FUNK FROM THE SKUNKSIDE

Matthew Kershaw talks to lead singer Aya Larkin about the band from
down-under who are soon to be up-over in the UK.

Skunkhour is probably not a name that familiar to Acid Jazz fans in
the this country, but in Australia they are top thirty material. Having
supported both Jamiroquai and Ice Cube live, they now have the UK and
Europe firmly in their sights.

> Can you give me a little of the history of Skunkhour?<
The brothers! Mike and Dean Sutherland (drummer and bassist respectively)
joined musical ambitions with Warwick Scott (guitar) in the rolling green
hills of New South Wales three and a half years ago. This threesome
meandered down to Sydney, where Del (my brother, the rhymer) and I saw
their first gig. I’ve known Michael sporadically for years, and this
invitation to jam live with them lead to Del and I supplanting said
vocalists. Ten months later keyboard whizzkid Paul Searles joined, and the
mongrel mix was complete. We’ve had a couple of convictions for petty
crimes on the numerous tours of this flat brown land, an album and two EP
releases, various attempted scams made upon us by foolish folk-all your
regular trials and tribulations. Now we’ve joined forces with Paul Cussen,
manager and Northern Queensland pit-bull, and we’re hitting other shores.

> How did you get interested in ‘Acid Jazz’ style music?<
We Skunks aren’t exactly sure what ‘Acid Jazz’ style music is, but groove
music has been integral in our upbringings. Mike and Dean’s father Ned is a
jazz and blues guitarist of note. Some of my earliest memories are of
reaching from my low vantage point to grab the cover of things like Blood,
Sweat and Tears album ‘Fresh’, or Credence Clearwater, Santana, Osibisa off
the cabinet in a darkened Saturday living room. My first experience of this
label’s catalogue was JTQ’s ‘Starsky and Hutch’ theme-truly huge!

>There seems to be a consensus amongst Australian journalists that
your music is too diverse to be pegged down by lists of influences and
such-like. We challenge you to list your influences.<
I can’t possibly list each of the six individuals’ influences, though I
know they stretch from many moons ago to the expansion of nineties culture
and consciousness. The roll-call of seventies/eighties funk; Sly and the
=46amily Stone, Gil Scott-Heron, The Meters, Parliament, Funkadelic, James
Brown, Rufus, The Brothers Johnson and Prince. The Beatles, The Jam, Ska
and Motown (Michael was a little rudeboy), The Specials, Madness, Bad
Manners, The British Beat. Remember the New Age Steppers, Selector, Body
Snatchers? Bob Marley continues to inspire everyday. Hip hop is in there;
Public Enemy, Run DMC, Jungle Brothers, NWA. Del’s soaked up Def Jef,
Q-Tip, Be-Bop jazz and more recently Freestyle Fellowship. Vocally, Van
Morrison, Tim Buckley, Marvin Gaye, John Lennon, Gil Scott Heron, Bob
Marley, Stevie Wonder, Bowie, Paul Weller and a hundred more. Not
forgetting Cheech and Chong, and slack dope-filled teenage years.

>How much is the scene in Australia dominated by
what is picked up from British labels, DJs and magazines?<
Moderately. Of course there’s a scene here that is largely anglophile.
British street style has long held a periodic sway because the bulk of the
world’s popular music obviously comes from the USA and the UK. However, a
cosmopolitan and individual community breathes somewhere under the impact
of overseas influence, cooking up its own Australian brew. The diversity is
here to be seen and heard.

>Jamiroquai’s first hit ‘When You Gonna Learn’ is famous for its
use of the didgeridoo. Do you incorporate any native Australian elements in
your music?<
Apart from clapping sticks we haven’t incorporated much in the way of
instruments. We’ve collaborated with Koori musicians on Skunkhour
recordings and continue to be aware of the lessons to be learnt by
embracing and integrating this central culture in this country and our
lives.

> You have said that you are diversifying away from the funk/rap
axis slightly, even incorporating bits of country music. This seems to be a
trend right across the board at the moment, from Galliano to Mother Earth.
Any ideas why this should be?<
Our country element is that slight flavour of easiness and good time you
might get from your country music. It’s not a change of direction for us,
just another component.

>You have supported both Jamiroquai and Ice Cube live. Out of all
the gigs you have ever done, which is the most memorable and why?<
We touch a few bases and consequently end up playing a wide variety of gigs
either on our own or in support slots. The floor of a first floor cafe/bar
collapsed under the weight of a bouncing crowd on its opening night while
we were playing. It was like ‘Uh….back up very slowly, everyone.’ We’ve
had a lot of good times and the feeling changes all the time with different
rewards from different moments.

>I know you intend to base yourself in the UK. Why?<
We want to play live in the countries we’re releasing in, and to bounce
back and forth from this beautiful far flung city to the UK and Europe
costs a bit too much for every gig, even being the incredible superstars we
are.

Skunkhour (JAZID LP/CD 113) is released July 24th.

PLAY IT AGAIN BEN

Kevin Braddock gets the Corduroy Classic five films from the man
who knows…

On the eve of the launch of the new Corduroy EP ‘Clockwork Man’, lead
groover Ben Addison found time in his busy schedule to recommend five films
to AJN fans – blag, borrow or steal, but don’t miss them!
1. Sweet Charity. Great songs, photography and one of the best
party/club scenes ever. Each choreographed dance is subtitled e.g. The
Aloof with their unforgettable ‘Rhythm Of Life’ with the Reverend Sammy
Davis Jnr. preaching his psychedelic message in a crowded underground car
park.
2. The President’s Analyst. In which James Coburn launched the
corduroy suit and is globally pursued for info on the US President. Coburn
hangs out in a wig and shades with a hippie group and plays a gong at gigs.
At one stage he meets The Pudlians, an English beat group who go around
selling acid. Great photography and story. Essential watching for Corduroy
fans wanting to emulate the style.
3. Bedazzled. Peter Cook plays the devil and brings cafe owner
Dudley Moore’s fantasies to life. Includes two TV pop appearances from
Eleanor Bron and Raquel Welch. Little time to breath between laughs. Under
no circumstances miss this one-cinematic excellence!
4. Thunderball. Connery at his best. Not too many gadgets and crap
jokes. Good plot, location and the lovely Claudine Auger (where is she
now?).
5. Pulp Fiction. This film picks you up by the throat, drags you
round the room and if you’re lucky, puts you down gently. The most exciting
film in a long time. What more can a man say?

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

GLOBAL VILLAGER
Things are gathering pace in the Mother Earth camp. Their new 4-track EP,
‘Free Thinker’ is released on July 17th. It includes three all-new Mother
Earth excursions as well as a cracking version of Curtis Mayfield’s soul
stomper ‘We’re A Winner’. Meanwhile, the release of Matt Deighton’s solo
album, ‘Villager’ was celebrated in style at The Blue Note. Greg Boraman
wouldn’t have missed it for the world.
To say the least, ‘Villager’ is a quality selection of first class
songwriting, and Thursday 25th May saw Matt and his funky folk group
previewing a selection of songs for an audience of friends, press and
liggers.
Once past the lamb, rabbit and baby goat tethered at the entrance to the
club (!), we were treated to highlights from the album, Matt being
accompanied only by acoustic bass and drums. The Face have described the
album as ‘the first truly post-Wild Wood album’, and for those of you who
have yet to know the other side of Matt Deighton you can expect to hear
some beautiful harmonic sounds. And, yes, it is folk music, but it’s
nonetheless funky and far removed from the ‘pipe and pie’ folk scene of
yesteryear.
The vibe on the night was as chilled as a freezer cabinet on overdrive-it
was quite something to hear so much sweet, mellow sounds made by just three
musicians. With waves of gorgeous noise bathing the appreciative audience,
the whole room was on a cool blissed-out vibe that was broken only by the
rapturous applause that followed each number. At the end of the set the
entire crowd rose to their feet in appreciation. Which says it all.
Villager is available now on Focus Records from all good record stores.

LETTERS
The MESSAGE
Dear AJN,
A quick word about something that happened last night=8A As a couple of DJs,
we were asked to play funk, jazz and rare in a wine bar in Ealing.
Busy-yes. Appreciated-no. Quote from the barman, ‘Shittest music I’ve ever
heard’. Five of the tunes played:
1. Funky Jam (Hot Ass Mix)-Primal Scream
2. Baby Don’t You Know-Bobbi Humphreys
3. Papa Don’t Take No Mess-James Brown
4. Tres-Os Championes
5. Cry-Money Mark
Our message to all real music lovers-it’s the bad nights that make the good
ones brilliant!
Yours,
Ribs and Spice

The Brum Beat
Dear AJN,
Congratulations to James Taylor and his gang for an absolutely storming
performance at Ronnie Scott’s in Brum recently. An interesting choice of
venue, but a big pity about the corpses devoid of emotion and life sat
right in front of the stage, ie right in the way of a sizeable posse of
punters unable to remain still to the funky sounds from his organ.
Top marks as well for such an enlightening article on Benjamin Zephaniah in
the last AJN – what a geezer!
With reference to the Remix Wrath letter of the same issue, it is indeed a
pity that the only successful British soul singers appear under the guise
of ‘accessible’ remixes, often in the handbag house line of things.
However, every type of music is just as valid as the next, and for me much
certainly depends on the time, place and my mood. Unfortunately, for many
people music is a tool to make a quick buck, which is the reason why so
many promising acts totally sell out and become virtually unrecognisable.
There is always going to be a a strong opposition between the mainstream
and the credible, but anyone with any nous knows that any jazz scene worth
its salt offers a completely different level of culture and emotion.
Get busy=8A keep Sweatin’!
Joe Herb,

Justice Dept. Seeks Action vs. Gay Discrimination

Gay March on Washington 10/11/09

Associated Press/Devlin Barrett—The Obama administration’s point man on civil rights said Wednesday he will seek to fight discrimination against gays, an area in which the Justice Department has had only a small role in the past.

Tom Perez, the assistant attorney general in charge of the department’s Civil Rights Division, said pending legislation in Congress will allow the department to attack discrimination against lesbian, gays, bisexuals and transgender people, a group often referred to by the acronym LGBT.

That would be new territory for the division that has historically gone after discrimination based on race, gender or religion. It would also be a major shift from the division’s work during the Bush administration, which opposed expansion of the federal hate crimes law to prosecute those who attack gays.

Tom Perez

Perez on Wednesday he gave his first speech to division employees, saying the division must be transformed “so that we are capable of tackling the civil rights challenges of the 21st century,” include issues not historically addressed by the department.

“We must fight for fairness and basic equality for our LGBT brothers and sisters who so frequently are being left in the shadows,” he said, and to “ensure that there’s a level playing field in which our LGBT brothers and sisters are judged by the content of their character.”

Allison Herwitt, legislative director for Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest gay rights group, called Perez’s words “fantastic.”

“What’s so different between this administration and the last is that we have people who want to have these protections in place and to enforce these protections, and you have the top of the Civil Rights Division willing to openly talk about these protections,” said Herwitt.

It isn’t often that I get to express my first amendment right to tell a former Vice President

It isn’t often that I get to express my first amendment right to tell a former Vice President that not only was he wrong and I was right, but that it works both ways. Today, I get to do just that and I believe it all comes down something called precedent. Maybe you have heard of it? In case you haven’t, it basically means establishing a principle or a rule for making future decisions. Still don’t understand? Let me break it down even further. Let’s call it “cause and effect”. The cause is firing Federal Prosecutors for not pushing partisan prosecutions coupled with selectively hiring career positions based on political affiliation at the Justice Department. The effect is the politicization of the Justice Department or, better yet, the politicization of justice itself.

There is a reason that the Justice Department hadn’t been politicized in the past. Not by a Republican, not by a Democrat — and all for the reasons you are complaining about now. You say that the probe of the CIA is political? For once, you may actually be right. Yeah, I can’t believe I said it either. However, where do you get the unmitigated gall to accuse the Obama Administration of politicizing the Justice Department? Sir, you and George W. Bush created a precedent when you fired those Federal Prosecutors. You let your successor, his successor, and their successor know it was okay to do so. You made it okay for politics to drive justice in this country. Let’s think about that for a minute. You enabled “justice” to become subject to the ruling political party of the day. In effect, you destroyed the very fabric of justice in this country; and, now you have the supreme arrogance to complain of it being done to you? Let’s be honest; if you live above the law, you lose the protection of it.

Mr. Cheney, where were you when President Bush and Karl Rove fired those Federal Prosecutors for not going after Democrats, even when there wasn’t evidence? The Justice Department should be an independent body where politics or any dividing characteristic hath no place. That is why Lady Justice has a blindfold on. I know you tried to have it removed while you were Vice President, but it’s still there. Sir, had you objected then, like I did, you would have a rock solid case. I agree that politics have no place when it comes to justice and that breaking the law is breaking the law. I don’t care if it is Joe Schmo or the President of the United States.

No matter what, thanks to you, we’ll never know if future Justice Department investigations are political in nature. Once you destroy the fabric of integrity, it’s gone and there is no getting it back. President Obama is, more than likely, taking advantage of the opening that YOU gave him. Well, it is time to reap what you have sewn. Shame on Obama for politicizing justice too, should he be, but you paved the way. It works both ways. Mr. Cheney — good grief — even Richard Nixon knew not to politicize the Justice Department.

Please, Dick, just go away. I’m disgusted every time I see or hear you. It is why I avoid Fox News like the plague. Seriously, you are like fingernails on a chalkboard. Hypocrites tend to do that to me. Even still, I take pity on you. I wouldn’t want to be you and have to explain your actions to God. How sad, for you, if you think this is it. Life here may be temporary, but it is critically important. Our souls are eternal. I have never been more sure of it. Change your ways, Mr. Cheney, and redemption will follow; so will justice. The way you have behaved is coming back to haunt you. The problem I have the most is that I, and people like me, are having to pay for your insanity.

My friends today I discuss something that really disturbs and hurts me a lot. The human race deserve

My friends today I discuss something that really disturbs and hurts me a lot. The human race deserves nothing from God except hell itself. We can never be good enough to think that we have earned anything from the Lord. We can never have done enough good deeds or behaved nice enough or have gone to church enough to be saved from hell. The only reason mankind has a chance, despite our filth, to make it into the kingdom of heaven is because of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the only one who deserves anything because He is the only one who triumphed over all without the slightest blemish. And even while He stood on earth, He never exalted Himself before His Father in Heaven. Instead He asked that His Father’s will be done instead of His own. Jesus Christ was the only person in history to live without any evil inside of Him and yet still be punished for all the evils we have done.

Nothing impure or with the slightest sin can enter into the kingdom of God. Any one sin makes a person fit for only hell. We have to understand that God is a perfect being. He is flawless and it seems absurd that something filthy or dirty should be able to come into contact with something so clean. I myself am thousands of dollars in debt from college and the Lord said to owe no one the slightest farthing. So right there I deserve hell for being in so deep in debt and disobeying God. God is the very definition of what is good or holy. What man sees as good is actually just evil. And it makes sense to when you consider that God is omnipotent and knows what is best for everything—anywhere.

Even though I call myself a Christian I might still go to hell just as much as any atheist or satanist. What makes me so special? How am I any more deserving of the Lord’s mercy as the guy across the street or on the other side of the world? There is no guarantee that I am destined for Heaven. Mary K. Baxter said that when she was dealt a vision of hell, she saw many Christians there. Even if the Lord promised me that I would be in His kingdom, would we really want to know? Would we really want to know so that we may prop our feet up on the desk and relax? Would we really want to know so that we show no thought or pray for people who are going to hell? I personally ask that the Lord breaks my heart and makes me fearful of Him so that I may never relax or stop showing mercy to others. I pray that I am always kept on my toes so that I may constantly reform myself and that many others join me in the Lord’s kingdom. But I will not know until the day I die.

Jesus Christ is the bouncer at the door and if He doesn’t like the way you appear to Him, He won’t let you inside His Kingdom. I can say I know Jesus Christ all I wants, but what counts in the end is if He knows me.

The only person worthy is Jesus Christ. Even though I try not to sin everyday I still manage to do that. For example before I went to type this very blog I stopped to have lunch. Right there I have sinned in the eyes of God because I sought out my own fulfillment before God’s. So I don’t walk the streets looking down on people going “tsk tsk that person is going to hell because he’s like that or this person is going to fall because he’s doing this”. I wouldn’t even dare think of such a thing, because all of us are in need of Jesus Christ. Who am I to pass judgment on anyone? For I am not God nor am I totally perfect like Jesus Christ. Instead I pray that all of us make it into the Lord’s kingdom. I pray that Jesus rescue us all, from all religions and peoples. I pray that people who have angered or hurt me make it into heaven all the same. And for people who have ever been kind to me then I hope their mansion in heaven is doubled when they see it. But this will only happen with Jesus Christ. All I can do as a mortal imperfect man is to pray for others.

Do any of you remember back in school when you saw that beautiful woman or handsome man? And you knew that you didn’t have a chance with them because they were the most popular, the most smartest, the richest or the most athletic person in school. Well this is God. He’s this all powerful being that is spotless and pure. And we are just these flawed and temporary creatures that He has made. I’m not saying this for the purpose of being humble; rather it is just pure logic. If you made a pile of mud and it asked to dwell inside your cleaned house, would you do it? No you wouldn’t. But God was willing to sacrifice Himself so that these piles of mud would be clean enough to enter His house.

We are all undeserving of the white robes of Christ, that is why I thank Him and praise Him for His sacrifice where He suffered for it. Understand that those white robes He will clothe us in was brought at a very very high price. He had to bleed and agonize for them. He didn’t have to do it, because He was totally perfect…yet He did. And He didn’t just do it for us Christians, but He did it for every single person across the globe. I know that many people say in their heart, “oh God owes me for this” or “or God is suppose to reward me for what I did here” or “God should give me that for me being like this”. I say again, we do NOT deserve ANYTHING. The only reason we get something is because of Jesus Christ.

God will have mercy on who He wants. For some people have only one chance to repent and others have multiple. We are not to understand or to know God’s master plan. But one thing are to do is to trust Him. It is good that God does not let us know His master plan or who is to be saved or not. For if we did, we may become less mindful of His glory and perfection. Let us serve God; the very source of goodness and perfection and let us feel honored by it. For the very air I breathe, I am grateful to God for it.

Back in October 2008, The Times reported that, “The class of 2008 faces unprecedented levels of debt and is struggling to find jobs as the credit crunch takes hold.” Now as the UK is in another age of Recession and as Government Mp’s continue to rape the Country of all its financial stability, are University graduates still “Paralysed” by the fear of no jobs?

The classic image of the nine to five way of life is now full of desperate insecurity for every class of the working people. University Graduates, with their copious amounts of debt, now have to face the facts. There are no more jobs.

Jobs for graduate this year have now fallen by a fifth. So it comes as no surprise that this year has been hailed as the “Worst year to graduate from Universities.” City jobs within Investment Banking were worst hit by the Recession, stating they had received “significantly” more applications from graduates even after vacancies were filled. It seems that graduates are tearing off their fingernails just to get at least some job security, if any.

As students are “investing” in their future by studying at Universities and therefore “investing” in the Government and after Government meddling with student admissions, it seems in the Government’s best interests to support graduates as much as possible when trying to achieve in this, the age of Recession.

August is that awkward month where all the fashion magazines are talking about the hot fall trends and all the stores are starting to put our their fall merchandise, but the hot wilmington summer still blazes on. The best way to approach this dilemma is to start shopping for pieces that you can wear now and also in October when it finally starts to cool down! Here are some suggestions:

1. Baggy Tunic

Try this Blue Tassel Collection Tunic from Lula Balou $148

or this DEPT Printed Tunic from Sonny B. was $64, now $38

Wear it now with cute little sandals and a hobo bag.

Wear it later layered with a blazer, tights or leggings and boots.

2. Boyfriend Button-Up

This Fresh Karma Button-Up from Lula Balou is perfect! It also ties in the back to give a little more shape. $88

Wear it now in place of a jacket over a simple tank and shorts.

Wear it later with a crisp blazer tucked into pleated or harem pants.

3. Maxi Dress

This Mitto Flowered Maxi Dress from Island Passage is beautiful. $58

I love the pattern on thisVeronica M Maxi Dress from Lula Balou. $118

Wear it now as is!

Wear it later with a cropped long sleeve T over top (It can secretly double as a skirt!)

4. Long Tank or Vest

Love this long Ya Vest from Sole Searching. It can amp up any outfit! $45

Wear it now over a cami and shorts.

Wear it later over a plain long sleeved shirt and jeans.

This Velvet Green Tank from Island passage looks a little awkward on the hanger but has a great drapey fit and a plunging back (looove) $77

Wear it now with cute little shorts to show off your tanned back!

Wear it later with an open cardigan and loose pants with a skinny belt to cinch the waist.

5. Jumper

This won’t work with all jumpers, but with the perfect fit, you can just add tights and a jacket later on!

Try this Haven Patterned Jumper from Island Passage. $124 (I will buy it if you don’t)

Wear it now as is if your feeling scandalous, or with a cami underneath.

Wear it later with tights and a long sleeved shirt that mimicks the neckline or with a blazer.

6. The New “LBD”

Wilmingtonians love their colors and patterns, so what a perfect place to re-invent the “Little Black Dress” as the “Little Bright Dress.” The key is to find a structured dress in a bright or saturated color. Its much more exciting and, with these layering techniques, can be worn almost year-round.

Try this Donna Morgan Pink Dress from Lula Balou. $168

Or this Gourmet Wear Yellow Dress with Flowers also from Lula Balou. $68

If your looking for something a little muted, but with just the same wow factor, try this BB Dakota Tube Dress from Island Passage. $55

Wear it now as is!

Wear it later under an oxford and roomy sweater or use a blazer to cover a dress with little coverage, and just add tights!

7. Sleeveless Blouse

Love the zipper and bowtie on this Kersh tank from Lula Balou. $48

or try this Trinity Patterned Tank from Sonnny B. was $62, now $56

Wear it now with shorts/skirt.

Wear it later with a long sleeved shirt or turtleneck of the same color, or cover up with a cardigan made with heavier fabric.

8. White Denim

With such a beachy climate and culture, the rule of “no white after labor day,” just doesn’t fly here. Get your own pair of Blank NYC skinny jeans from Sonny B. $78

Wear it now with your favorite flirty, flowery blouse.

Wear it later with muted tops and accessories (navy, gray, or champagne) or with metallics.

9. Cropped Jacket

I saw this idea in a magazine and kind of fell in love with it.

First step, grab a cropped jacket, like this Tulle Collarless Gray Blazer from Island Passage. $80

Wear it now over a sheath or bustier dress with little coverage.

Wear it later by layering a fur vest over it with pants! (how fun, right?)

10. Classic White Blouse

I found a couple great examples of the classic white blouse with a little umph.

Feel romantic in this Parameter White Blouse from Lula Balou. $98 (the light-weight material is perfect)

Get Glam with this C. Luce White Shirt with a big ol’ tie also from Lula Balou. $48

Wear it now tucked into tailored shorts or with a high-waisted skirt.

Wear it later with shorts and tights, or with pants, or with a skirt and tights…..basically anything.

11. Peep-Toe Platforms

Get excited because it is now okay to wear (certain) open toe shoes with tights! That means practically year-round fabulousness! Here are a few examples:

Me Too “Daily 6″ Tan Platforms from Sole Searching. $99

Cindy Says “Solstice” Blue Suede Platform with awesome bling heel from Sole Searching. $95

Nine West “Kentaro” Gladiator Heel from Sole Searching. $89

Wear it now as is.

Wear it later with tights, and I don’t mean just solid tights, fun patterns are okay, too!

–

The best thing to do when trying to pick out transitional pieces is to ask yourself a few questions….”Can I layer this with a long sleeve shirt, turtleneck, cardigan, jacket….?” “Can I wear this with leggings or tights?” Even clothes with bright patterns or colors can work if you match them with other muted pieces and accessories. You can do it!

–

One other thing that is transitional from season to season is jewelry! I’m loving geometric shapes and Art Deco-esque pieces right now.

This necklace from Island Passage is great! $18

Try these Verdier Earrings from Lula Balou $32

or these Turquoise and Pearl Earrings from Ziabird. $48

And nothing says “I’m fabulous and you should probably know me,” more than this Rings Eclectic by Melanie Lynn Ring from Sole Searching. $95

With everyone seemingly to be on a tight budget these days, these are some great options to maximize the utility of your clothes and money!
