I’m fairly certain Keith is out of contact right now recovering from an operation, and is
not in a position to respond to these attacks. However, the preliminary information I have
from others familiar with these data is that the attacks are bogus.
It is unclear that this particular series was used in any of our reconstructions (some of
the underlying chronologies may be the same, but I’m fairly certain the versions of these
data we have used are based on a different composite and standardization method), let alone
any of the dozen other reconstructions of Northern Hemisphere mean temperature shown in the
most recent IPCC report, which come to the conclusion that recent warming is anomalous in a
long-term context.
So, even if there were a problem w/ these data, it wouldn’t matter as far as the key
conclusions regarding past warmth are concerned. But I don’t think there is any problem
with these data, rather it appears that McIntyre has greatly distorted the actual
information content of these data. It will take folks a few days to get to the bottom of
this, in Keith’s absence.
if McIntyre had a legitimate point, he would submit a comment to the journal in question.
of course, the last time he tried that (w/ our ‘98 article in Nature), his comment was
rejected. For all of the noise and bluster about the Steig et al Antarctic warming, its now
nearing a year and nothing has been submitted. So more likely he won’t submit for
peer-reviewed scrutiny, or if it does get his criticism “published” it will be in the
discredited contrarian home journal “Energy and Environment”. I’m sure you are aware that
McIntyre and his ilk realize they no longer need to get their crap published in legitimate
journals. All they have to do is put it up on their blog, and the contrarian noise machine
kicks into gear, pretty soon Druge, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and their ilk (in this case,
The Telegraph were already on it this morning) are parroting the claims. And based on what?
some guy w/ no credentials, dubious connections with the energy industry, and who hasn’t
submitted his claims to the scrutiny of peer review.
Fortunately, the prestige press doesn’t fall for this sort of stuff, right?

InsideMovies: Racism or marketing tactic?
Universal is facing a potential PR mess for its decision to digitally remove the names and images of the only black couple in ‘Couples Retreat’ on the film’s UK movie poster.

According to England’s The Daily Mail, a Universal spokesman said the updated ad was released “to simplify the poster to actors who are most recognizable in international markets.”

But some are calling foul on the complete removal of actors Kali Hawk and Faizon Love from the film’s poster. “I think this was an ill-conceived move,” Mediawatch-UK director Vivienne Pattison told the Mail. “We celebrate diversity in Britain and we could have coped with seeing the same poster used in America.”

In the U.S. version, all eight principal stars, including Hawk and Love, are seen standing knee-deep in water with their names displayed above. For the UK version, a different backdrop is shown with only the six (white) actors and actresses on display.

“Any discrepancy between the posters is cause for alarm because it makes racist assumptions about target markets,” says Ann Simonton, founder of the non-profit organization Media Watch. “But this is a somewhat common response to how advertisers target audiences. So much of advertising depends on our ignorance and it’s important for the consumer to remain ignorant. When they eliminate diversity, it maintains this false view of our world. It’s sickening to think about what the industry’s motives are, but it’s important that they be called on it.”

Daily Mail film critic Jason Solomons weighed in over the weekend, noting, “We don’t cater much for the black cinema-going audience in this country, which is a great shame, so it seems strange that when there are black stars in a major feature film, this fact isn’t promoted. And, in terms of business decisions, this seems a pretty counter-productive one.”

For its part, Universal has acknowledged the omission, saying it regretted offending anyone and is abandoning plans to use the revised poster in other countries.
But you have to wonder: If they regretted offending anyone, why would they alter the poster in the first place?

http://forum.infjs.com/forums.php

So I was on the INFJ’s Forum. Found it on Google, but it was a live forum, where a Gang Stalking target was being ridiculed.

The thread started with a poster who wanted to talk about her Gang Stalking. She was mercilessly being teased and called crazy by the other posters.

She was busy trying to convince them that she was not crazy. It was not working and so finally I registered an account. I wanted to see what would happen, in some cases I am able to be of assistance. In others not.

I posted three information filled threads, which were enough to be able to rebuff the assertions that the posters in the thread had been making about her being crazy.

They had been calling her crazy, saying that the government would not stalk her and so forth.

The discussion started to go in favour of the fact that Gang Stalking is real and so they decided to delete the thread and ban my account, using the accusation that I was posting propaganda or something like that?

It’s really funny. I have not had accounts banned in this manner in some time. I keep forgetting however that light still has to shine onto these types of forums. The civil rights movement comes to mind. It might not be attack dogs, and fire hose, but it’s the same type of resistance, to seeing this brought out into the open.

Now if the problem really was that I was posting links, which I did, but they could have simply removed my posts, instead they deleted the whole thread, and banned the account, when clearly I was being a part of the discussion in a peaceful manner. This is what use to happen, and until Targets visit and enlighten these types of forums, it is what will continue to happen.

So in honour of Indigo Ribbon month, here is an example of what we are still against as targets.

Here is some of that discussion. Click on the links to see some of the threads, before they were deleted.

I just checked, they didn’t just ban my account, they banned that girl’s account as well. Now if the dispute was with me, why ban her account? I guess the dispute was really with the subject matter and the fact that you would not be left to pick on her as a group. This is what targets are constantly against. I am sure some in that thread were decent, but some were taunting her and she was trying to get a legit point across, and as long as they could make her look crazy it was all fun and games, but once that was not an option, then it was another story.

This is what targets are up against in real life and online. My deepest and sincerest apologies to the original poster of that thread. I watched them bully you, and sought to help. I never sought to have your account banned, or mine for that matter. Some days it’s one step forward two steps back.

I think that little informants think it’s three years ago when our threads could just silently be deleted and we would just go running for the hills.

It’s a different day, and we have made progress. It’s Indigo Ribbon Month. We have books, websites, and a presence in this place and we as Targeted Individuals will not be silenced. I can only hope the time will come when people frown upon your actions towards us, the way they do upon those who try to stop truth.

I never did figure out what that forum was about, but if it’s so narrow that it can’t handle the truth about Gang Stalking, it’s probably not worth finding out. Here is one more option.

Some of you are just narrow minded, you don’t like the truth, and you like to pick on those who are telling the truth. When confronted in a fair fight, you would rather delete and ban your adversaries than fight fair. You are cowards in the truest sense of the word and are dully representative of the other Informants that some of you likely represent. How is that for another option.

NOTES
An album a year – two if you were lucky and padded the two singles out with fillers. That was the norm for most recording artists in the mid-sixties, wasn’t it?

Between 1966 and 1968, Peggy Seeger averaged at least seven albums a year as a performer for Argo (with and without Ewan MacColl) and a further half dozen a year as music supervisor/director/collaborator on Argo anthologies and stuff like albums by the Critics Group.

What with the singing workshops, the song writing, the research, and the public performances, you wonder where she found the time. And she had two children under the age of ten at the time.

Peggy and her brother Mike probably hadn’t seen a lot of each other in the ten years since they last recorded an album together (American Folk Songs – 1957). Mike had gone straight on to found the New Lost City Ramblers (in 1958) with John Cohen and Tom Paley. Peggy had gone straight over to the other side of the Atlantic, met Ewan MacColl and stayed.

Mind you, putting together this album probably didn’t take that long. Not because it doesn’t sound really good. Quite the opposite. It sounds effortless. Mike Seeger, as Dylan said, had this stuff in his genes. Ditto Peggy, being his sister.

Not much need for re-takes, you imagine.

NOT YOUR USUAL CITY-BILLIES
Not sure it was their genes, though. More that they were raised in a house where, as their father Charles put it, this music resounded morning, noon and night.

“The children had not learned their stuff later in life after first becoming saturated with urban popular and fine arts, as has the usual city-billy,” Seeger senior said, “but rather in their basinettes and pens, years before much of any other kind of music reached their ears.”

“By the time she was three, Peggy, for example, had a very respectable repertory of ballads, game and love songs,” he recalled. “Before they reached their teens, Michael and Peggy were delighting miscellaneous gatherings and meetings with ‘My Father is a Drunkard’, ‘The Roving Gambler’ and ‘Careless Love’ (unexpurgated and unaccompanied) with original descants.”

Here’s Mike Seeger talking about their childhood:

“My father and mother had a mission to keep this kind of music alive because they believed in its inherent musical value and its cultural value. Because it’s been straighjt mouth to ear without commercial intervention. The commercial domination of records and radio have skewed American cultural life.

“They saw that happening and so they brought us kids up with a counter to that and refused to have a radio in the house, for instance. But they did have Fats Domino and Stan Kenton. The mission rubbed off on me and my sister Peggy.”

REDISCOVERED PLEASURE
Mike Seeger died in August, 2009. For an appreciation of his remarkable life from the Smithsonian Folkways website, click here.

After moving back to the States in 1994 Peggy said she was rediscovering the pleasure of singing with Mike and their brother Pete. “I was so long in England that I lost touch with the dynamics and personnel of my birth family,” she says on her website.

The Clutha were formed in 1964 by four colleagues who worked at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow: Eaglesham, Voy, Alexander and Don Martin. By the time they made their first recordings (for the Topic compilation album The Streets of Glasgow in 1965), Martin had left and fiddler Callum Allan had joined.

Gordeanna McCulloch, who also appeared on the Streets of Glasgow album, joined the group not long after, at the age of 19, having also recorded for Topic for another 1965 compilation album, New Voices From Scotland. She’d got involved in traditional song as a schoolgirl at the Rutherglen Academy in Glasgow, where Norman Buchan ran a Ballads Club. As a teenager, she had been invited down to London by Ewan MacColl to join in his Singers Club seminars.

They were only with Argo for this, their first solo album. In 1974, they were back on Topic for The Clutha – Scots Ballads, Songs & Dance Tunes. By the time of their 1977 release, The Bonnie Mill Dams, Eaglesham had left and Jimmy Anderson had joined the group on chamber pipes and bagpipes.

The intertubes are ablaze today with reports of a serious bug in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard that, un

The intertubes are ablaze today with reports of a serious bug in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard that, under certain conditions, can destroy all of a user’s personal data.

The problem lies with Mac OS X’s Guest Account functionality, and was first reported at the beginning of September on Apple’s (s aapl) Support Discussions forum. Specifically, some Mac owners have found that after using the Guest account, and later logging-in to their usual primary account, all their personal data has been wiped clean. Everything. Documents, pictures, movies, music. The whole lot.

More worryingly, some users report that they didn’t even use their Guest account first — simply booting up their Mac normally resulted in an “out of the box” experience — default wallpaper, dock configuration and, again, a loss of all personal data.

It seems just about every technology or Apple-focused website is reporting the issue this morning. At a time when Microsoft (s msft) is suffering the humiliation of having permanently lost customer’s data, Apple is in similar hot water. It’s not a competition, boys!

From what the user community has managed to figure out, the bug occurs only in Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) with a Guest Account that was created in Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). After upgrading to Snow Leopard, the Guest Account settings retain Leopard’s older spots, to coin a phrase. And there the problem lies.

Thankfully, and in a break from its usual behavior (that is, stubborn refusal to admit anything is wrong with their products) Apple yesterday delivered a statement to CNET that reads, “We are aware of the issue which occurs only in extremely rare cases and we are working on a fix.” OK, a few plus-points for finally admitting there’s a problem. Minus a few points for it taking over a month to do so. (Seriously, do we really think it took Apple this long to reproduce the problem? No. Of course not.) And minus a few hundred more for Apple not putting that crucial statement on its own support pages, which I would modestly suggest is vastly more professional and helpful to Mac owners who aren’t CNET or tech-press readers. But oh well — at least we got something.

Thankfully there are some steps everyone can take to minimize the risks of falling foul to this hugely worrying bug.

First off, have a recent and complete Time Machine backup of your personal account and all your data (but think twice if you’re using a Time Capsule that’s a little more than 17 months old).

Next, if the Guest Account was enabled before you upgraded to Snow Leopard, pop in to your System Preferences and disable it. To do so, follow the steps below.

In System Preferences, choose Accounts

Click the padlock icon to make changes - you may be prompted for your password

The icon will now indicate you can make changes

Click on the Guest Account icon

Un-check the box labeled "Allow guests to log in to this computer"

That’s it. Close System Preferences and restart your computer. When you next log in, you can choose whether or not you want to re-enable the Guest Account. Doing so after following these steps ought to be safe, since the Guest Account will be recreated with all-new Snow Leopard settings which, it’s assumed, won’t delete all your valuable personal data. But please note carefully — this is a community-generated ‘fix’ and not officially recommended or endorsed by Apple. It might work. It might not. Your mileage, as they say, may vary.

Anecdotal Evidence Alert: I had my Guest account disabled on all my machines prior to upgrading to SL. In an heroic act of self sacrifice I’ve courageously enabled the Guest account on all of my Macs, then logged back in to my usual personal account. I haven’t lost a thing. Hardly a scientific test of the theory this problem occurs only with 10.5/Leopard flavoured Guest accounts, but encouraging, nonetheless.

Have you been hit by this bug? Can you offer a more technically sound workaround? Please share in the comments below.

Notes

Carmen Prietto
Born in San Diego, California, of Mexican mother and Peruvian father (who was also a singer), Prietto had, by the time of this recording, lived most of her life in Los Angeles.

In 1947 she made her opera debut as Gilda in Rigoletto with the Pacific Opera Company. Two years later she went to Mexico where she started recital work, sang opera on the radio and travelled.

In 1954 she sang the role of Blonde in Mozart’s ‘Entfuhrung aus dem Serail’ opera at the Aix-en-Provence music festival, a recording of which is still available.

She made her London debut at the Victoria and Albert Museum, subsequently appearing at the Royal Festival Hall with the Boyd Neel String Orchestra. She was so well received that she was asked to return in March of 1955 to sing Benjamin Britten’s Les Illuminations, says this record’s blurb.

Prietto had another go at recording Mexican songs (Canciones Mexicanas y Españolas) on the Swiss Beaux Prix label, this time with pianist Franz Zubal accompanying. But it’s even harder to find than this record.

Bert Weedon
By the time he participated on this record Bert Weedon was 36 and had served his apprenticeship with the orchestras of Cyril Stapleton, Ted Heath, The Squadronaires and Max Jaffa. He was still three years away from chart success under his own name with Guitar Boogie Shuffle – and two years from putting together the most important guitar playing manual EVER – Play in a Day.

Find out about Bert here.

Argo and Westminster
I’ve been trying to find out about Argo’s relationship with the US Westminster label, but haven’t got very far. They released this album and at least two others of the Argo folk output in the early fifties (Edric Connor’s Calypso and Jean Ritchie’s Songs from Kentucky), but I can’t find any further Argo releases by them after Decca took Argo over in 1957.

Argo and Westminster had pretty similar profiles: adventurous and well-recorded classical and some folk. It was Westminster, for example, who released in the late ‘fifties the 11-volume set of LPs of Alan Lomax’s field trip to Spain of 1952-53. (Rounder had promised to reissue the albums in toto on CD as part of their Lomax Spanish Recordings series, but now they’ve apparently given up on the idea).

Westminster got eaten up by ABC-Paramount and issued no more recordings after 1965. The back catalogue is now owned by Deutsche Grammophon.

A touch of velvet
Needless to say, I haven’t heard this record. Here’s what the Graophone magazine made of it when it came out:

“Carmen Prietto, accompanied by Bert Weedon on the guitar is quite fascinating in Songs from Mexico…Most of them are languorous love songs, but monotony is avoided by the interpolation of a few in livelier vein.

“I have never heard Miss Prietto in the flesh, though she has sung in England. She has a soprano voice with a touch of velvet in its quality and is evidently a versatile artist, having sung in operas by Bellini, Mozart and Verdi among others, and also in Benjamin Britten’s ‘Les Illuminations’.”
