I was all set to drop HEROES when, just in the nick of time, this week’s episode turned out to

I was all set to drop HEROES when, just in the nick of time, this week’s episode turned out to be pretty good.

If HEROES was in the public consciousness at all, it was because this episode featured Hayden Panettiere’s Claire getting kissed by her roommate Gretchen (played by CALIFORNICATION’s Madeline Zima). So that happened — but in the context of the story, it was actually rather creepy, because Gretchen had been exhibiting stalkerish behavior, and her explanation was that she’s “crushing” on Claire. I’m going to keep an eye on this plotline and see where they take it.

The story that made this week’s episode memorable concerned Peter and Emma bonding when he absorbs her synesthesia power, enabling him to see sound as light. Ironically, this low-key plot contrivance actually made the show look more like a comic book than all the previous super-powered battles combined. The ability to see sounds aped the visual language of a comic book, where sound is represented by wavy vibration lines or onomatopoeia. HEROES showed Emma and Peter perceiving sound as a cloud of multicolored lights, and the two characters were able to connect on a deep (and quiet!) level. (Emma’s power reminds me of X-Men’s Dazzler, but she converts sound into light.) I definitely want to see where this relationship goes.

Meanwhile, Sylar was in Baltimore, getting the third degree from Ghostbusters‘ Winston Zeddemore — I mean, Ernie Hudson. Hudson played Warden Glynn on OZ, which was set in Baltimore. Sylar decided to kidnap his pretty therapist with the odd accent, just like Bruce Willis did in 12 Monkeys (which was also set in Baltimore). That led to the reveal that the Sullivan Brothers carnival can literally travel from place to place. Talk about a roadshow!

I am totally off my rocker for this amazing artwork by Corey Lewis for Strange Tales #3 from Marvel Comics! Many thanks to Robot 6 at Comic Book Resources for featuring this preview!

The X-Men as a band is a great concept and I am loving who Corey picked. Of course the amazing thing about this story is that it features Longshot searching for Dazzler! It’s exciting to see such a great talent taking one of my favorite eras of the X-Men and making it so contemporary and fresh! Let’s just say that this mohawk Storm has a very special place in my heart already!

For some reason, I missed JLoA #38 on Wednesday. I fixed that yesterday afternoon.

When your book is a team book, and your team’s leader is asking the questions, “Why are we here? why are we doing this?” and those questions are echoed by the readers, you have a serious problem. This is the first of Robinson’s run on the much maligned title. I beginning to think DC just needs to scrap this book and start fresh in a few months. Let the “Events” end; bring back the big seven, and take a page from Marvel: go back to the original volume’s numbering.

As much as I’d like to believe this volume is cursed by a stench left by Meltzer, it boils down to bad editorial. James Robinson has a long row to hoe if he’s going to make this title work again. I could go on, but Brian Cronin over at CBR states it all more concisely.

The real joy of this week’s extra visit to the comic shop was finding a new line of tables containing 2 for a dollar books. I’d be willing to bet that Jesse has at least 500 words on the joys of such bargain boxes, so I’ll just tell you about some of the gems I found.

Captain America: Truth 1-4 was a pleasant surprise. I’m missing the last two issues, but these first four issues were smart and nicely respectful to both American history (even the ugly bits) and Marvel 616 history. Plus, it never hurts to have some Kyle Baker art.

Dazzler #10 has given me a goal in my collecting. I want to pick up the issues of any title where a character becomes a herald of Galactus. Between this issue and the Marvel Comics Presents issue where Aunt May becomes Golden Oldie, I’m well on my way.

I also picked up a couple of unconnected issues of Atomic Robo. I want to like this book. It’s got a robot; it’s got Tesla; I just can’t commit to picking it up regularly. Hellboy does this schtick so much better.

I guess that’s it. Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Simon Trask finally makes his move in the latest issue of Uncanny X-Men, and the Dark X-Men hav

Simon Trask finally makes his move in the latest issue of Uncanny X-Men, and the Dark X-Men have to take care of it. All the people Trask “infected” have now turned into organic Sentinels with pretty lame character designs. Cyclops talks to Psylocke, Moonstar, Domino, and Mindee of the Stepford Cuckoos (real name Irma, great job Matt Fraction!) and gives them crucial, individual jobs. On Alcatraz, Wolverine and Hawkeye fight, and Emma Frost breaks them up. Then, the Dark X-Men fight off Trask’s Sentinels, and when they discover that the are essentially no longer human, things get messy. Cyclops talks with Pixie a bit, and he leads a team out to scout out Emma’s Dark X-Men. Dani arrives in Las Vegas to meet with a mysterious benefactor, whose casino says “Abandon hope, all ye who enter here.” Guess we’re getting a shout-out to Hela and Dani’s former Valkyrie status. The Dark X-Men finish off the Sentinels, and Cyclops tells his handpicked team, which includes Pixie, Karma, Iceman, Colossus, Dazzler, Armor, and Northstar, that they will have to fight the Dark X-Men as a team, since the Dark X-Men don’t fight as one. Meanwhile, X-Force plus Magik assembles, and the X-Club, led by Psylocke, go to some mysterious place underwater just off the coast.

I continue to support my statement that Utopia has revived the X-franchise. For the first time since he started writing this series, Matt Fraction seems capable of differentiating the voices of the various X-Men who aren’t Wolverine, Cyclops, Emma Frost, and Colossus. Additionally, he does a good job with the Dark X-Men and Norman Osborn, as well as a few of the Dark Avengers who are neglected by Brian Michael Bendis. I would still have to say that his work on this series is much weaker than his work on other books, and it’s sad that he can’t bring some of the sensibilities that he shows in Invincible Iron Man to the table here. Still, he had a great idea with this story, and it’s quite enjoyable. I may have some problems with the execution, as well as the underlying ideas, but it’s a testament to his skill as a writer that, even with all those reservations, I’m enjoying it. Terry Dodson’s work here isn’t the best of his career, but it’s still quite beautiful. I’m even beginning to see some variation in his faces for women. It’s not much, but it’s a start. It also makes me afraid of the day that Greg Land comes back to this series. On the whole, this is a fun and different arc for the X-Men that is good even though it could be much better.

For the first time in his run, Matt Fraction truly seems to have some good ideas for the new Da

For the first time in his run, Matt Fraction truly seems to have some good ideas for the new Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men: Utopia crossover. It’s stemming logically from the current situation of the X-Men in San Francisco and Norman Osborn’s rise to power in Dark Reign. Simon Trask and his Humanity Now! coalition march to San Francisco in order to fight for legislation to “humanely” restrict mutant reproductive rights. Beast, Northstar, Dazzler, Pixie, Hellion, and other mutants likewise exercise their own rights, and fighting breaks out. It gets so bad that the police can’t handle it, and Norman Osborn declares martial law on the San Francisco Bay Area. He sends in the Dark Avengers and calls up Emma Frost to lead a new team that will act as the leaders of mutantkind: the Dark X-Men. This team will include her, Mimic, Cloak and Dagger, Weapon Omega, Wolverine (Daken), and Mystique pretending to be Professor X. Emma also brings in Namor as an eighth member. They start doing their thing as government-sanctioned mutant police when Hellion decides to break a curfew, and Cyclops realizes that a confrontation is inevitable.

This is all quite interesting. Norman Osborn using the image of Professor Xavier to win legitimacy and public support. The Dark X-Men team. The “radical poles” of Cyclops and Simon Trask. It’s both highly political and steeped in current Marvel Universe affairs. And as many people have noted, Proposition X, the restrictions of mutant reproduction rights, is a lot like the now infamous and widely hated Proposition 8, which bans gay marriage. The metaphor of gay people as mutants is a time-honored one, but this new iteration of it is more modern and therefore feels fresher. Matt Fraction does some great work with the Dark Avengers, especially with Hawkeye, one of the characters who has been somewhat left behind by Brian Michael Bendis. I love the reference that Daken makes to Chez Panisse, and I myself have eaten there on more than one occasion. He’s right about how good it is.

Another thing is that, in this issue, Matt Fraction gets to really show what the characters are like rather than see them in his usual generic fashion. He gets Hellion’s disrespect for authority especially. Other characters, like Mercury and Surge, are still lost in his genericization treatment, but this issue is a step in the right direction. I’m also very curious as to where the Dark X-Men concept goes. I love Emma and Scott as a couple (even though Emma is more than a bit of a slut), so I don’t like the rupture. However, in practice, this is quite intriguing. Marc Silvestri is someone who I wish was the full-time artist on Uncanny X-Men. His work is 95% in the top tier of all of comic bookdom, and the other 5% is still better than almost everything else. It’s sharp, it’s clean, and it’s pretty. Fortunately, Greg Land will not be working on this arc. In fact, with the three artists lined up, poor Terry Dodson is actually the worst of them. His women often look a bit too much alike, even if they are absolutely beautiful. But you know that when Terry and Rachel Dodson are the worst in an art team that everything will be all right. This is one of the best stories I’ve read from the X-Men in a long time, and I can’t wait to see where it goes.

Plot: 9.0 Art: 9.3 Dialogue: 8.9 Overall: 9.1

Ryan Scribbles List:

1) Galactus

I want to know who decided that the “Eater of Worlds” was going to wear a giant pink and purple pants suit with a cut up skirt and a giant towering helmet. I guess nothing really scares people like a gaudy choice in fashion but if this guy came to eat my planet I wouldn’t exactly take him seriously.

2) Wonder Man

Poor, poor Wonder Man. He has never ever has a decent costume. His first costume was green and red and he looked like a walking Hallmark card for Christmas. He also had the red leather field jacket and sunglasses. First off, it looks like he stole that jacket from the ‘Thriller’ set and he ends up looking a little bit like a lesbian feminist in that get up. Then he became a purple bunch of energy with a red “W” in the middle, which is scarily his best costume.

3) Goliath

Way back in the day, when Hawkeye got fed up of being looked down on, he used Pym Particles to turn himself into Atlas. Yellow spit curl haircut and his costume was a halter top. It stopped right under his biceps and just showed off his body. It was like he was dancing in an eighties music video. It’s embarrassing.

4) The Wizard

The Wingless Wizard is a pitiful member of the Frightful Four. Now if his wannabe handlebar mustache wasn’t bad enough he has a light purple suit with a giant helmet on his head. It extends the length of his head by at least a whole other head.

5) Disco Dazzler

She’s the Bee Gee of the super hero world. Marvel was trying to capitalize on the disco craze in the seventies and this little beauty was the result of that. Flare bottom pants, roller skates, and an ugly glitter mask. It was like they just wanted to cement her a s a lame super hero.

6) The Shocker

Everything Spider-Man has ever said about Shockers costume is true. It’s a mattress. A yellow and red Serta approved mattress. Of course, the red vest that turns into underwear helps the cause and depending on the artist sometimes it looks more like fishnets…if that’s any better.

7) Nuklon

Who ever thought super heroes with mohawks was cool? Normal people with mohawks aren’t even cool. While Nuklons costume isn’t exactly a class act it’s the mohawk that really pushes it over the top.

8 ) Luke Cage

The Hero for Hire looks more like the Power Princess in his classic attire. He wears a tiara over his halfro and has an open chest yellow shirt. But it’s not even the princess crown that really irritates me, it’s the belt. How did he get that chain to stay around his waist? Did he put a chain on and eat until it fit. I’ve never seen adjustable chain belts.

9) The Clock King

Offensive blue and green coloring covered by clocks. This costume looks more like some geeks pajamas. And his mask is a clock as well. We get it man. You’re the Clock King.

10) Captain Ultra

Look at that costume. Look at it.

Vlaz’s List:

1) The Armadillo

Do I even need to say anything? The guy dresses up as the animal most commonly known as roadkill and expects to get stuff done. Just board the short bus to prison and get out of our way.

2) The Wasp (Hank Pym)

Hank Pym is a great guy, and an all time classic hero. But when he took his dead ex wife’s mantle and came up with this travesty of a costume, I kinda started to wonder about the guy. Purple and gold are not exactly manly heroic colors. But it’s hard to deny that the guy still manages to kick ass, stupid costume aside.

3) Timber Wolf (Silver Age)

And while we’re on the subject of manly heroic colors, I’d like to direct your attention to Timber Wolf’s silver age costume. Orange and Pink? Really? I think half the worlds population of Timber Wolves died from shame due to this association. You bastard.

4) B’Wana Beast

I know that normally I manage to refrain from swearing in my posts, but what the FUCK is this monstrosity? Does he need that mask? What’s it have to do with his Jungle underwear? Where did he get those boots? Who the hell would ever take this guy seriously? And why is he so happy to be smacking that monkey around?

5) Peacemaker

I don’t even know where to start. The riding pants? The boots? The toilet like helmet that I just can’t quite figure out? It all makes for on strange and utterly stupid outfit.

6) Black Talon

He looks like the mascot for an evil fast food chain. And that’s all I think I need to say.

7) Vibe

No please, it’s ok, don’t stop laughing. This moronic image is not a trick. This is real. This is a real comic book character. Sometimes, when I see things like this, I understand why Comics don’t get taken seriously.

8 ) Spider-Man in a Fantastic Four costume with a paper bag on his head

‘Nuff said

9) Disco Dazzler

So MARVEL decided to work with a certain record company to create a singing super hero. Marvel created the character, the Record execs were to find the real life singer, the comic would be made, and then a movie would follow. No this story is real. They were essentially trying to make a real life character. Movies and albums and concerts. And comic book adventures. It was a miserable idea. And everything about it sucked. Including Dazzler’s costume. No scratch that, ESPECIALLY her costume.

10) Obnoxio The Clown

Big fat dirty sweaty smoking clown. Any questions?

At long last, Madelyne Pryor and the Sisterhood are beaten. Most threats aren’t very feasible for the Uncanny X-Men, especially considering how many there are of them nowadays. Still, Pryor managed to give them a fight in the last issue. Now, they strike back. Storm, Emma Frost, Karma, and Dazzler strike against the Sisterhood at their home base, and Cyclops, Wolverine, Colossus, Northstar, and Domino hit them at Jean Grey’s tombstone back in New York. It’s a big fight issue, and in the end, we have two results. First of all, thanks partially to Dazzler, Psylocke gets back in her Asian body and returns to the X-Men. Secondly, Madelyne Pryor is done for, perhaps for good. However, Mastermind, Lady Mastermind, Spiral, Lady Deathstrike, and Chimera are still at large. The issue ends with Beast confronting Cyclops and Emma about both of their secrets.

All in all, this was a better issue all around from the last one. Pryor gets what she deserves, and we get some interesting fight scenes. I, for one, am glad to see Psylocke back to normal and back on the team. I’m also glad to see Dazzler do something really cool. The good news with less dialogue is that there are less opportunities for mischaracterization. The bad news is that you get some boring parts. Like that whole page where everyone just says one word or makes one noise. I did like the whole last part with Beast, and I can’t wait to see Scott and Emma’s secrets come back to bite them in the butt. Of course, that’s part of the big Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men crossover, Utopia, coming up. Greg Land’s art was a bit better this issue. The only majorly bad panel was the one with Emma, Karma, and Dazzler where they’re all in the same pose, all have bad hair, and Dazzler has no pupils or irises. Still, he’s a bad artist. The two pages of Terry and Rachel Dodson at the end were so welcome. So this issue was decent. But Matt Fraction should be much better than this. Hopefully, Utopia will revitalize this series.

Plot: 6.2 Art: 5.2 Dialogue: 6.0 Overall: 6.0

UXM511

Writer-Matt Fraction

Artist-Greg Land

The “Sisterhood” arc has thus far been a very well conceived and inviting story, a boastful combination of a strong line up (between the heroes and villains both) and a plot that is intense and captivating. A resilent effort has been made to incorporate a lot into a small arc but it’s been executed with discreet precision and this issue pulls the climax off with ease and success.

A number of things have been happening in X-Men, not only in the core title but in the various number of spin-offs and tie-ins it’s tendrils reach into, touching not only into X titles like X-Force and Wolverine but reaching the likes of New Avengers and The Cabal. It’s a lot to deal with and it deals with it all but it does not do so in a way that detracts from the main plot of this comic. Not matter what is happening to the X-Men while they are out and about in other titles, Fraction not only addresses those things but keeps the focus on the story contained within this title, which is pretty amazing.

This issue serves as the resolution to the “Sisterhood” arc and it ends it on a suprsing and satisfying note that just cements the fact that Fraction knows what he is doing.

Seriously. Who else could give the Dazzler a cool monologue and make her bad ass?

The team dynamic is amazing, not only the interaction between the roster, but the growth of the characters that Fraction now has in his well-trained hands. The story is simple but compelling, hearts are worn on the sleeves of people but it doesn’t get to depressing or empathetic, and the synergy of the whole thing just feels very neat.Greg Land, a master of the X-teams by now, does a great job on the title. The entire comic is clean cut and easy on the eyes, nothing getting to complex or crazy and it really just looks wonderful.

This whole arc was a colossal red herring and it was awesome to see it pulled off without any hitches or cliffhangers or anything else. It’s great to be able to look forward to an X-title again and as long as Fraction and Land are onboard, so am I.

A few readers were wondering about the context of the Marc Silvestri drawn panel from The Uncanny X-Men panels that I used last week. So, I’m presenting three pages from that issue (#244) for your enjoyment. This issue is entitled “Ladies’ Night” and is the first appearance of mallrat Jubilee!

Rogue throws a tantrum because she’s sick of having to share her body with Carol Danvers (who apparently has time to redecorate her room in between X-Men missions). I love seeing spindly Rogue picking up furniture and tossing it around. You gotta love that Australian Outback hideout where no one cares if you wreck the place. That stuff wouldn’t fly at the X-Mansion.

Dazzler proposes that they all take a break and stimulate the economy. Methinks Dazzler looks quite lovely all tan and sparkly.

I’ve skipped ahead a couple of pages and yes, this page is dedicated to super-heroines trying on new outfits. No super-menaces here, folks, unless you count high-heeled shoes. It does seem odd that Elisabeth is questioning the point of wearing them since she used to be a model, but who really understands Psylocke anyway? I kid, I kid, I used to love some Pyslocke once upon a time.

Wow! Wow! Wow! I can’t even begin to tell you how amazing the trailer for X-Men Origins: Wolve

Wow! Wow! Wow! I can’t even begin to tell you how amazing the trailer for X-Men Origins: Wolverine is! Today, the official MySpace page for the movie released the theatrical trailer, and let me just tell you it’s pretty amazing. I have always been a big X-Men fan, but I guess since the series was over I kind of forgot about it. I knew that this movie was in production but didn’t realize how soon it was coming out in theatres.

Hugh Jackman looks even more ripped and muscular than any of the previous 3 X-Men movies. Just when you thought his biceps couldn’t get any bigger, they do. He really looks animalistic in this movie. The scene where he comes up out of the water and is just looking right in to the camera gave me chills. He looks so ferocious!

As mentioned, I have not been following the production of this film, so it was all surprises for me. I didn’t know which mutants were going to be making a cameo, and was OVERWHELMINGLY excited to see that Gambit has a part in this movie! Not only does he appear in the movie but he seems to have a decent role if they are giving him as much screen time as they have in just the first trailer. Some of the effects of him throwing his ace of diamonds, and the beau are things that we X-Men fans have been waiting to see happen on the big screen for more than 8 years now! Sooo happy Remy has made it in to a movie. I am now wondering if they will have an Origins movie for Gambit, which would be great for all of the fans that were denied his appearance in the previous films.

As I watched through the trailer frame by frame (sad, I know) I was trying to figure out who the girl at the end of the trailer is. Is it Dazzler!? Dazzler had been rumored to be in X-Men 3: The Last Stand, but never made it to the big screen. If Dazzler AND Gambit (2 of my favorite X-Men) make it in to this movie, it could go down as the best X-Men movie ever!!!

Needless to say I am overwhelmed with anticipation for this movie and can not wait for it to come out. I can’t wait to start reading what the X-Men fans out there are saying about this trailer.

UPDATE: After a bit of research that I should have done before I posted, it turns out that the person that I think is Dazzler is actually Emma Frost!!!! EVEN BETTER! Emma Frost (aka White Queen) is also one of my favorite mutants. Here’s what the Wikipedia article says about her powers:

Emma Frost is a mutant psion capable of accessing enormous telepathic abilities. Later, she gained a “secondary mutation” which allows her to transform to an organic diamond form with enhanced strength and durability at the cost of her telepathy.

I think it’s safe to say that’s a diamond form there in the pic! Yay for Emma Frost!

Uncanny X-Men #230 is a comic book written by Chris Claremont with pencils by Marc Silvestri. Publis

Uncanny X-Men #230 is a comic book written by Chris Claremont with pencils by Marc Silvestri. Published by Marvel Comics in 1988, this holiday-themed yarn is titled “‘Twas The Night…”. Let’s summarize the book… In 10 Panels Or Less!™

< SPOILER WARNING >
Key plotpoints are pictured below. You have been warned!
< / SPOILER WARNING >

While the mutant superheroes known as the X-Men hone their combat skills, the X-Man Longshot explores the team’s new base–recently liberated from a group of cybernetic pirates known as the Reavers.

Whispering voices keep calling out to Longshot–voices that sound lonely and scared. Fearing that, somehow, they’d missed a group of prisoners during their initial search of the Reaver compound, Longshot follows the voices to a locked door.

Longshot busts the door down and discovers a huge vault, filled with stolen treasures. Not just stolen–haunted. Longshot picks up a bracelet and the psychic aura of the bracelet explains how it was forged, how it was given as a gift, and how it was stolen.

Longshot’s psychometry acts as a beacon for the haunted items–hundreds, thousands of them–and soon he’s overwhelmed by the power of their grief.

The X-Men recover their friend, and their proper telepath Psylocke enables everyone to see and hear what Longshot is experiencing.

Longshot wants to return all the stolen loot to the rightful owners. Wolverine disagrees, suggesting that they have more important things to do than play Santa. (At this point in their history, the X-Men have faked their own deaths so they can more effectively combat their enemies.)

Colossus–the man of metal with the heart of a poet–makes the argument that, “If we cast aside our basic human decency, our conscience, do we not lose so much more?” That is an argument that no one in a Claremont story can ever overcome.

Longshot “reads” each piece of treasure while Psylocke shields him from psychic overload and simultaneously relays that data to another X-Man who does her best to pinpoint the original owners.

The X-Men then divide up the loot and teleport all over the world, bringing the stolen goods back to where they belong.

Longshot cries. The X-Men win. And even the curmudgeonly Wolverine concedes that this exercise wasn’t a complete waste of time.

Dazzler (Alison Blaire) is a Marvel Comics superheroine, associated with the X-Men. She first appear

Dazzler (Alison Blaire) is a Marvel Comics superheroine, associated with the X-Men. She first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #130 (February 1980).

A mutant with the ability to convert sound vibrations into light and energy beams, Dazzler was originally developed as a cross-promotional, multi-media creation between Casablanca Records, Filmworks, and Marvel Comics until the tie-ins were dropped in 1980. The character was created by a committee of Marvel staff, principally writer/editor Tom DeFalco and illustrator John Romita, Jr.

Despite the fact that Dazzler was originally commissioned as a disco singer, the character shifted to other musical genres, including rock and adult contemporary. She starred in a self-titled solo series in the early 1980s, and later joined the cast of the X-Men. She was briefly a member of the spin-off group Excalibur but now has re-joined the X-Men.
