Si “Taxi Driver” fuese una comedia, quizás sería “Edmond”. En apariencia, las dos pelis van de lo mismo: del afán de sexo/comunicación de un hombre bueno perdido en la jungla urbana. Pero Stuart Gordon no es Scorsese, sino el director de “Re-Animator”. Así que este drama realista es también relato de terror. El terror del cuarentón confuso en su decadencia; el de quien confunde el subidón de adrenalina de la violencia/sexo con la revelación de su destino. Esto pasa mucho. A William H. Macy, en esta peli, tras acuchillar a un negrata y echarle un kiki a una camarera cariñosa. Hay que tener el talento de David Mamet para reproducir en la ficción la palabrería metafísica del hombre corriente, ésa que todos hemos practicado: para poner verosímilmente en boca de un necio los interrogantes manoseados sobre el sentido de la vida. Macy está genial en su perplejidad. Quería cambiar su vida, y lo consigue. Vaya que sí. Al final de la peli, se cuestiona sobre el infierno y besa a su amante, antes de acostarse a su lado, sin comprender que vivir es lo que ocurre, no lo que se medita.

Cat fights, murder, threesomes, and Bill Murray. Sounds like a winner to me.

Wild Things is about a studly High School guidance counselor in an upscale area of Florida that gets accused of raping one of his students who also happens to be the daughter of the wealthiest woman in town…who he’s also slept with. While trying to defend his innocence, he gets accused of raping another one of his students. As you might expect, his life gets turned upside-down, but nothing is as it seems when your dealing with…WILD THINGS!

Alright, so it might not be the best movie title (I can’t get that damn Tone Loc song out of my head now) and the only reason anyone’s probably seen this movie is because of the infamous threesome scene I alluded to, but believe it or not, all those other scenes you fast-forwarded through were actually worth watching. Who knew?

It had been a while since I’d seen this and it had been a while since I’d watched a whodunit of sorts, but thanks to a suggestion by my good buddy Fred, I’m glad I gave it another shot.

So, the script here has its pros and cons. For one, it’s pretty sharp and is filled with solid twists and turns right up to the very end. Being that I could never write a script like this, it gets many a point in that regard. The characters are also pretty good, the only problem is that their dialogue isn’t all that great. With the exception of Bill Murray, everyone seems like they’re just kinda going through the motions with their lines, and for the most part that’s the writer’s fault. You’d think a hot and heavy movie like this that’s backed up by a pretty well-known cast and set to a score by George Clinton (one of the coolest men alive) would have some pretty smooth dialogue to go along with it, but alas, beggars can’t be choosers.

And I’ll just get it out of the way before every paragraph starts to inevitably lead back to this statement like it always does – Bill Murray’s got the best role in the movie is Matt Dillon’s ambulance chasing attorney, party because he’s got the best dialogue, partly because there’s no one better to get as your comic relief, and partly because…well, he’s Bill Murray. One of those characters that you wish was in the movie more because everyone else is just so damn serious. Lighten up, guys.

Naturally, everyone else isn’t as memorable as good ol’ B.M., but they’re still pretty good. Except for Matt Dillon. He’s not very good here. He really hams it up as the guidance counselor, but I think some of that has to with the fact that he’ll always be Healy to me.

I can’t think of anything else Denise Richards has done with her career outside of her role here as the Matt Dillon’s student/rape accuser, her Bond girl stint as Christmas Jones (really?) in The World is Not Enough, and a god-awful reality TV show on E!, but something tells me she’s gonna have a pretty hard time making people forget about this one. Call it a hunch. Doesn’t have a whole lot to do with her acting abilities, but that’s just what happens when you show your boobs to the everyone on Earth.

Trust me, I know.

Kevin Bacon is also good as the cop investigating Matt Dillon’s case. Typical Kevin Bacon performance. Gets the job done and gets it done well, but that’s to be expected when you have the ultimate last name.

And Neve Campbell is pretty good as the second girl that accuses Matt Dillon of having his way with her, even though she’ll always be Sidney Prescott ’til the day she dies. A lot of good development going on with her character, probably should throw some credit to the screenwriter on this one, too.

Okay, enough about the acting, I’m rambling. The point is that I was surprised that this movie was actually good and it’s too bad that it’s only remembered for “that scene” – despite how nuts that scene may be. It gets a little slow at times, but all the plot twists and saucy liaisons kept me entertained from beginning to end. 

Just one more great reason not to screw your students. Believe you me, teachers, it ain’t worth it.

Personally, I would prefer an indie girl as I don’t like my gir l to look tougher than me, so the metal chick can be my best buddy with benefits(*wink). An indie girl would make a good girlfriend as she would have a relatively good taste in music, and so I can talk to her all day about music without getting bored. She would then send me a compilation CD she mixed herself with great indie tracks in it for me to listen to it all day. I would too return the love by creating a personal CD mix  for her, and this way we can express our love for each other through music. How romantic.

Although most of us have to contend with a less than perfect body, we are still entitled to wearing whatever bikini we are comfortable in.  There are a variety of styles to accommodate our body shapes and sizes from the skimpy micro bikinis to the full coverage camkini or tankini bikinis. 

We don’t have to look like a model to wear a bikini.  However, I thought it would be interesting to note some of the celebrities and models in theirs.  Let’s have a look at 27 beautiful women who have all made a name for themselves in one way or another and reveal some skin in their bikinis.  They appear in alphabetical order with birth date and brief entry about how they made it into stardom.

8. Gisele Bundchen was born July 20, 1980.  Her interest in modelling began at the age of 13.  She is now the highest paid model world wide and was entered in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the richest supermodel.  That is quite an accomplishment. 

9. Elisha Cuthbert was born in Calgary Alberta (a neighbouring province – yah) November 30, 1982 and started her television career in 1996 with Are You Afraid of the Dark.  Absolutely love her bikini. 

10. Cameron Diaz, born August 30, 1972, was active in the fashion model industry beginning in 1988 at the age of 16.  Her body sizzles. 

11. Katherine Heigl was born November 24, 1978 and began her acting career in 1992.  At the age of 9, she was a child model and has since appeared in many different magazines.  Sensual and seductive – very nice. 

12. Kathy Ireland was born March 20, 1963. Her modelling career began at the age of 17 and was featured yearly in the Swimsuit Issue until 1996.  Very beautiful woman.

She appeared on Television in 2002 and in the film industry in 2003 but became most popular with the series Lost in 2004.  She too could use a tan and a bikini style that would camouflage her boyish figure. 

17. Lindsay Lohan, born July 2, 1986, started as a child fashion model at the age of 3 and began making television appearances at the age of 10. She also decided to branch into the music industry and released her first album in 2004. 

18. Christina Milian was born September 26, 1981 also known as Christine Flores.  She made her public debut through commercials at the age of 9.  In 2002, her musical talents were revealed and in 1996 began making appearances in the film industry.  She is a hot looking lady.

24. Nicolette Sheridan was born November 21, 1963.  Her acting career launched in 1984 but wasn’t really noticed until 1986 for her role in Knots Landing.  I totally love her character in Desparate Housewives.  Looks great at the age of 45. 

25. Britney Spears was born December 2, 1981 and is most commonly known throughout the music industry.  She debuted on Star Search in 1992 but didn’t release her first single until 1998. She was also seen in the film industry as early as 1991. 

26. Charlize Theron, born August 7, 1975, made her way into modelling at the age of 16 which evolved into a career in acting in 1995.  She could use a bikini that gives her a little more volume on top to balance out her petite figure. 

27. Laura Vandervoort was born in Toronto, Ontario September 22, 1984.  Her acting career began at the age of 13.  She has appeared in several commercials and became more popular in the film industry in 1997.  Her bikini choice looks great for her body size and shape.

Those wickedly soulful blaxpolitation of the 1970s are re-examined and given a sort of “Austin Powers” makeover with the film “Undercover Brother”. But did this brother lose his soul in the transition.

“Undercover Brother” stars Eddie Griffin (Double Take) as the film’s title character. UB teams up with a covert government agency known as the B.R.O.T.H.E.R.H.O.O.D to stop a criminal mastermind known as “The Man”. UB is joined by Sistah Girl (Aunjanue Ellis) on the mission as he must all resist the powers of “The Man’s” greatest secret weapon, White She Devil (Denise Richards). The mastermind’s lead henchman is Mr. Feather (Chris Kattan) who is sent to stop General Boutwell (Billy Dee Williams) who is running for President.

“Undercover Brother” begins as a comedy which absorbs, loves and utilizes its subject matter. The old-style opening sequence reminded me of those cheesy opening credits for TV series like “Starsky and Hutch”. I liked the UB’s apartment and his huge 70s Caddie. I liked how UB watches “blaxpolitation” films and emulates them.

The film jumps around a lot as it tries desperately to lay out a plot for the film to follow. By the time we are introduced to Denise Richards it begins to show signs of caving in.

Eventually the film wears out its welcome after about forty minutes which is a shame since it has a running time of barely an hour and thirty minutes.

The central character of UB isn’t the greatest character and the world around him should directly support such an offbeat character to make it funny.

It isn’t enough to create a character trapped in a genre but you have to have a reason for him being there and create a universe for him to thrive in. Like how the first “Austin Powers” did with that film’s title character when they used time travel and cryogenics.

I would have liked to have seen this film set and taken place during the “blaxpolitation” era and then developed the storyline. Make fun of the genre directly instead of setting it today where UB seems so out of place.

This film thrives on stereotypes and probably isn’t the greatest or most politically correct film to be showcased. The stereotypes are “tongue-in-cheek” and blown way out of proportion but I liked that it took risks and dared to push the comedic racial envelope. I did withdraw when it fell away from the subject matter that inspired it. It’s bold to be different but watch it could come back to bite you.

Drop Dead Gorgeous is still as funny and irrepressibly dry as the first time I saw it, even in spite of its existence within the very, very much overdone mockumentary genre. These days, outside of the odd Christopher Guest film (Best in Show, A Mighty Wind et al), this is one of the few mockumentaries that I can actually bear to watch.

Inadvertently, it was also the second film starring Amy Adams that I had seen that day. In fact, Drop Dead Gorgeous was something of a star factory for young female talent, boasting the likes of Kirsten Dunst, Denise Richards, Amy Adams and Brittany Murphy. Okay, so they’re not the Hepburns, but still…

Today’s post is on vainglory. I’d like to specifically address how vainglory manifests itself in our culture.

Perhaps where we can find vainglory most present is in celebrities. Not celebrities in general, but those who strive for the spotlight at any cost. These individuals would rather shame themselves than not be talked about. Such folk feed on the attention (negative or positive) of critics and fans.

While most celebrities do not fall into this category, there are others who, out of the spotlight, make comebacks through their own reality TV series. One such case is Denise Richards, whose infidelity and seduction allowed her to launch her own show chronicling her self-made drama.

What drives this dogged pursuit of the spotlight? Is it the inability to face oneself? A lack of contentment? Why is it necessary to put destroy one’s family life and the allow others to watch the aftermath of your actions?

While vainglory can be annoying (see Franklin’s attempt s at virtue), isolating (the vainglorious individual can’t recognize true love), it can also be destructive. Vainglory can not only ruin one’s own soul, but devastate others for the sake of attention.

Rather than pursue a virtuous life (where the side-effects of virtue could result in honor or respect), the vainglorious individual pursues attention in and of itself, and will stop at nothing to get it. This could look like continually directing the conversation towards oneself, or creating catastrophes in order to gain another’s attention by force.

What is needed is love. What is needed is for the individual to cease striving and face oneself. What is needed is an encounter with Divine Love

Sweet revenge, terrified co-eds, and a masked stalker. Sound familiar? To me it sounds like almost every slasher film made to this date. Valentine is pretty much cut from the same cloth.

Twenty-something groupies Paige (Denise Richards), Kate (Marley Shelton), Dorothy (Jessica Capshaw) and Lily (Jessica Cauffiel) have been friends since before the sixth grade. But when one of their classmates ends up murdered it seems to be linked to the girls and their past. You see back in the sixth grade they humiliated a struggling boy named Jeremy Milton. For the past thirteen years they have laughed and grinned at the very thought of young Jeremy. Now it seems that he could be the very link to their eventual demise. Poor, poor girls.

Valentine is basically your everyday run of the mill slasher horror film with Hollywood finding more ways to kill beautiful voluptuous co-eds. The only real difference here is that these girls don’t live in the same sorority. But putting the obvious aside it does on some level work. It has a beginning, middle and an end that follow the plot. There are some tension scenes that will delight fans of Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th films) and Michael Myers (of Halloween fame). And we also have some beautiful young stars to dream about.

I guess we could chalk this one up for the kids. I mean it’s set right up for them. We have a cast of hunks and starlets. Some brought to us from nighttime soaps and others from popular films. You have hunk David Boreanaz (of TV’s Angel) as Adam, Kate’s struggling alcoholic boyfriend; Katherine Heigl (TV’s Roswell) as a terrified med-student and Daniel Cosgrove (TV’s Beverly Hills 90210) as Dorothy’s not-so-wholesome boyfriend, Campbell.

Before stating the obvious flaws that are quite plentiful in Valentine, I would like to mention a couple standout performances and some interesting camera work. I really like that Hollywood is giving actress Marley Shelton more leading roles. I think this girl does have oodles of talent when she is teamed up with an equally talented cast. It’s really a shame her on-screen love interest was like oil to her water. Her on-screen man in this film is David Boreanaz who can’t seem to shake his brooding Angel persona.

The other stand-out was Richards, who is such a tease and the only one on-screen who seems to be in touch with their sexuality. She sizzles here. She could have wiped the floor with this Cupid Slasher if the script would have allowed it.

Finally I come to the interesting camerawork. Director Jamie Blanks, who also directed Urban Legend, does some interesting camera work. With the grizzly Urban Legend he did find interesting and dark ways to kill people and in Valentine his journey continues. In his latest entry, there are some scenes I liked a lot visually. The sex-art-show was a head-scratcher but fascinating. The opening morgue scene was also shot really nicely. Because Blanks didn’t shy away from gruesome violence he will surprise some theatre goers on how the victim will perish.

As I write this review I begin to reflect back on this film and it was hard to pinpoint anything really new that was brought to the slasher genre. I mean it had a masked stalker (this time with a Cupid mask), a cliffhanger ending which begs sequel, beautiful victims, some real unlikable characters and a terror wrenching opening scene. The only thing I thought was different was that the bad guy dies way to easy. It’s like they pulled the plug and said yep he’s dead. Another point I don’t get is how come it took 4 writers to put this thing together. I mean how hard is it to write a slasher flick?

What made me cringe most of all is that this film was oozing sexuality but the chemistry on screen never sizzled. It was like watching a junior high school prom where all the girls are along one wall and the boys along another. I mean when Shelton and Boreanaz smooched like Boreanaz was kissing a fifteen year old girl. It was a little disturbing. Then you have Cosgrove and Capshaw who seem to be to caught up in their character to really acknowledge the fact that they are supposed to have lust for each other. It’s a shame we really needed some friction and romance to make this film really work.
