O Mini 3 virá com tela de 3,5″ touchscreen, câmera de 3 megapixels, plataforma Android, conectividade Quadriband GSM/EDGE, slot para cartões microSD de até 32GB, portas miniUSB, GPS, Bluetooth, e pesando 105 gramas, o smartphone chega ao mercado chinês até o fim deste mês e será vendido pela China Mobile, e deve chegar ao mercado brasileiro até o natal sendo vendido pela Claro, por isso já vai preparando  a sua cartinha ao Papai Noel,  afinal este é um bom presente natalino.

Few years back one of the main factors that stopped me from installing Linux on laptop was the Wi-fi support. Many prospective Linux users might have apprehension about installing Linux because of this legacy. One thing that you have to keep in mind when you start using Linux is that tomorrow will be years ahead of today in open source world. So buy the time you actually start using wi-fi, somebody somewhere might have developed the necessary driver usually by ingenious reverse engineering.

Dell, with some help from Broadcom and Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, has released a Linux friendly Broadcom Wi-Fi driver for both 32 and 64-bit Linuxes. For Dell users, this means that they now have Wi-Fi support for the Dell 1490, 1395, 1397, 1505, and 1510 Wireless cards.
So Dell Studio series and Inspiron Series will work.The drivers should work with any Broadcom card using one of the supported chipsets on any modern Linux

Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE: HPQ) had already given its guidance for today’s earnings two weeks ago when it announced the surprise acquisition of 3Com Corp. (NASDAQ: COMS).  But that doesn’t keep traders from looking through the numbers.  H-P posted $1.14 EPS on $30.78 billion in revenues. Thomson Reuters had estimates of $1.13 EPS and $30.36 billion in revenues.

The company said it still backs $1.03 to $1.05 non-GAAP EPS and $29.6 billion to $29.9 billion in revenues for the current quarter that it will report in 3 months. Estimates for next quarter are $1.04 EPS and $29.7 billion in revenues.  H-P is also backing $4.25  to $4.35 in 2010 non-GAAP EPS.

The company generated $3.4 billion in cash flow from operations and exited with $13.4 billion in gross cash.

Shares closed up almost 2% at $51.02 today and the 52-week trading range is $25.39 to $51.43.  Shares are down at $50.77 in the after-hours session.  When you compare the company’s take to that of Dell Inc. (NASDAQ: DELL), it is easy to see who is executing better today.

Last week I finished reading Twitterville by Shel Israel. Prior to picking it up, I’d heard a lot of positive about the book. So needless to say when Shel came to speak at Third Tuesday in Toronto I felt compelled to buy it.

The good

I found Twitterville gave great, real world examples of how Twitter is working in the business world from big companies to small non-profits. These companies are using the site to engage with stakeholders by gaining trust and developing conversations, not just feeding corporate speak. One of those large companies is Dell.

The book explains how Ricardo Guerrero, an online marketer at Dell, discovered Twitter at SXSW in early 2007. By June of that year, after figuring his way around the site, Ricardo created Dell Outlet. Since then, Dell’s presence on the site has soared and according to the book, earlier this year, Dell announced it had made $3 million in sales, thanks in large part to its activity on Twitter.

The bad

In terms of the book’s organization, “Part 3” along with the “Afterward” could have easily been put at the front. For me this works better because even though the book is great for all audiences, many readers are learning about Twitter and why they should join; having it at the front lets them get comfortable with how the site works. And as someone who knows how the site works, I found having it at the end took something away from the book. There wasn’t that feeling of conclusion because I spent the last while skipping through pages that were irrelevant to me.

The ugly

I can get over the organization of the book to some extent, but failing to fact check is something different altogether. It took a lot away from the book seeing the editors not catch that David Miller is the Mayor of Toronto. Instead I saw in his place,  Sandy Kemsley, a Torontonian yes, but definitely not the mayor. After Googling a bit, I saw she wrote a blog post on the situation; others had noted the gaff and told her about it.

She brings up a great point by saying, “I didn’t buy the book: if it lists me as the mayor of Toronto, who knows what other nonsense it contains?”

That simple mistake could mean the difference from recommending the book to all who will listen, to panning it because people would have doubts if other stuff were truly facts.

Conclusion

In the end, this book is not without it’s flaws (some bigger than others). It is, however, a great handbook on examples of Twitter’s use in business. My recommendation is to pick it up, however if you do, do it soon; the book is completely relevant, but as with anything involving social media, it can quickly become not so.

No começo do mês, a Dell anunciou seu retorno ao mercado de dispositivos de mão com o smartphone Mini 3, que inicialmente será vendido na China e no Brasil. Na ocasião, não foram liberados muitos detalhes a respeito do aparelho, a não ser que ele rodaria o Android.

Agora o site The Register afirma que o aparelho contará com uma tela de 3.5 polegadas multitouch (a ausência de botões do aparelho já nos dava essa dica) com resolução de 640 por 360 pixels, câmera de 3 megapixel com flash, autofoco e capacidade de fazer vídeos, GPS e entrada para cartões SD de até 32 GB.

Quanto à conectividade, a versão chinesa do modelo será quad band e terá conexão GSM/GPRS/Edge, sem qualquer menção à 3G ou WiFi, que (espera-se) estejam no modelo tupiniquim.

Essas dúvidas não deverão durar muito tempo, já que o Mini3 deverá chegar ao mercado no próximo mês.

O smartphone Mini 3i, da Dell, começa a ser vendido no mercado chinês até o final de novembro pela operadora China Mobile. O aparelho tem previsão de lançamento no Brasil em dezembro e, até então, suas especificações técnicas não haviam sido divulgadas.

Segundo a Dell, o Mini 3i faz parte das plataformas Ophone e Mobile Market e virá com aplicativos pré-carregados para e-mail (139Mail), chat (Fetion) e “mapas digitais para navegação”, além de ser compatível com outros aplicativos criados para o sistema operacional Android.

O Mini 3i será vendido nas cores “Red Passion” e “Oiled Bronze”. Tem uma tela de 3,5 polegadas widescreen sensível ao toque (resolução de 640 x 360 pontos), GPS, Bluetooth, câmera de 3 megapixels com zoom, auto-foco, flash e captura de vídeos, conectividade GSM/EDGE (quadribanda), entrada para cartões microSD de até 32 GB e usa um conector miniUSB. O Mini 3i mede 58,3 x 122 x 11,7 mm e pesa 105 gramas.

A China Mobile é a maior operadora do mundo, com mais de 500 milhões de assinantes. A empresa estima que já existem 180 milhões de assinantes de banda larga móvel no país. Além da China, o Mini 3i será lançado também no Brasil até o Natal pela Claro.

I just came across the following engagement report from wetpaint and Altimeter and thought the findings were very interesting and relevant. While many companies know they need to be doing something with social media, most aren’t as they usually tend to ask: what’s the benefit?

This report, answers that question and it’s an answer that companies are going to like to hear. Basically, the more you engage with social media the higher your profits and sales can be. Two examples – Starbucks and Dell who interact daily across multiple channels with an audience and have seen stable if not increases profits.

Para muitos o título desse artigo pode parecer sensacionalista, mas diante de algumas informações publicadas dias atrás, no caderno de negócios do El País, um dos jornais mais influentes do globo, o drama tem seu motivo. Segundo a matéria, dentro de alguns meses será difícil encontrar algum netbook à venda nas lojas.

O motivo da afirmação é que quando os mesmos foram introduzidos no mercado, seu principal alvo era os mercados emergentes, ou em desenvolvimento. Por possuírem um baixo custo de produção, seu valor final também manteve-se baixo, e consequentemente as margens de lucros também são reduzidas.

O problema é que um produto desenhado exclusivamente para um público de baixo pode aquisitivo, se tornou fenômeno nos países do norte, e apenas em 2008 foram comercializados 12 milhões de unidades, sendo que esse número vem crescendo. Segundo a consultoria IDC, nesse ano as vendas já passam de 26 milhões de unidades, e olha que ainda nem chegou o Natal, umas das épocas que mais vende eletrônicos.

Diante da margem minúscula de lucro, muitas fabricantes já encontraram outro caminho para voltar a aumentar o faturamento, com linhas chamadas de miniportáteis, ultrafinos, e por aí vai, portando recursos adicionais, como tela maior, entre outras coisas.

No entanto, segundo o jornal, a salvação dos aparelhinhos pode ser as operadoras de telefonia. Por exemplo, na Espanha as operadoras Vodafone, Orange e Telefónica já oferecem um netbook com planos de conectividade 3G associado. No caso da Vodafone, é oferecido um modelo Dell de graça em troca de uma tarifa mensal de 50 euros, pela utilização da rede de dados. No Brasil muitas operadoras já subsidiam aparelhos em troca de clientes que aderem a planos mensais consideráveis, e quero acreditar que esses mesmos países que possibilitaram o nascimento do netbook, também possam salva-lo.

Hola a todos, los últimos días el blog ha estado un poco desatendido pero ha sido por exceso de trabajo, ya ando en los últimos días del semestre y ya saben como es eso (exámenes, trabajos finales, recuperarse en diversas materias, cooptar, comprar o corromper profesores jajaja bueno esa última no), pero bueno el caso es que por fin me compré mi netbook, la que elegí fue la Dell Mini 10, (por cierto me costó $4,629 en Wallmart, por si a alguien le interesa) hasta el momento no tengo ningún problema, al instalarle el Ubuntu Netbook Remix no me dio ningún problema y de hecho me sorprendió que casi casi recién salido de la caja, me reconoció casi todo, por el momento la estoy configurando y una vez que me acostumbre podré hacer unos pequeños tutoriales sobre como instalar el Remix ya que para algunas personas este proceso puede ser algo complicado.

Espero poder volver pronto a la normalidad.

I have been literally babying my Dell laptop for months now as one thing after another either falls off or goes wrong.  Let’s recap this fun journey, shall we? …

Not counting the massive amounts of Vista-related crashing…the first traumatic injury was when the quotations key fell off, only to be re-attached by some computer geek guys, but it fell off again and refused to be re-attached.  I taped it to my whiteboard in my home office and gave it a small tribute:

Not to be outdone by the quotations key, both the backspace key and the K key decided they no longer wished to function correctly.  Now those two keys must be pounded on with the finger pressure equivalent to an elephant being dropped 30 feet to the ground in order to get them to work properly.  The fingers on my right hand associated with those two keys are getting pressure calluses.

Feeling left out and one-upped by the backspace key and the K key, the E, R, N, and M keys all decided to peel off their coverings so that if one were not a touch typist, one would be in deep doo-doo while writing a blog post.  I’m not making this up:

Then the amazingly constructed power cord decided to stop functioning correctly.  It would, at the worst time, simply pop out of its home on the side of the laptop, leaving me on battery.  Then it escalated its mischief and stopped working while it was fully plugged in and much like the old tv rabbit ears antennas, I would have to hold the power cord up and over my head with my left hand while trying to type with my right hand so the battery wouldn’t keep discharging.  Not only was the power cord acting wonky, it was not charging the battery when it was fully plugged in – so I was screwed regardless.  Power on – battery still slowly dying.  After much agony and an aching left shoulder, I ordered a replacement power cord.  It now works, for how long is anyone’s guess.

Being the highly educated, innovative, creative problem solver in the family…I got out my handy dandy Sharpie and re-drew the letters E, R, N, and M and then painted some craft varnish over them to keep the Sharpie from accidentally smearing.  I’m so clever:

And so for now we have a barely functioning laptop once again.  I can update any or all 3 of my blogs, I can Twitter to my heart’s content, and maybe…just maybe I can get to read and comment on some of my bloggy friends’ postings this week.

Nothing else could possibly happen to this laptop could it?…

L’ho scoperto da poco, lo ammetto… forse perchè non ho molto tempo per surfare in rete. Ma mi ha colpita subito. Lockerz. Un sito che invitando gente, rispondendo a domande (una domanda al giorno)  e facendo il log-in giornaliero ti fa accumulare punti buoni per poi convertirli in bellissimi premi tecnologici e modaioli.
