Like most people, I live in a city. As much as I’d like to be cruising the Caribbean in a yacht or enjoying Lake of the Woods on the weekend, that lifestyle is difficult to maintain alongside of work and can seem a world away at times. To that end, it’s always nice to be able to obtain a little slice of that lifestyle in the city. That’s why the Sperry Topsiders sold by J. Crew jumped out at me right away. Sperry is famous for making some of the best boat shoes in the world, with special, non-slip soles meant to be worn on slippery decks (hence the other name for boat shoes: deck shoes); these are examples of their Authentic Original line. J. Crew is one of the premier purveyors of classic, American-style clothing and many of the items they sell tend to have a timeless appeal.

Boat shoes always look better with a few years of salt and wear on them and since I’m lacking both the time and ocean access necessary to get that look, J. While Doc Spyders crooned the Escape song and shook his ass, Montague, dressed like a judo master, gave a shiatsu massage to the congos, elbows and all. During the drum break, Doc did yoga poses as Brad lit up a tobacco pipe.

Next the Knights sequed into some Fleetwood Mac, a rousing rendition of Go Your Own Way which would have made Lindsay and Stevie at the Staples center across town, very proud. There were hits for the ladies too. Somebody’s Baby, Summer Breeze, Easy Like Sunday Morning, Ride Like The Wind and Africa, made the ladies sway like they were finding their sea legs at high tide. Knights drummer, Bobby Colada, even dedicated a song to Debbie St. Germaine (nee Finkelstein) noting how hard it can be to get into the yacht club with their (ahem) restrictions. Then the band launched into Rosanna. Meet you all the way, indeed.

Rounding out the night with some Robbie Dupree and Gerry Rafferty, KOMC’s Rico Morgan, was a master on the Korg keys and saxophone. Nelson Borealis wandered out onto the deck amongst the passengers for some smooth electric guitar. Brad gave a cheese update. Doc pulled up his white socks from his deck shoes and leapt over the mic stand; a finale of their white man choreography. I haven’t danced, or laughed, that hard in a while.

The normally staid preppy crowd whistled and yelled for more as if we were watching Bon Jovi in ‘88. But the Knights had such a long way to go to make it to the border of Mexico. So they bid us all a bon voyage and asked us to come get smooth next Thursday for the continuation of their residency. It’d take a lot to drag me away from them.

I often get asked about suitable shoes for sailing in Greece and so I thought it might be useful to  explain what to choose.

What are “Boat Shoes”?

Boat shoes, also referred to as ‘deck shoes’, were designed as tough, sturdy shoes with particularly good traction to keep sailors on their feet in wet weather and on slippery decks.  I have read that they were based on North American Indian moccasins.

A good pair of boat shoes should fit snugly, but comfortably. Your foot should not slide around in them but your toes should not be cramped. The most important feature of a boat or deck shoe is the sole. Boat shoe soles should have a lot of grip and really keep your feet where you plant them. The whole purpose of these shoes is to help keep you upright on a slippery deck. Sometimes with laces, but more often without, boat shoes are also designed to be easy to slip on and off.

As well as having good grip, the sole should be non-marking – with a small, often honeycomb patttern and in a light colour. This is important on modern GRP boats.

Who Needs Shoes Anyway?
Unless you are sailing with us between October and March, you’ll probably spend most of your time on board barefoot. It’s one of the nice things about sailing.

Bare feet are fine for during the day but there are times when you will need to have shoes.

You should always protect your feet when you are using the anchor or stepping ashore.

Key things to look for in boating shoes for Greece are:

• protection for toes and feet (i.e.: not sandals)
• light coloured non-slip sole that will not mark deck
• small tread so that stones do not get caught in it
• easy to slip on and off in hot weather
• not too hot and heavy

Plimsolls and Canvas Deck Shoes

Canvas plimsoles, either lace-up or slip-on, are a good footwear solution for our climate and what we would recommend.  Remember to choose a light coloured honeycomb sole.

At the moment they are enjoying a revival as  the coolest, latest style in retro chic so should be easy to find.

Buy them cheap and cheerful or go for a designer label if you want to make a fashion statement.

The Waterproof Option
Bright and colourful as well as waterproof, shoes like these below (from Lands End) are suitable for wearing on both yachts and RIB.

They feature fast-draining mesh uppers and rubber footbeds and soles with drainage holes. Thy’re great for dinghy work and you can even wear them swimming.

Traditional Leather Boat Shoes
This is a typical leather boat shoe as sold by marine chandlers. They are made for use on board with soles of a non-marking material.

These shoes can be worn in the cooler months of the year as well as mid summer and are useful if you want to sail in places other than the Mediterranean.

Being leather, they tend to be more expensive than canvas deck shoes.
Leather boat shoes need to be regularly cleaned and cared for to keep the leather supple and in good condition.

Use a leather feeder for a waterproof seal that prolongs the life of the shoe. We recommend Nikwax or Collonil Rustical. Neutral Kiwi is also suitable. (available in climbing shops if you cannot find them in a shoe shop.)

A word of warning ….

Some boat shoes have dyed leather. Although this looks smart, we have found a drawback to these in Greece. Worn without socks they have a tendency to stain your feet if your feet perspire or the shoes get wet and the dye runs!

Machine washable deck shoes
I owned a pair of these Quayside Bermudas for many years and really loved the fact that they could be popped into the washing machine when dirty. Unfortunately I have to report that they suffered very slightly from the same problem of  dye leaking, although this was not a major problem. Worth it for the convenience if you will be sailing a lot.

If your deck shoes have removable liners, regularly take them out and spray them to keep them fresh and clean.

Where to Get Them

If you can’t find suitable shoes in your local shops, or don’t have time to look, try online sites such as ebay and Amazon. An Internet search for ‘deck shoe’, for instance, will come up with numerous companies who sell online.

You can try ebay for good prices and Boat Shows often have branded shoes at a special price.

Summer has finally reached our shores and what a relief. Feet around the country are rejoicing now that boots are being put away in favour of more casual and relaxed footwear. Remember 5 years ago when my insanely hot coworker (Hi Ryan! Martinis and Winamp night at my place soon!) wore boat shoes to the office without socks? And I fell in love with him from then on? And then I said “god, boat shoes would be huuuuuuuuge if they caught on….” Then I told some white people about them and they said “Those shoes that my people wear to the cottage? Ya, my dad has those…” Then I went to NYC and every fucker working in a cafe in Williamsburg and Red Hook were wearing them with rolled up Ralph Lauren jeans?

Ya.

I then started to wear my grandfather’s boat shoes but only to the park and for walks to the store because I find them insanely uncomfortable. Maybe because my grandpa routinely bought $8 shoes. I could never walk more than 10 blocks in them without getting a giant blister.

Now deck shoes, boat shoes and all kinds of variations of this American classic are everywhere. This summer, it finally hit the mainstream after a few years of being ubiquitous with retail associates at Jack Spade and What Comes Around, Goes Around.

I guess to stay hip, us hipsterattis have to to look for unique ones that aren’t going to be sold everywhere. Inaccessibility is so hot.

At $498, I think I’ll pass on the boots and buy something I need instead. Like a fucking coffee table. Or a rug I like that these shoes cost more than a table. Or two rugs. Or 5 rugs at Ikea. Or 8 pairs of Topsiders. Oooooooooooh, maybe I’ll just get 8 pairs of Topsiders.

I might not own a boat, but you’d better believe I’d be on it motherfucker and I wouldn’t be wearing “flippy-floppys”, I’d be wearing Duffer Daps Deck Shoes. There’s so much on offer for feet this summer you’d better start saving now because you’re going to want it all. Summer shoes are no longer limited to plimsolls and flip flops, this year it’s all about deck shoes, loafers and the ubiquitous gladiator sandal. 

Forget your grandpa holidaying in Devon and think Alexa Chung yachting in St Tropez when you head out to buy your deck shoes. Don’t, however, go for an all out nautical look, I doubt even Alexa could work that. Instead team with 7/8 or turned up boyfriend jeans and a simple tee-shirt. A panama hat would inject some south of France chic and a bit of fashion edge into the look. 

Those who prefer to play it a bit safer should surely be comfortable with gladiator sandals by now. First spotted post-Caesar three summers ago, they’ve made a comeback year after year and for good reason – they go with anything and instantly sex-up a pretty summer dress. To really vamp it up go for a Balenciaga-esque studded pair. Girls on a budget should head to New Look who have a good range starting from £16. I particularly like this pair, which will add detail to a simple outfit. Adventurous types might like Topshop’s jelly gladiators (£10). They’re fun for summer, but be warned, I had jelly shoes from Topshop (though they didn’t have straps) two summers ago and as soon as my feet got hot they slid around in the shoe making them near-impossible to walk in. Not for strolling round hot cities, but ideal for the beach.
