Dead Man (Jim Jarmusch, 1995)

Hello all.

I chose Dead Man to follow Taxi Driver (the film that got me into film) because it is most likely my favorite film. As many of you all know (at least passionate film lovers) it is just about impossible to pick a solid favorite but when people ask me, this is the answer I generally give them. It’s an outstanding film, with one of the most powerful scores I have ever heard. To try and stay consistent with the first paragraph being as personal as possible, I would like to point out that one of the major reasons this film stuck with me is that it is the film I wanted to make. To clarify, around the time when this film was recommended to me (spring of 2007) I was beginning groundwork on a short film. After watching this film, I immediately tossed out the ideas I was working on. This is due to the fact that I wanted to make a film in black and white and for it to be about a man’s journey to his death. I had never even heard of this film (which is a strange fact in its own right because I am big fan of Jarmusch) and it came up when discussing Depp’s earlier roles before becoming what he is today. Jarmusch is also the rare example of a director who has ten or more films of which I own them all, which means I will definitely pick up The Limits of Control this upcoming Tuesday despite the fact that I have not seen it yet.

Sorry to get so longwinded, now on to the film itself. The film’s highlights are the cinematography, music, and Depp’s performance. The first two are unquestionably great aspects of Dead Man whereas the last, Johnny Depp’s performance, is not so apparent. The brilliance of his performance is not on the surface of the film and definitely does not jump out at you like the way in which the film was shot and how perfectly fitting the score is. Blake does so little throughout the middle portion of the film (but at the same time does so much, hence why I think the performance is outstanding) but Depp seems to be the perfect fit for the character.

It is at least noteworthy that the first two films featured in this project deal immensely with loneliness; in fact, while discussing both Taxi Driver and Dead Man it is almost impossible not to say loneliness and its affects are the films’ central theme. I have to say I am not sure what this means, after taking a quick glance at the list of remaining films at least two more deal completely with loneliness and with the others, loneliness plays an important role. If you have not seen this film, please please please do so. This obviously holds true for every film on my list.

In Brazil family was mourning the death of Jorge Concalves at his funeral. They were shocked to death(ha!) though to see him walking to them at the cemetery. A day earlier his family had wrongly identified him as the heavily mutilated victim of a car crash. It wasn’t him though, he was boozing the whole day and night in a trucker bar with some of his buddies. When he heard about the funeral a day later he hurried to the cemetery. God, how shocked those people must have been.

I had to look at this for a second before I realized what the fail was…

Depp como William Blake

Es difícil imaginar a Johnny Depp como protagonista de un western, salvo que se trate de uno muy especial. Y especial tenía que ser la película del director de “Ghost Dog” (1999) y “Night on Earth” (1991), el singularísimo Jim Jarmusch. Esta película (Dead Man, 1995), que además tiene un reparto de lo más variado (Robert Michum, Gary Farmer, John Hurt, Gabriel Byrne, Lance Henriksen, Billy Bob Thornton, Alfred Molina, Iggy Pop y Michael Wincott), inicia con el viaje de William Blake (Depp) hacia el pueblo de Machine donde lo ha llevado una oferta de trabajo en la empresa de un tal señor Dickinson (un decrépito Mitchum). Sin embargo lo único que consigue el tímido Blake es conocer a una vendedora de flores de papel llamada Thel con quien pasa la noche. El problema es que Thel tiene un pasado con Charlie Dickinson (Byrne) que los sorprende en la cama -y en el acto trata de matar a Blake- pero solo consigue herirlo pues Thel se interpone entre ambos. Blake responde con el arma de la chica. Charlie cae muerto. Blake huye como puede. Se podría decir que este es el fin del primer viaje que la película relata. El segundo viaje comienza cuando Blake emprende la huída en compañía del indio “Nadie (Nobody)” (Farmer) que lo halla moribundo. Al saber el nombre del desgraciado que acaba de ayudar Nadie confirma que habla con un muerto viviente (ni más ni menos que el autor del poderoso The Tyger y sobretodo de los Proverbs of Hell).  Mientras tanto Dickinson padre contrata a tres matones para que persigan al forastero por el asesinato de Charlie y su “novia”, pero sobretodo por el robo del “pinto” de su hijo. Adentrándose en el territorio Blake y Nadie se dirigen a una cita cuyo término es fácil de adivinar. Blake se convierte en otra persona, una que responde: “¿Conoces mi poesía?” antes de disparar contra un oficial que le apunta. Una persona que escribe con sangre. Cuando Nadie le advierte que lo siguen, Blake responde:

- ¿Estás seguro? Es decir, ¿cómo puedes saberlo?

Y Nadie dice:

- A menudo el hombre blanco es precedido por su hedor maligno.

Blake es ahora un forajido acusado de asesinar a siete personas. Luego de una escaramuza con un taimado predicador (Molina) y sus acompañantes Blake recibe otro impacto de bala. Débil y siguiendo el curso de un río Blake le pregunta a Nadie:

- ¿Es este el bote que me llevará a través del espejo de agua?

- No, le responde su amigo -Este bote no es lo suficientemente fuerte, William Blake.

Al final de la película vemos como uno de los matones de Dickinson, un sanguinario asesino llamado Cole Wilson (Lance Henriksen) los alcanza a la orilla del mar. Blake está preparado para un entierro ritual. Cole y Nadie se disparan. Detrás de ellos la canoa ritual de Blake -el hombre muerto- se aleja. Como en otros momentos de la película la guitarra de Neil Young acompaña la secuencia.

Le film d’aujourd’hui, je l’ai découvert alors que j’étais en fac… quelques mots échappés, j’entends Johnny Depp, j’entends Jim Jarmush, j’entends même Iggy Pop.

Et puis, il y a cette musique obsédante, lancinante de Neil Young.

Ce film, c’est Dead Man, film en noir et blanc de 1995.

De suite, je suis plongé dans un univers, embarqué dans un tourbillon absurde, mélancolique, magnifique. Tout est lent, sublime, savoureux.

Il y a cette vision d’un pan de la vie de William Blake (souvenez-vous, c’est lui qui a inspiré à Jim le nom des Doors !), et puis cette poésie que je découvrais à peine, ce regard si singulier sur notre monde, sur le monde connu et celui qui nous entoure, au-delà des symboles et des forces ancestrales.

Non. Comment vous dire ? Ce film, je devais le voir, comme un appel. Une autre référence pour mon écriture, pour mes univers.

Dear readers,

My birthday has sparked a love for party-throwing and if I had the money I’d throw a party every day.

So, next year, of course I’m going to have a birthday party. First of all I really want to have an “Alice in Wonderland” tea party in March before my buddies and I head off to the El Capitan (crossing my fingers!) to watch it in 3D and see whatever cool props they’re having there. The highlight of my movie-going career so far: seeing Jack Sparrow’s flag up close at the El Capitan for PotC 3. Also, stealthily sweeping up Aztec gold confetti with my feet during the movie to take home. Amanda and I later split it at her house…haha how piratical.

I was pretty sure that my seventeenth birthday would be at the bowling alley. But now I’m thinking Indian pow-wow. We could watch “Dead Man” (or “Pocahontas”, but that’s sort of obvious). I know, not the most uplifting thing to do at a birthday party, and where is one to find a copy of “Dead Man”, but seriously, I could pitch a teepee in the backyard and wear a headress. I have a Navajo drum, I think…

And we could all do a lame attempt at a sun dance. And play a buffalo version of pin-the-tail on the donkey, like, have buffalo scattered on a poster, and give everyone a paper lasso to pin, and whoever rounds up the most buffalo in their lasso wins.

This is getting cooler by the second.

I guess, if you wanted to be extremely shallow about it and six degree it to Johnny Depp, he is 1/16 Native American. But amazingly, I swear this idea did not spawn from him. There’s only one man to thank for this brilliant fun, and that is N. Scott Momaday.

Dear readers,

Club Retrospect is a go! Hooray for all things retro and obsolete!

I love tumblr. Half my day is wasted on tumblr.

A bug is outside rhythmically chirping and I feel like I’m in the opening sequence of “Arizona Dream”. Nothing like eskimos that make gut balloons to distract their kid with while they do it.

I’m excited for the first drama production of the year. What it is, I don’t know, but I remember being on stage in eighth grade and it was almost the best thing ever.

I’m fascinated by World’s Fairs. They’re a breeding place of not only inspiration and awe, but crime and death as well.

I’m very interested in all things Native American all of a sudden. I think it’s because of all that N. Scott Momaday we’re reading in AP Lang. I have the urge to go out, buy a pair of moccasins, do a sun dance, see some bison, and pop “Dead Man” in the DVD player. Moccasins and “Dead Man” more than anything.

I think I may love AP Lang. CLS is at seven in the morning and it’s chemistry and it literally makes my brain hurt, but I walk into AP Lang and everything is fine and dandy again. I don’t care if the only fiction we’re going to read are Catcher in the Rye, The Great Gatsby, and All the Pretty Horses. Nonfiction is very interesting, especially when you’re old enough to realize that it’s not just those dorky books on lizards in the library. I always thought fiction was English, history, and art while nonfiction was math and science and all that stuff I did not understand.

Heck, is this not nonfiction?

I love how we’re analyzing the text in such detail, learning about what writers use to get their point across. I think I love writing just as much as movies now, and this time it’s not a fad. I appreciate the work writers put in just as much as I do directors. AP Lang, it’s been five days and already you’ve started a revolution in my brain.

One day this will be in my home.

My, this post has a lot of sentences beginning with “I”. When I was little I went to an academy of sorts, only it was fun and they had computer games and prizes and a million Red Vines in a jar (yum!). Anyway, I had to make sentences using words on flashcards, and my tutor (every kid had a special tutor, one for math and one for English) would challenge me not to start with “I”. So…there’s that.

P.P.P.P.S. Contemporary media, you are awesome and I love you. But you take up my brain and I can’t think of anything to write about. My screenwriting is severely behind! Not that there is a schedule – other than my entire life. Everytime I get past the writing and into the actual filmmaking, there is an idea rut in my brain. And all the ideas are for shots and angles.

Del resto de producciones de la sección LARGOMETRAJES recomendamos la película alemana “En el séptimo cielo” que, de forma sensible y transgesora, nos narra un amor apasionado en la tercer edad.

En cuanto al apartado CINE DE SIEMPRE, los admiradores del actor Errol Flynn están de enhorabuena puesto que se editan algunos títulos como “El burlador de Castilla”, “Gentleman Jim”, “Kim de la India” y “Oro, amor y sangre”. Señalar, finalmente, que se ponen a la venta el western “El árbol del ahorcado” protagonizado por Gary Cooper, “Extraño cargamento” con Clark Gable y Joan Crawford y “Dead Man” dirigida por Jim Jarmusch con Johnny Depp en el papel principal.

Why do I want to play dead? Simple, my summer is almost over and soon I’ll be heading to this unfamiliar new school. Wandering the halls mostly alone and probably keeping to myself most of the time.

I want to keep looking back to last Tuesday and thinking how quick a week goes by. Time is very frustrating. I have realized time almost always does the opposite of what you want it to do. I know school won’t be completely miserable, but I have no idea what I’m doing. I’m nervous like anyone else. I have my school supplies, some new clothes and a new pair of shoes (all black Authentic Vans to be exact), and my school books. Everything is set and I want to pretend like nothing is going on.

Yesterday was my school orientation. A woman in the office told me where to go to be assigned a locker and be given my books. It was overwhelming and I most likely blocked out what she was saying. “Where do we go?” my mom asked me. I shrugged my shoulders and replied, “I don’t know.” Why is it that whatever advice or direction someone gives me, it goes in one ear and right out the other? Oh right, because I’m in denial.

Sighing is nice. It feels like I’m releasing a bunch of toxins that had been in my lungs. I sigh often now. I am melodramatic and slightly hystrerical. What are ya gonna do?
