Dick and Gretchen of the Juke Joint 5 have both played at Red’s in Clarksdale, Mississippi–in fact, Dick is part of the house band there whenever he is in town and is good friends with owner, Red Paden. What a great experience to be able to play in one of the last surviving juke joints in this country. If you’ve ever wanted to go to a juke joint, here are some of the places you can still visit. View full article here.

I may be jumping the gun a little as public voting results aren’t released until next Monday, May 27, but after the Judges saves tonight and the current iTunes chart, I am down to the following four artists. The good news is I still have an artist left from each team. YAY!

The day that I’ve been waiting for! After three hours of sleep (hey, I was too excited!), a quick visit to the grandparents and several cups of coffee, I made it to the moment that I have been anticipating.

11:45 a.m.

I’m here sitting in the airport on the day that I have been waiting for for the past three months. I thought it would never come! I’m filled with emotions. When I said goodbye to my momma and sister, I felt sad. When the baggage claim employee knew that I was a new traveler and treated me like one, I felt nervous. When I walked down those cool walking but moving thing, I felt like a boss. And yet the emotion that precedes all of these is excitement. I just feel overcome with thankfulness for this wonderful opportunity and also pride that I was strong enough to resist the fear and go through with it. I’m sure that the next 80 days will also be a little bit of an emotional rollercoaster ride but I am as prepared as I can be and totally pumped for the chance to grow in this way. I just hope that I am able to use every moment to the fullest.

———

Update: 1:45 p.m. (the original departure time)

1:45 p.m. announcement: 30 minute delay

2:15 p.m. announcement: 45 minute delay

3:00 announcement: 1 hour delay. “Our new departure time is 4:15 p.m.”

That equals 2 hours and 15 minutes of delay! Which means that we will arrive in Atlanta at 5:45 p.m. Oh yeah, the problem is that my connection flight to Quito leaves at 5:30 p.m. OOPS! Well, I guess this is part of the adventure. We will see if the Quito flight will be delayed or if I will need to sleep in the airport. Hey, that could be fun right?

PS) Is it frowned upon to take pictures with your “seat mates” (aka strangers) on a plane? Oh well! I’m never gonna see these people again.. lol! Also, my dad dared me.

——-

Update: 12:00 a.m.

Well, goodness gracious forreals, folks. My day has been extremely long and this trip has taken a little detour. Let me give you a synopsis.

6:15 p.m. – Arrive in Atlanta to board connection flight to Quito. Learn that this flight has already left. POOP.

6:20 p.m. – Work up the patience to stand in the looonggg seemingly nonmoving customer service help line. Make friends with two people next to me which passes the time.

7:20 p.m. – Finally make it to the front where the man was way less sympathetic about my situation (probably because thousands of other people in the airport have the same issue) I was given a coupon for a hotel and no food vouchers. Maybe this was more frustrating because the man next to me received two rooms and vouchers for all of his 6 children. -_- (can ya give a sista one?) Oh yeah, the next available flight to Quito is in two days.

7:30 p.m. – Call dad near tears. **My first almost-break-down moment of the trip and it was only like 6 hours in!**

7:40 p.m. – Given some encouragement to call and figure something out. Call customer service asking for a flight back to Detroit from Atlanta.

8:40 p.m. – To make a very long story short (1 hour and 10 min on hold with Delta customer service WOW), I decide to make it official and ask my Aunt Dorilee for some help. She is totally down and awesome! She offers to pick me up and host me for two days at her home (she lives in Georgia) until my new flight on Tuesday. YAY! Such a beautiful thing.

10:15 p.m. – After some baggage issues, Aunt Dorilee picks me up and we are laughing and enjoying each other’s company.

12:30 a.m. – I’m writing this post and just reflecting on the amazing beauty that was shown through this ugly situation (that turned out to not even be that ugly in the first place.) Life is good.

Thankful for my first challenge and that I made it out okay and even stronger than before. Also, now I get two days with some family that I don’t get to see often. I did ask for an adventure! I am sure getting just that. Learned about patience, flexibility and felt super loved by some family.

Also, Delta gave me a new toothbrush. Just what I need Hahah

Yahoo!

Right now I’m on my first Delta flight to Detroit, then it’s on the Paris and into Geneva—gotta love in-flight Wi-Fi…we’re just flying over an amazing view of the Grand Canyon.

Flying over the Grand Canyon!

After a marathon packing session full of lots of trying on clothes, a trip to the mall for what I was sure I “needed” and much out-then-back-in attempted editing, I’m on my way with an overweight suitcase. (You’d think after all the traveling I do I would be better at this—but hey, a girl needs her options!)

My must-haves: I’ve got a new Nikon Coolpix camera (courtesy of Costco, where I always know I’ll get a good deal in a hurry) with some pretty great tech specs but convenient size, plus extra memory card and a good old fashioned journal for notes. I’ve also got my work BlackBerry (with international service), iPad, Kindle and laptop (for work). Tried to pack the right mix of layers to wear, always a couple cute scarfs, and an array of comfy flat shoes (plus, I ALWAYS take Band-Aid’s friction stick—it’s amazing for avoiding blisters, find it with foot care in any pharmacy).

Let the adventure begin!

There used to be a time when airlines operated on their own. You would buy a ticket on KLM and you

There used to be a time when airlines operated on their own. You would buy a ticket on KLM and you would be sure you would be sitting in a KLM plane and enjoy the service you’re used to from KLM.

These days you have to pay some more attention when you book your ticket. I saw some surprised faces at the gate before when there was a Delta plane instead of a KLM plane. Unfortunately the level on service of the different airlines is not aligned so you should really pay attention what your buying. Seat width and pitch can be different as well as seat selection. Also some companies charge for beer and wine which is free on their codeshare partners. (Delta and KLM both offer free beer and wine transatlantic)

Personally I find one of the biggest drawbacks to be the seat selection. I prefer to choose my seats when I book my tickets. This is free for everybody with American Airlines (AA) but British Airways (BA) and Iberia, both partners of AA in oneworld only offer this for free to their top elite customers. So when I’m buying an AA codeshare flight on BA or Iberia I can only choose my seat when I check-in online 24hrs before my flight.

Since consumer organization started criticizing codeshares as not much transparent the airlines started working on aligning their service levels with their codeshare partners but I expect there will always remain some differences.

In these posts I will try to explain what codeshares and alliances are, why the airlines use them and what it means to you as a traveler.

We start with codeshares and will cover alliances in the next post.

A codeshare means 2 or more companies will share the same flight. Each airline will sell seats/tickets for this flight as would it be their own flight. Beneath is an example for a flight from Brussel to New York. This flight is operated by Delta. Both KLM and Air France also sell tickets for this flight with their respective flight numbers.

10:45

BRU

13:05

AF 3658

Non-stop

10:45

BRU

13:05

JFK

DL 141

Non-stop

10:45

BRU

13:05

KL 6141

Non-stop

This is an example from the timetable at brusselsairport.be. In this table the codeshares are indicated with a . Most websites and booking engines do indicate codeshares in some way. (most of them do indicate the operating carrier, the airline that will be operating the flight providing the plane, the crew and the ground handling services, as well)

Airlines do this to extend their network to more destinations or to increase the frequency of flights to certain destinations. KLM for example offers 4 daily flights between Amsterdam and New York. All 4 are codeshares with Delta, 2 of them are operated by KLM, the other 2 by Delta. By offering 4 instead of 2 flights KLM will probably be able to please more customers with a suitable flight.

A codeshared flight means a joint responsibility between all carriers that offer this codeshared flight. If you bought your ticket with KLM with a KL flight number you will always need to contact KLM for any requests. KLM stays responsible for your journey, even if your flight is operated by Delta.

One exception to this rule may be that you will need to check-in with the operating carrier of your first flight, or segment as they call this in aviation terms.

If you see a flight is offered as a codeshare you may well check the different carriers that offer this flight. The operating carrier is not necessarily the cheapest. You should also consider the miles you want to earn. Let’s have a look at the example above and calculate the miles you would earn on this flight between Brussels and NY (JFK). Distance flown is 3662 miles. We do the math as if you would be a member of skymiles/flying blue and would book the ticket as a DL (Delta) ticket or a KL (KLM) ticket. We assume for this matter that you bought a cheap economy class ticket and you have no status with any of the rewards programs.

Program / Ticket

Ticket on Delta

Ticket on KLM

Skymiles (Delta)

3662 (100pct of miles)

3662 (100pct of miles)

Flying Blue (KLM / AirFrance)

915 (25pct of miles)

915 (25pct of miles)

In the above example the main difference is in the mileage program you choose. The operating carrier does not really make a difference. This comes mostly from the fact that US based carriers tend to be quite generous with the miles they offer both for their own as for their partners. It can get more complex as I will show with the below example between British Airways (BA) and Air Berlin (AB) both in Oneworld. For this example we picked a flight from London City Airport to Zurich (473 miles). Same conditions as the above example.

Program / Ticket

Ticket on Air Berlin in economy (T)

Ticket on British Airways in economy (O)

Executive Club (BA)

0 miles (not eligible)

500 miles (500 miles minimum guarantee)

Topbonus (Air Berlin)

500 miles (500 miles minimum guarantee)

125 miles (125 miles minimum guarantee)

As you see it can be worthwhile to look around when shopping for flights. Some flights have up to 7 or 8 codeshares. These are all probably selling at a different price and all offering other mileage accruals. Some puzzling can be to your advantage.

Airlines typically arrange codeshares with their partners inside their alliance. This is however no restriction. Qantas, member of oneworld, for example recently started a codeshare with Emirates that is not part of the oneworld alliance. We look at alliances in the next post.

For the final post in this series, I am going to move solidly into the world of my opinion. Sooner or later, no matter what tool you decide to buy or what project you plan to tackle, you have to find some place to spend your money. I’ll give you a preview, I am governed by “you get what you pay for” in more things than product selection. I will also add my previously mentioned view that you should never visit a store, talk to a salesman and then buy the item off of Amazon in order to save a few bucks. If everybody did that, there would be no local store – think about it and be fair. Also, please add comments regarding suppliers you like or ones located outside CT and the US.

Tools, Bits, Blades and Stuff – I have a lot of tools that were purchased from Lee Valley, and if you ever want to experience a serious drool-inducing hour, crawl through their catalog of Veritas hand tools. The really cool thing about Lee Valley is that if your tool breaks, they will fix it, or help you fix it. If your tool just doesn’t work, or if you think it would work better if… They will refund your money and, if they agree with you, they will redesign the tool. I also buy mail-order from Rocker. I have been buying from them since before they changed their name to Rockler, (I think they were the WoodWorkers Store) and they have always been very easy to deal with. They have almost everything a woodworker needs, and I really do believe that you have to support the vendors who serve the comprehensive needs of woodworkers as opposed to the ones who simply cherry-pick a few profitable items. Since I live in CT, I am fortunate to be able to shop at Coastal Tool. These guys are a large mail-order tool supplier that just happens to be located in a nearby town. They have good prices, and a good selection, but we’re talking tools, not hardware and supplies. Also proximate to me are two WoodCraft stores. I like WoodCraft because they carry a wide range of tools, hardware, stains, finishes and wood, and they seem to be totally staffed by woodworkers. You can discuss a project and get advice from someone who knows exactly what you are doing.

Brands – Most tool brands are good these days as long as you realize that a $29 orbital sander isn’t going to be as good as an $129 sander. In general, I like Delta and Porter Cable for the American-made history that they represent and for the fact that I have yet to wear out one of their tools, including the ones I inherited from my father. I like Bosch, although I wouldn’t say that I am loyal to them. I will say that with the exception of my very first cordless drill, every cordless drill, driver, etc. I have ever owned has been made by Makita. There are lots of very good cordless tools on the market, but I don’t think you can beat the feel of a Makita drill. I like Stanley tools and I am a total fan boy of the Fat Max brand. Your mileage may vary.

Wood – I prefer buying wood at one of the few local lumber yards that maintain a good selection of hardwood. Lately, I have purchased wood for two projects at the WoodCraft store in West Springfield, MA. I can’t speak for all the stores in this chain, but these guys manage to stock some nice lumber. I generally stay away from the big box stores because their hardwood is bland, expensive and no straighter than the pine, poplar and birch that they stock. I have also had good luck ordering wood from Niagara Lumber. You have to be careful, because your wood is coming via UPS and you get lengths that will ship and will be easy to package. I like the quality of the wood I’ve bought from them, but I usually buy a bit more than I would locally because there might be more waste. I have also had good luck with reclaimed and repurposed wood, so keep that possibility in mind.

Information – There are hundreds of blogs, twitter feeds, Facebook pages and websites dedicated to woodworking. Search, bookmark, Like, subscribe, follow etc. I have a charter subscription to Woodsmith Magazine and the companion Shop Notes. They also have a pretty nice show on PBS. I periodically read Fine Woodworking and Fine Home Building, and I have purchased some of their specialty publications addressing specific techniques.

All of the vendors and products I have mentioned throughout this series have websites, white papers and cyber resources to draw on, but your best bet in some cases is to search the web for that guy who does often that thing that you are about to do for the first time and who shares that experience in a blog.

I was lucky, I got upgraded to first class because I reached silver medallion on my Skymiles. I didn’t expect they will give a free upgrade. I was very thrill about it.

Today, I was the first one boarding the plane, it was really a nice experience by being the first. I got seated and the stewardess asked me if I want any drinks, I asked for a coke and she happily gave me. Later on, I was asked what I want to eat, I was offered a bowl of beans and a small dish of chicken. The meal was really fantastic.

Overall, people are nicer to you when you sit first class.

I am going to try to earn more miles so I can always get upgrades for my future trips.

One of the largest mosques in the province will open on Saturday.

The building will serve the local Ahmadiyya Muslim community. What makes the nearly $8 million structure impressive, is that half of the cost of the building was donated by the local community, with just 3,000 people.

Most members of the mosque are from Pakistan, where they faced government persecution.

This weekend, the mosque is expecting thousands of people to turn up for the opening of the building.

And the sect’s leader is coming all the way from the U.K.

“This mosque is an invitation to everyone, without any distinction to their faith, they are welcome to worship to God in this mosque,” said Lal Khan Malik, Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at National president. “So it’s a symbol of unity, it’s a symbol of an invitation to all people to come here and congregate to worship of one God.”

Air Cargo World

May 7, 2013

It’s no secret that the air transport world is a tough business – and a way to improve it is through E-freight, the president of Delta Air Lines says.

“We know that changing behavior can be a challenge, but encouraging the industry to move to E-freight has real tangible benefits,” Edward Bastian says in his keynote address Monday at the CNS Partnership Conference.

E-freight will boost efficiencies across the cargo supply chain, increase the accuracy of information, decrease the chances of human error and move transactions faster. It will create cost savings that affect the bottom line.

“In the end, this will benefit us all,” he says.

In an interview with Air Cargo World, Bastian says as far as implementation of E-freight goes, everyone in the industry is struggling with it. The need to work through the entire supply chain to achieve adoption presents the greatest challenge, he says.

“I don’t think that the airlines or the air cargo carriers have as much control as they’d like over the exercise,” Bastian says. “I think if it was up to the air cargo carriers, you’d see much greater progress.”

In his speech, Bastian also talks about how the industry must move toward risk-based screening for cargo. This will improve the flow of goods through the supply chain.

“[Air Cargo Advance Screening] and programs like it can focus on the shipments that are most likely to present a concern,” he says. “We need to avoid as much complexity in the operation as possible.”

He also speaks about shipping dangerous goods. Though Delta’s agents are trained to handle dangerous goods, cooperation is needed throughout the industry.

“With our competitive tendencies, this is also the biggest challenge,” Bastian says. “One of the challenges the industry must overcome is the fragmenting nature of the issues being addressed.”

But he forecasts that global trade will continue to grow – and airfreight will play a role in transporting those goods around the world.

“I do see signs though in our global economy for cautious optimism,” he says.

The biggest opportunity for Delta in emerging markets is Latin America, especially Brazil, Bastian says. He also says China is a long-term opportunity.

In his interview, Bastian says industries that are willing to pay more for speed will factor into air cargo’s role in the future. He names the biomedical sector, pharmaceuticals, automobile sector and other premium-related products.

Technology trends will also play a part in air cargo’s – and Delta’s – future. Scott Barkley, managing director global cargo operations at Delta, says the airline now scans cargo at every touch point, making Delta more efficient.

Tony Charaf, chief cargo officer for Delta, says down the line, he expects the airfreight business to get rid of scanning in favor of active chips.

“They would transmit information at all times, wherever they are, and it will have automatic readers through satellites that will tell you exactly where every shipment is without any scanning done by any human,” Charaf says. “We are still babies in the woods trying to really get to the level where absolutely we must have that. I think that’s really the end state.”

As far as when chips would be implemented, Bastian says it comes down to the cost of the technology.

“I think that’s the ultimate growth opportunity that we have is to be a leader in that space,” he says. “But it will require some additional efficiencies by the technology.”
