This rivalry, or whatever u callit, got a little too silly in the end for my liking. I still maintain that the so-called revenge is better executed without threats or promises…done quietly, a good spin sends the message just fine.

Boy, NASCAR made the right decision to move the year-end ceremonies out of New York City to the west

Boy, NASCAR made the right decision to move the year-end ceremonies out of New York City to the west coast, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Not that the Big Apple didn’t live up to expectations. It was glamorous all right, with the awards presentation in the elegant Waldorf-Astoria. But something was lacking that Vegas has provided thus far in Champions Week.

The week has included the Jimmie Johnson Roast. The top-ten drivers in points all got a chance to poke some fun at four-time champ Jimmie Johnson. While some made fun of Jimmie’s hair and personality (“Four-in-a-row…wow, I bet you wish you could do that with your wife” -Ryan Newman) (“The only thing faster than Jimmie’s car is his receding hairline” -Denny Hamlin), some used a few four-letter words that can’t be repeated here. It just goes to show how the real personalities and humor of these drivers aren’t afraid to step over the line, instead of the vanilla we usually see. So, while the glamour and black-tie events of New York are gone, the crazy and let-loose atmosphere of Vegas is here!

In fact, NASCAR has made a few pretty good decisions recently. Let’s see, double file restarts, earlier start times, the Nationwide series Car Of Tomorrow, to name a few. And, with the economy the way it is now, any good news is welcome news.

In the spirit of the holiday, and because I think it would be a good thing right now, here is my “Thankful List.”

In no particular order, except for the first few, I am thankful for:

God

Because He’s awesome and life is way too hard without Him. There is so much more to this one, but I’m going to leave it at this, it seems like a pretty fair summation right now.

My family-

Lily

Because he’s awesome (yes, this will probably be my reason for everything on this list), I love him with all my heart, and he makes life interesting.

Amanda (of the CA variety)

Because she’s awesome. She gets a special mention because when I was in a rotten mood the last time I posted, I ended the night by talking with her into the wee small hours of the morning and, as is so often the case, she gave my mood a tremendous lift.

Kristen

Because (say it with me now) she’s awesome. Because I know whenever I need someone to talk to, she’s there. Because she has been there for me for so long.

Melissa

I may have once described her as “an awesome little bit of crazy and big bit of fun,” and that totally still applies. Let’s face it, she’s awesome. Having Bible study with her and just having her there to talk with has been great these past few weeks. And on that note…

Amanda (of the VA variety) and Allie

My other Bible study compadres. And they’re awesome. I’m really glad I get to spend time with them and just have the chance to talk and hang out for a little while. It’s great.

My other friends

Who are too numerous to name individually. But they are all awesome.

My roommates-

I have really enjoyed my interactions with everyone.

And I know there are a ton of other things that belong on this list, but this is a pretty good start. By the way, pencils are awesome (Ha! You thought I forgot, didn’t you?).

Mientras, Juan Pablo Montoya había vuelto a pista.

1º – (—) Jimmie Johnson: 6652
2º – (—) Mark Martin: 6511

(Photo: Peter Andrew Bosch / Miami Herald Staff)

With the conclusion of the Ford 400 today at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Florida, Jimmie Johnson created a page of his own in the NASCAR record books. Four consecutive Sprint Cup championships. With the advent of the Chase playoff system, Jimmie has played the system to perfection, capping off the decade by destroying and pulling away from the rest of the field in his two latest triumphs. The dominance the 48 team has shown in the last few years has been breathtaking. 47 career wins since his rookie season in 2002, four championships in eight years…this man has been rightly named “Superman”.

With a 108-point lead ahead of teammate Mark Martin coming into the day, all Jimmie had to do was finish 25th or better to clinch. Starting on pole, he led the first lap to gain five bonus points, meaning a 27th-place finish would suffice to clinch. The Lowes team played it cool all race long, with the exception of a few tense moments when Clint Bowyer wasn’t giving him much room to pass, irritating Johnson enough to complain about Bowyer.

Jimmie cruised to a fifth-place finish, ahead of Mark, who finished 12th, to land 141 points ahead and with the Cup in hand, celebrated into the night.

Denny Hamlin won his personal-best fourth race of the year at Homestead, which leap-frogged him to fifth in the final year-end standings. Him and the #11 FedEx team have shown in the last third of the year that they are the team looking to upset Jimmie’s championship winning streak, as they have consistently been able to run with the 48 team. If not for some bad racing luck in the Chase, Denny might have been the one celebrating a title tonight.

While the magnitude hasn’t quite yet set in, the historic implications of this event will be the standard all drivers will strive for. Jimmie has set the bar very high, and it ranks up there with some of the best marks: a record seven titles only two men have achieved, an untouchable 200 career wins, seven Daytona 500 victories…the list goes on.

The most interesting story of the night aside from the historic achievement was Tony Stewart and Juan Pablo Montoya’s set of run-ins. Running side-by-side on lap 116, Stewart forced Montoya down the track on the backstretch, which cut Juan’s tire and sent him into the wall. After making repairs in the garage, Juan got a shot at Tony about 50 laps later, punting him out of the way on the frontstretch, relegating Stewart to a 22nd-place finish, and ultimately finishing sixth in points, while Juan finished 38th in the race and eighth in points.

- Jeff Gordon started 20th and made some progress early, and stayed rather constant throughout the race. He ended up sixth, one position behind Jimmie, and ended up 3rd in the points overall, 179 markers behind Johnson. The season has been a frustrating one, as Jeff recorded only one win (Texas in April), and one pole (Texas in November), but he was very consistent all year.

The problem with Jeff is that he isn’t the young superstar racer he used to be. Marriage and a baby girl have really stunted his growth in the win column. He’s become the cool, savvy veteran like the drivers he used to race against as a young adult. This lack of aggressiveness has cost him on the track, especially with the introduction of double-file restarts. He doesn’t take chances, and it is that quality that produced only one win in 2009, and zero wins last year.

Finally, the climax of the long NASCAR season and the end of the Chase for the Sprint Cup. It was all there for Jimmie Johnson to take – or all there to lose. But it was really down to him which way this was going, because he was too far ahead of his rivals for them to be able to do anything about it alone.

Of course, Johnson’s been in this situation before: three times in the last three seasons. He knows how to hold his nerve and bring home the title. And 2009 was to be no different.

Johnson used his pole position to quickly secure the five bonus points for leading the first lap, but pretty soon came under pressure from Marcos Ambrose who was hungry to take the position for himself. He did so on lap 10, but it was a short lived triumph: three laps later and the 47 snapped sideways for a second. Ambrose held on magnificently but the tail end of the car hit the wall, cutting the right rear tyre and forcing Ambrose into the pits and a lap down; he was soon back in the pits for a longer stop with battery/electrical problems playing havoc. The running repairs would put him 15 laps off the lead, and after such a promising start his day was effectively done.

Tony Stewart and Kevin Harvick had meanwhile got past Mark Martin – who was struggling with his handling in the corners – to take up the second and third spots, Scott Speed (who had qualified second) having dropped like a brick from the get-go and who was soon circulating outside the top twenty. Stewart caught Johnson on lap 33 and passed him for the lead, but the long green flag opening stint was giving Mark Martin a much harder time: he was overtaken for 4th by Clint Bowyer on lap 38, and then by Ryan Newman and Kurt Busch before lap 50.

Just as Jimmie Johnson was getting caught up in lapped traffic and getting caught by Harvick and Bowyer, it was time for the first round of green flag pit stops. After the stops the running order on lap 55 was Bowyer vying with Harvick for the lead, followed by Stewart, Martin and Johnson, with Dale Earnhardt Jr. up to sixth after being one of the fastest cars on track despite running high and skimming along the wall for a heart-stopping moment.

Tony Stewart emerged in the lead on lap 63, and the race had passed the hundred mile mark when the first yellow came out on lap 81 (for a harmless spin by Marcos Ambrose at the back of the field.) That gave everyone the chance for their first yellow flag pit stop, and the top three came back out in the same order – Stewart, Harvick, Bowyer – while Martin jumped Johnson for fourth, and Kurt Busch gained four places to reach 6th spot after losing a bunch of places during the first round of pit stops under green.

That meant it was time for the first ever double file restart at Homestead, and it went badly for Stewart who went high and dropped to 6th place within a couple of laps: Harvick took up the lead just holding off Bowyer.

The light was fading and the track cooling, accounting for some of the fluctuations in fortunes: on the rise was Juan Pablo Montoya who stormed into second place on lap 91 despite being under the weather and having received IV fluids overnight to keep him going, while Jeff Burton was now surging into the top three. But Jeff Gordon was going backwards and feared a flat tyre, and Johnson, Bowyer and Martin were soon losing places and falling back to the tail end of the top ten.

The teams would have welcomed a chance to tackle their handling issues with the rapid appearance of the second caution of the day on lap 101, triggered by John Andretti hitting the wall and then having his right front tyre explode as a result, showering debris on the track and shredding he 34’s bodywork. Harvick maintained the lead ahead of Burton but Montoya dropped four places to 6th, while Carl Edwards vaulted up multiple places with a two-tyre gambit to restart in 8th. That was ill-advised, however, and he was relieved by a rapid third caution (for a long slide against the wall by the ill-starred Ambrose) which allowed him to come back into the pits for a full set after all, which put him back down in 20th.

After the restart, Harvick came under pressure from Denny Hamlin who had been having a great race after qualifying in a dismal 38th place. But again the green flag was short lived, with Juan Montoya running into the back of Tony Stewart on lap 115 leaving the 42 with major front bodywork damage; Stewart then retaliated and made sure Montoya had a trip to the wall, which left the 42 with a blown tyre that brought out the fourth yellow of the day. They just to add to the confusion, a sudden compression of cars running in the pit lane seemingly triggered by Erik Darnell which then saw Elliott Sadler slamming into the rear of Reed Sorenson in a multiple five-car chain-reaction slow-speed accident that also caught out Paul Menard and Michael Waltrip and forced NASCAR to close pit lane to sort out the problem, in particular Sadler’s disabled and motionless car.

Many cars stayed out this time: Jimmie Johnson was the highest-placed car to pit, and when the situation in pit lane sorted itself out he ended up facing the restart in a dangerous 23rd spot. The good news for Johnson was that at least Martin had been similarly caught out and was still two spots behind him and Tony Stewart was even further back, restarting in 32nd. The championship still looked entirely in hand.

So at the restart it was Harvick, Hamlin, Burton and the two Busch boys, Kurt and Kyle, making up the top five. Johnson was able to start picking his way back up the field, slowly and deliberately without taking any risks, followed by Stewart; but Mark Martin wasn’t able to go with them and remained mired in the mid twenties, struggling at times to save the car from some very loose handling and spectacular sideways slides.

Kurt Busch took the lead from Harvick for the first time today on lap 134 as the race hit the midway point and transitioned into a true night time floodlit affair. Harvick was to lose even more positions at the next pit stop on lap 156 which took place under yellow after the Stewart/Montoya grudge match flared up again: Montoya was determined to pay back Stewart and ploughed into the back of the 14, tapping Stewart into a spin that sent him down the track on the infield and light contact with the inside wall. Unsurprisingly, Montoya – already 28 laps down – got black flagged for two laps for dangerous driving and told that if he did it again, his season was done. And Kasey Kahne also got a memento of the moment, when a piece of brake duct sheered off the 42 in the collision and flew across the track to dent the top of the number 9.

This put Hamlin in front for the first time today ahead of Kurt Busch for the restart, then Jeff Burton, Kasey Kahne and Jeff Gordon, with Jimmie Johnson back in 10th and Mark Martin in 14th. Busch pulled off a neat move to reclaim the lead on lap 181 as Hamlin started to fade in the longer run, Jeff Burton also taking second spot away from him three laps later. Kyle Busch was now threatening in fourth, but more significantly Jimmie Johnson was back in the top five after the mid race hiccup.

Just when green flag pit stops loomed, a sixth caution came out – Robby Gordon lost the car to a spin and ended up lightly hitting the wall. Denny Hamlin’s crew proved the cream of the crop at the subsequent round of pit stops and got their man out in front, while Kurt Busch dropped to 4th behind Jeff Burton and brother Kyle. Jimmie Johnson’s crew once again opted for slow-but-sure, dropping to 9th place by making extra sure every lug nut was in place. With 72 laps still to run, it was too far to make it without one final pit stop.

At the restart, Hamlin lost the lead to Jeff Burton and the Busch brothers also stormed past, Kyle for second spot and Kurt for third. Jimmie Johnson got into an uncomfortable three-wide battle with Jeff Gordon and Martin Truex Jr. for sixth, and with so many cars still on the lead lap he had to be mindful that a wreck at this point could still lose him the title – even though Martin would have to do much better than his current 15th place.

Debris on the track on lap 216 gave the field the opportunity to come in for that final pit stop under yellow; Kurt Busch emerged in the lead, but he did so by opting to take only two tyres; given Carl Edwards’ mid-race experience with that tactic had been quickly re-thought, this seemed at the very least a brave move, and more likely a kamikaze one for the blue deuce. Kurt was ahead of his brother Kyle, with Hamlin, Burton, Bowyer and Harvick forming the rest of the top six.

Sure enough, the strange two-tyre gambit meant that Kurt fell off the lead almost at once, leaving Kyle and Denny Hamlin battling for the top spot which the 11 car finally won on lap 223. Johnson was safe enough battling Jeff Gordon for 7th, while Mark Martin was still stuck in 15th having failed even to win the bonus points for leading a lap today. The Chase was winding down, and the room for a shock ending was rapidly diminishing.

Somewhat against expectation, the race ran all the way to the chequered without further incident or caution. The longer run ill-suited Kyle Busch who started to fall back and ended up 8th; by contrast, Kurt Busch stabilised after the two-tyre gambit and ended up a strong 4th just ahead of Jimmie Johnson in 5th and Jeff Gordon in 6th. Jeff Burton had an impressive late burst of speed, but by this point Denny Hamlin had built up such a strong lead that there was no reeling him in and he won the Ford 400 for his fourth victory of the season.

But of course the real story and spotlight was on the 48: the first driver in history to win four consecutive titles; it was also the first time a pit chief in the form of Chad Knaus had achieved the feat, and a similar first for Rick Henrick in becoming the first owner to pull off a 1-2-3 in the final Cup standings (a real shame then that a family medical emergency had called him away from Miami on the night.)

It was a moment of motor sport history richly deserving of the fireworks that broke out in the Miami night sky. The Sprint Cup was over for another year: and Jimmie Johnson was once more the best of them.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t congratulate my second favorite driver, Kyle Busch, on winning the Nationwide championship yesterday.

All he had to do was show up to clinch it, but he also won the race. The last time that happened was 1983 when Sam Ard did it.

Carl Edwards made it close http://www.nascar.com/video/busch/2009/11/21/nns.hom.high.final.nascar/index.html but in the end, Kyle beat him in an entertaining last couple of laps.

The real drama came from the on-going feud between Denny Hamlin and Brad Keselowksi. Last week in Phoenix, after Keselowksi spun Hamlin, Hamlin promised he’d get even with him. This week at Homestead, Hamlin made good on his promise and spun Keselowksi on Lap 35.

After the race, Keselowksi told a reporter that Hamlin “has a lot of problems on and off the racetrack” and didn’t think Hamlin would feel good about the spin. When told of Keselowksi’s comments, Hamlin laughed and said he felt pretty good about it and that it was worth it. He added ominously, “The weekend ain’t over, either.”

Even though Jimmie Johnson’s fourth Sprint Cup championship is all but assured today, the drama between Hamlin and Keselowski might be worth tuning in to the potential snooze fest.

Congrats to Kyle and his team!

Watching the Nationwide Series race today it was sort of funny in how the 88 car of Brad Kezoleski and the 20 Car of Denny “Howdy Doody” Hamlin found each other.

On the last restart, the 20 car runs in and hammers the 88 car in the left rear getting in the corner, well, then the 88 come roaring back to return the favor, the 20 didn’t recover as good as the 88 did and spun. What got me though was the announcers were going on and on about how the 88 car was wrong and the 20 did nothing wrong, watching replay after replay of the turn where the 88 got into the 20, then after a few minutes the crew in the truck showed the contact that started it with the 20 getting into the 88 then they started back stepping.

It was funny to watch, they really need to get some decent announcers, I could be available if needed to fill in but it would not be able to conflict with my radio show …man, I sure miss Benny Parsons……..

Although after the race Kez admited he was returning the favor he said “it has been over as far as I am concerned but it’s not with him(Hamlin)” It seems that Hamlin had a different view, he laughed when told that Kez said that he (hamlin) started it on the restart, he siad “ I could sit here and give you 20 seconds of sound bites but I am just going to wait ,I am glad I signed up to race next weekend at homestead I will deal with it then, there are lots of guys who owe him and I am going to be the first one at the pay window to collect from him” Now that is a direct threat as I see it and this is the sort of thing that needs to be dealt with before they get to the track if not this coming race could be a crash fest and someone could get hurt.

Carl Edward sure had a rocket today and Kyle Busch who spun all by himself could not find his way, by his own admission, he said” I am so lost out here” .Seems kind of hard to do on an oval….. but it is Kyle Busch.

Carl went on to win the race and lead the most laps, but now it seems that all Kyle Busch has to do is show up and start the race and he clinches the title.

I hate to say it but A tip of the dr’s hat to the 18 car he has been really stong all year and he deserves the title after the year he has had. (now will my jinx work??)

Ok lets get ready for the race tomorrow, and hope that somehow Johnson don’t have a good finish.

"Rattlesnake Hill" is a perfect place to view the racing at Phoenix. Looking ahead to Phoe

"Rattlesnake Hill" is a perfect place to view the racing at Phoenix.

Looking ahead to Phoenix Int. Raceway this week, we finally have championship battle on our hands! Jimmie Johnson crashed just three laps into the race at Texas last Sunday, and Mark Martin finished fourth to land just 73 points behind Jimmie. The big story at Phoenix will be whether Mark can cut into Johnson’s lead even more, or if Johnson can put a cap on this year’s title. Both drivers have been exceptional at the 1-mile flat oval in recent races. Johnson has won three of the past four races at the track, while Martin dominated from the pole to win there this past spring to break Jimmie’s winning streak.

What do I think? I think both drivers will be up in the top-ten and top-five, but Mark will probably come out of this deal about 40 to 50 points behind Jimmie heading into championship weekend at Homestead. That means Jimmie will finish only a few spots behind Mark in the race. Mark can win it, but who is the driver that will most likely keep Mark from winning it?

Denny Hamlin is the man when it comes to Phoenix. In fact, he is the man when it comes to flat tracks in general. You name it, he can win it. Phoenix, Richmond, Martinsville, Loudon, Indianapolis. Although he’s never won in the Valley of the Sun, he needs to be considered in your fantasy lineup. In races at Phoenix with the COT (Car Of Tomorrow) chassis, his average finish is 6.6. Pretty hefty.

Jimmie Johnson boasts a pretty number, too. In 12 starts at Phoenix, Johnson’s average finish is 5.4, with three wins. Compare that to Mark’s average finish of 9.0 in 25 races, and we have a fight on our hands.

- If Jeff Gordon can qualify good, he can run good. Jeff has been very hit-or-miss at Phoenix, with one win, eight top-fives and 15 top-tens in 21 starts. His average start of 8.7 is tops among Chase drivers. But he has also had days where that team is just off the board, speed-wise. If Jeff wants to be a part of the championship fight at Homestead with Mark and Jimmie, he needs to gain maximum points at Phoenix.

Joey’s pick to win: Denny Hamlin, who is stout on flat tracks, as I previously mentioned. Hamlin, who has been very inconsistent in the Chase, finished second last week at Texas. Now he needs a win.

For the first time in his career, Jeff Gordon was worried he would go a season without winning a pole….

Scratch that off his list. Jeff turned a lap of 191.11 mph (28.25 sec.) today at Texas Motor Speedway to win his first pole this year. He was the only driver to go above 191 mph as well, as outside pole winner Kasey Kahne was clocked at 190.97 mph. This is also the third consecutive front-row start for Gordon at Texas.

Mark Martin, the closest competitor to Jimmie Johnson, starts seventh, while Johnson himself qualified 12th.

Most Chase drivers qualified well as Denny Hamlin and “Flyin’ Ryan” Newman ended up 25th and 26th on the board, respectively. Non-Chaser Kyle Busch, who is going for four consecutive wins at Texas in the Nationwide series on Saturday, will start fifth on Sunday.

Brad Keselowski will get a jump-start on next year, as this weekend will be the first race for him in the #12 Alltel Dodge, driving for Penske Racing, qualifying 35th. Brad is replacing David Stremme, who, along with teammate Sam Hornish Jr., has been nothing but a wrecking ball this season. I hate to talk smack about Stremme, but at least Hornish has a few top-10s.

15. T.J. Majors (tjmajors): 2,403 – Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s spotter gains two spots, which won’t sit well with No. 16 on this list
22. Landon Cassill (Landoncassill): 1,462 – Maintains his position after first start of the year, still lots of followers for a guy with no ride
24. Joe Nemechek (FrontRowJoe87): 1,085 – New to the list but is high up because he follows so many people
25. Aric Almirola (Aric_almirola): 1,034 – Almost got a big boost in exposure with Talladega truck race
26. Colin Braun (Colinbraun): 894 – Puzzling why Braun doesn’t have more followers. He’ll be in the Nationwide Series next year
27. Marc Davis (Nascarmdavis): 797 – Going to class for now, still trying to make it as a driver
28. Mike Calinoff (MikeCalinoff): 556 – Matt Kenseth’s spotter tweeted pics of his new tattoo
32. Chris Lambert (3widemiddle): 260 – New to the list, Lambert is the spotter for Brian Vickers
34. Jeffrey Earnhardt (SlickEarnhardt): 149 – Shouldn’t take long to get followers once people hear an Earnhardt is tweeting
35. T.J. Bell (Racingwithtj): 126 – Twitter account for the Truck series driver needs more followers to stay on the list

The Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship kicks off with the first of its ten-race schedule in Loudon New Hampshire this weekend
12 drivers fight for a Championship; other teams fight for survival
By Briana Buzali
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is racing at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, N.H. this weekend. The race is scheduled for Sunday, September 20th, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. with driver introductions beginning at 1:30 p.m. After last weekends race in Richmond, 12 drivers secured a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship and the Sylvania 300 at Loudon is the first of the ten-race schedule
This year’s field of Chase contenders is more diverse than ever with veteran driver Mark Martin leading the pack and first time Chase contender Juan Pablo Montoya showing great improvement. The only team to have all its teams in the Chase is Stewart-HASS Racing with drivers Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman both locked securely in the top 12 in points. Drivers Denny Hamlin, Kasey Kahne, Brian Vickers, Juan Pablo Montoya and Kurt Busch are all the only drivers from the respective teams, so the pressure to win the chase lies solely on them.
Although only 12 drivers are in the running for the Chase, there are 43 cars competing this weekend in New Hampshire. Tommy Baldwin Racing is a small first year team competing every weekend to prove to potential sponsors that they will do whatever it takes to one day have a shot at being a contender for the Sprint Cup Championship. Remember to tune into ABC at 2 p.m. on Sunday to catch the first of what should prove to be an exciting final 10 races to determine a 2009 Sprint Cup Series Champion.
