Do yourselves a favor and read the topic really slowly and savor every second of it. Yes Dead Space 2 has finally been officially announced for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Not much else has been hinted at. It is still Visceral, it’s still Isaac Clark, and it’s still the necromorph invasion. The best thing EA has to say about this announcement was: “Survival isn’t the only thing on Isaac’s mind in Dead Space 2 – this time, he calls the shots.”

DEAD SPACE By Jamie Selby Why do we play games? I found myself asking this question once I had playe

DEAD SPACE

By Jamie Selby

Why do we play games? I found myself asking this question once I had played this game for every last pixel I had to offer. And it really does ask the question, why do we play games? Some people play them for challenge, some people play for the adrenalin rush and some people just play for fun. I on the other hand, play for all three of them reasons. I play games because I want to be challenged, scared, happy and most importantly *immersed*.

Immersion is this games only selling point, from the second you turn the game on your immersed, the graphics are consistent even the scenarios when the story moves the graphics are the same, that is what keeps you immersed, the lack of any cut scenes, just game play. The closest thing you’re going to get to a cut scene is a Star Wars style hologram that emits from your space suit. It’s the immersion in this game that keeps you going, without emersion I probably wouldn’t have even finished it due to lack of interest in the story.

The story kicks off when a crew of 3 are sent to a space station to make some repairs after receiving a distress signal, but not all is as it seems because, they are great big monsters on board bent on your destruction.

The story is mainly about a religious cult called Unitology, this cult believes that the human race is extinct and no one realises it and so they release all these monsters that will eventually take over the world.

It’s a typical story with a typical ending, though typical as the ending is, it’s still awesome and it also points out that there may be a sequel in the not too distant future.

For the people that have played resident evil 4 or resident evil 5, you will find the controls easy to access mainly because they have been ripped straight out the game itself. I am not even kidding. The whole game is in a third person perspective; you walk with the right analogue stick and aim with the right, it all simple procedure. L1 to aim and R1 to shoot, you know the drill.

Everything in this game is done in real time from selecting your weapons to using a first aid kit to make your health bar go up. There is never any need to pause unless you need a cuppa tea. Also my main concern with the real time menu was what if you’re dying and you don’t get to your first aid in time. Well they solved that problem, all you have to do is press square and then you will be healed automatically.

The zero G (zero gravity) aspect of the game has to be the most interesting part of the game, the way to can zero jump to just about any part of a room is a amazing and innovative idea. This is also become more apparent when it comes to solving puzzles and stuff.

The graphics are also incredibly fantastic, though very dull at times; it never fails in creating a high level of atmosphere. This also boosted the horror factor, though I didn’t find the game scary. I did find that the game did make me jump out of my seat when I least expected it to. Plus that way the holograms are made in a kind of blurred blue also adds the amazing sense of depth and atmosphere this game is trying so hard to achieve.

Now even though I have been pretty much singing its praises so far, the game does have some major issues, which in my opinion ruined the game for me.

The designers clearly got lazy when it came to designing the enemies, each one pretty much like the last, a tall alien and you need to shoot its limbs of to kill it, that’s it. That is pretty much what it is like throughout the game. They would sometimes attempt at adding variety such as making the alien black there making it harder to kill, but you still only needed take it apart with your weapons. The boss battles were a real let down also, they ARE exactly the same, even though there is a little bit more to it each time, it just does not excuse the fact that you are still fighting the same enemy.

For a game that is held in such high regard by reviewers and even PLAY itself, this game has been such a big let down and I feel betrayed by the very people who I look up to.

The game isn’t even remotely challenging because:

A, Every enemy is like the last therefore you just end up using the same winning method over and over again.

B, by pressing R3 it tells you where to go, which completely abandons the go and explore feature we all love in games.

C, As if the game wasn’t easy enough to complete, you can also collect power nodes to make the game even easier.

I can only think of one more positive thing about this game, and that is the constant save locations, they appear like every 10-20mins. Plus every chapter take approx 1hr. This makes the game very accessible for short bursts of gaming, which how I played. I made a commitment to complete 1 chapter a day on this game no more and no less. And trust me it’s a great way to game and I wish all games were structured like this.

It also took me 11:48:50 to complete the game.

My verdict? Well put it this way, if you came up to me and asked me to recommend a survival horror game that amazing graphics and immersive game play I would without a doubt recommend Resident Evil 5 & 4, seeming as that is where the idea for this game came from and Capcom did a better job also.

7/10: Lack of variety in the game left only the story and graphics to keep the game standing on its own two feet.

So I’ve been running missions lately to improve my standing in our Alliance’s area of in

So I’ve been running missions lately to improve my standing in our Alliance’s area of influence. Since I’m Gallente, the Caldari agents didn’t like me too much, so I shifted one jump over and have been wooing the Minmatars. Basically, I’m only doing this because it seems that many of our pilots who are veterans, when they need cash, are not mining – they are running high level missions. So I’m trying to unlock my first level 2 agent.

I got to my first Minmatar storyline mission and was excited until I saw that it raised my standings all of maybe .2 total. And I need about 6 times that to open up the level 2 agent. Which is alot of missions. But hey, I’m dedicated, and I have nothing else to do until my interceptor training finishes up next weekend, so why not?

I pulled one about retrieving some tribal history lists, which was a cool touch, and trotted out the Rhino to bull my way through it. Which I did in short order. The second and final “room” of the mission had some nice roids in it though – including eight nice gorgeous Pyroxeres rocks, each with about 40k units in them. This is a rare treat – I’ve been trying to get some industry going, but my blueprints call for Noxium, which I would have to buy…but if I could land these little heartbreakers… A rough calculation, which I stink at so it may be wrong, gave me a ballpark figure of 1200 Nox per roid, a little under 10k total. That would definetely do the trick for my initial run. I warped one system over to home, grabbed my Retriever and headed for the acceleration gate – 35 km away from the deadspace entry point. Oi. I grabbed a magazine.

Sometime later, I finally hit the gate, clicked the magical button, and got an error message.

This Acceleration Gate is not equipped to handle your vessel. Only the following ship types are allowed:

Frigates

Cruisers

Rookie Ships

Destroyers

Oh no….while I could kit the Vexor to mine almost as much per minute as the Retriever, even with T2 cargoholds, I couldn’t get in more than 1100 m3 per run. Getting to station was easy, but every time I came back in I would have to cross the 35km to the gate in a cruiser. Afterburner would help, but in deadspace, apparently you cannot microwarpdrive activate. So it would take me hours to grab just the Pyro, even if I ignored everything else in there.

So I enlisted a friend, and we got everything together, ready for the monotony of it all! And the system crashed. Twenty minute wait. I went back to the magazine.

Ah, good, we’re back on! I warped in, started mining, ignored the CCP traffice advisory spam….and got that great notice about the system coming down in 5 minutes. And I had half a can full already. I thought I was going to cry or to punch someone. Oosh. So I load up what I can and go sliding into dock with a few seconds to spare. Another twenty minutes wait, but I’m already nearly an hour past bedtime, and its my turn to get the kids up for school. I try it, but I’m asleep on the board within 10 minutes. Glumly, with an imaginary phantasmic trumpet playing taps over my shoulder, I stumble up the stairs for bed.

::sigh:: My lovely Pyroxeres, one day, one day soon, I will come for you, and it will be worth the wait. Until then sweety, keep rockin’.

(Ha! Get it? An asteroid…rock-ing? OMG I’m so pathetic. I bet the Pyro won’t even go back out with me now)…

There is nothing casual about the way my spouse plays Scrabble. She stands above the steaming corpse

There is nothing casual about the way my spouse plays Scrabble. She stands above the steaming corpses of her opponents and nods graciously at their efforts, futile as they may be. She checks her stats and her turns every day, she works on strategies and learns new ways of winning. She doesn’t cheat, and takes the ethics of the game seriously. The very thought of a “hardcore” fifteen year old gamer looking down on her and calling her skills “casual” is offensive.

I’ve seen “hardcore” players. Their skills seem to entail jumping a lot, strafing side to side and memorizing maps so they can get a slight advantage over the other on hundred online gamers that play exactly like them. I would like to see them raise children, run a household, have a full time job and maintain their leaderboard status.

When my wife started playing Mass Effect she had a bit of trouble transitioning to the vastly different control scheme on the Xbox 360, but so did I. The difference between mouse aiming and using the control stick is enormous and takes a lot of getting used to. In short order she was solving puzzles and knocking off robots with no issues. The story is compelling and helped her over the parts that were not natural to the way she plays games. This transition is not difficult, and the key was the quality. Quality drives people past uncomfortability and unfamiliarity.

When I have two hours to spare, I will play Half Life or Bioshock, when I have twenty minutes to spare I will play Peggle or Plants VS. Zombies. What kind of gamer does that make me? I enjoy Elite Beat Agents as much as I enjoy Dead Space. I enjoy games without classification. My entertainment money is spent on games first before movies, before recreational books and sometimes clothing to my own detriment.

I declare the gaming culture war over. Publishers, you should no longer market game genres specifically to me to my spouse or to my children. Chances are you will be wrong and miss your targets. Sell me a good game that is fun, interesting and challenging. If I like it I will probably purchase it. If I really like it, I will recommend it. If I love it, you will hear about it in a blog or on Facebook. Stop artificially creating gaming demographics and start creating gaming evangelists. They will sing your praises and pass their passions on to their children.

1. Sam Fishers SC-20k Rifle

This rifle is brilliant. Not only can you go full auto rambo style with it but you can go sneaky sneaky and take them out from a decent range with the sniper, or, if your feeling rather charitable you can use the launcher to fire such lovely things like sticky shockers, gas grenades and sticky cameras which allow the player to knock out the enemy. It’s not clear whether or not the gun will be featured in the new Splinter Cell: Conviction. But without it the game will not be the same.

2. XR-005 Hailstorm

This gun was created by those geniuses in Insomniac and features in one of the PS3’s first flagship games Resistance: Fall of Man. At first looks it looks like a run of the mill alien rapid firing gun. But the thing about Insomniac is that they always create a genius twist to their weapons through the secondary fire mode. And this gun is no different, the secondary fire uses an entire clip that automatically targets any Chimera in range and unloads on them. Very useful if you want to take out alot of enemies from the safety of cover.

3.Air Fuel RPG

This weapon is acquired in Mercenaries 2. It is without doubt the most devastating hanheld weapon in the game. With the ability to take out a tank and even small buildings with one round. A round from this weapon not only causes initial blast damage but also releases a fuel cloud which when ignited creates a massive fire ball. In a game which is full of explosions it takes a lot to impress.

4. Line Gun

The Line Cutter, or the IM-822 Handheld Ore Cutter Line Gun to give it’s correct name. From EA’s horror masterpiece Dead space. The thing about Dead Space is that there is only one weapon in the game that was designed to be a weapon. The majority of the weapons are mining tools, which is lucky considering that the mining tools are quite useful at dismembering the ghoulish creatures who wish nothing more then to kill poor old Issac. The line cutter is a brilliant weapon because the rounds of this weapon have the power to cut a beastie in two:

5. Plasmids

These plasmids are what make Bioshock so special. Some plasmids may seem like run of the mill, electrocute, freeze and incinerate but the way that these plasmids can be used make the game a whole lot better. Be it by setting a splicer on fire, waiting for them to jump in a puddle of water then electrocuting them or by freezeing them then using the shotgun to shatter them into a thousand tiny pieces. My favourite tactic was placing a cyclone trap and then a target dummy. Any splicers around would go and attack the dummy and get thrown into the air by the trap… genius!

6. Experimental MIRV

Quite possibly the most destructive handheld weapon in any game ever. Acquired in Fallout 3 if you complete the Keller Family Refuge Unmarked quest it has the ability to fire 8 mini nukes at once. Thats the power of 8 Fatman launchers all at once. At first this weapon will probably cause you more damage then what you are aiming at but when you get used to it. There is nothing in the wasteland that could stand against you.

DEAD SPACE Wii bound

Recently EA has announced a Wii version of Dead Space is coming soon, and I can’t help to get excited about this. During the last few months of last year, I had to watch good games like Mirrors Edge, Prince of Persia, and Dead Space fly passed Wii and go to Xbox 360 and PS3. But now Wii is getting a piece of that pie.

Dead Space is a horror game which is often compared to Resident Evil 4, which means Wii now has something that will fill in for the lack of Resident Evil 5. Hopefully Wii will get Mirrors Edge too.

Nintendo @ GDC

President of Nintendo Satoru Iwata will deliver the keynote at GDC (Game Developers Conference), which will be on “discovering new development opportunities.” Its not really known what he’s really going to talk about, but there are some rumors that it maybe about the coming Nintendo DSi. Although I’m hoping on some kind of Wii update; maybe a new channel, or an answer to the Wii space problem.

(The next WII Week update will be on Friday)

Lee gave you a review for the game. Josh told you about the graphic novel. So what about the movie that was released on Blu-Ray and DVD? Flip over to the other side to find out more.

Deadspace: Downfall is the second of a three part story. Taking place right before the story in the game, the movie tells the story of what happens on the USG Ishimura after the planet-side incidents of the mining colony. The story follows Alissa Vincent, Chief Security Officer on the Ishimura, as she does whatever necessary to survive and help those she can. Just like the game, a lot of work was put into the lighting and audio to create the perfect mood of horror. The movie also features excellent artwork and some really cool fight scenes. The story line of the movie fits in perfectly with the game and comics and adds to the overall survival story of the people involved with the USG Ishimura.

Special features on the DVD and the Blu-Ray include a deleted scene, a couple of trailers, and Easter Egg cheat codes for the game. Exclusive to the Blu-Ray are the original soundtrack and photo galleries. While the visuals are much better on Blu-Ray, this movie is great no matter how you watch it. So is it worth a buy? If you’re a fan of the game and/or the comics, go buy it. It’s worth the money to complete the story. If you didn’t like either, but you’re a fan of survival horror flicks, rent it and see if you like it. Otherwise, this might be a movie for you to skip.

The following is a series of emails between Gregor and myself discussing Dead Space. [WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS]

Eugene says:

I played like 6 hours of Dead Space yesterday. I’m really enjoying the game. Sure, the store is dumb, and necromorphs dropping cash money and plasma packets is lame, but I can get over those plot conveniences. I ended my night last night by blowing up the huge boss in the zero g tube in horticulture. That chapter was kind of annoying, what with all the running back and forth to blow up the necromorphs who had flatulent backsides.

I love the zero g launching (it can get confusing!). And thank god for stasis cheats, or I’d have died a lot more.

My favorite gun is one I downloaded…it’s called the Big Force Gun. I’ve powered it up a bit. At close range it just shatters the necros into pieces, though it’s useless at long range.

It is tough to choose what gear to use your power nodes on, that is for sure. I wish there were a few more laying around to make it a bit easier. Heck, I even used a cheat to get 10 extra nodes and still wish I had some more.

The little things I enjoy are the vid screen when your buddies talk to you and the video logs. It’s cool how they are just a mini green screen in front of you and you can still interact w/ the main game while they play. It’s also jarring sometimes when they first call you up…the static from the initial comlink sounds disturbingly (I’m sure this is intentional) like a monster sneaking up behind you.

It’s also freaky how the necros appear out of nowhere. My default maneuver in shooters is to walk backwards while strafing and shooting baddies coming at me…but often in DS they are right behind me too! Yikes!

Gregor says:

A powered up Force Gun would be pretty unstoppable, at least at close range. I used the Line Gun most of the time, after noding it up all the way. But I liked having the Force Gun as my readied gun, most of the time. So if something jumped out right next to me, I could demolish it without worrying too much about aiming — or wasting my line racks.

The Contact Beam and Pulse Rifle were useless to me. And I never even tried the Ripper, though I heard it’s fun.

How did you like the Regenerator guy in Chapter 5? Personally, I hated him, at least while I was in the pitch black lab where I had to kill the other guys, too, before Kendra could unlock the door. The cryogenics lab was more fun. But I just didn’t like that there’s a monster that’s indestructable, by normal measures. It changes the game’s tacit agreement with the player: monsters get to scare you, and you get to kill them. Then again, that was probably the point, letting you know that there are no hard and fast rules, so you always have to be worried. I know a lot of people love him.

I actually enjoyed the hydroponics area, if only because it was a change from fetching items. I guess fetching noxious fart monsters isn’t really any different, but it changed how I played, for some reason. I decided not to use the right stick to clue me in on where to go next (which I did compulsively the rest of the game). Instead, I just explored every inch of that level to find the guys. It was like hide and seek. There are are no other levels like that though, so you’re safe in that regard.

The game’s interface — the pop-up with the menus, videos, and map — really is fantastic. I hope other games start to use something similar, so you don’t always have to have a HUD onscreen. I also like that time doesn’t stop when you’re browsing that stuff, so you feel just a bit of tension, in case something jumps out at you.

The zero-g sections are the best. I could’ve spent most of the game in zero-g.

And yeah, I did the stasis cheat all the time. I wasn’t above giving myself extra oxygen, too.

Node management is tough. I spent every spare cent on nodes, even if it meant having to use the plasma cutter more than I wanted, to conserve my other ammo and keep me from buying any.

Eugene says:

I’m glad you mentioned the indestructible monster! I almost brought that up in my email to you. It pissed me off. I mean, I had already largely suspending my disbelief for this game, but I have liked how the necros are created by feeding off dead persons flesh, or how the huge one is using the hydroponics lab to grow. But one thing that always bothers me about these types of games is how they throw out the law of conservation of mass…If I blew that creature’s arms and legs off, he cannot regenerate new limbs w/o a significant amount of “new” (well dead) flesh to regenerate new ones. Now, if he was crawling around reattaching the ones I blew off, that might be ok. But I don’t think he was. If he’d done that, it woulda been cool if you had to obliterate him, or separate his limbs into different rooms, or burn him. Anything but spontaneous regeneration w/o new organic inputs. That always irked me about Res Evil 4…one of the bad guys (if you played it, you’ll remember), was this Napoleonic little freakshow. He then grew (like Apache Chief from Superfriends) into a 50 foot monster out of a human body. Now, if these games were about magic, I’d give it to them, but they try to be science-based. The necromorphs are an alien race, as far as I can tell, not a magical faerie species.

Now, the cryogenic freezing of his ass was a cool solution, I’ll admit, but I’m pissed I didn’t get to shatter him. I’m assuming he shows up again later….

The pulse rifle was useful on the boss, that’s about it. It probably makes sense to power up the plasma cutter, since the ammo’s so readily available, but it just gets boring.

I like the mines on the Line Gun, but it’s too slow for me and the ammo is pretty darn scarce.. I used the saw gun and found it confusing and not to my liking. I don’t even have the contact beam yet.

I really enjoyed that one of the gas bags was hiding underneath the feeding platform in the hyrdroponics area, and that you had to activate the food-jug lift, stasis, look down and shoot the guy. I stood there for a minute and kept loading food jugs before I realized there was a dude down there! I was like, “Pretty sneaky sis!”

Oh, and the shoot the asteroids mini-game….stupid.

Gregor says:

[Eugene said]: But one thing that always bothers me about these types of games is how they throw out the law of conservation of mass.

Thank you! That bugged me about him, too.

[Eugene said]: I really enjoyed that one of the gas bags was hiding underneath the feeding platform in the hydroponics area

That was cool. Kathy actually spotted him, early on in that level. God knows how long I would been hunting him, otherwise.

[Eugene said]: Oh, and the shoot the asteroids mini-game….stupid.

Ugh. I hate when games add mini-games that are requirements to go onward. A lot of people have gotten stuck at that part, because the skills you need to get past it have nothing to do with the rest of the game. Okami had some mini-games that actually prompted us to quit it. We just got sick of fishing and other crap

Eugene says:

On Dead Space, I watched Yahtzee’s review last night. I agreed w/ it to a degree, but I don’t think the game was trying to be all that original, and I clearly enjoyed it more than he. I do agree w/ him that unsympathetic, robot characters, do not a good game make. By not having Isaac speak, we don’t give that much of a shit about his existence. He’s just a suited up killing machine. Upon reflection, how great would it have been to have Isaac be scared shitless (as any normal person would have been), and have him freaking out, hiding in corners during cut scenes. I mean, the non-reaction when faced w/ bloody people smashing their heads into walls was too little, not too much. I don’t know why games do things like this–create a cardboard character. Resistance’s main character is the same, no talking. Developers must think they are being creative and original by doing this, when it really just makes the game unemotional (a mistake in my view). It’s a nice conceit for a one hour game, but not for the development of a franchise. I mean, wasn’t the main character the one of the best parts of Uncharted, Ratchet, MGS, etc? Why make a game w/ a character people don’t care about? Big mistake.

Eugene says:

Yes, finished Dead Space. I enjoyed that game for what it was. Sure, I had my quibbles (how could anyone mistake these necromorphs and their hive-mind for “God”?!?!?! What was the chick I went into the mission with doing stealing the Marker…that made no sense when she saw the clear results of rapid necromorph infestation (imagine if these things spread to more ships). And why did I have to drag that dumb Marker all over in the anti-climactic final stage?). Then the big, dumb, stupid, monstrous last boss. But danged if I didn’t love just being creeped out!

Gregor says:

I totally agree with your assessment of Dead Space. The religious aspect was silly, the plot twist of my traitorous crewmate was stupid, and the marker dragging made no sense. But I really liked it for what it was, too. I beat the final boss on my second try, using nothing but the plasma cutter. (I died the first time when he grabbed me and ate me.)

I started this game yesterday after playing a demo and reading/hearing all the hype about it. If you’re curious, it’s a lot like Half-Life. That’s right. It’s not actually “scary”. Yea, the idea is to dismember your opponents, however, putting a bunch of rounds in their torso seems to do the trick as well. The game play (story wise) is so familiar to HL and HL2 that I kept telling the game to just call me Gordon and get it over with. The missions are a lot of “go here, collect this junk, go back, get through door, activate this, next level, rinse repeat. Hmm.. One cool feature is the ability to upgrade your gear *sigh*. I think every game has this now, but this is a “FPS” with it. What they don’t tell you is that, the things you need to upgrade your gear are also used to open doors for really cool stuff. Options, options. You can buy the upgrade parts from the store (HA) for a nominal price, of course. Yes, it has a store. Imagine being on a space ship that’s slowly crashing into a planet, the engines have failed, everything is jammed up and needs repairs/reboots, and there are fully functional stores available!! Seems like the priorities of the dead crew were a little off… Anyway, you start out with a very limited inventory space, so you’ll need to upgrade that. You end up collecting so much junk along the way that it’s almost a necessity. There are so many things you can upgrade that it’s almost a pain to do so. The upgrades follow along a “tree” really similar to a flow chart. You can’t boost one thing unless you’ve put one of your valuable parts into an empty slot first. Bleh!! Overall, the game isn’t bad. It seems a little slow paced and even on normal difficulty, the mobs are very happy to die or not show up at all.

Dead Space

I give it a 8 out of 10.

Reasons: Half-Life clone of a game, slow paced action, bad utilization of upgrades feature.

Dead Space is a 2008 comic book prequel to the movie Dead Space: Downfall. The video game Dead Space continues where the movie left the viewer. It is published by Image Comics and is written by Antony Johnston (who also wrote the game’s dialogue), with art by Ben Templesmith. An animated version of it (really just the comic’s images with the text replaced by a voice cast) was available to download via Xbox Live, PSN and various game review sites such as Gametrailers.com in summer 2008.

In the distant future, humanity has colonized worlds beyond Earth’s solar system. Two-hundred years prior, a man named Michael Altman discovered an artifact of unknown origin (known as “the marker”) which led him to begin a new religion – Unitology – that supposedly taught the truth about human existence. Altman was later killed, allegedly by the government, in an attempt to silence the truth – however, the veracity of this account has yet to be confirmed. In present time, a new marker has been discovered on another colony and strange things have been happening amongst the colonists. The comics start off with Neumann making a video log about what happens in the comic, but the comic drifts away from Neumann’s point of view occasionally and feature events that Neumann is not present at.

A disturbingly horrific deep-space adventure game that offers a very unique and memorable dark experience to gamers, leaving you want to explore everything dead space has to offer.

Overall Score 9.1

Gameplay 9.0

Dead Space is a third-person shooter game that took place in deep space where nobody is there to help you. The main character in this game is Isaac Clarke, an engineer assigned to repair Deep Space Mining Ship, the USG Ishimura. Something has gone horribly wrong when Isaac landed on Ishimura. The ship is infested with numerous of horrifying monsters called Necromorphs. You have to battle your way through these Necromorphs in order to unfold the story piece by piece.

The most interesting part about this game is that, you are out there alone in a Necromorph infested ship where they look for every opportunity to kill you when you least suspected and the best friend you have with you is the guns you are holding with scarce sources of ammo. The atmosphere of Deadspace is astonishingly creepy, there are lots of dark places that you need to go through hoping that you will not get ambushed by Necromorphs and few Ishimura survivors who have lost their mind and do something more disturbing than Necromorphs. The unexpected surprise element in Dead Space will draw you to the front edge of your seat and makes you terrified to even open the doors that lead you to undiscovered area.

As for the player control aspect, the PC version of Dead Space does not offer any flexibility in maneuvering Isaac because you can’t use the arrow key and use “WSAD” key instead.

Dead Space has another interesting system that lets you upgrade your weapon at the cost of money dropped by Necromorphs, it gives you a cafeteria-style menu choice where you can be specialized on a weapons or increasing your health to make you survive longer.

Graphic 9.5

The blood gushed out from the Necromorphs limbs that you cut using your specialized gun gives you the sense of how much realistic the graphic shows. The lighting in the Dead Space is very well designed that it creates a creepy atmosphere. The fact that every action/movements Isaac and Necromorphs executed are very smooth, which creates moments of adrenaline during the battle and turns into a big relief after all monsters are killed.

Dead Space offers innovative menu-view screen where the menu will be displayed in a non-full screen mode in front of Isaac and you can walk or run around the places while you still on the menu screen mode. This is very good to be aware of your surrounding in case a Necromorph jumps at you out of nowhere. The only drawbacks on the menu screen is that the text messages displayed are too small to be read.

Dead Space also introduce Zero-G gravity in some area as you play through the game. Zero-G gravity area do not have functional gravity, it allows Isaac to jump and land even on the surface above Isaac’s head using his magnetic boots. Suddenly the view turns 360 degrees, which very challenging at first but once you get the hang of it, it becomes very enjoyable experience as you leap from the floor to the ceiling. Zero-G gravity area gives you a breathtaking view from rainfall of asteroids to corpses spin serenely in the middle of zero-g gravity.

Sound 9.5

Dead Space has done flawlessly in creating the sound in every aspect of the game. As you walk through the corridors or in a big rooms, you constantly hear footsteps of Necromorphs above the ceiling or their hissing sounds behind the wall beside you. You know that you are never be safe anywhere in Ishimura when you constantly hear Necromorphs sound somewhere hiding and stalking you.

The sound of a gun you shot and the limbs separated from Necromorphs body gives you the sense of satisfaction and wicked at the same time. The most impressive part of the audio takes place in Zero-G gravity, any sound made outside Isaac helmet are muffled and barely audible from the gunshot you made to the screeching voice of Necromorphs are very well amplified.

Replay value 8.5

After you’ve completed the game, harder difficulties are unlocked to give you challenge you even further. The weapon customization upgrade Dead Space provided allows you to try focus and develop your proficiency over different types of weapon available. Each weapon provided gives you different experience as to how you kill the Necromorphs. Given the sheer depth of item upgrades and the harder difficulties should be good enough to keep you occupied for a long time. Dead Space is a fantastic game that shouldn’t be missed by players who thirst for horror games.

I started playing dead space based on a couple reviews I downloaded from several different pod casts

I started playing dead space based on a couple reviews I downloaded from several different pod casts. I usually don’t rush out and buy something just because, someone says its good but, I’m glad that I did.

The first minutes of this game really blew me away. The premise of the game is centered around the main character Isaac Clark, an engineer, who should not have woke up for work this morning. The Uss Ishimura lost communication with everyone and Isaac and his team is responsible for the repairing the communication failure. That’s where the story gets very interesting. The problem is bigger than anything that the team has ever encounter.

Dead Space is a great mix of action with a unique spin on character development. You have to collect Power Node to upgrade you weapons and Rig (armor). These can be obtained by purchase ( through the in-game store) or by finding them in the game. Also, you can buy new weapons via the store. Lots of the action revolves around walking around and getting the crap scared out of you while trying to stay alive. Gforce missions are really fun. Some of the jobs that Isacc must complete include repairing the outside structure, and eliminating nuclear waste.

This is my impression about a few of the key points in Dead Space. This game could be a serious contender for game of the year. Enjoy a few videos I found on the net.

Who would have expected it? My first red ring was when the Halo 3 beta started and I got my console

Who would have expected it? My first red ring was when the Halo 3 beta started and I got my console back on the last day. Then a few weeks back, the day before DeadSpace came out it happened again. Last Friday I got my 360 back and spent the weekend playing DeadSpace and just a little Fable2. I managed to beat DeadSpace twice but its not like I was done. I have 2 achievements left, but this morning my game ended as soon as it loaded my save with a frozen screen covered in red. I was liked “WTF”? I shut it off, turn it back on. Red Ring AGAIN!

So I did everything Microsoft Max on 18004MYXBOX told me to do. I unplugged the power cable, removed the harddrive, plugged it back in, still red ringed. I got a CSR (lol my own job title) on the line and as they were talking to me I managed to get it to boot but it will NOT load a game without freezing now if its on disc. DAMMIT IT ALL! At least Castle Crashers works cause its on the Hardrive. Since i still have my box from before considering it was only just last FRIDAY! They are sending me the label by email, I just have to print it, and tape it over the other one and follow all those other bullshit procedures. OH LOOK! just got the label in the email now.. That was fast. Now when I get home I have to box up my 360 AGAIN and I will most likely miss out on Gears2 not to mention that acheivement on Halo 3 I was going to try for that is on the 7′th day of a month. Seems my luck is just shit isn’t it? I don’t have my gaming rig or I would have already done a post on Farcry 2 and Fallout 3 already. I may have that this weekend though if I’m lucky. Well regardless this blows entirely so all I am left with is Anime at the moment. So i might watch Last Exile.. Oh and I have DeadSpace: Downfall to watch.

EA is banking on the fact that DeadSpace is going to rock everyone’s socks off, so they are releasing the ULTRA LIMITED EDITION, which can only be purchased from their online store (Sorry GameStop, looks like you have to sit out this round). The price tag for this sure to be collector’s item is $150. Now I don’t know about most gamers out there, but it would appear that that is a pretty hefty price tag, unless of course you’re getting say a guitar, drumset, and a mic, but that’s just me. I’m sure you are as curious as I am about what could cost all that hard earned cash, well he’s the details on what you get in the box:

* The Dead Space game
* Special Ultra Limited Edition packaging
* Dead Space Downfall Animated Movie (DVD)
* Bonus content DVD
* Exclusive lithograph art
* 97-pg Dead Space art book written and illustrated by the development team
* 160-pg Graphic novel
* Ishimura crew patch

Now with all these goodies, well they’re goodies if you are an uber gamer or one who just has to have every little thing associated to a hyped up game, it will be an interesting thing to see. I personally don’t think you’ll find me with an order for this set, but if you feel the need I won’t stop you from gaining this mammoth.

When I arrived in Seattle, I basically dropped off my bags and went straight to the Washington State Convention Center for PAX08.

I grabbed my badge and immediately got a pretty overwhelmed by the amount of people around. It was packed!! I went straight to the bathroom, and who do I run into? None other than my good friend Trina from GamingAngels. It was a huge relief to find someone I knew in that massive crowd. (Update: Attendance for PAX reached 58,500) Along with and a couple other journalists, we headed over to the EA booth for a some press demos.

We started out with one of my show favorites, Mirror’s Edge. This game features a female lead (w00t!), who isn’t over-sexualized or a super-hero. Hurray EA! It looks awesome, I can’t wait to pick it up! Next we went over to the DeadSpace booth. DeadSpace already looks like an amazing game. One even on the level of Gears of War and/or Bioshock. It’s crazy gravity defying environments made me a little nauseous though! I think this one is going to be a good candidate for scooping up lots of awards this year. Finally, we walked over to the Need for Speed: Undercover area. This was an awesome display! We got to sit in this car-like seat and I was able to kick some racing butt!! Not only am I going to have to get this one, but I’ll have to buy the Xbox 360 Racing Wheelto boot. My wallet is going to hate me this holiday season.

In addition to walking the floor, I went to an interesting panel on Day 1. The panel was the “Girls and Games: The Growing Role of Women in the Game Industry.” It featured Jo Clowes (Microsoft), Annie Carlson (Obsidian), Marlo Huang (Liquid Advertising) and Linsey Murdock (ArenaNet). Our friends at GamingAngels live-blogged the whole thing, check it out here. I thought it was incredibly interesting having a marketing woman on the panel, since many female gamers have issues with how games are marketed, especially towards women. It definitely brought an great dynamic to the conversation. There was a great turn-out for this panel, especially considering it was up against the keynote speaker, Ken Levine. Seems like we’re heading in the right direction!

More about PAX08 in my next post, PAX Day 2…
