam was a whole new beast. It actually did not crash my system! Upon attempting to login, changing my password and finally getting in I was able to find that for some reason I had been banned from online play. Whoa there, what the fuck was going on?

You see, Valve has this little thing called an Anti-Cheat piece of shit that back in the day rarely worked the way it was suppose to (although, I hear the new version is actually better). You would get banned for running the wrong sound card driver, or worse, running a copy of Ventrilo in the background. I did one worse: I was a Half-Life 2 modification developer before the SDK even came out and I would often be debugging my modification. I am convinced that this is how I got tagged for “cheating.”

Anyway, I figured it would be easy to get this resolved considering I have not logged on to my account for nearly two years, right? Valve immediately denied to revoke the ban, and furthermore, advised me to not add any additional software to this account. That really pissed me off.

In addition to “cheating” I had done it from the current IP address, yeah that’s right, the one that at the place that I had just moved into. Valve also refused to tell me exactly what I was banned for citing some bullshit about their EULA and how its proprietary information. Oh, and they didn’t want to cut me a check for the cost of the games, either (not that I thought they would).

To make a long story short, because let’s face it, you are probably reading this thinking that I am some douchebag that was on the other end using some hack and got what his deserved, even after filing a claim with the Better Business Bureau the issue remains unresolved. I have lost out on hundreds of dollars in software that I have purchased for what? Because some asshole decided that I was a cheater?

This is not the first time this has happened. There are reports all over the Internet about people’s accounts getting hijacked, Valve acknowledging it, and refusing to lift the ban. My good friend JR had the exact same thing happen to him. What has this done to us? We are refusing to buy any software off Steam – period. We are tired of these gaming companies making mistakes and refusing to fix them. I am all for banning the cheaters, but when you can’t even fucking tell me why I was banned there is something wrong.

I suggest that you all do the same thing. You need to hit these corporate assholes where it hurts – their wallets. Because, I for one, am tired of purchasing a heaping pile of shit only to find that they attempt to candy coat it with a little spray and eventually take the shit away from you because you “cheated.”

Someone needs to bring a class action lawsuit against these pieces of shit before we end up buying all of our games through them. That’s what its looking like more and more each day, and I for one will stick with console games before I let Gabe Newell fuck me in the asshole without lube. Sorry buddy, I work for my money and I don’t rip off other people for it.

Hi there! I’m Zelkina, I’m a 22 yr old girl. Games I play included Day of Defeat, Team fortress 2, Guild Wars, Travian, Call of Duty 4, Company of Heroes, BF2142 to name a few. I’m also in to rock/metal music and like going to concerts and such. I also write fan fiction and my own stories, am a big Harry Potter fan so much of my fanfiction is based on that. This is my first attempt at a reveiw, so i hope you enjoy!

Zel.

After much complaining and utterances of “Why haven’t you got it yet?” from my clan mates, I purchased Day of Defeat: Source two weekends ago. Bargain price of £5, with all the conversion charges and what have you thrown in. That, and we had been playing from about 12 noon that day as they were doing a free weekend of it.

For those who don’t know the game, and may have been living on a remote island just north of the Antarctic, let me enlighten you. Day of Defeat (or DoD) is a WWII multiplayer game. The game re-creates battles of WWII in both fictional and non fictional settings. You have a choice to step in to the shoes of either the U.S. Army, or the Wehrmacht. You then either have a choice of capturing control points, usually shown with a flag on, or mercilessly hunting down the enemy and slaughtering every last one of them. I’d suggest you stick with the games main theme, and use the team work idea…some people don’t take too kindly to people who don’t participate in team action.

Game play is quite engaging, as I found out yesterday. Meaning only to play a round or two, I ended up playing for three hours. When opting for the U.S. Army, I usually adopt the Support class. I used to play as Assault, but found controlling the Thompson a little difficult. I have a somewhat “itchy trigger finger” which made playing with this gun a little awkward for me. My aiming also goes to hell in a hand basket as well. It’s rather like being told to aim at the closest person to you with a rotten egg, and even though that person is seemingly no less than a metre or so away from you, you still throw the egg at a wall in the opposite direction. But that’s just me.(I hope)

As Support, I find I’m at least not sitting on the bottom of the scoreboard, but seeing the rest of your clan at the top of the bored, then six spaces below you can see your name, is a little disheartening, but that’s just me as a player. I like using the Browning Automatic Rifle a lot more than the Thompson. I can aim better, I can actually shoot the person in front of me trying to stab my face or spade me. I enjoy playing as this class. I don’t usually go for any of the other classes, I tend to stick with what I know. And I know I can get a lot of kills with my little BAR.

As for playing Wehrmacht, I tend just to play Assault. The MP40 is easier to control for me than the Browning, and of course, who wouldn’t pass up the opportunity to walk behind a helpless Sniper and batter them to death with a spade? The fact you now get achievements for it makes it all the more worthwhile.

Of course with every game, there are good bits, and there are bad bits. One thing I find particularly annoying is the mod that makes you drop your gun if you are shot in the arm. You then get a little message from the game in the corner with the chatter from the room “You have been shot in the arm-pick up your gun” OK, so people want to play it as it really was, and I guess yes, if I was actually shot in the arm, I probably would drop my gun if I was holding it. But having some hyper-active 13 yr old kid shoot you in the arm, so that you automaticly pull out your knife, (meanwhile you’re still clicking the mouse button wondering why your gun isn’t going off, because this all happens in the blink of an eye) and while you’re trying to figure out where the hell your gun went they stab you, which to me warrants the little brat’s head snapped off and shoved up his behind in something akin to Hancock (if you’ve seen it, you’ll know). It’s a really, really annoying game play feature, but I guess people will say to shut up and be thank full it’s not a part of the actual game.

A second thing I find annoying is idiots who enter the sever, and start team killing everyone. I went in a server last night, and some pillock (I can think of a much better word but wont use it) was lying with his machine gun, facing the sandbags in the map…….cant remember the name but it’s the one where you have to stop the other team blowing your things up. That’s where his team spawned, and the moment we came out, he started emptying his machine gun in to us! I mean, what’s the point? You’re getting yourself banned from servers where you’ll probably want to play in some day, and incurring the wrath of everyone playing at that moment in time. These people probably get kicks from watching old ladies fall over in the street or something.

And of course, no sever is complete without the irritating whining of someone who uses the word “noob” every ten seconds and whining about campers. Seriously. Shut the hell up. You joined the sever to play, so play and stop the whining. Who gives a damn if people are camping? DoD_Avalanche is a snipers dream. Of course there are going to be campers, it’s part of any fps. As long as there’s a class that lets you snipe while hidden in bushes/buildings/behind crates/on walls etc., there’s going to be campers. That’s life.

Graphicly, the game has stood the test of time. It’s never going to be as wonderfully polished and look as fantastic as the newest of the new games, lets all agree on that. But the soldiers don’t look like something from a Spectrum or a Commodore 64. You can tell who they are, what gun they have. Hell, it’s even got bullet spray and dust as the bullets hit the ground around you. Surely, for a massive game that thousands play every day, graphics that meet standards and aren’t trying to out-do themselves in a wave of pixilated glory are ok?

Over all, I enjoy Day of Defeat: Source. I may be rubbish at it, but it keeps me coming back for more. If you’re the kind of person who hates any form of even remotely camping, doesn’t know what team work is, team kills regularly and finishes every sentence with “Noob, ur such a noob” don’t bother with this game. You’ll only disappoint yourself and annoy everyone else. Although you may find a perverse pleasure in the sound of the Sniper’s bullet pinging through your helmet and sending you off to the Reaper.

I give it 9/10….if it wasn’t for the gun mod and the annoying whining it’d be 10/10

Wehrmacht. You then either have a choice of capturing control points, usually shown with a flag on, or mercilessly hunting down the enemy and slaughtering every last one of them.

I give it 9/10

Go Buy: Day of Defeat Source – $5

As in, go buy it right now. It is currently on sale through your friendly steam client. Based on the very good HL1 mod, this HL2 stand-alone product just got the Achievement patch from valve.

Now, some of you may scoff at picking up this game:

-”My computer’s too crappy.”

-”I’m busy, so I don’t think I can get to it in time.”

-”I don’t know what it is, so I’m not interested.”

I’ll counter with:

It’s FIVE dollars; no tax, no shipping. For the price of a DLC plane skin, picture pack, or a couple songs you get an entire game. A game that is permanently associated with your steam account. Automatically patched; automatically installed when you want.

Plus, you get to shoot Nazis. Or Allies. You know, depending on the team you’re on.

So, boot up steam, and leave your steam login name in the comments. Link and instructions after the jump:

Here’s the page to the game:

http://steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=app&AppId=300&cc=US

But I wouldn’t bother with that. You can easily buy it through the Steam store of the official client. Just login in, go to the store, and then browse to the game.

The steam client can be found here as a little box link on the right side:

Commands And Installation – Comandos e Instalação

After you have successfully downloaded Project Mayhem Cheat, open it up with Winrar

1. Double click on the downloaded file.
2. Unzip (Ctrl + A, then drag and drop
into a folder).
3. Open (double-click) “Mayhem.exe” within the folder and click “monitor”.
4. You should now have the program open. You don’t need to do
anything else but start your preferred game, so enjoy cheating!

Once you are in-game, and you wish to change settings, you may need to use the following commands:

* delete opens the “console”
* home toggles the “hlss”
* insert opens the “menu”
As you can see, “del”(delete) is the command, and “console” is the effect. With this, you should know that:

* Command delete opens Project Mayhem console
* Command end toggles your multiplayer communication link(by toggle I mean you don’t need to hold it down to keep it on/off)
* Command home opens HLSS (Half-Life Sound Selector) for your microphone spamming needs
* Command insert opens/closes the menu, and saves the cvars you have changed

Treat the Project Mayhem console like the STEAM console,
except for the commands. You won’t be able to use your arrow keys to
highlight menu options in the menu, you will need to use your
mouse (mouse movements to highlight, left click to select, and right
click to go back).

1- Descompacte os arquivos (em qualquer pasta)
2- Rode o “Mayhem.exe” e clique em “monitor”
3- Rode o jogo escolhido

CBD – www.cbdod.com

TND – www.tndod.com.br

DBL – www.dodbrasileague.com.br/1.3
