Had a wonderful conversation on Thursday with Derek Haas, who wrote WANTED and 3:10 TO YUMA and seem

Had a wonderful conversation on Thursday with Derek Haas, who wrote WANTED and 3:10 TO YUMA and seems to be writing every movie that is in development in Hollywood. He’s a hell of a writer and a delightful guy. He was terribly helpful to my class. I’ll be drawing on what he told the students for a long, long time in my teaching and in my own writing.

I asked him what was the best piece of advice he’d ever gotten. He went into an executive’s office and the guy had a sign on his desk that said BIG IDEAS. That’s the advice. Big Ideas. Nothing small. Small is a poem or a short story. A movie must be about something big.

That is what Hollywood wants. Something that can be huge.

They want franchises. They want a massive property they can do again, and then do again. They want the next Bourne, or Bond or anything with Angelina Jolie. So give them that.

A distributor’s expenses are so astronomically high that they can’t be assured of making money unless there are gobs of ancillary tie-ins, so you have to give them something they can brand out the wazoo. A little movie about little people having intense, but small conflict may get made, but it’s got a looooooooooooong shot at getting distribution.

Don’t forget. Getting your movie made means you’re only halfway around the track. To actually finish the race, it has to be distributed.

Big ideas. That’s a simple concept. Is your idea big? For that matter, is mine?

After “The Hangover” did better than expected, Bradley Cooper (He’s Just Not That Into You), is in high demand. Apparently, he is in talks to star as Lt. Templeton “Faceman” Peck in the “A-Team”, an update of the TV show. It is being directed by Joe Carnahan (Smokin Aces). The plot will be the same, four vets are on the run after being framed by the military.

The script has been written by “Wanted” scribes Derek Haas and Michael Brandt. The film has a release date of June 11, 2010, however none of the other roles have been filled. Who would you like to see join the “A-Team”?

G. Jones.

Year: 2007
Director: James Mangold
Writers: Halsted Welles, Michael Brandt & Derek Haas, based on the story by Elmore Leonard
Starring: Russell Crowe, Christian Bale, Logan Lerman, Dallas Roberts, Ben Foster, Peter Fonda, Vinessa Shaw, Alan Tudyk, Luce Rains, Gretchen Mol
Music: Marco Beltrami
Distinctions: formerly on IMDb’s Top 250
Synopsis: a farmer helps escort a prisoner to earn the money to save his farm
How I saw it: on video, twice (rented from Netflix), most recently April 2008
Subjective Rating: 7/10
Objective Rating: 10/10

Not one of my favorites, but I could watch it once a year or so and still get pulled in. The story’s not very believable, despite apparent efforts at realism, but that’s okay, it’s a Western.

3:10 to Yuma (2007)

Rancher Dan Evans is perceived as less than a man by his wife and children thanks to the loss of a foot while in the army and a keep-the-peace attitude which currently sees him only a week away from losing his land to a corrupt neighbour. He gets the opportunity to earn $200 escorting notorious outlaw Ben Wade to Contention and the 3:10 prison train to Yuma but for Evans and Wade it will become about more than just the money.

7/10

This is a really good western, brilliantly performed by two leading contemporary actors (Russell Crowe and Christian Bale), but it makes the common movie mistake of portraying the non-Christian Bale good guys brutality with more impact than self-confessed all-bad, all-the-time Russell Crowe. There’s always a reason supplied for Crowe’s always-brief violence but the ‘good guys’ are just sadistic because that’s how they are in movies these days. There was no need for the good guys to be portrayed in this manner. Russell Crowe is charismatic and charming enough to tempt the audience to want him to escape without the bad treatment doled out to him while in custody. That gripe aside, though, this is a quality movie with an intriguing climax where men do what they gotta do.

This movie contains sexual swear words and graphic gun violence, unpleasant scenes and mild nudity.

Following the incredible success of the three Jason Bourne movies, one would have thought that Hollywood would be quick to adapt every Robert Ludlum book in sight. It was surprisingly not the case however as the only thing we got is a TV-movie based on a novel bearing Ludlum’s name but not actually written by him.

Now celebrated Canadian director David Cronenberg (Eastern Promises) is in talks to helm The Matarese Circle, which was adapted by duo Michael Brandt & Derek Haas (Wanted) and will star Denzel Washington (American Gangster).

In the 1979 book, two rival intelligence agents, one American, one Soviet, find themselves working together to ferret out and vanquish members of a mysterious group of criminals called the Matarese that has infiltrated the highest levels of American government. Ludlum published a sequel to “Circle,” “The Matarese Countdown,” in 1997, but the studio did not acquire the rights to it.

Cronenberg would definitely be a very interesting choice, and this would mark his biggest film yet, but the real question is, why the hell did MGM not buy the sequel rights? Just imagine the mess if a rival studio decides to snatch them.

Dirección: Timur Bekmambetov.
Guión: Michael Brandt, Derek Haas, Chris Morgan (Sobre el cómic de Mark Millar y J.G. Jones).
Reparto: James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman, Terence Stamp, Thomas Kretschmann, Common, Angelina Jolie.

Guión: Stuart Beattie, Michael Brandt, Derek Haas.
Reparto: Russell Crowe, Christian Bale, Logan Lerman, Dallas Roberts, Ben Foster, Peter Fonda, Vinessa Shaw, Alan Tudyk, Luce Rains, Gretchen Mol.

Derek Haas co-wrote the screenplay for ‘3:10 to Yuma’, and co-wrote ‘Wanted’

Derek Haas co-wrote the screenplay for ‘3:10 to Yuma’, and co-wrote ‘Wanted’, a recent film. The Silver Bear is his first novel.

‘Columbus’ is an assassin, and we soon discover that he’s a hitman who’s both feared and respected. It’s quite obvious that he’s one of the very best. For his latest contract, he’s given a name well known to him.. a congressman whom he also has ties with. As he travels, and prepares himself for this latest kill, Colmbus shares with us his past – sharing the events that lead him to become a hit man, and also those leading to this point in his life.

The story is written in the first peson, and it’s blunt and to the point. There is no holding back on descriptions of the deaths, although these are not overdone – he describes his actions in a very matter-of-fact way, in the same way you would describe something far more mundane.

There are no long descriptions, and no extra bits.. the story is simply presented before you. It’s not the kind of book that I would normally pick up, and yet it had me hooked from the beginning. I found myself completely caught up with this character, and those around him, and I couldn’t let go of the book until I knew the final outcome. That reaction, I have to say, took me completely by surprise!

If you read similar books, this one is definitely worth a look. If you don’t, but you’d like to try something a little different, you may also surprise yourself!

“Pure Unadulterated Badassery” is how I was warned Wanted would be. To tell the truth,

“Pure Unadulterated Badassery” is how I was warned Wanted would be. To tell the truth, I wasn’t ready. This movie is definitely more of a ride than any I’ve seen this summer. Indiana Jones wishes he was still as cool as Fox (Jolie). If you come to the theater expecting nothing more than a thrill, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised, this is actually well written.

OK, so the plot is basically the Matrix part 4. Hot woman brings man into a world different than his own, where he will sink or swim. Then add the cool special effects, and you’ve got yourself a movie right? Director Timur Bekmambetov has a bunch of tricks up his sleeve that may or may not have been taken from the graphic novel. I have purist friends who don’t even approve of V for Vendetta, a movie I thought no one could dislike. This sparks an interesting debate to those who are fans of the novels. Can a movie capture what the pages of a glorified comic can? Or is it even simpler. Are we witnessing the great heists of intellectual property, merely signed over to studios for profit? Whatever the case, Wanted is still pretty fun to watch…

McAvoy’s voice over is one of the few elements of the movie I disliked. Just like the movie Choke, the Chuck Palahniuk I ceremoniously fell asleep during at Sundance, I found it funny at first, and intrusive later. McAvoy’s American accent is hilarious, but the voice over becomes unnecessary as the guns do most of the talking. Indeed, while Angelina receives the male gaze, she doesn’t talk much. Timur probably thought her eyes were seductive enough (he’s right) and words would fall short. No matter how commercial Jolie has become, let’s all remember she has an Oscar, and should be treated with respect.

Morgan Freeman can’t seem to get enough of this type of story. He serves as Batman’s loyal techie, and here he plays an under boss. The parallels to the Matrix are apparent, but there is a little Gotham in Wanted too. Last summer they filmed The Dark Knight in Chicago (setting of Wanted), The Fraternity has a lair, and McAvoy does a little training stint reminiscent of Liam Neeson and Christian Bale. Freeman is also attached to one of the best voice overs of all time, The Shawshank Redemption.

The voice over is a small hang up I have with a really entertaining movie. I wasn’t thinking about it until after, when I realized it was completely abandoned for a better plot than I expected. Writers Michael Brandt, Derek Haas, and Chris Morgan made a great screenplay. I do wonder however how much is theirs, and how much is Mark Millar’s the creator of the comic miniseries.

If you want to see the nude rump of Angelina Jolie, or maybe even a good movie, check out Wanted, a solid time at the movies.

***This was the first movie I saw in LA. I visited the Arc Light theater on Sunset Boulevard. I visited with only a recommendation, so I walked in the wrong entrance (naturally) and stood around looking for a ticket vendor. The place is MASSIVE. When you walk in the proper entrance, us country folk that are used to multiplexes will notice the difference immediately. A cafe greats anyone with time to kill or the need for a drink. Their help desk is called “Guest Services” rather than “Information Desk”. The lines form beneath the massive movie board, rotating and actually showing which movies are playing in which theater. This makes all the difference you see because Arc Light has one very famous theater called “The Dome”. Check specs out here. So I buy my ticket, and they actually ask me where I want to sit. This is an assigned seating theater, and I pick out a nice center of the theater seat. The tickets are printed (custom, like a trip to broadway) and I walk down to my theater.

I’m greeted by no less than 3 ushers, pleasantly smiling and asking if I need assistance (I’m basically looking around in awe) until I arrive at Theater 6. An usher directs me to my seat and I notice something strange….my feet are on carpet! The chairs are actually comfortable! There is an arm rest that has a padded cushion! And the first row where you usually break your neck looking up? Has been moved back! There is not one bad seat in this theater. In addition my ears hear the soft classical music I’d be accustomed to at the Kennedy Center. Am I still in a movie theater? No, this is an art house, committed to preserving the art of film. An usher makes an announcement before the movie begins (no “20″ or gaudy commercials leading up to the preview) to shut off cell phones, and tries to get us riled up for the movie. Oh, and once the previews begin? NO ONE is allowed into the theater. That’s right, no one is allowed to walk into the theater after the previews begin. If you have to go to the bathroom you can get back in, but this is a little detail ArcLight has going for it.

If you are ever in LA call me, I’ll take you to the Arc Light. It’s an amazing place. My previous favorite theater was E Street Cinema, in Washington D.C. It’s intimate, and they show the kind of movies I would some day like to make. Arc Light is much in the same vein as far as commitment, but has a much bigger budget to wow audiences. I’m going to be very happy at the movies in LA

Let’s go ahead and lay down odds now for when we’ll see the first news report about some

Let’s go ahead and lay down odds now for when we’ll see the first news report about some idiot fourteen year old who was playing with his dad’s gun and shot up his friend because he thought he could curve the bullet and shoot around him. It’ll happen. It’s a sure thing.

I hadn’t even heard of this movie until a few weeks ago when a friend showed me the trailer, but I gotsta say, holy **** was that ****ing AWESOME! And not awesome in a “wow such a testament to beautiful filmmaking” way, but awesome in that “yeah kill him!” way that is very different yet just as satisfying. Contrary to what your douchebag friend who never got off his Kevin Smith kick says, it’s not a bad thing to enjoy movies who’s main function is to slap you in the face with smash ‘em up fight scenes and cool special effects.

In Wanted, James McAvoy plays Wesley Gibson, the loser inside all of us who’s resigned to spending the rest of his life taking crap from everyone around him. Of course, things take a turn for the awesome when Wesley meets the enigmatic Fox, played by Jolie, who tells him that his father belonged to a super secret guild of assassins, and that they’ve chosen him to hunt down his father’s killer. After that, it’s a rollercoaster ride as Wesley discovers the truth about his father, and the assassins who employed him.

I really don’t have anything bad to say about the movie. Solid acting. I hadn’t seen McAvoy in anything before and really enjoyed his performance. I think he’s probably one of the only actors around his age who could have pulled the roll off. If the movie had starred Tobey Maguire I’m pretty sure I would have hated it. For all those looking to jump on that train, Angelina Jolie shoots lots of guns and looks good doing it. Anyone who’s seen commercials for the movie knows that there’s a certain suspension of disbelief involved. I think a strike in the movie’s favor is that it hits you with an intense story, but so it won’t disappear up it’s own a**, levels things out with humor. And humor that’s actually funny, not that “someone dies and James McAvoy takes off his sunglasses and gives us that, ‘Looks like he’s having a bad day’,” crap we see so much these days.

One knock against the movie is some of it’s backstory. They explain where the Fraternity, as it’s called, comes from and how they choose their targets. Some of this will make you cock your eyebrow a bit. It shouldn’t take you out of things too much.

Go check this one out in the theaters, and then buy the Blu-Ray and watch it over and over again on your awesome Bose soundsystem until your friends don’t come around anymore. For as much as I’ve gushed about this movie, I can’t give it a completely perfect score because that’s reserved only for movies like The Departed and There Will Be Blood, but it hits right up there. Make sure to stay through the end of the credits. In a hidden scene, Wesley is met by Tony Stark, who tells him that he and some friends are putting a special team together. Fantastic.

8 out of 10 stars
