Ehrlich!

my friend adrianne introduced me to the music of pokey lafarge last week, and to say that i’ve been obsessed is a bit of an understatement. i wanted to have his babies after hearing about 3 notes. his music is a blend of down-on-the-bayou bluegrass, blues, and roots music. and seriously, i can’t get enough. you might have to stage an intervention.

check him out on myspace. then download his session from daytrotter.

he is the musical savior i’ve been longing for.

last week’s lucero show in houston was a rollicking good time, full off boozy singalongs, dirty neck-beards and even a bar brawl. pretty standard fare for the tennessee quartet who’s new album, 1372 overton park, features more of ben nichols’ compelling dead-end characters and backhanded sense of romance. oh, and did i mention a horn section, both on the new album and intergrated into the old songs? the band are full-on born to run mode, letting the brass blow on their new daytrotter sessions performing overton park cuts as well as the classic “that much further west”.

Mom and Dad took me to Huckleberry’s Pizza to another Daytrotter show. This time we got to see Sondre Lerche, Lissie, and JBM.

JBM played a guitar and wore a flannel shirt and sang some songs. He has a nice voice and it made me sleepy.

Lissie is from Rock Island where my Grandma and the pizza and my Grandpa are from. She wears silly glasses and plays a guitar and sings songs about people. I didn’t sleep very much because the other people eating pizza were very happy to see her and clap their hands when she told them to. Mom took me to dance in the other big room where a man with a beard talked to me. Lissie sang a song about Rock Island and a man with pig iron who fooled him and then the song got really, really fast and Mom was very excited. Rock and roll!

Then all of Lissie’s brothers and sisters and best friends went home after they hugged her and told her how they like rock and roll and bought a t-shirt. And Mom and Dad moved us to a big table so we could see Sondre but everyone stood up. Dad told me that he was in a movie that I didn’t see with the silly man from The Office who wants to kiss the pretty lady from The English Patient. He was loud and very funny and borrowed JBM’s guitar but broke it. I liked it when all the girls in the room were singing with Sondre because they knew the song.

We were all very tired but it was a lot of fun. I can’t wait until I am old enough to dance on my own!

Daytrotter just posted a session of one of our favorite artists, Gary Jules. Daytrotter, as we know, included lots of free downloads for all of you fans alike.. so head on over after checking out his video of “Beautiful” below and a sweet acoustic version Gary Jules’ favorite incredible, “Mad World” Tears for Fears ala Danny Darko cover. We thought Brandi Carlile did a smash up job of this cover as well on her set here in Portland recently.

Also, of note, throughout the month of September Gary was touring with our another of YATM’s favorite artists, Joshua Radin.

The Antlers har recorded a downloadable session over at Daytrotter available here. I also noticed that Hospice has returned to Spotify after being removed for a month or so. It is available here. I can’t stop getting astounded over the marvelous lyrics in the songs from Hospice. Two of my favourite songs from the album are Kettering and Two (both are also on the Daytrotter session). I pasted the lyrics to these songs below.

Two

In the middle of the night I was sleeping sitting up,
when a doctor came to tell me, “Enough is enough.”

He brought me out into the hall (I could have sworn it was haunted),
and told me something that I didn’t know that I wanted to hear:
That there was nothing that I could do to save you,
the choir’s gonna sing, and this thing is gonna kill you.
Something in my throat made my next words shake,
and something in the wires made the lightbulbs break.
There was glass inside my feet and raining down from the ceiling,
it opened up the scars that had just finished healing.
It tore apart the canyon running down your femur,
(I thougth that it was beautiful, it made me a believer.)
And as it opened I could hear you howling from your room,
but I hid out in the hall until the hurricane blew.
When I reappered and tried to give you something for the pain,
you came to hating me again and just sang your refreain:

You had a new dream, it was more like a nightmare.
You were just a little kid, and they cut your hair,
then they stuck you in machines, you came so close to dying.
They should have listened, they thought that you were lying.
Daddy was an asshole, he fucked you up, built the gears in your head,
now he greases them up. And no one paid attention when you just stopped eating. “Eighty-seven pounds!” and this all bears repeating.

Tell me when you think that we became so unhappy,
wearing silver rings with nobody clapping.
When we moved here togehter we were so dissappointed,
sleeping out of tune with our dreams disjointed.
It killed me to see you getting always rejected,
but I didn’t mind the things you threw, the phones I deflected.
I didn’t mind you blaming me for your mistakes,
I just held you in the doorframe through all of the earthquakes.
But you packed up your clothes in that bag every night,
and I would try to grab your ankles (what a pitiful sight.)
But after over a year, I stopped trying to stop you from stomping out that door,
coming back like you always do. Well no one’s gonna fix it for us, no one can.
You say that, ‘No one’s gonna listen, and no one understands.’

So there’s no open doors and there’s no way to get through,
there’s no other witnesses, just us two.

There’s two people living in one small room,
from your two half-families tearing at you,
two ways to tell the story (no one worries),
two silver rings on our fingers in a hurry,
two people talking inside your brain,
two people believing that I’m the one to blame,
two different voices coming out of your mouth,
while I’m too cold to care and too sick to shout.

Kettering

I wish that I had known in
That first minute we met
The unpayable debt
That I owed you

‘Cause you’d been abused
By the bone that refused
You and you hired me
To make up for that

And walking in that room
When you had tubes in your arms
Those singing morphine alarms
Out of tune

They had you sleeping and eating and
And I didn’t believe them
When they called you a hurricane thunder cloud

When I was checking vitals
I suggested a smile
You didn’t talk for a while
You were freezing

You said you hated my tone
It made you feel so alone
So you told me I had to be leaving

But something kept me standing
By that hospital bed
I should have quit but instead
I took care of you

You made me sleep and uneven
And I didn’t believe them
When they told me that there
Was no saving you

About two weeks ago, I re-discovered a little website called Daytrotter. I’ve collected a selection of things from this lovely website over the last couple of years but hadn’t yet delved into it fully. However, upon doing so, I discovered a veritable treasure trove of musical goodness.

Death Cab for Cutie's artwork on Daytrotter.

For those who are totally unfamiliar with Daytrotter, it’s a music website which hosts sessions for up-and-coming bands and then lets you download these sessions free of charge (after registering – also free). The bands on there are pretty varied overall, from Death Cab For Cutie to Bon Iver to Carly Simon, and the site has a refreshing brand of journalism aswell, with short-ish descriptions of the sessions themselves attached to the tunes they have available for online listening & downloads.

Not only does Daytrotter offer a really cool and easy way of listening to bands you’ve never investigated before or perhaps even heard of at all, but it also throws up some lovely versions of songs you know by bands you love. For instance, the session by former Unknown but awesome subject The Tallest Man on Earth has him covering the Bob Dylan classic I Want You, which many of you will know from Blonde on Blonde. The artwork they provide – hand-drawn portraits of the artists in question – is also pretty sick and adds another layer of sweetness to this lovely website.

Anyway, this isn’t a long entry, and neither should it be. Daytrotter is a brilliant website which I cannot recommend highly enough. For starters, here are a few links to some of the sick sessions they’ve had in over the years. Hope you enjoy investigating it as much as I have of late.

Last July I was lucky enough to catch the last two minutes or so of The Antlers‘ Madfork 2.0 s

Last July I was lucky enough to catch the last two minutes or so of The Antlers‘ Madfork 2.0 set. I was also unlucky in only catching the last two minutes of their set. Shortly thereafter, I listened to everything they had posted on their site, and just wasn’t as impressed as I had been a few days before. Yesterday, October 30th, 2009, Daytrotter posted their session with The Antlers, so I gave it a listen. Hooray for Daytrotter, because they managed to capture much of the magic I was witness to last summer. Being reassured that The Antlers were as amazing as I remembered, I looked up tour dates and discovered the band was in town that very night. The good people at Tell All Your Friends PR responded to my last-minute request, and I had the pleasure of attending The Antlers’ opening set at the Independent in San Francisco, CA.

Though the Daytrotter set is superb, nothing compares to seeing The Antlers play live. Peter Silberman (vocals/guitar), Darby Cicci (keys), and Michael Lerner (percussion) play off each other to create ever-expanding landscapes, filling every available space with sound. Silberman stands to the side, his vocals mixed down in the wash of sound, giving the impression of drowning or speaking from beyond. Lerner’s precision tows Silberman along, and Cicci attacks his instruments as though they need to be powered by his touch.

The songs in The Antlers’ set range from catchy and misleadingly upbeat (“Two”) to hopelessly beautiful (“Atrophy”), commonly employing the struggle of triumph and hope against a nagging sense of despair and defeat. What The Antlers syphon out of the room emotionally in the course of a set may never be replaced, but we must do our best to stanch the flow with tourniquets and transfusions.

–

(PARTIAL?) SET LIST: Bear, Sylvia, Atrophy, Two, Wake

It’s my first rock and roll show! If any of you are worried Dad bought me a set of ear muffs to protect my hearing and a fake ID that says I was born in 1988.

Hacienda.
The good people at Daytrotter brought not one, not two, but three awesome rock and roll combos to Huckleberry’s Great Pizza: Hacienda, Suckers, and Corto Maltese. It was really loud, but I managed to sleep through just about everything. I liked that Corto Maltese did Television’s ‘See No Evil’ — Dad plays this song a lot. I liked it when the man from Suckers played his maraca and yelled. And I liked it when Hacienda told jokes about how they don’t know how to play their songs.

James sounds ever so briefly as if he might disintegrate into small weep, just one tear, but it doesn’t at all sound like a weakness, just pretty honesty, as if there’s really nowhere to hide and there’s no use in ignoring whatever it is that is burying its claws into him. It’s sitting and waiting for the soul to either straighten its back or to unravel into a glorious mess right in front of the eyes. – from daytrotter
