I’ve got to say it again. I am astonished at how much the tie-in books to Blackest Night have been delivering. Peter Tomasi and Ardian Syaf deliver a comic here that, as good as the core Batman titles have been lately, can hold its own with any of them.

Dick Grayson has called in his brother, Tim Drake, and the two former Robins prepare to make a last stand against the corpses of their own parents. As Dick and Tim stand, Damian — the current Robin — is sent off to escort Barbara and Jim Gordon to safety, a task he’s none too happy about. The sons of Bruce Wayne have arguably been through more trials and torture than any other characters in comics. Plus, they live in a world where coming back from the dead is almost routine. Is it any wonder that, when faced with their long-dead parents, they feel that surge of hope?

Hope, unfortunately, isn’t quite the emotion these particular Black Lanterns are going for.

Tomasi knocks this out of the park, giving us remarkably strong characterization for our two main heroes as they face their greatest wishes and worst fears. I am a little disappointed that Deadman, such a big player at the beginning of this miniseries, has kind of gone by the wayside at the end, but it isn’t really his story anyway, is it?

Ardian Syaf, a new name to me, has to potential to be one of the next comic book superstars. His linework here is wonderful, and a strong color/art team of Vicente Cifuentes and Nei Ruffino make this one of the best-looking books in the crossover to date.

As good as the current Bat-books are, one of the few elements I’m not happy with is the estrangement of Tim Drake and Dick Grayson. This issue addresses that, to a degree, and promises that things won’t necessarily remain that way. I really hope this thread continues into the main books. It’s a great team-up story for two men who have more in common with each other than anyone else in the world, who should be brothers above all else, and who deserve to have each other’s back. This is a nice start. Let’s see ‘em back together more often.

The Story: The Blackest Night in Gotham concludes, as the Flying Graysons are reunited, and it’s identity crisis all over again for the Drake family. As Dick and Tim are confronted by their deceased loved ones and forced to relive their tragic pasts, they must figure out how they can defeat these Black Lanterns. With the help of Deadman and DC’s favorite demon, Etrigan, the Wayne family continues to battle old familiar faces. 

What’s Good: Tomasi gives us a fast-paced, action-packed conclusion that delivers some pretty memorable entertainment. From Batman and Robin fighting off the Black Lanterns with their seemingly endless supply of firepower, to the emotional and haunting iconic moments these heroes have dealt with in the past, there’s just as much action to the moments we’ll always remember with these characters. Furthermore, along with all this excitement, Tomasi finds a way to fit in a logical and awesome team up with Etrigan.

As for the art, I would like to see Adrian Syaf become a regular artist for a Bat title. He provides the necessary cinematic action, through his paneling choice– carefully capturing and fitting the right moments in each frame, whether it be emotional or violent– and the detailed brutal blows our heroes deliver to their enemies. Just like Tomasi’s writing, Syaf’s art delivers in the entertainment and subtext departments. The images thrill and make us remember.

What’s Not So Good: Although Tomasi provides us an entertaining story, I can’t help but feel a little cheated with this series’ ending. It comes off as rushed and thoroughly thought through, as Batman’s discovery to effectively combat the Black Lanterns comes out of nowhere and accidentally. Or even, not exactly explained as to how he thought of that… Also I’m still disappointed that there was nothing in this mini series that spent any memorable amount of time on the possibility of the Wayne sons encountering Bruce. It was nice to see some of the Chris Yost Red Robin in one moment, but that was easily pushed aside as this series continued to turn its focus on Black Lanterns in Gotham. I suppose the Bat-fan in me is waiting a little too anxiously to see the real Batman come back.

Conclusion: Blackest Night: Batman concludes as a decent mini series that adequately accompanies the ongoing blockbuster. However, don’t expect much from this story as it’s no different from the basic Blackest Night side story; where a hero encounters a Black Lantern version of a loved one, and their minds and emotions are challenged and seduced into believing in them.

Two down and 8 to go, hopefully by now you will have been having some fun in the junkyard, and be working your way through worlds made of cakes, biccies and cups of coffee! As previously mentioned, all the games in THIS top ten are priced at 80 points.

So buy yourself 800 points and get ready for the fun to continue..

8.  Hieronymus Bash

The concept of Heaven Vs Hell isn’t a new one, but what if the final battle between the forces of good and evil was played out over a game of Dodgeball with human souls as the balls. Hieronymus Bash is that very game! The basic premise is that you must grab a soul and fire it towards the enemy. Score a hit, and you grow in size. 3 hits and you glow with divine light or hellfire and become deadly. One more hit to the enemy and they are out! The game can be played by up to 4 players 2 on 2. The graphics are simple yet vibrant and full of character! Hearing the little angels shout “Repent” when you score a hit never fails to bring a smile to my face!

7. Plows In Hell

So if Heaven and Hell Dodgeball was too run of the mill, then give Plows In Hell a try. You play as a snowplow, trapped in hell. In an attempt to save your soul you battle waves of enemies using your mounted laser cannon, a turret you can place and some bait to attract the little buggers away from killing you. The big problem is that the battle takes place on a huge ice platform, being continuously melted by the fires of Hell burning away beneath you. Its not just Hellfire giving you grief, your laserfire, exploding enemies and nasty robots with flame jets melt the ground away!  As with many of these Indie Games the High Score and pursuit there of is king. You are left wondering if you changed the placement of the turret or kept its health up with your repair beam, could you have lasted a few more waves? The fun is in trying again to find out!

Shank is the second game from Klei, makers of XBLA hit a few years back Eets: Chowdown. They also had a hand in N+, also for XBLA. This time around Klei are going down the road of scrolling beat em up and boy are they doing it in style! The amazing graphic novel visuals combined with violence the likes of which would make John Rambo blush to make an action game to beat all others. The game strikes me as the bastard son of Metal Slug and Castle Crashers and that sure makes for a pretty baby!

The Xbox Live Indie Games (Formerly Community Games) has something of a bad reputation.

Even on our own Facebook page people have said to steer clear a they are all rubbish. In truth of course, this is not the case. Since launch of the service over 500 titles have been released butits only recently and the change in price structure that they really started pushing for your attention and you Micosoft Points. The introduction of the 80 point price, gave developers the chance to put out extremely low cost games into a market facing steep price RISES in conventional stores. 80 points equates to around 66p! Not everything is suddenly rosey in the Garden of Indie and bad games still out number the good. So DPAD Dependency present part 1 of the Top Ten Xbox Indie Games (for 80 points)!

10. Johnny Platform’s Biscuit Romp

Old school platforming action at it’s finest! Starting life as a homebrew title for R4 owning Ds players, JPBR has all the 8bit/Early 16 bit charm you could ask for. The platforming action is based on a single screen, rather than the scrolling platform adventures that Mario made so popular. Each level being a puzzle asking you to kill all the enemies and collecting cups of coffee with a slurp! The graphics retain all this retro charm and always through design rather than budget restraints and lack of polish as can be seenin other Indie games. 55 levels await you starting with the very simple tutorial stages to brain bending, double jumping, pad throwing levels. but, like all great games you will say “one more go” to yourself more times than you really should!

9. Junkyard Battle

Indie games brings you experiances to your 360 that you would otherwise likely never play on the console. Junkyard Battle is a multiplayer head to head battle to build a tower from the junk dropped into the playing area from the top of the screen. Controlling a mechanical arm,  you pick up items and balance them on top of each other to create your pile quicker than the opponent.  Whoever has the lower of the two towers, suffers from a dropping life bar so the heat is on to keep you tower high while trying to lob items towards the enemy stack in an effort to sabotage their structure. Its a simple premise that will keep you and a friend coming back to time and time again. There is a single player tutorial but no additional missions.

So there you have it, two games for you to get started with. Both games are available now, at 80 points each. Given the price of Avatar clothing you get a pretty good deal. Try out the demo versions at least and comment.

Oh Texas how I miss you so – the easy breezy drawl of your people, the down-home food, and the Blues done right. I’ve got so much to say about Texas and its music – they got it going on down on the third coast. This posting will mainly deal with the illustrious city of Austin, but the entirety of Texas is just overflowing with music history, scenes and styles. Dallas gave us Erykah Badu, San Antonio and South Texas gave us Tejano, and then there’s Texas Swing out of West Texas. This post will mainly sample a spattering of the Austin scene including Jazz, Fusion, Americana, and Blues. In a few days, I will post Part 2 of my ode to Texas that will focus on the blues history of Texas – ’cause rootnotemusic LOVES THE BLUES!

If you read my very first post, then you know my sister plays bass guitar with The Tiny Tin Hearts, an Austin folk-pop symphonic band getting a lot of attention. They recently had their album release party at The Parish. Check out Last Flight of the Martyr Aviator via Waterloo Records or I-Tunes. Steven Collins and Deadman played with TTTH that night. I really like their vibe and sound – they keep it rootsy! I immediately thought of The Band when I heard them, and I’m not the only one, but with their accordion and sprinklings of Spanglish, they could only be from Texas! Here’s Deadman at the Parish:

I lived in Austin for a short while and I loved it. Austin reminds me of New Orleans in the sense that it bleeds music from every pore. Arriving at the Austin airport, you’re greeted with a live band doing anything from Americana or Texas Swing to Soul or Indie Rock. South by Southwest (SXSW) has become one of the hugest music industry events of the year where the entire city is turned into one large venue. In fact, Austin City Limits Festival has become one of the biggest music festivals around.

Austin is not just about Blues, Country and Americana. The last thing I thought I’d be doing in Austin was dancing my butt off to funky jazz in a too-cool-for-school basement jazz club, but within a couple of weeks of landing in town, that’s exactly what I was doing! The Elephant Room on Congress is this awesome intimate jazz spot where the tables run into each other and the music literally takes over every corner of the club. I saw funk jazz band, Just Released, for the first time there and was hooked. I saw them a few more times at clubs around town and they always came through!

I will end this post with a shot out to Trace Ready, a Dallas based documentary filmmaker. He just released this trailer on his blog about his new documentary on “South Texas Soul: The San Antonio Sound”, which is after my own music-history-loving heart. Here he looks at Augie Meyers, Doug Sahm, and German, Polish and Irish Immigrants in South Texas and how their culture and music influenced popular styles including Country, Tejano, Blues, and Rock and Roll.

You dont see them coming, but moments of genius can change your perception forever.

I pledge to only play XBLA and Indie Games on my Xbox 360, for an entire year. No Left 4 Dead 2  , Forza 3, O.D.S.T or Alan Wake for me. I want to find out if XBLA is a strong enough platform that i can survive on it alone, or break and play a full retail game. I NEED to know, if radically changing the video games i play will have an effect on my views on gaming as a whole. How will my friends react when i cant join them on the latest 360 multiplayer titles? And maybe, jut maybe will i find such a rich vein of untapped gaming goodness knee deep in XBLA that i even neglect my PS3?

So how did i land on such a hair brained scheme? Read  on…

I’m heading abroad in a few years to Australia and need to start raising cash FAST! In an effort to plan ahead i decided to trade a load of games in, and retain the value on a gift card like a squirrel hoarding nuts for the winter. I was pretty ruthless and took a huge stack of titles into Game and it was here that i learned that they were offering £120 CASH MONEY for my Nintendo Wii. The thought of not having all 3 major consoles troubled me a great deal but the dust layer on the Wii was a clear indication that i could probably live without.

Selling the Wii got me thinking. “Do i really need a 360 AND a PS3?”  i haven’t been a one console guy since the Mega Drive days, and even then i remember feeling like the pimp daddy when i bought a SNES to sit next to it.

Back to present day, and i began to face reality. Immigration aint cheap, and are there really any Xbox Exclusives im going to miss? I began to prepare myself to say goodbye to the 360. With my 360 games collection down to three titles (Ok, i have more but i dont count promo copies of games, or games ive already finished) i sat down to give em a bit of a play as a send off. Then it happened…

Despite being quick to write off virtually all of my 360 retail games, once i was eye to eye with my downloaded titles i found them much less disposable.

CastleVania: Symphony of the Night, Bomberman Live, Garou: Mark Of The Wolves, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix, Pacman Championship and even Uno were putting up a much more fierce arguement to be kept than my usual 360 diet of endless first person shooters.

So here i am with a 360 and just XBLA games for company, and thats when i had the moment of genius.

Just to clarify here are the rules:

I WILL NOT play a full retail X360 game on my home console, neither store bought or from Games on Demand

I WILL only play XBLA and Indie Games

If at a friends house and they are playing a 360 game i CAN join in, but friends CANT come to my place the play a retail game. My gamercard will remain free from 306 retail games for 1 year starting today!

ไม่มีคำตอบทางสัจนิยม(เมื่อใด ที่ไหน ที่มาที่ไป)ให้ควานหา หนังหักคอคนดูให้ยอมรับในความแปลกเื่ลื่อนลอยและหลบลี้จากโลกพื้น ๆ คนดูได้เห็นก็แต่ภาพธรรมชาติอันทารุณหฤโหด (ความหนาวเหน็บ น้ำแข็ง ภูเขา ทะเลสาบรกเรื้อ เสียงลมพัดโยกไล้ไม้ใหญ่)และในอีกด้านหนึ่งก็แฝงความรู้สึกต่อแรงปรารถนาและกิเลสและตัณหาของมนุษย์ จะมีหนังเรื่องไหนทะยานออกจากแล่งได้ทรงพลังเท่าหนังเรื่องนี้ เนื้อแท้ของ Un Lac คือการหาทางระบายแรงปรารถนา การดับพยศ ความทะยานอยากจากเบ้าครอบครัวสามัญ จากลวดลายความใจถึงทางศิลปะ กร็องดิเออส์บันทึกรายละเอียดภายในบ้านจากทุกกระเบียดนิ้ว ทุกซอกหลืบ ทุกอวลอณู ไว้ครบถ้วน แม้แต่โต๊ะรับประทานอาหาร เตียงในเงาสลัว ไล่มาจนวงในของการก่อหวอดความสัมพันธ์(ขาดเสียมิได้ซึ่งทางเพศ)ระหว่างใครต่อใคร

ระหว่างการเสวนาแนะนำหนัง มีคำถามถึงกร็องดริเออส์ว่าเหตุใดจึงไม่มีความป่าเถื่อนจากหนังเรื่องก่อน ๆ หลงเหลือตกทอดมาถึงงานชิ้นใหม่ กร็องดริเออส์ตอบไว้ว่า ความรุนแรงไม่ได้สาบสูญไปไหน เขาเพียงแต่นำด้านอื่นมานำเสนอ คราวนี้แทรกซึมอยู่ในฉากหลังของหนัง สัมพันธภาพระหว่างฉากหลังกับเรื่องราว มีความสำคัญต่องานของผู้กำกับ กล่าวคือ มีการบ่ายหน้าออกจากสภาพแวดล้อมที่เป็นชุมชนเมืองอันเป็นฉากหลังของงานสองเรื่องก่อนหน้า มาสู่ป่าดงในเรื่องที่สามนี้ แม้จะขาดสีสันบรรยากาศของเมืองอย่างใน Sombre และ La Vie Nouvelle ที่ผู้กำกับจะบรรเลงเรื่องราวผ่านเสียงอึกทึกจากโรงระบำยามค่ำอันมีอานุภาพเป็นใจแก่กิจกรรมการชำเราสตรีเพศ(misogyny) แต่ป่าแลปแลนด์ก็เิปิดโอกาสให้มีการเปรียบต่างอย่างลุ่มลึกและครบเครื่อง ส่งผลให้กิจกรรมพื้น ๆ เช่นการตัดต้นไม้ก็อาจบานปลายร้ายแรงมาเข้าทางที่เจ้าตัวผู้กำกับเคยวาดลวดลายไว้

งานของกร็องดิเออส์อาจนับญาติทางวัฒนธรรมได้กับงานหลายสาย แล้วแต่บรรทัดฐานไม่ว่าจะเป็นงานขึ้นหิ้งของบรมครู(เช่น มัวร์เนา(Murnau) ทาร์คอฟสกี(Tarkovsky)แฮร์โซก(Herzog) แบร็คเคจ(Brakhage)) งานด้านภาพ(แคสเปอร์ เดวิด ฟรีดดิช(Caspar David Friedrich) เทอร์เนอร์(Turner) จอห์น มาร์ติน(John Martin)) กวีนิพนธ์-วรรณศิลป์(เกออร์ก ทรากึล(Georg Trakl) อาเดลแบรต์ สติฟเตอร์(Adalbert Stifter)) รวมถึงงานชิ้นก่อน ๆ ของตนเอง

กล้องไหวระริก กระแทกกระทั้น เหม่อลอย ปล่อยภาพหลุดศูนย์เล็ง พร่าพริ้ว อยู่ร่ำไป ความมืดสยายอำนาจ บทพูดหากไม่ส่อเสียด ก็เหมือนดอกพิกุลจะร่วง(คุณไม่รู้ว่าฉันเป็นใคร แต่ฉันรู้ฉันต้องการอะไรจากคุณ) ภูมิโสตล้วนเข้าฝักมีทีเด็ดเนียนแน่น ครบเครื่องทั้งระนาบเสียงและการถ่ายทอดความรู้สึกผ่านเสียง และส่วนที่จริงยิ่งกว่าก็คือวูบประสบการณ์จากการอ้างอิงทางวัฒนธรรม อึดใจสุดตะลึงของหนังเอง ว่าด้วยกำเนิดแห่งดนตรี(ไม่ปรากฏดนตรีประกอบอีกต่างหาก) เริ่มจากเสียง จากนั้น(ไร้เทียมทาน)เปียนโนก็เข้าผสมโรง การปรากฏโฉมของ Liederkreis ของชูมานน์แบบไม่มีปี่ไม่มีขลุ่ย และถือเป็นหนึ่งในการพริ้วผลัดสุดเฉียบคมของหนัง “เสียงเธอไม่เหมือนเดิมอีกต่อไป” พี่ชายเปรยกับน้องสาว เพียงประโยคเดียวก็พาหนังโบยบินสู่ห้วงทิพยธรรม

แต่อาจมีหลายเสียงแย้งว่า ก็ใช่จะไม่เคยสัมผัสและรู้เห็นความกลมกลืนในแบบเดียวกับ Un Lac เอาเสียเลย หนังงอกงามอยู่ในคนดูเพื่อต่อยอดลูกล่อลูกชนไปไม่สิ้นสุด ภาพและเสียงแรกทยอยหลากมาระลอกแล้วระลอกเล่า การขยักขย่อนเิปิดตัวสมาชิกในครอบครัวทีละคนสองคนเป็นไปตามโครงสร้างการสั่งสมแรงปะทะและปะทุ จู่ ๆ แม่ก็โผล่มา คนแปลกหน้า พ่อ และต้องไม่ลืมม้า หนึ่งในตัวละครสำคัญของหนัง

เสน่ห์ของหนังอยู่ตรงความสดสะพรั่ง ไม่ว่าจะเป็นอากาศบริสุทธิ์ ผิวพรรณผุดผ่อง (ผิวหนังในในหนังเรื่องอื่น ๆ ดูจอมปลอมไปถนัดตา) ท่วงทีและท่าทางแปลก ๆ ดังที่แกรนท์ แม็คโดนัลด์(Grant McDonald)ตั้งข้อสังเกตว่า เป็นการสำแดงองค์ความรู้ต่อเรือนร่างมนุษย์และโดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งร่างกายในท่วงท่าพิเศษ มีการแหงนหน้า เหยียดคอ พร้อมกับกระพริบนัยน์ตา การเพ่งมองต้นไม้ การเงี่ยหูฟังเสียงแว่ว ความรู้สึกขณะปุยหิมะร่วงหล่นลงบนเรือนผมและใบหน้า ลวดลายควบกล้ำคาบลูกคาบดอกดังกล่าวมีให้เห็นตั้งแต่ช่วงท้ายของ La Vie Nouvelle แล้ว โดยในครั้งนั้นเป็นการห้ำหั่นกันระหว่างความเกรี้ยวกราดมุทะลุกับการจุติ ที่ต่างพันตูทะลวงผ่านเสียงกรีดร้องในห้วงอวกาศ แต่ครั้งนี้มาในรูปการรำพึงรำพันและครุ่นคำนึงถึงความรัก

When it comes to the recently completed Wednesday Comics, I will say this much for DC: they are not afraid to take chances, and I will always like that about them.

As you all know, Wednesday Comics has been yet another in a long line of DC’s mostly successful weekly comic serials, but was produced this time with a twist: designed to read and feel like a Sunday newspaper comics section. DC published their anthology in an oversized format that could be unfolded and read like a paper.  Each page of the comic featured one story from a different creative team, and each week the stories would slowly come together, page by lavishly rendered page.

Cool idea, right?  I sure thought so.  But now here I sit, glaring thoughtfully at the stack of Wednesday Comics that have been gathering over the weeks, and I’m wondering why it has left me feeling strangely unimpressed and underwhelmed.  How could such a fresh and inventive idea have turned out to be just another adequate comic experience?  I need to understand why, and if you’re reading this then I’m hoping you do, too.

Wednesday Comics’ faults certainly can’t be found in its production value, that’s for sure.  On all levels this was a gorgeous book, and that’s saying something for glorified newsprint.  Mark Chiarello had an eye on design and aesthetic appeal when he put together this project, something to be expected from DC’s Editorial Art Director, and if his bosses haven’t yet given him a fat bonus for his work then they really, really need to.  By adopting the oversized pages, Chiarello gave his art teams the chance to shine and have some real fun with this book (and say what you will, but Wednesday Comics was a comic clearly intended for the artists.  Don’t believe me?  Just look at what Dave Bullock pulled off with Deadman).

I also found the portability of it to be incredibly appealing, and enjoyed the reaction I got from non-comic readers when I took it out into “the real world.”  I remember one moment where I was sitting in the doctor’s office and, for lack of anything else to do, pulled an issue out of my bag, unfolded it, and began reading.  An older gentleman sitting across from me leaned over and said “those the funnies?”  I smiled and said kind of, and then explained how it was actually a comic book designed to be read and carried around like a newspaper.  He asked if he could flip through it, and asked me questions as he did.  We talked and had a good time, but more on this in a bit.

So Wednesday Comics looked good, and was physically fun to read.  Where then did things go wrong for me?

Sadly, I find fault with the majority of the writers and their inability to use the Wednesday Comics format to their advantage.  Of course, this isn’t to say that no good stories were told, because a few like Strange Adventures and Kamandi were consistently wonderful week after week, but it became painfully obvious that most of the writers were either uncomfortable with this format or simply didn’t know what to do with it.  It seemed to me that they took the safe way out by telling conventional stories that gave their artists little opportunity to do anything other than what they were instructed to.  Azzarello’s Batman and Busiek’s Green Lantern were glaring examples of this; both had the potential to be great, and were ripe with artistic opportunities, but the plots were so formulaic and the scripts so rigid that they instead languished in mediocrity.

I was also shocked that such a “low-fi” project like this (as opposed to comics that tout glossy paper and computer-rendered colors) had the gall to charge $4 an issue.  I mean, we’re talking about 15 pages of story on newsprint here… even the typical 22 page comic book costs less than this.  What if you were only buying this comic so you could read Kyle Baker’s Hawkman story?  Even if you liked the other stories, you simply had to read this one weekly.  This means that if you wanted to follow his entire story, you would have to shell out $48 (assuming you didn’t care one bit for all the others).  That price obviously goes down as you increase your number of must read stories, but anthology comics like this are mixed bags where not every story is going to be that damn good, (did anybody actually read Caldwell’s Wonder Woman!?) and when those stories don’t deliver the maximum bang for the buck each and every week, you’re left paying for more than you actually wanted.

As I look over these complaints and compliments, it seems to me that they ultimately speak to a larger missed opportunity, and that’s one of reaching new readers.  Remember that older gentleman from the doctor’s office I was telling you about?  Why wasn’t Wednesday Comics written for him?  Or the kids who (hopefully) read Teen Titans and Supergirl, why wasn’t this entire serial written exclusively for their enjoyment?  In an awkward attempt to appease all of the people all of the time, DC tried to market this comic to fanboys, new readers, and young readers alike without ever fully capturing any of them, and that’s a shame because Wednesday Comics could have made a great primer to introduce new readers into the medium.

You can see how DC kind of wanted to try this.  While it helps that they also serialized the Superman story in USA Today, why didn’t they then also serialize stories in teen magazines, or fucking Highlights for that matter?  Why was Wednesday Comics only sold in comic shops when it could have done so much more good in a bookstore, grocery store, or Walmart?  By trying to appeal to those of us already locked into the direct market, DC inadvertently missed even greater markets of new readers and customers.

Ultimately, the stories contained in Wednesday Comics were nothing I needed to read, and as a diehard fan with years of reading experience I felt they weren’t anything I haven’t already seen before.  I applaud DC for taking a chance in trying something different, but I’m disappointed that they worked so hard to sell this to me, the guy who’s going to buy their comics regardless, when all along they should have marketed it to a newer, younger reader, and thus a potential new customer.

Well, there you have it. Perhaps the most novel and interesting comic book format to ever hit the stands wraps up this week with the final installment of Wednesday Comics. My co-editor Tony has a longer column in the works about this whole endeavor, but before I get to the individual story reviews, I’d be remiss not to share some brief general thoughts.

When this comic first came out, I absolutely loved it. I mean LOVED it. But as the installments kept coming, my enjoyment began exiting. I think the main reason for this is that in the beginning, this truly unique newspaper format captured and catapulted my imagination into directions the comic itself wasn’t taking. For example, I for one wasn’t thinking that every story was going to be an arc. I thought there would be some variance in the stories and some would be a series of one shots, some would be mini-arcs, and some would be full blown arcs. I was shocked that they would all be slow building arcs, which essentially meant that creators were making a full comic and segmenting it into different parts. To me this is a failure to really maximize the format and an inability for the content to match the novel form.

As I said, more to come from WCBR on this topic, so now let’s get down to grading the individual stories per this issue and their final grade:

Batman by Brian Azzarello (writer), Eduardo Risso (artist) – A tragic story whose conclusion we all saw coming 2 months ago. However, this installment captured the moment fantastically much like the first one. Unfortunately, I will always associate this strip with the bloody kiss at the end. Yuck. B+ (Final Grade: B)

Kamandi by Dave Gibbons (writer), Ryan Sook (artist)– A great ending to a great series. This is one of the true successes of this series. A (Final Grade: A+)

Superman by John Arcudi (writer), Lee Bermejo (artist) – Great, great art. But stupid writing. For example, why would residents of Smallville be comfortable with a huge Alien sitting in the street? Little dogs just walking by it? Superman using a pay phone? Confusing Lois and Batman scenes at the end… C- (Final Grade C+)

Deadman by Dave Bullock and Vinton Heuck (writers), Dave Bullock (artist) –This was the surprise hit for me. I could never imagine being into Deadman, but this was one of my favorites. Nice ending that tied-up loose threads cleanly. A (Final Grade: A)

Green Lantern by Kurt Busiek (writer), Joe Quinones (artist), Pat Brosseau (colorist) – Overall, an unimaginative story with excellent character development that played homage to iconic moments. Fans of old school GL will probably like this much more than those of us in the post- Johns take on GL. This issue was a true microcosm  of the story’s entirety. B- (Final Grade B)

Metamorpho by Neil Gaiman (writer), Mike Allred (artist) – This comic came together much better than when it started and in the end, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The end kept up the fun weirdness and quirky characters. A- (Final Grade B)

Teen Titans by Eddie Berganza (writer), Sean Galloway (artist) – Lame action, confusing story, and failed nostalgia. Really hoping the bad guy (who ever it was- I was lost to it) destroyed the Titans. D (Final Grade D)

Strange Adventures by Paul Pope – Awesome comic, awesome installment. Clicked on every level and ended in existential musings that were perfect for this title. Put Pope on this regularly. A+ (Final Grade (A+)

Supergirl by Jimmy Palmiotti (writer), Amanda Conner (artist) – This was my second favorite series behind Strange Adventures. The direction was clear, focused, and the momentum took it to all the right places of the DC Universe. Loved the ending, even though it was cliche’ and silly. A (Final Grade A)

Metal Men by Dan Didio (writer), Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez (artist) – Really enjoyed the art and characters, but the story was just stagnant and claustrophobic. Such a forgettable ending and series… B- (Final Grade C+)

Wonder Woman by Ben Caldwell – I never read this. The color scheme and art turned me off, so I have no grade. But, I will read it….. one day… maybe.

Sgt. Rock by Adam Kubert (writer), Joe Kubert (artist) – I liked the message and emotional importance of the ending, but overall, seeing Rock get tortured for 4 weeks straight was a waste of this story. Loved the art though. B (Final Grade C)

The Flash by Karl Kerschl and Brenden Fletcher (writers), Karl Kerschl (artist) Iris West by Dave McCaig (writer), Rob Leigh (artist) — Can someone please diagram for me what happened here? I have never been so lost in a story. Did Kershel acknowledge that the whole plot was nonsensical when Iris read a Flash comic and said, “I don’t get it?” Art saves this from being an F. D- (Final Grade D-)

The Demon and Catwoman by Walter Simonson (writer), Brian Stelfreeze (artist) – Solid outing all around. That being said, none of this particularly interested me. The Shakespeare reference was cool, though. B+ (Final Grade (B-)

Hawkman by Kyle Baker – Next to Pope’s work, this was my favorite art. Looked like drawings on a wet newspaper and I loved it. Overly, chatty ending that seemed all a little corny. But, really an entertaining story in entirety.  B (Final Grade A-)

Before I go on any further, I must make a disclaimer..

And I suppose this is the only reason why Fables and Ex Machina had not made their appearances on this list yet. I try very hard not to get any spoilers, so yes, I don’t read the individual issues.

Having said that, brilliant though Fables and Ex Machina might be, I’m wondering if they would be good enough to unseat the best books the awesome Blackest Night and the sometimes brilliant Dark Reign had been serving up so far.

Blackest Night has yet to hit a false note (discounting Blackest Night: Teen Titans, but Teen Titans had not been a heavyweight contender for a very long time), serving up suspense, horror, mystery and superb story telling in fell swoop.

Dark Reign, no matter what critics had been saying, managed to massively shake up the status quo in the Mar-verse. The sheer volume of work and the number of characters shaken up by the mega event is truly mind blowing.

True, some of the not so good (ok, horrible) issues of this mega cross over stinks strongly of geek-xploitation, but even the staunchest critics have to admit that the best issues of Dark Reign features some of the best story telling and intriguing character development in the medium for a very long time.

Which brings us to the 2 contenders for the Comic of the week for the week of 17 Sep.

First up, we have Dark Avengers #9. Nick Fury and his “Caterpillars” seems to be everywhere this month.And in Dark Avengers #9, they had a confrontation with Phobos’ Dad, Ares, the @#$% God of War with his “No @#$%” Axe given by Zeus.

By all accounts, it is an inevitable face off. I mean, Nick Fury all but kidnapped his @#$% kid and pitted him against the Dad. What would’ve turned out to be a mindless slugfest in lesser hands became a real character exploration of the various (ok, Ares and Phobos) characters featured in the issue.

Quite a lot of people had been complaining about how the Dark Avengers series had been missing one crucial ingredient, namely…. The Dark Avengers. The Dark Avengers rarely feature in their own monthly, preferring to pop up in other Dark Reign Titles – to the extend of seeming to have the ability to be at multiple places at the same time ( I am looking at you, Dakan). But I prefer to think of each issue so far as Bendis adding layers to each of the Dark Avengers individually.

Dark Avengers #9 certainly shows Ares to be more than a mindless war mongering piece of meat at Norman Orsbornes’ beck and call.

Contender 2 for this week, is of course, Blackest Night #3. Besides continuing the slug fest between the Black Lanterns with Hal Jordan and Barry Allen, (adding the Ray and Firestorm to the lineup for good measures), this issue shows the first movement of the mysterious Indigo Lanterns.

The Peter Tomasi train of awesome continued this week with Blackest Night: Batman #2. Last issue, Dick Grayson discovered the Black Lanterns had targeted the corpses of his parents and those of Tim Drake’s. Summoning Red Robin back to Gotham, the three sons of Bruce Wayne prepare to go to war for the soul of Gotham itself.

So much to like about this issue, where to begin? First of all, one of the few things in the Batman: Reborn relaunch that I’ve been less than happy with is Tim’s separation from the rest of the family. Having him here alongside Dick and Damian, where he belongs, was a treat in and of itself. But even more than that, there’s a ton of great action here as well. The battles with the Black Lanterns of a dozen dead Batman rogues really reach a high point this issue, with each of them facing some demons (literally) and racing to save the lives of Jim and Barbara Gordon.

Let’s not forget our co-star for this series, Deadman. Although he doesn’t have quite as much to do this issue as last, the stuff he does have is really good. There’s a great little “team-up” with Oracle here, as Deadman really reminds us how capable she is. Tim and Dick both have really powerful moments in their own right, and there’s a wonderful early exchange between Dick and Damian that nicely encapsulates their relationship.

Ardian Syaf’s artwork is just fantastic. I love the renditions of our four heroes, the Black Lanterns are nice and creepy, and demonic. This spin-off has been immensely entertaining, and I’m really psyched for the third and final issue next month.

El orondo director da algunos avances interesantes.

A parte de hablar de El Hobbit, película la cual estamos todos por ver, Guillermo Del Toro ha comentado en los foros de TheOneRing:

“En unos pocos días habrá una GRAN noticia (grande para mí al menos) y que no está relacionada con El Hobbit. Y antes que comencéis con “¿Cómo lo hace para tener tiempo para todo?” “¿Afectará negativamente al Hobbit?” Es un proyecto en el cual llevo trabajando 2 años, antes que El Hobbit, y que va a dar frutos de aquí a medio plazo, sin que interfiera con mi trabajo en El Hobbit. Estad tranquilos. La letra clave es la D.”

Y comienzan las especulaciones. Casi todo el mundo apunta a Deadman, proyecto que nació en 2006 (3 años, no 2) y que ha conseguido a Nikolaj Arcel como director recientemente. ¿Posibilidad de nombrar al actor principal… Doug Jones (otra D)? Pero sinceramente… ¿Esto sería una gran noticia?

También tenemos la posibilidad que se refiera a la adaptación de la novela Droods de Dan Simmons (2 Ds), la cual sigue muy de cerca el director mejicano.

Y seguimos con otras posibilidades como por ejemplo Don´t Be Afraid Of The Dark, o una película del Dr. Extraño para Disney-Marvel, junto a Neil Gaiman. Ya habló Del Toro en 2008 sobre el proyecto a la revista Empire, y para el 2012,
Y sin salirnos de Neil Gaiman… ¿Pudiera ser por fin la adaptación de Death The High Cost of Living?

JLA RED
Over at Drawingboard.org the theme for this month’s superhero JAM is Red. A while back I did JLA team BLACK with Batman, Black Lighting, Black Canary, Phantom Stranger, and the Resurrection Man. The plan was to do a team Green, Blue, Yellow, Orange and Red. Well I’ve done the red team now and I have no plans to do the others at this point but it was quick fun to pull this team together. I wanted to do it quickly so i went the cartoony route with them. For those that don’t know, they are Adam Strange, the Flash, Red Tornado, Deadman, Plastic Man and Shazam the Justice League of America team RED!

Remember last week when I posted the news that Guillermo del Toro would be producing a Deadman film based on the exploits of DC Comics character Boston Brand? What am I talking about. This is the internet you don’t need to remember anything. It’s all there at the click of a mouse. Go read and come back….good. Here we go then.

The Deadman film is meant to be directed by Nikolaj Arcel. The thought was that it would be getting done, along with his Frankenstein film and numerous other projects once the big task of The Hobbit was all done and dusted.

Then the mighty Filmstalker drew my attention to this post that del Toro left on TheOneRing.net:

In a few days there will be a BIG announcement (big for me, at least) that is not-Hobbit related. BEFORE anyone starts wondering the usual “how does he have time?, Is this detracting form The Hobbit?” etc It is a project that started over 2 years ago, before The Hobbit and will render fruits in the mid-term, not intruding on my Hobbit duties. Rest assured. The key letter is “D”

The letter D…the obvious one is Deadman, but I don’t think he started that over two years ago. The other options are Dr Strange (which would be amazing in the hands of del Toro), Drood, Daredevil, and whatever else you can think of with D. Maybe Tenacious D?

I reckon it will be Deadman or Dr Strange, probably the latter as that’s been talked about for a few years and Marvel being bought by Disney means another D, but only time will tell. I am surprised that he is going to whack out a quick film before The Hobbit is finished. He sure loves keeping busy.

What D do you think it will be? If Deadman I could see Doug Jones playing him, but if it is Dr Strange then who could be the right actor for that?

El proyecto no estaba tan “muerto” como parecía.

Es gracioso que el proyecto comenzara a tener cuerpo allá por Diciembre del 2006, cuando saltó a la palestra que Guillermo “Omnipresente” Del Toro estaba interesado en el mismo.

Después se habló que simplemente se trataría de un trailer, y no de una película, lo cual dejó trastocado a más de uno y una.

Ahora, casi 3 años después, se confirma director para la adaptación de Deadman: el danés Nikolaj Arcel. Del Toro producirá junto a Don Murphy.

Deadman es el fantasma del artista circense asesinado Boston Brand. Puede poseer a cualquier ser vivo, con el fin de que se imponga la justicia.

Warner se pone las pilas, y piensa sacar todo su arsenal para hacerle frente a la, hasta ahora, superpoderosa Marvel (desde ayer en propiedad de Disney).

Y Wonder Woman estancada…

Continuing his conquest of as much as he can possibly handle at one time, Guillermo Del Toro has been attached as the producer for the big screen adaptation of DC Comic’s body possessing paranormal detective, Boston Brand, more commonly known as Deadman. I think it’s safe to say this movie will have a pretty dark tone, though Deadman commonly lends himself to a dark type of comedy.

Not only has Del Toro been attached to produce, but Nikolaj Arcel has been attached to direct the film as well. Deadman will of course be created under the Warner Bros. film banner, as all DC Comics properties are (at least there’s SOMETHING DC has over Marvel for movies). I almost lost track of this amidst the barrage of Marvel news today, but I prevailed.
