You don’t have the time or the resources to evaluate every applicant who strolls in. to guide your w

You don’t have the time or the resources to evaluate every applicant who strolls in. to guide your work, you should develop a profile of your “ideal” candidate. You may never find your ideal, but you will establish a basic framework that outlines the person you are looking for.

Developing an ideal candidate profile is similar to viewing a lineup of suspects after you’ve witnessed a bank robbery. The individual you pick out may not be the actual bank robber, but chances are the real criminal is strongly similar. Often, a lineup helps police establish the silhouette or basic framework of the person being sought. The police is clear even if the details are not. Likewise, your ideal candidate profile will give you a sharper idea of what you are really looking for, so that you can increase your odds of finding him or her.

Use the following outline to develop of profile of your ideal candidate:

Must have, or have done, or be able to do:

Experience: type and years

Industry: type, or specific companies, and years

Skills or talents

Education

Should have, or have done, or be able to do:

Experience: type and years

Industry: type, or specific companies, and years

Education

Would be nice to have, or have done, or be able to do:

Experience: type and years

Industry: type, or specific companies, and years

Skills or talents

Education

Be specific when you draft your outline. If you want someone with strong follow-up skills, say so. If you want an assertive person who can handle high stress, say so. To create a good match between job and candidate, you need to define the person as closely as you define the job.

Keep your company culture in mind, too. If your company is team-oriented and flexible, you want a candidate who is comfortable with teamwork—and not everyone is. If your department is highly structured, you want someone who works well in a structured situation. Describe the qualities that your company values so that you can find compatible candidates.

Just remember that defining the candidate is a lot like shopping for groceries: the more you toss into your shopping cart, the more you’ll pay. The cost of filling a job is influenced by two factors: how long it takes to find the candidate, and the supply of qualified candidates. The greater the number of must have items on your list, the longer it’s going to take to find that person. The greater the experience, skills, or education requirements, the smaller the supply of candidates and the larger the compensation package required to hire the person.

A lot of people are going to get cameras this holiday season, or have them from the last few seasons

A lot of people are going to get cameras this holiday season, or have them from the last few seasons. They have a basic SLR and the kit lens. There’s a lot you can do with these simple combinations, but they’re limiting as well. I’ve been involved in a few discussion forums for these mid-level beginners and wanted to echo a post here about an individual who was looking to upgrade, primarily interested in wedding photography, but wanted advice on path forward.

“Agree with others, 18-55 kit *can* take a sharp photo, but it’ll be a challenge if you’re handheld, in low light, and don’t have a high-contrast subject that’s moving. The variable aperture also makes using Manual difficult, try Shutter Priority (Tv) or Aperture Priority (Av) first to get comfortable with working your exposure. If using a flash head, try fooling with bounce flash and Program mode (P). If you have an older Rebel without a thumb wheel, then you won’t really be able to use Manual for anything beyond posed shots, because you’ll only have one of three exposure parameters (shutter, aperture, sensitivity) assigned to the index wheel. Oh, thoroughly read the manual for your camera as you explore each setup. Some people are able to know just the basics and get great stuff, some people need to really dig and understand the nuance. Find out which you are and how much effort you’re willing to put into your craft before laying out cash. Regarding upgrades, I’d stick with the Rebel and first invest in glass. That 50 1.8 is a good choice, you can even get them used for $75 or lower, although they are a bit long on a 1.6x Rebel, almost 85mm. It’ll take some getting used to, which isn’t a bad thing. The 50 1.4 is an even better choice if you can drop a few hundred. Zooms, I’d say go for the 17-55 2.8 IS.. it doesn’t say L (no weather sealing, etc) but it’s L-quality glass. Every bit as good as the 16-35, 24-70 or 24-105 for under $1000. And if you don’t have one, get yourself a 580ex or 580exII flash head and rechargeable batteries (I like Ansmann 2700mAh AAs, they’re a bit pricey but pay for themselves over time) or an external battery pack. Learn to use bounce and fill-in flash and your photos will improve dramatically. More light means smaller aperture and faster shutter, which means more sharpness. More light also means greater saturation. I’m of the philosophy that photography isn’t cheap. Yes you can get by, and yes in the end, it’s the photographer not the camera. You can get some amazing photos with a $250 point-n-shoot, I know… but the proper kit makes it possible to get 500 amazing photos in a night as opposed to just 10 or 20. That’s once you’re ready to “go live,” you can learn everything you need to learn on the Rebel with one decent (fixed aperture) zoom, a prime or two, and a flash head. Best of luck and let’s see some of your photos as you progress!”

Monday 23rd November

On Monday I did some dark room photography. I had completed the induction in my 1st year and had really enjoyed it and liked the outcomes. So because I wanted to use different processes in my project, I decided I wanted to do some dark room photography, also because I had enjoyed doing it. I hadn’t done any dark room work since the induction, so kindly Harpreet reminded me of the process, as I didn’t want to go there and muck anything up.

The idea behind the photograms is that the character to my story, Alice , has been collecting interesting objects along her journey through the enchanted forest. However when an Ogre swoops her up and off her feet all of the interesting objects she has been collecting, fall out of her pocket on to the forest floor. So I wanted to create some photograms, with different objects just scattered, as if they have just landed there.

This photogram was taken on old photo paper, which is why the colour is more faded. I like the effect and texture of the paper, created by it being years old.

About three of the photograms on the new paper didn’t work out. (I bought new A5 photopaper after experimenting with the last piece of the old paper). I like how on the 3 that didn’t work out, you can still see tiny bits of the objects. On this one above you can see the most.

Test strip.

There is even more interesting detail when you view them in real life and up close. Some of the objects have turned out really nice, with a great effect being created. Now I will experiment with them more, take some better photographs and put one of them into a spread to she how they work.

Wood paneling may conjure up images of dark dens and libraries, but not in Norway, where architects and builders use the age-old practice of lye bleaching to create pleasingly pale wood surfaces. Norwegian-born architect Casper Mork-Ulnes used the technique in his renovated 19th-century Victorian (see Architect Visit: Mork-Ulnes in San Francisco). Mork-Ulnes says, “Given the dark winters, Norwegian homes tend to have light or colorful interiors. The farmhouse I grew up in had lye-treated floors. Lye bleaches the wood and stops the yellowing effect of aging due to sunlight exposure; oil or green soap is then applied to protect the wood.”

We have had quite a few requests to provide décor ideas to hide unsightly air conditioning units in gardens. Badec Bros Deco specializes in feature walls, such as gabion feature walls. These designer walls are ideal to hide air conditioning units, unsightly views, or ugly old walls, without having to remove the existing wall.

We manufacture our gabion walls from 30mm x 3mm angle iron, which is welded together to ensure a strong frame. Then we weld strong, steel mesh onto the frame to create the shape of the wall. Once the hollow wall structure has been manufactured, we install it on site and fill it with pebbles, slate stone or chunky quartzite gravel.

Alternatively, we can also construct mild steel feature walls and add intricate detail to the surface of the steel to decorate it. There are three finishes to choose from. We can powder coat the feature wall in any colour imaginable, or we can apply mild steel finish or a rusted finish. Our powder coating is SABS approved.

Badec Bros Deco can also manufacture mild steel screens. These screens can be used to create privacy or to hang Cubedec hanging pots or hanging sculptures onto. We can customize our mild steel screens to any size and shape and with a wide range of finishes, such as powder coating in any colour, mild steel finish or a rust effect or even wooden cladding.

Should you wish to have your very own signature Cubedec feature wall, steel dustbin, interactive sculpture, Cubedec shelving, Cubedec miniature Zen garden box, 2010 Soccer World Cup décor, mild steel lamp shade, mild steel screen, Cubedec laser-cut logo, gabion counter, narration stand, gabion light cage, gabion bollard, gabion water feature, sculptured living wall, sculptured flagpoles, unique pot and drip tray, customized sculpture, Cubedec bench, trendy steel décor with your company logo emblazoned on it, mild steel inspirational slogan, steel laser-cut signage, mild steel mould, Cubedec Pot, hanging sculpture, gabion pot, gabion wall or gabion terrace, wooden or steel feature poles, bar code trellis, Cubedec water feature, pergola, arch, sculpture or trellis, please feel free to contact our energetic and knowledgeable sales representative, Mareleen van Zijl, on her cell phone at 078 800 5112, the office number at 012 460 7990, or via e-mail at mareleen@badecbros.com

She will gladly arrange an appointment with you to listen to your ideas and to stun you with our own creative ideas! You dream it, we manufacture it!

I read in Scott Kelby’s book “The Digital Photography Book” that the best time to shoot flowers was when the sky is grey and even better right after the rain. As I completed that part of the book the rain started, so I ran out with my camera to the rose bush outside our flat and shot this one.

Scott was right the colors come out best when taken right after the rain.

And the droplets of water make the rose look even fresher.

I found this door quite strange, especially the placement. It goes straight to the street, obviously there must have been another house there before. But it has been like this for years.

I took the photo on a morning. I was concerned that the colors would not come out very well but it turns out quite good. I did some work on the colors in Lightroom to make them come out some more.

It’s not an HDR photo, just a single shot.

Details are: Aperture: f/5.6 – Exposure: 1/40 sec - Focal lengths: 30mm - ISO: 200
