Hi All,

As I have already mentioned, I have recently managed to land myself a coveted position working for a fashion imports company in the city, trying to fund my not too shabby (but not as glamorous as I’d like) lifestyle and so, thought you would like to know a bit more about what it is that I actually do. This post will hopefully give you an insight into my daily responsibilities as a design assistant where I work with another two fashion-obsessed girls and what goes on behind the scenes in the notoriously fierce fashion industry.

Many people have the pre-misconception that a job in fashion will somewhat resemble that of Andy’s job in The Devil wears Prada; an opulent office setting, access to an array of beautiful clothes and freebies and a chance to hobnob with the fashion elite. Although for some fortunate individuals out there this may be true (god damn you!), a job in fashion is often a lot less glamorous that you imagine, especially starting out from the bottom.

‘Design Assistant’ is an illustrious term which has different meanings within different companies. I wish I could say that my job description allows me to spend my days carelessly wandering around local shops and boutiques looking for hidden gems and people watching from behind a cafe window, whilst blogging away ‘til my heart is content, but sadly, it would be a lie. In my current role it means tackling the less than desirable tasks that no one else wants to do and although it does have its perks, in reality I am less the lady of leisure and more the skivvy on speed dial – and so, I intend to share with you the up and downsides to being a fashion design assistant.

A brief outline of my duties and responsibilities include; organising, photographing and cataloguing samples, assisting design and buying teams, general administrative duties and merchandising showrooms and new product.

Personally, I think that we design assistants are akin to Fashion Ninja’s; we float around the building helping out wherever required. Unlike anyone else, we work with several different departments on a daily basis from the buying and sourcing teams to the warehouse guys and carry out a range of duties and so, we get to speak to a variety of different people and often get to know about the latest scandal, even the most classified information. Every now and then we will get sent on an adventure which is always last minute and often touch and go, right down to the last minute; whether it is to chase the courier with an important parcel which has missed collection and needs to be sent urgently to a well-known celebrity or to locate a missing suitcase which has been left ‘somewhere’ in a hotel in New York. Just when you think you have seen it all, something crazy will come along and remind you why design assistants need to be prepared for anything and everything.

Some of my personal highlights of the job; working with truly creative and passionate individuals who are hungry to succeed in their own discipline, gaining a better understanding of how processes work within a fashion business and seeing first-hand just how each decision can impact upon the whole company, being involved in creating names and coming up with ideas for new collections and brands, witnessing a new brand come to life from conception right through to seeing the physical samples being exhibited in a showroom, being able to see the latest development in clothing from all over the world, assisting with photo shoots and exhibitions and of course getting freebies, although so far this has only included pens and sweets… Where are all the free clothes?!

Some of the not so exciting aspects of the job; being indispensable also means being contactable at all times – by phone, email, radio – there is nowhere to hide and you are often on your feet the whole day, getting tedious tasks that feel near impossible – like finding a particular fabric swatch in amongst the thousands of swatches which occupy the swatch library and finally, being at the bottom of the food chain so to speak makes you an easy target – often the design assistants get the blame when things go wrong – I have definitely grown a thicker skin through working in this job and have found that sometimes it is easier to accept responsibility for something and move on, even if you know you were not to blame rather than completely denying all knowledge as things tend to come back around to being the fault of the design assistants (sob! It’s a hard knock life).

For anyone planning to start a career in fashion and considering becoming a design assistant, the following attributes are crucial and will see you far; being energetic and highly motivated as you tend to be on your feet all day running around, although on the bright side, it is like being paid to keep fit … AND you get to work off those extra calories from all the sweets and treats left around the office which you can’t resist, having an excellent photographic memory is advantageous so that when your boss parades a photograph in front of your face and asks you to go find the sample which hasn’t been seen for the last year, you know exactly where to locate it and finally, and arguable most importantly – you need to be able to take everything in jest, at the end of the day, part of your job role (although you may not know it) is accepting the blame for anything and everything that goes wrong, hey… welcome to being a design assistant!!

It’s difficult to find the Old 505 Theatre (505/342 Elizabeth St, Surry Hills). Certainly, it’s a labyrinth five floors up, but well worth the effort to see We Do Not Unhappen’s latest production of Rob Hayes’ A Butcher of Distinction.

Recently orphaned fraternal twins, Hugo and Hartley, have come to London to set their father’s affairs in order and salvage part of the lost family estate. The play is set in the basement of a seedy London tavern – beautifully crafted here with pieces of junk odds and ends crammed into every knock and cranny. They hail from an old aristocratic family, raised in isolation, having never been to the city before, so this new environment is not one they’re comfortable with. They may be snobs but they also possess a naivety which is charming at times: ‘I thought London was an island’ Hugo states at one point. Not long after are they disturbed from their task by Teddy, a brash and violent man who claims to own the pub. Teddy demands they tell him where their father is. He is distressed to discover that the twins’ father has committed suicide … but mostly because he owed him something in the order of 250,000 pounds. Not to worry though, there are other ways that the boys can pay off the debt, though these ways are unsavoury. Yet Teddy may not be as in control of the situation as he might think.

Liam Nunan as Hugo and Heath Ivey-Law as Hartley

Hayes’ script is an absolute delight. The interplay between the brothers during the first act is hilarious, but this is balanced against some truly touching moments of sibling love as they cope with the loss of their father and then the sordid world that Teddy plunges them into. The play becomes increasingly darker in tone through the third act and finally descends into shocking brutality … although we wouldn’t want to spoil the twist. Hayes has cleverly weaved these very different tones together. Textually the play is very rich and there are a lot of themes at work. Ideas of family relations and how siblings uniquely deal with a close family loss is central to the two main characters, as are darker themes of ritual and paganism. This is evident in the final act and a theme which director James Dalton has used to make sense of the unexpected shift. However, upon leaving the show one gets the feeling that the play just might be about power. When Teddy first arrives, his brash nature, coupled with the boys’ naivety is enough to give him control over the situation. However as the final act unveils it becomes apparent that power is a fragile thing and can exist in the strangest of places as long as it is believed. A different mask, a different identity, can make the same person a completely different creature, and it’s this that makes the play, and its characters, so wonderfully dangerous.

Paul Hooper as Teddy

The casting choices were simply excellent. Heath Ivey-Law played the ‘older by ten minutes’ twin and really held his own from start to finish. Tall and classically handsome, Ivey-Law gave us a wonderful sense of the naïve snobbery that Hayes envisaged, which was particularly prevalent in the opening scene. He was authoritative without pulling focus and had impeccable comic timing. Especially moving was the connection he made with his brother. It’s a difficult thing to fake, and sometimes even professionals can’t pull it off. It takes careful listening on the actor’s part, and Ivey-Law certainly did the work.

Liam Nunan matched Ivey-Law’s abilities whilst remaining true to the character. Nunan had fantastic comic timing and worked well within the sibling relationship. He brought to life the curiosity of a slightly younger brother, wanting to see what had always been hidden from him – the question on his lips: “what else is there?” Of note was his moving performance in the third act. Without giving too much away, he had the audience hanging on his every breath, producing a genuine emotional connection to the text. It was powerful stuff.

Paul Hooper as the ‘pimp’ Teddy was in a different class altogether. Hooper showed us that it is actually possible for a sleazy character to be nuanced – he commanded the stage constantly and used his superior physical and vocal range. Particularly impressive was his conviction of character. It’s a dark scary world in the streets of London, and Hooper looked as if he had been in the back allies all his life.

For this show it may help for the pacing in act one to be slowed a tad. The production can certainly afford to be a little bit longer, especially if it helps the audience ease into the story. Also, whilst the space undoubtedly makes this difficult, there is a risk that the actors end up being in profile a lot, yet this is simply a question of awareness. Overall, the cast should be more than commended for their fantastic efforts. They certainly deserved their encore.

The Old 505 Theatre offers up a very intimate space and Dalton does an excellent job of utilizing it. The play itself is very new, receiving its first performance in England only in 2011 so this is an excellent opportunity to get along and see a fresh piece of theatre, skilfully performed, which will both shock and delight.

A Butcher of Distinction is playing at the Old 505 Theatre until the 26th of May. Tickets $16.50 – $26.50. For more details and bookings see:

With college, internships, and accepting a small position that may not be what we hoped for.

Now that we know what college/university to attend, let’s explore how to put our degree to good use through the top ten entry level positions.

1. Here’s a grueling word us fashion people know too well: Interns!

Estimated Salary (in NYC): Unpaid, transportation and lunch compensated.

Reasons why: If you work your ass off hard enough, you could land yourself a position at the company. It also allows you to brush up on your skills and to see how the business operates. If you hate the internship, most likely you won’t like the career you’ve chosen, so, you can get out now without the work agreement and ugly contract.

2. Assistant Buyer

Estimated Salary (in NYC): $47,000

Reasons why: Buyers use their sense of style and knowledge of trends to anticipate the kinds of gear people will be lining up to cop next season. You are putting your fashion critical thinking skills to good use and if you land this position in a large store, with the right energy, you will have a good sell-through rate, and can make boatloads of money.

3. Design Assistant

Estimated Salary (in NYC): $42,000

Reasons why: You will get a firsthand look at new fabrics, get to travel to a lot of shows, factories, and even fashion week! It’s a lot of work, but it’s extremely rewarding in the end.

4. PR/ Advertising Coordinator

Estimated Salary (in NYC): $38,000

Reasons why: You will get to track the success of campaigns via media tracking, build lists of contacts to pitch ideas and client projects to, write press releases, media packets, and other copy. You can show off your creative intellect and fashion abilities.

5. Marketing/ Social Media Assistant

Estimated Salary (in NYC): $30,000

Reasons why: If you have a passion for twitter and tumblr, you can utilize what you love to make money and circulate the names of the companies’ brands and clients.

6. Personal Assistant

Estimated Salary (in NYC): $27,000

Reasons why: Your job is to be highly organized, efficient, field calls, meetings, and be extremely punctual. You’ll probably start off getting paid in free swag with up-and-coming designers, but if you’re really good — or your boss’s career takes off — you can start making the big bucks.

7. Editorial Assistant

Estimated Salary (in NYC): $28,000

Reasons why: At least here, the devil wears Prada. you will get to pore over copy and look out for small details like typos, punctuation errors, and fact-checking. You might even get a couple of bylines for online articles or blurbs in the magazine.

8. Junior Visual Merchandiser

Estimated Salary (in NYC): $30,000

Reasons why: If you have a good eye for how to present things and put them together, this is the perfect career for you. Just be able to combine that creative mindset with a background in design, some mixed media art experience and a basic grasp of color theory. The picture below basically sums up what you’ll be doing:

9. Sales/Band Representative

Estimated Salary (in NYC): $59,000

Reasons why: First, the salary is not too bad which is always a plus. Sales representatives get a firsthand look at new samples at showrooms and meet with buyers from all over to get the clothes in stores. Also, they work on the marketing side of things and meet with editors and bloggers so they can preview new collections months before they hit stores.

10. Store Manager

Estimated Salary (in NYC): $40,000

Reasons why: If you ever thought of owning your own boutique, it would help to know how to run a store first. Working for a corporate chain or franchise not only gives you the experience of running a shop, it also helps you develop a bird’s-eye-view of how the industry operates. You’ll notice things like how Fall/Winter clothes arrive in late August and Spring/Summer clothes hit stores around January, you’ll witness firsthand the kind of things that are flying off the racks, and develop a knack for trends and what’s hot in the streets.

Its well past lunch time, you have hardly have 2 sips of your coffee in the morning before you had to rush to catch your bus and the customer is the typical type A.

Customers Rating system

Type C : She is sweet and generally knows what she exactly wants. Treats you like a human and is off within 45min of arriving.

Type B : She has an occasion to go to , an Indian cocktail party knows very well that we deal only in western wear and any Indian stuff would take a minimum of 5 weeks to get delivered but she has to wear it tommorow night. Will spend hours and hours before leaving announcing that we never had any good things.

Type A : The most dreaded of all, she will always order for the samples ( read issues related to samples on the last post http://lifeofadesignassistant.wordpress.com/2012/02/22/getting-ready/). Her arrival time is without fail the time you sit down for lunch. She has an occasion to go to the same day, will demand the designer to be there at all times. Will spend a minimum of 3-4 hrs trying to figure out what to get.

Unfortunetly the Type A customer is often a friend of the designer or someone who shops with us every fortnight or pays really well, so dealing with them with upmost attention and care is most important.

The designer somehow never gets how to sell a product and in order to impress the type A customer she often sells off important sample pieces claiming later that it was all our idea and we have to re-make the samples exactly the way it was within a week.

The worst of the worst are TYPE O.

Type O : They are childhood friends and family of the designer who she is not in touch with any more but they stick to her like glue because of her fame. They are terrible, they want huge discounts sometimes demanding upto 85% , they place an order and want the designer herself to look over each top, blouse, dress, stole. This customer will go mad if the color is even a slight shade lighter or if there is even the tinniest of issue. For the price she is paying it is better she shops at a street market.

By the time the customer leaves its way past your office time, your hungry and irritated… and its just the end of one day of many…..

Tidying up the studio, we rush from one place to another bringing out the stock we didn’t have

Tidying up the studio, we rush from one place to another bringing out the stock we didn’t have. “She is coming”

A fashion studio of any designer is his or her reflection. It should showcase the design sensibility of the designer while focusing on the garments.

Most ‘famous’ designers have huge studios, elaborately decorated that you feel your in a different universe all together a younger designer will probably be working out of his or her home. By young it means the brand not older than a decade, the designer however in mid 40′s . (as opposed to early 30′s that the media reports.)

When your work space and your retail segment is all but one room it does tend to get a LOT messy. With coffee mugs and papers and laptops all thrown in together on one small round table surrounded by 3 racks of clothes and a sofa filled with piles of out-dated collections… Cleaning this up within 10 min of the ‘call’ seems next to impossible.

When our business card reads ‘meeting by appointment only’ it means CALL US ATLEAST A DAY BEFORE YOU COME NOT WHEN YOUR PARKING THE CAR.

Most customers ignore the ‘appointment’ part and just land in the studio or give us a 10 minute warning, thus begins the battle of cleaning.

The designer rushes to get changed into something appropriate as opposed to the pajamas she was still wearing ( Ah, the benefits of working from home ). While us the assistants try to make this garbage dump ‘presentable’. We drape the sofa along with its piles of mess with the new collection Hand-printed Silk adding on top of it the inspiration , some swatches that we were working on , new jewelry ideas, making the then messy sofa into an inspiration corner.

The racks comes next we quickly arrange all clothes color wise from light to dark realizing a little to late that on all racks only samples hang.

Samples are the garments that were used on the ramp and are our refrance point for everything. They are the holy grail, selling them is a terrible sin with a fate worse than death…

A customer can at any point of time place an order by looking at the sample and demanding an exact copy. While we try our very best to create the same thing again it is a next to impossible task.

Each designer garment is always a work of art you can not ask Da Vinci to re-create Mona Lisa eactly the same way , even if he does, there will be a diffrence. Because of this we avoid taking orders on samples and try to sell ready stock.

The only drawback is…we never have ready stock. With production so tight and on going overseas orders, making stock for the studio is a possibility that doesn’t exist.

Your first day will be no doubt an eventful one, there will be moments of realisation and re-evaluation.

Being a graduate from one of the most premier colleges in the country you will be asked various questions and inputs on the next collection, slowly you will learn you are not asked YOUR opinion but rather you have to predict what the designer is thinking and then present it back to her on a bronze platter, after all SHE is the designer, its her call to up the design and make it perfect.

Researching the designer before hand is always a good idea but you can never know her mindset. You were known in your college as the girl who makes chic designs appropriate for someone in her 20′s, little did you know your job is required to make a designs for either a 40something size Zero or a XXXL for a market which you had no idea existed.

Willingness to learn and enthusiasm to prove yourself takes you a long way, be ready to fight girl, the war has just began!!

It’s always difficult to decide what to wear to an interview with the country’s top designer, do you

It’s always difficult to decide what to wear to an interview with the country’s top designer, do you wear ‘formal’? after all it is an interview, but on the same page it is an interview at a design house, you don’t want to end up looking frumpy!

I decided on a casual flattering shirt with denim, formal enough to say I have given this a thought and trendy enough to make the other person perceive you as ‘in’ trend.

Right out of college to get a good job or rather a dream job is just that,.. a dream, you work at an export house your pay package is good, but you learn nothing and end up with just a big whole cycle of having a desk job. If you go into retail, the pay is ok but there is absolutely no growth or value addition that you can do ,your highlights of the day would be to get to change the color of a button!

Ah, the pleasures of working with a designer right out of college is counted as a huge achievement, specially if it’s an established or emerging designer, true the pay is less than what you spend in a week, but the learning and the variety of work that one does compensates for all that.

The Interview is casual, you are judged more on your personality than your work. confidence and selling yourself is the key to any interview! A few basic questions about you, your family, the obvious question of what you wish to do in life , the next thing you know you’re in!

You may have applied for the post of a junior designer but in the end you will realise you are more of a detachable assistant…
