Most watchers had their ideas of what it means to be disabled and what can be acheived by people with disabilities, challenged by some remarkable athletes who jut happened to have disabilities.

In a similar vein, but not in a sporting arena the following videos challenge commonly held ideas about what can’t be done if you have a physical disability.

In the first video, we see Dergin Tokmak dancing on crutches. Dergin contracted polio when 1 year old. Poliomyelitis is a virus that attacks the nerves that control your muscles. In Dergin’s case, he lost the control of his left leg and some of the control of his right. Always a survivor, Dergin learned to walk on his hands. Here he demonstrates what he can do on crutches.

In this second video, we see Aaron “Wheelz” Fotheringham land the world’s first double backflip on a wheelchair on August 26, 2010. Fotheringham has Spina Bifida; he has used a wheelchair since the age of three and although he used crutches early on, he has been a wheelchair user fulltime since the age of eight. He would watch his brother riding his BMX at the skate park, and one day his brother told him that he should try riding his chair in the park. Aaron later noted that “I did, and I was hooked”

Watching these guys reminds me that life is what you make it; we really do get out what of life what we put in.
