From Academy Award-winning director Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), comes Taking Woodstock, a new comedy inspired by the true story of Elliot Tiber (Demetri Martin) and his family, who inadvertently played a pivotal role in making the famed Woodstock Music and Arts Festival into the happening that it was.

It’s 1969, and Elliot Tiber, a down-on-his-luck interior designer in Greenwich Village, New York, has to move back upstate to help his parents run their dilapidated Catskills motel, The El Monaco. The bank’s about to foreclose; his father wants to burn the place down, but hasn’t paid the insurance; and Elliot is still figuring how to come out to his parents.

When Elliot hears that a neighboring town has pulled the permit on a hippie music festival, he calls the producers, thinking he could drum up some much-needed business for the motel. Three weeks later, half a million people are on their way to his neighbor’s farm in White Lake, NY, and Elliot finds himself swept up in a generation-defining experience that would change his life, and American culture, forever. –© Focus Features

Elliot: Have you guys been down to see the festival yet?
VW Guy: We’re cool…we’ll get there again.
VW Girl: We got to the top of the hill and looked down at the sea…and the tiny little people on stage…with their waves of tiny electric voices.
VW Guy: Like ants making thunder…man…it was cool. But you couldn’t really tell who was jamming down there.

Elliot (Martin) is helping out his parents at their little hotel, despite wanting to be back in New York working as an interior designer. After learning that a neighboring town wouldn’t let a music festival use their land, Elliot contacts them to say that his family has some land they could use. One thing leads to another, and pretty soon there’s millions of hippies descending on this unsuspecting little town.

I’m not real sure what to think about this movie. It’s like an inside look at the lead up to Woodstock, but it’s still stuck on the outside once the festival starts. We don’t see any performers on or off stage, just a few echoes of music in the distance here and there.

Elliot is our doorway into the whole event, but he’s stuck trying to help his parents back at the hotel. That is, until his dad says he should go see the festival himself. Even then, he doesn’t quite make it to the stage. He just gets sidetracked doing acid with some hippies in a VW.

Maybe the point is that it was more about the experience of being there with other people like you, rather than the music. If so, fine, but it doesn’t make for a very compelling movie. In fact, I think “plodding” would be the best word to describe it. A plodding movie. It seems like it’s slowly building up to the big Woodstock experience at the end, but all we get is that hippie van and some people sliding around in the mud.

Don’t get me wrong, it captures all of that atmosphere very well (I assume…I mean, I wasn’t there or anything), but it just never really leads us anywhere. It’s almost like watching a documentary that couldn’t afford to buy the rights to use the music played at the festival. So they were left just showing everything else.

I suppose all of that would have been okay if the characters were more compelling. Unfortunately, aside from Elliot’s rather intense mother, there isn’t much interesting going on with anybody. Eugene Levy was good as the farmer who charges a very high price for permission to use his land for the festival, but he’s not on screen very much.

If you want to see a nice looking, glossed over glimpse into the atmosphere surrounding Woodstock, without the magic of the performances, this could be worth a look. Just don’t expect a compelling story or interesting characters. But hey, you can definitely expect a lot of naked hippies!

Woodstock was…kinda boring.

10 – 2.1 for not having a particularly compelling story or characters – 1 for being so plodding/slow – .9 for lack of any performance scenes = 6.0

One of the biggest parties of the centuries, that nobody who saw this was apart of.

A twenty something man (Demetri Martin) finds his life forever changed in the summer of 1969 when he offers up his parents’ motel in the Catskills as a home base for Woodstock organizers and helps the show go on by donating an all-important music festival permit.

Based on the Elliot Tiber novel, the films aims to tell what happened behind the scenes. Many viewers though looking for spectacular concert footage, will find themselves leaving and wanting a lot more than they got, such as I did myself.

Now, for people that wanted to see all the love and music that was put into Woodstock, go check out the documentary Woodstock. This one doesn’t feature any of the performances, which kind of made me a little ticked off knowing that I wanted to see Woodstock itself, and not necessarily this dysfunctional family that had to deal with it.

The film also has those bunch of crazy cliches that surround the 60s. You got the pot smokers, LSD doers, transvestites, naked hippies, and of course the ones always rolling in the mud. I was expecting a different more fresh look at the crowd rather than just seeing everything that I already know I’m going to see, from a film about the 60s.

Now all that said, the film looks exactly like it was in the 60s during Woodstock. I really did feel like I was apart of this, and this is what made the film a lot more entertaining for me. Director Ang Lee, does a great job at re-imagining these beautiful and cultural images from Woodstock that we all know.

The film isn’t as funny as it just a little cute coming-of-age drama. I liked how the film explored all the ways this nerdy guy tries to become part of this hippie movement, but also has a lot of differences with all of them. Ang Lee also uses the split-screen documentary style to show everything that is going on and it really does work here, and captures the same exact essence the documentary did.

The performances weren’t that good, but they were OK. I wish Demetri Martin was more funny, and to be truly honest I think he was sort of miss cast. The colorful characters that surround him are made up of superstars like Paul Dano, Emile Hirsch, and the real saving grace of this film for me, Liev Schreiber. He is funny as this transvestite, and every time is on-screen brings out a whole bunch of laughs within me.

Consensus: Taking Woodstock has the usual 60s cliches that you would expect, not a lot of hilarious comedy, and an underwhelming atmosphere, but captures the look and feel of Woodstock, and has some nice moments.

Taking Woodstock is Ang Lee’s newest movie, starring Demetri Martin, Imelda Staunton, Emile Hi

Taking Woodstock is Ang Lee’s newest movie, starring Demetri Martin, Imelda Staunton, Emile Hirsch, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Liev Schreiber and Paul Dano.

Plot:
Taking Woodstock is based on the real life story of Elliot Tiber (Demetri Martin), an out of luck interior designer who has to move back to his parents’ motel and of how he gets the Woodstock festival to be in his small town after Woodstock (and a neughbouring village) both pull the permits for it to be held there.

Taking Woodstock is a funny and heartfelt movie but most of all, a movie that manages to capture the spirit of the time (or at least it seems that way to someone who wasn’t alive then). It’s a captivating coming of age story set in slightly crazy but definitely special times that is told with a lot of humour and respect. Loved it.

Taking Woodstock had practically no marketing campaign. If I wasn’t an obsessive looker-at-cinema-posters, I probably would have missed it (even though I’m a huge Ang Lee fan). And I really don’t know why (though I have a theory – there’s plenty of nudity and some swearing and *gasp* gay loving). In any case, the movie didn’t deserve this silence – it really was wonderful.

The acting was amazing. And every ten minutes or so there seemed to be another cameo. (Oh look! It’s Jeffrey Dean Morgan! Oh look! It’s Liev Schreiber! Oh look! It’s Emile Hirsch! Oh look! It’s Paul Dano!) And they just kept on coming.
Imelda Staunton was her usual wonderful self and newcomer Demetri Martin convinced me fully. It just seemed like everybody was really enjoying the shoot and had a lot of fun.

The story has a beautiful lightness to it and yet covers a whole lot of ground – the story of the festival itself, Elliot’s coming of age, Elliot’s parents’ relationship, sex, drugs, morality – it’s actually quite dense when you think about it, but it never feels heavy.

The cinematography is beautiful, but the most beautiful part about it might well be when Elliot tries LSD for the first time – the way the high is shown to us… I never saw such a realistic portrayal of a LSD high. [Just to clarify: I have never taken LSD myself, but this felt amazingly real - not so over the top as many other stylised highs seem to be.]

So, summarising I’d say it was an amazing film that should be a must see for anyone who is even only slightly interested in the Woodstock festival. The only caveat: Don’t expect the Woodstock music: Elliot never really got to hear the bands playing and neither do we.

Final Cut is a weekly film, review and soundtrack show on DCUfm hosted by myself and my mate Diane. In each episode we discuss the latest movie news in Hollywood and at home, review new releases, and play music from their soundtracks. There’s a segment included called ‘Cult Classics with Ciarán and James’, where every week they talk about a specific cult movie. We also have a part tentatively called ‘The Rant’ where we rant about a particular hot topic, genre, actor, director; you get the idea, right? You can also text us live in the studio at 085 7531 973

We’ve been running for about 7 weeks now and our main aim is basically to just try and improve with each show. This week we reviewed Jennifer’s Body (see previous post) The Men Who Stare at Goats (with special guest critic Devin Anderson of The TigerFace Show) and Demetri Martin’s feature debut, Taking Woodstock. Tracks played were:

Final Cut is doing really well with regards to ratings. We currently have the highest text to listener ratio; we just need a few more to make us the highest rated show on the entire station. The format we have right now is serving us well, but because we’re only on for an hour, and also partially because I love the sound of my own voice, we have a tendency to shoot over our allotted time and never seem to fit everything in. So yeah, currently we’re doing ok, but I have a feeling that after Christmas (providing the station renew the show) Final Cut will have a bit of a make-over. I’d love to get a few more interviews in. So far this semester we’ve had Jen Davis and Sinéad Greenan, who won two awards at this year’s Touch Film Festival. (Jen is also in my course but we’ll skim over that for the meantime)

Anyway, I really enjoyed that. I loved hearing different voices on the show. We also have this little arrangement with the Lighthouse Cinema in Smithfield, where they let us go and record vox pops after shows, but it’s difficult for Diane and I to get out there every week, so some people who’d be interested doing that next semester would be greatly appreciated.

I love doing this show and subsequently it’s become a fairly big part of college this year, which is why I seriously hope we carry on into semester two. We used to pre-record but you get such a buzz out of live radio, primarily because you never really know what’s gonna happen next, or more appropriately what’s gonna be said next.

Carly: “To quote Jennifer herself, she’s not even a backdoor virgin.”

Diane: “ Wait, what’s a backdoor virgin?”

Carly: “…….. HAHAHAHAHA!”

At the end of the semester we’ll be composing a blooper reel from some of the practise stuff we recorded over the summer when we were first getting to grips with the station, along with a few of our funnier moments live on air.

Diane: “So Carly, do you have those Borat clips for our lovely listeners?”

Carly: “No.”

Silence

Both: “lol”

Remember the Amphitheater meet? To really understand CSA one has to look beyond the managerial aspects of it and delve into its technical as well as social depths.

Friday the 13th, a get-together of the association with Demetri Martin’s award-winning ‘If I’ video to be aired as a starter followed by the semester review meeting. There was a decent audience that gathered despite the chilly night and the sudden illness that many of them (inside and outside the association) took to.

The introduction ‘nubes‘ receive for Demetri is thus:

he composes everything on his own for his show: the music, the art and the witty lines of course;

his jokes are not just funny but they are thought-provoking;

The show takes us through different phases of Demetri’s life by exploring the dictionary meanings of the word ‘IF‘ and using it to explain some why he did the things he did. Here are the hidden thoughts that should get you searching You Tube for the videos (the links can be found below).

Trying/Doing things that you really like: Does solving the cube interest you more than studying for a mid-term test, go ahead!

Achieving technical competency in areas where you think you are good: Good at social media? When a social media activist asks you to talk about it for five minutes on the topic are you up to it?

Keeping your mind strong through self-imposed hurdles: Does waving at the girl-next-door scare you? Do at least one thing everyday that makes you feel scared/insecure.

Trust me, you’ll find your niche in the one hour you spend on it. The entire video is in 6 parts of nine minutes each:

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

Part 4

Part 5

Part 6

55minutes of watching and 5 minutes of reflection (maybe a blog post?) should make your day! Hope you have all the fun in the world, provided IF you have access to youtube…

Taking Woodstock (2009)
★★★ / ★★★★

Directed by Ang Lee (“The Ice Storm,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” “Brokeback Mountain”), “Taking Woodstock” was about the summer of 1969 and the flourishing counterculture that culminated in the Woodstock Music and Arts Festival. Caught among the powerful movement was a family and their debt concerning a motel that no one ever visits. Demetri Martin tried to help out his mother (Imelda Staunton) and father (Henry Goodman) with money and moral support as best he could to the point where he had to sacrifice his career as an interior designer. Stuck in the ennui of rural town, the arrival of his childhood friend (Jonathan Groff) and concert organizers gave Martin and his family a chance to finally get out of debt. The only catch was that they had to somehow take in hundreds and thousands of people (which eventually grew to about a million or so) and deal with the frustrations of the citizens of their own town, the neighboring cities and the media coverage. They also had to find a land owner (Eugene Levy) who was willing to take in all sorts of people and be able to deal with the mess afterwards.

I’ll admit right away that “Taking Woodstock” could have been so much bigger and more interesting. However, I do admire Lee’s choice of telling a story from a struggling family’s perspective, especially from a son who was more than ready to leave the nest but was chained at home because of his own guilt of abandoning his parents when they needed him most. Making that decision gave the film a much-needed heart. I was amused when I saw the family dynamics because Staunton was so intense, Goodman was so passive and Martin was inbetween. But then there were truly touching moments, especially a scene toward the end between Martin and his father when the son finally summoned the courage to do whatever it was that he wanted to do in the first place.

The storytelling was light (even for a comedy-drama) and all over the place which worked at some parts because it reflected that era. With a little bit more focus on the event at hand, stronger script and storytelling, this could have been an Oscar contender. I also would have liked to see more of Jonathan Groff. He had a certain spark about him that intrigued me. It might have been his extremely laidback nature or the way he looked into the main character’s eyes, I’m not exactly sure, but what I’m sure of is that the film would have benefited if it had fully explored characters. On the other hand, as much as I love Emile Hirsch, I felt like his character was simpy a distraction. His scenes could have been cut off from the picture and the final product would pretty much have been the same. But then Liev Schreiber as a cross-dresser and having great comedic timing really had me engaged. With this picture, one thing that didn’t work was almost always coupled with two or three things that worked.

I cannot say that “Taking Woodstock” was a disappointment because it managed to entertain and it had a fresh perspective on the monumental event. But it definitely would have won extra brownie points if it had actual footages of several artists’ performance such as Janis Joplin or Jimi Hendrix, or at least a restaging of some sort.

It seemed everywhere you looked this August there was a mention of Woodstock. The 40th anniversary of the festival brought back a lot of memories, most noticeably with the release of Taking Woodstock, the newest movie from the Oscar winning director Ang Lee.

Elliot Tiber (Demetri Martin) is the focal point of the story. He unselfishly puts his own life on hold to help his parents avoid the foreclosure of their rundown motel. After being denied loans by several banks, he hears about a music festival that had been cancelled in a nearby town. Thinking the festival would bring in a lot of fast cash for his parents, he schedules it in his town with the help of his neighbor Max Yasgur (Eugene Levy). At this point, the crowds start to roll in, bringing with them plenty of money and drugs, giving Elliot the freedom he always craved, so he could finally become who he really is.

Taking Woodstock is a fun, crazy, coming of age story, and the cast was terrific. Martin plays his character really well; he is awkward and careful … just how you would be if you had never truly been yourself around the people closest to you. Emile Hirsch, who played a troubled Vietnam veteran, was able to convey the psychological pain that many veterans faced after the war, yet still be funny and endearing. Liev Schreiber, who played a cross-dressing bodyguard, stole the movie for me. Not only did he have some of the best lines in the movie, but you looked forward to the time when he was on screen.

If you are looking for a movie about Woodstock that has some clips or reenactments of the performers, this movie isn’t for you. Instead, Woodstock takes a back seat in this film so that it can properly tell Elliot’s story. You do catch a few glimpses of the festival though. In one amazing shot where Elliot takes acid, he climbs to the top of a hill to look over the swaying crowd. Slowly, the crowd starts to evaporate and turn into a wave that you would see in the ocean. This shot was truly magical and made the movie worth seeing!

Overall: B+

C. 25 10/19/09 Saturday night, I went to my alma mater, UMBC for its Homecoming. I’m not norm

C. 25 10/19/09

Saturday night, I went to my alma mater, UMBC for its Homecoming. I’m not normally one for excessive amounts of school spirit, and I didn’t go to last year’s Homecoming, my first year out of school. But when I found out that one of my favorite comedians, Demetri Martin would be the star of this year’s Homecoming Comedy Show, I couldn’t pass that up.

Martin, a relatively new comedian on the scene (compared to say, the likes of Lewis Black or Tracy Morgan, both who I have also seen at UMBC Homecoming shows) is well known for his one-liners and clever yet blunt observations. Take his clever lines from Saturday’s show:

I saw a lady at the airport wearing sweatpants. They said, “Gap” on the back. You don’t need to advertise that, you know.

Some people say things are “super duper,” but what if it’s not that super? I’m going to start calling things just plain “duper.” Like, that was such a duper show.

I’m not superstitious, I’m just “stitious.” I have just the right amount of “stish.”

And my two favorite lines from that night:

A question mark is an exclamation point with scoliosis.

If someone asks you what you do for a living, tell them you are a business card maker. Then, pull out a business card that says, “See?”

I love typography jokes and graphic design jokes. A business card designer? I do that! For real!

Another thing Martin did that was memorable during the show (although maybe not so great) was that he kept using a laser pointer to point out people in the audience who had their camera lights on as they were obviously recording his show. He got noticeably annoyed with these people, and even lost his train of thought after complaining about being taped. Maybe the event organizers should have written on the tickets that any kind of recording would not be permitted. I guess it’s too late now, and Martin did get his point across, if eventually.

One of the most memorable aspects of the night actually happened before the show even started. As I had predicted, the gym where the show took place was getting hot, as the audience was packing themselves into the crowded space. I was sitting on the top row of the bleachers, and stood up to take my jacket off. I didn’t think anything of it when I dropped my jacket onto what I figured would be my seat. However, instead my jacket fell behind the bleachers and all the way down to the ground underneath. I was horrified. My jacket had fallen to the depths of the UMBC bleachers and it seemed like I would never recover it again. There were many worried and stressed conversations with security guards and personnel and I was left with the solution that I could come back the next day when the management would have pushed the bleachers in after the show. I was not satisfied with this decision and the idea of driving an hour back to the school and possibly miss my kickball game the next day, but it seemed like I had no other choice.

Well anyways, the show started and this girl in front of me took her cellphone out, I think to use its camera. Just like me, she accidentally dropped her phone and it too, fell underneath the bleachers. She also went to seek the help from a guard, but soon thereafter came back to her seat. Despite our “missing” personal items, I found both of us soon forgetting our misfortunes and laughing along at the great comedy show. I guess that means Demetri Martin is just that successful at what he does.

In the end, after the show, we were able to find and convince some personnel to push the bleachers in far enough so that a number of people could walk underneath the bleacher’s skeleton to retrieve our fallen things. It was a pretty strange adventure, but also kind of cool. But really, I’m just duper glad it all worked out in the end!

Kommen Punkte bald wieder ?

Ο σεναριογράφος, αλλά και παραγωγός, Τζέιμς Σάμις διασκεύασε γα τον κινηματογράφο το βιβλίο “Taking Woodstock: A True Story of a Riot, A Concert, and A Life” των Έλιοτ Τίμπερ και Τομ Μόντε.

Trivia

There is a tenderness to Ang Lee’s direction in his latest film- the sort of tenderness you felt in Lust, Caution but leaning toward the Brokeback Mountain sort of tenderness. Yuh it’s all tender in ‘69 alright.

Elliot, a closeted Jewish interior designer decides to help out with his parents’ failing motel by calling up the producers of the Woodstock music festival in hopes of reinvigorating business. And that’s basically all you need to know about Taking Woodstock.

Despite my lack of knowledge for anything about this movie, I enjoyed Taking Woodstock immensely (seeing Liev Schreiber in drag wasn’t half bad either haha). It’s the kind of movie I wish that wouldn’t end; which falls into whole new movie category I can say that I encounter only once in every five years.

Taking Woodstock had all the potential of being laden with teen angst and rebellion but Lee was clever enough to tread these matters lightly while keeping the mood essentially vibrant. He plays it somber when called for, and does it with class. There is a scene between Elliot, the lead character and his father in which he asks him “How do you do it? How can you stay married to mom (an amazing Imelda Staunton, btw) for 40 years?” In the same uninterrupted take and in the same neutral-looking long shot (without any unecessary close-ups and lingering dramatic silences) he turns around and says “I love her,” and walks out the door leaving Elliot in the dark.

Right then and there you’ll know that ‘Taking Woodstock’ isn’t about the concert- hell, it isn’t even about the music. I won’t say what it’s about but I will tell you this- go see it for that necessary dose of film nourishment.

Dentro all’onda hippy c’è di tutto.

Mettendo una croce sopra a un palco dove sarebbero saliti Hendix, Joplin, Who, The Band, Santana e tanti altri.

FlashForward: Channel 5 (Recorded 28th Sept Watched 4th Oct)

This was the first episode of a new high concept US drama series in which the entire planet’s population blacks out for two minutes (and 17 seconds) and has a vision of their future. It’s an intriguing premise, but my main question during the show was whether that glamorous blonde model lady was really likely to be a terrorist. I don’t want to judge a book by its cover, but I’m guessing it wasn’t very likely.

And the plot itself? Well, the writers have a difficult job to achieve in the opening episode of these kind of programmes as they have to set the scene and establish the concept, as well as trying to make an hour of gripping television. I’m not entirely sure that they succeeded, and none of the characters are compelling at the moment, but it’s definitely interesting enough for me to give it time to bed in.

I have to give a special mention to the FBI agent who, within a few hours, was able to check every CCTV camera in the world, and then pick out a single person in a sports arena, who wasn’t even visible. That’s quite an impressive morning’s work.

10 Things I Hate About You: Fiver (R 30th Sept W 4th Oct)

After watching the first episode, last week, it took less than a minute of this second episode before I decided that I really shouldn’t be watching this and deleted it. There’s nothing wrong with it per se, I’m just very much in the wrong demographic, and I felt slightly wrong for even having recorded it.

Life: ITV3 (R 30th W 4th Oct)

‘3 Women’ – Charlie has a new (temporary) partner, so I can only assume that Sarah Shahi is still on maternity leave. Having written that last sentence, I realised that I’m just assuming, so I did a quick google and she really was pregnant. Maybe I really should be a detective.

Perhaps I should make a comment on the programme itself while I’m here. Although, I don’t really have a great deal to say about it. It’s an enjoyable enough hour of television, but I could honestly take it or leave it. The most interesting thing about it is the way that the tone of the show has shifted so much since the start of season one that you’d barely know it was the same series.

Eastbound and Down: FX (R 1st Oct W 5th Oct)

This was the first episode of a new comedy series that one of the broadsheets compared favourably with Alan Partridge and Curb Your Enthusiasm. In which case, it was was almost inevitable that it was going to disappoint, and it did. I found it staggeringly unfunny.

It’s the story of Kenny Powers, an egotistical and bankrupt (morally and financially), former baseball star, who returns to his home town. There’s a knack to being a successful unlikeable comedy character; you have to be either unlikeable but somehow still likeable or unlikeable but really funny. Powers is neither, he’s just crass but boring (crass and funny would have been more than OK). Strangely, I’ll probably give this another go; sometimes when a comedy is ‘different’ it can take you a while to tune in to it. Let’s hope for a drastic improvement then.

Important Things with Demetri Martin: E4 (R 1st Oct W 5th Oct)

Episode 2. I really wanted to like it. I didn’t. I deleted it.

How Not To Live Your Life: BBC HD (R 6th Oct W 7th Oct)

‘Don Goes Gay’ – This could have been another stereotypical, ‘let’s laugh at the gays’, half hour of comedy, but it ended up being the funniest episode yet. Instead of being freaked out by someone assuming he was gay, Don decided that he must be gay and fully embraced becoming a ‘gayman’. The results were hilarious and were clearly poking fun at his preconceptions of what it meant to be gay.

Taking Woodstock was a disappointing show, a pretty wasted effort especially with a such stellar cast, all of whom had potential to be the “one who’s going to be the next sumthing sumthin”. There was that random transvestite who outstayed his randomness, that woman from Harry Potter, Speed Racer shaking his balls for a while, and too much lady lumps for my liking. The only thing that i liked about the movie is the notion that you can choose to either take a helicopter or ride a horse to work. Kudos to rich ridiculous hippie people.

But then there is Demetri Martin, that guy who’s destined to be the next Michael Cera at the ripe old age of 36 (kinda hard to swallow right? If that guy’s 36, it’s gotta be a fake ID). It’s also hard to believe that Ang Lee managed to take the comedy out of this guy as well as the entire show filled with comedic geniuses like Eugene Levy (the funniest line of the movie had something to do with raping cattle.. go figure).

But I’m still in awe..Demetri Martin playing a lead role under a highly acclaimed Oscar winning director in a movie about music, free loving and nervous homosexuals. What a brilliant choice of casting.

Wong Kar Wai, if you feel like you’ve missed the train, here’s a big shout out to Jermaine Clement and Benjamin Mackenzie. Put them in a crazy homoerotic thriller-comedy co-starring Murray and their wicked blankets. Pretty please!

In what may possibly become a regular new feature, I’m going to take a look at some of the television shows that I’ve been watching in the last few days. Given that I struggle to keep up with all the shows that I record on Sky Plus, I also include the date that the programme was recorded, so you know which episode I’m talking about.

Life: ITV3 (Rec 23rd Sept -Watched 30th Sept)

In this episode, Reese is still not around and Charlie is being partnered by Bobby, who is not quite as attractive. I was somewhat baffled last week as to why she was being sidelined (see here), but now I’m assuming that Sarah Shahi was pregnant when these episodes were being filmed, as, in the few scenes she is in, she is always filmed from the chest up, or sat behind a desk. I should probably be a detective myself with that sort of deduction. Pregnant or not, she still looks amazing.

Demetri Martin: Person: E4 (R 23rd Sept – W 30th Sept)

This is a recording of a live show of the stand up comedian which E4 showed as a pre-cursor to his regular series, Important Things with Demetri Martin, which I’d already seen. I really struggled with this, and somehow, I just don’t think he works in front of a live audience, although I’m not entirely sure why it is that I think that. He somehow doesn’t seem like a performer, so it made me feel quite uncomfortable to watch and I gave up after 10 minutes. Curiously, for someone who loves stand up, I never seem to be able to watch recorded live shows from US comedians.

True Blood: FX (R 25th Sept – W 30th Sept)

This was the penultimate episode of season one, and, eleven episodes in, it remains a mystery. I still don’t know what the show is or what it is about. That said, this wasn’t a bad episode, and they finally move things forward with the whole serial killer sub-plot; sadly, this involved lots of Sookie and Sam doing boring stuff. The most interesting part of the programme is to do with the vampires, and annoyingly we only get about 30 seconds of this in the first 40 minutes and instead we get Jason and Amy (yawn). Finally, we get a scene with Bill and Jessica, the girl who he was forced to turn in to a vampire last week. This whole sequence was easily the best scene in the series so far, and provided a tantalising glimpse of what could have been. Before we know it though, we’re back to a boring Tara scene.

The episode was probably better than the last paragraph would lead you to believe, I just find the programme so frustrating. I really don’t know what to make of all the Sam and Sookie stuff, especially when Bill returned. It’s like they just did it all for a bit of soap opera style tension. And I was open-mouthed at the plot with Tara and the ’social worker’ – someone with such an obvious hidden agenda that the only way they can salvage any credibility is if they have a twist of her just being a really nice lady.

I completely missed the plot twist with the faxed photo at the end, until it was explained to me. I guess it shows how much I’ve been paying attention. I’ll try and do a season review once I’ve seen the last episode.

Charlie Brooker’s Gameswipe: BBC4 (R 29th Sept – W 30th Sept)

This jumped its place in the queue just because it’s a new Charlie Brooker programme. I was really excited to watch this, even though I’m not in to gaming. If you’re a TV fan and you’ve never watched his series, Screenwipe, then you owe it to yourself to go hunt it down.

It’s probably about time that gaming got a bit of proper coverage on TV and there’s no one better to provide it than Mr Brooker. The bits explaining the different genres was perhaps a bit over-egged, but, because it’s CB, it was still incredibly entertaining and very funny. The segments with Dara O’Briain and Graham Linehan were also excellent and it is impressive to get such quality contributors. Although, it did prompt the question as to whether the Irish are particularly enamoured of video games.

Ink! Alter Egos Exposed: Sky Arts 1 (Rec 28th Sept – W 1st Oct)

I commented after watching the first episode of this and we’re now on episode 4, Social Relevance. I’m still not sure what I’m learning from this series or what new insights I’m gaining, but it’s nice to listen to comic book people talking about their work. But that comes from thirty years of being a comic book geek. I’d be very interested to know what non-comic book readers think of the series and if it changed any of their preconceptions.

Chuck: Virgin1 (R 29th Sept -W 1st Oct)

This episode was titled ‘Chuck vs the Predator’; sadly there were no alien hunters involved. After the excellent conclusion to last week’s episode, this was a slightly mixed bag. On the positive side, the Fulcrum/Orion plot moved forward, and continued on from last week’s revelations. We even had a glimpse behind the scenes at Fulcrum and finally got a feeling on how big a threat they are to national security. All this is helping to give the series a much needed focus. On the other hand, the stupid Buy More sub-plot was stupider than ever, and it seemed completely incongruous with the rest of the show. Oh well, swings and roundabouts I guess!

Design for Life: BBC2 (R 28th Sept -W 2nd Oct)

This is the kind of show that the BBC does really well; what could seem like a bit of cheap reality TV is actually completely fascinating. The idea behind the show is that 12 English design students compete to win a 6-month placement to work with Philippe Starck, in Paris. It’s a real coup to get Starck involved as he is perhaps the most famous product designer in the world, and, luckily for TV purposes, something of an oddball. It’s kind of like an esoteric, gallic version of The Apprentice.

In this, the third episode 3, the eight remaining students were given yet another incomprehensible challenge by hard taskmaster, Starck. As the students deliberately receive no guidance, it’s only on day 6 of 7 that they all realise that they had all misunderstood the brief. This led to lots of scenes of Starck looking simultaneously disappointed and bewildered. In the end, he wanted to send them all home but couldn’t because it would have meant ending the series; they all stayed. Compelling viewing.

Spiral: BBC4 (R 27th Sept – W 2nd Oct)

We’ll stay in France for the final programme of the post, and another another excellent episode of Spiral. I had previously questioned whether I’d be enjoying this as much if it was in English, but I’ve come to the conclusion that I definitely would. It’s just a bonus that because it has subtitles it’s the one show a week where I have to pay full attention.

It’s now episode 3 and all the plot threads are nicely weaving together. This season, so far, belongs to Joséphine Karlsson (Audrey Fleurot), the dodgy lawyer. We see her both acting unscrupulously and calculatingly with her clients, and also spiralling out of control in her personal life and dealings with the shady Mr Szabo. You just know it’s not going to end well.

Elsewhere, I feel compelled to petition Canal+ to create a spin-off Judge Roban series; he’s like a French Columbo.

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve started watching a few new comedy shows, so I thought I

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve started watching a few new comedy shows, so I thought I’d talk to you about them. Conveniently, they are all on different nights of the week and so they format of the post has been conveniently set – thanks to the schedulers for making my life easier.

Monday: Home Time (BBC 2/BBC HD)

This is a brand new sitcom written by, and starring, Emma Fryer. I’ve seen the first two episodes and episode 3 will have been on by the time you read this. It’s the story of Gaynor (Fryer) who ran away to London at the age of 17 and then suddenly returns to Coventry after 12 years. It has similarities to those ‘dark’ comedies that are knocking about – nobody is happy and all Gaynor’s friends are freaky and slightly scary. Somehow though, it doesn’t feel too ‘dark’ and Fryer’s performance is realistically subdued. The first episode took a while to get going, but it’s pretty funny and worth a watch.

Tuesday: How Not To Live Your Life (BBC3/BBC HD)

The second series of Dan Clark’s sitcom started a couple of weeks ago and was a welcome return. The premise is that Don Danbury (Clark) inherits a house from his grandmother and then proceeds to do as little as possible, ably abetted by his nan’s carer Eddie (David Armand), who just keeps turning up at the house for no particular reason. Series one also featured Don’s lodger, Abby (Sinead Moynihan) and her boorish boyfriend Karl (Finlay Robertson); many of the plots revolved around Don’s inept attempts at wooing Abby.

There has been a cast re-jig for the new series and Abby and Karl have left to be replaced by Samantha (new lodger) and Don’s next door neighbour Mrs Treacher. It was an excellent bit of casting to replace the gorgeous Moynihan with the even more gorgeous Laura Haddock. I think that Haddock is more of a natural actor than her predecessor and so should provide a good foil for Don.

I really like this show for the simple reason that it makes me laugh. Old fashioned, I know. Don is a classic sitcom archetype, the absolute dick who is lovable despite being completely unlovable. It also features some clever fantasy sequences whenever Don has an awkward moment (quite often) and we get the ‘top 5 things not to say..’ in that situation.

Wednesday: 10 Things I Hate About You (Fiver)

A sitcom spin-off of a film made ten years ago doesn’t sound all that promising, but I read the following tweet from my good friends at Unpopcult:

Sitcom version of “10 Things I Hate About You” starts tonight 9pm on Fiver. US feedback surprisingly positive, might be worth a look.

This isn’t the kind of show that I would normally watch, but if you use the phrase, ‘feedback surprisingly positive’, then I feel almost compelled to give it a go. It follows the same basic premise as the movie: there are two sisters in high school, the younger one wants to be popular, the older one doesn’t. There’s some boys involved and that’s about it. How much more do you want? OK, the plot of the film was actually based on Shakespeare’s The Taming of The Shrew, so go read that if you want to know more.

I’ve only seen the first episode so far, but it seemed a quite likeable show. I’m just not entirely sure how funny it is, and that should kind of be a prerequisite for a comedy. That said, I’ve certainly stuck with worse shows, so I’ll probably give it another chance.

Thursday: Important Things with Demetri Martin (E4)

I’ve heard of this show from the internet, although I can’t remember whether it was supposed to be good or not. I do remember seeing Martin on a BBC special about 5 years ago and quite liking his quirky, nerdy stand up. So, I gave the first episode of Interesting Things a go. It’s a mixture of stand up, sketches and a few other weird little film bits. It feels very much like a BBC show made by an American network. I’m not sure exactly how funny it is; the humour is more quirky than laugh-out-loud funny, which is fine, but the over-enthusiastic studio audience spoil things. That said, it’s different enough to keep me watching for now, and I’m happy to give the second episode a try.

Friday: Peep Show (Channel 4/HD)

We’re now two episodes in to the sixth series of Peep Show, and the news is that it’s still funny. Hooray. If you’ve not seen it before, then what on earth are you doing? Go out and buy series 1-5 on DVD immediately! You can get them all in a box set on Amazon for £15.48, so you really have no excuse.

For those of you who haven’t seen it, it’s the story of Mark (a neurotic nerd) and his lodger and university friend Jeremy (wannabe musician and all round idiot). Peep Show is shot in an unusual way as the action is often shown from the character’s POV. We also hear Mark and Jeremy’s thoughts, which sounds bad on paper, but adds a whole new layer of comedy. It’s good to see a ‘cult’ sitcom make it to six series, but I urge you all to watch as it should get much higher viewing figures than it does.

Ramblings: More Wood, Less Stock

Final Proof: 2½ Stars

You know that disappointment when you go to the kitchen for another glass, knowing you still have a lot of drinking left in the bottle, only to find the fifth is running on fumes and there’s not even a full glass left? This is the sinking feeling that settled on me during Taking Woodstock.

Ang Lee, (director of Sense and Sensibility and Brokeback Mountain) has made a movie not about the 3-day festival of Peace & Music, but the town next to it instead.

While the historical accuracy of the movie is impressive and the scenes at the fringe of the concert were techniqued to look extremely authentic, the film is as boring as Bethel NY and the acting as bad as the brown acid.

Emile Hirsch’s performance is more miss than hit as he intensifies the stereotype of a shell-shocked Vietnam vet. Worse, Demetri Martin, the unfortunate lead, bit off more than he could chew with this meaty role so for two hours we get to see him choke on screen.

i’ll give this thing 2½ shots because Lee tried so damn hard but he fell far short of his goal to recreate the spirit of Woodstock. Woodstock, the festival, was not ‘made’ it just ‘happened’–Lee failed to see you can’t plan spontaneity.

Buzz Kills (Watch Out for Spoilers)

Sex: 2 Shots

Lots of 60’s nudity with hippies bathing in the lake, welcoming helicopters on the lawn and putting on a play naked. While there’s a glimpse of Hirsch’s dangler, the best looking Earthlight Player (the acting troupe in the yard and on the stage) was Jennifer Merrill. You gotta have a quick eye, though, if you want to single her out.

My Favorite Earthlight Player

The movie also provides some cute shots of Meryl Streep’s daughter, Mamie Gummer (sounds like a lesbian grandma’s name), in tight hip-huggers.

Mamie Gummer

Oh yeah, there’s also a cute scene with a gay kiss for those of you who drink out of that side of the glass.

Drinks: 1 Shot

As this story takes place in the 60’s, the drug of choice isn’t booze but weed. Meaning beyond the scope of this blog, sorry babes.

There was some beer drinking in a motel bar.

While skirting along the outskirts of the masses, two hippies offer our hero a hit of their wine and then a hit of their LSD. This was the most sincere scene of the movie and Lee did a sensational job of filming the acid trip.

Rock & Roll: 1 Shot

You see a movie about Woodstock and you expect to hear music from Woodstock, right? Wrong! Instead of using authentic songs from the epoch, Danny Elfman plays vaguely folksy incidental background music throughout the movie. There were more real songs during the end credits than the rest of the entire freaking film.

For all his efforts at veracity, Lang missed beat here.

The first actual song is the Doors’ “Maggie McGill”, which is a great tune, but the Doors weren’t at Woodstock.

Ditto Blind Faith. “Can’t Find My Way Home” is a very significant song in the mellow drama that is my life, and it suited the aftermath of the concert well, but Blind Faith was performing in Hawaii towards the end of August 1969. You can’t get much farther from Woodstock.

Trust me, you’re better off buying the DVD documentary than paying to see Taking Woodstock. After seeing TW, that’s what you’re gonna do anyway.
