I’ve only been in NC for 17 months.  With 30+ years of living in the Midwest behind me and only one NC winter thus far, I’m intoxicated with the knowledge that I can grow food year-round.  Even better is that I live right across the road from Laughing Spirit Farm (LSF), which has been growing SOLE** food for years.

Sunday was the first day of the challenge, well timed because my neighbor at LSF had just dug up sweet potatoes and carrots for us and all I could think about was how awesome it is to have this kind of food at your fingertips all the time.

Unfortunately, I didn’t realize I’d served my first DDC meal until we were running our fingers around our plates for those last elusive crumbs.  By the time it crossed my mind and I reached for the camera, this is all that was left to show for it:

Here’s what I served and how it measured up:

• Thyme and garlic beer bread – the flour was milled just a few miles away (from locally grown wheat), thyme was from my garden, garlic was from LSF.  Beer was from CO.
• Sweet potato fries – dug up a week ago at LSF.
• Roasted carrots and garlic – carrots dug up that morning at LSF; garlic harvested there a few months ago.
• Chickpea cutlets – not sure where the chickpeas are from (but I’m growing my own in 2010!), but the thyme and sage were from my herb garden and the rolled oats and vital wheat gluten were milled just a few miles away.  Not sure about the tamari, sesame oil, or fresh lemon juice.  I get a big fat F on the smoked paprika – it’s from Spain.
• Whole wheat pasta with garden pesto – pasta is from TJ’s, so at the very least it was shipped from CA.  The basil, spinach, and kale in the pesto were from my garden, olive oil from CA, not sure where the pine nuts came from.
• White wine – a California white.  I live just a few miles from a vineyard, but didn’t have any of their bottles on hand.

All in all, a good start to the Dark Days Challenge.  I need to make more of an effort to get my booze from local sources, but otherwise I feel pretty good about the whole meal.

Next week should be much more of a challenge; we’ll be on the road for 2 1/2 days headed for the Midwest where year round farmers’ markets are scarce, and my mother’s pantry resembles the rations of a well-thought out bomb shelter.  If I find a restaurant in Chicago that serves SOLE food, does that count?

I’m a few minutes in, so you’ll just have to listen to the others.

It’s funny (even more funny to my library school friends) that I am now cataloging in our Information Center. I never thought I would be a cataloger but things happen and now I am one. It is very interesting because you really find out about your collection and get to know what is being added.  Recommending books is one thing but actually picking up that book and looking at it up close and personal is even better. It really is a “hands-on” experience.

Yes, I mostly “copy-catalog” from OCLC but I have had to create some records (or derive some records) and that’s when you have to put on your thinking cap to add content.

I am also a bit shocked that I now have the four volume set of DDC 21 on my desk. That set has been languishing on the shelf for years but now a work day doesn’t go by without cracking open a volume or two.

Believe me, I experienced some trepidation when I found out that I would be cataloging but after several months it is part of my daily work and I am learning from it and finding it rather fulfilling!  Cataloging is the first step in getting the items into the hands of our customers and that makes it even more important! Man, oh, man, I feel like I’m gushing. Make it stop!

2011 ska nationalbibliografiska avdelningen på Kungl. bibl. gå över till klassifikations systememet DDC – Dewey. Andra får följa efter. Det kräver mycket arbete, bl a med översättning av stora delar av klassifikationssystemet. Se KBs sida om Dewey.

Nu har den kommande förändringen nåttsidor i DN – Siffrorna tar över i bibliotekskhyllorna. 3 sidor om bibliotekens hylluppställning!

Läsarkommentarerna är intressanta – “Kurt” säger: “Jag har erfarenhet av båda systemen, och Dewey systemet är suveränt mycket bättre. Om de dessutom märker varje bok med både klassifikation och de första bokstäverna i författarens efternamn, så är det också mycket lättare att finna boken i hyllan.” Andra läsare är skeptiska till förändring, kostnad eller till att klassifikation alls behövs, när det finns kategorier.

I artikeln nämns också Sture bibliotek, Stockholms stadsbiblioteks nyaste bibliotek. Det är ett litet bibliotek i Tunellbaneplanet vid Stureplan som har cirka 2900 böcker och andra medier, varav en stor del är utlånad. Då är det lätt att hitta oavsett vilket hyllplaceringssystem man än använder.

DN intervjuar även bl a Gunnar Sahlin och Kristina Lugn om deras hyllplacering av böcker hemma . Jag börjar fundera på min egen metod hemma. Den började nog med ämnesvis samling av facklitteratur och pocketskön i författarordning (i dubbla rader). Därefter har det blivit allt mer av desperata försök att få in fler böcker. Det börjar bli dags för en rejäl utgallring alternativt större hem.

DDC-säsongen avslutades ju traditionsenligt med Höstkastet i Kalmar. Trots finalförlusten där för team “DDC or Die” (Dieter Johansson/Niclas Bergehamn) mot Haningelaget Thomas Lindell/Johan Eriksson, behåller Dieter Johansson (Värnamo FC) förstaplatsen på rankingen före Uppsalas Johan Josjö och Stefan Palm.

Notera att i den svenska rankingen räknas endast deltagande i inhemska tävlingar med. Johan Josjö får tex alltså inga svenska rankingpoäng för sitt VM-brons i lag med Dave Hesselberth från USA i somras.

Library Journal posted a great article the other day profiling libraries migrating away from DDC to alternative classification systems. I found it pretty fair and balanced and definitely worth the read. Check it out if you have a minute.

Höstkastet i Kalmar, en institution i frisbeesverige, gav spelarna chansen att mäta sina krafter mot varandra i grenarna DDC, SCF och Discgolf i avslutningen av tävlingssäsongen 2009 i allroundgrenarna.

Kalmar bjöd på mulet, blåsigt men helt torrt väder när årets ”season stopper” HÖSTKASTET skulle genomföras. Åtta par gav sig i DDC in i kampen med motståndare och vind. Redan i tredje omgången kom första genombrottet när 6:e-rankade J.Olsson/F.Gustavsson från Värnamo FC besegrade de 4:e-rankade T.Jonasson/M.Zewgren.

The DDC is experiencing an extremely high volume of print activity. Be patient with the student assistants working behind the counter. They must carefully sort through every print job to insure accuracy. The process can be time consuming. Often a small, single page job will be interposed between large printouts.

Remember that the DDC is a public area with little expectation of privacy. Send confidential print jobs to the printers on the 3rd or 4th floor of the library and retrieve them immediately. Resume paper cannot be added to the printers in the DDC as printouts are randomly queued between two large printers with six paper trays between them. The 3rd and 4th floor printers have a single removable tray that can accommodate special bond paper.
