So it’s been a while I know, but things are now rolling again and this month the heartbreak anthology will be completed, at least this volume. This is the mix for women’s sadness, which is a brutal and powerful thing to experience for most involved parties. To be clear, I’m not talking about a scorned woman. That was the purpose of PFU #002. I’m talking about the times when a woman feels truly and honestly sad, desperate , and afraid that she is not or will not be loved. When she has no ideas of how to fix things, no plans for solutions or alternatives, just a dangerous vacuum. This has it’s own special and heavy gravity. With all attempts to have female sadness romanticized, marginalized, and mocked I feel that its true impact never changes. I think it’s possible to appear unfazed or actually be temporarily indifferent to a devastated woman, but that doesn’t last. Only true sociopaths are immune.

When woman are strong or weak there seems to have be a comfortable cliche to soften, dismiss, or reverse the situation, but when women are truly destroyed, the world seems out of balance, something is wrong. Men don’t, and probably never will, have this power. I like that. Be it chauvinism, guilt, misguided pity, the reality of maternal nature, world history, personal hang-ups, or just me being a pussy…I don’t care. I like the fact that this gender imbalance (or at least my view of it) falls into the woman’s court.

I realize that the idea of making mixes for women that are supposed to sync up with their heaviest emotions is ridiculous, but this is my offering. I tried to feature songs that had a few various root causes of women’s sadness (relating specifically to heartbreak) that I have run across, from the understandable to the illogical and maddening. In an attempt to keep the relevance of this blog I am having two guest mixes for female sadness and anger that will be done by actual females coming later this month. Seeing the contrast alone should be fun or at least educational. Here we go ladies: A soundtrack to one of the things that (most)men are afraid of.

Delizia’s Pizza Kitchen is a chain, but you wouldn’t necessarily know it. It’s a pretty standard pizza place, sandwiched between a wine shop and an out-of-business Dollar Store.

The decor is actually quite nice. Fo-brick siding, booths, tables, and an inner dining area make intelligent use of the limited space. The outer tables along the booth area look and feel cramped, especially on a busy night.

That’s another thing: the busy nights are really busy. I’m actually a little surprised, because it’s not an out-of-the-ordinary pizza place. As I said, the decor is a little more “classy,” but it’s still average enough to show up in sandals, should the mood strike you. The booths are a coveted location on these nights (or any time during the day, for that matter). The inner dining area is right by the bathroom, so if you don’t mind bathroom traffic, it’s also a decent alternative to sitting in the main area. The other drawback, however, is if you’re seated next to a noisy table, the sound is amplified in that small area.

The food is actually really nice. The regular pizza isn’t quite as good as a neighboring shop we’ll cover eventually, but they also specialize in many different styles of pizza, ranging from honey mustard chicken to buffalo chicken, veggie, etc. If you’re looking for a wide variety of slices, this is a great spot for those. Their calzones are also really nice. A bit on the smallish side, but the taste is actually really competitive, in my experience. Pastas are a big deal over there, and their portions are borderline obscene in how large a bowl you get. Soups and salads are also a nice alternative, as their Minestrone and Tortellini soups beat al others.

The wait-staff is pleasant and amiable, though they get bogged down quite easily. If you’re in the mood to eat and run, you’re better off ordering to-go, rather than sit and eat quickly. It’s pretty hit or miss most of the time, but when they hit they knock it out of the park. They have some really nice people working there.

Other little notes include their advertising campaign. They created a Myspace account, and they offer Wi-Fi service. The downside to both of these is the fact that Myspace sucks, and their Wi-Fi isn’t always the most reliable. Furthermore, while the whole world is going Wi-Fi, I wonder how useful it is in your pizzeria. Still, they’re trying to find their niche and I think that’s admirable.

All-in-all, if you’re interested in dining out for something filling that doesn’t cost a zillion dollars, Delizia’s is a nice spot to check out. Does it give Roma’s a run for its money? Not in the least. This is largely in part due to the fact that Romas and Delizia’s are two different animals. Believe it or not, despite being two pizza places in the same small town, there is room enough for both of them, as they each cater to a different type of Italian interest.

For Delizia’s, I give them four flags out of five. The sitting arrangements could be better, though I’m not sure how they could remedy it without moving to a bigger location.

If you name a place Delizia Cafe, the food had better deliver. Unfortunately, what they call food at Delizia is anything but delicious.

Victor and I had been stuck inside our Venice Beach pad most of Sunday and wanted to get outside for a nice walk and to grab a quick bite. I have bladed past Delizia many times since it opened last year and have always wanted to try it. Something about its modern outdoor decor, bright orange sign and simple Italian menu made it looked enticing. But clearly the boardwalk location is the only thing keeping this place hopping.

Delizia has sunset specials every night that include beer, drinks like sangria and what they call “tapas.” Perhaps the use of the Spanish word “tapas” instead of the Italian “cicchetti” for small plates — not to mention the Spanish Sangria — should have tipped us off that this would be nothing like the Italian food we spent our honeymoon grazing on every day. The only authentically European thing about Delizia was the vast number of smokers. (Their palates must be burned out.)

We ordered the pizzette, cannellini crostini and four pieces of dark meat roasted chicken with greens and garlic. The four tiny squares of pizzette on thick bread ($5) barely resembled any pizza I had ever seen. It looked and tasted like it had been sitting around all day. The cheese was burnt. The toppings were dried out. One of the pieces tasted like cardboard. We complained to the waitress, and she said, “I’m sorry, should I bring some olive oil and vinegar to spice it up?” OK, but no amount of oil and vinegar was going to make this pizza edible. The Amy’s Organic and Trader Joe’s frozen pizzas at home are far superior, and that’s kind of scary.

The crostini topped with a mixture of white beans, onions and parsley ($5) was bland but edible. It also tasted like it had been mixed hours before and refrigerated. Clearly they don’t make the tapas fresh at Delizia. I splashed some vinegar on that just to kick it up a notch, too.

Next she brought out chicken, along with a supposedly “clean” plate that had bits of food still stuck to the surface. Vic’s plate was also dirty. At this point, I was a little afraid to eat the chicken. It was slightly pink in the middle, and I had visions of salmonella running through my brain. Victor was equally unimpressed by our meal.

Despite our trepidation, we asked for fresh plates and did eat the chicken ($10). It was moist and mildly spiced, accompanied by broccoli and greens that were drowning in lemon juice and chunks of garlic. It’s been an hour, and I haven’t gotten sick so far, but that’s probably the ony compliment I can generate. The roasted chicken at Ralph’s is much better.

If you’re on the Venice boardwalk and need to eat, head to Figtree’s Cafe or grab a sausage at Jody Maroni’s. I’m sad to say Delizia was the worst $23 we have spent on a meal in months. –Jenny.
