Kristin Baker’s new solo show – SPLITTING TWILIGHT – at Deitch Projects in New Yor

Kristin Baker’s new solo show – SPLITTING TWILIGHT – at Deitch Projects in New York City is too sexy for words.

SPLITTING TWILIGHT is in Deitch’s massive warehouse space on Wooster Street in SoHo. A perfect match; I have always loved that space. The blinding whiteness of the gallery totally makes the crisp colors Baker uses pop right out. You almost need sunglasses to see the stuff clearly.

Stylistically, Baker’s work mixes the excitement of abstract expressionism with the bubble-gum sheen of pop art. With pop art, you always know what you’re looking at; with ab-ex most of the time you’re like “umm… I, like, don’t know what’s happening right now…”

Even if you don’t totally get Baker, you’ll still admire her use of color and the virtuosity of the paintings. Each time I saw a new piece, I thought more and more about how her work is kind of like DJing – bits and pieces that are constantly mixed and remixed. I’d call Kristin Baker the “Girl Talk” of the art world.

If you don’t know Baker, her method includes painting in acrylic on huuuge panels of PVC. She paints on tape and then rips that shit off. Fun! A lot of her work focuses on disaster scenes – her dad is an amateur race car driver – hence the feeling you’re looking through broken shards of glass when you see her works.

One of my favorite moments in the show was New Dawn Fades, 2009, a work that bursts at the seams with colors: yellows, deep reds, pinks, oranges. The stunning part of the work, for me, were the gaps that aren’t painted at all. They expose the “canvas” as a plain old piece of acrylic; you can see that the work is hung onto the wall and juts out a foot. Majorly brillz.

Her capstone piece, Bash, Bish, Rubicon, 2009, which reminds me of that painting of Niagara Falls by Frederic Church, is…10 x 20 feet!

Super human cancer survivor and bike riding extrordinaire, Lance Armstrong, and his foundation, LIVESTRONG, have teamed up with Nike and over twenty world renowned artists to present STAGES. STAGES is a world wide art exhibition, set up to raise money and awareness for the ongoing pandemic struggle against cancer. Each of the pieces on exhibition is for sale after the show to raise money for Lance’s foundation. And these aren’t your run of the mill art student screen printings. These works are all by the SUPERstars of today’s art world. Americans, European, Asians, Brazilians, they’re all here! A few standouts are Shepard Fairey, creator of the iconic Obama image, Chinese gunpowder artist Cai Guo-Qiang, and a personal favorite of mine, graffitti artist turned fine artist, Jose Parla. The show is traveling, giving lots of people a chance to go see it. From Halloween, this Friday, until November 21 STAGES will be at DEITCH Projects Gallery in New York, open to the public. I would LOVE to go see this, but likely won’t get a chance to because of school. Why couldn’t it just be in NYC over Christmas break to give me a chance to witness!?!? Anywho, watch the video above to learn some more and see some of the artists and their work, and click the Cai Guo-Qiang piece below to link to the STAGES website.

I was so busy this weekend hanging out at The NY Art Book Fair that I didn’t get a chance to blog. But here is my attempt at a re-cap of the first two days…

This year there were about 200 vendors spread out in the labyrinth of classrooms at PS1. The Fair opened early on Thursday evening for a preview. I was overwhelmed with the amount of publications to look at, but really excited about returning over the weekend to take a better look. The benefit party, at Deitch Projects in Long Island City, following the preview was fun. I attended with artists Jenn Brehm, Brent Owens, and Jennifer Sullivan. I had never visited Deitch L.I.C. before and the gallery space, which is in a warehouse right next to The East River, is huge. When we entered we all received an editioned Tom Sachs screwdriver with our tickets. We hung out, listened to DJs Tim Lokiec and Gary Murphy, ate some empanadas and had some drinks. I.U.D. didn’t play until 11, so I stayed for a bit of their set and then headed home for a good nights sleep before the weekend of events.

On Friday morning I attended The Contemporary Artists’ Books Conference session: ‘Empirical Experience: The Artist, Information, and the Book.’ The panel was moderated by Bernard Yenelouis who began the session with a history of data gathering and it’s relationship to artists books. In his lecture he mentioned Minimata, Michael Lesy’s Wisconsin Death Trip, Ed Ruscha’s Royal Road Test, Martha Rosler’s The Bowery in Two Inadequate Descriptive Systems, The Center for Land Use Interpretation’s Points of Interest in Ohio, and Harun Farocki’s still video images, as examples of artists books and projects that use information to get to a new kind of knowledge.

After Yenelouis’s introduction, William E. Jones spoke about his project Mansfield 1962. Mansfield 1962 started off as a film project. Jones had pieced together footage from the Mansfield, Ohio police department where they secretly documented a tea-room in the center of town. The police filmed 8 hours a day and Jones created his own film from the 16mm footage that he shows and following the screening explains the history of the situation. When Jones was asked to be a part of The Whitney Biennial he realized he would not be able to be present for each daily screening, so he decided the project should be made into a book. The second printing of the book Tearoom is available through 2nd Cannons Publications.

Jacqueline Hassink then spoke about her books The Table of Power and Car Girls. The Table of Power is Hassink’s series where she documents the conference room tables of international corporations. Car Girls is a series of photographs taken at car shows, of the women or girls who work there.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

After The Conference session I went for a look around The Fair. The first magazine I stumbled upon was Graphic, a quarterly graphic design magazine from Seoul, Korea. Graphic explores one theme in each issue and is written in both Korean and English. Issue no.6 is themed ‘Magazines’ and it contains information about 39 Korean magazines and 61 other international magazines! I can’t wait to check that one out. I was really excited to see Korea represented at The Fair and look forward to seeing more issues.

Pyramid Power, from Vancouver, Canada was another art magazine that was new to me and I bought myself a copy of their most recent issue no.6, 2009. Pyramid Power is an art, design, and literature magazine that is published three times a year and is full of lush images. The issue I picked up has articles with Jonathan Meese, Mark DeLong & Jason McLean, and Dick Oulton, a commercial photographer from Vancouver whose amazing photographs can be seen below.

I then went over to Motto’s table and spoke with Alexis Zavialoff the head of Motto Distribution. He showed me a new magazine from France called May, which I later photographed at the Ooga Booga table. Alexis also gave me a copy of The Index to their One Day Self-Publishing Fair, which is a great resource full of magazines, zines, and books, etc. I have never heard of before.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

It was a really busy day at The Fair. I also attended two events in The Classroom. First, Michalis Pichler presented his book Un Coup de Des Jamais N’Abolira Le Hasard / A Throw of the Dice Will Never Abolish Chance. The book is a copy of Stéphane Mallarmé’s book of the same name, however Pichler has cut out all of the words. In doing so, he creates a visual poem devoid of text. After Pichler gave a short description of his project we watched a video of the book being played on a player piano, the blank spaces struck the notes and created a song from the text. It was really interesting to see the book change from text to visual shape to music.

One of the most exciting events I was able to attend in The Classroom was my rediscovery of animator Daniel Barrow. I had seen an animation of his at The Kitchen a couple of years ago as part of an Astria Superak program. On Friday he presented his live animation The Face of Everything, a story loosely based on Liberace’s lovers. The animation was absolutely mesmerizing as Barrow narrated and moved images on transparencies over a projector.

Reports on the events of Saturday and Sunday coming soon…

Kehinde Wiley creates big, bold paintings of young black men that are a throwback to 18th century classical portraiture. His sitters strike regal poses against vibrant, ornate patterns, wearing colorful T-shirts, caps and baggy jeans. It’s like Baroque gone day-glo. Opening today at the Deitch Projects gallery in New York is a new exhibit of Wiley’s portraits called “Black Light.”

The exhibit presents an interesting twist on Wiley’s work — the figures are photographs; only the backgrounds are painted. Wiley’s other portraits are originally based on photos, so it’s interesting to see one layer peeled away from his process. The end result is equally striking.

Last summer, Kurt visited Wiley in his Brooklyn studio. He was working on a series of paintings of African men from Dakar and Lagos.

Kehinde told Kurt how, as a kid, he was inspired by the British portraiture at the Huntington Library in California, and at the same moment realized, “there weren’t people who happened to look like me. By and large I was the black kid there.” You can listen to the interview here:

Dash Snow, an East Village Graffiti Artist and Photographer, known for his controversial works depicting raw street life recently passed away on July 13th 2009.

The Brazilian twins Os Gemeos have just wrapped up a new mural down on Houston Street at the corner of the Bowery. It has made possible through Deitch Projects, and replaced the Keith Haring tribute that was formally on the wall. The wall looks great, check out the photos below.

WHAT: SILENT AUCTION TO BENEFIT TARA SUBKOFF – COCKTAILS – RACHEL CHANDLER AND PAUL SEVI

WHAT: SILENT AUCTION TO BENEFIT TARA SUBKOFF – COCKTAILS – RACHEL CHANDLER AND PAUL SEVIGNY TO DJ

WHERE: DEITCH PROJECTS (GRAND ST)

WHEN: 5-10PM WEDNESDAY JULY 15TH

WHY: We are very sorry to say that our great friend Tara Subkoff has been diagnosed with a form of brain tumor known as an acoustic neuroma. While benign, it will be fatal to her in approximately two years if not operated on. Recuperation from the necessary operation may take as long as a year. During this time it will not be possible for her to work. We are writing in the hope that all of you can help. The operation should take place in August if Tara is to avoid deterioration in her mobility and hearing, possible facial palsy and other symptoms. The tumor has exceeded three centimeters, which places extreme urgency on removal and rules out radiation and less invasive methods of treatment. There are eleven specialists involved, due to the extremely delicate area around the tumor. All proceeds from the benefit would go towards covering the remainder of the costs of the operation, and possibly to the care that will be needed afterwards. Jeffery Deitch has kindly offered his Grand Street space for a benefit on July 15th. We want to put together a really terrific array of artworks for a silent auction. Tara is donating her collection of 200 pieces of Imitation of Christ couture, also to be in the auction. We realize that this is very short notice and that you are all inundated with benefit requests. If you can possibly help by donating a small work, we would be incredibly grateful. If you are not able to donate a work at this time, monetary donations are also most welcome. Checks can be made payable to: NYFA (New York Foundation for the Arts)
