Online banking is great, I can log in and check my account, make payments without writing checks or

Online banking is great, I can log in and check my account, make payments without writing checks or going to the bank etc… that’s awesome … But if ever you need to speak to a “human” (I use quotation marks not because I am NOT referring to the homo sapiens but rather some of the people that work at the bank are sometimes too dumb to be considered as part of our race, as you will see shortly)…

So I logged in and saw a debit which I could not identify (of only 49$, but still… I am referring to my commercial bank account) and picked up the phone and left a message for my account manager. 24 hrs later I get a call from her and she tells me she doesn’t know… (it took her 24hrs to figure that out?) and that I need to send a fax to another woman at the bank (in the SAME building) so she can call me back and give me the details of the transaction. Yes, yes, you read correctly: my commercial bank account manager at a bank (in downtown Montreal), is asking me to send a fax, to her colleague, who works 2 floors down from her, so that person can call me to tell me why I have an unauthorized debit in my account. Ok… so I keep my cool, and I write the fax: “Dear so-and-so, please call me I would like to ask a question about a debit on Nov 16, etc…”.

A few hours later that day, (still no call) I end up going at the bank to make some deposits, and the cashier talks to the person in question who recognizes me:

Bank woman- “Mr. Chamy, are you the one who sent me the fax earlier today?”

Anthony – “Yes, that’s me “

I have a big smile on my face since I realize that the issue will most likely be resolved in the next 30 seconds. I continue:

Anthony – “I wanted to identify this debit, but first, I wanted to know, is there no way for my bank account manager to reach you? I don’t understand why she called me and asked me to send you a fax for you to call me, I mean, it is… (and I was going to say ridiculous but I held back)…

Bank woman – “Well of course, Mr. Chamy, I mean, she is on another floor, she works in another department!”

…

My smile slowly fades away…

…

What I would have liked to say at this moment is: “You mean to tell me that it is simpler for her to pick up the phone, call her client (me), then have the client send you a fax asking you to have you call them back, and then you pick up the phone and call – instead of having her just contact you (by phone, e-mail, or just walk down 2 floors)?! You work in the same building for crying out loud! Are you serious? What freakin’ planet do we live on here? You guys are a major bank, how can you possible function properly this way? I am at a loss for words, this is insulting my intelligence…”

But I end up holding myself back (I assume thanks to Daniel Goleman’s book: Emotional Intelligence) since I know that to upset the ladies that deposit your company cheques must not be a good thing and I just swallow my anger and respond very calmly (with a new and improved smile of course):

Anthony – “Ah ok, well… what is that debit anyway, I did not authorize it so I’d like to know what it is”…

Bank woman – “Ah well yes, I was going to call you Mr. Chamy, to tell you that I do not know what this debit transaction is, you will have to talk to your account manager.”

My smile quickly disappears for good…

…

At this point I just squeezed my mouth shut so as not to scream any profanities, and walked away…

To be continued…

Most often you get a debit card from your bank and it also carries a “Mastercard” or

Most often you get a debit card from your bank and it also carries a “Mastercard” or “Visa” logo. Except when you are at a bank ATM, it is a good idea to press or use the “credit” function of your card for several reasons. When you use it as a debit at retailers it is a “cash” transaction and your money will be immediately taken out of your account. If your information is received by an identity thief, he/she then has the ability to take out all of the money in your checking, anything attached to it like a savings account and any line of credit that is set up. Even if you catch the theft within a day or two, the money is gone and you have to fight to get it back. With a credit card there is a “float” where you can spend money before you have to pay it, so if there is theft you can dispute the charge or charges before any money has been removed from your account. There are protections in either case- if reported in time your liability will usually only be $50, depending upon your bank. But it makes more sense to press the charge button when using your debit/charge card, particularly with the holidays coming and stores getting busier. An added bonus is if you don’t have much of a credit history, using the credit function on the debit card from a major bank, will be reported on your credit report as a credit transaction, and making required payments on a monthly basis will help you establish good credit.

October 25th, 2009 at 1:30 am like a thief in the night my account with familyandfriends financial was canceled for no reason.

After 3,000 emails and numerous ads running without notice the plug was pulled. No communications no nothing and that is why I am here to tell you that Family and Friends Financial is a fraud they even changed their log in name from www.familyandfriends.com to something else. See it in the search engine results. The links that they gave me to advertise don’t even exist anymore imagine that. Imagine trying to advertise your links on an advertising site that checks the links and tell you that those links aren’t working at 1:30am in the morning. No one writes you and no one calls that just the kind of things you have to deal with. They can write you about a campaign ( the complete protection plan) that doesn’t have it’s website up and running. But tell you that they don’t exist anymore that’s just too much trouble.

Let’s face it there is no opportunity at. I don’t even think they are a real company. Please do not sign up with them or you will get burned.

Watch for this name because I believe he is a scam artist along with some others.

The domains with family and friends has been eliminated and is up for sale at whois.com. So why create this domain in the first place and you can now find them operating as merchantcircle.com, fastfuneasyfree.com and a whole host of other names.

Here are 4 key things to look for:

1. Mangus Sublett, ceo and

2. the test you must take to qualify and all

3. the overview of credit when you get to the site. It is just a sad time wasting trick.

4. You get websites that can be terminated before you start.

I thought it was odd when they said, “ we are terminating you for spamming and I said, “I haven’t even started to advertise yet so how can that be.”

Watch out they got slick advertising and I bought it hook line and sinker and boy did I do some sinking.

5. Watch for this logo

If you are wondering what facecard is, let me tell you that it is the answer for parents to teach their college going children financial responsibility. Facecard is like an ‘allowance’ in which parents or friends can deposit money that a student can use anywhere mastercard is accepted. It is a prepaid card introduced by MetaBank in 2008. The idea behind introducing this card is to establish an alternative to a credit or debit card especially for students.

Parents can load cash to the student facecard account using their mobile phone or computers. They have the authority to monitor where the student is spending the money, which gives them a greater control. Also, if the child shows irresponsible spending behavior, the parents can have a chance to teach their child how to utilize credit in a better way. Moreover, the card has discounts known as prewards for saving on purchases. Prewards work something like this – students receive preward offers in their account, which they can accept or reject at their free will. Suppose the offer suggests a 3$ discount on sandwich. If the sandwich costs $6, only $3 will be deducted when the student uses the card.

Last month, Facecard, in association with Facebook, launched an application, which links both of them. This application, also known as facecard, can be downloaded directly. It promotes money transfers on facecard through facebook. You can transfer money in three ways, either by sending ‘money messages’ or transferring money to the another Facebook user’s wishlist or by gifting it using the ‘thinking of you’ option.

Facecard charges $5 for signing up and $3 as a monthly account maintenance fees. The monthly maintenance fees can be waived off on two occasions – if you load paycheck through direct deposit or spend minimum $100 a month using the facecard. The prewards and other features make facecard a better utility than the free checking account. The facecard seems to have a good future and remarkable uniqueness among other cards.

Ever felt like ripping a little cash off credit card companies for all the mess that they have created in your life? Well, here’s how you can do it. Making your credit card payment smartly can serve the dual purpose of receiving rewards from credit card providers as well as improving your credit score.

Set up a direct debit

Through a direct debit, a credit card company can take away a variable sum, which reduces your principal. If you ask your credit card company to deduct the full monthly payment, instead of taking a partial amount, you can save a substantial amount. Once you do this, your credit card transforms into a debit card, which benefits you on every transaction. Credit card companies charge the retailer certain amount of fees each time a customer uses a card. The proceeds turn into cashback rewards, which eventually go into your pocket.

In some cases, the credit card companies take away ‘the payment in full’ option, which restricts you to a certain payment every month. According to rules, they have to provide you with the full payment option when you sign up an account. So, if at all you come across such a case wherein the company has hidden the full payment information, you can mention it separately and then call up the company to confirm whether they have taken the due notice of the issue or no.

Moreover, you can derive additional benefits from credit card companies through stoozing or getting freebies. In stoozing, you can borrow credit from a credit card company that offers zero percent interest rate for a certain period of time (for ex. Six months or one year). Then, you can deposit this borrowed amount in a high interest rate account to reap the maximum benefits. Also, regularly using your credit card will entitle you for freebies such a electronics or free flight tickets.

It’s that time again. That wonderful time where I angst about people who need to really be put to sleep. (perhaps this is a harsh statement?)

Today’s rejects are brought to you from Walmart since everyone and their mother goes there.

I checked this man out who was using food stamps. For whatever reason 84 cents was left over. I explained to him that there was 84 cents left but he just kept staring at me. He wouldn’t say anything. So finally after saying something for the third time he finally speaks and says for me to take an apple off. Then he says just one and when I apparently didn’t understand this he says I only want one. So once I fully understand what is going on I ask him which apple he wants because he has four different types of apples. He says he doesn’t care so I begin the voiding process for produce which is a tad longer than normal voiding. With voiding other items you can just press the void button and scan the bar code. But produce is weighed and each situation bears a different weight. What you do is press the void key and then type in the produces number, the computer then asks “what amount?” you then have to look at the receipt slip and see how much that item rang up for, type that amount in and press enter. It’s a bit confusing at first but once you have it down you can learn to do it pretty quickly. Apparently I wasn’t going fast enough and mid way into the voiding process he just says I’ll go to another register. I tell him he needs to wait a few minutes for me to get a manager to void the whole transaction because he has already slid his card and it won’t work if he uses it before my transaction is canceled but he just ignored me. He grabs his things (minus the apples) and goes to the cashier next to me. One of the managers comes over to cancel the transaction and I notice he forgot his apples. I grab them and take them to him and he yells at me “I SAID I ONLY WANTED ONE!!!” At this point, I walked away and turned my back to him to distance myself. My manager said to just ignore him but it had me sick for a few hours.

This next lady was more interesting than rude. She came up with a mountain of stuff in a cart. The amount was so huge she had to get a second cart just to get things efficiently through the line and proceeds to organize everything and asks me not to start scanning until she has everything ready. Once she had everything ready she asks me to keep cold with cold, cans with cans… well.. you get the drill… then says to stuff each bag as full as possible so she doesn’t have too many bags, but then she proceeds to tell me that she also wants everything double bagged. (makes a lot of sense huh? I want as little bags as possible BUT I want them all double bagged). After I gave her this blank stare (since all this info had yet to reach the offices in my brain) she went ahead and offered to bag everything herself. (THANK GOD!!!) It was very long and grueling.

On the same day as the mountain cart lady I came across a very interesting situation. She was very nice and I had finished checking her out and she gave me a large book’s worth of coupons. She had also gotten seven air wick fresheners and had six coupons for them. What was odd is that each of the coupons was the amount of each air wick. So in theory she was only paying for one. My computer popped up a message saying that at the end of the transaction I would need a manager to accept the transaction because of the large amount of coupons. Here is where things get really fucked up. She had gotten a bunch of lunchables and had a coupon for them… buy at least seven and you get 1.50 off. Well the computer wouldn’t accept the coupon and upon closer inspection it showed that it was an albertson’s coupon. She began arguing with me that she knew our policies and that it was a manufacturer’s coupon and that we take manufacturer’s coupons. I explained that I couldn’t do anything about it because it had to do with the computers and that I would get my manager to fix the issue. The manager came up and told her we couldn’t take it, she threw a fit saying we could and starts whining and crying “My kids need these” etc. Then she calls customer service while still in the line which is holding up the rest of the line (it was very busy that day). She argues with the customer service people and my manager suspends the transaction so I can continue with the line and also so we wouldn’t have to start over with her transaction when she was done. I sent her to another cashier who didn’t have any customers so she wouldn’t have to wait in line. This is where it gets hairy. The other cashier has to get another manager because the computer gave another “need manager” message. I was pulled off the lines to go to the manager’s office afterward and it was explained to me that the lady couldn’t purchase all those air wicks like she was trying to do. The reason is because people will take them somewhere else and then collect the money by returning them. She would have gotten 35 dollars from this. I wasn’t in trouble (I thought I was and I was trembling in my little space boots) and they congratulated me on staying calm.

This next story will make you loose your socks. I checked the lady out, bagged her things, pulled out the changed and handed it to her, and closed my register. Upon finishing the transaction the lady freaks out and starts saying things like why the hell did you give me this nickel (like I’d given it to her on purpose) and saying that no one else will accept this nickel and starts flipping off the deep end. Thus, I gave her a nickel she didn’t like. It had some black and white stuff on the face and you couldn’t see the face at all. However, you could still tell it was a nickel. At first she calmed down and said she would wait for the next customer so I can just give her a different nickel. I had no problem with this but the next customer used debit. Then she freaks out even worse and screams at me to get my manager. My manager gave her another nickel and she stormed off. For god sakes… its a fucking nickel. All our money is given to us by a bank. If the bank accepts it… everyone accepts it. Jeez….

Finally, today’s story… Now usually when someone gives me money and I open the register and then they try to give me change to get X amount of money or to trade types I won’t do it. The reason is so I don’t give them the wrong amount and/or give my draw the wrong amount. It’s the safest way not to get yourself into a bad situation. I’ve only done it a few times and it makes me uncomfortable. If it makes us uncomfortable we don’t have to do it. So this girl gives me the money, I open the register, and she proceeds to try and give me change and I explain that I have already opened the register and I am not suppose to do that. I give her the change and close the register and she starts telling me how rude I am and what a bitch I’m being and that she has worked for Walmart before and knows for a fact that we can give change back. She also proceeds to say that she’s going to turn in a complaint on me. Her companion gives me her things and tries to tell her to stop and I politely turned to her and said “It’s ok maam… she can say whatever she wants about me.” I smiled, finished the transaction and told both of them that I hope they have a wonderful evening.

So there you have it…. three weeks worth of crazy for your enjoyment. I’d like to hear some of your stories or even just your comments on the ones I have here. I appreciate those who read my blog on a constant basis so if you like the “People who piss me off” posts… please let me know.

CBC News
October 13, 2009

Summary

Future Shop, Canada’s greatest electronics retailer plans to hire 5,000 workers starting this week in preparation for the winter holidays. This indicates that Future Shop anticipates consumers to spend handsomely to stimulate the slowly recovering economy during these desperate and frugal times. Future Shop’s decision to employ this early illustrates the apprehension of well-trained employees during these upcoming weeks. This lengthy time period also denote the availability of these employable slots. In spite of this, many retailers including Future Shop reports a labour shortage notably because most people do not like working in retail. Wal-Mart, another large retailer, plans to significantly slash the prices on toys every week up until Christmas.

Connection

The connection between this section of the chapter and this article is that both Future Shop and Wal-Mart are merchandising businesses. This means that both these large corporations buys and sells good for a profit. The interesting thing I wondered was that how could these large businesses earn a large enough profit margin to keep several chains of their businesses running if they keep on reducing the prices of their goods while maintaining the wages of their employees alongside with their operating expenses. Not that I’m complaining, but this is a interesting point to note here.

Reflection

An afterthought; the decisions made by the aforementioned retailers are commendable. The outcomes of this decision are beneficial to both the retailers and the consumers in an equal symbiosis. While the retailers can lure in more customers and get the economy flowing, the consumers can receive affordable merchandises for doing their part by buying. This is truly a double-edged sword, except it does both parties good instead of harm. Perhaps I should apply for a job at the electronics sector of Future Shop to get an even further discount on electronics.

Part of the reason I started this blog was because I don’t think it’s just the recession that’s made us all want to spend less money. I think there’s an attitude shift: people want to buy less because they don’t want to buy as much, even if they still want to look good and have a social life.

And today there’s more evidence of just that. Despite the fact that economists and financial experts have started telling us that things are supposedly picking up, we all know that it’s going to be a while before we’re spending like the old days. You know, like 2007.

The new Zagat survey, for one, shows that New Yorkers are (shock!) eating out only 3 times a week, down from 3.3-3.4. And they’re spending less when they do – passing on starters or desserts, and cutting back on alcohol. On the upside, a fifth are eating more healthily as a result. Quelle surprise. This in a city where most people don’t know how to turn their oven on.

Meanwhile, Mastercard reports that we’re getting more thoughtful with our wallets, putting 4.1% more on debit cards and 14.8% less on credit cards.

Less scientifically, a New York magazine street poll found that of those who spent less last year (41%), the vast majority of them (60%) did it because they ‘just realised it was time to be smarter with money’.

And that there’s no downside to that, whatever way you spin it.

Cependant…

Conclusion

Every time someone enters your store, whether you operate a gas station, grocery store, or retail store in the mall, you ask, “Cash, debit or credit?” And most of the time the customer will say either debit or credit card. That is why you need reliable credit card equipment and a merchant account with a reputable company that will be able to handle these transactions. At Credit Card Processor .com you get both; reliable equipment and reliable merchant account services.

Debit cards and credit cards are very different from each other. A debit card, also called a “bank card” or “check card” is a plastic card that looks exactly like a credit card. It provides an alternative method to paying cash or writing a check when making a purchase. Funds are withdrawn directly from a customer’s bank account. In other words, the customer doesn’t have to pay back later like with a credit card.

In many countries, the debit card has overtaken the check as the most common form of payment. They act as a sort of ATM card for withdrawing cash and as a check-guarantee card. They allow for the instant withdrawal of cash as well. Many credit card processing merchants give their customers the option of “cashback” or “cashout” services, allowing the customer to withdraw cash along with his or her purchase. All of these complicated services are too much for the average business owner to deal with, cinsidering all the other things on your plate. Let Credit Card Processor .com take the stress away so you can focus on your business.
