Embarrassingly for Gordon Brown, who sees himself as financial saviour and leader of the world, the only member country of the G20 still in recession is the UK.  Gordon is currently chairing the G20, which adds to the embarrassment.  The Times of India blames the UK’s debt burden for the divergent performance.  Who do we blame for the the debt burden?

Guido imagines it was an awkward breakfast in the Bowe household this morning. Last night former Labour MEP David Bowe was beaten in to an embarrassing third place in the selection process to become the PPC for Pudsey – by his wife.  They don’t seem to be a particularly successful power couple, Helen Bowe got eleven votes to her spouses 10. The successful candidate got one hundred and twenty-seven.

At least it will make for an interesting Christmas letter this year. Better than news of the Homer and Bart the guinea pigs…

Guido wandered into the Fabian’s Christmas party on the terrace of the Houses of Parliament. The booze, Guido noticed with some amusement, was sponsored by Serco, the private-sector outsourcing outfit.  That irony would see the Fabian’s founders, the Clause Four authoring Webbs, spinning in their graves.  Sunda Katawala told the assembled drinkers that Fabian Society membership was at an historic high, which is quite an achievement  by him given Labour Party membership is at an historic low.

Yvette Cooper was the star turn, Guido was mesmerised by her green leather boots so didn’t follow the thread of her argument closely, think it involved Etonians eating babies and David Cameron personally slaughtering first borns at Sure Start centres.  She did a lot of that head-nodding thing she does for emphasis.

The former Defence Minister Eric Joyce seemed demob happy and confirmed just how miffed Cathy Newman was when Guido beat her to getting his resignation story out.

When the booze ran out Guido slipped into the Stranger’s Bar for some subsidised Guinness (think of it as a tax-rebate) and chatted with blogging Labour MPs Greg Pope (also demob happy) and Tom Harris.  Late in the evening a tired and emotional Peter Kilfoyle exploded at the bar “You’re Guido Fawkes, you’re Guido Fawkes” ranting bitterly about a story exposing him for paying his daughter’s firm out of expenses.  He tried to have Guido thrown out of the bar, shouting to the patient barman about the injustices of this blog’s editorial policies.  Guido was a little worried that the red-in-the-face Kilfoyle was going to have a coronary…

It’s official, Texting while driving will be illegal in Colorado as of tomorrow. This is really a good idea.

nown as Oyster, the device has been officially launched by Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond MP, MSP at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney.

It is currently the world’s only hydro-electric wave energy device producing power and is now producing power by pumping high pressure water to its onshore hydro-electric turbine. This will be fed into the National Grid to power homes in Orkney and beyond. A farm of 20 Oysters would provide enough energy to power 9,000 three bedroom family homes.

Microsoft has released a new utility “Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool” which allows you to create a bootable USB drive to install Windows 7. It also allows you to create bootable DVD.

After downloading and installing the tool, when you launch it, it’ll ask you to select the path where you have stored Windows 7 ISO file:

Provide the ISO file path and click on “Next” button. Now it’ll ask you whether you want to create bootable USB drive or DVD:

Click on the desired button. If you select “USB Device”, it’ll ask you to insert the USB device. If your USB device is compatible, it’ll be automatically detected by the tool:

Click on “Begin Copying” button. Now you’ll be prompted to format the USB device. Accept the confirmation:

That’s it. The tool will start copying the installation files to USB device:

At last, it’ll show a message that “Bootable USB device created successfully”.

Tax ducking, bed hopping Zac Goldsmith is in hot water. Guido  promotes and pursues the minimisation of taxes, but it is a bit risky for a PPC seeking public office.   Zac says he hasn’t profited from non-domicile, that he volunteers more tax than he needs to and he gives oodles of cash to charidee.  Nevertheless the reason Goldsmith shouldn’t be allowed to get away with this is his rank and blatant hypocrisy.

If he had been a long term advocate for lower taxes, then his stance would be understandable.  Zac has done quite the opposite, he wants more taxes, ridiculous and unpopular green taxes that would cripple car drivers and frequent flyers.  How can someone who keeps his fortune sewn up in offshore trusts credibly in all conscience author a report calling for taxes to increase?  How green is the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) from which his farm receives thousands of pounds in subsidies from the taxpayer?  Without a hint of irony he will tonight give a speech in Piccadilly on the subject of how to share our collective wealth.  Will that include sticking it in the Caymans?   Clearly taxes are for non-environmentally-conscious people.

If Eton is a political conspiracy rather than merely a school, it is doing quite well.  It boasts nineteen former PMs as well as three old boys in the current Tory shadow cabinet, plus of course the probable next PM.  It’s clearly still the establishment’s choice, though there was a time when people questioned whether another Old Etonian could ever become Prime  Minister again.  Fettes has since lost its grip on Downing Street.

Last week Lord Pearson OE was elected leader of UKIP.   Guido’s drinking buddy Chris Mounsey OE (of Devil’s Kitchen fame) was this weekend elected leader of the  Libertarian Party. Floreat Etona indeed…

Os pregões na Europa e no Brasil abriram em queda, mas foram revertidas ao longo do pregão. Os temores iniciais de que um provável default provocaria grande impacto no ainda fragilizado sistema financeiro foram se dissipando, fazendo com que o Ibovespa fechasse quase na máxima do dia, a 67.082 pontos, alta de 1,04%. As bolsas americanas voltaram a abrir hoje, operando somente na parte da manhã, e ajustaram seus preços devido aos acontecimentos na quinta-feira, encerrando o pregão em queda. O índice S&P 500 fechou a 1.091 pontos, baixa de 1,72%.
Os destaques das ações foram: (i) Cemig PN, em alta de 4,41%, liderando as altas após o resultado do leilão de linhas de transmissão. Esperava-se que a Cemig, qualificada para participar nos leilões, arrematasse algumas das linhas, o que acabou não acontecendo; (ii) Net ON, com alta de 3,33%, reagindo à possibilidade de ganho de mercado após a decisão da Justiça de leiloar as concessões da TV Cidade e Cable Bahia, que atuam nas cidades de Salvador, Aracaju, Recife, entre outras.

Let’s face it – everyone and their dog is out on tour nowadays – recession or not. And from the looks of this show – people still want to see their live shows.

The opening act was Default – a good band with several good songs. But let’s face it – these guys perform at the grand opening of a Walmart these days. If you tried hard enough, you could see them 15 times or more in Alberta this year (Calgary and area was probably 4-5). They had a decent set and played all the popular songs. The band seem out of sync tonight. The guitarist was coming in on songs early/late at times. They just didn’t seem on their A-game. And, scripted or not, the bass player throwing his bass down at the end of the set and leaving the stage in a hurry seemed to sum Default up quite nicely tonight. Solid B-.

The second act was The Used. They should be called The Used Up. Lead singer Bert McKracken has milked celebrity for all it was worth (cough Kelly Osbourne cough) and seems to have no tricks left up his sleeve. Dressed like a 5 year old without a parent around, Bert’s vocals were completely lost most of the time. The band played fine around him although the songs tended to sound the same across the board. I’m not sure why he kept roaming the stage between songs muttering B*tch, wtf? To himself with his back to the audience. Seriously? This is the persona you’ve created for yourself? He must not have heard – the majority at the back of the audience was done with him by the 3rd song and left to enjoy a smoke or other distraction. Lousy F.

Three Days Grace have a decent repertoire of music and their set list tonight spanned their three albums and then some. Most people in the crowd knew every word. They did a respectable cover of Fleetwood Mac’s The Chain. Their stage setup was simple yet functional. They did a good job.

However. They do no get an A+ for this show for moving the venue at the last moment from the Dome to the Corral without explanation. If they saw a utopia of 16,000 fans going to the show for them they should fire their management team. If this was why the event was moved – even worse. There was maybe 7,000 fans there tonight. They are not Nickelback. They are not big name. And signing The Used to the bill was a poor choice when the fan base was there to see mainstream rock.
That show earns them an A.
