Google Wave is in a word, interesting. I’m not sure how to describe it except that you seem to

Google Wave is in a word, interesting. I’m not sure how to describe it except that you seem to be able to do anything and everything from chat to video to playing games. Except that it’s a little quirky, a little slow and a little odd to get used to but it is a preview so this is all acceptable.

I finally have a few peeps I know Google Wave and have actually been able to play some pong (poorly due to choppy sync issues), some chess (poorly due to lack of skill) and see real-time chat updates and such. Pretty cool. Now the real test. Can I used it to play D&D 4e. I’ve seen a few blog posts out there about how people manage their waves and their games and Quinn’s post on At-Will looks promising. I say looks because I have yet to try out playing D&D on a wave.

However, doing what I do best, I prepared for just such an eventuality, should the need ever arise (which it should since I’m in Windsor atm, arg). I scoured lists of gadgets and robots looking for anything that might help run a D&D session. Her’s what I’ve managed to find so far loosely organized by category:

Dice:

Name: Dicy

Description: A nice robot that lets you add [2d6+4] type syntax into your wave and it’ll spit out the results as [2d6+4=8+4=12]. This is handy for in place rolls wherever you need them with whichever dice and whichever modifiers.

Address: dice-y@appspot.com

Name: Wave Dice

Description: A gadget that you can anchor in a blip, select which dice to roll and away you go. Unfortunately you can’t add you own additions or subtraction so there’s no d20+5. I do perhaps still see a use for this in combination with Fighty (see below) for rolling initiative.

Address: http://wavedicegadget.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/dice.xml

Mapping:

Name: Fighty

Description: By far the coolest gadget I’ve found whether for gaming or not, fighty lets you add maps from MapLib (also very cool), zoom and pan the map and add markers to the map. Why is this so cool? Because on MapLib you can add your own maps, ie your own battlemaps like for instance from Dundjinni. This lets you handle the strategy battle part without much fuss.

Tip#1: add http://www.savevsgeek.com/fighty.php?id=6567 as a gadget for a plain sheet of graph paper although there’s already quite a few D&D maps that you can search for and use in your wave.

Tip#2: Keep your maps in a separate wav (as mentioned by Quinn).

Tip#3: Add the wave dice gadget to these maps to roll and initiative (just a though. You’d likely still want to track the results in a blip so dicy may be the way to go)

Address: http://www.savevsgeek.com/fighty.php?id=xxx where xxx is the id from MapLib

Name: Napkin

Description: Barely worth mentioning but this or any other whiteboard type gadget could suffice for some sort of ad hoc battle map. While this may not be so useful for a battle map without a nice grid there could perhaps be other uses.

Address: http://my-wave-gadgets.appspot.com/wave/NapkinGadget.xml

Misc:

Name: Treeify

Description: Treeify has a cool concept of being able to make a hierarchy of waves which I figure might be handy for organizing the 4 waves recommended in Quinn’s post. Have one root with the title of the campaign and then have 4 children; OOC, Combat (with fighty), Reference and the main IC (In Character) game. It might just be me but I’m having some issue getting this to work properly so the jury’s still out on this one.

Address: treeify@appspot.com

Name: List

Description: I thought this gadget might help make tables for when that was required however this app is in it’s very early stage at this point and not all that useful.

Address: http://list-gadget.googlecode.com/svn/branches/stable/gadget.xml

Along with cool ideas to add color coding and action tags, I’d like to expand on one of the 4 waves; reference. At the moment I’ve been playing around with Obsidian Portal, adding content into the wiki and such and I think that I will likely incorporate this into my regular campaigns (i.e. sans google wave) as a way to track characters, npcs, items, campaign dates etc… I think that if or rather when I can get a wession? (wave D&D session) going, I might skip the 4th reference wave and just provide links as required within the blips to the appropriate wiki or npc etc… on my obsidian portal campaign. This should help streamline and focus the info in the wave to were it’s needed.

Again, looks cool, can’t wait to try it out! Just waiting for all my players to set up their google wave accounts

Okay, so it’s not quite Thanksgiving yet, but I’m darn excited. I have today and tomorro

Okay, so it’s not quite Thanksgiving yet, but I’m darn excited. I have today and tomorrow off, so today we cleaned the house and made the brine for our turkeys. Don’t worry, one’s for my dad.

Later, once the brine is properly cooled, we’ll add the ice water and the first turkey (weighing in at 24 lbs., the other at 18 lbs.) At some point today, two of our friends, Sean and James should get here and we’ll be gaming. (D&D that is) Whilst destroying foes and raking in the dough, I’ll be knitting away at the second of Kim’s slippers. After showing her the first, I’m proud to report that they’re “exactly right!” This quote may not seem like much to you, but try making something someone’s late grandmother made with no pattern, why don’t you.

Anyway, I’m confident that I’ll have the slippers done by this time tomorrow and I’ll be working away at the pompoms, which will be small, but I have yet to create a good pompom…at least the cats will have new toys. ^^

Sometime tomorrow, we’ll stick the turkey in the oven. (The second turkey will hit the brine at that point.)Since our 21 lb beast last year cooked in about 2 hours, we’re thinking 2 1/2 hours this year. Once we finish dinner and dessert and have had time to properly digest, we’ll put the second turkey in and promptly deliver it and all the fixings to Dad. Speaking of that guy, I’ll probably be able to start his socks before the end of tomorrow…yay!

I shall post tomorrow night to update on all relevant info. Ta!

So we had to leave Merritt because the guy that was generous enough to let us stay at his motel, Pet

So we had to leave Merritt because the guy that was generous enough to let us stay at his motel, Peter, lost his job. I blame Brian. It definitely wasn’t my fault ’cause I didn’t sleep in the motel that night. I woke up in somebody’s backyard. That’s when I lost my guitar.

The people whose yard it was were concerned for me having somewhere to sleep. I dazily explained I was staying at the Double D Inn and made my way off their property. I somehow found my way back to the DoubleD and slept about an hour before Peter came in and told us we had to go. Apparently his boss was coming back into town and Brian had been knocking on peoples doors the night before. Peter had two jobs and he lost both of them somehow, if that’s even possible. Poor Peter.

So now I’m realizing I don’t have my guitar so we retrace our steps from the night before, if that’s even possible. The bar we were at said I had it with me when they kicked us out. Hopefully that’s a last call kind of kicking out but I’m afeared it wasn’t. So now we’re looking for the house I woke up at when a van pulls up asking if I’m Trevor Porter. I am and I’m reunited with my guitar to my extreme relief.

So today’s ride is a generalization of Merritt locals, Natives, fellow travelers and random friendlies, driving us to the fire camp and back. But, yeah, the fires don’t need any more volunteers. So here we are in Merritt with nowhere to stay and nowhere to go. Both of us barely slept the night before and we’re exhausted. We even went into the police station and asked if we could sleep in some cells. Nope, we had to break the law. We looked around for something illegal to do but everything was too much effort so we continued down the street out of town..

Hasan saw nothing above beyond the pit’s rim, but the jangling, noisy progress of a band of orcs could be confused only with the ways of goblins. In either case, Hasan wanted to be on level ground with them. “Up, up, up,” he urged. “Defend the rope, we have to get out of here!” He pushed those climbing the rope forward, trying to help as many up as he could.

Stephan hastily accepted the statuette back from Hasan. A nod of thanks was all he could afford before following the Prince’s advice, and was the first to scramble out of the pit.

He saw Miklos come up the rope behind him as he heard the approaching orcs’ armor clank as they started to maneuver through the ‘teeth’ at the entrance to the spider’s cave. “Blessed Halav,” Stephan blasphemed at the unpleasant thought of more battle. He genuflected the Halav sign telling himself to later repent to a greater degree for having muttered His name out of frustration.

Drawing his sword and hefting his shield into place, Stephan tried to assess the approach of the orcs. How close were they? He glanced around the chamber looking for advantages. See a pile of slag, he alighted on top, making sure he had good footing, so as to have a height advantage. He was, additionally, poised to the side of where the orcs would likely enter, giving him more upper hand.

Feldard agreed with Hasan’s assessment of the situation. Better to be fighting the orcs on level than to be trapped below. The dwarf impatiently waited his turn on the rope and clambered his way up as quick as his bulk would allow. It was by no means graceful or quiet but with the help of the others he managed to make it over the ledge of the pit before the orcs were on scene.

Miklos silently cursed. The orcs would be in the cavern before they were all up the rope. Feldard rose from the pit, and Miklos gestured toward the tunnel where the marching was coming from. He silently drifted to the right, flipped his book open and prepared a sleep spell. He gestured to the dwarf to take to the left.

Feldard moved away from the pit edge and pulled out his crossbow loading it as swiftly as possible. He’d likely only get one shot with it .. but the dwarf was quickly learning to take the advantage in a battle where ever and however it presented itself. A quick check assured him that his axe was easily at hand once the bolt was away. Feldard waited crossbow already in position.

Hernane sighed with frustration, she knew the orcs would be back. She hoped that they had not found Tekaryon and that he was safe. She quickly clambered up the rope after Feldard and crouched down beside him, pulling out her handaxe. The last encounter had unnerved her, what a chaotic situation however facing orcs in battle was something that she could make sense of. Let these orcs come on, she would give them cold Dwarf iron. She glanced at her companions, and noticed that everyone apart from a few minor scratches looked healthy enough. She could not help but admire the way that they all took up the best battle positions depending on their specific skills. Feldard has done well training this group she thought to herself.

Miklos suggested the center ground to Hernane with another gesture then continued with his study.

It was always difficult holding a read spell in his mind under pressure, still the battle at Sukiskyn had steeled his mettle, and he prepared as best he could awaiting the shadows of the orc guard before he released his incantation.

When the first of the party of orcs emerged from the stalactite/stalagmite bars, Miklos released his spell. He only caught three of them. It seemed the orc scouting party numbered eight, which left five orcs to contend with.

The humanoid warriors threw their spears, targeting the dwarves and mage. Stephan leapt from his ambush position, cutting down one of the them from behind before it could execute its spear throw. The orc party now numbered four.

Miklos cursed again as he saw that his spell was not as effective as he had intended. Then his eyes grew wide as he saw two spears headed his way. He awkwardly attempted to duck and roll away. One of the weapons pierced his calf muscle.

Feldard released his crossbow bolt. A miss. Damn! He glanced to his former betrothed. She too was struck by one of the spears, but it was only a scratch.

The orcs drew their swords. One turned to face Stephan and three charged toward the others.

Maruc hauled his bulk up the rope, the armour slowing him down. The sounds of battle spurred him on. With relief, he elbowed himself to the lip and watched the dwarves charge forth to meet the orcs. The priest grunted as he brought his knee over the edge and crawled heavily to his feet. He swung his shield from his back, loosened his flail and smiled as joined the fray.

Hasan was the last to scale the rope and he did so quickly and with fluid grace typical of an elf.

L’incendio è mio e me lo gestisco io.

- “Eh, a casa mia, in salotto”.

- “A casa tua?? Mah”.

Because killing and collecting can be fun. That’s why thousands of people play those games. A

Because killing and collecting can be fun. That’s why thousands of people play those games.

A lot of the gripes about similarity between classes and general meh-ing of 4E are valid. It’s fun, but it’s a very particular kind of fun, and doesn’t really support any other kind.

Here’s what I’d like to see in my killing and collecting games: a system whereby the characters face greater and greater challenges, which they can overcome not just through increased character power, but primarily through increased player skill. Increased character power is not the only way a character can change, but it is a valid one. But maybe getting *stronger* is less interesting than getting *broader*, and having more options. Knowing how to best use those options only comes through PLAYER experience.

Also, finding a magic item should be 1) Rare, and 2) Freakin’ Awesome. It should not happen every level, or every game, or even every campaign. When I find a magic sword, it should be a major event. And that sword should be 1) A plot device, and 2) Freakin’ Awesome. A +1 vs Undead is not a bonus. I do not give a rip about a 5% or even a 10% bonus against one type of enemy. That’s not a magic item. I want the White Hammer of Aarda to VAPORIZE the undead. And I want Vrrgonath the Dark Lord of Kittens to sit up and take notice and realize he’s got a problem, and set about making my life difficult.

4E is essentially a WoW clone converted for tabletop play. And that’s fine. It does that well. And I’d rather sit around a table with minis and a pizza and my friends than in front of a screen knowing I pay 15$ a month for this experience.

But it’s definitely not the only game I’m gonna have fun playing.

Wow, that was… almost completely incoherent. Sorry ’bout that. There’s a point in there… somewhere. I think. =\
