Wow! I didn’t even know that something like this existed. I recently purchase this great GI Joe rice bowl made by toy giant Takara on eBay. I absolutely love the manga style of some of my favorite Joes: Duke, Scarlett, and Flint. But wait, check out the Joe emblem and slogan on the back of the bowl, “Fight, Friendship, Freedom”. This makes me think that after a long day of whipping Cobra’s tail, Shipwreck, Snake Eyes, and Bazooka put away their grudges with their foes and sit down to share some hot sake with Destro and the gang. “Teamwork” may have been a better translation than “Friendship” and I’m sure that’s what they were going for, but “Friendship” sounds so cute and fuzzy. I’m just glad a waving cat with a pink bow didn’t show up in the picture of the hovercraft. Hello Kitty… I mean Yo Joe!

Respect. A word often thrown around, especially by Ali G.  This summer’s action flick “G.I. Joe” didn’t respect the sanctity of the classic G.I. Joe comic, making Ripcord a wise-cracking black guy and of course, the inexcusable creation of a love story between Baroness and Duke.  Fortunately, on “The Blue Album”, the Savanna, Georgia  metal outfit Baroness has shown complete respect for the history of not only metal, but also giving nods to post-punk, prog, hardcore, and even math rock. (On a side note, wouldn’t Destro be a much better name for a metal band? Just saying…)

For starters, this flawlessly organized album is book-ended by “Bullhead’s Psalm” and “Bullhead’s Lament”, both mysterious, spacey instrumentals that sound similar to Metalica’s “Nothing Else Matters”.  In the opener, this homage to metal Gods from times of yore soon builds into a double guitar lead lick that pierces through the classic sound, proclaiming that Baroness has arrived: you better recognize. This intricate guitar playing fills the album from start to finish, sounding like Dream Theater, minus the self-indulgence.  The goal of this band is not to impress; they want to catch you off guard, kicking you in the balls just when you think they are taking a rest.

When “Bullhead’s Psalm” comes to an eerie end,  a ripping guitar riff blasts through the speakers, and John Baizley’s grizzled voice screams out, sounding like Ian MacKaye with a cold, circa Fugazi days (on “A Horse Called Golgotha” you my have flashbacks to the early 90s, listening to “In On the Kill Taker”).    Despite its hardcore leanings, it still stays rooted in the type of classic metal that would make Tony Iommi blush.  Song after song will have your head bobbing uncontrollably. With music this damn good, who gives a shit about lyrics?

The grippingly thrash continues for most of the album, but the band is somehow able to steady the raging storm of metal chaos, finding calmer waters in borderline ballads like “Steel that Sleeps in the Eye” and “Black Powder Orchard”.  On the latter, the band’s southern roots can be heard, with it sounding like something you might hear on an Allman Brother’s album. “O’er Hell and Hide” starts with an enchanting serenade that will lead you into a sleepy listlessness due to its calming acoustic guitar artistry. 40 seconds into the song, when you’re on the verge of sweet dreams, the nightmare arrives with the band breaking into a grinding post-punk sludge tour. Amidst the chaos, a muffled voice can be heard talking in monotone, sounding almost like a metal Slint. Yes. I said it. A metal version of Slint. I think I just squirted a little pre-cum. 

 I may be making this album sound like a compilation of covers, but that assessment would be completely off-base.  Despite the album’s wide spectrum of influences, there is never a doubt of who you are listening to: Baroness mother fucker. This is one of the most focused albums I’ve heard all year, which is pretty impressive considering the wide array of influences the band draws upon.  The only thing that might be better than Baroness’s “Blue Album” may be a stroll through the record collection that inspired this all-encompassing metal sound.

G.I. Joe : The 25th Anniversary Edition | Cobra — Because heroes are boring! ‘Nuff said!!!

I didn’t watch GI Joe: Rise of Cobra when it came out. One reason is that the critics love it which would usually mean I’m going to be disappointed, the other is the GI Joe that I remember do not use tech suits to enhance their physical strength so after seeing the trailer, my excitement lessened.

While I didn’t want to watch it in the cinemas, I did want to watch it someday. I was curious about the attention the baroness is getting especially after Alodia Gosiengfiao cosplayed her. The baroness back in the old GI Joe didn’t strike me as interesting. It was always about Cobra Commander and Destro. Baroness was like the token girl villain. Another thing that I wanted to see is why a lot of my friends are saying that Stormshadow was cooler than Snake Eyes. Back in the old animated series, everyone wanted to be Snake Eyes.

Well, after 3-4 months the DVD is out I was able to watch the movie with a little help of that dude by the bay.

What do I think? Well, if Michael Bay jizz his pants whenever he sees battleships, carriers and tanks, then Stephen Sommers jizz his pants on futuristic weaponry.

As LatinoReview.com stated, the story was pretty much like Xmen 1. Duke was protecting some warheads and was attacked by some high tech terrorist. Duke was saved by another group of High Tech Military. Duke joins the High Tech Military. The important warhead was  taken from his custody.  Duke saves the day in the end. Oh and he gets his girlfriend back in the end too. Pretty much like X-men 1 to me.

The Paris chase was strange too. After arming the warheads, couldn’t the high tech terrorist group get a decent mode of transportation to the Eiffel Tower? Actually, now that I think about it, they were able to build a high tech undersea base up in north pole but they couldn’t have armed the warheads themselves? Okay, now that I’ve think about it further, if they just armed the freaking warheads themselves, Duke nor the Joes wouldn’t have been able to stop them.

The part where the Joes were tricked in to re-activating the tracker on the warheads was cool until you realize that how can a high tech base like the Pit not have any sort of signals being transmitted from the base to the outside world.

Actually, with all the high tech gadgets they have on the base, they had the worst alarms in the world. The attack was in now way stealthy. Those were freaking drills that pierced the walls of the base and you’re telling me that they didn’t have any form of sensors?

And this movie was supposed to make more sense than Transformers 2? I don’t think so.

I will be up front with this movie. I did not grow up with G.I. Joe nor do I know any of the characters. Although, over time I have figured out their names, their ideals and come to my own conclusions. Also, I had no expectations when watching this movie. I went in believing that it was a stinker which is the reason I never saw it in theaters. Now, I bring you my full review of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

The movie starts out in 15th century France where they punish one of the clan members of the Scottish McCullen clan. He is punished for selling weapons to France’s enemy and he must wear an iron mask straight from the casting fire for the remainder of his life. He is now known to the people as Destro, destroyers of kingdoms. This is important information because in the not too distant future on of his ascendents, James McCullen(played by Christopher Eccleston), is now a weapons manufacturer selling weapons to the United States. When the Army is transporting the newest weapon from the manufacturer they are attacked by an unknown aircraft and soldiers that cannot be destroyed. After a somewhat Hollywood action segment The Joes, as they call themselves, intervene and help out our main characters that learn about the new covert operations regime.

Now, before I start berating this absolutely unbearabable piece of trash I want to showcase my initial thoughts of the film. If the characters weren’t live, but drawn like cartoons and this was a 20 minute television show then this would be a great movie. Otherwise, this movie isn’t terrible until someone starts talking. It was very funny to see how a lot of these great actors were able to portray such flamboyant cartoon characters so well. Let’s start with Channing Tatum who plays Duke. His acting was more robotic than Hayden Christiansen’s Anakin Skywalker. Everytime he either had a smart ass remark or sly one-liner I thought I was going to puke. Why doesn’t this man just go back to his tweeny bopper dance movies and leave action to people that can act better than he can. Now, Marlon Wayans is my least favorite of the Wayans family because he is just….not funny. I guess he was supposed to be the comic relief in this movie? His comedy and sly remarks towards Scarlet were so forced that it was funny because it was so stupid. Everyone acted decent except for the two main characters that we are made to believe are decorated war heroes which after 20 minutes I highly doubt. All they have are egos and what seems like basic boot camp training.

All in all I did not like this movie. It was such garbage with the stupid over the top action and poor acting. There is one thing, though, I believe that a sequel may be better than this one. Although G.I. Joe was utter trash of cinema, I think that a sequel might save it now that we understand where the characters come from and the cobra commander has been brought to light. Rent this or just wait for it to be shown in perpetuity on HBO soon. Do not buy this movie unless you have children under the age of six and can enjoy the crap that is filmed.

Giornata molto vivace e interessante quella che si è svolta tra sabato e domenica. Ben 4 le vittorie esterne. Partiamo con Fiorentina-Napoli, che ha visto i partenopei vincere in trasferta dopo un anno dall’ultima vittoria. Gli uomini di Mazzarri si sono imposti per 1-0 con gol di Maggio su assist di Denis nel finale. Il Napoli ha anche sbagliato un rigore con Quagliarella (ma bravo Frey a parare). La Fiorentina può recriminare su qualche episodio dubbio e su un paio di salvataggi sulla linea di porta. Altra vittoria esterna è quella della Juventus sul campo del Siena: decide Amauri, che devia di testa una punizione di Diego( schema ripetuto più volte quest’anno con esiti positivi); Siena quasi inesistente per tutta la gara. Colpaccio del Livorno del neo allenatore Cosmi. Battuta la Roma 1-0 con un gol (il primo) di Tavano con un bell’esterno che supera Doni. Nel posticipo il Milan supera con una doppietta di testa di Nesta un ottimo Chievo che era andato in vantaggio con Pinzi. Passiamo ora alle vittorie interne. Spettacolo e gol nella vittoria del Cagliari sul Genoa: grifoni in vantaggio con Mesto (punizione deviata da Dessena). Pari dei sardi a inizio ripresa con Biondini, poi Genoa ancora avanti con Floccari prima del nuovo pareggio del Cagliari su rigore con Nenè, ma nei minuti finali arriva la zampata di Lazzari per il definitivo 3-2. Vittoria di misura del Palermo contro l’Udinese: decide Bovo nel finale con un tiro al volo deviato da Zapata alle spalle di  Handanovic. Grande protagonista del match però è stato il portiere dei rosanero Sirigu che ha dato spettacolo con interventi da grande portiere. Per il capocannoniere Di Natale solo un palo. Continua il momento no della Lazio, sconfitta anche dal Bari per 2-0. Biancorossi in vantaggio con Barreto su ottimo lancio di Almiron, raddoppio con Meggiorini che su assist di Kutuzov brucia Muslera di sinistro. Vittoria importante invece per l’Atalanta che va a segno con Valdes su rigore, Tiribocchi e Peluso, Parma in gol con Paloschi. Per quanto riguarda gli anticipi di sabato non sbagliano né l’Inter nè la Sampdoria. I nerazzurri vincono contro il Catania grazie ai gol di Muntuari(cross sbagliato da centrocampo che finisce direttamente in rete) e di Wesley Sneider con una splendida punizione che passa sopra alla barriera e si insacca alle spalle di Campagnolo. Il Catania segna su un rigore non molto solare di Mascara. Nell’anticipo del pomeriggio di sabato, goleada della Samp sul malcapitato Bologna: in gol Pazzini (assist perfetto di Cassano), Mannini al volo di destro, Ziegler con un bel tiro da fuori di sinistro e ancora Mannini su altro splendido assist di Cassano. Per il Bologna gol della bandiera di Osvaldo rapido ad approfittare di un errore di Zauri. Di seguito la classifica:

Since I’ve just started doing this, I’ve started off with some classic mixes that most breakcore heads out there have probably heard.  Still though, I think they’ve all held up quite well and are still well worth listening to.  For people who are new to this music, these are some mixes you should really hear if you want to familiarize yourself with some of the classics.

10-24-09 C64 – Breakcore Jungle V.2     Download

This is a classic mix from the tail end of what I consider to be the best period for breakcore and it includes many key tracks.  There are a couple of the earliest Rotator tracks, one of the greatest raggacore tracks ever made IMO (Badman Time) and plenty of tracks that walk the fine line that used to exist between dark drum & bass and what would come to be known as breakcore.  Like some of the previous entries I’ve put up here, this is one of the most influentual mixes I can remember from when I got into this stuff.  Also, this marks the first release on C64’s Drosstik Records, which has since released three utterly essential compilation EP’s and a handful of CD’s.

Not sure where I found this one, but I could no longer track down the link.  So I went ahead and uploaded it and here it is.  Recordings of his live sets tend to be few and far between, so be sure to check it out.  In my opinion, this is second only to his Schizophrenia 3 set (as far as recorded ones go).  Very dark, heavy and just straight up rockin.  Also, check Abelcain’s website (linked below) for some free downloads he’s put up for public consumption.

10-22-09 Diskore – Extreme Electronics And Splintered Beats     Download

From 2003 and not exactly a rarity, but one of my favorites and certainly worth mentioning here.  This was one disc of the first Darkmatter release, with the other disc being a collection of tracks by Minion and Resurrector (check out the track “La Muerte” for something truly beautiful).  This mix explores what I think of as “industrial breakcore” and, like any truly great mix, it puts classics right alongside the latest tracks.  Very heavy on Praxis and related stuff that is more on the breakcore side of things, as well as the Hymen and Ant Zen style that is closer to pure industrial.  The mixing is aggressive and, for the most part, well executed.  Definitely a mix that opened my eyes to a lot of new music at the time and the one I would first recommend to anyone who is interested in this style of music.

10-21-09 Destro – Zod Mix 1     Side A / Side B

Extremely hard to find tape from 2001.  This is one of my all time favorites and I haven’t seen it online elsewhere, so I thought it fitting that I should kick things off with this one.  Rarely will you hear breakcore mixed this flawlessly.  Every track he plays in this is a classic and the flow of the mix is just perfect.  Please keep in mind this was recorded from tape several years ago and encoded at 128k because I didn’t know any better.

La super squadra G. I. Joe è una squadra speciale composta dai migliori soldati del mondo che entra in gioco quando le forze convenzionali falliscono. Per le sue missioni si serve della tecnologia spionistica e militare più avanzata. Quando l’ambiguo industriale McCullen ( Christopher Eccleston) minaccia il mondo con un’arma pericolosissima a base di nanotecnologia, il team entra in azione per fermarlo.

Spettacolare ed esplosiva questa pellicola firmata da Stephen Sommers, (regista dei primi due capitoli de La Mummia), e tratta dalla serie di fumetti, action figures e cartoni animati G.I. Joe, in voga tra gli anni 60 e gli anni 80.  Quello che si preannuncia come il primo capitolo di una saga, come si intuisce dal finale apertissimo e in chiara aria di sequel, si caratterizza per l’azione adrenalinica e per le scene mozzafiato, ambientate nelle location più svariate, dall’Egitto al centro di Parigi fino ai ghiacci polari. Gli effetti digitali sono potentissimi, come dimostra  la scena dello spettacolare inseguimento  per le strade di Parigi.

Passiamo ora alle note dolenti: la trama è abbastanza scarna, stringata e scontata: i due amici e soldati Duke (Channing Tatum) e Ripcord (Marlon Wayans) vengono arruolati in extremis in questo dream team diretto dal generale Hawk (Dennis Quaid) composto da supermen: il genio dell’informatica e della tecnologia, Breaker ( Said Taghmaoui), il ninja che non parla mai, Snake Eyes (Ray Park), Heavy Duty (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), esperto di armi, e da una superwoman,  Shana “Scarlett” O’Hara ( Rachel Nichols). La trama si basa su dei personaggi antitetici e sui loro rapporti, in primis quello tra Duke e Ana (Sienna Miller), la Baronessa, ex fidanzati ora in schieramenti opposti, e quello tra Snake Eyes e il ninja bianco. Storm Shadow ( Byung-hun Lee) nemici sin da bambini e protagonisti di sequenze di combattimento a dir poco spettacolari. C’è spazio per l’azione, ma c’è anche modo di analizzare i personaggi e le loro storie personali: così si scopre ad esempio come mai è finita la storia tra Duke e Ana, o cosa spinge McCullen, il futuro Destro,  alle sue azioni criminali.

Proseguiamo con il cast, decisamente variegato ma ben scelto, a partire dal protagonista, Duke, interpretato da Channing Tatum, il ballerino ribelle del primo Step Up, perfetto nel ruolo del bravo ragazzo dal cuore spezzato, deciso a tutto pur di portare a termine la missione e magari riconquistare la donna della sua vita; il simpaticissimo Ripcord, migliore amico di Duke, molto ironico e dalla battuta pronta, anche nei momenti più drammatici, interpretato da Marlon Wayans, membro della dinastia Wayans onnipresente nel cinema e nella tv made in USA, visto finora solo in ruoli demenziali come in Scary Movie, ma che qui dimostra di essere anche altro. Dennis Quaid è il perfetto generale Hawk, ma la vera sorpresa è Sienna Miller nei panni di Ana, donna cinica e spietata, combattente instancabile, perfetta action woman. Difficile riconoscerla in questi panni, anche per via della grande somiglianza fisica a causa della capigliatura corvina con le attrici Kate Beckinsale e Rhona Mitra. (Confesso che fino ai titoli di coda non avevo capito che fosse lei l’interprete di Ana…) La Miller appare talmente a proprio agio in questi panni da essere scambiata per un’esperta di ruoli d’azione. Inoltre abbiamo due protagonisti de La Mummia, Arnold Vosloo, nei panni di Zartan, l’uomo in grado di cambiare volto, e c’è un piccolo cameo di Brendan Fraser.

In definitiva un buon prodotto, anche se decisamente da migliorare dal punto di vista della trama. Speriamo che il secondo capitolo, la cui realizzazione appare di fatto scontata, migliori questo aspetto.

Conclusione: Consigliato.

Storm Shadow (Ninja Mercenary)
Pros: Looks cool and movie accurate. Lots of accessories. In a pinch, works as a generic ninja.
Cons: Coat tails restrict articulation somewhat. Main outfit is yellowed looking.

Storm Shadow (Paris Pursuit)
Pros: Head is pretty awesome. Plenty of accessories. Full range of G.I. Joe motion.
Cons: Kind of plain/vanilla.

The question is, which Storm Shadow to get? I would recommend the Ninja Mercenary version if you don’t already have a 25th Anniversary SS. If you do, then get the Paris Pursuit, as the head makes it unique among Storm Shadows.

Destro
Pros: Looks better and more Destro than regular RoC Destro. Head is more SHINY! Cheaper as a 3-pack as well.
Cons: No BFG (is that a Con?). More Destro but less 50s/60s super spy vibe.

Cobra Viper Commando
Pros: Looks fantastic, only decent version of this mold aside from the Crimson Viper. Makes this generally boring mold not suck.
Cons: Unibrow paint apps gives it a Comic Christmas Vader look.

Pros: Same as above, paint makes this mold “pop out” more. Though not as much improvement as the Viper Commando. Elite Viper looks like it jumped straight out of a comic.

The Cobra Senior Officers 3-Pack is a great deal. Destro is great if you’re looking for a movie Destro. I like the original slightly better for different reasons than I like this one, but if you gotta pick one, I’d go with the 3-Pack version since it’ll be cheaper as part of a set. Speaking of which, the two Vipers are great. They make the really really boring molds not suck, just by having a color scheme that pops out at you without being garish. Some might find the colors to be a bit cartoony, especially on the Elite Viper, but it’s nothing too bad.

This is an excellent set, especially with the price.
