Maintaining an in-house email system involves major appraisal of security risks and implications for the smooth running of any business. This can involve activity far beyond the task of installing and maintenance of Microsoft Exchange systems – it involves a major focus on the security required to ensure your Exchange Server stays up and running effectively.

Either way, you need protection – and now’s the time to get it. Any business, even a sole trader, cannot afford to be without anti-virus protection in today’s corporate environment. Webmail and VPNs Webmail is the function whereby your staff has no need to sacrifice remote working. Firewalls and Perimeter Security Ignoring the complexities, the logic of a good firewall is to configure a separate, dedicated security appliance as a first and major first line of defence between the wider internet and your mail server.

Being a Protestant and a Particular Baptist, I don’t go much for the building as far as it being essential for worship. Don’t get me wrong, having a dedicated building to meet in is very helpful and useful, but if you are to have a building it needs to lend itself for the purpose, being completely functional as such and efficient in terms of the funding for it (it is far more profitable to use what money you have in carrying out the mission, than building a facade of religion).

Having said all that, the building in this picture is certainly an impressive one. It is a grand old building (as far as ‘old’ goes in relatively young Australia), rich in history, as it contains many historical items of interest.

The building pictured is that of the Newcastle Cathedral (Church of England). As grand as it looks, it is hardly the bastion of Evangelical Protestantism that one would have hoped for. Any true semblance of Evangelical Christianity that it may have borne witness to has long gone from its walls.

Few games thrive especially on hype and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 would typically be such a gam

Few games thrive especially on hype and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 would typically be such a game where just its name alone would be enough to sell millions of copies. However, unlike the other hype trains, every time MW2 hits front page on a gaming news/blog site, instead of excitement there seems to be controversy. Unfortunatly for the publisher Activision and the developer Infinity Ward, the controversies usually put them in a very negative light. Perhaps we can joke that Activision is getting marketing tips from Rockstar North but a lot of the new stories aren’t caused by Activision but by despicable gaming pirates.

The most recent controversy is regarding the leaked gameplay footage of a massacre in LAX which the player can choose to take part of, being a part of terrorist NPCs. It’s a brutal footage that has become viewable to public (at least for a short while before reaction from Activision) thanks to the typical European gamer that is not ashamed of having illegally downloaded the game and who is thus willing to post his recorded footage on YouTube. Infinity Ward is wise in allowing this level to be skippable since this really is very emotionally provocative.

The political climate regarding terrorism in the Middle East – especially from the American perspective – has been a loaded one and so a level forcing players to mow down civilians along with a group of terrorists has more implications than many gamers seem to realize. Majority of comments from gamers seem to follow the sentiment “oh, it’s just a game; if you can’t stomach it, you’re a pussy” but I don’t think anyone can really deny just how uncomfortable and stirring it is to be put into such a situation, virtual or not. But this is exactly what Infinity Ward is going for. After all, in that level, you’re not playing as a terrorist per se but as a CIA agent infiltrating the terrorist circles so in order to not blow his cover, he is forced to participate in this massacre. It’s a powerful emotional situation but can it be too burdensome? Personally, I feel that it would be so I will admit that I myself will probably choose to skip the level but the important thing is that IW allowed such an option. But of course, the controversy remains because if majority of gamers find this level to be fun, then the messages MW2 conveys to those gamers would definitely be problematic.

Modern Warfare 2 thus is an odd case of being extremely hyped but every time more information about it is revealed (e.g. third-person multiplayer mode, no dedicated servers on the pc version, dlc already ready to be released…), the hype level seems to decrease, not increase. This is totally the opposite of how hype trains are supposed to work. Controversies for games such as Grand Theft Auto actually increase the amount of attention and hype the game receives but in the case of Modern Warfare 2, controversy seems to be a very, very bad thing. For one, the boycott petitioned against this game is bigger than any previous gaming boycotts in history, and unfortunately for Activision and Infinity Ward, the boycott is a logical and powerful one, one which I find myself agreeing to.

Of course, all the controversies in the world will not prevent MW2 from selling millions and millions but I jus wanted to point here that I, like many people out there, get less and less excited about this game the more I hear and read about it. And what’s worse is the fact tha I personally wasn’t THAT interested in this game in the first place.

And what’s worse is the fact tha I personally wasn’t THAT interested in this game in the first place.

We don’t get much Alcopop coverage on drowned in sound… Not a lot indeed. But it is with proud faces and handsome grins that I’d like to point to their most recent single of the week column (occupied by the Candle Thieves), point an outstretched thumb at the offending article and say – y’know, we’re on wotcha.

The review is nice enough, with the reviewer feeling “confident it will appeal to those of you mourning the likes of Aberfeldy. Or those with a fondness for perky ditties what are darker than they first seem”. She goes on, “because this song is actually all about how we’re all going to die. So not quite as cute as it sounds.”

But kinda cooler than the article itself is the way it happened… Step forward Andre Wonder (PR guru helping le Candle Thieves) who responded to reviewer Wendy Roby’s power-hungry offer to make a track ‘single of the week’ if “it was sung down the phone to her” – by bloody doing it (video below)! His voice is not quite as heart-achingly beautiful as TCT Scott’s, but fair play on the effort old chap.

For his next trick Andre will be burping Stagecoach’s We Got Tazers to Jools Holland for a slot on next weeks show…. Maybe

vThe problem with these compromises is that while they may provide savings, they prevent you from ha

vThe problem with these compromises is that while they may provide savings, they prevent you from having a certain degree of freedom and reliability. That is why it may be preferable to acquire the benefits of a dedicated server instead, which as its name implies, involves leasing an entire server under the name of the client or organization. True, you will spend more, but the investment in one can be well worth it.

A dedicated server, as its name implies, means that your site data does not share the same hardware space of the data of another client. This means that in aspects regarding hardware and software configuration, you can make specific requests about the server and customize it to your interests. Simply put, the group managing the server does not need to deal with any conflict of preference between you and another client.

Your business may have specific needs regarding the operating system or the kind of scripts that should be forbidden on your server. By foregoing the option of shared hosting, you end up with greater autonomy. This is a boon that should not be taken for granted, as sometimes the ability of a server to process your company’s transactions is limited by the resources available to it that have not been consumed by another client.

A dedicated server also offers you the option of running multiple related sites for your company on a single hardware space. This is a strategic benefit as it means that you can coordinate the different arms of your business. For example, by sharing one space, your sales department can coordinate with distribution more efficiently, especially if both departments use the same data toolsets.

Also, the use of a dedicated server for one’s business affords a greater amount of security and privacy than in other forms of hosting. Since the web site of the business in question will not be sharing hardware space with other clients, the risk of security breaches or information sharing between that business and those of the other clients’ is far less likely.

The only potential drawback of a dedicated server is the expense you will incur. This is to be expected given the kind of administrative premium you are acquiring and the fact that the hosting service will be providing a server to one client (i.e. you) rather than many clients. As such, the high price offsets the ‘lost’ business and the cost of the service you are being provided. Still, these expenses are worth it, when one considers the benefit of greater efficiency, more autonomy, and better security.

One of my co-workers told me that she was so proud of me for coming back to work and staying strong

One of my co-workers told me that she was so proud of me for coming back to work and staying strong and getting the job done. She said that I was very strong.

Some days, I feel strong… some days I feel weak. Sometimes weakness leads to strength. Occasionally, strength dissolves to weakness. Grief is a strange beast.

Earlier this week, I noticed that the one jeep tire was low. John has cool caps for the jeep that are green if the tire is full and turn red if it is low. The passenger rear was 1/2 red.

The evening got off to a rough start (not including the tire). I went to take Nathaniel out while I fed. He enjoys playing with rocks. When you’re a year old, it’s really cool to pick up rocks & put them on a plate. Don’t ask me why, but it is. It has occupied him for days! As long as he doesn’t eat them, get dust in his eyes, or get too filthy, I’m fine with it. Happy toddler= happy mom!

Well, it was raining when I headed out… just a drizzle, but a COLD drizzle. Not weather that a youngster needed to be out in if it could be avoided. So, I stuffed Nathaniel in the pack & play on the porch and decided to turbo feed.

Nathaniel promptly decided that was not appropriate… he’d rather be in the drizzle plating rocks. So, he screamed…. and screamed… and screamed…

I fed quickly.

Then debated the pros and cons of filling the tire. I needed gas in the Subaru and didn’t have time to stop for gas. I could chance the tire. But… probably not the smartest move. Adding air to a tire is complex enough… attempting to change a tire is out of my league for right now.

So, I decided to fill the tire. John had recently gotten a new air compressor. He’d gotten it with the idea that it would be easy for me to use.

Well… he over-estimated my abilities. I’ve tried to use it several times and end up letting more air out of the tires than I’m putting in. I’ve quit in disgust several times with the John Deere tire. Threw up my hands and found a man to help.

Well… that evening there was no man… there was no help.

So, I figured that I had to be smarter than the air compressor… it can’t be THAT difficult.

It started poorly… the tire gauge was loosing air. I was loosing patience. Nathaniel was screaming…. and screaming… and screaming.

There I was… sitting on the ground in the cold drizzle, with a baby screaming and no help… loosing air. I thought… this is my life… this is reality. I was so frustrated. I wanted to cry, but what good would that do.

Then somehow I got the positioning correct and air went into the tire. I stopped, re-capped, and took the baby inside. I even had time for a shower before work. Everybody lived. Tire was filled. Life went on. I accomplished something. I don’t feel like I was proficient and learned a new skill. I think luck and persistence is what got me through that task.

In the end… it’s whatever works. I know that my new life won’t always be pretty. It won’t always be easy. It won’t ever be the same. I will have happiness. I will have deep sadness and loneliness. But, life continue till the end (how is that for a profound statement). Life is to short to wallow in despair. Anger is a wasted emotion (Thanks, Steve, for reminding me). Hopefully, I have a lot of living left to do.

Most importantly, I never want to be in the position where Nathaniel grows up and tells people about his childhood and says, “My mom gave up.” “My mom quit.” “My father’s death left my mother in shambles.” I want him to grow up and say that he had a great childhood and his mother raised him well. I want him to know how much his father loved him… loved us… and what a great person he was. I hope that Nathaniel grows up to be a lot like his father… a good person… moral… ethical… true to himself… honest… hardworking… courageous… with an awesome sense of humor… a thinker… a fighter… confident… faithful… committed… loyal… intelligent… dedicated… and so many other things that John was…

The sun rises, the sun sets, time passes on… how you chose to use your time is up to you. I don’t want life to pass me by. Onward & upward.
