Alla sammanfattar 00-talet just nu, jag är inget undantag. Det kom en hel hög bra filmer under decenniet, från hyperrealistiska dramadokumentärer till högklassig fantasy och underbara animerade filmer.

Här är de tio bästa:

10. Donnie Darko
Den här filmen hade inte behövt alla tidstypiska poplåtar för att placera sig omisskännligt i 80-talet. Stämningarna som byggs upp och skildringen av Donnies accelererande psykos gör den till det mästerverk den är.

9. Der Baader-Meinhof Komplex
Kritiken mot den här filmen är befogad, lika lite som boken den bygger på förklarar den på något begripligt vis Röda arméfraktionens drivkrafter, förutom att det ser väldigt häftigt ut att sno bilar, spränga saker och skjuta folk. Å andra sidan lyckas filmen verkligen med den uppgiften, stadsgerilla har aldrig varit sexigare.

8. Der Untergang
I Der Baader-Meinhof Komplex spelar Bruno Ganz terroristbekämparen Horst Herold, mannen som skaffade sig ett eget datoriserat furstendöme på BKA i Wiesbaden. I Der Untergang är han der Führer själv. En paranoid, nervsjuk gammal man i ett rike i totalt sönderfall. Den definitiva Hitlerfilmen.

7. Morvern Callar
Samantha Morton är lysande som missanpassad snabbköpskassörska i en film som är lika vacker när den skildrar skotsk vinter som spansk sommar.

6. Bloody Sunday
Brittiska soldaters massmord på fjorton obeväpnade demonstranter i stadsdelen Bogside i Derry, Nordirland 30 januari 1972 skildras utdraget och obarmhärtigt realistiskt. Som film om terrorns orsaker är den raka motsatsen till Der Baader-Meinhof Komplex. Konkretare och mer lättbegripligt kan det knappast bli.

5. This is England
Britterna har en alldeles särskild känsla för realism, och en kärlek till sina subkulturer som av någon anledning saknas helt i Sverige. En kärleksförklaring till skinheads som går rätt in i hjärtat.

4. Spirited Away
Hayao Miyazakis verkliga genombrottsfilm i västvärlden är en helt fantastisk sagoberättelse och något av det bästa tecknade jag sett på film.

3. Lord of the Rings-trilogin
JRR Tolkien skrev de ultimata fantasyromanerna, och Peter Jackson har gjort den ultimata fantasyfilmen. Ses helst i de förlängda DVD-versionerna, i en följd.

2. The Virgin Suicides
USA-premiär 1999, Sverigepremiär 2000. Därmed kvalar Sofia Coppolas hyllning till Peter Weirs Picnic at Hanging Rock in på den här listan. Så fantastiskt vacker.

1. Fight Club
Ja, den kom verkligen 1999, men överskuggar 00-talet så fullständigt att den självklart toppar en sådan här lista. Ett mästerverk och en av de där filmerna som faktiskt är bättre än boken.

- film tipic de suspans pentru hollywood, anii 2000. nici rau, dar cu siguranta nici bun. Colin Farrell si Al Pacino, iar actrita prezenta in film arata ca un travestit. scenariul are cateva rasturnari de situatie, dar se situeaza departe de stacheta ridicata de Fincher cu “The Game”. prea mediocru pentru un review.

4. Two for the money
- desi e un film despre vanzari si despre fotbal american, reuseste sa fie incredibil de pliiiictiiiisiiiiitooooooooor. Un Al Pacino departe de pregnanta actoriceasca obisnuita, si Matthew McConaughey banal pana la dumnezeu. review: sub nici o forma.

5. Donnie Brasco
- maratonul Al Pacino continua, de data asta fiind secondat de Johnny Depp. ( E interesenant cum in aproape toate filmele lui ( mai putin Scarface ), nu prea exista femei care sa-i dea replica lui Pacino, ci doar barbati. ) Filmul e in cu totul alta categorie decat cele doua de deasupra lui, e unul din filmele mele favorite despre mafie – the Godfather imi displace profund, btw – si nici macar nu e regizat de unul din principalii regizori asociati cu filmele de genul asta ( de Palma, Scorsese sau Coppola ), ci de Mike Newell. In mod clar, va avea un review.

Pe heavy rotation: Rakim – It’s been a long time

Capodopera! Dupa “Lola Rennt” si “Perfume: Story of a Murderer”, un alt film care ma face sa apreciez extrem de mult cinematografia germana.

Filmul ( bazat pe cartea scrisa de Traudl Junge, cea care i-a fost secretara lui Hitler din decembrie 1942 pana in aprilie 1945 ) incepe cu momentul in care tanara Junge ( jucata de Alexandra Maria Lara ) il cunoaste pe Hitler ( Bruno Ganz ). Apoi sare direct in data de 20 aprilie ‘45, aniversarea zilei de nastere a Führerului, intr-un Berlin dezolant, devastat de artileria rusa, in care populatia – atat cat a mai ramas din ea – se ascunde prin case sau incearca sa fuga. In contrast cu strazile Berlinului, in buncarul lui Hitler se desfasoara petrecerea pentru ziua lui, in egala masura de ridicol si de halucinant, cu Eva Braun ( Juliane Köhler ) dansand swing pe masa, in timp ce bombardamentele rusesti zguduie peretii camerei.

Fara a fi un film de razboi in adevaratul sens al cuvantului, filmul schimba de mai multe ori decorul intre lupta inutila si cu final implacabil care se mai da pe strazi, ultimele zvacniri ale armatei germane, cu batrani impuscati ca fiind dezertori doar pentru ca au incercat sa se ascunda de armata rusa, cu copii de 10-12 ani luptand ca soldati, etc. De cealalta parte, in adancurile buncarului, un Hitler macinat de stari contrastante, “scuturat” de parkinson, isi petrece ultimele zile ale vietii faurind in continuare planuri delirante pentru renasterea Germaniei din propria-i cenusa, formuland manevre strategice pe harta cu armate care nu mai exista, rupt total de realitate sau, dupa caz, de orice urma de umanitate, ca atunci cand decide ca populatia Berlinului trebuie sa moara pentru ca, considera el, populatia e vinovata pentru ca a permis sovieticilor sa patrunda in oras.

Starile diametral opuse prin care trece Hitler, de la iluzia grandorii data de erijarea sa in salvatorul Europei de bolsevici, pana la teama paranoica de a fi tradat de generalii sai, sunt amplificate de anturajul sau, incepand cu maresalii care se tem sa-i comunice situatia reala in care se afla armata germana pentru a nu fi executati, pana la seful propagandei naziste, Joseph Goebbels ( jucat magistral de Ulrich Matthes ), care prefera sa se piarda in idealuri goale si fanatism orbitor, decat sa estimeze situatia tarii sale intr-un mod real, sau macar uman.

In final, insa, “Der Untergang” este povestea unei comunitati, nu a unor indivizi, este povestea berlinezilor si a unui popor invins, nu istoria unor lideri bolnavi. Totul este asezonat din plin cu o cinematografie excelenta, un joc actoricesc impecabil, net superior cliseelor hollywood-iene, si muzica pe alocuri sublima, pe alocuri mai putin, a lui Stephan Zacharias.

Bruno Ganz’s Adolf Hitler har efterhånden forbandet det meste på Guds grønne jord, og selvom Newcastle rykkede ned i sidste sæson, bliver denne video aldrig forældet.

Hacía tiempo venía esperando esta peli. No porque me gusten los melodramas de los judíos en el holocausto, muy por el contrario este incidente en la peli es más circunstancial que otra cosa y eso me gustó mucho.

The Reader una peli del querido Stephen Daldry, por fin llegó a nuestras pantallas. Es una peli que participó en los Oscar de este año, entonces no hay mucho lío. Lo increíble es que esta peli ganó Oscar a mejor actriz principal para Kate Winslet y fue nominada como mejor película, mejor dirección y mejor guión adaptado. ¿Por qué no la habían traído antes? No tengo la menor idea.

Esta peli ha resultado ser como el chontaduro, que se le describe con una pasión extrema. Ó es odiada o es amada. Por mi lado, y esto tengo que revisarlo muy personalmente porque me ha venido sucediendo repetidamente este año, me hizo quebrar en llanto otra vez. Es una peli conmovedora y extremadamente tierna. Adornada con una fotografía exquisita y unas imágenes narrativas muy a lo que nos tiene acostumbrados Daldry.

Nos pueden contar el final, nos pueden contar la trama, nos pueden decir que es buena o es mala, pero sólo cuando uno se enfrenta a la peli se puede dar cuenta de lo bien dirigida que está, de lo bien hecha que quedó, de las buenas actuaciones y de la bella fotografía. Tengo una anécdota, alguien me dijo esta peli es muy bonita y todo pero el maquillaje está tenaz, muy malo; le replique que si se había dado cuenta que tanto Rose Mather e Ilana Mather (madre e hija ) eran la misma actriz, me dijo que no y yo le respondí que para eso sirve un buen maquillaje.

Stephen Daldry es un director que ha hecho cuatro pelis, la primera no se la conozco, Eight de 1998, pero el resto, Billy Elliot de 2000, The Hours de 2002 y ahora esta The Reader, son de excelente factura y cada una de ellas ha sido nominada como mejor dirección en los Oscar. Daldry un amante de los dramas psicológicos nos ofrece unas producciones llenas de humanidad, de reconciliación y de escrúpulos. Sus dos últimas pelis le dieron el reconocimiento a sus actrices principales en sus respectivos premios de La Academia. Particularmente, Kate Winslet tuvo mucho coraje apra salir adelante con dos megaproducciones, esta, The Reader y acompañada de su esposo Sam Mendes en Revolutionary Road repitiendo reparto con Leonardo DiCaprio quien ya la había acompañado en Titanic de James Cameron de 1997. Para los Golden Globes, se llevó tanto mejor actriz de reparto como mejor actriz principal; para los Oscar no sólo se llevo mejor actriz principal sino que mantiene un prontuario envidiable con seis nominaciones. En esta peli la acompañan el joven David Kross, Ralph Fiennes, Bruno Ganz (magnífico actor que recordamos por Der Untergang interpretando a Adolf Hitler o sus participaciones en La Trilogía de los Ángeles de Wim Wenders) y Lena Olin. Aunque corta, la presencia de Fiennes es muy interesante; desde The Constant Gardener de Fernando Meirelles de 2005 he sentido en este actor una madurez actoral impresionante que se ha dedicado a producciones comerciales pero cuando se compromete con proyectos independientes logra explotar todo su potencial.

No es una peli fácil pero tampoco es tan díficil de comprender. El personaje de Winslet me conmueve en muchos sentidos y me recuerda que el hombre no es absolutamente malo, ni tampoco obra en maldad completamente consciente, que errar es humano pero amar es mucho más que divino, que somos hombres y que por alcanzar esta deidad podemos herir a otras personas sin darnos cuenta. Pero sobre todo que el orgullo es el peor de los enemigos de este.

Tonight the program schedule both on the State Italian TV and on the privately-held Mediaset had to change in order to make space, or make audience, for a propagandistic program (on RAI 1) hosting the prime minister.

When I switched the TV on RAI3 I saw that there was Der Untergang, the movie by Oliver Hirschbiegel. How appropriate. Instead of boycotting TV tonight I felt the best thing to do was to stick to RAI 3 and watch once more the movie, this time having read a few books on the theme, such as Beavor’s “Berlin 1945″, Anonyma’s “A woman in Berlin” or Helga Schneider’s memories.

We had seen the movie with Bruno Ganz at the cinema. At that time I asked to Our Friend in Moabit if she had seen the movie, she was a child in 1945. She was so kind as to send me this article on the film, and today BerlinRomExpress publishes her impressions.

The title of this post quotes the final sentence of the movie.

Der Untergang

Meine Schwester hat mich eigentlich darauf gebracht, diesen Film als eine der ersten zu sehen.

Wir treffen uns also am Potsdamer Platz und gehen ins Cinemax. Ganze Schulklassen bevölkern die ersten Reihen, verhalten sich aber ruhig über die drei Stunden, die dieser Film dauert.

Mein Eindruck : ich glaube man hat versucht,soweit das nach über fünfzig Jahren noch möglich ist, die wahre Geschichte zu zeigen. Großartig Bruno Ganz als Hitler : einerseits der Fanatische, der sich während seiner Reden in größenwahnsinnige Ideen steigert, dann wieder der kleine provinzielle Mensch. Ein krankes Gehirn, das ein ganzes Volk und unzählige Juden in den Untergang gestürzt hat. Und doch muß er in der Zeit davor, hier werden ja nur die letzten fünf Tage gezeigt, eine grosse Überzeugungskraft gehabt haben um soviele Menschen mitzureissen.

Fanatismus ist blind, lässt nicht links und rechts, nicht Gut und Böse sehen.

Viele Szenen von den Strassenkämpfen in Berlin machen mich persönlich betroffen und in diesem grossen Kino bin ich wieder als Kind in diesem Bomben- und Artilleriehagel.                Ich war damals 10 Jahre alt und hatte zwei kleine Schwestern. Unsere Eltern hatten uns vorsorglich an den Stadtrand nach Haselhorst gebracht, dort hatten wir ein Sommerhäuschen und ganz in der Nähe war ein Bunker in dem wir die letzten Kriegstage gelebt haben.        Viele Szenen in dem Film erinnert mich auch daran. Einmal war ich zurück zu unserem Häuschen gelaufen und bin in einen Beschuss gekommen, schreiend und weinend habe ich mich in einen Busch geworfen : mir war nichts passiert, als eine Pause war rannte ich in den Bunker.  In dem Film wird eine Szene mit einer zerschossenen Strassenbahn gezeigt : das ist für mich eine ganz starke Erinnerung : an der Haltestelle, an der wir oft auf unseren Vater, der aus unserer Schneiderei in der Stadt kam, gewartet hatten, war eine Strassenbahn von einer Bombe getroffen worden. Ich war danach in der Nähe, sah die ausgebrannte Strassenbahn, sah verstreut Leichenteile herumliegen – eine manikürte Frauenhand -.  Ich bin heute über 70 Jahre alt und habe es nicht vergessen. Und doch,wir waren Kinder , haben in den Bombenkratern gespielt, weil da so schöner weisser Sand war.   Wie meine Mutter , die mit Erika  im fünften Monat schwanger war,  es geschafft hat uns drei Kinder : Hilma, Hanni und mich zu ernähren, von Sattessen konnte keine Rede sein, weiß ich nicht. Eine Hilfe war der kleine Garten mit der Laube in der wir in diesem Sommer 1945 waren. Es gab Tomaten, Kartoffel und etwas Obst. Die einzige Verbindung in die Stadt war die U-Bahn von Ruhleben. Zu der musste man über die Spree mit einer zerschossenen Brücke neben dem Kraftwerk West (später Reuter). Die Stahlträger der Brücke, in der Mitte getroffen, hingen von beiden Seiten ins Wasser und über die Kluft von zwei – drei Metern lag ein Holzbrett über das man balancieren musste. Ich erinnere mich daran wie an einen Abenteuer-Spaziergang. Wir mussten, wollten in die Stadt, denn in unserer Wohnung in Charlottenburg in der Wilmersdorfer Strasse war unsere Tante Lieschen und die Eltern meiner Mutter. Das Haus stand inmitten von Bombenruinen und unsere Verwandten lebten. Im Nachhinein muss ich sagen : wir hatten trotz allem einen oder mehrere Schutzengel. Keinem aus meiner Familie ist etwas geschehen : im August 1945 wurde meine kleine Schwester Erika geboren und später kamen auch mein Vater und mein Bruder aus den Kriegswirren nach Hause.

Nach diesem Film verliessen Hilma und ich mit zittrigen Knien das Kino uns war auch kalt, Hilma meinte mal wieder trocken „mal sehen ob draussen alles in Ordnung ist“, denn die letzten Kämpfe um Berlin hatten sich genau um den Potsdamer Platz herum abgespielt.

Wir mussten uns aufwärmen, all die aufgewühlten Erinnerungen verarbeiten dazu haben wir die beste Lösung gefunden : in den Arkaden beim Italiener mit einem Glas Rotwein u.Pizza.

Zum Schluss : Was ist die Wahrheit ? Jeder Mensch hat seine eigene. Kluge , Einsichtige versuchen selbstkritisch auch die Wahrheiten der anderen zu hören. Bei Erinnerungen wird es mit der Wahrheitsfindung besonders schwierig. Jeder dreht das Erlebte oft wunschgemäss zurecht. Sieht Ereignisse nur aus seinem Blickwinkel.

A few years ago I went to see the German film der Untergang (Downfall) about the last days of Hitler’s reign in Berlin. Mid way through the film this music started playing:

and I thought to myself….what has a 17th Century; early Baroque English composer; writing about an ancient Roman legend; set in what is now Tunisia; got to do with Nazi Germany?

The piece is Dido’s Lament from Henry Purcell’s opera Dido & Aeneas.  Aeneas is the ancient hero who founded Rome after a long journey from Troy. Along the way he stopped off in Carthage, shared a romance with Queen Dido, then left her when the Gods reminded him he was a man on a mission, and the heartbroken Dido kills herself. It’s a funny connection from this to Hitler’s last days, but I knew the answer all the same. It was a moment of crisis in both the story of Dido & in Downfall; both were about sadness and impending failure and suicide. And Purcell’s air is exactly the piece of music to convey this emotion.

When I Am Laid in Earth is a beautiful, haunting and poignant piece of music.  It’s possibly Purcell’s most remembered and liked music and righly so.  What makes it more fascinating is that it is so advanced for it’s day. Purcell uses sliding notes and minor chords for that haunting tragic feel, at a time when music was composed using basic chords and generally stripped down to a few string instruments.

To bring it back to modern times, Dido’s Lament was also covered by the man who so successfully covered Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah – the late Jeff Buckley, who sang the song in falsetto, live at Meltdown Festival, London in July 1995, who also had his own tragic end:

Very different from the classical soprano treatment but still beautiful.

Vet inte om det bara är jag, men är det inte något väldigt obehagligt med tjocka operasångare täckta med glödlampor?

9 – Begbie (Robert Carlyle) – Trainspotting

Jag har träffat några Begbies i mitt liv. De har alltid varit jobbigare att ha dem som vänner än som fiender. Fiender är nämligen betydligt lättare att undvika.

8 – Idi Amin (Forest Whitaker) – The Last King of Scotland

En jättestor nallebjörn som kramar dig ena dagen och äter dina barn till frukost nästa. Jag inbillar mig att den här personlighetstypen är ganska vanlig bland chefer. Jag hoppas den är något mindre vanlig bland premiärministrar.

7 – Jesus Quintana (John Turturro) – The Big Lebowski

Killen kanske blottar sig för åttaåringar. Men efter att ha sett filmen ville jag ha en sån där lila kroppstight bowlingdress. Ändå. Så nu vet du vad jag önskar mig i julklapp.

6 – Rymdvarelserna – Mars Attacks

De drivs inte av någonting annat än att vara elaka och förstöra saker. Vem har inte mått så? Skillnaden är att de flesta av oss inte tycker det är hysteriskt roligt. Eller, jo förresten. Det gör vi nog.

5 – Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher) - Gökboet

Varje gång jag tvingats besöka arbetsförmedlingen har jag fått syster Ratched som handläggare. Som lägger huvudet på sned, visar lite sympati och vänligt men bestämt förklarar att de är bäst för mig själv att göra som jag blir tillsagd och att det är helt och hållet mitt eget fel att jag försatt mig i den här situationen.

4 – Joseph Goebbels (Ulrich Matthes) – Der Untergang

Den som får Adolf Hitler att framstå som en blödig filantrop i jämförelse är givetvis självskriven på en sån här lista.

3 – Colonel Walter E. Kurtz (Marlon Brando) – Apocalypse Now

I dokumentären om Apocalypse Now, som är nästan lika bra som själva filmen, jämför Coppola inspelningen med det riktiga vietnamkriget. We had too much money, too much equipment, and little by little we went insane. Galnast av alla blev utan tvekan Marlon Brando.

2 – Attila Mellanchini (Donald Sutherland) – 1900

Efter att ha studerat scenen där Attila leker karusell med en liten pojke kan jag konstatera två saker. Det är dumt att låta Attila passa barn. Det är ännu dummare att låta honom och hans gelikar styra ett helt land under flera år.

1 – Don Lope de Aguirre (Klaus Kinski) – Aguirre

Aguirre är den bästa film om vansinne som gjorts. Klaus Kinski, som spelar sig själv, är skvatt galen genom hela filmen. Avslutningstalet på flotten där han proklamerar planen på världsherravälde för en flock apor får resten av karaktärerna på den här listan att framstå som ganska sunda individer.

en audi a3, notene til den fine sangen fra Der Untergang, ein pusekatt, ein mann, ein hvalp og Radioresepsjonent-skjorte (den på bildet er den gamle da).

Akkurat nå har jeg mest lyst på flere timer til jeg skal på jobb, men jeg greier meg.  Litt penger er jo alltid fint også, i så fall når jeg fikk vite at vi må kjøpe alt tegneustyret til høsten selv! Men det er vell det som er det fine med lånekassen.

Nog niet zo heel lang geleden zag ik twee opvallende films binnen korte tijd. De ene was Der Baader Meinhof Komplex over de Duitse terroristische groepering de RAF, de andere heette Indigénes. Een film over de schandalige wijze waarop het Franse leger in de Tweede Wereldoorlog omging met hun kameraden de koloniale moslim strijders. Op zich niets vreemds zo zou je denken, totdat ik begon te denken over Nederlandse tegenhangers. Tot mijn verbazing moest ik concluderen dat Nederland een weinig indrukwekkende traditie heeft op het gebied van het verfilmen van de zwarte bladzijdes uit de vaderlandse geschiedenis.

Het mag toch op zijn zachtst gezegd vreemd heten dat er nog steeds geen Nederlandse film is over de Nederlandse rol in Srebrenica (de praktisch door niemand geziene miniserie De Enclave daargelaten), de VOC en de daarbij behorende slavernij verhalen, de foute Nederlanders in de Tweede Wereldoorlog of meer recenter de problemen met de Islam, de bijlmerramp of de deelname aan de oorlog in Irak? 

De ons omringende landen doen het bijna stuk voor stuk wel. In Duitsland waren de hoofdrolspelers in de laatste drie grote films naast de al eerder genoemde leden van de RAF, Adolf Hitler en een Stasi-agent. In Ierland zijn talloze films gemaakt over de IRA en de daarbij behorende twijfelachtige politieke keuzes. Frankrijk probeerde met La Haine de jongeren in de achterbuurten van Parijs te doorgronden, Spanje nam onlangs met Pan’s Labyrint de periode ten tijde van Franco onder de loep en in Italië zijn er voorbeelden te over van films over maatschappelijke misstanden.

Onze zuiderburen de Belgen kunnen misschien nog wel het best met ons concurreren. Zij hebben ook een allesbehalve grootse historie op het gebied van het verfilmen van eigen tekortkomingen. (waar blijft bijvoorbeeld een film over de rol van de Belgen bij de Rwandanes genocide) Al is Daens de verfilming over de wantoestanden in de Belgische fabrieken eind 19e eeuw natuurlijk wel een heus meesterwerk.

In Nederland blijft het echter angstvallig stil. Enkel regisseur Fons Rademakers mag met Max Havelaar en in mindere mate De Aanslag nog enigzins een filmmaker genoemd worden die de omstreden thema’s niet schuwde. Waarom de rest van het vaderlandse filmmakersgilde de zwarte bladzijdes angstvallig mijdt, geen idee. Krijgen ze geen subsidie of heeft het simpelweg te maken met de volksaard ik durf het niet zeggen. Het is echter te hopen dat er in de nabije toekomst weer een nieuwe Fons Rademakers opstaat want de mogelijke verhalen liggen, na zoveel jaar negeren, voor het oprapen
