An insightful video here made by FAMU psychology professors Sharon and Dana Dennard in 2007 about the roots of hazing. Their guest is scholar Dr. William Jones, who identifies hazing as a form of oppression among members that ultimately undermines the cohesiveness of organizations.

It’s also worth noting, the participants here tell some powerful personal hazing stories. Dr. Jones talks about being hazed while pledging Alpha Phi Alpha in the 1950s. Dr. Dana Dennard mentions how he mustered the courage as an undergrad to say no to being hazed — and thus passed up joining a frat — despite family pressure to become a member.

Hat tip to FAMU alum Brooke Hobbs for calling this item to the blog’s attention!
