Abstract The present study examined intake data from 384 participants with autism spectrum disorders

Abstract The present study examined intake data from 384 participants with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and a comparison group of 100 participants with dyslexia on nine standardized measures of decoding and comprehension. Although diagnostic groups were based on parental reports and could not be verified independently, we were able to observe significant distinctions between subject groups. Overall findings confirm previous results of a disassociation between decoding and comprehension in ASD. Using a larger sample than previous studies and a greater variety of measures, a pattern of relatively intact decoding skills paired with low comprehension was found in autism, PDD-NOS, and Asperger’s. In contrast, the dyslexic group showed the opposite pattern of stronger comprehension and weaker decoding.

It was a beautiful autumn day in Red Lion, PA, where I had the privilege of working with wonderful teachers and their children in grades 3-6 today. The school was Pleasant View Elementary; the topic was guided reading.

It was my favorite kind of day– the kind where I work with kids! The teachers and I worked together choosing a lesson focus, picking a text that was just right for the students, and planning a guided reading lesson. Then I taught the students in a small group while teachers observed, and we ended with debriefing– reflecting on the lesson and what both we and the children learned.

I got to teach three very different small groups today. We had a 3rd grade above-level reading group that read very well, but sometimes skipped words they’d never seen before. To guide them, we chose a text from the Internet about hamsters. Their class is getting a hamster, and the nonfiction text we chose was about getting a home for your hamster.

I showed students in this group how to highlight a new word they’d not seen before. (We used a highlighter pen, since they had a text printed from the Internet.) Then I showed them how to look carefully at the new word (usually a long word) and find the parts they know, covering up each part with their fingers after they’d read it, and then blending the parts together, using their fingers as needed. I modeled with a dry erase board and a few new words, as pictured. They helped me circle parts they knew.

When they began reading the article on their own, at first, some of them thought they knew all the words; but with guidance, they began highlighting words and trying to put the parts together. Their teacher told me that she was thinking that vocabulary was their need, but today she realized that both decoding and vocabulary were important for this group to focus on.

The students and I felt successful. They learned a lot about hamster habitats and are eager to read more tomorrow. More on the other lessons coming soon…

These are a few I’ve gottn from going to some studies n spending my own time as well looking into. You can easily confirm it all using a Bible. Heres the format. The code, what it means, and where you can find evidence of what it means.

Beast=kingdom… Daniel 7:17,23

Sea=people, nations, tounges, multitude… Revelation 17:15, Isaiah 17:12, 13

7 Heads=7 mountains…. Revelation 17:9,10

Mountains- kingdoms…… Jeremiah 51: 24, 25

10 Horns=10 kings…. Daniel 7:24, Revelation 17:12

Crowns=kings

Blasphemy=
A) A man who claims to forgive sins… Luke 5:21, Mark 2:5-7 (No man shed blood for human kind, only Jesus did, only Jesus can forgive sins, not a priest, or pope)

B) A man who claims to be God… John 10:31-33

………………..

Dragon (power, seat, authority)=Devil or Satan…. Revelation 12:9, Revelation 20:2
………………..
(In the vision found in the book of Daniel of the beasts)
Leopard=Greece…. Daniel 6:7

Bear= Media Persia….. Daniel 7:5

Lion=Babylon… Daniel 7:4

There is another beast, one indescribable. This 4th beast is Rome, and receives a deadly wound (separation of church and state [1798 pope was captured and the papal power which dominated the world for 1260 years fulfilling its prophecy in the Bible came to an end. This power started 538 with Justinian's decree which gave pope power.]) **The Great Controversy by Ellen G. White is the best book outside the Bible I could recommend to read to learn more about this and more**
-The Bible predicts this wound would heal (union of church and state)
- Its a power that receives worship

42 months x 30 days= 1260 years

Time= 1 year….. Daniel 7:25, Daniel 4:3
Times=2 years
Dividing of time= half a year

Day=1 year in prophecy…. Ezekiel 4:6, Numbers 14:34

This 4th beast is a persecuting power…. Daniel 7:21, 25/Revelation 13:7
It will think to change the law concerning time. (4th Commandment, 7th day Sabbath is the only one out of the 10 of the Laws concerning a time)

Representative of God on Earth… or….. Vicaius Filii Dei (Papal system, pope)
V=5 /// F=0 /// D=500
I=1 /// I=1 /// E=50
C=100 / L=50 /// I=1
A=0 /// I=1
I=1 /// I=1
U=5
S=0
__112/// __53 /// __501 = 666

Myths on other marks of the beast and names using this same method that add up to 666 but have NOTHING to do w/ the mark of the beast and I’ll explain why.

Bar codes…. not the mark
Chips…… not the mark
Bill Gates….. not the mark
Adolf Hitler….. not the mark
Joseph Stalin….. not the mark
Ellen G. White…. not the mark…. Why not??? Because they all lack the criteria the Bible gives that go along w/ the mark of the beast.

This information was gathered though Bible studies and research. Just look up the Biblical texts and match it up. When the Bible talks about prophecy, certain words mean something other than their literal meaning. The Bible always explains itself, there is no need to be confused for those who really study and pray about it.

If you would like to know more, for example, numbers also have signifcance (1,2,3, 7, 12, 40, 50 etc) and some other words. From visiting amazingfacts.com I found a sister site of theirs named MostAmazingProphecies.com Just copy that to a new tab or window, check it out. There are many more sources I can share, ask if you would like to know where you can learn more of if you had a question. Oh, one more site that is all about prophecy and correctly understanding it is www.BibleProphecyTruth.com.

And again, I would suggest looking for Ellen G. White’s book, The Great Controversy to learn a WHOLE lot more.
**This is not to offend no one, in case about the whole Rome/pope thing. However these are things no one talks about anymore and are Biblical truths as well that need to get out. Hope its helpful.

In the absence of a “Rosetta stone” (something with bilingual text), it is very hard to decode what was written by the Ancient Citizens of the Sindhu Valley. The research team in the above article is using computer programs to perform a statistical analysis of the symbols and to create a statistical model, as was done with the Human Genome etc.

“We used the latter to show that the Indus texts that have been discovered in West Asia are statistically very different from the texts found in the Indus Valley,” said Rao (one of the scientists), “suggesting that the Indus people used their script to represent different content or language when living in a foreign land.” This means that we are talking about a language and not about a set of religious/political symbols…

Roughly 5,000 seals, tablets and amulets, filled with about 500 different symbols, were created somewhere between 2600 and 1900 B.C. by a people living in the Indus River Valley.

—–

My study so far indicates that the Sindhu Valley Civilization (2500 BC) is one of the successors/remnants of the ganga-yamua-saraswathi civilization. The Ganga-Yamuna civilizations (as well as the deccan civilizations of Kishkinda, Andhra (Godavari-Krishna), Dravida etc) continued to flourish, without much interruption with the drying of the Saraswathi River. To the West of the Saraswathi River, the Sindhu Civilizations flourished. Some of the former residents of the Saraswathi Basin moved to the west coast, Kerala, as per their collective memories. This may began even before the drying of the river Saraswathi.

Well, we have completed our first full week. It has been a great week. First of all, I stole Ryan

Well, we have completed our first full week. It has been a great week. First of all, I stole Ryan’s Power Writing Unit and used it instead of my general use of mapping to create paragraphs. It is pretty tedious, but very effective and my students don’t seem to have too much trouble, so far. I may modify some of the end tasks, but it is an easy way for them to produce some nice paragraphs, far better than they would have been able to, otherwise. I collected some quick measurements of decoding and fluency. Most everyone is on track as far as work is concerned and work is graded, already. Now I just have to make some adjustments to my plans and tweak some tasks for next week.

I already have reading intervention scheduled and have completed several lessons with those students. My strategy is to take fewer students for a semester every single day and see if that produces more gains than taking a group a couple of times a week. Absences and special events seemed to get in the way last year. I’m trying to avoid that this year.

During the classes we teach together, we got quite a lot accomplished. We both took timed reading samples and reading decoding samples using the QRI-4. Ryan would get them started with the Power Writing Tasks, then we would both administer the diagnostic tests to individuals, and help with Power Writing in between. It was hectic, but it worked. Both of us kept a roster with each assignment listed. Whenever a student completed a task/assignment to mastery, we would note it on our check list. Each night Ryan would consolidate our check lists, update Progress Book, and we’d be ready for the next day with complete lists of which assignments each student had completed to mastery. That worked well. This weekend I’ll be putting our QRI data on a color coded spread sheet so that we can easily identify students’ frustration, instructional and independent reading levels. We will also be planning “attacks” for students who are falling behind in getting the Power Writing assignments done. We will likely do that through email so that we will be ready on Monday to help those students catch up on their work.

Another important task we completed was an inclusion document that we received while in Georgia at the High Schools That Work conference. It consisted of seven questions that we answered separately about our expectations about inclusion. Afterward, we shared our responses to see if they matched. Some of the topics we had discussed earlier, but we felt it was an important task. If we have different expectations about what we will be doing, then we need to address them now, rather than later. Here are the questions:

1. I will do the following to help my partner:

2. I expect my partner to help with the following:

3. I would like my role in disciplining OUR students to be:

4. I would like my role in grading OUR students to be:

5. I would like my role in planning lessons for OUR students to be:

6. During a regular class period, I see myself:

7. During a regular class period, I see my partner:

It looked like our answers matched up pretty well, so that is a good sign. We have also already demonstrated some similarities in the way that we plan and work. Both of us like using the “grade on the spot” method, as described in the Power Writing unit involving check lists. Both of tend to use mastery learning, spend little time lecturing and more time monitoring progress and providing feedback. I do not operate any differently than I do in my own classroom, with the exception that I have some to learn about the content of the class before I can spend equal time teaching. I think those similarities will work in our favor as we teach together.

This controversial ad brings significance to Hall's Theory What is the first thing that you see

This controversial ad brings significance to Hall's Theory

What is the first thing that you see when you take a look at this picture? Perhaps you saw the logo of Ubuntu in the top left corner, the shape and position that the butts are placed, or maybe all you noticed was ass.

This is a perfect example of Shockvertising. Shockvertising is a type of advertising that is deliberately offensive, crude, startling, or explicitly deviant. It is meant to shock people into getting their attention. Although often controversial, Shockvertising is fairly effective. How many of us would not stop to take a closer look if we had seen this advertisement plastered on a wall? None of us. That is just how effective Shockvertising is.

For those of you who do not know, Linux Ubuntu is a freeware software operating system available for your computer. It is available to anyone, which may be one aspect that this ad wants to portray. Using Stuart Hall’s 3 types of decoding I was able to thoughtfully create examples of each from this ad.

Dominant is the first type of decoding, with regards to this advertisement, is that the marketers wish to display the diversity of people who use Linux. In reality, people from all over the world use Linux for its flexibility and the ability to see all the coding that was used. This flexibility and transparency is displayed by the nudity element in this ad.

The second type of decoding is opposition decoding. In this advertisement, some people will portray it as a pornographic three-some with no relevance to Ubuntu whatsoever.

The third type of of decoding is negotiated reading, where the viewer of the advertisement attempts to compromise between the dominant and the oppositional meanings. In this case, viewers will recognize that it is an advertisement, however, they will not respect the fact that it may be effective advertising. They will probably not notice the placement of the butts, however they will be aware that this is an advertisement for Ubuntu.

An effective method of advertising should predominantly attempt to convey the dominant message. Personally, I think this advertisement will only work if a liberal viewer will spend enough time to observe and properly decode all aspects of this picture. Please keep in mind that these ideas are still being PROVEN as stated by the book Media and Cultural studies by Meenakshi Gigi Durham and Douglas Kellner. Please click on the name of the book for a link to the actual reading, it is very interesting!

-Look up there ^

CIA analyst Michael Scheuer’s recent call for bin Laden to kill more Americans would be shocking if we hadn’t already heard it dozens of times before from other “War on Terror” advocates. “It’s an absurd situation,” Scheuer told FOX News personality Glenn Beck on his program last week. “Only Osama can execute an attack that will force Americans to demand that their government protect them effectively, consistently, and with as much violence as necessary.”

The comments have provoked much shock and outrage among pundits and websites like Jon Stewart and NewsHounds who may have considered him to be on their side. After all, he seemed to be a vociferous and effective critic of the neocons, having authored books like Imperial Hubris and having supported Ron Paul during the 2008 Presidential debates by asserting that 9/11 was merely blowback for American interventionism in the Middle East. With his latest comments, Scheuer is now relegated to the ignoble company of neocon shills like Stu Bykofsky of the Philadelphia Inquirer, who dreamed of another terrorist attack back in 2007 to rally people around the flag (and, presumably, George W. Bush) once again; Donald Rumsfeld, who complained in 2006 that the Bush regime was a victim of its own success in the “War on Terror” and that another terrorist attack was needed to remind people that the war was still necessary; and indeed the entire neocon establishment, who in their 2000 white paper Rebuilding America’s Defenses called for “a catalyzing event like a new Pearl Harbor” to mobilize the public to get behind their goal of projecting American military influence around the globe for another century. Despite his surprisingly unhelpful attempt to clarify his remarks, Scheuer is now—like all of those who have said that terrorism is needed to bring about political support for their idea—a terrorist himself by very definition.

The “War on Terror”

What seems paradoxical at surface level—that Scheuer is essentially joining the neocons he once opposed in wishing for another terrorist attack—is in fact perfectly understandable at a deeper level of analysis. Scheuer, like the neocons, shares an underlying belief in the “War on Terror” itself: the idea that the U.S. is facing a dramatic and existential threat from radical Muslim terrorists. They may differ in their belief about the motivating causes of this war or the best way to fight it, but that the U.S. itself is at war cannot be questioned. Thus, both Scheuer and the neocons face a shared concern: growing public skepticism taht a “War on Terror” is really taking place, or is necessary.

Indeed, since the “catalyzing event” of the “War on Terror” on 9/11/2001, Americans have been subjected to a never-ending series of vague, unsubstantiated threats from unnamed sources; a parade of losers, ex-cons, drug addicts and mentally challenged individuals who couldn’t organize a party on a Saturday night let alone a massive terrorist attack, who are inevitably spurred on, organized and funded by the FBI but who are supposedly serious threats to army bases and government buildings; the assertion that there is a new cadre of white Al-Qaeda ready to take up the jihad and strike at the ‘Homeland’; that right-wingers, gun owners and war vets (or is that left-wingers, peace activists and war moms?) are their willing accomplices, as are people who cite the consitution, vote for third parties or even sweat too much; and now not only does the Patriot Act make every misdemeanour an act of terrorism, the Department of Defense is now openly classifying all political protest as acts of terrorism. Is it any wonder that the electorate’s trust in the government has reached an all-time nadir and that the overwhelming majority of Americans think they are being lied to about 9/11 itself?

A d v e r t i s e m e n t

And so men like Scheuer find a common enemy with the neocons: those who understand that there are radical Muslims who are willing to fight and die for their cause, but don’t believe they would be able to carry off an attack even approaching the scale of 9/11 without the active support of state actors and intelligence agencies. Of course, nothing can convince someone that there is an imminent terrorist threat like a terrorist attack, so those who are convinced of the necessity of the “War of Terror” end up hoping for terrorists to strike down some of their fellow countrymen so they can get back to fighting over how best to wage the war.

Worryingly, it is a remarkably small leap from the conviction that a new terrorist attack would be helpful to the decision to provocateur or stage just such an attack. While it remains doubtful that Mr. Scheuer would ever entertain such thoughts, the same cannot be said of some of his less scrupulous compatriots. Even Zbigniew Brzezinski warned the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 2007 that a terrorist attack was likely to be staged in order to provide the Bush Administration with a pretext for attacking Iran. Nor is this concern over false-flag terrorism merely hypothetical. It is already official government policy.

In 2002, Rumsfeld oversaw the creation of a new strike force in the “War on Terror” called P2OG. Short for Proactive, Preemptive Operations Group, it was a body bringing together CIA and Pentagon teams to combine military, technical and intelligence capabilities. The group’s responsibilities include “’stimulating reactions’ among terrorists and states possessing weapons of mass destruction—that is, for instance, prodding terrorist cells into action and exposing themselves to “quick-response” attacks by U.S. forces.”

In effect, Rumsfeld and the DoD decided that it was worth letting some civilians die in order to flush the terrorists out. The enormity of this revelation was not lost on Chris Floyd of Counterpunch: “Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, George W. Bush and the other members of the unelected regime in Washington plan to deliberately foment the murder of innocent people—your family, your friends, your lovers, you—in order to further their geopolitical ambitions.”

Again, it is important to note that the idea of provoking terrorists into acting or allowing innocent civililans to die so the “War on Terror” can forge ahead is not speculation or fantasy. It is an official government strategy. And it was implemented in Iraq.

U.S. and British Staging Terror in Iraq

During the Troubles in Northern Ireland, the British Army set up an intelligence unit with the throwaway name Force Research Unit (FRU) to implant moles into every level of the IRA. Kevin Fulton was one of those operatives in FRU, providing inside intel on IRA operations to his handlers; intel, he was assured, that reached all the way to the Prime Minister’s office. He caught wind of the 1998 Omagh Bombing in advance and warned his handlers 48 hours ahead of time that an attack was about to take place. The decision was made not to stop the attack because to do so would have meant blowing the cover of one of their high-ranking IRA moles. Consequently, nothing was done and the bombing went ahead, claiming the lives of 29 civilians and injuring over 300. In the wake of the attack, the disgraced FRU became known as the Joint Support Group (JSG) and was redeployed to Afghanistan and Iraq to transplant their ‘anti-terror’ techniques to the streets of Baghdad and Basra. (See this article for the FRU/JSG story)

In 2005, British SAS officers dressed up as Arabs got into a shootout with Iraqi police. They were subdued, and their booby-trapped car, laden with ammunition, was seized. Rather than explain what the SAS officers may have been attempting to do, the British sent in six tanks to free the two prisoners from an Iraqi jail. (See the full story here).

In 2006, the dome of the Al-Askariya Mosque, one of the most important Shia Mosques in the world, was ripped apart by a bomb. The Sunnis had nothing to gain by staging this attack and inflaming the Shi’ite community in Iraq, but an increase in sectarian violence is the expected result. At the time, 27 year CIA veteran Ray McGovern said he believed western intelligence may have been behind the bombing. When the Mosque was bombed again the following year the Iraqis outright accused the U.S. ofs having done it in order to promote sectarian strife and keep the region Balkanized.

Just this year, intelligence analyst and investigative journalist Wayne Madsen revealed that American intelligence has been sending Afghan mercenaries into Iraq in order to kill and terrorize the local civilians and even American military.

Such stories, of course, are completely counter-intuitive, even nonsensical, to the average mind. When the P2OG game plan of provoking terror in order to fight the terrorists is revealed, however, it makes sense. This is the warped logic of one who succumbs to the idea that terror attacks are necessary to help protect us from terror.

The False-Flag Mentality

To say that there is no difference between musing about an attack to imagine its possible “beneficial” consequences and actually making that attack happen would be wrong. But to say that such a leap is unfathomable or without precedent would be equally erroneous.

With P2OG in our own time and Operation Northwoods half a century ago, the American military has shown that it is willing and able to commit acts of terrorism in order to “win” a greater war. It would be a disservice to our country if we were not to question our leaders when they come up with plans of such unspeakable moral bankruptcy, and it is equally necessary to rebuke those who start down this path of reasoning by declaring the necessity or helpfulness of a terrorist attack. Once one has made that decision to welcome terrorism for its transformative political power, one has opened the doorway to false-flag terrorism and the sacrifice of innocent civilians.

Perhaps it is no surprise that Glenn Beck seemed to hardly even blink as Scheuer made his outrageous comments. Beck himself seems to share in this false-flag mentality whereby the trauma of a major terror attack is actually something to rejoice in (cf. his entire “9/12 Project” premise). It can only be hoped that when and if a commentator is to make such thoughtless and potentially terroristic comments as those made by Scheuer (and Bykofsky and Rumsfeld) the interviewer will have the wherewithal to call them on it.

I confess that I have a strong affinity for the movie National Treasure, in all its Nick Cage glory — it’s got awful jokes, historical references and some intrigue. That’s generally enough to keep me entertained. What if, though, the premise wasn’t that far off?

For those who have never seen the movie — the premise is that there’s treasure passed down from the Masons (formerly the Knights Templar), to the American founding fathers. Some of the founding fathers, knowing that greed would tempt even the most moral of its new leaders, hid the treasure and dispensed clues to its whereabout throughout the country that would be recognizable only to a select few Masons.

Jefferson was known to be a huge fan of codes and cyphers, and a WSJ article announced today that a coded letter sent to the Declaration author has finally been decoded. While I wouldn’t go checking the back of the Declaration for a hidden treasure map, it does have my intrigue radar all aflutter. Who knows what’s hidden amongst the country’s treasures?

FFDshow is a DirectShow decoding filter for decompressing DivX, XviD, H.264, FLV, WMV, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, MPEG-4 movies. It uses libavcodec from ffmpeg project for video decompression, postprocessing code from mplayer to enhance visual quality of low bitrate movies, and is based on original DirectShow filter from XviD, which is GPL’ed educational implementation of MPEG4 encoder. FFDshow can be configured to display subtitles, to enable or disable various built-in codecs, to grab screenshots, to enable keyboard control, and to enhance movies with increased resolution, sharpness, and many other post-processing filters. It has the ability to manipulate audio with effects like an equalizer, a Dolby decoder, reverb, Winamp DSP plugins, and more. Some of the postprocessing is borrowed from the MPlayer project and AviSynth filters.

Hi everybody, I am sitting here in front of this PC studying Digital Transmission. This basically me

Hi everybody,

I am sitting here in front of this PC studying Digital Transmission. This basically means that I am studying how information can be sent over a channel (ex: a cable) in a discrete way (basically using bits). Now I want to write a very short example about what hard and soft decoding is.

Coding
Before sending bits to the channel, they are usually somehow coded. By coding the bits we want to make it easier for the receiver to localize errors which are likely to occur during our transmission (the most easy case to understand is the additive noise added by the channel). It is actually also possible to correct some of these errors. But this is not the topic now.

Decoding
If we code, we of course have also to decode in order to get the original information back. When you read about decoding techniques you will find Hard Decoding and Soft Decoding. The idea behind these two was not clear for me until I read a nice explanation. I will try to report this explanation with my own words here on the blog.

Useful concepts: metrics
It is important to understand what Hamming Distance and Euclidean Distance mean, especially applied to vectors. You can have a look at the following links:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamming_distance

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euclidean_distance

The example

Imagine we want to send 1 bit of information, either 0 or 1, over a channel. To make our system more robust, we decide to use coding. We use a very simple and straight-forward coding technique: we just repeat the bit 4 times. So if the bit we have to send is 0, we will actually send 0000, and if it is 1 we will send 1111. We decide that on our cable we will have +1 V (volt) if the bit to send is 1, and -1 V if the bit to send is zero.

Ok, let’s assume we like the number one and we want therefore to send a bit with value 1.

What we will actually send on the cable (=channel) is [+1V, +1V, +1V, +1V], four impulses of +1 V (the duration of these impulses is not really crucial for this discussion).

Our channel will introduce distortions, additive noise (AWGN) and all possibile mess. At the end, what we receive is [+1.1, -0.2, -0.1, -0.1]. Now, based on this, in the receiving phase we have to decide weather we sent a 1 or a 0. here is how the two decoders will act:

Hard decoder: it treats all bits separately. basically the received sequence is though to [+1, -1, -1, -1] and based on this we use Hamming metric to find out which sent sequence is nearer. As we basically have more negative values than positive ones, we conclude that the sent bit was a zero;

Soft decoder: it does not make a decision on each bit. First it sums up all the single bit values, obtaining +0.7. After this, the decoder looks which bit is, in an Euclidean way, nearer to this value. In this case of course +1 V is nearer to 0.7 V than -1 V. We therefore conclude that the sent bit was a one.

Both decoders use a Maximum Likelihood principle. They just use different metrics.

As we can see in this small example the soft decoder is able to decode the sent bit correctlym, while the hard decoder fails. It is usually true that soft decoders have better performance than hard decoders, but they are also usually more difficult to implement in practice.

Hope this helps somebody to understand better these concepts. I think I got it right now!

The simplest way to convert a byte array into a String in Java is to call the latter’s class c

The simplest way to convert a byte array into a String in Java is to call the latter’s class constructor. For example:

byte[] theByteArray = new byte {1,2,3};

String theString = new String(theByteArray);

However, a lot of byte data will not form a meaningful string unless encoded. Encoding and decoding is not provided in the standard Java packages. Encoding is provided in the sun.misc.* package but these should not be used as classes under this package can be modified or disappear without warning in new releases of Java. Fortunately, Apache have provided a solution in their commons library. See http://commons.apache.org/index.html.

We will use Base64 encoding as an example. Base64 encodes every 3 bytes of input into 4 bytes of output. It is used to encode photos or audio sent in emails and for usernames and passwords used for webpage authentication. The following code snippet illustrates how we convert a byte array into a Base 64 string:

// Apache commons Import.

import org.apache.commons.codec.binary.Base64;

public class Base64Encoding {

// The Base 64 Encoder.

private Base64 base64Encoder = new Base64();

public void doEncoding(byte[] byteArray)

{

// Using the Base 64 Encoder format the byte array as a Base64 String.

byte[] base64ByteArray = this.base64Encoder.encode(byteArray);

String theString = new String(base64ByteArray);

System.out.println(“The String is ” + theString);

}

I’m really excited — this is the first time a reader has asked me a question! Julia Lindsey as

I’m really excited — this is the first time a reader has asked me a question! Julia Lindsey asked about decoding job descriptions — reading between the lines to understand what the employer is really looking for. Here’s the question:

“Candidate must be…. self-starter and team player with a ‘can-do’ attitude in a fast-paced environment” That whole description lacks substance and doesn’t tell me what they’re REALLY looking for! All I get from that is that I should be perky and productive. Is there another way to de-code that sentence?

First, here’s an article that takes a humorous approach to job descriptions.

Now for the real answer.

Job descriptions should help you do two things:

Decide if you have the qualities and skills necessary for the job

Craft a targeted cover letter and resume to convince the employer that you possess those skills and abilities

Vague descriptions are problematic because they make doing both of those things harder. What does a “self-starting team player” do at work all day? How do you know if you’ll enjoy that? Perhaps more importantly, what does the employer think the “self-starting team player” should be doing at work, and how can you convey that in your cover letter and resume? In other words, what actions are associated with these nebulous phrases?

If the employer won’t provide the answer, generate it yourself. Make a list of actions associated with the “nebulous words,” and see if your past experiences have included any of them. Then make sure you highlight those experiences in your cover letter, resume and interview.

For instance, a self-starter is someone who doesn’t need to be coddled and takes matters into his or her own hands. But you wouldn’t just say, “I’m a self-starter. I don’t require much supervision or hand holding, and I can handle problems as they arise.”

Instead, give an example of self-starting behavior. Say something like, “When it comes to class projects — or projects in general — I’m a self-starter. I don’t wait for someone to hand me an assignment or whine when a problem comes up. For example, I took the lead on a semester-long public relations presentation by guiding the group to a topic and initiating the distribution of responsibilities. When our research component almost failed because of a low response rate, I took it upon myself to Facebook message over 100 people, which resulted in a 60% response rate and an A on the project.”

(Side tip: The methodology behind that paragraph is the same thing you’ll find in behavioral interviewing. That’s when the interviewer asks questions like, “Tell me about a time when you faced a challenge, took on a leadership role, etc.”)

It’s that basic advice of “show, don’t tell.” The trick is figuring out what to show. Here are two sites with more good decoding advice:

Decoding job descriptions (warning: PDF file)

How do you decode job descriptions? Have you ever misinterpreted a job description?
