The String of Pearls – the original tale of Sweeney Todd, a classic of British horror – was first published as a weekly serial in 1846-47 by Edward Lloyd, the King of the Penny Dreadfuls. One of the earliest detective stories, it became an important source for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. After 157 years of obscurity, it appears here for the first time in book form.

The String Of Pearls is usually credited to Thomas Peckett Prest, but Dick Collins is having none of it! His introductory essay is as welcome as the book itself and he makes a good argument for three – possibly four – authors taking turns at contributing chapters. According to Mr. Collins, the fact that almost everyone has credited the story to Prest is all the fault of “that worst of critics” Montague Summers who certainly has plenty of previous. I mean, far be it from me to accuse anyone of sloppy research but you’re advised to double-check any of “Dear Old Monty’s” “facts” because he’s about as reliable as your average Wikpedia entry.

Povestea lui Sweeney Todd cerea pur si simplu atingerea baghetei lui Tim Burton. Si iata ca inevitabilul s-a produs si a iesit o adevarata capodopera cinematografica. De ce mi-a placut atat de mult acest film? Pentru ca e atat de complex, complet, exact un film pe gustul meu. E in acelsi timp gothic, macabru, morbid, trist, romantic, pe alocuri amuzant, liric si per total, extrem de frumos.

O picatura de sange ne introduce in lumea gri si moarta a lui Benjamin Barker, candva fericitul barbier care traia un vis alaturi de o sotie frumoasa si un copilas minunat. Dar lumea plina de viata si culoare a lui Barker a murit acum 15 ani, cand a fost inchis pe nedrept, iar acum nu a ramas decat un om condus de razbunare si care are drept cel mai bun prieten taisul mortal al briciului. Asa ca, faceti cunostinta cu Sweeney Todd! El taie gatlejuri fara mila, iar doamna Lovett ii completeaza munca si il ajuta sa se debaraseze de cadavre facandu-le … placinta.

Nici distrubutia nu este de ignorat. Am remarcat un Johnny Depp pur si simplu superb, chiar daca are cearcane adanci in jurul ochilor, o Hellena Bonham Carter fermecatoare, chiar daca uneori pare un demon de femeie, si nu in ultimul rand un Alan Rickman parca mai impunator si mai rau ca niciodata.

Si cum viata este mai frumoasa prin cantec, “Sweeney Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street” abunda in pasaje muzicale mai mult decat oricare alta opera burtoniana. Dar nu face audienta sa motaie plictisita in fata ecranului, din contra, o trezezste la viata, o face sa fredoneze refrenuri romantice, sa simta si sa planga.

Acestea fiind spuse, va invit la film, in caz ca ati ratat ocazia!

I guess I’m suppose to find a full time job right now, but i’ll proberly leave that to next week. This week is pure play time !!

Recently watched quite alot of movies…
One that really captured my attention was

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Benjamin Barker, a.k.a Sweeney Todd aka Jonny DIPP ! He is just the perfect guy for this film.
I don’t really understand this movie..
HOW THE HELL can you mix horror & musical together !?!?
It just doesn’t sound right to me! maybe i’m just not used to it yet..
But the singing is a major part of the story , very meaningful

The part where Mr Todd went on a killing spree, with lots of blood spilling everywhere , burning the dead bodies and using the dead bodies as a secret recipe for Mrs Lovett’s pie. I’m like laughing the whole time ~_~

I also don’t understand why Mrs Lovett loves Sweeney Todd, very little explanation on that also.

BUT BUT BUT …

Its a good show !!! very different , not your usual iamlegend or batman or superman. The musical part just turns me off and i just found out that this film is based on stage show in london.. Hmm .. Interesting.

The ending simply rocks my socks !! was so touched ..

i am a tim burton fanboy.

there. i admitted it. even with such depositions, sweeney todd: the demon barber of fleet street is more than your garden variety burton escapade. in todd, burton explores the macabre horror that he touched upon in sleepy hollow; and with doing so, creates a compelling and quirky off-beat dark comedy.

burton is known for his uncommon brand of directing and the stories he tells [or retells] with his photoplay. with sweeney todd, his outre sense of direction takes every viewer for a fantastic ride. the dark exterior, sprinkled intermediately with dainty and purposely bright settings, is a natural setting for this novel project.

in burton and depps sixth outing together, they mesh in perfect rhythm. depp captures the essence of a sad and vengeful coiffeur, at times encompassing so many emotions at once he becomes what he is playing: a mad man. with a passing glance, sweeney todd seems like an standard burton flick; but look deeper. the story is an overlooked classic.

sweeney todd has been a horror musical for decades, made classic with the astounding musical renditions of stephen sondheim. sondeheims music is remixed for this updated chiller. the singing parts of the music were surprisingly well done. rickman [dogma, the harry potter movies] and depp do their best, standing strong in a cast of more talented melodists, but the warbler who steals the show is the young ed sanders [in his film debut.]

even sacha baron cohen, the irritating borat, is charming as an italian entertainer. the strength and foundation of the movie is in it’s cast; a perpetual all-star line up under the guidance of a balls out director. the grim general overtone of this cinematic wonder is constantly given breaks with clever and subtle humor, done so precisely that it becomes an expected [and looked forward to] twist in the film.

it’s truly a beautiful scene: a musical-horror-dark comedy-tragedy played out by talented and revered actors. the gore splattering lyrical adventure is magical.

bottom line: see it. buy it. deny to love it or embrace it. tim burton hits another home run, an upward glance from his less than stellar works as of late.

the movie is comparable to: edward scissorhands, sleepy hollow, moulin rouge, a romp through england encountering every eccentric and nearly terrifying character on the streets of the city of industrialization

Yehey! Sweeney Todd will finally be shown here in the Philippines Wednesday next week, January 16, 2008. It was shown in the US last December and I heard it was really good and super graphic. I’m guessing they delayed showing it here to give way to the Metro Manila Film Festival, which had pretty crappy entries this year by the way. Anyway, at least it’s finally coming. I saw it’s R-18. It’s supposed to be a musical but really gory. I can’t wait to see Johnny Depp and hear his singing. Apparently, this is the first time he actually sings in a movie and based on the trailer, it’s not bad at all. This is directed by Tim Burton and it also stars his girlfriend, Helena Bonham Carter (Corpse Bride, Harry Potter OOTP), Alan Rickman (Harry Potter movies), Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat).

By the way, I think I read from this forum that Death Note is going to be remade into a live action Hollywood film as well. It was also indicated that Johnny Depp is interested in the part of L. I guess this might be true, except for the Johnny Depp part… I don’t know, it sounds so made up. Although L’s character does seem to be the type that would appeal to Johnny Depp. Even though I love Johnny, I still think of Kenichi Matsuyama as the perfect L. Plus, Johnny might be too old for L. But if they’re gonna do a Hollywood version, I guess he’d do a pretty good job as L (he’s always good naman e).

Finally saw Tim Burton’s rocking version of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” over the weekend and let me tell ya, it’s bloody good…emphasis on the bloody. Seriously, I haven’t seen this much spraying, operatic bloodletting since the first volume of “Kill Bill”, and that time, the bloodiest scenes were in black and white.

Well, not so here, amigos. Tim Burton’s bright, comic-book-red blood flows freely and often…and it couldn’t be cooler!

Save for the standards “Pretty Women” and “Not While I’m Around” — which are way darker in the context of the show than they are as stand-alone songs — I wasn’t that familiar with the original musical, but wow, it’s good. Christine found some of the numbers a bit stagey and claustrophobic, but I really dug the musty intimacy of it all.

Set in and around a gloomy, beautifully dank Victorian London, the movie and the songs are as dark as can be. And while the ads make it look like quirky, Tim Burton-lite, this movie is one of the darkest things he’s done in a while.

I found the songs and humor to be funny as hell, but I should warn the uninitiated that this “Sweeney Todd” is not for the feint of heart.

Anchoring the movie and proving once again that he can do almost anything onscreen, the always-astonishing Johnny Depp rocks in his first full-blown musical. Ditto for “Borat’s” Sasha Baron Cohen (as Depp’s hysterically oily rival, Pirelli), Alan Rickman as the villainous Judge Turpin, and the incredible little boy who plays Toby (newcomer Ed Sanders).

But fans of the musical know that the dark heart of the show has always been that wily scene-stealer, Mrs. Lovett.

I read somewhere that Stephen Soundheim loved her character so much that he actually demanded (and got!) final approval for the casting of Mrs. Lovett. And though Helena Bonham Carter wasn’t the best singer he auditioned, she was by far the best actress. And lemme tell ya, Soundheim was right. Helena Bonham Carter is spectacular in the role.

I’ve been a huge fan since I first saw her in “A Room With A View” and Carter has continued to amaze me ever since. If you haven’t seen her in “Fight Club” you haven’t lived. Not only did she blow Brad Pitt and Ed Norton off the screen, but her twisted, manic performance as Marla Singer is one of the great screen characters of the 1990’s. Really amazing stuff!

Here again, Ms. Carter — who gave birth Saturday to her second child, a daughter, with Tim Burton — rips into a really juicy part with a vengeance. And like her co-stars, I’m happy to report that Carter’s singing here is top notch. More traditionally Broadway-ish than Johnny Depp’s rock-infused vocals, Carter’s scrappy, Cockney-accented singing really steals the show.

And though the content of her “meat pies” would turn even my hearty stomach, I gotta say if Carter’s saucy Mrs. Lovett was selling them…I’d be the first in line!
