So this is Christmas *jinga jinga jing* and what have we done, another year over *dadadada* and a new one just begun…

Well, not technically. While Christmas is indeed as good as upon us, there’s still a big week to fill between the festive season and New Year where anything can happen. Of that, there’s no question.

So I won’t start on the year run down just yet (although no doubt that will be coming soon… Sorry), but safe to say – as decades go, this one ‘aint been not bad’. I kicked off the year 2000 after a sleepless night of reckless abandon (no doubt ending the night rocking out to the chronically overplayed Killing in the Name Of – how things change), and meandering my hungover way to my job in the kitchen of an old folks home. I won’t lie – being greeted by a calamitously fat chef (with party hat) brandishing two dead-eyed fish for chopping at 8.30AM was a hideous beginning to the noughties and well, I promptly vomited.

However, since then I’ve grown a beard, got through university, been played on Headbangers Ball and begun this incessantly life-affirming labour of love indie label with good pal Kev – which as things go, works pretty well for me. And you can rest assured that this year, if all goes to plan, there will be no dead fish in sight come New Years day morning… In fact, I won’t even see New Years Day morning at all. Win!

So what’s the point in this meandering message? Well… (and I know it’s an overused sentiment – but I truly mean it), it’s really just to thank you all from the very bottom of my heart for being involved with all things Alcopop… Supporting, digging and getting involved with all the things we do… We really do owe our continued presence on this earth to all of you who have come to a show, read the blog, covered our releases and (perhaps most importantly of all) the magnificent poppers who have purchased our offerings.

So thanks once again for sticking with us, and keep an eye (or two) out for a big 2010… Our first new signing of the year is being announced at one minute past midnight on New Years Day (although a number of you may have already heard them… shhhh), and I promise you.. .They’re setting the tone for what is gonna be a damn fine year!

So make sure you clean your teeth heartily in the next week all – because 2010 is going to be internationally known as the year of the Alcopop!

These intricate and delicate  structures are vertebrae from a fish. They seem both complex and beautiful. They are an example of the interesting and amazing things you can find washed up on strandlines if you only take a closer look. These backbones were still articulated and joined to the head (illustrated in the picture below). I am not certain, yet, what type of fish this is but I am going to find out when I can access the right literature; both the bones and the scales can provide clues for identification.

It would have been very easy to overlook these fishy remains on the beach. An entire mono-filament nylon fishing net, complete with the catch of fish, was washed ashore and mostly buried in the sand. Only a small portion of the net was visible above the surface. On close inspection, dead fish heads and bones were entangled in the mesh and protruding from the sand – as you can see in the photographs below. Some of the skin and scales remained but the meat had been removed. In the sand around the nets and bones are small holes where small seashore creatures, like the sandhopper amphipods, have burrowed into the sediments and feasted on the fish.

Do ponto de vista jornalístico, o rock deveria produzir mais caras legais como Sergie Loobkoff — o mesmo vale pela visão de um fã de “boa música”. Entrevistar o guitarrista do Samiam pela segunda vez – sete anos após a primeira conversa — confirma a afirmação!

De malas prontas para o segundo giro pelo Brasil, os californianos a princípio fariam apenas um show em São Paulo (no dia 06/12, no Hangar 110), mas Mr. Loobkoff revela que São José dos Campos e Rio de Janeiro também terão a oportunidade de vê-los ao vivo — por enquanto no MySpace deles só consta a do Rio, dia 10/12!

Confira a conversa exclusiva que tivemos com Sergie, nela ele conta das lembranças da tour brasileira de 2002, de seu trabalho como designer gráfico, literatura, Obama, as maiores farsas da música atual, e, claro, as expectativas para os shows por aqui!

Queria começar falando da turnê que vocês fizeram por aqui em 2002, mas é impossível não lembrar de uma coisa em particular. Eu te entrevistei por e-mail antes de virem pra cá e na época eu escrevia para um jornal grande daqui… Enfim, quando vi o texto publicado tomei um susto, o editor não pensou duas vezes e o título da matéria foi: “Californianos trazem emocore ao Brasil”…
[Risos] Isso provavelmente foi na época em que a palavra “emocore” era bastante popular e quem sabe seu editor achou que as pessoas teriam mais interesse em ler a matéria. É, a gente não grita e não faz peripécias com as guitarras jogando elas para o alto ou usa maquiagem… então espero que não tenhamos decepcionado ninguém.

Então, como você definiria o som do Samiam para uma pessoa que nunca o ouviu antes?
Essa pergunta é bastante comum quando dou entrevistas. Na verdade, eu nunca falo para as pessoas que conheço ou com quem trabalho que já tive uma banda. E se eles descobrem e perguntam, geralmente respondo “rock… mais ou menos como Foo Fighters ou Green Day”. Eu imagino que se elas nunca ouviram falar do Samiam, então elas não têm interesse ou não sabem muito sobre punk rock. Foo Fighters e Green Day são os pontos de referência mais próximos para elas. Se eu dissesse “nossa banda é mais ou menos como Lemonheads com Bad Brains ou Descendents”, elas diriam “nunca ouvi falar dessas bandas” [risos].
Na verdade eu detesto quando amigos me apresentam para as pessoas dizendo que eu fazia parte de uma banda… para mim é embaraçoso. Geralmente a pessoa pergunta “qual é o nome da sua banda? Ah, nunca ouvi falar…” [risos].

Voltando à tour de 2002, quais são suas lembranças dela?
Nos divertimos tanto… aquela turnê nos levou a vários lugares do Brasil e vimos muitas coisas e conhecemos tanta gente. No meio da turnê eu fiquei muito doente, não comi ou dormi por três dias. Foi horrível. Quando melhorei eu senti como se o peso do mundo tivesse sido tirado das minhas costas, porque ficar assim tão doente em turnê é difícil demais. Eu dormia no chão do ônibus, nos pés de todo mundo, suando como um louco e ao mesmo tempo congelando. E aí eu precisava tocar quando mal conseguia parar em pé. Mas a melhor coisa foi conhecer muitas pessoas legais. Estamos muito ansiosos para ver muitas delas novamente. Bem, com sorte, se elas ainda se interessam e vêm aos shows. Quando você faz parte de uma banda há tanto tempo, é engraçado como as pessoas param de vir aos shows… Elas podem vir aos shows ano após ano, mas em determinado momento elas se casam ou arranjam um bom emprego, e aí perdem o interesse nessa bobagem de punk rock [risos].

Da outra vez vocês vieram para cerca de 10 shows e desta vez teremos uma única apresentação. Por que isso? As pessoas de fora de São Paulo tão achando que o Samiam não gostou delas… Ok, tô brincando!
Originalmente seria apenas São Paulo, mas agora vamos tocar em São José dos Campos e no Rio também. Eu não sei qual a explicação para menos shows, talvez porque vamos tocar no Chile e Argentina dessa vez, então foi uma questão de tempo e também dos compromissos dos membros da banda. Eu adoraria voltar a todas cidades… a decisão não foi da banda. Em São José dos Campos vamos tocar com o Dead Fish, estou muito ansioso para vê-los, vai ser muito legal! Eu gostaria que pudéssemos tocar em Santos com o Garage Fuzz de novo, é uma pena!

O Samiam e o Jawbreaker foram citados no romance Eeeee Eee Eeee (2007), de Tao Lin. Em tempos de crise fonográfica e artistas/músicas tão ruins, acha que foi uma forma de valorização do trabalho de vocês?
Eu nunca conheci Tao Lin pessoalmente, mas trocamos e-mails porque ele queria permissão para publicar algumas de nossas letras. Parece ser um cara legal. É um bom escritor também. Acho que ele é simplesmente uma pessoa que gosta de nossas bandas, então é sempre legal saber de alguém que aprecia o que fazemos. Eu não sei quanto a “valorizar nosso trabalho”, isso soa como se nós nos levássemos muito a sério. O Samiam não é um “trabalho” e nós definitivamente sabemos que há um milhão de bandas por aí, não somos nada de muito especial. Mas é legal. O Jawbreaker é mencionado em um livro de um escritor famoso chamado Dennis Cooper, da década de 90… Eu fiquei extremamente impressionado com aquilo quando o li. Na verdade fiquei chocado e surpreso. O livro era muito estranho, mais ou menos como uma história de amor através dos olhos de um pedófilo… Um homem mais velho e um garoto adolescente… [risos] definitivamente algo que a maioria das pessoas não conseguiria suportar. Era muito estranho… Pensando nisso agora, não faço ideia de por que comecei a lê-lo. Deve ter sido porque alguém me recomendou!

Aproveitando, o Samiam tem cerca de duas décadas e “somente” sete discos, sendo o mais recente de 2006. É impressão minha ou vocês gravam pouco? Já existem planos para um novo álbum?
Pra dizer a verdade, lançamos seis discos em 11 anos, de 1989 a 2000. Não é nada mau. E aí, basicamente, a banda acabou… ou parou de fazer turnês ou gravar seriamente. Nos últimos nove anos fizemos uma turnê ou outra por ano, mas não trabalhamos a banda como nos anos 90. Em 2006, tentamos fazer um sétimo disco, mas foi um fiasco total, alguns de nós brigávamos muito e acabamos fazendo um disco abaixo dos padrões, que me decepcionou muito. As músicas são muito boas, mas o som é horrível. Basicamente há uma divisão na banda, onde uma pessoa quer que o Samiam se torne algo totalmente diferente, mais thrash e com o som fodido, e eu quero que o Samiam soe como Samiam. Para mim, nossas gravações devem ser bastante nítidas, claras e poderosas. Isso era basicamente o motivo das brigas.
Recentemente falamos sobre fazer um disco novo… e eu escrevi e gravei (de forma caseira) nove faixas que acho que seriam ótimas canções do Samiam… mas realmente precisamos dar um jeito na tensão dentro da banda com relação às nossas intenções antes de nos comprometermos a fazer um disco novo. Fazer outro álbum de que eu não tivesse orgulho é algo que partiria meu coração. Ainda assim acho que poderíamos realmente nos redimir com um disco novo “quebrando tudo” em 2010. Vamos ter que esperar para ver!

Quais seriam seus três discos prediletos atualmente?
Isso muda sempre, mas nesse momento eu diria que amo o Where You Been, do Dinosaur Jr., How It Works, do Bodyjar e o álbum branco dos Beatles.

E as três maiores farsas da música mundial de hoje?
Eu não presto muita atenção no cenário musical, mas sempre há os grandes pop stars que são bobos e fazem algo que atraia as massas para ganharem dinheiro sem nenhuma consideração pela arte ou talento. É simplesmente assim que funciona. Uma coisa que tento nunca fazer é escolher determinadas bandas ou artistas e dizer que são horríveis. Claro, eu não gosto de Jonas Brothers ou do Kanye West, mas eles são importantes para muitas pessoas… Então quem sou eu para dizer qualquer coisa negativa sobre eles?! Eu só penso [risos]. Claro, eu acabo de escolher os Jonas Brothers e o Kanye West, então estou sendo um hipócrita… que se foda: eu os odeio! [risos].

Você é designer gráfico, ainda tem feito trabalhos para bandas?
Sim, mas há 10 anos eu fazia umas duas capas de disco por mês, e agora, com a indústria fonográfica na merda, faço uma a cada dois meses. É bastante triste, mas não há dinheiro na música, então não há trabalho. A maioria das bandas tem um amigo que cuida disso para eles de graça. Recentemente fiz a arte do último Strung Out [Agents of the Underground, Fat Wreck Chords, 2009] e estou trabalhando com algo para o Piebald… E fiz uma caixa para o aniversário de 15 anos da Hopeless Records, mas é isso, agora a maior parte da minha clientela não faz parte da indústria fonográfica.

Aliás, ainda sobre esse assunto, fiquei sabendo que recentemente rolaram uns “art shows” e, inclusive, com a participação de nomes como H.R. (Bad Brains), Walter Schreifels (Gorilla Biscuits, Rival Schools), Jonah Matranga (Far, Gratitude), Steve Soto (Agent Orange, Adolescents) e Jeff Pezzati (Naked Raygun, Big Black). Como eram esses eventos e como foi reunir esse time de peso?
Isso foi no final de semana passado e foi muito divertido. Mas eu era apenas um dos artistas, não organizei nada… um cara chamado Joe Nelson [The Killing Flame, ex-Ignite] organizou tudo, trouxe os artistas até Los Angeles. Foi um evento beneficente para duas organizações de caridade, então foi muito legal. O H.R. foi muito interessante, ele é um velho estranho hoje. Parece ser legal e tranquilo, mas meio louco. O Walter foi incrível, ele tem tanta personalidade no palco… Eu não sou gay… mas aquele cara é muito charmoso! É melhor você não levar sua namorada ao show dele [risos]. Pezzati e Soto foram muito legais também. Foi muito legal… e eu vendi três peças também!

Como designer gráfico, como você vê a expansão que essa área teve? Concorda que, por exemplo, anos atrás ninguém diria que a street art e o graffiti se tornariam tão populares. Nem mesmo que a imagem mais forte usada por um candidato à presidência nos EUA seria assinada por um “artista que veio das ruas” – no caso, Shepard Fairey.
Eu não sou mesmo o tipo de artista que Shepard Fairey, então eu não quero parecer um cara metido. Mas falando como um fã de arte, eu acho legal que essa cena exista, que você possa ir a uma exposição onde Barry McGee ou Shepard estão expondo e há centenas de pessoas e muito entusiasmo. E é muito legal que caras como o Farofa, do Garage Fuzz, possam ser convidados para mostrarem sua arte em outros países. É maravilhoso. Mesmo se ele tenha vindo à Los Angeles no ano passado e não tenha entrado em contato comigo… eu só fiquei sabendo depois. Filho da puta! [risos]. E quanto à arte do Obama, Shepard é um grande artista. Antes disso ele fez capas para o Led Zeppelin e para o Smashing Pumpkins e outras coisas enormes, não é como se ele tivesse sido “descoberto” com o lance do Obama… Bem, eu acho que então para o público mainstream, talvez, então eu não fiquei exatamente surpreso. Eu acho que ele arranjou alguns problemas por ter usado uma foto sem autorização para aquele poster… que merda.

Pra finalizar, obrigado pela entrevista, quais são as expectativas para o show no Brasil. Algum recado aos brasileiros?
Minha única expectativa é me divertir. Não há rios de dinheiro e não estamos divulgando um disco ou coisa do tipo. Eu espero poder compartilhar algumas músicas com um público entusiasmado! Encontrar alguns velhos amigos e fazer novos. É sempre divertido estar em uma cidade legal tão longe de casa… São Paulo ou Rio ou São José, é legal. Estou sempre em Los Angeles, pode se tornar algo repetitivo [risos]. Espero que alguns de seus leitores brasileiros que leiam essa entrevista decidam ir até o show, vai saber quando ou se vamos voltar um dia! Obrigado!

SO obviously its Turkey Day and I am sitting here being completely lazy and cruising funny sites just for the complete mindless retardation of it all. Fall down faint right now from ADHD overload

A bastante tempo não se via tantas bandas surgindo e seus mais variados estilos aparecendo, mas talvez por culpa de quem organiza as chamadas “cenas”, vem tudo sendo reduzido a quem é emo e quem é indie, e não se sabe mais onde acaba o rock e começa o funk, mas o post de hoje não é para discutir essas polêmicas e sim para olhar mais de perto os primeiros passos pra se tornar um profissional da música.

A euforia de se tornar um rock star sempre acaba atropelando alguns passos importantes. Todos já querem ir direto para a parte legal da coisa, o palco e a loucura depois do show, e acabam assim caindo nas armadilhas do que se vê muito hoje, bandas pagando para tocar quando em qualquer profissão o normal é que aconteça o contrário.

Um esquema vem se tornando quase obrigatório pra quem começa, que funciona mais ou menos assim,  venda 30 ingressos a valores que você normalmente paga para ver uma banda já famosa, ou seja, missão quase impossível para um iniciante, que ainda cobre o prejuízo do organizador e se tiver sorte toca pra alguém que ficou lá depois de 10 bandas já tocarem.

Mas vamos voltar ao objetivo inicial, a parte mais legal lembra? Pra uma banda iniciante tanto faz tocar em um boteco na esquina ou no Credicard Hall a sensação vem primeiro, e ai está o segredo. Tente pesar dessa maneira, das 15 bandas que vão tocar nesses festival se todas venderem 30 ingresso a uns R$15,00 quanto vai dar de dinheiro no final. Agora experimente chegar pro seu Manuel que tem um bar do lado do estúdio onde ensaia e adora você e seus amigos porque nenhum pinguço do boteco dele bebe tanto quanto você e faça a proposta de levar mais 50 pessoas no mínimo, iguais a sua galera pro bar dele, a uma módica quantia de R$5,00 que seja, junte daquelas 15 bandas umas 4 que realmente você conhece e faça as contas do aluguel do equipamento que nem precisa ser nada pra por o bairro abaixo. Posso te garantir que vão ser bem mais divertido e alguns shows desses e o seu mês de estúdio pelo menos vai estar pago.

Independente de como era e como é hoje, posso falar por experiência própria, e olha que não sou nenhum rock star, é bem mais divertido assim, e mesmo que não seja a fórmula mágica pra viver de rock pra quem já está perdendo não custa tentar.

In the summer, the city smells like dead fish, even more so now than before. The trees, especially the hirsute ones uptown, are to blame. It gets colder—just like it always did—in the fall, except now when the trees shed leaves, they develop a fine coating of hair. In the spring, the thin strands molt off the branches and trunks and the street cleaners sweep the streets like a barbershop floor. By June, there are a few stray hairs left in the city. Most of them end up in the Hudson where the scaly fish choke on them and drift under the West Side Highway. The hookers have since vacated Tenth Avenue.

Quando eu estou com saudades de Vitória, a trilha sonora do saudosismo não poderia ser outra: Dead Fish. Acho que é aquela coisa “nós somos o Dead Fish de Vitória, Espírito Santo” falada em todo show que me vem a cabeça.  É ai que eu percebo como os meus 15/16 anos foram importantes.

As I walked into my classroom this morning and discovered one of the fish we had bought only yesterday on our class field trip to Petco face down in the bottom of the tank, I thought to myself  ”Ah, so its going to be one of those kinds of days isn’t it?”

So, a little background about me. I’m a 24 year old kindergarten teacher in New Orleans. I’ve wanted to be a teacher since my first day of kindergarten so I’m finally living out my dream. I live uptown with my 2 sweet kitties Mia & Zoe.

So anyway, back to the dead fish. I was right to be wary of that fish. The day was pretty much downhill from there. I could go into detail of all the little annoyances but I have to say the worst was the subsititute who was in for my co-teacher today. The woman would not shut up! She was glued to me all day, interrupting me while I was teaching to ask questions, telling me pointless stories and reading things on my classroom walls aloud to me.

No, I don’t need to know about how many closets your house has and how much and what type of clothing they contain. I do not need to know how much weight you have lost in the last few months. I do not care about what kinds of appointments you have after school nor do I need you to follow me as I walk around the playground for recess duty. Yes I do know that the alphabet letters on my classroom walls are covered in things that start with that letter – I put them up there myself I do no need all 26 letter’s contents read aloud to me. Thank you very much.

I swear, if another fish dies, I’m calling in sick.

Hun har ikke en sjanse. USAs neste president er sannsynligvis født på 70-tallet og snakker spansk.

25.juli hadde Sarah Palin sin siste dag på jobben som guvernør i Alaska. Det betyr imidlertid ikke at vi blir kvitt henne, til det var påskuddet for å gi seg litt for skurrete (“Only dead fish go with the flow”, “I’m passing the ball”). Snarere kan det virke som Palin posisjonerer seg for sitt neste slag. Som hun hintet om da hun siterte general Douglas MacArthur (“We are not retreating; we are advancing in another direction”): Hun vil prøve å bli president i 2012. Skrekk og gru?

I et land hvor 67 prosent av befolkningen stadig synes konservativ har en fin klang (Gallup 15.juni), skulle hun tradisjonelt sett ha en god sjanse. 83 prosent av republikanerne sier at de “deler hennes verdier” i følge en måling gjort av Washington Post i juli. Ta med at ingen demokratisk president – med unntak av Clinton – har blitt gjenvalgt siden Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1933-1946). Ja, det kan se ut som en good shoot. Likevel, ta det helt med ro, Europa. Palin kan aldri bli president. Til det er hun for hvit.

Vi kjenner igjen bildet fra her hjemme: Ettersom de stadig har funnet seg tilsidesatt og marginalisert, har den hvite arbeiderklassen kompensert med en voldsom innoverrettet solidaritet – en solidaritet ikke definert av økonomiske skillelinjer; men av kulturelle og geografiske markører ispedd en nostalgi for “gode, gamle dager”.

Hua Hsu skriver i artikkelen “The End of White America” i The Atlantic at resultatet er en skyggebevegelse og en stolthet that dares not speak its name. En gruppetilhørighet som defineres ved å hinte til rase: Enten det skjer ved samle seg om countrymusikk, Nascar (USAs raskest voksende sport), eller ved å – slik Sarah Palin gjorde under valgkampen – differensiere mellom det liberale kyst-Amerika og “the pro-America areas of this great nation”.

Å hinte om hvithet fungerer kanskje fint som gruppekommunikasjon, som valgkampstrategi er den imidlertid dømt til å mislykkes. For å bli president må du spille på lag med demografien og Palins “virkelige Amerika” krymper for hver dag.

En demografisk basert spådom vil heller si at den neste presidenten (etter åtte år med Obama) er født på 70-tallet og interracial av herkomst. I følge en rapport fra august 2008, utarbeidet av U.S. Census Bureau, vil gruppene som for øyeblikket er kategorisert som minoriteter – svarte, hispanics, øst-asiatere og sør-asiatere – utgjøre majoriteten av den amerikanske befolkningen innen 2042. Hvis vi bare forholder oss til de under 18 år, vil the tipping point komme allerede i 2023. Med andre ord: Alle barn som fødes fra nå av tilhører USAs første post-hvite generasjon. Det hvite hegemoni er definitivt over. Det var en stund hvite sørstatsmenn hadde klippekort på presidentembetet. Nå spørs det om de i det hele tatt kan bli det igjen.

San Francisco, der undertegnede bodde inntil nylig, regnes i dag som 58 % hvitt. En tur til byens mest vitale distrikt, Mission, bekrefter at flertallet står for fall; butikkskiltene er skrevet på spansk og praten ved kassa foregår på spansk. 35 millioner amerikanere har pr. i dag spansk som førstespråk. (Engelsk sin posisjon er likevel ikke truet mener lingvisten Geoffrey Pullum: “Å gjøre engelsk til offisielt språk er like maktpåliggende som å gjøre pølser til offisiell baseball-mat”). Spådom #2: USAs neste president mestrer spansk.

Det er riktignok mange usikre faktorer, blant annet vet man ikke hvordan folk gifter seg lenger, noe som peker mot det forfatteren Michael Lind i boka The Next American Nation kaller “the beiging of America”. Det er mulig mange “beige” amerikanere vil identifisere seg som hvite, noe som vil utsette the tipping point, men selv da vil det antagelig dreie seg om, skriver Lind: “en identitet adaptert ut fra bekvemmelighet eller likegyldighet, ikke av nødvendighet”. Den nye amerikaneren vil med andre ord ikke være spesielt opptatt av hvitheten sin. Palins hintestrategi vil derfor ikke ha noe for seg. Den favner for smalt.

Republikaner og tidligere taleskriver for George W. Bush, David Frum, ser derfor med gru på en eventuell Palin-nominasjon i 2012. Han hevder det vil være det mest dødfødte prosjektet siden Barry Goldwater – “Mr. Conservative” – stilte til valg i 1964. Han tapte så det sang mot Lyndon B. Johnson – ingen spesielt god kandidat det heller.

På den annen side, om ikke annet kan et nytt nederlag sørge for at republikanerne får palinismen ut av systemet en gang for alle, tenker Frum. Slik at de kan starte gjenopprettelsesarbeidet som tvang seg fram hos deres konservative brødre i Storbritannia. Som Frum skriver i en kommentar i The National Post: “Om Palin stiller kan det om ikke annet teach us a lesson“.

Álbum: Como Fazer Inimigos… — FISTT
Em seu tão aguardado segundo álbum, o genial Bloco do Eu Sozinho, os cariocas do Los Hermanos decretaram que “todo carnaval tem seu fim”. E não é que a maior manifestação cultural (?) do povo brasileiro veio influenciar no quinto disco do FISTT?!

Não, não pense que F. Nick (voz e baixo), Mirtão (guitarra e voz), Crildo (guitarra) — atualizando: agora substituído por Karacol, ex-Sugar Kane — e Birão (bateria) chegam tocando pandeiro, cuíca e cavaquinho, o som continua com aquela mistura de pop punk com hardcore melódico que os mantém na estrada há 14 anos.

A divisão AC/DC (Antes do Carnaval/Depois do Carnaval) de Como Fazer Inimigos… pode ser feita porque a faixa Carnaval é, na verdade, subdividida em sete. Continuar tem cara de single pra tocar nas rádios (e se tocasse, estouraria!), ela precede e avisa que a epopéia conceitual do FISTT começa ali.

Assim, entram na sequência — separadas, mas juntas, se é que vocês me entendem –, Quando o Carnaval acabar… (e suas indagações), Fábulas de Bilé (reggaezinho ao melhor estilo NOFX), Correndo (e seu desabafo), Zero à Esquerda (ótima instrumental e com a participação do ex-membro Fabrício Martinelli, que depois foi pro Street Bulldogs e atualmente está no Hateen — atualizando: o guitarrista acaba de deixar o grupo), Superficial (com a presença de Rodrigo Lima, do Dead Fish), Muy Amigón (mais uma vez entra o jeitão/deboche NOFX de ser, com direito a portunhol tosco e o trumpete mariachi de Naor Gomes) e Desintegrar (minha predileta, com riff e vocal quase metaleiros). Outra que também me chamou a atenção foi Tanto Faz, com uma levadinha bem interessante, backings marcantes e um refrão convidativo.

O quarteto de Jundiaí (SP) gravou tudo na capital paulista no renomado Midas Studios, com os não menos tarimbados Paulo Anhaia (gravação, produção, mixagem) e Rodrigo Castanho (masterização). Essa turma, reconhecida em trabalhos de nomes como CPM 22, NX Zero, Charlie Brown Jr. etc, soube deixar os “meninos do interior” à vontade e o resultado são canções redondinhas, como Aquecendo (com clipe rolando no MTV Overdrive), Fevereiro, Todo Amor Morre Abandonado e Redentor.

Ah sim, as letras irônicas não foram embora: Pobre F. Nick, Meu Amigo Copo, Sad Rockstar, Mallory e Carta Para Garotinha Ruiva (mais pelo título que remete ao Snoopy). Essa é a Última Vez e Eu Não Faço Ninguém Feliz são as com o pé no acelerador, prontas para formarem as rodas nos shows.

If You Are Known by the Company You Keep, What do Obama’s Associates Say About Him?

In the Aesop’s Fable, The Ass and His Purchaser, a man looking to buy a donkey wanted to test the animal before completing the purchase. So he put the donkey in his field with the other donkeys to see what would happen.

The donkey immediately strayed from the majority of the herd and cozied up to the laziest donkey of all.

Seeing that, the man led the donkey back to his owner. When the owner asked how he could judge the donkey’s character so quickly the man explained, “I didn’t even need to see how he worked. I knew he would be just like the one he chose to be his friend.”

A person is known by the company he keeps.

Fables are popular because they tell the story of the way things in life really work. In business, when someone takes over a department or company, that person promotes those he or she likes to positions of authority. The new manager seeks out those who have a philosophy, work ethic and disposition similar to his.

One would expect a president to do the same thing. After all, a president is elected—supposedly—based on the vision, ideas and proposals he championed during the campaign. It would then make sense that he would put in place those who supported his vision and would therefore be enthusiastic in working to achieve it.

So who are President Barack Obama’s friends, and who has he put in charge of the effort to enact his policies? And what do the friends he has chosen and the people he has put in position of authority in his administration say about him?

Following, in alphabetical order, is a list of some of Obama’s friends, advisors and people charged with enacting his policies:

• William Ayers—Now a professor of education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Ayers spent 10 years as a fugitive in the 1970s when he was part of the domestic terrorist organization known as the Weather Underground. In the early 1970s the Weather Underground was responsible for bombing the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C., and setting a bomb that didn’t go off at a military induction center in Oakland, Calif. The group also murdered two policemen and a Brink’s truck driver in a botched armored car robbery, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) website. Ayers surrendered to face charges in the 1980s, but the charges were dropped because of improper surveillance. Coincidentally, on Sept. 11, 2001, Ayers was being interviewed about a book he had written and he told the interviewer he didn’t think the Weather Underground had done enough. Ayers and Obama first crossed paths in Chicago in the 1990s and served together on the board of the not-for-profit Chicago Annenberg Challenge, a boondoggle to spend tens of millions of dollars for their pet “education” projects. Obama downplayed his friendship with Ayers as casual, but evidence indicates their relationship was much more. Many now believe that Ayers penned Obama’s “autobiography” Dreams from My Father.

• Carol Browner—Obama’s Director of the White House Office of Energy and Climate Change Policy, Browner is an avowed socialist. She served as one of 14 leaders of Socialist International’s Commission for a Sustainable World Society, which calls for global governance and says rich countries must shrink their economies to address climate change, according to an article in The Washington Times. The group supports socialism and has been harshly critical of U.S. policies. She is also a supporter of smart growth policies, as we have described previously. Browner also served on the board of Al Gore’s Alliance for Climate Protection, though her name was scrubbed from the site after Obama tapped her for the director’s position. Not surprisingly, Obama’s transition team told The Times Browner’s membership in a socialist organization was not a problem.

• Frank Marshall Davis—You won’t find Davis’ name on an organizational chart of White House staff, but he was instrumental in forming the political philosophy of Barack Hussein Obama. Called “Uncle Frank” in Dreams from My Father, Davis was a member of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA), according to a 1951 report of the Commission on Subversive Activities to the Legislature of the Territory of Hawaii. Obama has admitted to spending time with Uncle Frank—who he cryptically describes as being a person of some modest notoriety at one time—and listening to his poetry and getting career path advice. Davis may also have been a pedophile. Writing under the pseudonym Bob Greene, Davis wrote a debased pornographic novel entitled, Sex Rebel: Black (Memiors of a Gash Gourmet), in which he describes group sex encounters and sex he and his wife had with a 13-year-old girl named Anne. Davis died in 1987.

• Anita Dunn—As White House Communications advisor, Dunn has been seen a lot lately as the face of the Obama administration’s strategy to try and discredit Fox News. She is described on Politico.com as a veteran Democratic strategist and top advisor on Obama’s presidential campaign. As the war between the Obama White House (see more under Rham Emmanual) and Fox has escalated, videotape has surfaced showing Dunn gloating over how the campaign “controlled” the media. Another videotape surfaced showing Dunn speaking at a June high school graduation ceremony where she praised Marxist/Communist Chinese Premiere Mao Zedong as one of her favorite philosophers and one of the two people she turns to most. It’s difficult to understand how Mao had time to philosophize as he was busy killing somewhere between 50 million and 70 million of his country’s citizens during his 27-year reign of terror.

• Ezekiel Emanuel—The president’s Special Advisor for Health Policy, Ezekiel is brother to White House Chief of Staff Rham Emanuel. Ezekiel is the source of Sarah Palin’s death panel idea. This Emanuel has written that he believes many healthcare treatments should be denied to those under 15 and over 65 to save money, the rationale being that only people between 15 and 65 are beneficial to society.

• Rahm Emanuel—Obama’s White House Chief of Staff, Emanuel is a thug Chicago politician who once sent a two-and-a-half foot long, dead and decomposing fish to lobbyist Allen Secrest to express his displeasure. He’s known for his full-time use of gutter language and once told then-British Prime Minister Tony Blair just before an appearance with Bill Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky scandal: “This is important. Don’t f**k it up.” He also coined the phrase, “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste.” He’s also behind the ridiculous policy of starting a fight with television news agency Fox News.

• Chai Feldblum—Nominated by the president to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Feldblum signed a radical 2006 manifesto which endorsed polygamous households and argued traditional marriage should not be privileged “above all others,” according to a report in Catholic News Agency. According to a statement from the White House, Feldblum has worked on advancing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights…” She is co-director of Workplace Flexibility 2010, which she described at a UCLA symposium as a homosexual rights group that aimed to change the American workplace and revolutionize social mores, according to a report on the WorldnetDaily website.

• Patrick Gaspard—White House Political Director, Gaspard was formerly a lobbyist for Service Employees International Union (SEIU), the organization that sent its thugs out to disrupt Tea Party protests and stir up trouble at town hall meetings in August. Prior to that, Gaspard worked as national field director for American Coming Together (ACT), a sub-group of the Association for Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN). ACT was fined $775,000 in civil penalties by the federal government for various voter fraud offenses. You can read more about ACORN here.

• Eric Holder—The Attorney General of the United States is an anti-gun racist who earlier this year referred to the United States as “a nation of cowards” on race relations. He also has an interesting take on justice. He worked to convince President Clinton to pardon billionaire fugitive Mark Rich (convicted of fraud and racketeering), Weather Underground (where have we heard of that organization before?) terrorists Susan Rosenberg and Linda Evans, and he declined to prosecute New Black Panther brutes who stood over a Pennsylvania polling station with baseball bats intimidating voters. Oh yes, he also wants to bring Guantanamo Bay prisoners to the United States.

• John Holdren—Obama’s Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy is not only an abortion supporter, he is an abortion nut who believes that compulsory abortions could be sustained under the existing U.S. Constitution if a population crisis arose. He also supports mass sterilization of the U.S. population through lacing the country’s water supply with drugs. Holdren authored with two other people a book called Ecoscience promoting their loony ideas about population control and One World Government—or what they called a Planetary Regime—to regulate international trade, the food supply and determine the optimum population for the world.

• Valerie Jarrett—The New York Times called Jarrett, Obama Senior Advisor and Assistant to the President for Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs, the ultimate Obama insider. She has also been called the other half of Obama’s brain. She’s another one of those Chicago thug politicians who has gamed the system—including operating as a slum lord—for her own benefit. Her company, Habitat, Inc., managed the Grove Parc housing complex which was located in the district represented by State Senator Obama. As state senator, Obama coauthored a bill to give tax credits for developers which Jarrett used on the complex. As U.S. senator, Obama pressed for increased federal subsidies for like projects. Despite receiving government funds and tax credits, Grove Parc was ordered demolished because of its deplorable condition. She also served the administrations of Chicago mayors Harold Washington and Richard Daly, both scandal-plagued. Washington, by the way, was backed in his bid for mayor by Chicago’s Communist Party and the local branch of the Democratic Socialists of America. Called by the Washington Post a tutor to Obama and his wife Michelle, Jarrett is the step-daughter of Chicago journalist Vernon Jarrett. Vernon Jarrett was an associate of Frank Marshal Davis, Obama’s mentor, when Davis lived in Chicago prior to moving to Hawaii.

• Kevin Jennings—This former school teacher and long-time gay rights activist was named Obama’s Safe Schools Czar. He has accused Baptists, the Boy Scouts and sports fans of anti-gay bias, and advocates a special high school for gay teens and gay-straight alliance clubs for every high school in America, according to a report in CNSNews.com. He believes that kindergartners should be taught to respect all sexual orientations while insisting that “ex-gay messages” and “Christian values” are misused to isolate or denigrate lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and have no place in the nation’s public schools, CNSNews.com reported. Oh yeah, he also supports pedophilia. While Jennings was a teacher, a minor student told Jennings that he was having gay sex with an adult. Jennings covered it up. He also has praised Harry Hay, a defender of the North American Man-Boy Love Association (NAMBLA), which promotes legalization of sexual abuse of young boys by older men.

• Van Jones—Once Obama’s White House Environmental Advisor, Jones was fired in the dead of night on a holiday weekend after a video surfaced in which he called Republicans a bodily orifice, and after a controversial document he signed was revealed. That document accused former President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney of either planning or knowing about ahead of time the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. In addition to being a 9/11 Truther, Jones is an avowed Communist. He was appointed to his position by Valerie Jarrett, who has been seen on video praising Jones and saying she and Obama had been watching Jones for a long time.

• Mark Lloyd—FCC Diversity Czar, is also known as the man who wants to stifle free speech in America like Hugo Chavez does in Venezuela. He has been videotaped saying the Chavez revolution in Venezuela was almost lost because of the privately-owned media. Chavez, of course, is the Marxist dictator of Venezuela, personal friend to Communist dictator Fidel Castro of Cuba and Islamic terrorist dictator Mahmoud Ahmadenijad of Iran. In 2006, while at the liberal Center for American Progress, Lloyd wrote a book entitled, Prologue to a Farce: Communications and Democracy in America. In it he presents the idea that all private broadcasters should be charged licensing fees at a rate equal to their operating expenses and that money should go to the Public Broadcasting System (PBS). In a 2007 report entitled The Structural Imbalance of Political Talk Radio, Lloyd complains about the fact that people want to listen to Christian and conservative talk radio rather than liberal radio, and lists ways the Federal government can fix the “problem.” His solution would include caps on the number of local stations a corporation can own, ensure greater local accountability on radio licensing and require owners who fail to fulfill their obligations to pay a fee to support PBS.

• Cecelia Munoz—Now White House Director of Intergovernmental Affairs, Munoz was previously Senior Vice President of The National Council of La Raza, the largest Hispanic lobbying organization in the country, which has called national anti-immigration groups “hate groups.” La Raza, which literally translates The Race, funds extremist groups and supports illegal immigration as a way of obtaining political power. The group advocates taking the Southwest U.S. for the purpose of creating a new Hispanic state.

• Cass Sunstein—Recently confirmed by the U.S. Senate as Administrator of the White House Office of Administration and Regulatory Affairs, Sunstein is a Harvard Law School professor and dingbat who has—in writings and speeches—called for a ban on all hunting and claims that animals should be represented by lawyers in animal abuse cases. He is a socialist who has advocated for gun control and heavy regulation of the Internet. He also wrote in his 2008 book, Nudge: Improving Decisions about Health, Wealth and Happiness, that he believes people’s organs can be harvested without their consent. Sunstein would like to see personal email communications regulated by the government and believes the Internet is anti-democratic because of the way users can filter out information of their own choosing.

• Rev. Jeremiah Wright—Obama sat in Wright’s church for 20 years yet claims to have never heard any of the hate-filled racism that crossed his lips. Wright’s anti-Semitic, anti-American sermons came to light during the campaign. Among his claims: the U.S. government was responsible for infecting blacks with the virus that causes AIDS, America was responsible for the 9/11 attacks—“the chickens have come home to roost”—and Jews are responsible for ethnic cleansing in Gaza and are pressuring Obama associates to keep Wright and Obama separated.

These are just a few of the folks who have occupied or currently occupy Obama’s inner circle. He was passed off by the mainstream media as being a centrist and moderate, but many of friends are anything but that, and some are quite radical. And when you parse some of his words or find video or audio from several years ago you know that Obama himself has some radical views.

But the media ignored Obama’s ties to radicals and communists. That, and Obama’s soaring rhetoric led many otherwise thoughtful and good people down the primrose path, and they voted for him without realizing what they were getting.

But as the truth gets out about his associates, the cover is coming off. He’s becoming known by the company he keeps, as well as his own deeds.

My six year old lost his first pet today.  A fish he originally named “Repto-Slicer” but later renamed as “Chip.”  Personally, I thought Repto-Slicer was a better name, but Chip seemed to stick in his later days.  Chip died while his owner was at school today, and I buried him in the back yard.  When he got home, Chip’s owner and his little sister made a headstone and complete shrine around Chip’s grave, complete with a popsicle stick cross and some toys and leaves and a fake pumpkin because it’s almost Halloween.  The genuine sincerity and sadness of it all was very poignant.

Eu odeio pessoas que criticam quando não sabem sobre o assunto, petulância minimizada. Eu sou uma mulher e vou lá no mundo sujo beber minha bera e gritar com eles, sejam novos ou velhos no ‘bagulho‘. Se os novos ainda não tem a consciência do que estão apoiando, ao menos estão no caminho certo. E não defendo só uma cena ou uma multidão de fãs fiéis, eu respeito qualquer maneira de ver o mundo, se isso te fizer viver. Só quero que você respeite a minha opinião ok
Eu não me sinto errada em sentir esse friozinho na barriga toda vez que tenho a oportunidade de ver as minhas bandas preferidas tocar, eu me preparo toda, isso sim. Influêncio pessoas pra irem, conhecerem e tudo mais. Um monte de gente podre anda pra cima e pra baixo dizendo orgulhosas sobre si mesmas que não ‘gostam mais disso’, ou que já passaram dessa fase. Quer saber? Não me importa quantos anos passem, essa é uma coisa preciosa pra mim, é uma dádiva. Não me peça pra conviver com alguém que não saiba respeitar essa cena tanto quanto eu, que faça por ela tudo o que está ao seu alcançe, que grite aquelas letras enfurecidamente e chegue em casa sem voz… É isso que eu faço.
Aquelas garotinhas loucas pra abrir as pernas em troca de uma baqueta ou algo do gênero, cerveja quente na mão e suor; perder os tênis mosh-ando e ‘dando giros’ na galera. Não importa, esse mundo me encanta.. É mágica pura. “É um monte de adolescente burro se esbofetando” – “Isso gera violência” – Ah! Por favor né, se a gente pula e se empurra embaixo do palco é por algo maior, mas não espero que você saiba disso se nunca esteve lá.. Auto -destruição é quando você veste essas tuas roupinhas rídiculas, dropa teus doces e dança que nem um retardado a noite toda; eu não vou lá criticar você por isso, né?
A diferença disso tudo é respeito. A gente ‘berra’ as letras dos nossos ‘ídolos’ e aprende com elas, porque gritamos sobre convivência, sobre sobrevivência. É falar sobre autonomia, sociedade e até amor. É sentir na pele o arrepio por ver de perto o teu cantor favorito, porque o ‘cara é foda‘, ele sabe do que tá falando e merece todo o esforço que fazemos no meio da galera fervendo pra pegar o ‘feeling‘ do cara encima do palco.

Se eu gosto de 10 bandas nacionais só, não quer dizer que não de o valor que cada uma merece. Gosto não se discute e eu gosto mesmo é do hardcore, daquele com pegada. Poucas bandas nacionais me fazer ferver de tesão quando escuto, mas as que fazem, fazem bem. Cito nomes como Dead Fish, Garage Fuzz, Reffer, Street Bulldogs e esse último CD do Sugar Kane fez com que eles mereçam estar aqui. Quase esqueci de Ratos de Porão! Se você não gosta disso tanto quanto eu, é capaz que nunca tenha ouvido falar nesses nomes, talvez nem goste do que eles fazem… Eu posso respeitar isso. Agora, se você gostar… apoie isso, faça tudo o que você pode a favor disso. É o que vai estender a mão pra você sempre que você buscar, vai te ensinar a ser mais humano e ver o mundo de outro ângulo.
Eu gosto de bandas antigas, como Down by Law, Descendents e Boucing Souls. Gosto de gente fazendo música boa, da esperança em ser melhor e mudar o mundo. Eu gosto é desse espírito que sempre se renova, com uma letra bem escrita e um instrumental incansável. É ‘lyfestyle’, não é ter atitude em si, essa palavra acabou preenchendo lacunas que não deveria e perdeu um pouco do seu significado real, o que vale é como agir. É como você se comporta da hora que acorda até a que vai dormir, é a tua postura.
Por isso antes de atravessar a rua quando me ver toda “marginal” andando ali, cale a boca e ouça (de verdade!) aquilo que eu grito pelos corredores da minha casa. Senão vai dizer que eu visto minha calça apertada de couro e mostro as minhas tatuagens pra chamar a atenção. Se eu sou assim, é porque eu quero que você saiba com que ‘tipinho de gente‘ está lidando, alguém que não tem medo de mostrar todo o amor por esse mundo aleatório, que tem as suas falhas e nem sempre se mostra funcional, mas vai lá no fundo da minha alma e me devolve em suspiros sinceros todo o esforço )e preconceito) que tenho que superar por VIVER ASSIM. Por isso mesmo com a cara amassada e a bunda doendo das horas que fico dentro do ônibus pra chegar até lá, eu não paro de correr átras do lugar abafado e das bandas da minha playlist, porque quando eu chego lá.. Reconheço rostos, eu sinto vontade que aquilo nunca acabe, eu me sinto viva de verdade.

Generalizar é fácil demais, o difícil é encontrar algo pra substituir o rock’nroll na tua alma depois que ele é pregado lá. Quero casar, transar e morrer com ele. Não importa o que você diga, é isso que me move, que me faz acordar e correr.
Faça isso.

I’ve decided that I really love haiku updates when I fail to post every day. So, without further ado:

Tuesday: Chicago, IL, Detroit, MI & Buffalo, NY (Day 23)
Fair in the morning – -
Not too thrilling. Airport next:
Gotta run!

(Of course, my evening flight from O’Hare to Detroit was delayed – - seriously, when are they ever not late departing from the Windy City? – - which meant I then landed in Michigan about ten minutes after I was supposed to begin the boarding process for my connecting flight on to Buffalo. End result involved me in high heels and a dress lugging a twenty-something-frickin’-heavy-pound carry on bag and booking it across terminal B to the opposite end of terminal A like no other. A hilarious sight, I’m sure. I had wonderful seatmates for both flights, though, and that was definitely a spot of cheer God placed in path when I needed it… the one had a thick Nashville drawl and flies five days out of the week for his job so we were able to swap all sorts of fascinating travel stories (his tales of the midnight rail coach in Egypt took the cake, I have to say) and then the other was a wonderful soul from a town only forty miles or so from my own so we connected in our western NY bond. She was also able to educate me in the world of speed-skiing and by the time our plane touched down on the drizzly tarmac in Buffalo, I had learned all sorts of interesting tidbits, including slaluming, timers, edges, connecting with the earth and more. Best part of the day, though? The welcoming committee of three – - surprise! I was only expecting one – - who came to the airport to pick up myself, my overly hefty red suitcase and my tired heels, despite the late hour. Thank you, dear ones; irregardless of our mutual fatigue, we managed to find enough energy to talk for the next hour and a half until sleep claimed all of us and then there was much crashing).

Wednesday: Houghton, NY (24)

Make for yumminess.

(Thanks to the generosity of my dear friend A—-, I was able to not only transport my vehicle-less self back home in one piece but also had company for a delicious late afternoon feast. After spending an exorbitant time eating meals on the road by myself over the past several weeks, I’m not sure which I enjoyed more: real homemade food or meaningful conversation with someone with whom I already have a relationship. Also, Wednesday marked the first time I had been in my apartment in close to two weeks. While I didn’t bother to unpack my suitcase since I would be heading out again in less than 48 hours, I did spend a good hour or so reacquainting myself with my favorite armchair in the living room at a regrettably but o so worthwhile late hour, book in one hand and steaming apple cider in the other. O, and there was much laughter as well as some good thoughts and significant heartwarming conversation shared that evening with the five other absolutely fabulous ladies in our “Secret Group,” as one of the husband’s has dubbed our regular times of Scriptural discussion, warm food and relationship. So far, they’ve all mangaged to be extremely flexible with my odd schedule and it’s worked out to get together whenever I’m back in town, however briefly, before continuing with the out-of-state portion of fall travel).

Thursday: Houghton, NY (25)
Angus? O no! Dead!
Time for a fish eulogy
and much office work.

(Yes. It’s true. Upon my return to the office, I was greeted with the traumatic sight of my very dead fish who responded to the name of “Angus,” wedged stiff as a popsicle stick between the filter and the side of the tank. I think he starved to death, poor little guy. Thankfully, the Visit Office coordinator came to my rescue and scooped Angus’s decaying carcass out of the tank; we all, student interns included, paused in the middle of my office for some brief thoughts, and then he joined the rest of the ghostly aqua dwellers in the underlair of our piping system. Angus’ untimely aside, Thursday held close to eleven hours in the office as I attempted to get caught up on the previous weeks’ worth of emails, voicemails, post mail, scheduled appointments, receipts and the like while also repacking and reorganizing my space, my travel case and my head for the upcoming two and a half week’s worth of travel. Later that evening, however, once I managed to extricate myself from the never-ending mountain of to-do’s in the office, two of my interns and my downstairs neighbor stopped over with a heaping plate of still warm cookies and cream cheese frosting which we promptly devoured amongst much welcome story-telling… and then my summer gardening buddy showed up to keep me company in the laundromat across the darkened street while I did two loads worth of washing and drying at the 9 o’clock hour… and finally, one of my favorite adopted floorlings came knocking at my apartment door to visit for a bit close to the midnight hour since the Christmas lights wrapped around my front porch served as a beacon of welcome. Altogether, a wonderful day).

Friday: Houghton, NY, Painted Post, NY & Wilkes Barre, PA (26)
On the road again:
Rainy, mountainous stretches
And miles to go.

(Despite initial plans to leave around the healthy hour of 3 p.m., prospective students, unexpected phone calls and office meetings had other plans. I ended up rolling out of Houghton four hours later than anticipated, therefore, and drove the 235 miles to my hotel in darkness through long, rainy, foggy, mountainous stretches of highway in the vast expanses of Pennsylvania’s state gamelands. Thankfully, I had Samuel Beam keeping me company out of my speakers for much of the way and then several other dear, dear friends on the phone whose thoughtful conversation not only kept me awake but also encouraged my heart. Wonderful. Plus, the best news of all: still no deer killings to report. From this keyboard to God’s ears, right?)

Saturday: Dallas, Quakertown & Montgomeryville, PA (27)
Saturday morning
College fair is surprising – -
Not just for free drink.

(I admit, I went into this Saturday morning fair with rather low expectations. After all, what high school student in their right mind would look forward to talking to a complete stranger about the future at the early hour of 9 a.m. on a rainy, gray weekend day? However, the cheerful counteances of those central Pennsylvanians with their softened vowels and ready laughter proved me wrong, and the fair turned out to be quite the successful one. In fact, all gratitude for free, bottomless coffee notwithstanding, I enjoyed multiple prolonged and therefore enjoyable conversations with more than one family – - my favorite? A lengthy encounter with a missionary family of three boys on furlough in the States before returning to Benin whose enthusiasm for all things Tolkien rivaled that of Pollock’s for his eggbeater. Actually, the copy of Lewis’ Till We Have Faces, lying in readiance on the table if traffic past my table was lagging, consistently provoked fascinating commentary for the entirety of the morning… maybe I should bring my current reads with me to all the fairs I go to! – - just kidding, boss. Anyways, after the fair ended early Saturday afternoon, I packed up my display and headed back on the road for another hour and a half to the city outside of Allentown, PA, where I would be spending the weekend before beginning the next week’s swing of college fairs and high school fairs across New Jersey. Of course, a detour to Quakertown, PA, and the residing Borders bookstore therein was definitely in order yesterday evening… love that place x 3).

Rolou nessa quinta-feira [1º] o VMB 2009. Dessa vez a grande premiação da MTV, que contou neste ano com novas categorias musicais e tecnológicas, começou mais cedo em uma programação especial. O primeiro especial VMB foi o MTV na Rua Soundsystem, logo após ocorreu o VMB Antes com a entrega de vários prêmios das categorias essencialmente musicais. Várias surpresas e artistas já esperados ganharam prêmios em um programa com performances de MV Bill, Pata de Elefante, Fernanda Takai e ForFun, apresentando suas músicas, além da Banda dos Sonhos, que tocou músicas de Muse e Audioslave. Às 21:30, entrou no ar o VMB propriamente dito, com uma abertura muito bacana e um musical protagonizado pelo apresentador Marcelo Adnet, com todos os destaques do ano sendo lembrados. As performances de Móveis Coloniais de Acaju, Erasmo Carlos, Franz Ferdinand, Vivendo do Ócio, Pitty, Massacration e a união de Wanessa com o rapper americano Ja rule no palco destacaram uma diversidade musical. Já as várias participações de artistas como Marcelo Tas, Théo Becker, Céu, Samuel Rosa e a apresentadora Eliana ajudaram a apresentar os vencedores eleitos pelo voto popular em 2009. Primeiramente queria parabenizar os gaúcho que levaram tudo no VMB, infelizmente a minha campanha pelo Júpiter não deu certo, mas em contrapartida ótimas bandas do sul levaram prêmios, como Pata de Elefante e Pública, e outras que não me agradam tanto, mas que mesmo assim estão de parabéns, como Fresno e Chimarruts. Para ter uma idéia, das 26 categorias, 7 troféus vieram para o sul, isso quer dizer que mais de 1/4 dos prêmios da maior premiação da música brasileira acabou nas mãos de um gaúcho. Parabéns aos que fazem um trabalho de qualidade e têm o devido reconhecimento do seu público.

E em segundo lugar, fazendo uma análise dos vencedores uma coisa ficou bem clara para mim. No final o que vence não é a qualidade musical, mas também não é quem tem o maior reconhecimento de público, quem ganha o prêmio no final é quem tem o maior público adolescente que tem saco de ficar votando incessantemente no seu artista favorito. Veja aí vários exemplos disto, Fresno, Dead Fish, Forfun, NX Zero, Cine, com certeza o público que gosta destas bandas é jovem e tem saco de ficar votando mil vezes. Por que Malu Magalhães não ganhou nada? Quem gosta do som dela não é fanático, vai lá no site, vota uma vez e pronto, vai fazer outra coisa, as pessoas tem mais o que fazer. Mas para uma adolescente de 13 anos que chora em seu quarto ouvido aquela melação do Fresno votar uma vez é suficiente? Claro que não, ela é fã, ela vai passar a noite toda votando por que Fresno é a melhor banda de todas. Ta aí o resultado, um VMB mais adolescente do que nunca. Para esse público deve ter sido o máximo, mas para quem gosta de boa música foi uma decepção.

Pelo menos rolou um Franz Ferdinand pra salvar a noite.
