Official plot synopsis: Jonah Hex (Josh Brolin) is a scarred drifter and bounty hunter of last resort, a tough and stoic gunslinger who can track down anyone…and anything. Having survived death, Jonah’s violent history is steeped in myth and legend, and has left him with one foot in the natural world and one on the “other side.” His only human connection is with Leila (Megan Fox), whose life in a brothel has left her with scars of her own. But Jonah’s past is about to catch up with him when the U.S. military makes him an offer he can’t refuse: in exchange for his freedom from the warrants on his head, he must track down and stop the dangerous terrorist Quentin Turnbull (John Malkovich). But Turnbull, who is gathering an army and preparing to unleash Hell, is also Jonah’s oldest enemy and will stop at nothing until Jonah is dead. Based on the legendary graphic novel, “Jonah Hex” is an epic adventure thriller about one man’s personal quest for redemption against the vast canvas of the battle between good and evil.

Batwoman by Greg Rucka (writer), J.H. Williams (artist), Dave Stewart (colors) , The Question by Greg Rucka (writer), Cully Hamner (artist), Dave McCraig (colors)

The Story: First, Rucka told us the Batwoman arc with her lunatic sister and the crazy religious nuts in Gotham. Then, Rucka set the last issue in Kate Kane’s childhood. Now he fastforwards to Kate being forced out of Westpoint because she’s gay. We follow her drifting after that, until she has a moment of clarity. Rucka also gives us a backup story starring the Question, who is still on the track of an international smuggling cartel. It’s bigger than she can handle on her own, so she calls in some help.

What’s Good: Greg Rucka is writing some really smart comics. There is a whole world of untapped stories with a gay character like Kate Kane and he’s digging to get the best ones. Kate’s personality is very strong and her focus is laser-like. Rucka has given her the integrity, professionalism and obsessiveness of a Bruce Wayne or a Dick Grayson. This makes her a very strong addition to the Bat-family. But, like the best writers, Rucka knows that it’s not enough just to show what she’s got. Rucka tests her, by putting up the two most defining characteristics, her sexuality and her ambition, and putting them in direct, irreconcilable conflict. Her response is what makes her a hero. The Question story was equally smart, but less of a character-builder than out-and-out detective crime-fighting adventure and so was a lot of fun.

Williams has adopted a gritty style and a starkness to his panel interiors for the scenes set in the past that do a great job of telling Rucka’s story. The facial expressions, although rough and scratchy, communicate a wealth of emotional pain and conflict (check out the scene with Kate speaking with her colonel). The art set in the present (the meeting of the religious nuts) is much more realistic and richly textured. I checked the credits to see if the inkers had changed for those two different settings because the art is so different, but it appears that Williams can manage the two different styles at the same time. Pretty impressive. The color work in the past settings is subdued, but you really get to see what Stewart can do with the scenes in the present.

What’s Not So Good: Not enough of either story. Give me more!

Conclusion: Rucka has put Detective on my pull list. If Detective, Batman and Robin, Batgirl, Red Robin and Batman are what happens when Bruce Wayne is taken out of the picture, I hope Bruce never comes back. The Bat-family of titles is fast becoming a must-read for smart readers.

Final Crisis – Revelations

Portada de Philip Tan
Guión de Greg Rucka
Dibujo de Philip Tan

Final Crisis: Revelations #1-5

Precio: $ 3,99 c/u

Movie should be out in the summer and it looks bad ass. The picture totally makes you wonder what really happend back in the times of the first turkey feast.

Vamos a ver.

¡¡¡¡SPOILER ALERT!!! LO QUE SIGUE PUEDE ARRUINARTE TERRIBLEMENTE EL NÚMERO. ASÍ QUE LEELO ANTES DE CONTINUAR. CREEME, VALE MUCHISIMO LA PENA.

… Bruce Wayne of Earth… RISE!!!!!

¡Oh my God!

If you buy GL #48 and Blackest Night #5 today, read them in that order. Now with 300% more Larfleeze.

By James Robinson (writer), Mark Bagley (artist) The Story: The JLA arrive at their headquarters onl

By James Robinson (writer), Mark Bagley (artist)

The Story: The JLA arrive at their headquarters only to find it empty and destroyed in this Blackest Night tie-in. As they move deeper into unknown danger, they’re confronted not only with former teammates from past incarnations of the team, but a former loved one and a hated adversary as well.

What’s Good: Once they get passed the obligatory Black Lantern info dump at the beginning of this issue, Bagley and Robinson execute an effective opener to the Justice League’s arrival at the Hall of Justice that balances the right amounts of mysterious and foreboding. Robinson uses this issue to basically write a JLA Haunted House story, and it works well in that respect. This handling of the story also helps raise the creepy factor, which hasn’t always been high in some of the other Blackest Night crossovers. Extra credit goes to the writer for a somewhat disturbing reveal towards the end of the story involving a… well, let’s say salt lick and not ruin it for you.

Bagley works a fair amount of magic here with what he’s given. His double-page spread of the team entering the destroyed and vacant Hall stands out. He also pencils the heck out of two action sequences in the book. In the first, he visualizes Red Tornado’s powers in a dynamic and striking way. The second involves a clever use of Dr. Light’s light-blast that, after a second to consider it, seems fairly obvious considering his murky makeover. Credit should also be given to colorist Pete Pantazis for this great twist on his power.

What’s Not So Good: You know, you can put them in cool black costumes and transform them into heart-consuming zombies, but that doesn’t make the Justice League Detroit anything more than, well, the Justice League Detroit. Therein lies the main problem with this issue of JL of A. I mean, when your principal villain is Vibe, you’re maybe going to have some problems convincing the readers that they should be filled with fear. Robinson tries his best to give a certain amount of weight to not only the Black Lanterns, but our intrepid heroes as well, but he doesn’t quite pull it off. The script never elevates this installment of Blackest Night above any of the other countless tie-ins out there, and that failure coupled with the C or D-List status of the main characters firmly places this issue ever closer to the bottom of the comic stack.

Nitpicker alert! Um, is Red Tornado mentally deficient? Isn’t he an android? Shouldn’t androids be smarter and better than humans or something? Because this is about the fiftieth time that this guy’s body has been destroyed and it’s insane to me that he’s not better prepared by now. Yeah, okay, Vibe has the ability to emit shockwaves in concentrated bursts and getting hit with those would suck if you were made of machinery. However, I’d still be kicking myself at getting my ass handed to me by Vibe of all people. Gypsy lasted longer than you, man! Gypsy! Let this be a lesson to you. Really.

Conclusion: It’s an improvement from last issue, but the lack of appealing leads and the presence of dull villains continues to bring JLA down. I look forward to the day that the potential of a Robinson/Bagley Justice League title becomes more than just potential.

Grade: C

And now the ‘ring quest’ is complete. For many others who have also completed this set

And now the ‘ring quest’ is complete. For many others who have also completed this set…it’s a goal poor Larfleeze–”Agent Orange”–will likely never get to do.

As I’ve said before, I think this is just about the coolest promotion for comics I’ve seen.

Of all the rings, of COURSE the coolest wound up being the Green Lantern ring. Because when you come right down to it–whether that first year or so following Kyle’s book, or that brief period after reading the Amalgam “Iron Lantern” issue when I was all the more interested in GL, to more recent years–it’s the “original” of the Corps.

Another thing that I wonder about is what other similar promotions could be done? Including the year it came out (1991), next year (2010) will be 20 years OF The Infinity Gauntlet; 2011 obviously being the 20th “anniversary.” How cool would it be to have something like this ring promotion for a re-issue of the original mini-series (6 gems, 6 issues…nice, no?).

Or sticking with DC: what about a Legion of Super-Heroes ring? As with all these Lantern Corps rings…just change the color of plastic used and the little symbol on the top piece. Such a ring could be tied to a special Legion issue or annual or issue of Adventure Comics or the like.

And what about a Flash ring? Given Barry’s back, and I believe the Flash-costume-in-a-ring-for-easy-access was his thing…so why not use the red plastic again and put the lightning bolt on the top piece? And tie this, say, to the new Flash #1 by Johns.

The Publisher has commenced the story which will be the climax to the Sinestro Corps War (green lantern) story arc.

Blackest night will be more of a solid arc for DC, rather than the tongue in cheek Marvel Zombies graphic novels. The first edition was released In June of this year and will run until spring next year. If DC can nail this, it could potentially release the stranglehold that Marvel has on the comic book market.

Marvel are coming to the end of the Dark Reign storyline which led directly from Secret Invasion. The events of Dark Reign will come to a climax during the new years ‘Siege’ story. Brian Michael Bendis has gone on record to say that after the events of siege, there won’t be another massive event that will encompass the whole of the Marvel universe like Reign, writers will be concentrating more on individual characters’ storylines.

If Blackest night performs well in stores it could pave the way for DC to capitalise on the gap left by Marvel for a long running crossover event and bag DC some much-needed new readers.

For those of us well-acquainted with the DC Animated Universe, this particular villain may look familiar. That’s because he also makes an appearance as Music Master in Justice League’s two-parter “Legends”:

Lately Superman has become even more of an everyman hero in the hands of Geoff Johns and James Robinson. Superman/Clark Kent has his roots in Kansas farmland after all, and his core values aren’t the same as Batman or Wonder Woman. Batman’s personal tragedy propels him, and Wonder Woman’s sense of duty keeps her motivated, plus that whole history of being raised among Amazons.

At the end of the day, though, Superman is the kind of guy you can sit down with and talk about family issues. And he’d have good advice and experiences he could share with you. Beyond the super powered stuff and being an alien from another planet, if those were your problems.

James Robinson really gets that about Superman as well, and his first scripting run on the character is fantastic. Okay, I’ll admit that the villain plot of The Coming of Atlas is a bit simplistic and creaky, but that isn’t the real story. The real story is even more basic and much deeper than villains trying to take a hero’s head off.

The graphic novel is the story of a boy and his dog. From page 1 to the final page, that’s what this book is about, and the dog lover and father in me was ecstatic about that. In fact, I’m pushing the book onto my 12 year old now, and I’m ranting to you about it as well.

I loved the argument Lois and Clark had over whether Clark should keep Krypto, and how that argument escalated into whether Clark loved her and why he should love her even though he could have probably had anyone. Clark certainly answered that question with more aplomb than most guys out there would have.

But the thing that really sold me on the tale was Superman’s simple love for Krypto, and the way the dog returned that love. The scene with Superman playing fetch with Krypto out in space with Green Lantern watching was priceless. (Of course, it also made me wonder where GL was when Superman was getting the stuffing pounded out of him later.)

I wasn’t really sold on Atlas as a villain. For one, he didn’t really have an agenda against Superman, and I didn’t really know what happened to him at the end. However, Renato Guedes’s art is eye-popping. The battle scenes were terrific, and the black and white washed “memory” scenes of Lois and Clark were an absolute visual treat that really stood apart from the rest of the book.

One of Robinson’s greatest strengths is his vision of the characters he writes about. He can touch the core of their values, hopes, and fears like few other writers can. Even with the story isn’t particularly strong, Robinson’s portrayal of the heroes/characters will be. Highly recommended for the last scenes especially.

Still unsure about continuing Domino Lady, and I’m not real happy about Herc going up to $3.99. Queen Sonja was so-so, and I’m giving it another issue or two before I decide to cut it or not. Otherwise, pretty standard stuff for me.
