Sunshine and I both love to read. In college we spent hours browsing for new books at Borders. Now that we live on opposite ends of the country, we still find books that we know the other will like. (Books can be expensive to mail unless you remember to use Media Mail!)

Sunshine’s latest recommendation was The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe. I just finished it, and it was phenomenal. It’s the kind of book you don’t want to end. I’ve come to realize I really enjoy historical fiction. This one uses the witches of Salem as its central theme. It bounces back between the past and the present to solve a mystery. In that regard it reminded me so much of one of my favorite books, The Virgin Blue by Tracy Chevalier. (I liked it a thousand times more than Girl With a Pearl Earring, which is good, too.) I can’t understand why the bookseller at Barnes and Noble told me she had a hard time getting into it, and she had to put it down several times because it was boring. I love Barnes and Noble, but obviously my friends know me better – I’ll take Sunshine’s recommendations any day!

So I guess next I should read Julie and Julia which Sunshine sent to me before she knew it was going to be a movie. She’s a literary savant!

Suddenly I’m missing the X-Files marathons I used to watch on Thanksgiving Day. Twelve hours of Mulder, Scully, the Cigarette Smoking Man and the paranormal. I would tilt the TV on the shelf so I could see it from the dining room table where I set up all my scrapbook stuff. Then I spent all day scrapping and watching X-Files. The first year I made eight pages, and I’m pretty sure I made as many the next year. It was my own little Thanksgiving tradition.

For those of you left wondering about what happened to Little Denise, here is an update. Under the care of Zorka and Susie, Little Denise grew up into an intelligent, pretty child.

With traits like ‘Genius’ and ‘Computer Whiz’, she was a straight-A student who never left her homework late. Her favorite pastimes included practicing chess, playing computer games and looking through the telescope.

She also got along with her stepmom very well. Her father Don had practically been absent from her life. Susie was the only parent apart from Zorka whom she cared for. They loved each other a lot.

The two of them played intense chess matches against each other.

And the small family enjoyed regular fire-pit nights. (I’m still not sure why Susie preferred to wear her sleepwear almost all day long when at home.)

A pretty happy childhood Denise had, don’t you think?

Veripelto Mina, Denise Like, 2008 Skotlantilaisen Denise Minan dekkareiden teemoja ovat mm. naisiin

Veripelto
Mina, Denise
Like, 2008

Skotlantilaisen Denise Minan dekkareiden teemoja ovat mm. naisiin kohdistuva väkivalta, lasten seksuaalinen hyväksikäyttö, perhedynamiikka, sosiaalinen epätasa-arvo ja syrjäytyminen. Rankkojen aiheiden lisäksi kirjojen miljöö Glasgow on rähjäinen ja sateinen, eivätkä ”sankarittaretkaan” ole perinteisiä kaunottaria, tai edes yksiselitteisen hyviä ihmisiä vaan tavallisia kuolevaisia, jotka vaihtelevalla menestyksellä yrittävät selvitä ”elämästä hengissä”.

Denise Minan dekkariuran aloittaneen nk. Glasgow-trilogian (Garnethill, Pako ja Päätös) tapaan ”Veripellossakin” rikoksia selvittää nuori nainen. Kunnollisesta, työväenluokkaisesta katolilaisperheestä lähtöisin oleva Patricia ”Paddy” Meehan työskentelee lähettinä Scottish Daily News -sanomalehden toimituksessa. Toimittajan työstä haaveileva, kunnianhimoinen Paddy kiinnostuu rikoksesta, jossa kahta poikaa syytetään pienen lapsen raa´asta murhasta.

Fiktiivisen toimittaja-Paddyn tarinan rinnalla kulkee omituinen tosikertomus pikkurikollisen Patrick ”Paddy” Meehanin (1928-1994) elämästä.

Veripelto on ensimmäinen viidestä Paddy Meehan-sarjan dekkarista, kakkososa Suden hetki on ilmestynyt tänä vuonna.

I had to take my car to the dealer for inspection and to fix the electric window that wouldn’t

I had to take my car to the dealer for inspection and to fix the electric window that wouldn’t go up. Oh yeah, and to find why the Maintenance Required light kept flashing. Since it was an all-day affaur, my mom met me to drop my car off the night before (causing major stress about the broken window), drove me to work the next morning, and then took me to pick up the car after school.

When we got to the dealer, there weren’t a lot of places to park. My mom tried to get near the Service Department door, but at the last minute we saw there were none so she turned sharply into a spot to park. The car next to her was on the white line so it was kinda close. The girl in said car was blabbing on the phone and checking herself out in the visor mirror. So when she saw us, she looked back in a real exagerrated way to make sure we hadn’t hit her and then flipped up her mirror. We just stared at her. So my mild-mannered mother beeped her horn and made the same exasperated “What?” kind of hand gestures as the girl had. She gave us a nasty look and rolled her eyes, so my mom backed up and parked way over into the next spot on purpose so the girl wouldn’t hit her car whenever she decided to get out.

We went inside to get my car, and when we came back out, the girl was out of her car talking to two people. I got my bag out of my mom’s car, and then the girl said something to my mom about how she parked. (Because the people she was talking to had parked on the other side and had no room.) My mom was like, “Excuse me? I had to do it because of how YOU parked.”

And the bitch started laughing. I guess she was dropping off her car because she got in the other car and left. We stood there and stared them down to make sure they didn’t hit my mom’s car. Then I was just so annoyed; she was just so high and mighty stuck on herself, she needed to be taken down a peg.

So, I decided to write her a note. I was inspired by Sunshine’s “Mental handicaps don’t count” note for an able-bodied bimbo who parked in a handicapped spot sans sticker or hang-tag. I said, “Take a break from the phone, Princess. Then maybe you won’t get brain cancer. (If you have one.)” When I put it on her windshield I saw she had NJ inspection stickers so I added, “Go back to New Jersey.” Hopefully the guys working on her car leave the note there!

Let me tell you something about yours truly.. After I got my heart broken by my first serious boyfri

Let me tell you something about yours truly..

After I got my heart broken by my first serious boyfriend almost four years ago, I promised myself that I will never let any guy take control of me. It was an abusive relationship which lasted one and a half years. It wasn’t until I finally learned to fight back when I knew it was time to let go.

A few months after that break-up, another guy courted me. I never really liked him that much, and I was kind of a b**ch to him. But my friends supported him and told me that he truly loves me. So I answered him and we were together for almost four months. That’s because I had to move to Manila.

Months later, one of my best friends and I had a bet to see if I could last two whole years of being single. And I did. I won the bet last August 2009 and to my surprise, I was able to be single for over two years.

It wasn’t until June when I met this guy. Instantly, I knew we had a connection. To be honest, I was never the type of girl who wanted to settle down and raise a family. In fact, I have even announced to my dad that he should not expect any grandkids from me because I’m not planning on giving him one.

But with this guy, it was different. For a brief moment, I wanted to get married to him and settle down with him. Grow old with him as we would watch our kids mature as well. For that time being, I was able to do things that normally, I am incapable of.

Even if you asked me, I would never, ever go to a hospital with you for a check up if we just started to date. I am also never the type of girl who would wash the dishes since I don’t even do that at home! Needless to say, I even washed some plates which smelled of sour milk. [not a good smell, people!]. I would not even for one minute, allow myself to spoil a guy for one bit. Not at all.

But with this guy, everything seemed to change. I was beginning to change. I was able to know the real me and what I am capable of. Although I know I can write, it was because of him that I discovered that the real me just plainly wants to write for a living. And I have never been this happy in my life. It seems I had everything– my own career, a new dog, and him. Even though we were “undefined,” I felt or rather always convinced myself that he was beginning to feel the same way with me.

But later on, when I started to introduce him to the people who were closest to me, he started becoming a, well… a jerk. He would be rude to them and would even not answer back when one of my girlfriends were talking to him. This hurt me. But my friends knew he was making me happy, so they did not contradict me. Plus it may be because I had warned them not to ask me if I think he’s worth it because that would only end up to us fighting. Bringing him home to meet my dad didn’t help either. It would be wrong for me to say this, but I have never seen my dad so upset at me. Even though the issue sort of just riddled away, I still cannot look my dad in the eye. I would like to say I’m sorry to my dad but I cannot open my heart to do it. Until now, all I would really like to do is just to embrace my dad so hard and admit to him that I had been wrong.

Five months later, this guy suddenly just told me “hindi tayo bagay.” [For my overseas friends, it means “we're not compatible.”] For obvious reasons, that thought had also been running through my head the past few weeks we were together. But unlike him, I kept fighting it off to prove that even though we weren’t, we could still make it work, just like we used to.

I knew we weren’t compatible simply by looking at our interests: he likes to be in crowded places while I prefer to stay away from them, he likes to keep working even though that meant sacrificing our “time” together while I would just patiently sit until he would have time for me, he didn’t also like to go to the places where I usually frequent because “they’re too sosyal” [expensive places]. There are many more which I simply can’t discuss. But even through all this, I kept finding ways to make us work, if he would not give up.

But he did.

And now, with just those words “hindi tayo bagay” [again, “we're not compatible], they keep crushing me. There truly is no other word for it. I have been crushed and devastated. And even if the end has already happened, I am still sometimes hoping I would get a YM or text from him saying he misses me. But I know that will never happen.

So I put on my brave mask and strongly tell my best friends that it’s over. My best friends keep asking me how I am. But I answer them not to ask me that question because it only breaks me down. Even so, I cannot fully answer the simple question, “how are you?” Except this: I feel like I died and part of me is still dying.

I know. I will get over it. It will soon fade. And believe me, after the makeover yesterday, I kind of feel much better [new hair, new hair!]. I am finding more time to spend with my best friends, the people who will never ever ever leave me. I am finding more time for myself to grow and learn [will finally be able to get that photography lesson and maybe even another foreign language]. In addition, I have finally gotten an idea on a new blog [welcome to riseofthepantyhose] and more fashion inspired [want to throw out my old clothes and go for a serious shopping spree]. Luckily, I have also been blessed by given the opportunity of meeting new clients everyday. Ever since the split, I have been receiving emails everyday on new projects. Truly, they are something that can take my mind off the plate.

To be honest, it still hurts everytime a memoir of him manages to creep into my thoughts. When I am driving the car or even in public, I have to wear sunglasses because I never know when my tears will start falling. I have sleepless nights where I just keep tossing and turning as I avoid any thoughts of him. And when I finally manage to sleep, he is constantly the leading man in my dreams. When I wake up and I touch my eyes, they are still wet from tears that have fallen while I slumber.

I know it will all end.. someday.

Angel (through SMS Nov. 18 11:23 pm): “You expected too much from him and the relationship, bigger hurt. But you’ll survive it trix. Your friends are here for you and always will be.”

Jason (new client who found me through my blogs): “Sorry to hear about your break up with your boyfriend. I’m sure the right guy will come along!”

Would like to thank: Angel, Cristel, Mimi, Denise, Christina, Tricia, Jake, Bubot, Ronnie, David Ross (though he doesn’t have any idea why), Josef, my family (they too don’t know why), and to the other people who are excusing me from being a bi*ch lately.

Although there were many exceptions, the majority of the groups that specialized in the type of close-harmony singing known as doo-wop fell into two categories. The earliest was the R&B-inspired music that mostly came out of the black urban environment, but close on its heels was the sound of the Italian-American groups, mostly originating in the big Eastern cities. Randy and the Rainbows was just such a group, and their hit “Denise” is still one of the most familiar songs from the era.

Randy and the Rainbows was a quintet that originated in the Queens section of New York, and was formed by two sets of brothers joined by another singing pal. By the early Sixties brothers Frank and Dominick “Randy” Safuto had already bounced around the New York music scene for a while, as had Mike and Sal Zero. When the four got together and added Ken Arcipowski to the mix, they began to call themselves Randy and the Rainbows, and it wasn’t long before they were able to make it into a recording studio.

In 1963 they recorded a song written by Neil Levenson, one that was inspired by a friend of his (who actually spelled her name Denice) and that would later become “Denis,” a minor hit for Blondie. But as “Denise,” performed by Randy and the Rainbows, the song would have its biggest success, becoming a Top Ten hit.

Although the group would continue to record after their big hit, and would sell some records with the similar-sounding “Why Do Kids Grow Up” (video below), Randy and The Rainbows would never reach the level of their one big song. But through the years the band has come together a number of times and in various configurations, and its members have had some success on the Oldies circuit. Additionally, both Randy Safuto and Mike Zero maintain websites dedicated to their group and its glory days.

I absolutely <3 my 2 week old Nokia E75! Ever since it first came out in May, I initially knew I wanted to have it. Come six months later, I finally own one! And perfect timing indeed. Since it’s out with the old and in with the new, having a new phone tops the list. Among many others, of course. But even though there are some things which surely can never replace that special person, having these things makes life more manageable and easier to get by every day:

1. Makeover!- I had this yesterday as I waited for my family to finish watching the Pacquiao Vs. Cotto game. For the first time in my whole life, I got red acrylics on my fingers. I never did this since I thought they would make me look like a prostitute. Lol! But to my surprise, they were actually nice on me.

2. New Earrings!- One of my trademark characteristics is having three piercings on the right ear and two on the left. But since I was at school, I was not allowed to wear earrings. So now, I bought new earrings and I am still looking for somewhere I can have the third one pierced again [it closed already ]

3. Go Shopping- Unless you don’t have much money yet, you can opt for window shopping instead. Oh! Did you know there is an uuuubber cute jacket in Warehouse, Greenbelt 5. Angel and I are planning to buy it.. Well one of us is anyway since it costs P5,000+.

4. Eat Out- Had dinner with Angel at Kitchen.

5. Aren’t your friends the best? When I told my friends the news, they all consoled with me instead of telling me “I told you so.” And for that, I thank them so muuuucch! Love you girls: Angel, Cristel, Trish, Mimi, Denise, Chris [oh Chrissy, will tell you when we do have that inuman na].

6. Plan a Christmas Vacation with your friends- Girls, let’s go to Lago de Oro. Wakeboard tayo! Sometime this December before you all leave me alone for Christmas. Hell, I can even spend money for that guy why can’t I spend it on people who truly care for me?! Let’s go girls!!

At times I disagree with Sir Aaron and sometimes I totally agree:

Who are you both? And who are the “guys.” The only person arguing in favor of Keller, was John. (I am really having to use all my willpower to avoid snarky comments).

Based on your last two posts (and a visit to your blog), I gather that your points are: (1) Keller is a feminist because he allows women to perform functions that men who are not leaders perform including some teaching. (2) Women shouldn’t teach men under any circumstances. (3) Women can and do have the gift of discernment.

My response to you is the following:

(1) With respect to Keller being a feminist, I disagree, as would most feminists. Keller’s view hardly fit into the classical definition of a feminist. I do get your point, and I agree that Keller’s doctrine with respect to this issue is flawed. My problem here is that you throw around terms like feminist very loosely.

(2). We agree absolutely that women shouldn’t be teaching men.

(3) You clearly believe that women can’t teach men but yet can have the gift of discernment. “And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.” This implies that one reason why Paul says women can’t teach men is because they lack discernment or at the very least are more easily prone to being led astray. So I agree with you that women shouldn’t be teaching men. We have no argument there. I’m not particulary convinced that women can have the gift of discernment. However, I’m willing to entertain a case for or against such a position.

Finally, the biggest concern that I have is that I don’t see how what you are doing is much different than teaching men, especially since you routinely challenge men, including pastors and elders, to doctrinal disputes. How is teaching men or challenging them over the internet via your blog or elsewhere, any different than doing so at your local church body? What male leader has endorsed your positions or holds you accountable for your what you write? What male leader has qualified you to lead in this area and confirmed your giftedness in discernment?

For the record, I strongly believe that Denise of Surph’s Side blog does not have the gift of discernment but she does have the gift of gossip. However, the gift of gossip is something all women have so it doesn’t appear to be all that special of a gift.

Originally posted on “True Faith Defender” and it is one of the most read postings on that blog. It was a bit off topic for “True Faith Defender” since Denise is more a blind parrot of John MacArthur than Robert Morey. She does occasionally post on Biblical Thought blog mostly to get traffic from that blog to her Surph’s Side blog as best as I can figure out.

Modest Dress

Being tired of Denise of Surph’s Side blog making a big deal of how undressed Carrie Prejean is in her eyes. How much clothing does Carrie Prejean have to wear before she becomes modest? Denise doesn’t define anywhere that I am aware of what is Biblical Thought Modest Woman Clothing. It times I detect that Denise is drifting into the legalism of Islam and any moment I expect to read that Denise has decided to return to Mecca.

Modest Dress 2

All we know is that immodest dress appears in the eyes of Denise to be whatever Carrie Prejean appears to be wearing or not wearing at the moment. Denise’s desire to gossip about Carrie Prejean’s clothing or lack of clothing as if somehow the future of Christianity depends upon Carrie Prejean’s clothing taste is a bit difficult to understand.

Modest Dress 3

As far as Arab dress that Denise would approve as it is assumed she is headed into the faith of Islam on her personal journey to Mecca by expert spiritual discernment monitors who detect Islam growing in her mind because of her obsession with modest clothing. It is assumed that the above clothing would be considered modest. The following photo would be considered not modest in the eyes of Denise of Surph’s Side blog

Hello, lovelies!

It’s that time of year again. The Sewing Studio is gearing up for the holidays! And what better way to celebrate than to share our joy and warm spirits with others?

This year, we’ve decided to take part in Operation Christmas Child, an organization that sends personalized holiday gifts to deserving children around the world.

How can you help? Fill a box with treasures!

- Come by The Sewing Studio’s Summerhill location (1225 Yonge Street)
- Pick up a special Operation Christmas Child shoe box* (there are instructions and specifics inside each box)
- Fill the box at home with goodies for a deserving child
- Bring the box back to The Sewing Studio before 6pm on November 18th

*Please note, each box requires a $7 donation, which Operation Christmas Child uses to pay for the delivery of the box to other countries.

The Sewing Studio’s hours for pick-up and drop-off are:
Sundays and Wednesdays from 2-6pm until November 18th.

While you’re picking up or dropping off your box for Operation Christmas Child, or if you’re looking for another way to share joy around the world, bring in new or used (but washed, of course) T-shirts for our second charity mission to West Africa. We’re collecting T-shirts again to give to village children in the country of Ghana. Collection boxes will be at all locations of The Sewing Studio until the end of January. Last year, we collected 177 shirts in only 2 weeks. This year we’re aiming to collect over 2000 in 3 months! Help us warm a child’s heart.

Much love!

Finaliste Maxime in BNTM Maandagavond, Benelux Next Top Model tijd.

Finaliste Maxime in BNTM

Maandagavond, Benelux Next Top Model tijd.
