<p>When Mister Three Sixty first wrote about transmedia storytelling <a href="http://misterthreesixty.wordpress.com/2009/04/29/brand-narratives-whats-the-story/">here</a>, he didn’t realise what a rabbit hole he’d fallen into. Once in the hole, you find more and more people are talking and writing on the subject. Rather fewer of them are actually doing anything about it.</p>
<p>So here are some of the best examples of the thing in action;</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Star Wars</strong> – original movies and franchise, prequel movies, Clone wars animation, comic books, toys and on and on.</li>
<li><strong>Heroes</strong> – TV show, with weekly online comic (sponsored by Nissan), graphic novel , fictional website for Primatech, a front company in the series (sponsored by Cisco), ‘create your hero’ mobile phone competition (sponsored by Sprint), weekly online and mobile trivia games, blogs written by characters and on and on.</li>
</ul>
<p>Entertainment properties do it well because media businesses own a range of platforms and have the impetus to extend their IP as widely as possible. Unfortunately this model isn’t exactly replicated in the marketing world.</p>
<p>Some good brand examples;</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Coca-Cola’s</strong> ‘Happiness Factory’ –a <a href="http://hf3.coca-cola.com/">fictional world</a> behind the original ad spot.</li>
<li><strong>Audi’s</strong>  ‘<a href="http://mckinney.com/#/work/client,22/item,116/">The Art of the H3ist’</a> – <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Art_of_the_Heist">Alternate Reality Game meets Advertising</a>.</li>
</ul>
<p>Mister Three Sixty is still working out a practical framework for marrying business strategy with transmedia story development, but this chart from <a href="http://www.personalizemedia.com/">Gary Hayes</a> seems like a promising startpoint. Thanks to <a href="http://robbierae.wordpress.com/">Robbie</a> and <a href="http://www.storyplanning.de/">Sven</a> for some good thinking and ideas &#8211; they really helped Mister Three Sixty’s journey.</p>

<description><![CDATA[As much an excuse to have a cool advert on my blog as anything else, I thought I&#8217;d record my t]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>As much an excuse to have a cool advert on my blog as anything else, I thought I&#8217;d record my two peneth on the latest VW Golf TV commercial by DDB London.</p>
<p>Even though (for me) owning a Golf went out of fashion with drinking Diamon White in the local park and mustering up the courage to buy a packet of cigarettes, I&#8217;ve sat up and paid attention to the slick production of the new Golf ad featuring a German car designer fighting it out with clones of himself in a factory, with all the kung fu mayhem that that entails.</p>
<p>As ever, people with too little to do and to much time on their hands (105 and counting) are insisting that the advert should be shown after the 9pm watershed in the UK.</p>
<p>The problem, as they see it, is that the advert glorifies violence and I guess feel that their kids will soon be fighting it out with windscreen wipers and petrol caps.</p>
<p>I have several problems with this kind of attempt at censorship. Firstly, this advert shows what is obviously fantasy violence and really no more violent than any given episode of Doctor Who or most popular video games.</p>
<p>Secondly banning this advert from tv before the watershed will do nothing because it takes about two seconds for anyone, young children included, to find on any video sharing site, not to mention on every one of the newspaper websites &#8211; <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2009/jan/05/volkswagen-fight-ad-complaints">see Monday&#8217;s Guardian </a>- that will be reporting on (and giving a huge amount of publicity to) this new VW Golf advertising campaign.</p>
<p>On top of all this, in a new economic age where advertising revenues are going down the drain and magazine and tv ad rates are falling through the floor, do we want to let these over sensitive busy bodies reduce their earning potential any further?</p>
<p>Well, without any further to do, here&#8217;s the ad in all it&#8217;s ass-kicking glory:</p>

<p style="text-align:left;">Dziś kilka słów o kopii reklamowej, która opiera się na kreacji muzycznej. To nagrodzona w 2008 roku canneńskim Złotym Lwem &#8211; jednym z najbardziej znaczących wyróżnień międzynarodowej reklamy za kreację &#8211; reklama Volkswagena Golfa. Otrzymujemy tu  nietypowy format, 1 minutowy, już pozwalający na zaznaczenie formy-choć naturalnie trudno tu mówić o jej rozwoju-a nawet wprowadzenie lektora &#8211; post mortum głos Richarda Burtona &#8211; który, pragnę tu zauważyć, jest w wyraźny sposób potraktowany jako integralny element pejzażu dźwiękowego &#8211; pejzażu towarzyszącego tym razem nocnej podróży po ulicach nienazwanego miasta. Strukturalnie jak i estetycznie mamy tu do czynienia z kreacją ambientową, autorstwa bliskiego tej estetyce Cliffa Martineza, kompozytora który przypomnę, jest autorem ścieżki dźwiękowej do amerykańskiej wersji Solaris Stanisława Lema w interpretacji reżyserskiej Stevena Soderbergha. W tym wypadku słyszymy wyraźne konotacje z tamtą muzyką, która w obu obrazach pełni rolę neutralnego desenia dla płynącej, niepospiesznej narracji filmowej. Nie jest w istocie elementem formotwórczym, ale jednocześnie posługuje się wyrazistym kodem estetyczym i tym samym bezpośrednio wprowadza nas w pewną atmoferę konkretnego świata dźwiękowego. Łatwo poddającego się percepcji, a zarazem pozostawiającego margines interpretacji czy niedopowiedzenia.<br />
Ciekawa jest także sama forma tego spotu. Raz, że jednominutowa, a więc dająca możliwość głębszego wejścia w samą opowieść. Dwa, że w założeniu niezwykle filmowa, co nadal wydaje się dość awangardowe nawet wśród kreacji dla produktów wysoceangażujących. W istocie jest to wizualno-dźwiękowa próba zainteresowania odbiorcy reklamowanym produktem, gdzieś tam odwołująca się do jego wyższych zmysłów estetycznych, a zarazem do jego wyższych potrzeb konsumenckich (i głębszych zasobów portfela). To pomysł agencji (w tym wypadku DDB) dla producentów samochodów, choćby wspomniec tu serię &#8220;The Hire&#8221; BMW, czy wysublimowane estetycznie propozycje Audi &#8211; o których zapewne w kolejnych wpisach.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">P.S. Sam się złapałem na tym, że kampanie określam nazwami marek &#8211; a nie ich twórców.</p>

Una maravilla creada por <a href="http://www.ddblondon.com/" target="_blank">DDB London</a>.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Es ahora cuando siento muchísima envidia del nivel de apertura del que gozan en el viejo continente y mucho más específicamente en un país como el <strong><span style="color:#99cc00;">Reino Unido</span></strong>, con una de las mejores varas creativas del mundo y con la gente que tiene la mentalidad para comprenderla, hacerla suya y disfrutarla.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong><span style="color:#99cc00;">Karis</span></strong>, un chico de 25 años que hace algunos ayeres decidió darle a su vida un giro de 380º al convertirse en transexual, y después otro giro al convertirse en una <em>vedette</em> profesional que decidió prestar su imagen para protagonizar este maravilloso anuncio que no deja lugar a dudas del beneficio del producto -total, si un depilador es capaz de hacer maravillas por un hombre, imagínate-, pero más que éso, de la inteligencia de los creadores y de los que aceptaron que una idea así se filmara:</p>

Ένας σκύλος τραγουδάει με πολύ μαγκιά το <em>I&#8217;m a man</em> του Spencer Davis Group όσο είναι συνοδηγός στο POLO και γίνεται κακομοίρης όταν είναι εκτός. Η συγκεκριμένη διαφήμιση έχει τραβήξει την προσοχή φιλοζωικών οργανώσεων που διαμαρτύρονται για την προβολή της εικόνας ενός δυστυχισμένου σκύλου για να πουληθούν αμάξια. Αν και είμαι υπέρ της άποψης η διαφήμιση να αποφεύγει τέτοιες κακοτοπιές, νομίζω ότι αυτές οι διαμαρτυρίες είναι στα όρια της υπερβολής.</p>
