Erich Kamperschroer, President van het DECT Forum gunt ons een blik in de nabije toekomst.

Een Europees initiatief
De DECT standaard is ontwikkeld door het ETSI (European Telecommunication  Standardization Institute) met de steun en goedkeuring van het ITU (International Telecommunication Union) voor wereldwijde verspreiding. Ondertussen is DECT aanvaard in meer dan 110 landen, wat niet altijd even gemakkelijk ging. “Tien jaar geleden was het ondenkbaar om een dergelijke standaard door te drukken in de VS,” aldus Erich Kamperschroer. “Standaarden hebben niet alleen een technische achtergrond, maar ze dienen ook belangen van de lokale industrie en iedere regio heeft er wel eens gebruik van gemaakt om haar industrie te beschermen. Met DECT 6.0 Interference Free Communication is daar verandering in gekomen. In 2004 heeft dan tenslotte het Amerikaanse FCC frequenties toegewezen voor DECT. Als gevolg daarvan heeft het DECT Forum verleden jaar de vooruitzichten voor de Noord-Amerikaanse markt aanzienlijk verhoogd.
Zo rekenen wij erop in 2009 bijna zeven miljoen eenheden in de markt te zetten, een groei met een factor tien ten opzichte van 2006.” Maar ook de Aziatische markt blijft niet achter, integendeel. Bedrijven uit Hong Kong en China hebben zich aangemeld als ‘full member’ en Asia-Pacific is goed op weg om een belangrijke promotor en afnemer te worden.

CAT -iq, ‘just in time’
“Met de verspreiding van internet en vooral de breedbandaansluitingen drong een toenadering van DECT tot IP zich op,” vervolgt Erich Kamperschroer. “Telecom is in vergelijking met IT eerder traag. Het is ook een dienst die al 130 jaar bestaat en die nooit super snelle of kortstondige veranderingen heeft gekend. CAT-iq is hier een uitzondering op. Amper op een jaar tijd hebben wij de belangrijkste standaardiseringsprocedures afgewerkt. De eerste CAT-iq toestellen komen op de markt in het derde kwartaal van dit jaar. Het is vooral onder druk van de operatoren van de vaste lijn dat de leden van het DECT Forum in een hogere versnelling zijn gekomen. Zij hebben ons voor het ultimatum gesteld om voor een alternatief te zorgen voor VoIP over WLAN. Belangrijke eis was dat de kwaliteit beter moest zijn dan deze van WLAN. De industrie heeft enkele miljoenen euro geïnvesteerd in WLAN, maar is ook tot de conclusie gekomen dat WiFi minder geschikt is voor spraak.
Autonomie maar ook reikwijdte, interferentievrije communicatie en veiligheid pleiten allemaal in het voordeel van CAT-iq. Dat de druk uit de hoek  van de vaste operatoren komt is niet verwonderlijk. Zij staan sterk onder druk van de mobiele operatoren, die trachten de vaste lijn af te schaffen. Voor internet is die dan weer aangewezen, zeker in ontwikkelde landen met een sterke kabelstructuur.”

Nieuwe diensten
Internet betekent nieuwe diensten en data. Nochtans is CAT-iq geen standaard om breedband data te transporteren. CAT-iq gebruikt een breedbandverbinding om een revolutionaire verbetering van de spraakkwaliteit te garanderen. Zo zullen luidsprekende toestellen van een totaal andere vormgeving op de markt komen voor handenvrije teleconferentie, die op heden alleen in zeer dure conferentie systemen zijn terug te vinden. Een marktonderzoek uitgevoerd door de werkgroep marketing van het DECT Forum heeft uitgewezen dat de residentiële gebruiker een heel andere gevoelservaring wil beleven met thuis telefoneren. Kwaliteit en dekking staan voorop, maar ook de eisen voor de vormgeving van de toestellen zijn anders. De trend naar minitoestellen met een ‘glossy’ design, die momenteel heerst in de mobiele telefonie, is geen prioriteit voor draadloos thuis telefoneren.

Via CAT-iq kunnen ook IP- audio en muziek doorgestuurd worden, een dienst die in de toekomst sterk zal gepromoot worden door de operatoren en die meer en meer tot hun core business behoort. ‘Click to dial’ is een andere veel gevraagde toepassing. CAT-iq telefoons zullen rechtstreeks toegang hebben tot de Gouden Gidsen maar ook tot andere publieke telefoonboeken. Een universele interface zorgt ook voor toegang tot de opkomende Web 2.0 toepassingen op het internet.

Home gateways
Fabrikanten van de volgende generatie gateways voorzien CAT-iq in te bouwen. De CAT-iq certificering is voor de klant een garantie voor interoperabiliteit en kwaliteit van de gebruikte toestellen, ongeacht het merk. Certificering betekent dat keuringscommissies deze interoperabiliteit hebben onderzocht en getest. Hiermee wordt CAT-iq de vervanger voor de vroegere GAP, die niet meer door alle fabrikanten wordt gerespecteerd. Het CAT-iq logo is voor de consument een bevestiging van interoperabiliteit en kwaliteit. Vooral de operatoren en service providers hebben sterk de nadruk gelegd op deze eis, omdat zij daardoor niet gebonden zijn aan een merk.

Publieke toegang
Volgens Erich Kamperschroer is het best mogelijk om CAT-iq ook in publieke hotspots te gebruiken, alles hangt af van het business model dat de service provider daarvoor opstelt. “Of de constructeurs van mobiele telefoons, die nu gekozen hebben voor een dual mode gsm/WiFi ook CAT-iq zullen volgen en lid worden van het DECT Forum is moeilijk te voorspellen. Gezien de  minder goede spraakkwaliteit van WiFi denk ik dat deze eerder bedoeld is voor MMS en  het downloaden van foto’s of videoclips. Voor alle constructeurs zou de software gedefinieerde radiochip, die alle standaarden en protocols softwarematig volgt de ideale oplossing zijn. Maar daar dromen wij als technici al jaren van. Voorlopig zullen wij nog moeten leven met de onvoorspelbaarheid van de markt, met het risico dat bepaalde R&D projecten nooit marktrijp worden.”

This week, Jeff Pulver is in Denver for the CableLabs Summer Conference and will be speaking on a HD Voice panel for the invitation-only event on Tuesday.

Since CableLabs is the non-profit R&D consortium for cable operators, it will be interesting to see what CableLabs and the bigger operators have to say about HD voice.  CableLabs has set standards for HD voice via DECT 6.0 and the cable box, with end-to-end G.722 carrying phone calls.

Cablevision has already weighed in with a hosted business HD voice solution for its corporate customers while other companies — Comcast in particular — are holding their cards very tightly indeed.

Mが雑誌で見て一目惚れ、ネットでオーダーした、MagicBox社のDECTコードレス電話機、「Colombo TWO」（£39.99）。箱は何故か受話器が２セットの「Colombo Twin」のものだが、買ったのは１セットの「Colombo Single」。色はホワイト、ブラック、コーラル（赤とオレンジの中間のような色）の3色で、Mは白を選んだ。マット（つや消し）な白とすべすべした手触り、レトロなデザインが可愛い。「Colombo」は、Chauhan兄弟が運営するロンドンのデザイン事務所・Chauhan Studioがデザイン。ドイツ・ハノーファーに拠点を置くデザイン振興のための国際組織、インダストリー・フォーラム・デザイン（International Forum Design、通称iF）が1953年から主催している、世界で最も権威のデザイン賞の一つである、2009年iFデザイン賞を受賞している。受話器がくの字型に曲がっているので、持ちやすく、話す時に顔にうまくフィットする。シンプルなデザインながら、留守番電話付き、ハンズフリー、10種類の着信音、100件登録できる電話帳機能、ナンバー・ディスプレイ、12分までの録音機能等々、いろんな機能が搭載されている。のだけれど、恥ずかしながら、取説アレルギーの私はいまだに単純に電話をかけることしか出来ない。。。

日本でも人気が出そうなデザインだけれど、DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) 規格は日本では使用されていない。残念ですね。

M fell in love with a cordless DECT telephone ‘Colombo TWO’ by MagicBox (£39.99) when he saw it on a magazine and ordered it online. The box is for ‘Colombo Twin’ with 2 handsets, for some reason, but we bought ‘Colombo Single’ with 1 handset. ‘Colombo’ was designed by Chauhan Studio, a London based design firm created by Chauhan brothers. It won 2009 iF product design award, one of the most important international product design award, which was introduced in 1954 and is annually conferred by the Hannover (Germany) based iF International Forum Design. M chose white among 3 colors (white, black, or coral) . Its retro design and smooth body with mat finish are very cute. The handset with angulated shape fits well to a face when on the phone and is easy to hold. It looks just a simple phone but has many useful features such as answering machine, handfree capability, 10 ringtones, 100 number phonebook, caller display with 50 entry call log, 12 minutes digital recording time and so on. But so far what I can do is just to make a simple phone call – I hate to read a manual…

Every now and then, some hacker or researcher discovers a major security gap in an existing protocols, used all over the place. We knew that Bluetooth was considered ‘open’ some time ago, wireless protocols are a running gag, and now it’s the widely used DECT’s turn.

A group of German researchers found out sime time last year that the DECT algorithm – DECT Standard Authentication Algorithm, or DSAA – was not as unbreakable as assumed for some time. Not a real surprise, and not a real fear though – is it? I mean, what kind of conversations would you have that are ‘not for my ears’, right?

But what if your banking details are ‘war-DECT-ed’?

All sorts of hardware use the DSAA for communication, not just your home phone or a baby monitor. Portable cordless payment terminals, used in airports, restaurants, and shops use the DSAA as well. We are just waiting for the first war-DECT-ed creditcard fraud to show up in the news. Wonder how long the banks will allow themselves to use a 15-year old, never upgraded protocol.
