    It’s about time I get around to this, it’s been nearly a year since I was there for the first time. I have noticed a lot of people searching for ‘wind cave’ and ‘wind cave map’, and coming across this blog, so I will do what would only be decent, and post a map of this fantastic and fairly safe cave.

    It was February 19th of 2011 when I went in search of this cave…well, actually it was February 18th, but we started too late in the day and didn’t make it down here in time, so I went back the following day to locate it alone. I have made one subsequent trip since, on June 9th, with Michelle and our friend Tom. Like a gleeful little boy, I proudly introduced my sweet girl and my old pal Tom to this wonderful dark earthen place. I would call it a sanctuary, but since the ‘kids’ find, litter, and paint the walls, …..yea…not so much the sanctuary as I would like. I don’t understand it for the life of me. I have never felt the need to spray paint walls, not even in my youth. It just looks hideous. But then hey….perhaps I have a bit of sense. Or my parents raised me correctly, not sure which.

    At any rate, this is still a great trip underground into a ‘wild’ cave. And as far as I am concerned, quite safe also. There really isn’t any place to get yourself turned around and lost in here. The whole of it is basically shaped like an upper case ‘I’. There are, however, over a thousand feet of passages, and something for everyone in here. In fact, there may be more undiscovered cave in there that we have yet to find, at least as far as the General Geology Report from 1974 goes. I have seen portions that I haven’t attempted yet, that are not yet mapped, so it just may be possible, and at one time a fella blasted open a section (prior to the Geology report mentioned) and found more cave, so who knows what is out there for the CAREFUL explorer! I stress CAREFUL! If you do not know what you are doing, stick to the simple routes that everyone follows and just be happy you are there to experience it. A good many caves in Pennsylvania have been blown shut, or gated due to people getting lost or hurt. Do not ruin this for the rest of us. Know your abilities and stick to them until you are better prepared. End of lecture son. :-)

    As you walk into this cave, you don’t even need to stoop. So if you have someone in your party who is a little leery, but still curious, this person will feel comfortable for at least the first 50 feet or so. If you don’t mind climbing, there is a bit of that as you head straight in, and past the right hand connection to the rest of the cave. In fact, this section, straight into the cave, winds up around to your right, then you can come back to your starting point by following around and under the passage you took in. Pretty neat.

    Venturing off to the right at the previously mentioned connection, will take you down a fairly long section that forces you to stoop a bit, but still no crawling needed. At the end of this section is some breakdown (caver speak for chunks of rock or dirt that have fallen from above) that you will need to climb over. This will lose some of your party also if they are not fully into this, but again, they had an experience in the ‘wild’ without risking their safety or comfort level. For the rest of us….well.

    Climb over this boulder, and drop down to the lower portion of the upper case ‘I’. In here you will find the best parts of the cave I believe, and the parts that all of my pics are from with the exception of the entrance and the map itself. There are very tall areas, as seen in my pictures, and some very low ones, that will require crawling. There are some sections that haven’t been surveyed, possibly because they cannot be gotten into, but I don’t know that for sure as I haven’t tried to get into them either. One is a slide that sort of disappears to God knows where. I would love to get a better look into this drop off, but not without ropes.

    Directions to the hike. Oh, I didn’t mention? This is a pretty steep hike, so be in decent shape, or simply take your time.

    Get yourself to approximately 618 Bridge Valley Road, Pequea PA. If you google search this, and zoom in on the map to street level, you will see a black car and a white pickup truck parked on the other side of the road on a small pull off spot. Park responsibly, as these two did. You should be able to get three cars in this location at least, and they left room for the third. You can also see them walking the direction you want to travel to the hike, which I will bet is where they were headed.

    Once parked, there is a trailhead with an orange diagonal double blaze. Follow this trail across a creek and down a access road to the rail road. Watch carefully for the trail leading up the hill on the left. Follow the trail up the hill and check out the amazing views of the river. At the end of the trail you will arrive at the Wind Cave.

    Now, since you may have no cave experience at all, here is the absolute basic of basics that you MUST do if you are to go in here. Take at least 3 sources of light. If one goes out, or you drop them in water, you need backup or you are alone in the dark for who knows how long. There are other things to take that are a good idea (like a helmet) but at least take more than one light source. Absolute minimum. And don’t go alone (says the guy who goes alone quite often on everything he does).

    Have fun, but be careful, as always, use your head.

    Last night I attended the 7th annual Williamsport Crosscutters Hot Stove Banquet & Auction.  For the past seven years, the Crosscutters have been bringing in all types of colorful guests to entertain fans while at the same time raising money for a good cause.  This year the guest lineup included Denny McLain, Tom O’Malley, Justin De Fratus, and other members of the baseball community.  Good food, great stories, cool memorabilia, all in the middle of a snow storm.

    Denny McLain is the last pitcher to win 30 games in a single season.  In 1968, he went 31-6.  I highly doubt this will ever happen again.  Listening to his stories about Mickey Mantle and Ted Williams were very fun.  McLain even mentioned that he is in talks to do a potential reality T.V. show.  Given his interesting history, it would probably make for some fun T.V.  Perhaps he and Pete Rose could do a crossover episode.

    ]]>         <![CDATA[Through a Psychoanalytic Lens]]> http://twangc.wordpress.com/2013/01/19/through-a-psychoanalytic-lens/ Sat, 19 Jan 2013 03:46:17 +0000 twangc http://twangc.wordpress.com/2013/01/19/through-a-psychoanalytic-lens/ brain image creativeWhile reading through my summative novel, The Art of Racing in the Rain, I’ve noticed that many of the characters have acted strangely or questionably, which drove me to wonder what could be going on inside their minds.  Which is why I’ve decided to analyze the novel through a psychoanalytical lens; to shed some light on some of the characters’ thought processes.

    Firstly, I’ve noticed Enzo has always been strangely fond of Denny, even since the time they first met.  Despite the fact that Denny’s relationship of Enzo borders on the relationship between father and son, I still think that Enzo took to Denny a little too quickly, especially seeing how his previous owner didn’t even pay for anesthetic for the cutting of his dew claw.  I think the reason for this is because while on the farm where he was born, Enzo didn’t receive much special attention.  There were many other pups just like him, rarely giving him the time for special attention.  It is in the nature of everyone, human or dog, Stop-Barking-Dogto want to be the center of attention, so when Denny chose Enzo as his pet, Enzo acted on his ego and tried to be as appealing as possible in order to stay at the center of attention.  When Eve showed up in Denny’s life, Enzo felt that he was being pushed out of the center of Denny’s attention and therefore resented her.  Though not stated in the book, I think that Enzo might have even acted on his id and decide to attack her, however his superego would probably have held him back.

    phoenixwright-objectionSecondly, after Eve’s death, her parents, or as Enzo calls them, the “Twins”, wanted to adopt their granddaughter, Zoe.  Naturally, Denny disagreed, wanting to raise Zoe himself.  Although they mean well, I couldn’t help wondering if this is what the Twins wanted all along;  for Denny to disagree.  Think about it.  The Twins’ daughter had just died, leaving them distraught and grief-stricken.  To vent some of this grief, the Twins, (not so much Eve’s mother, who was held back by her superego) decided to act on their id and emotionally attack Denny by stealing his daughter, using their wealth to their advantage.  This urge is made stronger by the Twins’ belief that Denny wasn’t a good husband for Eve, which they think contributed to her death.  After Denny defeats them in court, the Twins are forced to relinquish Zoe, however it is never said whether they’ve gotten over the death of their daughter or their resentment of Denny.

    Akc-logoAccording to the American Kennel Club (AKC) (http://www.akc.org/public_education/responsible_dog_owner.cfm), the main responsibilities of a good dog owner include keeping the dog safe, healthy, and trained, as well as being committed and a good friend.  In the novel, Denny absolutely adores his dog, Enzo.  At the first sign of any injury or illness, Denny immediately takes Enzo to the vet, proving his loving concern for Enzo’s well-being and safety.  Every time Enzo “does his business” in the house, Denny doesn’t hesitate to clean it up, and even goes out of his way to make a dog flap for him leading to the garden, showing his commitment and love for Enzo.  Finally, Denny, even though he thinks Enzo can’t understand, talks to him as if he were another human, which proves his powerful bond with Enzo as, not only an owner, but also a friend.

    In addition, the AKC also states that a responsible dog owner should choose a dog suited to his or her lifestyle in order dog playing catchto  maintain the best relationship possible.  Just as Denny has to remain fit and athletic to maintain his career as a race car driver, Enzo is also very energetic and active.  This is illustrated by the fact that the two often take walks and play fetch together. Furthermore, possibly through his relationship with Denny, Enzo displays a strong interest in [watching] race car driving and watching TV, allowing the pair to bond more closely over common interests.

    In conclusion, I think that Denny is the very image of a perfect dog owner, proven by his fulfillment of almost every responsibility stated by the AKC.

    I must be hurting this morning, I had to make the mad dash to Denny’s on Broadway for number two, (Op’s to much information) and anyway they were giving me the evil eye while I’m running in to the washroom.  (Not such good idea, baring my track record of refusing me the washroom).  Anyway I did make it down to the Office for my morning Breakfast, which I have so generously posted for your enjoyment.

Most make a decent breakfast , but when it comes to lunch and dinner the choices are limited.

    A few years ago insisted we have breakfast at the  Black Bear Dinner in Vacaville where he ordered Chicken Fried Steak for all us.  The platter and the portions were large, the service was good.

    Next visit was at the Black Bear in Tulare, Ca .  The crowded restaurant was clean.     The eyes or window to the restaurant are the restrooms. It’s often the first place I visit before being seated. An unkempt restroom( most are very small) could be  the  indicator  for the rest of the restaurant.   On this visit I ordered the Pot Roast and my companion ordered BBQ Pork Ribs and the Tri Tip Combo.     The Pot Roast was excellent, the potato and the veggie weren’t overcooked. the Roast was flavorful.        The Pork Ribs  were okay as were the Tri Tips.  Service was very good.

    In Sacramento, we ordered the Meat Loaf and the Chicken Pot Pie, the meat loaf was very good and the Pot Pie was excellent.

    The portions at Black Bear are very large.  If you have an ordinary appetite you might consider the small portion menu.

    Add Black Bear Diner to your short list if your craving Good Old Fashion Comfort Food.   Black Bear Diners are located in California, Oregon,Nevada, Washington,Arizona there in one location in Colorado Springs.

    In Sacramento, the address is 2700 El Centro Road ( Off West El Camino and I-80-Near the Fairfield Inn Hotel)

    ]]>         <![CDATA[You Think That's Funny?]]> http://theliterarybell.wordpress.com/2013/01/12/you-think-thats-funny/ Sat, 12 Jan 2013 21:22:46 +0000 ryanabell http://theliterarybell.wordpress.com/2013/01/12/you-think-thats-funny/ comedytitle01The Art of Racing in the Rain is a tragic comedy.  It is tragic for many reasons.  You could say death, suffering, unfairness, sympathy and many many more.  Now, the reason why it is a comedy is a bit less obvious.  The comedic aspects of the story all lie in the diction and the characters.  These are some things I find funny about the book.   

    Enzo, a dog, is the main character in the story.  This implies some sort of entertaining or comedic twist to the story from the beginning.  When Enzo is documenting human interactions or behaviour he makes the weirdest comments or deductions.  For example, when Eve and Denny are spending time together, Enzo says something along the lines them nuzzling, something a dog would do, never a human.  These basic or childlike observations do create some very funny scenes in the book.

    Another way the book provides a sense of comedic relief is the diction used.  Just like any book, words are everything.  The specific word choice in the novel make certain parts pretty funny.  For example, a one point Enzo is talking about how smart crows are and how they go for the food in  grocery bags that are left alone.  So one day, Eve leaves a grocery bag alone, and the crows take it.  However, in the bag instead of groceries, there are bags and bags of dog poop.  Enzo says he refuses to go out side because a “murder” of crows want to kill him.  Murder, in both senses, a group of crows and the actual act.

    crazy-dog-pictures-22Finally, the book is comedic because of Enzo himself.  He thinks he is so sophisticated and human-like that he thinks he is different from other dogs.  In fact, it is quite the opposite.  When Enzo is hiking with his family, he says that other dogs would be running around like maniac and that he is too good for that.  In the next paragraph, you see him running around like a maniac and jumping in the water.  This is something I could see my dog doing, he seems to fit the type of randomly changing attitudes, like Enzo.  Enzo is definitely the centre of comedic relief in the novel.
