TIME – WASTE. Wasting Time. Ein Wortspiel, das Bezug zu einem zentralen Element von Lara Dhondts Arbeiten nimmt: Tagträumen – ́dérive ́ und ́flanerie ́. Gleichzeitig verweist es auf die Art der Materialien aus denen ihre Werke entstehen, wie auch auf deren begrenzte Existenz.

YOUR SPACE OR MINE? – ist das Leitmotiv von Lara Dhondts Untersuchungen zum No- madentum des urbanen Lebens. Als theoretische Studie begonnen, entwickelten sich die Nachforschungen von Lara Dhondt schnell zu einer visuellen Analyse über das Konzept von Rückzugsorten und von «sheltered daydreaming». Lara Dhondt untersucht die Aspekte von Zufluchtsorten und schafft dabei einen Schauplatz elementarer Emotionen wie Angst, Klaustrophobie, dem Bedürfnis nach Sicherheit oder eben einem persönlichem Rückzugs- ort. Der intime Raum bezeichnet die grundlegende Notwendigkeit einer (Un)Möglichkeit der Zuflucht und des Verweigerns. Inspiriert von Gaston Bachelards Poetics of Space und Deleu- zes Philosophy of Nomadism ist es der poetische Gedanke, der die zentrale Rolle in der Ent- wicklung von intimen Raum einnimmt. Genau das spiegelt sich auch in Lara Dhondts Werk SHELTERS OF REFUSE wieder, wo der poetische Ansatz mehr zählt als der dokumentarische oder formelle. Obwohl der Rückzugsort sehr schnell zur desolaten Ruine wird, funktioniert er genauso als Ort in dem Tagträume entstehen. Dieses Tagträumen ist dann eine der er- habensten Arten um Zeit zu verschwenden und sich seiner selbst bewusst zu werden. Man könnte sagen, diese räumlichen Abgrenzungen sind Ausfahrten, sind Wege der Distanzie- rung. «Sheltered daydreaming» als Methode sich zu verweigern. SHELTERS OF REFUSE zeigt denZufluchtsortalseineelementare,primitiveSkulptur. ManchedieserOrtehabenetwas von einer Barrikade. Sie dienen der Gegenwehr und der Revolte. Die Idee der Verweigerung und das Interesse an der subjektiven und relativen Dimension des Raumes sind wichtige Element dieser Arbeit.

After the last Italo Disco/80ties performance at N214 (Stuttgart), Rob Lando & Illy Bidol were so fascinated about this enchanting city that they decided to move here. Reasons for this arbitration were on the one hand to start up with an amazing blast of so called “Tanzveranstaltungen” where they want to share their mutual love of Italo Disco with the audience and on the other to join their passion of handmade dipped candles. Secondary Rob and Illy want to shoot their first esoteric candle dip tutorial on VHS here in Stuttgart. But anyway it dosen’t really matter what that slick dudes do in their leisure time. Much more important is that one special thursday where they’ll play some passionate and sophisticated Italo Disco & 80ties which probably will leave some unconscious girls in front of the DJ-booth. So if you are homeless, lonely, lush or even be addicted to such hilarious music you have to be there or be square.

we leave the realms of total breakbeat-chaos for a while and return to the straighter side of beats – the so called ‘4-to-the-floor’ rhythm.

for those of you who don´t know: 4-to-the-floor means the classic dancebeat you can find in most of the house/techno/disco/trance music with a straight 4/4 count bassdrum.

I´ve got two different examples for you from my first alias ‘FX-INTRUDER’, which I already mentioned in an older post.
the stuff I did under this alias was more oldschool kind of chicago house/detroit sometimes mixed up with acid and later aswell with experimental stuff like glitch or idm.

the first tune named ‘cure’ comes from 1994 and features minimally arranged oldschool chicago house with detroit and deephouse elements – it was also recorded very oldschoolish only with analogue-equipment.
FX-INTRUDER – Cure

the second tune named ’smooth riot’ is from 1998 and features more the nuskool kind of house, as it begins very unhousy with a distorted halftime breakbeat and glitchy noises and later on morphs into stomping detroit/deephouse spiked with glitch/idm. this track is made on a complete digital environment. it was also the last tune I did under the alias ‘FX-INTRUDER’.

This past weekend many heads hit up The Vagabond where the Back Door Bamby crew brought us Frankie Knuckles. I arrived at around 1am and the crowd was feelin Frankie. Frankie played till 6 am granting the crowds encore wishes several times. Also this night celebrating his birthday was heartbeat of the Vagabond “Carmel” blowing out his candles right from the dj booth alongside Frankie. Putting the icing on the cake the “Maestro” Frankie Knuckles closed by playing a gorgeous remix of Chris Issak’s – Wicked I think it could have been the Quentin Harris one but still not confirmed if it was. He played this track twice and it was the perfect one to close with. Frankie Knuckles served it up. He also played his remix of Depeche Mode’s -”Wrong” pleasing many.

Es war Alla Farmer “Deep Sweet Kiss” was mich auf die Jungs (sag ich jetzt einfach mal) aufmerksam gemacht hat.

Essen, Germany may not have established itself on the map of musical creativity that stretches from Chicago to Berlin and back, but it’s suffice to say the unassuming German city has provided Manuel Tur with enough inspiration to name his debut album after its area code.

It may not be 90210, but if it’s helped provide the backdrop for this slice of soulful deepness then we’ll just have to choose coal mines and a second rate football team over Tango babes and beaches. Having released his first EP at the age of 16, Manuel’s notched up a rather handsome looking back catalogue in the last 6 years. Influenced by artists as diverse as Ian Pooley and Pépé Bradock, two of his most high profile releases to date have been his Freerange debut Acorado and Deviate (on Drumpoet), the former wormed its way into the record boxes of everyone from Karizma to Ben Watt, and the latter being nominated for Beatport’s Best Deep House Track. Manuel also picked up nominations for Beatport’ Best Deep House Artist and Best Newcomer at the Ibiza DJ Awards. Recently he has been making forays into the live arena, working with Dessous artist Langenberg under the moniker Ribn to create rough and ready analogue sounding house and techno. Their debut has just been released on Josh Wink’s Ovum label.

Manuel’s debut album, 0201, however, is a departure from the more dancefloor friendly productions he is known for; instead downtempo and abstract sounds sit happily alongside broken beat infused deep house and filtered French disco. Avoiding the classic dance music trap of creating an album of hastily thrown together 12” highlights, this is beautifully constructed slice of deeply atmospheric delights, with a beginning, middle and end your English Lit. teacher would be proud of.

It’s not a dancefloor album – although some of the tracks would certainly make an impression at any afterhours worth its salt – the penultimate Radial especially, with its soaring melody and driving bassline. Rather, it was literally made in a bedroom, for listening to in a bedroom. 0201 harks back to other great ‘bedroom house’ albums such as Etienne de Crecy’s Super Discount or Cassius’s 1999. The dramatic sounding piano keys of the opening track quickly give way to a bassline and chords with echoes of French filtered disco at the height of its powers. Woven in with the darker and more emotive deep house sounds of now, Manuel has managed to create something that feels both fresh and nostalgic. There’s no denying the strong US influence on the album too, as Manuel does his bit for intercontinental relations – marrying soulful house vocals with a more European sound. Golden Complexion features Mark ‘Blakkat’ Bell whose legendary Shaboom label is another major inspiration for Manuel. Alexander East contributes on Will Be Mine turning in a sublime soulful delivery that shows why his distinctive sound has seen him work with the likes of Phonique,
Jimpster and Mazi.

The rich atmosphere and at times soundtrack-esque qualities to the album may be partly down to the huge variety of sounds that Manuel brings together on 0201. He explains that: “The whole album was made up from samples that I’ve been collecting for almost 10 years now and that I’ve put together like a jigsaw or ‘patchwork’, as is the title of the first track.” Obviously a true sound collector with one ear on the past and one eye on the future. The last track of the album Final Layer has the finality of the end of the road, or at least the end of the night, but you know you haven’t
heard the last of this one.
