Fortunato Depero

VIta dell’artista: Fortunato DEPERO

Fortunato Depero

Depero e Marinetti indossano i gilet futuristi realizzati dallo stesso Depero.

I’ve just taken delivery of a volume on the Futurist art of Depero. In a previous blog chapter

I’ve just taken delivery of a volume on the Futurist art of Depero. In a previous blog chapter I told of seeing a collage in the National Art Gallery in Rome in 1979; I remember the label describing the work’ as “collage of felt pieces”. My very good FB friend Elena Rossi identified the artist as Depero. The editor/biographer of Depero casually disdains to clarify D’s textile media; he talks of “tapestries”, at one stage he mentions D’s wife at her loom. Otherwise D is described as glueing pieces of felt onto canvas. The textile trajectory is seen as an extention of D’s interest in interior design. This explains two splendid patchworked waistcoats, which feature D’s energetic, highly coloured designs.

Hopefully somewhere in D’s oeuvre there are woven tapestries. The word is repeatedly used to describe his work. Is this because of the ubiquity of tapestry in Euro cultural life? A throwback to the fact that tapestry and painting were seen as sister art forms? For more on this, see my previous chapter.

But it is a contemporary quandary. At the RMIT, I sat with colleague exhibitors of the first Tamworth Textile Triennial. For once I was NOT exhibiting woven tapestry, while the person who wove tapestry and was incidentally exhibited next to my work Cresside Collette was giving a talk to her home town crowd. Also talking was Michelle Hamer, her work was a hand-stitced canvas image of street lights and billboards. Afterwards, we talked about the relevance of exact labels. She also referred to her work as tapestry in various contexts.

It reminds me that back in 1983 I was selected for the last Craft Australia Expo at Centrepoint, Sydney. The foldout catalogue for the event carried a small image, with the maker’s name and medium. The organiser was troubled when I simply used the word “tapestry” for my work; she thought it connoted canvas stitch work; however, she acquiesced. She proved prophetic as people swarmed in through the doors at 9 am sharp. I had a steady stream of visitors approach my work and manipulate it, examining minutely. Finally one person complained that he could not see the stitching. Clearly, my viewers were afficionados of canvas work.

Since then, post-modernism has better covered the ground of populist craft. This has been craftsperson driven, while curators seem reluctant and tardy. Unconventional and confrontational art means that perhaps it is too soon to assume that the relationship between various textile activities has somehow stabilised. For instance, a gallery director recently told me that the judging committee had been inclined to reject my button assemblage, which they considered ”outsider art”. All of this places great emphasis on the importance of the artist statement to clarify matters.

In 1979 I was travelling in Europe, arriving in Rome I managed to visit many art galleries. One day, I was walking through the beautiful gardens in front of the Villa Borghese when I stumbled into a puddle and managed to muddy most of my front. I was desperate: Romans are SO insistent on la bella figura, they are always well turned out. If I retraced my steps to my hotel there would be embarassing buses & trains full of people looking at my muddiness. I took a punt and walked up the steps of the art gallery, bought the ticket and went inside. Close to tears with mortification I asked the guard where the gabinetto was; he was SO gentle in his directions. I dashed inside & repaired the damage. Emerging & looking reasonably presentable I found myself in a hall full of amazing Futurist art. I had already worked as a tapestry weaver, so any textile art I might discover was of intense interest. Suddenly in front of me was a work constructed entirely of brightly coloured felt strips. My lovely, gentle Facebook friend Elena has suggested that this is the work I saw. Thank you so much Elena.

But what a complex work, so confident & full of verve. And pray examine the borders, they are constituted of complex textile designs. This is a moment in art that is intimately engaged with things textile. Depero is not just a painter reaching into the realm of novelty with a quaint new way of constructing an image. Fortunato Depero, Guerra-Festa, 1915.

Perhaps Depero’s success with textiles may be best explained by his work as a graphic designer, the discipline of working closely to a brief. Two other examples of Depero’s textile work are the following waistcoats.

This is based on an old advertisement by Fortunato Depero, a futurist artist who was active during the first few decades of the 20th century. I studied graphic design for two years before I changed my major to stupid English. I wanted to get into advertising, because I love the creative process behind simple but memorable symbols, like logos and stuff like that.

Anyways, I have a bunch of graphic design textbooks that I leaf through from time to time. When I see something that gives me an idea, I sit down and start sketching. That’s what happened here. If you see the design that I’m talking about by Depero, you’ll see that they are basically the same thing, but this is just something I did for fun. I’m trying to work on shading.

When you’re visiting Milan don’t just stop and stay in the center of the city. Campari opened a Galleria (love the sound of that word) in Sesto San Giovanni – only 30 minutes from the center. In here you will learn something about the history of the famous brand, but more important: they expose work from the coolest artists around. Like Depero whose work you can see on the image above.

Open on tuesday, thursday and friday. Check out: www.campari.com

You may think of Campari as just another delicious ingredient in some of your (and our) favorite cocktails.

But Campari (technically a “bitter” in the classification of spirits) is perhaps the world’s most literary and artistic beverage.

In fact, it was the official drink of the Italian futurist movement, the earliest phase of the 20th-century avant-garde, whose members sought to cast off the chains of the neoclassical and baroque styles of European art and literature.

Futurist artists like Fortunato Depero not only created ad campaigns for the famous bitter but they also incorporated Campari into their own works of art, like that above. The distinctive triangular design for bottled “Campari and Soda” was created by Depero himself and is still used today in Italy.

y sumar al diseño italiano una botella made in.

In the 1908 ‘Foundation and Manifesto of Futurism’, F.T. Marinetti wrote: “It is i

In the 1908 ‘Foundation and Manifesto of Futurism’, F.T. Marinetti wrote: “It is in Italy that we hurl this overthrowing and inflammatory declaration, with which we found Futurism, for we will free Italy from her numberless museums which cover her with countless cemeteries.”

The translation (by Joshua C.Taylor) may be a bit dodgy but the analogy between public art spaces and mausoleums is pretty plain. This makes it ironic that a plush new gallery in Forlì (in Emilia Romagna) should open its doors to the public with an exhibition of the works of two minor Futurist artists Fortunato Depero and Roberto Marcelli Baldessari.

Forlì is a small town in desperate need of cultural stimulus so I was happy to read of what the Dino Zoli Foundation describes as a “dynamic museum where visitors can enjoy a wide range of services: art, relax, music, reading and entertainment“.
It is situated on the second floor of a recently built complex with a Disney Store at ground level. It feels like you’re entering a high profile corporate office with automatic doors and movement sensitive lighting in the corridors and stairways. On a weekday mid-morning I was the only punter.
A brisk young man took my 6 euro and pointed me to the start of the exhibits. A female security guard tracked my movements through the gallery. I asked if I could take photos without a flash. She said I could not.
The exhibition sets paintings and collages by the two futurists as a compare and contrast exercise. Depero’s works are full of robotic figures which look pretty flat considering Futurism was meant to celebrate the movement and energy of a mechanized lifestyle. Baldessari’s works have a much warmer glow; but mostly look like they owe a lot more to Cubism rather than ,say, German Expressionism. Neither artist seemed to offer much in the way of challenge to me as a humble member of the public who the original Futurists claimed were mostly “warped by routine” and incapable of seeing with fresh eyes.
The Forlì gallery promises more exhibitions as a celebration of Marinetti’s centenary on 20th February 2009. Serious money has been invested in the space which also offers a book reference section with comfy armchairs. The exhibition has been well publicized with a striking poster but the owners need to make it more welcoming to the casual visitor if they are going to generate more custom. At the moment the experience is like going to a poorly attended conference in a 5 star hotel.
Almost a hundred of years have passed, but the Futurists’ depiction of museums as lifeless institutions is still too often a statement that rings true.
