For a really nice slice of gloomy punk, check out Portland quartet Neon Piss‘ two-song sampler taken from their upcoming self-titled debut 12″ EP release. A nice blend of classic punk rock, early New Wave and a dark feel similar to their fellow compatriots The Wipers, they manage to offer up some really nice hooks amid the desperation without sounding the least bit commercial or pretentious.

Perfectly executed, the band is tight and their songwriting skills hold a really high level making me pretty damn sure these guys are gonna make some big waves in the future. Vinyl versions will be released in the US (Deranged Records) and Europe (Cut The Cord That…) soon and right now you can download a total of six tracks for free so check them out!

Fucked Up added to the vinyl documentary

Fucked Up is the latest addition to the vinyl documentary… Fucked Up captivated collectors in a non-conventional way by releasing several short vinyl-only 7″ singles. These singles almost never came on colored or limited vinyl, and most followed the same layout with band name and title at the top. What was cool and refreshing about all of this was the absence of pressing after pressing of wacky colored vinyl. It was always black vinyl, and once you got one single, it seemed like there was already another one coming out. It’s shocking that the band was able to grow so quickly with vinyl-only releases, with very little CD or digital download releases. Nevertheless, there was obviously a method to their madness, and that method has been wildly successful in getting their music out there. Fucked Up has gone on to release highly acclaimed full length “rock opera” type albums, culminating in Damian (vocalist) gracing the cover of SPIN magazine earlier this year (!!!), with “The Chemistry Of Common Life” touted as record of the year. I still can’t believe that! Good for them! This is a documentation of all the different Fucked Up records that I ever had… I definitely never had everything, so this is absolutely not meant to be an exhaustive list of everything that’s out there!

Red Dons is the primary band from what’s called the Vagabond Sound Music Collective based in Portland, started by Doug Burns (lead vocals/guitar) and Hajji Husayn (bass/vocals). While many folks have been in and out of the band, this collection is Burns, Husayn, Richard Joachim (drums/vocals) and Will Kinser (lead guitar) of Born/Dead (see A library).

Pariah is a very fast, in yo’ face punk track with a flat, repetetive guitar melody in the background. These guys know how to rock out.

It’s Your Right is a GEM! It changes tempo a couple times in the song, and switches from what sounds like three different tracks. They fit together very well. PLAY THIS SONG!

Very versatile for a punk group, these guys are pro”

I Got into Nomos after a mate sent me mp3′s of their demo 7″. God bless the Internet. I loved it but for some reason never thought to actually look into what else they’d got going on. They hail from Brooklyn, NY and play a kind of Infest influenced, fast, no bullshit hardcore, with a scuzzy punk influence in there too. Dark lyrics & rugged production, its good stuff. I was browsing for something else when I came across this 12″ – Notes From The Acheron.

Pressed on purple wax, limited to 100 and with an etched B-side. I was powerless. Released on Deranged Records. The B-side is etched with a portion of the artwork.

Big ass fold out poster with the lyrics on the back.

All artwork is by a dude called Vinnie Smith and it’s trippy. I checked out his website, he’s got some pretty cool stuff on there. Similar pieces to this Nomos art and photography of American counter-culture. And so in the name of completion, I also grabbed the aforementioned demo from the same store. Also on Deranged Records, on black out of 900.

The place I got this from still has some of the 12″ in stock. I wouldn’t imagine it’s many seeing as they were only out of 100 so get in there, you won’t be disappointed. And it’s UK shipping for all you local readers, so it won’t cost an arm and a leg to get it posted.

Burning Love - demo 7" (twice) & Don't Ever Change 7"

I’ve had a lot of good stuff all come in at once lately, some of which I’ve been waiting on for months but I’m working through it. I first heard Burning Love at the end of 2010 when their debut LP ‘Songs For Burning Lovers’ started showing up on a few hardcore blogs best-of-the-year lists. In all honesty I didn’t think that much to them. Fronted by ex-Cursed rager Chris Colohan, I was a bit disappointed and dismissed them after one listen. But like many times, i was completely fucking wrong. Over time I kept going back to that album and eventually it grew on me. So I’ll say this – if you think you don’t like Burning Love, you’re entitled to your opinion, but your wrong. Hardcore punk with a rock & roll swagger, massive grooves, bigger riffs. So get on with enjoying them. And in my spirit of spending money on records that I missed totally when they came out first time for half the price, I picked up a copy of their demo.

Released originally on cassette in 2009, it was pressed to vinyl and released by Canadian label Deranged Records the year after. 100 pressed on yellow with a yellow cover.

There were also red and black pressings, each limited to 100 again and with a corresponding coloured cover. But let’s go back in time. Before all this was pressed, Thirty Days Of Night released the demo 7″ in 2009 for us UK types to coincide with a Burning Love European tour. And luckily, while I was in the market for this demo, one of these appeared on EBay.

I got it for a bargain too, £2. Which I’m pretty sure would be cheaper than when TDON first released them.

And to round off this Burning Love 7″ trilogy, a single lifted from the debut LP. The dude I bought the yellow demo off was selling this too, and it seemed rude not to.

Don’t Ever Change on the A-side, with a Nick Cave cover Jack The Ripper on the B-side. Pressed on blue, limited to 250 and released on Deranged.

It’s a different version of Don’t Ever Change than what is on the album for some reason, production is a bit rougher. And the Nick Cave cover is awesome. Helped by the fact that Nick Cave is awesome anyway.

This is in our opinion this is the most complete punk album that be released in the last 2 years. This record is amazing, David Comes To Life can only be described as Fucked Up’s rock opera, for months we have waited for the excitement of this record, and it did not disappoint.

FUCKED UP “davids plan”

U.X. VILEHEADS “first ep”

Another couple things I picked up at Ameoba over the weekend due to their sale. I probably would never have bought either one of these things if they were not on sale. I remember when I first saw this FUCKED UP record in the store I thought “ohh cool a new FUCKED UP single” but then I noticed the price 11.95** no thank you. 2.99 is another story all together though. One Thing I always liked about their singles is the conformity of the covers, always the same general idea. Im listening to the U.X. VILEHEADS record right now its pretty damn good, straight forward hardcore/punk, whats not to like? This came out on Deranged records so if your into that labels punk stuff then you’ll probably like this. You gotta love it when you take a chance and it works out. Anyhow lots of records to post. later.

** edit, upon further research (looking at the back of the record sleeve) the proceeds from this record went to some worth while organizations. Im a dick.

Left for Dead

Left for Dead was a short lived power-hardcore/violence-hardcore or whatever you want to call it band from Hamilton in the mid-late 90s. They were fierce and fell like a punch in the face. They released a live split with Chokehold in 1996 on Rhythm of Sickness Records, a split with Ochre on Phyte Records and a split with Acrid on No Idea Records in 1997. Somewhere I read they also had their own 7″ ep but I haven’t heard it. All this stuff was compiled on a discography CD by No Idea Records in 1999 under the name “Splitting Heads”. In 2004 they did a brief reunion and recorded their live set which was released on LP by Deranged Records.

I don’t have the final live set, so if anyone wants to hook me up…

The Bootleg Series #4

Canada lleva tiempo siendo un territorio abonado para las buenas bandas en muchos y muy diversos estilos, pero, sobrer todo, está siendo fértil en lo que se refiere en la producción de excelentes formaciones de hardcore/punk. Un buen ejemplo son estos chicos de Toronto que responden al nombre de Fucked Up. Irreverentes desde el inicio. Sin myspaces ni webs. Políticamente incorrectos y comprometidos, alabados por Maximum Rock and Roll.

Tienen un buen número de singles, especialmente destacable el de mis queridos Haymaker, que en breve pasarán por la sección de descargas, que han sido editado en el no menos interesante sello Deranged Records. Posteriormente recopilados en un cd titulado Epics in Minutes. Hasta esta etapa, sus canciones eran directas. El estilo cambió algo con su llegada a Jade Tree y con sus siguientes trabajos, el larga duración Hidden World apuntó la nueva versión del grupo. Sin perder en intensidad y mala leche, sí que han introducido una mayor complejidad en las estructuras, canciones más largas, con variedad de partes, pero que no pierden interés en terminos hardcorepunkis.

Bueno, a todo esto, vienen de gira a nuestro país el próximo mes de julio según han confirmado en su blog. Estuvieron el año pasado en Barcelona y he oido de todo sobre su concierto. Esta vez harán varias fechas. Entre ellas, una en El Sol madrideleño acompañados por mis idoltrados Muletrain. Gran velada, lástima que lo voy a tener jodido por el curro, pero se intentará. 10 euros anticipada [ya a la venta en CD Drome y Bowery] y 12 en taquilla.
