I’m fresh back from seeing Spencer Parker perform in Leeds at Wire club for the night Organic.

I’m fresh back from seeing Spencer Parker perform in Leeds at Wire club for the night Organic. Great little venue with alcoves to sit in, low ceiling, friendly staff, intimate dance floor and a Function One sound system!

Anyways got me think about the art of DJing, and how so many guys stand there motionless and staring at their controls, may as well be in their bedroom. Spencer Parker on the oher hand, seriously rocked it… jacking around, smiling and clapping with the crowd, working the controls like he really felt it, and along with a top notch selection of tunes, his personality alone got the crowd really involved.

So what makes a good DJ … well coincidently before i’d gone to lastnite gig i was looking up Derrick May, after a chance meeting with him at ADE early this month – what a guy!, and he had this blog post

I couldnt agree more with this stuff, as I take my first steps back into performing again, I’ve really had to think about it. Just last week i was playing 3hr set at Digital- Newcastle, while Eric Prydz was in the main room. Initially i was trying to drop some girl friendly disco and even some Calvin Harris to keep the girls dancing, and really it wasnt me… so after an hour or so jus started twatting it out in my own deep techy style, bit of Audiojack, Spencer Parker, S.N.U.S, Nick Curly, Timo Mass, Click & Zoom stuff n loops of their tracks new and old, my own custom loops and layer sections, adding effect sucj as beat repeat.. and i was loving it, bouncing about and this worked way better.. guys coming up demanding know what track I was playing, girls giving me that little cheeky look…

To me dispite all the technology arguments the ball of the matter is people are there to party! no one really, apart from the geeks, care what format the music is in. If it sounds good it is good. Period! You have to enjoy it for the party to enjoy it, by all means vibe off them but you have to play what you enjoy and take them on YOUR journey, thats why theyre theyre to see you… interact with the crowd, show them your enjoying it too.

So to summarise the key point to being a DJ

a) Enjoying what you play

b) Tune selection

c) Enjoying what your playing

D) Journey

d) Bringin life to the party

E) Hav I mentioned this before… Enjoying what you play and SHOW it!

Beat matching is over, technology now allow us to create and focus on the party! Do yourself an favour if your a budding DJ, check out Spencer Parker, Derrick May, Andrew Weatheral, Lee Burriage, and the other innovators, these guys rock a party, cause they have a party too …

Hopefully Click & Zoom will be joining that list real soon!!

There’s always reason to be excited when Derrick May is around!

If you caught his first session for BBC 6 Mix – back in July – you’ll know what this is about. If not – this is Derrick May at his most intimate. Sounding ever so present in your front room playing an awe inspiring selection of some of his favourite records – past and present!

Ranging from Jazz to Tech through House and Ambient electronica this is as much for your head as it is for your feet, and it shows a man who has music oozing through his pores.

For want of a better expression – it’s an education……..again!

The Derrick May BBC 6 Mix Session – dating back to 25th. July 2009 and posted on Space Dust

The Derrick May BBC 6 Mix Session – dating back to 25th. July 2009 and posted on Space Dust – is one of the few mixes I keep going back to.

For starters it contains a blinding selection of tracks – as picked by Derrick – and secondly the way it’s mixed, and cut-up, is the work of a proper showman who knows how keep people on their toes.

One of the main reasons I’ve kept going back has been because of – Greg Gow’s – “The Bridge” – which was the closing track of the mix. Since then Derrick and his Transmat label has certainly kept people on their toes, and the wait for this to come out has been gruelling.

It comes as part of his “Pilgrimage E.P”, and is backed with “Black Sun”, but all eyes are on “The Bridge (Late Night Grand River Mix)“, which ebbs and flows effortlessly in a lush kind of way, and once those “Strings Of Life”-inspired strings comes in – your hairs will raise – promise!

One of those I’ll-just-drive-to-the-East-Coast-to-pick-up-the-milk-tracks!

Stellar!

Few cities in the world can claim to have produced as many legends as Detroit.

From Motown through to todays Techno stars – Detroit has consistently drummed out untouchable talent much to the envy of many other cities. Over the last two decades its producer/DJ roster has mostly consisted of the likes of Derrick May, Juan Atklins, Underground Resistance, Jeff Mills and Carl Craig aka 69 (aka a tons of other pesudonyms) flying the steely soundscapes of Motor City.

Detroits fascination with vinyl seems never ending despite the fact the rest of the world having turned mostly digital. Above brigade swears by the black stuff, and insists of having 1210’s installed when playing.

Carl Craig – has just released an extreeeemely limited edition box set on vinyl only entitled – “The Legendary Adventures Of A Filter King” – which comes packed in 5 x 12″ on coloured vinyl containing 69 classics and some unreleased mixes. In fact – the box is so limited it’s only been pressed in 400 copies for the world with mastering by D&M Berlin.

If you have money to burn – the set will part you with nothing less than 125,- UK Pounds, but for the time being you can sample some tastes in shape of the unreleased track – “Poi Et Pas” – and a the classic 69 track – “Ladies & Gentlemen”.

As usual – Detroit doesn’t do things by halves!

I remarked that the next logical step would be for the machines to play you.

He nodded: “Yes. Not all machines have this consciousness, however. Some machines are just limited to one piece of work, but complex machines…”

Kraftwerk’s quest for union between man and machine may appear corny at first. When I heard Trans-Europe Express, I wasn’t sure how to take it. Are these guys serious? Is it tongue-in-cheek? The more you watch and listen, the more you’ll come to realize that they are completely serious. And completely awesome.

This performance of “The Robots” is from Italy but apparently was broadcast on Soviet TV. Note the clones of the band members watching from the front row. Did they pay for those seats? In later performances, actual robotic versions of the band members would “perform” this song, and their human counterparts were nowhere to be seen. It didn’t stop the crowd from cheering.

If this isn’t bizarre enough yet, consider the impact this band of white German nerds made on the urban dance music of Detroit. Afrika Bambaataa and Derrick May, for example, pushed Kraftwerk hard. (May has stated in interview that he first heard Kraftwerk and Funkadelic on the same day!) You’ll hear samples pop up all over the place once you can recognize them. How can something so square be so funky?

“The Model” is easily one of my favorite Kraftwerk tracks. These are some of their finest lyrics. “It only takes a camera to change her mind”…

A rare recording from Bremen radio, 1971. This is the fleeting lineup that included Michael Rother & Klaus Dinger (who would soon depart to form NEU!), but not Ralf Hütter, who was on hiatus to complete his studies. It offers a glimpse into the early history of the band. This is the tail-end of their krautrock days and fits in more closely with their first 3 records (which the band has essentially disowned). I think you’ll agree that this rocks surprisingly hard:

Kraftwerk are notoriously private and reserved. There’s not a lot of information from the inside, and they famously turned down offers to work with Elton John, David Bowie and Michael Jackson. Today, they’re still performing and, although they aren’t releasing much in the way of new music, they can put on one hell of a show. This performance of “Radioactivity” is from 2009, Manchester. In the beginning, the song was about radio transmission. Over the years, it’s morphed into a darker statement about the dangers of radioactivity. Put on your 3D glasses… now.

Come ho fatto a vivere finora?

This documentary on the creation of Techno music changed my musical opinion dramatically. Before, i thought Techno was something for people that had no musical taste, took too many pills and didn’t seem to notice that the beats hadn’t changed for six to seven hours. Afterwards, i was forced into a deeper appreciation for the music it’s history and the feeling that it invokes upon a dance floor. What shocked me was the close association with black music it has particularly as an alternative to Hip Hop. It was created by young kids in Detroit in the mid-80’s during the aftermath of the white flight from the city. These men Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson created timeless classics such as ‘Strings of Life’ and ‘Big Fun’, the effect of these productions are still being felt today from Detroit to Techno’s new home in Berlin. This film is an absolute masterpiece and gets the TFC seal of approval.

If you like your legends – then this is a fantastic opportunity to get into the mind of one Mr

If you like your legends – then this is a fantastic opportunity to get into the mind of one Mr. Derrick May.

Despite not having produced any real material for decades Detroit legend – Derrick May – is still very much a force to be reckoned with. A true master of technicality along the same lines as Jeff Mills – Derrick May – have for decades pushed the sounds of the spiritual home of Techno – Detroit.

Renowned for being able to actually walk out in the middle of a set, to never return, if the crowd isn’t into his stuff – or if some feline is far more interesting – stories of Derrick May are many as only connected to true legends.

Thankfully he didn’t walk out on his 6 Mix session for BBC Radio 1, and this 2 hour session, broadcast 25th. July 2009, gives you a real interesting look into the musical mind of Derrick May in which he not only introduces you to the Detroit concept of Hi-Tek Soul, but equally throws in Jazz, Funk, Chill and what else before ending up in a straight forward club set.

Kicking off procedings with legend – Miles Davies – you can of course ask yourself………is Derrick May the Miles Davies of true Techno ?

Felix da Housecat, Dominik Eulberg, Kevin Saunderson, Kenny Larkin, Stacey Pullen, Derrick May, Goldie en onze eigen Soul Migrantz.

Need I say more?

Mooi!!!!
