Why did I buy it?

I got this just after it came out because of all the positive press. I had never had a multi-fx unit before so this was my first dabble. I bought the floor board at the same time so that I could use it live.

How does it sound?

The shear breadth of sounds is impressive, and it does a lot pretty well. The preset sounds and downloadable ones are passable, however I only really used sounds I had programmed myself. As each bank has four channels I found it worked well for live use to assign a different amp to each bank and then program in four different variations for each amp with channel A always being my solo sound, B my crunch, C a crunch with some type of modulation and D clean. The amps I liked best were the “modern high gain”, “brit class A”, “Line 6 drive” and “tweed blues”. I didn’t really use the mode where the footswitch acted like stomp boxes allowing additional reverb/EQ/delay etc. to be turned on or off. One thing I found valuable was have a multitude of modulation effects to experiment with that I had never had access to before. The wah is disappointing and the tuner bloody useless!

The POD2 sounded great going directly into a recording set-up however I had lots of problems trying to get it to sound good at stage volumes. One of the big problems I have with multi-fx units is that there are so many settings that you only really have time to adjust them at low volumes (ie in your bedroom) which means the killer sound you dial in never quite sounds so killer when you take it to your gig and use it at higher volumes (it’s a psycho-acoustics thing). I originally used the POD going into my Laney clean channel, then tried it through the effects loop, then tried it through the Laney + my Marshall 4×10 speaker cab and then direct into the PA (turning on or off the speaker emulation as required). I wasn’t happy with the live sound produced by any of these combinations.

Keep of sell?

I sold this to a mate who although not a guitarist was doing lots of home recording and wanted options for guitar sounds. He actually went on to buy a Line6 variaxe to go with this and has been relatively happy with the recording sounds until recently (when he asked to borrow my Mesa V-twin!). I think if I did lots of recording I would have kept this, however the benefit of having lots of sounds in one small box never quite overcame the dissatisfaction I had when using it live.

Why did I buy it?

On looking for that “nut” factor for my overdriven crunch sound I found out that a short delay makes the sound bigger. As I only wanted a one trick pony I opted for this small delay pedal instead of the bigger multi-delay pedals. I also already had a boss tuner so could power this from the tuner without needing an extra power supply.

How does it sound?

I set the delay time to around 100msec’s, enough that you can hear it clearly on a quickly damped clean note but not enough that you distinctly hear the repeat on a more overdriven sound. This has the effect of making heavily overdriven chords and solos sound much bigger but without being able to specifically notice that a delay is on. I use this effect along with reverb for all overdriven tones.

Keep or sell?

It’s a keep, but only as part of a bigger pedal board. When it comes to throwing a couple pedals in a bag to go for a jam this seldom comes because I use it more to enhance my sound rather than make it.

Leaving the Pride of Kent. Met a child called Tit. Lost count of sleep attempts. And dignity.

Arrival. Two hours late to London. One hour late leaving from Paris. Better than the Eurostar attempt.

Tears welled up in my eyes. What? The 26th? But that is a week far. And it means I will miss Christmas, all because of a couple of snowflakes.

Thirty minutes before I was about to fly back home, the spiteful, annoying, mean voice on the loudspeaker announced that all flights to Europe from London’s three main airports were cancelled. Thirty minutes!!

I had checked-in, passed through security check and was impatiently staring up at the screen waiting for the gate number to pop-up next to my flight. And to top it all, the next available seats to Malta were on the 26th!

I had spent a whole afternoon sitting down on the floor, playing with two small girls who had been at the airport since 3:00 in the morning. They were headed to Tenerife with their mum. Their mum was lost. She could speak, but not read English. The look in her eyes screamed of frustration.

Twelve whole hours and her flight had not yet appeared on the screen in the waiting room. She was anxious to get to her destination, but no one around her could help.

Seven hours earlier I had set foot in the airport, and the scene that welcomed me was one of despair. The floor was covered with a carpet of sleeping people. Every corner of the airport had children wailing, screaming their hearts out, wanting to sleep, go home, or play with other kids. Every bench was taken. Every electrical plug was being used. Every toilet stall was occupied.

The number of people in the airport had accumulated as flights got delayed or cancelled. Long queues at front desks stretched around corners and across halls. The cafes must have made a fortune. A booming voice was asking people to go back home and re-book their flights. But what about those who had no home in London?

I pinned my eyes to the screen, hoping that my flight does not turn red or green (cancelled or delayed), and as time went by I was sure that I was getting back home. Relatives and friends wished me a good journey via text messages. I had already planned the weekend. I knew what to do and who to visit.

That is, until the clock struck 15:30.

To add insult to injury, we were asked to queue for more than three hours, simply to be given a phone number scribbled on a piece of paper. ‘Call this number tomorrow, and explain what happened. Sorry, we cannot do anything, no refunds, no re-bookings. Do it on-line.’

Back home my mum was frantically calling airlines and browsing online looking for an alternative flight. People around me on their way to Malta were firing flight prices to each other, discussing the best alternative. Prices for flights taking-off the next day from the only airport which was not closed-down were rising quickly.

An old British lady infront of me suddenly hugged me, excitedly telling me she had got a flight to the islands for 170 pounds. Five minutes later I got a call from home. I was flying the next day for 270 pounds.

In 5 minutes the price had gone up by 100 pounds, but sweet relief swept through me. A flight cancellation had cost me 300 pounds more, but I did not have to wait till Boxing day to get back home after all

So, you’ve finally decided to jump into the world of digital audio. You downloaded a program

So, you’ve finally decided to jump into the world of digital audio. You downloaded a program or two, maybe even bought yourself a MIDI controller, and you’d like to get started. You’ve figured out how to load and record a virtual instrument. Things are looking good.

But . . .

There’s a horrible lag between when you press a key on your midi controller and when the note sounds. You notice the same lag when you press play, stop, or any of the other transport controls. But worst of all, you can only load a couple of plugins before your computer starts to stutter. You thought you had a fast machine, but your modest project has sent the CPU meter through the roof. Between this stutter and the lag, there’s very little room for creativity.

Desperate for help, you’ve posted in some of the forums for your software of choice, only to be told that you need to buy an expensive USB or Firewire interface or that you should dump your PC for a Mac. Do you really need to take such drastic measures?

No. Absolutely not.

Your problem is how Windows uses the sound card in your computer. Currently the ‘Microsoft Sound Mapper’ or the ‘Direct Sound Mapper’ or ‘KMixer’ is in charge of how audio gets in and out of your computer. Sadly, they all use up far more resources than necessary. What you need is an ASIO (Audio Stream Input/Output) driver.

Windows puts a lot of software between your DAW (digital audio workstation) and the soundcard or audio device it needs to use. Every layer of software your audio signal travels through adds to the latency of that signal. All the ASIO protocol does is connect your DAW directly to your soundcard or device, thereby removing several layers of latency.

So, where DirectSound fails, ASIO drivers excel. Where can you get one?

Right here.

Download the latest stable version and install it. Next time you start your audio application, dig into the options->audio menu (how to do this will be different for every program, consult your manual) and select ASIO4ALL. You’ll probably notice an immediate performance boost and better latency. If not, read the manual and make some custom latency/soundcard selections. You’ll still have a limit to how much audio processing your computer can do, but ASIO4ALL will let you maximize your capabilities.

ASIO4ALL isn’t magic, its just a generic ASIO driver designed to access most audio hardware. Any ASIO driver would be superior to Windows’ native sound management tools. Some soundcards, external devices, and software come with their own ASIO driver, so its possible you’ve already got one available. Try it out to see if you can improve your results. If it does not work out, give ASIO4ALL a try.

It is believed that once a buffalo has gone into water it is impossible to take it out. Something similar is happening to the Scorpene sub deal with France.

scorpene submarine

The deal for six submarines which was signed in 2005, was worth nearly four billion dollars. This included deep ToT in many areas of Submarine technology. However, even after 5 years the entire project is stuck in quagmire of bureaucratic bungling, thanks to India’s Ministry of Defence (MoD). In an apparent bid to show (falsely) that a lot of indigenous technology was being used, MoD twisted the deal terms to make it look like materials and technology was being procured from Indian firms. In reality, everything was being procured from the French firm Armaris, but was not recorded in the documents. At the time of deal signing the cost these items was estimated at $580 million. After 5 years Armaris is asking more than a $1 billion for the same items.

Now the esteemed defence minister Mr. Antony and his sidekick, Minister of State for Defence, Mr. Pallam Raju are running from pillar to post to make the French to reduce the price. The French till date have given him a nothing, not even an assurance.

It is estimated that the program is now delayed till 2015 or more. It is quiet obvious to even a layman that these submarines will no longer be the state of art subs that India signed up for by the time they are inducted. These will be just old heap of junk with massively inflated price tags.

“Gai bhains paani mein” is the most apt description here. The only moot point is that these buffaloes cost more than a billion dollar a piece.

Today’s post is going to be about my displeasure with the Malaysian low-cost carrier. I know A

Today’s post is going to be about my displeasure with the Malaysian low-cost carrier. I know AirAsia is meant to be “low-cost” but being low-class is unforgivable. Their flight delays are as common as seeing Tony Fernandes’ face in the Malaysian dailies.

I’ve personally experienced Air Asia delays on three separate occasions… one while flying back to KL from Tawau after a business trip. The other two which were much more frustrating… flying back from the beautiful island of Bali. Not once but twice! The first time it put a damper on my otherwise amazing honeymoon… the other after my company trip. We had to wait close to 5 hours after our flight was delayed. To make things worse, when we got on the plane it was close to dinner time and they had run out of food.

Tony… you should empower your staff to think… low-cost doesn’t equal stupidity! If 3 flights had been delayed and rolled into the last flight out of Bali, you should anticipate tired, hungry and annoyed passengers. We’re not expecting free food, we have money! Just stock up on meals! Or have your ground staff make arrangements for us to purchase some food before boarding. No extra cost to your airline! Just some extra effort, extra initiative and some extra gray cells in the skulls of your staff!

Another incident happened recently. My brother-in-law’s flight from Melbourne was delayed 4 HOURS!!! To add to that the passengers were stuck on-board the plane and not allowed to alight!!! Imagine that, 4 hours stuck on a plane sitting on the tarmac. Again only those who had pre-ordered the meals were served their meals… that too only upon the insistence of the more vociferous passengers.

Come on… low-cost doesn’t equal LOW SERVICE QUALITY! Look at Southwest Airlines. Granted, I don’t know the intricacies of running a low-cost airline, but common sense and some initiative should been used and shown by your staff.

The final incident… the one as THEY say, “that broke the camel’s back” happened last Friday. My wife was to fly AirAsia to Kolkatta and then catch a connecting flight to Bhubaneswar. However, due to an unexplained delay of more than 1 hour here in KL, she missed the connecting flight. Tony, I know you have a policy that reads, “we’re a point-to-point carrier and are not responsible for connecting flights…blablabla” but you don’t know what panic this caused my wife all alone in a strange city in India. It also caused panic to me here in Malaysia. To make matters worse, there were no AirAsia ground crew in Kolkatta available to assist her.

Frantic calls to India were made for the next couple of hours. We knew no one in Kolkatta and my wife had to spend the night there before catching the next available flight which happened to be at 9.00am the next day. Fortunately through some contacts we managed to find her a safe place to spend the night. Please understand, I’m not dramatizing this. If it were me who were stuck there, I’d check myself into the nearest hotel while waiting for tomorrow to come. Put yourself in my wife’s shoes… a petite lady of 5ft, all alone in a strange city (a city that’s known to be not too safe), stranded in the airport. Totally UNACCEPTABLE!

Well this has made us decide to stop flying AirAsia! Tony, I know your airlines will still have millions of passengers coz Malaysians are always looking for a bargain, BUT the time will come when they’ll have other options and yours will be the least desirable one!

“Now everyone can fly.” That’s true… but they may fly HUNGRY, they may fly AFTER 4 HOURS, or they may NOT FLY to the final destination!

AirAsia, Tony… improve or suffer the fate that many companies which relied solely on cost leadership as their competitive advantage… a slow death!

Cheers for Now!

According to some advertisements on TV spending Christmas with your family is priceless. Well, that

According to some advertisements on TV spending Christmas with your family is priceless. Well, that may be so, but the price you have to pay for flying around this time of year certainly comes with a cost. It’s just not one that is measured in money.

I got to the airport all right. I arrived early because I did not want to take the risk of the trains being messed up due to the snow. I had checked the website of the airport in the morning and though behind my flight it just said “scheduled” there did seem to be an hour delay in general on a number of flights.

After I had lunch at the airport I went to see if I could find out where to check in. That’s when I find out my flight had a 2 hour delay. I thought to myself, as long as I’ll get there I’ll be happy so lets try to kill some more time.

Killing time at the airport consists of a limited number of things:

There’s reading, which I had already done during lunch.

There’s eating and drinking, the former of which I had already done and the latter of which I did not feel in the mood for after Tuesday’s Office Christmas Party.

There’s shopping, which I decided to do. I ogled shoes at Clarks without any intention of buying. Next I went into a little book, CD and DVD store. The selection of DVD’s was a ranged from crappy b-films to a few “cherry picked” a-films and a whole bunch of Mae West films which I nearly ended up buying.

And then there’s playing with your laptop. I was about to put in a disc of Roswell (I’m re-watching everything in a phase of teenage nostalgia), when my flight had disappeared from the check-in board. In a panic I got my stuff together and walked to another one where I discovered I was finally allowed to check-in.

This meant I was due to stand in my first line out of an estimate of four or five for this journey. Luckily I chose the line with the best entertainment: there were two scales where people could weigh their suitcases to see if they’re within the limit, at a mere cost of 50p per suitcase (No change given, you can weigh two for a pound but you have to place the second one on within 10 seconds!). The winner was 30.2kg, that’s definitely not within the limit I think.

After I had conquered my first queue I got to go straight into the next one in order to proceed to the lounge. Yet another 30 minutes of shuffling along. This time the entertainment came in the form of a guy who was very much in a hurry. First he tried to just blatantly walk passed everyone but apparently someone had sent him back because he came and stood right behind me. When the queue turned round a corner he thought he had sneakily got in front of me. In reality I had noticed how much in a hurry he was jumping from one foot to the other and sighing heavily, and I had let him pass me. One more guy in front of me would not make my plane leave sooner anyway.

In the next 20 minutes I got to watch him sneak his way in front of 5 more people only to pass everyone in the end anyway because he was in such a hurry. He did all this however without saying one word. Not once did he say “excuse me” or anything else to explain why he was passing people by. And he wasn’t the only one who did this. There was another guy who did the exact same thing without saying one word. I should try this next time I don’t feel like queuing.

Finally I had made it into the lounge. I browsed some more shops though most of them were horribly overprized or just full of expensive items. I’m not sure how this works. The shops you find at airport lounges are always a mix of some normal shops that sell things everyone needs like toiletries, books, magazines food and snacks etc. And then the rest of the shops are all with designer clothes or shoes and expensive jewelry and perfumes. Now I might be mistaken but I think the majority of travelers at the airport aren’t really loaded with money. Unless the idea is that you fly with a low cost airline and spend the rest of your money buying luxurious items at the airport.

After I had eaten something more as a number of hours had passed since lunch, I found out my flight had yet another 55 minutes delay. And after playing with my laptop it became yet another 55 minutes. My one hour flight now had nearly four hours delay.

Finally we got called to go to the gate, where of course there was another wait for us in store, but luckily this airport has lots of chairs near the gate. After finding out I was not going to get my money back, because my airline thinks the whole four hours delay was due to mother nature, I sat myself down. Unlike the majority of the other people who thought that standing in a herd near the gate was going to make the wait shorter and easier. I only stood up once we were already boarding and there was a handful of people left waiting to board.

We did leave in the end. And I made it to my destination. Sorry for the long post. If you have made it all the way to the end chances are you sort of feel like I did when I finally arrived. Thank you for reading.

Imagine the scene: We’re sitting in our office late on a Friday afternoon, thinking a little bit about the weekend ahead. The anticipation of upcoming events has us, well, a little distracted. Unexpectedly, our boss walks into our office and says, “I just heard that you pushed back your delivery of XYZ by 2 weeks. What’s going on?” Jolted back to work reality, the mind begins to race. The pressure is on. Since it’s true we’ve pushed back our delivery, nothing we say will be good news. With little or no preparation, we’ve got to deliver a compelling presentation that will accurately represent the circumstances and justify the decision we’ve made. It’s time to apply pattern #3: Past, Present, Future (PPF).

We’re approaching the end of a series of posts aimed at helping us to be more effective in our day-to-day impromptu speaking opportunities. The premise is that when we are armed with a simple pattern to follow we will be more effective at delivering our messages with little or no advance preparation. By memorizing one or more of these patterns we can concentrate on the message rather than the mechanics.

In this post we’re bringing you Past, Present, Future (PPF). The dirty little secret is that this pattern is a simplification of the impromptu speaking strategy we discussed in a previous post, Tell a Story.

PPF almost needs no additional explanation:

Past = the way it was before

Present = the way it is now

Future = the way we plan for or predict it to be

This simple pattern is easy to remember and easy to apply. Let’s consider what we might say to our boss.

(Past) Our original schedule was developed with the information we had in hand at the time. The team has been working on the project for almost a month now. They have made significant progress. In the course of this work, however, we have learned quite a bit. (Present) For example, we now know that our original assumptions about the API were too simple. Also, the UI requirements have changed. The date changed to reflect the reality of this new work. (Future) Later this week I have a meeting with the QA team to talk about ways that we can increase the overlap between development and test, possibly to the extent of reducing the effect of this schedule slip on GA by as much as 50%.

The PPF pattern can be applied in many situations. It’s short, simple, and shares its name with some jewelry I bought for my wife a couple of Christmases ago.

This time of year, folks look forward to taking time off from their jobs and spending time with fami

This time of year, folks look forward to taking time off from their jobs and spending time with family. Most of your workers, subconsultants, and vendors do, too. Add to that that many owners may be unreachable during the holidays, and it seems that sometimes it is impossible to get anything done during December.

Despite all the festive good cheer, be careful not to let the holiday season turn into a claim for delay on a project. Project holidays are usually set at the beginning of a job. It is a good idea to review your contract and any set calendars agreed to prior to making assumptions about what days will be considered non-work days. Discuss anticipated absences early in the month, and determine back-up plans for when a needed individual (for example, the architect) is not reachable. If the owner will be unavailable, has he delegated decision making authority in his absence? Anticipating potential problems and solutions to them can make the difference between a productive month and weeks of float creep.

If you experience problems due to the vacation of others, be sure to document the delays and timely request an extension of time. Under AIA A201 8.3.1, the contract time shall be extended by change order if the contractor is delayed in the progress of the Work by an act or neglect of the Owner, Architect, or a separate contractor employed by the Owner. Contract adjustments due to the delay are also available. Likewise, Consensus DOCS 200, at 6.3.1, contains a similar provision for compensation for delay damages caused by others.

Under EJCDC documents, however, only an extension of time, and not an equitable cost increase to the contract, is the remedy for a delay experienced by a contractor. EJCDC C-700 12.03.

Regardless of the form of contract on your Project, be sure do document all delays experienced due to the unavailability of others. Make claims for time and/or money adjustments in accordance with your contract for all such delays to avoid finding yourself short on time at the end of the Project.

Oh, and happy holidays!

I woke up this morning to my phone ringing, right as my alarm was going off. A 90 minute delay. Beautiful.

Usually when we get a delayed start or a closing, the call comes before 4:30. Since it was not until 5:00 today and I was already awake, I just stayed up. I had maybe the most productive morning I’ve had in ages. I started by doing 12 minutes of AM Yoga On Demand then I did a few stretches I learned from Polly over at yogaisyummy.net. It felt so good just to stretch and relax. Usually in the morning I’m running around like a crazy person.

After my yoga time, I baked. How many people with jobs get to do that on Monday morning? I made some Pumpkin Muffins. I used the same recipe from last week, but this time I made it healthier with lots of substitutions. They aren’t as good as the original recipe, but still pretty darn good. After the muffins were in the oven, I took a shower. I even got to see Jeremy this morning, which was great. While he scrapped my car out, I made oatmeal and coffee. All while listening to Christmas music on Pandora. The roads weren’t even that bad, and I got to drive to work in the sunshine.

A pic from the last set of muffins.

Now on to the rest of the day. shortened classes WOO!

Author : DJUNAEDI, ANTONIUS
