Decode: Digital Design Sensations

The Victoria and Albert Museum in London showcases an exhibition of digital and interactive works, addressing three lines of consideration: code, interactivity and network. With works ranging from small screen based graphics to large-scale installations, and in a mix of “classics” and more recent, specially commissioned works, the exhibition traces a panoramic view on established and emergent propositions of digital and interactive art and design.

—
EXHIBITION AND RELATED EVENTS

Running until the 11th April in the exhibition space of the “The Porter Gallery”, and gathering approximately 30 works, the exhibition then extends, spatially and temporally, with a series of interventions throughout the Museum’s facade, entrance and garden, as well as in the Science Museum, and through a digital work for its website : a generative open source identity was commissioned to Karsten Schmidt, which the public is invited to transform, to be shown on digital screens through the London Underground. This malleable identity, where “decode” becomes “recode”, reinforces the transformative and participatory nature of these works, that are either in a state of perpetual evolution or/and influenced by the behavior of the participant spectator.
—
PARTNERSHIP AND COLLABORATION

The V&A exhibition “Decode: Digital Design Sensations” is a partnership with SAP, namely through joint commissions like “bit.code” by Julius Popp, and “Mirror Mirror” by Jason Bruges Studio, or the SAP weekend: Digital Design Festival, in February. The exhibition is a curatorial collaboration between The V&A Museum and Onedotzero, an organization dedicated to digital and interactive contemporary arts, with a collaborative and cross-media approach, operating internationally namely with the Onedotzero festival: Adventures in Moving Image.
In the words of its director, Shane Walter, Decode responds to the thirst for this kind of events — already verified in previous collaboration with the V&A with the “Transvision” event, in 2006.

—
THEMES

The three themes (code, interactivity and network) are fluidly intertwined.
After confronting the “Bit.code” installation by Julius Popp in the entrance (where large mechanically operated rolls of black and white “pixels” form words retrieved from networks of web feeds of news sites), we see Daniel Brown’s “Growth and Form”, a wall projection of generative plants in constant growth, inspired by elements from the V&A collection. The interactive “Dune” of Daan Roosegaarde forms the entrance to the exhibition, with a corridor of stalks that undulate like electronic dune grass, and light up in reaction to the movements and sounds made by the visitors.

CODE
The tradition of using code as raw material, as “plastic” material, and design tool for the creation of visual, fluid, and ever-changing forms, is confirmed with the works of Casey Reas, Lia or John Maeda. Some works evolve according to their own intrinsic rules, inspired in the abstract algorithmic structures of nature, others react to sound input, as Flight 404’s “solar”, or are fed by other kinds of data, like Marius Watz’s ‘Stockspace’ visualizations, generated from specific generalized stock market data input. The even more abstract “data.scan” by Ryoji Ikeda has each pixel strictly calculated by a mathematical principle, with data collected from two investigative studies, one mapping the stars, the other mapping the human body.
Troika’s zoetrope is based on the deconstruction of Wim Crouwel´s Gridnik typeface, and forms words when an abstract patterns is lit with the right rotation frequency.
The well known project “house of cards” by James Frost and Aaron Koblin is here presented an interactive data viewer version.

NETWORK
Fabrica’s “Exquisite Clock” makes the transition to the “network” section, inviting the public to participate by uploading images to <http://www.exquisiteclock.org>, that will integrate the work. The “network” theme explores the traces left by everyday communications (blogs, news feeds, etc.) that are visible in “We feel fine”, by Jonathan Harris and Sep Kamvar, that charts feelings by the way are verbally described in blogs. Aaron Koblin makes complex “Flight Patterns” visualizations, and Stanza’s project “Sensity”, collects data with sensors on an environment, and produces a live visualization of the city of London, commenting on noise as “urban music”…
… “Listening Post”, by Mark Hansen and Ben Rubin, is a dynamic portrait of online communication, displaying fragments of text, sampled in real-time, from public internet chat-rooms and bulletin boards – it’s an on site loan to the Decode exhibition to be viewed in the Science Museum.

—
INTERACTIVITY
Inevitably, the “interactivity” section is the broadest, gathering different approaches to the reciprocal relations between the work and the viewer, with works that explore transparent, intuitive, and organic ways, of interacting. More literally, Golan Levin’s “Opto isolator” actually “looks back at you”, with a robotic eye, behaving in a playful way, in response to the viewers gaze. Some works take on the “payable” quality of interactivity, such as “Body paint” by Mehmet Akten, others go beyond “play”, with more poetic comments, like Simon Heijdens’s “Tree” silhouette, conceived as facade projection, to responds to the environment.

Mirrors

Literally as “mirrors”, some works integrate, and translate the viewers presence, underlining a “reflexive” quality in interactivity. They comment on our position, participation and perception, creating a reflexive dialogue between the viewers’ and the works’ behavior.

The imposing “Venetian Mirror” by Fabrica (Andy Cameron and Sam Baron), — one of the few “new” works in the exhibition — contrast its material frame of multifaceted fragments of mirror, with its subtle digital reflective surface, that distorts our sense of time. This contrast not only reinforces the mirror’s status as object, as it underlines the superposition of time fragments in the reflecting image, as a delicately changing “portrait”. The viewers is instantly reflected on the surface of Daniel Rozin’s “Weave Mirror”, a carefully crafted mechanism, allying the warmth of the material to its intangible computational behavior. In “Study for a Mirror”, by Random International, a “temporary light painting” is created by detecting the presence of someone standing still, as if a portrait was to be taken…

Outside the gallery space, the “Audience” of mirrors, by Chris O’Shea and Random International, reflects on vanity, with mirrors immediately pointing to the most exuberant viewers that contrast the neutral background. The “Mirror.mirror” project (by Jason Bruges Studio) in installed in the water pond in the garden, multiplying its reflections.

Between the plasticity of code, the traces of network communications, and the playable, poetic or reflexive qualities of interactivity, the “Digital design sensations” we can experience in this exhibition signal a confirmed territory of creative practices, that go beyond a mere exploration of the hybrid materials and techniques, finding possibilities to create meaningful experiences, that comment and reflect on contemporary forms of perception and interaction. In this sense, these works evokes the “elastic mind” proposed by the MoMA, here in a carefully contained selection, and consensual perspective.

By its components and extensions, Decode can be seen as an exhibition inserted into a more general project, and a more fundamental program, of the museum. (also, the “digital Pioneers” exhibition, coinciding with “decode”, provides the historical context for this practices). A program of the world’s “largest museum of decorative arts and design” to embrace contemporary digital practice and create a solid ground for reflection, on how digital and interactive design works, are shaped and shaping our culture.

New exhibition of Victoria & Albert Museum, Decode: Digital Design Sensations (Dec 8.09 – Apr 11.10). Curated in collaboration with leading digital arts organization onedotzero, Decode displays the latest developments in digital art and interactive design, from small screen graphics to large-scale interactive installations, by prominent international artists and designers such as Daniel Brown, Golan Levin, Daniel Rozin, Troika and Karsten Schmidt. The exhibition explores three themes: Code presents pieces that use computer code to create new designs; Interactivity shows works that are directly influenced by the viewer and visitors can interact with the displays; and Network focuses on works made by means of advanced technologies and ’networks’, everyday communications such as internet and e-mails.

This exhibition which is dedicated to modern technology makes a big contrast with last week’s opening of new Medieval & Renaissance Galleries. You may like or not, I was quite impressed: some works in the Network section made me dizzy with lines, dots and stuffs, and the Code themed pieces were too colorful and geeky (Digital Zoetrope by Troika is pretty cool, though), but the Interactivity part was pretty fun. I also enjoyed looking at grown-up adults jumping up and down or making funny face in front of the camera. My favorite works are Weave Mirror by Daniel Rozin; silhouettes of the people in front of it reflects on weaved shiny plates – you can see hundreds of wires on the back of it, and Dune by Daan Roosegaarde, which looks like a lot of flowers gleaming in the dark – very superb.

So what’s the
_x0020_
number about? Well, hex 20 is the UTF value for a space, and
x0020
represents that space. I guess the underscores are delimiters. The reason for this escaping is that XML element names can’t have a space.

How would I encode or decode this? Well, the clue is in the phrase ‘XML element names’. You can use:

System.XML.XmlConvert.EncodeName() to encode

System.XML.XmlConvert.DecodeName() to decode

On November 17 2009 Decode Genetics Inc filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The company had become weighted down by debt after 13 years of failing to make a profit. The company’s final crisis stems in part from the fact that last year the company funds, managed by Lehman Brothers and invested in US auction-rate securities, were seized up during the credit crisis last year.

A pioneer in personal genetics, DeCode’s scientists have successfully demonstrated genetic mutations linked to a range of diseases such as schizophrenia, cancer, diabetes, and heart diseases. Despite the prolific output of its scientists, DeCode’s drug development programmes made little progress and the company’s DNA tests for diseases brought in little cash.

Thanks to a group of investors that fund an enterprise called Saga Investments, some of DeCode’s work will continue. Among these investors are the original funders of DeCode Polaris Venture Partners and Arch Venture.

With the ability to add extensions, Mozilla Firefox is one of the most flexible browsers around. Tod

With the ability to add extensions, Mozilla Firefox is one of the most flexible browsers around. Today, we’ll be discussing HackBar, one of the many add-ons available for Firefox.

First things first, you can get HackBar from Mozilla’s site directly, through this link: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3899

What does HackBar do? Well, the main purpose of HackBar is to provide you with an easy interface to test out SQL injection techniques. HackBar provides many shortcuts such as converting strings into their CHAR() equivalents in MySQL, one-click encrypting to MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and ROT13, encoding and decoding of URLs, etc.

I’ve found the encoding and decoding of URLs to be especially useful. Some addresses are URL encoded, and it makes it hard to decipher the exact content. With HackBar, you can click the ‘Load URL’ button to load the current URL into HackBar’s text box, then click URL decode to decode the URL and give you the address in plain text.

Another useful feature is the MySQL union select statement. It’s a one-click solution that gives you the union select for as many columns as you specify. Definitely a real time-saver when there are lots of columns, as you no longer need to type every single one manually.

For those who are interested in security audits, HackBar is one tool that you want to have.

Love

Paramore, a band from lil’ old Tennessee, are about to finish up what I think is their first headlining US tour. My friend and I were planning on going to one of their concerts in October but their lead singer, Hayley Williams, got sick and the show had to be pushed back.

However, the makeup show was last week Friday, November 6th at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul, Minnesota, and it was nothing short of amazing. I have always wanted to see Paramore live because I’ve always wanted to see Hayley sing live. Her after show reviews usually always highlight the fact that she can get her live notes to sound exactly like the ones from in the studio — and yep, she DEFINITELY can!

With that being said, I think she was still sorta sick last Friday because they brought her some tea while she was on stage and every time she talked to the crowd she sounded really hoarse, but somehow she was still on point when she was singing.

All in all, they rocked socks. They played something from every album that they’ve released, and did an acoustic version of a song too. Plus, their stage, energy, and her onstage presence got the crowd pretty riled up — The tickets were for general admission so everyone was squished up next to each other trying to get closer to the front, there were cameras going off all over the place, and it was so HOT — and all completely worth it!

If you haven’t heard about Paramore you should give ‘em a try. They’re classified as an ‘alternative rock’ band, and they are pretty appealing to everyone from scenesters to Moms, but I don’t think that that means that their sound is unrefined or unimaginative, I just think it means they are good …

Here’s a couple of things by them to check out if you’re interested (aka Do it!):

I just feel so much when I hear that song. I made a mix CD based around that song and have Linkin Park, Relient K, Skillet, 3 Doors Down, Some songs form the Twilight Soundtrack, and Fuel on my mix CD. It feels like how I feel inside…I am wishing i had the blue in my hair and it was short and I could be kind of punk….

I know I am crazy but I seem to go through stages of how I want to dress based on how I feel inside…..

Okay…time for bed….

But first the Lyris to Decode by Paramore and link to the video

How can i decide what`s right?
When you`re clouding up my mind
I can`t win your losing fight,
All the time

How can i ever own what`s mine,
When you`re always taking sides
But you won`t take away my pride,
No not this time
Not this time

(chorus)
how did we get here
When i used to know you so well
But how did we get here
I think i know

the truth is hiding in your eyes
And its hanging on your tongue
Just boiling in my blood
But you think that i cant see
What kind of man that you are,
If you`re a man at all
Well i will figure this one
Out on my own
(i’m screaming i love you so)
On my own
(my thoughts you can’t decode)

(chorus)

do you see what we`ve done
We`re gonna make such fools of ourselves
Do you see what we`ve done
We`re gonna make such fools of ourselves

(chorus)

there is something i see in you
It might kill me
I want it to be true

I just realized after posting a few videos from Muse and Killers, that Adam Lambert has commented that these two bands have influenced his new album due out in November.

Now both bands are in Twilight New Moon’s Soundtrack, so it’s possible that Adam Lambert’s music will show up in Eclipse or Breaking Dawn’s sound track?

I think so.

He will create a new sound, be theatrical and be perfect for the movies.

I think he should even do a cameo shot in both of them, just for the fun of it.

I haven’t read the books yet, I’m waiting till after I’ve seen all the movies.

I know that Adam’s music producer is Rob Cavallo and he did the music for Paramore – Decode in the Twilight Movie, so it’s possible that Adam will follow suit.

Now lets use our imaginations here, what can we get Adam Lambert to do in the movies?

He could do some dark music for the bad guys in the next movie, or he could do a love song.

Now all you girls out there and Elvis fans would go nuts if Adam Lambert wrote a love song to his fans, right?

It could go like this;

My heart goes out to all of you

thank you from the bottom of my heart

for watching me and rooting for me to reach my goals

My fans are everything to me

I love you all

Keep following your dreams and visions

Never give up, no , no
Never give up no, no
Your going to make it, if you try
Believe in yourself
Before you die

(okay poetry comes naturally to me, I just made that up. :O )
