Sub Focus are back with radiant dark synth and haunting melodies.  Their remixes can take on a whole new form, especially that Empire Of The Sun remix. Still they find ways to transcend hypnotic synth rifts in pretty much everything.  Also powerful in Drum N Bass, Nick Douma is setting up shop in England where you can find him on New Years celebrating at Brixton Academy.  Check him out, the show’s pretty decent. Cage the Elephant – Aint No Rest for the Wicked

Like this song a lot. It sounds a lot like Raconteurs. I know this song has been out for a while, but I just now actually started to notice it. It recently played on the commercial for Borderlands. Recently found a live version of it, and they sounded really good live also. Hopefully they come to Atlanta soon.

Phoenix – Lisztomania

Everyone’s favorite band from 2009 Phoenix has been getting a lot of recognition this year, which they rightly deserve…. This is my favorite song off  Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. They are featured in this months GQ.

Lady Gaga feat. Beyonce – Telephone

Okay- I don’t really know what to say about Lady Gaga. She is obviously the poster child for pop-hipsters now. Her insanity is a great marketing ploy and dammit if it doesn’t work great. She is makin’ bank. This will be raging through the radio and it won’t be long before the remixes come pouring in a la Poker Face.

Jay-Z feat. Mr. Hudson – Young Forever

This is Jay-Z’s take on Alphaville (no, Forever Young didn’t come from that one episode of The OC). I hated it at first listen, but the more I listen, the more I think it’s the best song on The Blueprint 3. It’s great and chill and it’ll get stuck in your head.

Three 6 Mafia – Feel It (feat. Tiesto and Sean Kingston)

I just posted this the other day…but damnnn. I like it. A lot of people are getting pissy over all the electro-rap lately…I don’t care. I welcome it and haven’t gotten tired of it just yet. Yeah…Sean Kingston is annoying, but whatever….It’s a harmless song. Probably a little to electric for mainstream and won’t get much radio play. I am looking forward to Three 6’s new CD out in January.

Don’t let the album art fool you; I assure you this song is in no way associated with Crazy Frog, Gummibär, or any other European dancecore song that risks becoming a ring-tone fad in this country much to the pain and suffering of the public at large. I’m under the impression that Canadian DJ Deadmau5 (Joel Anderson) is known for his stadium-dance fare, but this is definitely something much more entrancing; somewhat akin in flavor to the Atlas Sound song I posted a few months back, albeit with a more pronounced beat. The result is something that Massive Attack would compose after making passionate, passionate love.

Last night K and I went out to see Canadian tech-house producer Deadmau5 (pronounced “deadmouse”) play. Deadmau5 is another internet-fueled superstar, blowing up on Beatport last year to be their number 1-selling artist and now, to my amazement, selling out the relatively massive 9:30 club on a Monday night.

I took a video on my new phone but haven’t worked out how to get it off yet so here’s another one from YouTube. It’s very shaky but gives an idea of both the music and the truly spectacular light show. The production was the best I’ve seen at the 9:30 Club by far, with a super high-resolution digital screen at the front and 24 LED poles scattered around the stage, all sequenced to produce some fantastic visuals.

It was a lot of fun, and great to have a good dance, even if it has made today harder than it would otherwise have been. It did give rise to a few thoughts though:

1) Monday night, really? How far down in order of importance does DC have to be to get stuck with that? Or is it simply that he was so confident of his popularity here (he previously played here in March) that he knew DC would come out for him even on a Monday night?

2) Whatever happened to good electronic artists headlining parties? Now it seems as soon as a producer has any sort of success they go straight into “touring band” mode, playing gigs at concert venues rather than parties at clubs. I call lame.

3) Looking around at the (pretty young) crowd it’s amazing how many girls make no attempt at dancing other than rubbing their arses against their boyfriends groins. Bust out a little! Dance for you, not for them. I blame video clips and the insipid form of “sexiness” they promote.

4) Judging by audience reaction Deadmau5’s most popular track is by far his worst, a terrible, derivative uplifting house number that sounds like something Kylie Minogue would put out. Go figure.

Australians! – Deadmau5 is touring later this month as part of the Stereosonic Festival.

Here’s last Friday’s playlist – I did a full hour from 8p-9p, then rushed over to Congress for our show with Toby Roberts, Damian Mntle, Early Black & Static Session. A packed and wonderful Friday night full of music.

A certain magazine told me they wanted a review of Foreshore festival and then DIDN’T PUBLISH IT. Screw you B____ magazine. I went all the way to Canberra and stayed sober the whole time for this!

Luckily it was one of the best festivals ever! In fact, if you weren’t at Foreshore on Nov 28, there’s a good chance you picked the wrong festival. Hats off to Kicks Entertainment…

The venue is amazing; with views of Parliament House, Lake Burley Griffin and the war memorial, and set perfectly into hillsides that provide a perfect stage view from just about anywhere you are, and the lineup was outstanding; with most of the Stereosonic headliners, plus a heap more talent playing on the day . Somehow there were hardly any clashes, and when there were, it was so quick to get around the festival that it really was possible to check out every act on the wish list.

The weather was perfect all day, Sunny and warm with a breeze that occasionally picked up spray from water jet in the lake and blew drops of cool water across the ecstatic crowd, and I was pleasantly surprised at how awesome the foreshore crowd is. There certainly were a fair few shirtless ADFA guys, muzzas, and an overabundance of fluouro and matchy matchy groups; but the vibe was really nice and I didn’t see any Southern Cross tats, fights or agro, and no one groped me, trod on me or spilled my drink all day! Having only a couple of festivals a year the Canberra kids were so up for it, munting from midday, and dancing to every single act until close.

Crookers had the crowd right in the palm of their hands the whole time, heaving and stomping to Caspa’s remix of Where’s my money, and then losing it when they played the beginning of WARP then dropped in ACDC Thunderstruck (possibly the one track the aussie crowd would have liked to hear more!) Upon hearing Salmon dance I bailed to check out Dalhback, who played up to the sunshine with the perfect afternoon set of big bass driven house. By the end of it crowd had swelled to twice the size and everyone was super hyped to see Deadmau5, who didn’t really live up to the hype in my eyes, possibly because his techy set felt way too hard for the 3pm timeslot.

Overall the locals owned the day, with stand out sets from the highly skilled A-tonez, Chris Fraser & MC  Adam Zae, a live debut from The Only, and Bass Kleph; who followed a massive breaks set from Stantons with big  electrohouse – Vacation tracks ‘Spend my money’ and ‘Only a day’ both going down a treat with the excitable, mostly female crowd. At one point a tiny red Gstring came flying out of the front row and landed right on the decks – and the rockstar DJ didn’t miss a beat.

A highly jetlagged but still rippin Miss Kittin offered up a smashing live set with the Hacker, and her appreciative throng of fans didn’t seem to mind being greeted as ‘Melbourne’. Then Bloody Beetroots filled the tent to capacity, stealing the crowd from Aria Award winning headliners Empire of the Sun – who despite some sound problems (the sound was amazing for the rest of the festival!) put on a nice end to a big day, complete with costumes and dancing girls. It seemed people were more interested in going mental than swaying and having a sing along though, and the Beetroots made a moshpit out of the lawn stage, with an insanely energetic set punctuated by WARP, (and WARP 1977!) and Rifoki track “sperm donor”.

Unlike some festivals over the last few years where I’ve walked out resolving never to go again (a resolve that invariably melts away once a year has passed and another dream lineup is announced) I know I’ll be making the pilgrimage Foreshore an annual one, because I have just had one of the best days ever!

Like so many kids, Minneapolis youngster Charley Pugmire started playing the guitar in his early teen years. His first encounter with actual music production happened when he was fifteen, at a friend’s party. “I ended up staying in the basement during most of the party just fooling around with sounds, and I was hooked after that.”

Almost ten years later, there’s no trace of him plucking guitars. He now is 24 and his artist name changed to Tyler Hampton. His productions are supported by Pete Tong and Deadmau5 just to name a few. His sound is influenced by musicians like Rene Amesz, Fedde le Grand and D. Ramirez.

Hampton’s next release ‘Lil’ Mama’ is about to be released on PBR Recordings, the label of MC Flipside. Vocals are provided by King James. A release date is not known yet, but it will probably be before the end of this year. Luckily, the track can already be heard here:
