Why do I age…. Why do I get sick and get diseases? Ever wonder? As we age we get more concerned with degenerative diseases. If you are young and aren’t concerned, you should be! But too many times people will do nothing to keep their bodies healthy UNTIL something happens to them. Why not start now? I have several suggestions, want to know some? Do you have some concerns …..

Are you the same person you were 1/2/3/4/5 year(s) ago. If so, is this not deleterious to your happiness?

If you are thinking about the same things, are you simply unable to solve (arise-to) these problems/puzzles/obstacles/opportunities? Growth(evolution) of a person is what brings new energy(s) to their pursuits. – Without excitement in your life how do you get out of bed?

When you do start working on these problem-sets, you must be prepared in order to succeed.

Preparation is achieved through trial and error (exploration, investigation, research). By simply thinking about growing and changing “your aims of success”, you will breathe urgency and shift-effort into embodying “better” “deeper” understanding in your area(s) of interest (no longer the same person thinking about the same things).

Practical. Actionable. Application

Awareness of how you can change is key. This can be accomplished with; a journal, what your targets are/will be, by noticing who you surround yourself with, who you are teaching/sharing with, who you are looking to for mentorship, etc.

Take the analogy of hitting a baseball.

If you connect just right you will hit the ball out of the park. If your timing is not perfect, you may hit a grounder, a double, or fly-out. BUT in order to know/feel/internalize and be able to understand the differences, you must have experienced each connection (swing).

So what is the Gram-Slam of life for you? Well that is individual, but the one universal truth is…When you execute consistently, when all of your experience/preparation comes together, you will be best prepared for that moment. After that moment that magic of evolution/growth will occur, and you will no longer be “the same person”.

-Practicing, gives the practitioner a chance to think about what it is they are pursuing. To focus intensely on the mechanics and processes.

-Performance, causes the practitioner to forcefully experience; fear, anxiety, uncertainty, urgency, growth.

In an adaptive, task oriented state you need not think but react.
Take a simple tool as the squat-belt. You never implement this tool until the loads are maximal (performance).

If you want to build a strong straight body while squatting, the belt will hurt your progression. Without the belt the body (muscles) (abdominal & erectors >upstream into the upper back) is taxed/strengthened greater. There is greater chance for error in alignment and efficiency (keeping center of mass over the support) while not implementing the belt . Therefore you actively think (practice) about the movement.

Then you introduce the belt while dealing with maximal loads. You purposefully enter a deeper action state. Simply you have a moment of fear, then commit and proceed to induce violent stimuli. A maximal squat is achieved only with mastery and a clear understanding of the task at hand. You must have practiced this many times over. No active thinking is necessary (it will get you injured).

How do I know this to be true?

Because even as a casual-playful maximal lifter, the personal difference between simple 250lb pause squats and 1 leg body squats vs. +400lb back squats is drastic (at a light 175 bw). There is no room for thought when the bar is bending on your back and all you can feel is your knees wanting to crash inward and your upper body collapsing under the bar and force of gravity (away from stability/alignment).

If you step into the training with no attention of practice vs. performance (thinking vs. reacting) you are missing the whole point. Tests are there, only as tools just like the squat-belt. But I never met someone who mastered quantum mechanics prior to algebra one.

COSMETICS
Did you know 80% of cosmetics contain paragons and phthalates, chemicals proven to increase the risk of cancer?
Baby power… BISHENOLS, PHTHALATES, PFAS,

KITCHEN
Most metal cooking pots, pans and bakeware…PAHS, DIOXINS, PCBS, PFOA, PFAS

Most blankets, plastics, foams, fabrics…BDE, FLAME RETARDANTS PBDE

ARE YOU TOXIC?
One of the biggest threats to out health is our own environment. Some toxins are easy to spot however most are invisible and undetectable to the average person.

We have poisoned our water, poisoned our air. We are poisoning our foods and we are doing that to allow industry to advance but in the process, we are in production hundreds and hundred of pollutants into our bodies. In particular we are worried about pesticides, herbicides on the fruits and vegetables that we eat. On the animal side concerned about growth hormones, steroids, antibiotics being injected in the food supply. Prescription drugs are now showing up in the water supply. They are showing up as arsenic, heavy metals, etc.

We have sterilized our top soil, the pesticides not only kill the living organisms that kill the farmers produce by eats the top soil and kills all the micro-organisms and bacteria that convert and inorganic rock mineral into an organic form for it to be absorbed and taken up by the plant.

For us to assume that we have a plethora of of food that we are not under nourished is really wrong because our food unfortunately is under-nourished. Our nutritionally bankrupt food and water combine with toxicity is wreaking havoc on our mental and physical health.

When are health is compromised we lack the energy and emotional stability to perform the daily functions of life. It is more difficult to stay fit and we experience premature aging to having astronomical medical bill, which can put a strain on our finances and ultimately the relationships that we cherish the most.

These factors can make us more susceptible to disease depriving us from the kind of life we deserve. The biggest problem with toxicity that exists is body inflammation. Toxins are stored in fat cells, which then can cause inflammation, which is the leading cause of heart disease, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, asthma and many other degenerative diseases. The “love handles” and “stomach pouch” around your waist could actually be toxic waste storage areas. Inflammation is strongly related to the foods and water we consume which are connected to high pH acid levels.

Highly toxic people exhibit the following:
·Chronic fatigue
·Heart disease
·Memory loss
·Premature aging of skin
·Skin disorders
·Arthritis
·Hormone imbalances
·Anxiety
·Headaches
·Emotional disorders
·Cancers
·Autoimmune disease
·Constipation and digestive tract issues

As toxins build up in your body the liver and digestive tract cannot process and eliminate them effectively because they are already not working at maximum levels. At this point you develop a condition called “toxic overload”. Some initial symptoms of toxic overload include lack of energy, depression, cravings for sugar, environmental allergies, food sensitivities, and excessive mucus production. Other signs of a toxic body are: foggy thinking, mood changes, constipation, sallow and saggy skin, respiratory concerns, joint aches, acne, eczema, psoriasis, and easily contracting colds, flu, and infections.

There are 80,000 toxins in our air, food and water and it doesn’t matter if you are lean or not, you are going to absorb these in your body. A recent study from the CDC 2009 revealed the presence of 219 toxic chemicals in people of all ages. The CDC also reported that we are spending aver $75 billion a year on weigh-related deceases. We are putting all kinds of garbage in our bodies and being exposed to environmental, and emotional toxins and our bodies are then accumulating fat to protect us.

If you think obesity is only a problem in adults. Think again. Obesity is a huge and growing problem in children. We are producing obese children. That’s horrible. For the first time our children aren’t going to live as long as their parents. Hundreds of thousands of deaths per year are linked to obesity. The 2010 CDC reports that the top three leading causes of death in America is Heart disease, Cancer, Respiratory Disease.

In addition to an unhealthy diet and lack of exercise many scientists now believe that “toxic overload” is contributing to weight gain, obesity, accelerating aging and cancer. Even fit and lean athletes with out weight problems still need to be aware about what toxins (environmental, food and water) are doing to their long-term health.

All of these things are adding up and suddenly there’s a health problem so what can we do about it. There is not one product that can single handedly remedy all of our problems so it’s imperative that we get serious improving and supporting our health with nutritional cleansing, replenishing and combating pre-mature aging. Our bodies are fabulous and amazing they have a liver to detoxify and kidneys to clear stuff out and excrete it, but they are over-loaded. Unless you are living in a bubble you need to be doing something. The body has a great capacity to heal itself if you give it what it needs and allow the time for it to happen.

Each of us are exposed to impurities everyday and for this reason it is crucial for us to cleanse ourselves to ensure good health. No matter what your weight is your can be healthier. For people who are healthy, athletes, it’s amazing what the impact is their body composition get’s better their workouts are easier. Their stamina is greater, their recuperation is faster.

We change the oil in our cars and trucks so they don’t break down, and change the filters in our heating and air conditioners to keep them running properly. We brush our teeth to prevent decay. We seem to understand the concept of prevention and protecting our investments yet we ignore our most important asset, our body and over look the food and water we consume.

Over 70% of our body is water and 25% is solid mass. We tend to look over the fact that we are obsessed with food and dieting when we should seriously take a look at the water we are not drinking enough of or drinking water that is not good or optimal for us or for the environment.

50-75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. It is the root cause of many diseases, that aging is a function of cellular water loss. Drinking the proper amount (at least half and ounce per pound) and maximum quality of water, water that is hexagonal, alkaline, and high in antioxidants allows for maximum detoxification and removal of wastes to occur. Detoxifying gives us a break and provides our bodies with ability to help our organs to clear out the junk. The removal of toxic build-up and impurities it’s just the first step. It is also essential to replenish the body with the necessary minerals (sodium, potassium, magnesium, enzymes, electrolytes, amino acids, fatty acids that are needed on a cellular level. If we clear out the junk and put in good nutrition then we get a healthy cell and a healthy body.

Please help share this information with your friends and family to learn more about this problem and introduce you to more conscious ways of living your best, eating and drinking the best for your body.

The following are not new technologies;

Dumbbell/Band (pre/re-hab) – Barbell (squat & deadlift) – Rings (dip, muscle-up) – High Bar (pullup, front lever) – Parallel Bar (dip, pushup, handstand, planche, l-sit) – Rope (climbing) – Stretching Table/Stick (flexibility, r.o.m) – Kettlebell (conditioning) – Swimbikerun (vo2, aerobic base)

If you do not use these tools in your training weekly, then you are making it more difficult than it needs to be.

Go to yoga? Great, but your lower body needs more weight. Go to spinning? Wonderful, but your upper-body needs more overhead work (shoulder health). Do aerobic classes (step, strike, bootcamp). Ok, although these by design train many people at once using low-skill movements.

You need a plan that will bring body awareness and strength through all r.o.m’s and varied dynamic loads. You will never achieve this and you will never meet all the demands of life if you do not incorporate all of the ancient technologies in your practice.

All of the students I work with (young, old, novice, mastered) are refining these skills every class .

The only thing that science is going to get us is stricter restriction (down the rabbit hole you go). Remember the matrix, and the slush cereal mix? With all the essential amino acids, phytochemicals, polyphenols, micro nutrients, etc. You guys are busy futzing with the manusha while I’m living in the realm of reality where practicality and logic take precedence. Basing your life of a mice studies and laboratory formuals? Have fun with that. Look back even 100 years and you find all the answer you seek (based in scientific rigor). The truth is near…

All that we see is a blip. In a person’s lifetime, it was all created. The buildings, the internet, the transportation (infrastructure, vehicles, operations), etc. The only constants are; Atmosphere, Water, Land, Animals, People. (Anthropology.Cosmology.Biology.etc.)

Don’t believe me just do your own research.

We live in a system so infant (underdeveloped). We have hardly entered puberty, let alone maturity. Next time you get in your car, ask yourself this. Did the following exist even 90 years ago? Before transport deemed feasible the mass Production/Consumption of today.

So what I’m I saying? Acknowledge you have been born into this program. Next time you go download updates for your O.S. Make sure the bugs and hackers were scrubbed/detected and quarantined to the secure vault. The disingenuous members of the greater society receive the most face time. The masses do not comb this information with the scrupulous mindset needed to find the truth.

The body is like an engine. If your program design is set for power output your in for inevitable and earlier repairs (injury.disease.sickness). What happens when you press the pedal to the floor in your vehicle. Rpm’s go up. You burn fuel at a quicker rate. You increase torque on the frame. You cause the transmission stress and ultimately shorten the life-span of the engine.

Would it be folly to apply this to your body?

If your programing has; max weight this. As many times that. As long and fast/far as you can travel. Every Single Time you train… Find a new coach/program. You will only breakdown or wreck. It is the one possible outcome with this approach (Your telomeres will thank you).
Note: some conditioning (past anaerobic threshold) is essential, but it is not the basis of lasting functionality.

I watched Terry Pratchet’s ‘Choosing to Die’ which was broadcast in 2011.

Terry Pratchet has Alzheimer’s Disease and is considering the possibility of ending his own life on his terms. As far as he is concerned, when he has lost his words to write novels then his life is no longer worth living. In the documentary he follows people with degenerative illnesses, wishing to commit assisted dying. It is a touching insight into how these people suffer and their cry for help that the UK government are ignoring.

With one particular couple, Pratchet goes to Dignitas and witnesses a death.

Pratchet speaks with family and friends of the sufferers and how there is general support for the wellbeing of the individual wishing to end their lives. The relatives all admit they don’t want them to die, but at the same time they do not wish for undignified suffering and ultimately death.

What I found interesting is how calm the ‘patients’ are. There is a definite willingness to die amongst the people shown which only makes me think about how we all are aware of our mortality. And some more than others who face a sufferable death.

Every single day I interface with people online and in person about wellness. So many are one toe dipped into the water. Feeling sssllllooowwwwlllyyyy whether the temperature is just right for them to dive in and take a swim (to see if they will drown or float). Please. Do not be a spectator to hard work. You must risk not knowing and become vulnerable to the conditions (just jump in).

Recognize the truth. And THE TRUTH IS 9 of 10 people whom I come across (including; trainers, doctors, athletes, etc.) simply HAVE NO CLUE. The worst part is, once their ignorance’s are revealed they retreat, deciding the water is just to cold for them (bur, ice-cubes down the back of your shirt). Man o man. what new/old fallacies I will find tomorrow.

What is it about people who Try to Commit – Try to Decide – Try to Believe that a change is near/possible. Instead of sharply acting on change (diving in).

Here is a simple correlation. Remember the last time you accidentally touched something to hot (got burned) What was the reaction? You jumped back fast (reacted), decided to move away from the heat. Why? Because you knew, not believed that if you got away from the heat everything would be alright. HELLO equally are simple/certain applications for health and wellness. Certainly you need to have a blue print to avoid hazards. One customized for you and your desires/vision (so you will be happy|healthy|strong).

If you want to believe in yourself you need a taste of success.

It is always nice to share your successes with a friend(s). It is equally necessary finding success with the guidance of a teacher. This way you know, absolutely you are working on the best possible goals for your long term success/practice. Motivation lives in belief of yourself and hopefulness for determined taregts. The problem is if you have no clue where to start how can you believe in yourself and potential abilities.

Change<Motivation<Target<Guidance

In the beginning people are just plain scared. Scared they might find out they are not as strong; mentally, physically and spiritually as they hoped (so you avoided the truth). The truth is there is a right way (for you), and sometimes you need a slap on the wrist to keep you going straight. Naturally this will elicit a fear response. Well…”man up”. Fear is fine as long as you are willing to be courageous. and Courage is confronting this fear, then head-butting it into the ground. If you make the right decision, you will not second guess it. You may actually be better for it in the end?

The key to being a good teacher is language/discourse and the ability to witness/react to teachable moments.

The next “must have” is the common sense to adopt, adjust, and hone/develop the curriculum. Being an efficient teacher means applying years of experience as you mold your delivery.

Bill Gates is correct, adding cameras into the classrooms for teachers to share, develop curriculum and techniques brings together the very best of education.

The EXPERIENCE, be it solo or collective is NEEDED in order to UNDERSTAND why cutting pieces, adding parts, and emphasizing segments is most important for the students’ success.

A simple practical analogous idea applied to your physicality is…

Teaching someone the mechanics, positions, and body-awareness of a body squat is completely different than coaching someone to a loaded 1 RM. Everything the student learned on day 1 is internalized (capacity for: neural recruitment/kinesthetic awareness). Then they mold their action in relation to the increased intensity, complexity, and focus demanded of the old and now new movement. The experience then has morphed in-sync with the students’ abilities.

-

As a teacher we gather tips, cues, exercises, drills, techniques, and progressions from our own practice and while sharing with others. A competent teacher always adds, removes, and invents the sharpest tools while molding novices into mastered students.

For my own teachings and personal physical endeavors the focus has shifted to one of pre-hab, flexibility, and practical strength. THESE ARE NOT NEW PRACITES. BUT… how I incorporate i.e. the amount of time/emphasis of each has shifted.

Mind you, to go so far down the rabbit hole would be ill-advised. There are attributes to pull from endurance, hypertrophy, power, speed, and other modalities/protocols. Though to spend too much time in any one and neglect from the main three (flexibility, balance, strength) would be ignorant at best.

Always be mindful to reassess and ask:

Is what I am practicing truly the most effective and direct path to my target?

Remember:
There are no magical set reps (only ranges) a coach can push you to. It is not the teacher’s job to motivate you to “do another rep”. It is his job to keep you focused and on task. To delegate your efforts to each piece of a/the training session. Only you the mover/practitioner can know your true struggle. Are you stopping at 10x, releasing tension at 30 seconds, etc. because so n so said so? Do not be a puppet. I hope for your sake you are becoming smarter, taking more ownership of your practice. Yes a teacher can teach you something new about your body, or show you new doors in your mind. But, in the end if you truly want to excel you have to take control. I tell everyone I work with. “You are in control”. Act that way!

A coach lays out a transparent (visual /cognitive) map onto the trainee. By navigating the points of the subject the coach gives feedback/direction through the paths with least congestion (traffic).

If you can, picture a manikin. On this manikin are lines drawn out for; nerves, veins, connective-tissue, & muscles. These lines, these puzzle-pieces are the roads mapped out and will guide the trainee to the next destination.

In order to reach the set point without any accidents or missed turns… The coach prepares the trainee with a full briefing of the map laid out (what the guide knows to be the next closest destination). The coach has now become the navigator, and curator. If energy is being locked away in dead-ends, or two forces are colliding into one-another, it is s/he with the headset from the tower’s job to realign the traffic flow.

“Get all the pieces moving in the right direction so it becomes easy to manage the big picture.”

Rural Life

American Culture in the UK

OK, my last blog post self destructed.

However, I researched into these three topics. Rural Life because I feel that I am a true country hillbilly, American culture in the UK because I dived into this topic in Autumn last year and also into the Ageing Population. We were asked to research three topics to come to a conclusion as to which one we will look into further, producing a digital presentation uncovering our results. Although I am a rural native, I don’t feel overly passionate about this at all: I don’t like living in to countryside. As a young person it is hard to travel (expensive and public transport is next to worthless). Although I can appreciate it is a perfect retreat for pensioners and also a safe place for families to raise their families, it is not something I want to spend my time researching into further.

I did some personal research into American Culture in the UK: I spoke to an American on the phone and someone who spent a few years in California. From this, I found it interesting how they felt that although America has influenced our eating habits with food chains and unlimited refills, our general way of living is much different. For example, the education system in America is a lot more shaped for sports so that scholarships are available to students. However, in the UK, there is a lot of emphasis on academic league tables in GCSE and A-Level results over sports achievements. They said that whole communities would get behind their sports teams whereas from personal experience a handful of parents would turn up to a Sports day with over 600 students.

However, I feel that the Ageing Population is a current issue that is being uncovered all the time. Public attitudes are shifting towards the elderly: they put stress on the NHS, the economy and the environment. Yet, what I am interested in is the hidden truths from society: how degenerative diseases are on the rise as people are living longer and the effects this has on families. I have a personal experience of this so it is something that is important to me and would like to research further. Although there is a lot of research in ways to prevent such diseases it does make one consider just how old do we have to live to before our quality of life is so poor? This also leads onto the argument over euthanasia: hospices and care homes are essentially ‘God’s waiting rooms’ with some patients not being able to have any self control- is this right? A couple of years ago I watched the film ‘A Short Stay in Switzerland’ and would like to review this again over the controversy over euthanasia. The media is time and again talking about the ageing population and how that by 2020, men’s retirement age is going to increase to 66, giving an extra year of paying taxes. There is also troubles during winter periods with heating bills and how elderly people find it more difficult to get around in order to get their groceries. This is something that is fed to us all the time. It is what we don’t see that I find most interesting and want to depict.

In my research I am going to certainly revisit ‘A Short Stay in Switzerland’ and review some personal stories on websites such as the Alzheimer’s charity web page. I would like to get more of an insight into how we as individuals react to how degenerative diseases are linked with an ageing population. I would like to interview some care workers too to get their impartial view too.

Once you reach one you can get out of the way.

The idea _Maintaining a new state of being, and no longer concerning yourself with the previous “self” and anxieties towards future evolution/growth.

Get out of the way!

Eventually you reach enough of your “goals” that life becomes maintenance/polishing. This is a good thing even though there is a bit of sorrow associated with the idea (nothing new to look forward to).

It is absolutely positive to be in a place where you posses skills and have achieved the mental and physical capacities which previously had been strived for. There is certainly a point that one passes from sound abilities to overuse/ hyper-training. We should never look to the pinnacle of performance for our own health and well being (pertaining to exercise). Professional athletes are not “healthy”; they are over trained, overfed, and adrenally fatigued. By no means should we be amble in our quest and research for physical and mental prowess, but there is a set point which one need not pass over. Set a goal, be it in the distance or close within reach (realistic>sissy talk).

If you do the crime you do the time. If you are so far overweight and metabolically deranged, if you cannot touch your toes or lift your arms overhead… You may feel like you will be chasing goals for years to come. Sorry, that is just the way it has to be for the time being. But remember there is no need for such drastic type casting/segmentation (blood type, metabolic typing, etc.) smoke and mirror methods. WE are all human, we all express similar genes, and we all must start from the same framework.

“Certain strokes for certain folks” is fine and dandy, but the degrees of separation are more minuet than you may have been told.

Remember: There are always things you cannot do. PERIOD.

With progression, intelligence and hard work you master new skills. Yet somethings will be forever out of reach. (not my opinion, this is fact)

The problem with events, shows, groups, etc.

You MUST be are aware of your body. The limits it has. The amount of stimulus needed to achieve set outcome. The time needed to adapt/change. Etc.

When you sign up for an event you become motivated. This motivation develops stricter discipline. This discipline distributes constant stimuli causing a desired change in the set-point (normalcy). The big failure is when you take on a goal you are not ready for. That can be do to peer pressure. Bad information. A bad teacher/guide. Etc. The key when setting a goal is consulting in someone who actually has mastered it (the goal). This person can gauge the amount of time/work/effort needed to succeed. Do not set yourself up to fail because of ignorance. That would be stupid.

These words actually have meaning:
MN Strength & Conditioning has a holistic | ancestral approach for health & wellness, based in science and mastery. We enable you to develop a practice and help you research your body and mind.

Simplifying complex movements into simple verbal/mental cues…
This is appropriate for novices in describing basis of movement and reasoning behind it. This enables the practitioner to explore current capacity. When the intensity is raised, all of the simple/basic cues become increasingly precise/segmented and the thought processes encompasses the entire kinetic chain.

YOU MUST BE IN CONTROL OF YOUR BODY. But you need to understand how to control it.

You also must be able to literally move through specific R.O.M. The point is, don’t be fooled by simplified language in your earlier days of exploration. Most importantly, get out of the way (too much discussion) of the actual work (movement).

In order to have a discussion you must have an opinion. Your opinion of your body must be developed and formed out of research and practice. Then you have the right to enter the discourse of best practices.

Sorry folks, Training is not about how muscles feel. It is about how the body (skeleton) moves through space. Moving optimally trumps any b.s. “muscle pump”.

*Want to be injury free?< move gracefully.
*Want to be strong?< move efficiently (max performance).
*Want to have endurance?< move through patterns of least resistance.
Again, concern yourself with how your muscles feel and you lose the importance of how your body moves (positioning).

The difference is…

Moving through greatest ranges of motion (closed chain) is a skill, and using a machine to fatigue the muscle is not. Learn first how to manipulate the body’s postural position. Then, learn how to activate muscle tension prior to specific movements. Learn to balance; gravity, force, and dynamic loads. Do all this and you will never concern yourself with the “burn” instead you will do all of the work necessary (skill/pattern development, R.O.M, hypertrophy, specialized performance) to be a better practitioner of movement.

MOVING BETTER MEANS LIVING BETTER.

In my experience… If I see someone drowning I jump in to save them.

Typically when you resuscitate them, and they breathe life again, they are a bit discouraged. Then it becomes a motivational force that keeps them going straight (toward a target).

So for me, I am all about the motivational/awareness teaching points. This impacts people in meaningful/long-lasting ways. The motivation has to be derived from what makes them tick (mindfulness). This is what “it” is all about. Enabling people to discover what “it” is that drives them. The discovery is like training a muscle or movement. People who have found success are better practiced at this skill. Similarly, it is like any exercises; with more experience you can break plateaus and discover more about the practice.

Also I know that the brain is like a muscle, in the generic sense. It must have oxygen, blood, and nutrients (etc.) to survive. If you want your brain (mind) to be strengthened you have to push through muscle fatigue. Of course there is a hormetic cost/benefit with this. But most typically when it comes to mental capacities, people will quit before they have reached failure. This is the point where guidance comes in. Everyone will need some mentorship or teaching moment. This is true because any good teacher simply enables you to take a piece of their knowledge and make it your own. Knowledge which will nudge you to the next level of mastery.

Ironic that the ‘hardest’ part of my job is the least important. Physical training does next to nothing for the bigger picture. Smoke and mirrors to get people to eat best and be happy. Obviously if your shoulder hurts or you are over weight the previously stated is not happening…

Have you ever been a slave to a feeling, emotion, place, time, routine, person?

How did you get out?

Do you let it naturally run its course?

Were you the force that re-directed it?

I can still remember how it tastes. The urge came over me time and time again. A few months past and I can still look back to the moment. To the place where I found myself in a uncontrolled, reoccurring pattern. Stepping away from that train of thought I realize, I have had similar habits which inevitably like all have run their course long ago. The only difference between each, is the frequency/occurrence in which they resurface. All are equally as vivid and moving. The ones that happened long ago come to me rarely. The memories more recent become conscience frequently.

I can close my eyes, image and still feel the way I did. But when I open my eyes I am no longer there. That moment has past. I am left to decide whether those memories were good/bad, or if in fact they have never ended. If only now, I am standing in a different place and time? The reality is, I am still the person from the past. In truth there is no past or present only passing moments of this time, this place in space where sub-consciousness and self-consciousness come together.

My point is…. It is good to close your eyes and allow yourself to remember how it was then. But when you open your eyes realize you are still that person. If you remove all that you carry from your “pockets” and continue on in life THIS way, you will see all moments through eyes that have seen a lifetime of happenings. Let if all flash before your senses. Embrace the overwhelming memories of your self and flow with the emotions that pass through you.

If all you want to do is close your eyes so you can remember. Then be mindful first of your breath. Inhale with awareness – exhale releasing the need to recollect. Inhale being aware of your body – exhale minding your emotions leave you. Allowing your mind to slip into the past will not bring you joy. Feeling free and in the moment is the real peace and calmness we all are striving towards. There is no need to dwell in the past or predict the future.

Break the notion that history is the greatest predictor of the future. The history is just that, gone. It was never really a-part of you. The future is not here and nothing you can do will change the time or outcome once you get there. Check your mind consistently, do not allow it to drift into self doubt, or uneasiness. Mind your breath, mind the rise and fall of your chest and belly. Stay present, and deal with a single task at hand which you have power over.

You must believe that your mind can change your being. When this key concept is practiced, you will unlock any door imaginable. The true understanding does not lie reflecting on the past, or trying to foresee the future. The understanding comes from being aware of the present. You have to open your eyes, listen with your ears, and allow your heart to love and share with another. Then you will have all the understanding you request. It is at the specific moment in time. You will be guided in these moments to a deeper understanding of yourself.

When you are aware, and shaken to your core, you evolve. But the real magic of growth can not be reflected upon later. You can never truly recreate this magic. Do not try to recall “it” in your mind. Do not allow yourself to stay in a train of thought, one which is in the past.

Hey I known that it! Great, good for you. I genuinely mean it!

BUT…

What is the ultimate truth?

Is it not the correlation between habits and vitality?

Because guess what, knowing more scientific terms, and understanding minute complexities, does not affect your day to day habits. That takes habitual implementation of SIMPLE BASIC CONCEPTS. That has nothing to do with knowledge and everything to do with experience (wisdom).

Yes there is more to learn. And yes a better understanding of the mechanics can help you convince yourself and others that what you are doing is best. But honestly, just do the work. The work it takes to be; Stress free, mindful to go to bed and wake up happy, move and ignite the hormetic affects of an eclectic bag of stimuli, to LIVE and live well.

Human beings are complex mechanisms. Responding systems may vary. Still trying to rely on logic and cognition before awareness of habit and adaptation?

Do not make it your consummate duty to worry. To always “think” you “need” more knowledge, to constantly envision the future and hold on to the past.

Instead, Experiment. Research. and Practice deeper within yourself and all those complex nuanced terms and functions will not matter in the day to day.

Do not get carried away with the next best thing or the convincing evidence needed to jump in and try implementing basic practices. If you cannot meet the standards you cannot advance to the master understanding.

-

This will be the beginning of a series of articles which will be released over this coming year. I (

This will be the beginning of a series of articles which will be released over this coming year. I (Dan) will be addressing the topics which I cover in my health talk. I have decided to put these concepts and framework for which all of my students subscribe too here, in writing. This has been long overdue and a challenge for myself. I do not wish to be perceived as “smart” or “distant” some say crazy. I am no different than anyone. I do however have an obsession like many of my colleagues around the world for traveling deeper within myself and sharing whatever I may find.

My aim is to synthesis complex mechanics, functions of our epigenetics, endocrine system, muscular structures, neurological adaptations, and facilitate a safe space for mental capacities and physical abilities to expand. To disavow any false causation which bad scientists have pushed into channels of popular culture.

Personally, articles that rest in the pages of medical journals are fascinating, but for the sake of keeping this series of articles short and digestible, for the layman (your mother, and mother’s mother) we are going to bypass many of the foundational studies and avoid the vernacular of the core science brethren. Instead I am going to address a few practical, actionable, applications, for all ages and level of geekdomness.

Come to Bed Honey #2

Sorry gentlemen, but your significant other is right. When you are up late in the other room watching tv, you are tipping the scales in favor of, poorer quality of life.

O really sir? See, there is a innate mechanism within each of us, and our bodies function accordingly.

In one sentence, before I dive into this thing; Wake with the sun and rest with the moon. Simple isn’t it? Well that is just the way it is. The simple things are always the most difficult to apply.

Setting the stage:

Close your eyes (very difficult to keep reading isn’t it). Image you are sitting before a fire a few thousand years ago (Paleolithic). Before industry, before petroleum, and before blogs, urls, and cable television. Or if that (evolution) turns you off, remember the last time you went camping? So you are out there roughin it, just you the sun and the moon. You wake up as the sun shines (vitamin D) on your face, you eat a little food, likely something calorie dense, maybe go for a walk, gather some fire wood for later, go for a swim, sit and talk with your friends, enjoy some un-intrusive peace and quiet. As the day turns into night and you and your friends huddle around the fire, drinking tea, telling stories, watching the last bits of fire burn out, before you go to sleep only a few hours after sundown. This is the environment and rhythm of life in which we thrive.

The hormonal rhythm: Nature’s oscillation and animals’ dance to keep in line

Replaying the camping trip with a scientific looking glass. When we wake up in the morning our bodies sense; the hunger, the fasted blood sugar, the effects of starvation creeping in (auotaphagy). Our bodies do not like to drift away from satiety (homeostasis). Every mechanism has evolved to anticipate “feast or famine”. So brilliantly and very effectively, cortisol lights the match under our *** and we work to satiate our needs (achieve homeostasis). Cortisol released into our system is like a caged lion let loose at the zoo. People start to run. Drawing back to the last article, The King: Stress running from enraged lions is stressful. To much stress will burn you out. Yes, cortisol is essential, it gives off that magic powder that helps us get stuff done. But if the “programming” in your mind, and the external stimuli are too great for your body’s capacities, cortisol will shut you down. Like everything I will be uncovering; stress, sleep, inflammation, nutrition, training, rest, etc. the hormetic effects of cortisol are very tricky.

Practical Actionable Aplication
How to break the pattern?

If you have excess body fat, unable to break plateaus, feel down (poor mood), first look at your sleep patterns.

Dark Room– The moon and stars are far away. Your shining lcd-led-plasma-amoled- whatever type of gadgetry, is very close to you. Turn the gadgets off and turn them off early. The light signals your brain the same as the sun (daytime/activity) and does not let melatonin (rest/recovery) do its job. Your room must be pitch black when it is time to go to sleep (6-8+hrs).

Vitamin D – Get your vitamin D levels tested (above 60 nanograms per deciliter). Nearly every cell in the human body has a receptor for vitamin D. Also, vitamin D is responsible for transport and absorption of calcium in the body. 30 minutes in the afternoon sun will get you 20,000 international units. Record how many hours of sunlight you are getting per day and correlate this with your mood/skin/sleep, etc… Generally more is better. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD)

Cirdian cycle (morning cortisol/night melatonin) Hormones are centeral in giving you energy, signaling for what state the subsequent systems will function. Your metabolism (leptin/insulin) function practically depending on just how rested your body is.

In the end either our hormones control us or we take charge (transform) and decide to force a diversion from a deleterious pattern.

I have started this discourse with, Stress and the importance of Hormesis & Mindfulness, so we are all on the same page progressing forward. As this conversation develops it is necessary to understand this basic framework. There is no benefit in discussing the merits of a high bar or low bar back squat, the best progression in achieving a planche or one arm hand stand, or how to avoid western degenerative diseases, if first an understanding of stress management has not been applied to your life. The stuff my students strive for is simple as an idea, but extremely hard work in practice. So in order to believe in something you have to start at square one, awareness.

What is to come?
