Well it’s been an eventful week, but I’m finally back in sunny ol’ Cornwall.

The train journey home was very interesting, delays and an arrest adding to the misery of the journey. (And before you ask it wasn’t me that was arrested lol).

Another peice of good news is the fact that I’m going to the NASUWT young teachers conference in Birmingham on the 23rd of January 2010. This is quite exciting and my first oppurtunity to get involved with a union. Everything’s paid for even the travel, accommodation and food, so I can’t complain really… Being a student teacher does have it’s benefits .

Being home is a bit like detox. I won’t be going out until New Years Eve probably, so really looking forward to that. I have no idea what to dress up as, but I better think fast. Looe is well known for it’s NYE parties so that’s where we shall goooo!

Anyway I hope you all have a lovely Christmas. Byeeee. x

In my previous blog I mentioned about the Obesity Epidemic… Today’s blog is going to cover a little bit more than just a sad truth, but first we need to dis-associate obesity from vanity and list the real reasons why we should keep our weight under control…

Weight related problems kill more people in America than tobacco products, drugs or alcohol. A report released on November 5th 2009 - by the American Institute for Cancer Research reads… “There are over 100,000 new cases of cancer that are caused by obesity each year. With one third of Americans overweight, the study sheds disconcerting light on the health of the nation. The cancers most closely linked to excess weight are breast, endometrial, esophageal, kidney, colorectal, pancreatic, and gallbladder”

Besides cancer there are other Health Consequences of being OVERWEIGHT regardless if you are obese or slightly overweight the risks for the following conditions increase with each additional pound that is gained:

Type 2 diabetes

High blood pressure

High cholesterol

High levels of triglycerides

Liver and Gallbladder disease

Stroke

Coronary heart disease

Sleep apnea and respiratory problems

Osteoarthritis

For women you have Gynecological problems (abnormal menses, infertility)

And for men the dreaded decease of Erectile Dysfunction which sometimes ends up also killing a relationship

I believe if we really knew all the deceases associates with gaining weight, that weight loss would be a priority in our lives….

Every one of us is exposed to both external and internal toxins. We can’t avoid it. We are exposed to toxins in many forms-in polluted air and water, in the home and workplace, as well as in our food. We even form some of the most dangerous toxins within our own bodies.

To effectively and efficiently remove these toxins is critical to our health and longevity. Every system in our bodies has its own method of detoxification. Over time, the onslaught and accumulation of these toxins, coupled with our body’s inability to deal with the clean-up adequately, takes its toll on our health and quality of living.

Toxic heavy metals have been shown to increase free radical activity in the body, a major cause of degeneration. Many enzymes critical to good health require vitamin and mineral co-factors for proper activation. Toxic heavy metals can take the place of the proper mineral co-factors, interfering with the proper functioning of these enzymes. In this way, accumulation of heavy metals can contribute to premature aging and degenerative disease conditions. Heavy metal toxicity can also lead to abnormal immune function, learning disorders, and degenerative disorders associated with the brain.

In the late 1980s an interesting experiment was conducted by Dr. Gary Price Todd, MD, author of the book, “Nutrition, Health and Disease”. The study involved individuals with heavy metal poisoning, specifically lead, mercury, cadmium and aluminum. Patients were placed on a program of full spectrum bio-available organic, micro trace minerals.

After 16 months the study demonstrated levels of toxic metals in the patients were much reduced. It was concluded that organic, ionic minerals naturally chelate or remove the inorganic heavy metal form of mineral from the body. There have been other studies done with similar results. I believe Body Balance works like this in the body.

I know two doctors who did a number of hair analysis studies on their patients who were on Body Balance and the results definitely showed a removal of heavy metals from the body. Studies done at McGill University reveal algin, a component of sea vegetation, binds to heavy metals and other chemical pollutants, allowing them to be safely eliminated from the body, including radioactive substances. Body Balance is also very high in natural carotinoids which are potent anti-oxidants that destroy free radicals and protect the cells from damage due to lead or other heavy metal poisoning. The aloe vera softens bowel movements and aids in removing heavy metals from the digestive tract. So there are many reasons to be on Body Balance!!

The sulfur-containing amino acids in Amino Charge also act as detoxifiers and remove heavy metals from the body, and the other aminos are powerful anti-oxidants that protect the liver, kidneys, heart, and central nervous system. (There are also amino acids in Body Balance, although in a much smaller amount.) Flexeoplus contains MSM as one of its main ingredients. This also helps the body detoxify heavy metals.

Calcium that is bio-available prevents lead from being deposited in the body tissues, and OsteOmegaCare is THE most bio-available form I know of.

True Greens has many wonderful ingredients as well. Foods high in chlorophyll such as alfalfa, algaes, chlorella, etc. also help absorb toxic metals, as well as being rich in valuable nutrients.

The last thing I would recommend is the colon cleanse program. The Activated Charcoal and the Intestinal Tone are both wonderful for absorbing and eliminating toxic heavy metals from the digestive tract. There are some specifics for different heavy metals, e.g., selenium neutralizes the toxic effects of mercury (it also helps with other heavy metals as well); zinc can displace lead and lower the burden on the body (low levels of zinc have been found consistently in people with high levels of lead), etc., etc. All of these minerals are found in abundance in these products.

A little bit about why these substances are so toxic and hard to get rid of. I’ll use lead as an example. First of all, it is a cumulative poison that is retained in the body. Even at low levels, lead that is not excreted through the digestive system accumulates in the body and is absorbed directly from the blood into other tissues. When the lead leaves the bloodstream, it is stored in the bones, along with other minerals, where it continues to build up over a lifetime.

Detoxifying from the bones is virtually impossible unless you use something that can be absorbed similarly, like other minerals. Lead from the bones may then re-enter the bloodstream at any time as a result of severe biological stress, such as pregnancy, menopause, illness or prolonged immobilization. When it is in the body, it inhibits some basic enzyme functions.

In toxic amounts it damages the heart, kidneys, liver and nervous system. The body cannot seem to distinguish between calcium and lead. Once it enters the body, it is assimilated in the same manner as calcium. So people with deficiencies of calcium are more susceptible to lead toxicity as well, which is pretty scary when we consider how starved our population is for calcium.

Other heavy metals follow the same process, except they are retained in different areas of the body. With mercury, it is in the pain center of the brain and in the central nervous system. Aluminum is also deposited in the brain. Again, calcium deficiency really aggravates the situation.

Hey Guys!

Today is Winter Solstice, the darkest day of the year. It has been a landmark day for thousands of years in many different cultures’ calendars, since it has to do with the natural rhythms of nature and is not a manmade date. I believe when there is much darkness on the outside, it is a good reminder to be in touch with the light within. Our inner light is always there, no matter how dark it is on the outside. Today I had my yoga students hold some poses for a while with their eyes closed, to feel the inner light. And as we move through this time, and find the light in unexpected places and where we didn’t think it could be- the light then starts to come back, more and more.

Besides Winter Solstice, the topic of cell phones was on my mind. I saw a story yesterday that a Maine state legislator is pushing to have a warning on cell phones that they may cause brain cancer.

My mother has been preaching to me about cell phone dangers for years, when I first even got a cell phone. She insists on me sticking an anti-radiation button thing on my phone, which is supposed to help reduce the massive amounts of radiation that cell phones emit. Well who knows if it really works or not, but I’ll take all the help I can get! What’s chilling to me is that we have to remember that back in the 1930’s and 1940’s, information that tobacco was extremely harmful was not widely reported. People smoked away, only to learn decades later how carcinogenic smoking really was.

Everyone's gotta have a cell these days.... Photo courtesy of phillyburbs.com

Of course, the Wireless Association claims cell phones are safe. But we do all have to look out for our own health. After all, foods laden with toxic chemicals and additives are also legally considered “safe.”

The fact is that our cell phones are microwave transmitters. Microwave energy oscillates at millions to billions of cycles per second. The Journal of Cellular Biochemistry reports that these frequencies may cause cancer and other diseases by interfering with cellular DNA and its repair mechanisms. Microwave promotes rapid cell aging. Italian scientists have recently demonstrated that cell phone radiation makes cancerous cells grow aggressively. Cordless phones marked 900 megahertz or 2.4 gigahertz emit the same dangerous microwave radiation as cell phones.

Research by University of Washington professor Dr. Henry Lai shows brain cells are clearly damaged by microwave levels far below the U.S. government’s “safety” guidelines. Dr. Lai notes that even tiny doses of radio frequency can accumulate over time and lead to harmful effects. He warns that public exposure to radiation from wireless transmitters “should be limited to minimal.”

Independent tests show that cell phones can also leak huge amounts of radiation from the keypad and mouthpiece. This radiation deeply penetrates brain, ear and eye tissues, which are especially susceptible to microwave damage. Belt clip cases allow cell phones to deliver radiation to the liver or kidney areas.

Recent studies confirm that cell and cordless phone microwave can: Damage nerves in the scalp, cause blood cells to leak hemoglobin, cause memory loss and mental confusion, cause headaches and induce extreme fatigue, create joint pain, muscle spasms and tremors, create burning sensation and rash on the skin, alter the brain’s electrical activity during sleep, induce ringing in the ears, impair sense of smell, precipitate cataracts, retina damage and eye cancer, open the blood-brain barrier to viruses and toxins, reduce the number and efficiency of white blood cells, stimulate asthma by producing histamine in mast cells, cause digestive problems and raise bad cholesterol levels, stress the endocrine system, especially pancreas, thyroid, reproductive organs. GEEZ! ANYTHING ELSE??

There is a lot of research on the cell phone subject in Europe. Spanish researchers have shown that cell phones can alter electrical activity of a child’s brain for hours, causing drastic mood changes and possible behavior and learning disabilities. Insurance studies in England showed that an average driver talking on a cell is actually more impaired in function and reaction time than a drunk. Finland’s Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority reports that one hour of exposure to mobile phone radiation can cause human cells to shrink. Researchers believe this is due to increased protein activity, an indicator of cell damage. Studies done in Sweden that date back five or six years concluded that there is not an increased brain tumor risk from using cell phones, he says.

Brain cancer rates in USA have increased by 25% since 1975. In 2001, 185,000 Americans were diagnosed with some form of brain cancer. A grade four brain tumor can grow from the size of a grape to tennis ball size in just 4 months.

Scary! Photo courtesy of artpredator.files.com.

Could cell phones today be what tobacco was 70 years ago?

The National Cancer Institute says studies until now have turned up inconsistent results. “Although research has not consistently demonstrated a link between cellular telephone use and cancer, scientists still caution that further surveillance is needed before conclusions can be drawn,” says the NCI’s Web site. Hmmm….

Well what can we do to protect our own health? Since the reality is that we are all going to use cell phones anyway (including me)!

- Use a wired headset whenever possible. Avoid using Bluetooth, which will continue to attract radiation. Be sure to get wired headsets for your children, which are especially susceptible to radiation. The other option is to try to use speaker phone in private settings as much as you can (you don’t want to be that annoying person doing that in public of course!).

- Text when you can instead of making more calls! Texting doesn’t expose you to the same level of radiation, because we obviously aren’t pressing the phone right up to our head!

- Use your land line when you are home (of course a lot of us New Yorkers, such as myself, don’t even have a land line! So this one doesn’t apply to us).

- When you’re talking on your cell, periodically switch your phone from ear to ear.

I hope this helps information helps protect you and your family, and that you start to employ some of these precautions!

Something to think about in the new year coming ahead. Happy Holidays!

In health and love,

Kimberly

New Hampshire — An autopsy report shows that Kevin McEvoy died in jail due to dehydration and kidney failure caused by prolonged vomiting associated with heroin withdrawal. That was in 2008. Now his parents have filed a federal lawsuit against jail officials.

Kevin, 24, had been jailed after his arrest at a mall where Sears security officers say they saw him and a woman shoplifting five Nintendo game cartridges with a total value of $110.

The afternoon he died, Kevin was taken to the medical unit of the jail because of dehydration. He was placed on bed rest, but was apparently not given other treatment. That evening, he was found unresponsive in his cell and pronounced dead.

“Knowing that he died in such a horrible way really hurts,” Kevin’s mom told a reporter last year. “They just let them rot in there.”

Read more here and here.

I often hear doctors, drug treatment providers and corrections officials say that opiate detox is “not life threatening.”

What they seem to mean is that people who are experiencing withdrawal from opiates deserve to suffer. As long as we don’t let them die, they seem to say, we have no legal, ethical or moral obligation to limit suffering or other harm. And we have no obligation to work to reduce the risk of harm, no matter how foreseeable or preventable.

When will they get it? The agony of untreated opiate withdrawal is not part of the sentence!

Worst of all, this callous approach creates a climate where those who have the responsibility to safeguard the health and safety of people withdrawing from opiates take so little notice or care that occasionally people do die.

I applaud Kevin’s parents for holding those who failed their son accountable. I hope and pray that they will have the strength to see this through. It will not be easy. But if they are able to stay strong, they can do something important for the thousands of others who face opiate detox in jail every day across this country.

If you knew me, or anything about me, you would know that I am a stoner.I’ve been smoking, cultivating or selling herb for years. (Does an admission of past acts hold up in court? LAWL) I’ve been smoking since I was 17, by my own account, I self medicate. When I was about 15-16 I was trying to understand some things about the world that just didn’t make any sense.
Suicide. Self Mutilation. Drugs. Parties. People. Relationships.Women.

My path to understanding was no straight line. It has taken years of practice, dedication and reflection. But I digress. I was misdiagnosed with ‘depression’ and started on medication. I believe it was Fluvoxamine. Yep, just googled it,
that was the one. After about a month of being on Fluvoxamine I started to become manic. Like really manic.I was practically suffering from Attention Deficit Disorder. The doctor’s solution was not counselling or to stop taking the medication, no…nope. They put me on mood stabilizers. Any awesome little tablet for epilepsy called Epilim. These tablets killed all sense of self. I couldn’t feel. ANYTHING. I felt so fucking isolated from myself. So I stopped.

Around this time is when the parties, drugs and wild girlfriends started.

I couldn’t deal with most of the feelings I had, due to the plain fact of never learning emotional mechanisms or how to deal with bad situations.

Then I moved out of home. At the age of 17. I don’t even remember why I left. (Oh..Did I mention the part about me having no real long-term memories ?) I moved in with a friend and that is when the ball really got rolling.
I was going to TAFE at the time, trying to complete a year 12 equivalency course to get into University, whilst the friend that I was living with was doing a basic IT course, at the same institution. This turned out to be disaster.
We had our own dealers. Our own systems. Our own fucking lives.I was caught up in the lifestyle of a borderline criminal.

After a while of living on the couch, retardedly high for weeks on end – I was ecstatic to learn that my dealer had a spare room to rent in the house he was planning on moving in to. This caused drama, straight away.
I was seen as a dog for stealing the dealer.

The short version is: I lived there, lost contact with all of my boys, started singing in a shitty screamo band, became converted(to Christianity by my band mate and a Hawaiian guy named Eddie.) started dating a lovely blonde, learnt how to be a wheelman, ruined the day of my friends fathers funeral and proceeded to not have a fucking clue about anything.
Also, I ended up with a whole bunch of shitty jail-style tattoos, courtesy of my dealer’s brother – who learnt off of a former Cessnock con.

And that is only the beginning.

Myself and about 4 other friends have decided, individually, enough is enough for us.
We live ridiculous lives, with no consistency, no structure and no personal
strength. We have lived weak, but comfortable, lives. Time to get our shit together.

There are nights we wont sleep. Days we don’t move.Meals we can’t stand and emotions we can’t fathom. The hardest part is not giving in. We have been addicted to the a life of numbness. Every day is a new challenge of finding a way
of coping before paralysis, anxiety, boredom, fear & hate set in. We are not bad people. We are just lost.

I really wanted to write this as encouragement to my friends.Encouragement for myself. But we don’t need it.We need your patience. We are young again. We are learning. To my friends – I love you and be strong.

Neurotoxins are substances attracted to the mammalian nervous system. They are absorbed by nerve endings and travel inside the neuron to the cell body. On their way they disrupt vital functions of the nerve cell, such as axonal transport of nutrients, mitochondrial respiration and proper DNA transcription. The body is constantly trying to eliminate neurotoxins via the available exit routes: the liver, kidney, skin and exhaled air. Detox mechanisms include acetylation, sulfation, glucuronidation, oxidation and others. Often the host is triggered to produce neurotoxins (which are damaging to their own tissues) by the invading microbes through molecular trickery.

The liver is most important in the toxin elimination process. Here most elimination products are expelled with the bile into the small intestine and should leave the body via the digestive tract. However, because of the lipophilic/neurotropic nature of the neurotoxins, most are reabsorbed by the abundant nerve endings of the enteric nervous system (ENS) in the intestinal wall. The ENS has more neurons than the spinal chord.

From the moment of mucosal uptake the toxins can potentially take four different paths:

Neuronal uptake and via axonal transport to the spinal chord (sympathetic neurons) or brainstem (parasympathetics) from here back to the brain.

Venous uptake and via the portal vein back to the liver

Lymphatic uptake and via the thoracic duct to the subclavian vein

Uptake by bowel bacteria and tissues of the intestinal tract.

Here is an incomplete list of common neurotoxins in order of importance:

(i) Heavy metals: such as mercury, lead, cadmium and aluminum.

(ii) Biotoxins: such as tetanus toxin, botulinum toxin (botox), ascaridin (from intestinal parasites), unspecified toxins from streptococci, staphylococci, lyme disease, clamydia, tuberculosis, fungal toxins and toxins produced by viruses. Biotoxins are minute molecules (200-1000 kilodaltons) containing nitrogen and sulfur. They belong to a group of chemical messengers which microorganisms use to control the host’s immune system, host behavior and the host’s eating habits.

(iii) Xenobiotics (man-made environmental toxins): such as dioxin, phthalates, formaldehyde, insecticides, wood preservatives, PCBs etc.

(iv) Food Preservatives, excitotoxins and cosmetics: such as aspartame (diet sweeteners) food colorings, fluoride, methyl-and propyl-paraben, etc.

I have found that mercury in its different chemical forms has a synergistic amplifying effect with all other neurotoxins. When mercury is removed, the body starts to more effectively eliminate all other neurotoxins, even if they are not addressed.

This book is wonderful for anyone considering detoxing. It is VERY practical, telling you how to maximize your cleansing results without depriving yourself. For example, when discussing these that should be reduced/cut out before starting a detox, smoking is mentioned. It lets you know that for the best results, smoking should cease, but if you are unable to handle this, it gives alternatives that gradually reduce the smoking and load on your body. There are a variety of plans: 30 day make over, 9 day intensive, weekend energizer, mono-diet, etc. Color pictures are included also. Also, focuses on detoxing your life. Ways to calm and replenish the spirit (like mediatation) and detoxing your home environment. The diet was easy to follow and has been a life style change to me. The book was infomative and helpful, and I am better for it

Oh my! I havent written for ages it seems! Ok, here we go: I cannot really believe myself but I star

Oh my! I havent written for ages it seems! Ok, here we go:

I cannot really believe myself but I started to exercise. With Pilates. I like Pilates and theres not much to tell about it because those efforts are well known. I dont have a plan about exercising I just feel the need to do it now and then. Who knows for how long!

My food is more vegan than raw vegan these days. I added some cereals and soymilk. And my moms deliciuos bread. Oh, its so delish… but I feel my body responsing to it immediately. The bread makes me stinky somehow. And the cereals dont keep me satisfied, just full. Strange to explain. I have no words either for that.

This is her bread.

So Christmas is around the corner, do you have your christmas gifts already? I have *yikes*, watch this:

This are Sarmas (Sarma Melngailis, Matthew Kenney: Raw Food Real World) Macaroons and love to make them, the whole house turns into a christmas bakery and the smell… uuuuhhhmm, already when preparing:

    ENJOY!

SWEET

DREAMS are made of these…

I also love to have a smoothie in the morning. Mostly Banango or banana + orange and as a special treat blueberry-banana-smoothie (because blueberries are not so much in season now and expensive as well, so I try not to take one so often.) The same goes with raspberries. I cant resist when I see some and to blend them with a banana is sooooo delicious! Ive called this pink sunshine because its exactly what came into my mind when I enjoyed it:

Sometimes I make salads. But Im still not that much into it.

These are the last ones.

So Christmas is coming soon and I hope you enjoy this time as I do. The Christmas market is right infront of my doorstep, and you guess it – its the reason why Im not all raw these days. But these days will go by and its fine. And I plan to do a detox after christmas. Maybe a 3-day-detox, a juice fast or water fast? Hm, well see. And afterwards I want to eat less raw gourmet and less nuts. Although Im not eating much of them now. I think its good to eat just fruits, greens and vegetables just as they are for a few days. The days between christmas and new year are perfect for that. Ill keep you posted.

Actually Im reading books about shamans and esp. Totems/Power Animals (dont find a exact translation). When I started to read a book about that I cried nearly every few pages. Usually Im not crying often but this really touched me. It was like coming home, like missing something (which I didnt knew) and suddenly coming back, knowing it all has been here before (and always will). Listening to shaman drums makes something with me and I cannot express what it is.

I wish everyone of you a very special christmas time! Enjoy 4th of Advent and Ill write again before christmas!

Raw love to you!

Some “Specialist” really frown on detoxing, but a lot of those “Specialist”

Some “Specialist” really frown on detoxing, but a lot of those “Specialist” also push you to become vaccinated for the stupid flu virus (totally unnecessary if you’re not super old or young, especially since it only protects against like, 3 strains), and so I am going against the grain and embracing a detox.

As you all know from yesterday, I am sick. Lots of sneezing and fatigue. I’m breaking out into a freakin rash on my wrist and arms again and I know it is coming from me eating candy bars (totally not vegan, but I LOVE snickers), processed foods like potato chips (does anyone else love the Kettle brand?) and just not taking good care of myself. I feel….icky. I feel puffy, haggard, and just overall nasty.

My running time has slowed and I’m just not feeling as enthusiastic as I’d like during my work-outs.

All this means that I need a diet and work-out overall.

As I said before, I want to perform more crunches to strengthen my core.

I also want to recommit myself to eating more raw, whole foods.

In terms of the food, there are several reasons I have fallen off the wagon. One reason is money. While I fully believe it is worth the extra cash to purchase organic produce, sometimes I really just don’t have the option. My car got hit- AGAIN. Another hit and run. I’m disconnecting my cable and land-line at the end of the month, and my family and I are not exchanging presents this year because of the money. I am honestly thrilled. I’m not in a Grinch sort of mood, but I’m just not into the holidays either-not this year. It doesn’t matter. I had an AMAZING Christmas last year, and the memory of that can carry me through this years Festives.

Wasn’t I talking about food?

Oh yeah. So, the money thing is an issue and then there is an issue that at the health food store by me, their freakin fruit is sometimes moldy. WTF! How can these people sell moldy fruit. So annoying. So, I don’t want to buy $5 moldy blueberries, which is understandable, but I also don’t want to feel like this (sick and gross) either.

So how does one detox. There are lots of different ways. Some people fast and some just eat fresh fruit and vegetables or drink fresh juices (not the stuff that comes in a container, either). I tend to like to do a combination of both. I’ll do fasting for half of my day, just drinking loads of water and detox tea, and then in the evening I have greens or blended fruit. You’d think I’d feel hungry, but I’m not. I probably am so toxic, my body is more focused on that then eating. This also helps you’re body to use stored fat for fuel. I am NOT advocating starvation. You starve long enough and your metabolism will slow, you won’t crap, you’ll feel very pissy and you’re whole system will be thrown out of whack. However, a simple fast every couple of weeks does wonders.

On a totally separate note, has anyone seen this ad by Peta?

I just find this ad so offensive, and frankly I find Peta offensive, because it’s their activist that throw paint on people who wear fur. Now, maybe I should not condemn Peta for its paint throwers, because maybe the powers that be of the organization do not really condone such behavior, and I don’t want to blame an entire organization because of some jerks. However, obviously the powers that be at Peta must condone making fun of people who are overweight which I KNOW is unacceptable. I do not find this ad remotely funny and I hope no one else does either. I do not promote being obese or overweight in any way, but I also do not promote hate and this ad is hateful-period!! I hate when people say nasty things against the thin and I also hate when people say nasty things against the heavy. Everyone has feelings and if you really want to help someone, you don’t purposely try to single them out and humiliate them.

FYI Peta- There are plenty of overweight vegetarians. Trust me, I have met them.

Anyway, I think weight and health in general is a personal thing and should be kept that way. Talking about other peoples weight is tacky like discussing money. Do not be tacky!
Anyway, hopefully I’ll have some pics to share with you soon, and hopefully I will be feeling a lot better when I blog next!

TTYL

As you know, late last month, I declared that I would be doing a full detox (foolish, foolish girl I am). And I wanted to update you on where I am in the process (the details/update of the physical, internal detox will follow…I still need some time to stop being mad at myself before I can fully divulge the insanity revealing of a lighter, healthier me).

But as far as my hair goes, I can update you on that as I go.

First things first. I started with a really good, deep cleansing. And you know what that means. BENTONITE CLAY!!!

But not just any old bentonite clay. I upped the game. I did a new version – for me at least – that included water, coconut oil, tea tree oil and lavendar. Felt great. The natural tingling of the bentonite clay was intesified due to the added tea tree oil. As usual, my hair was super clean without feeling stripped, but with a little added shine from the coconut oil. I proceeded to straighten, and then I did the only thing that a fully detoxing, totally dedicated to the cause girl should do. I snipped, snipped.

I got rid of every inch of hair that did not sing the song of health. I banished every split end, knot and frizzy fray. And then I had my girl even it out. Boy, I never realized how uneven my hair grew. My left side grows leaps and bounds over my right. Anyway, several inches later, my hair is luscious and fully healthy from root to shortened tip. These days, I am in the business of healthy hair…length is a by-product.

Notice the beautiful shine (or is that sheen?). There is no added serum or glossifier or any of that stuff.

Good stuff, huh? Even if I do say so myself. I really think my hair looks so shiny in these pics (and real life too) is because of the consistent use of my homemade goodness (I promise to post details on this, I really do…I just want it to be *right*, ya know?). I literally have a clean slate on which to proceed. I’m excited!

The next phase is a tea rinse – consisting of chamomile, lavender, nettle and sage…

Sugar Detox Day #5: This morning I ended my sugar-free, detox, by adding 1/2 of an apple to my 40 oz

Sugar Detox Day #5: This morning I ended my sugar-free, detox, by adding 1/2 of an apple to my 40 oz of daily green juice. (For those of you that are just pulling this up. I did an experiment, excluding all sugar for four days). After ninety-six hours hours of not so much as a carrot, my initial reaction to the sugar was: slight nausea. Normally, I would have added carrots and guzzled the juice down within minutes… instead I was able to slowly sip the juice with pleasure… 1 hour later, I cut up two, crisp fuji apples. Again, instead of swallowing them whole, I was able to better enjoy their sweet bite, as I would have a good glass of wine. After being sugar-free for ninety-six hours, I no longer felt the urge to devour my breakfast. I did not feel that I HAD to eat quickly. In fact, I was not even craving them, like I may have in the past. Sugar is a fascinating thing.

read: pure poison.

The average American consumes over 100 pounds of sugar (sucrose) a year and with millions of advertising dollars invested in its’ manufacture, it is not going anywhere, anytime soon.

Truth be told: Sugar is addicting. An addiction to sugar begins at a young age. It hides in baby food, condiments (like mayo and ketchup), salad dressings, deli meats, bread, pretzels… you name it, and its probably got it.

No wonder ketchup is so delicious. It is a sum of sugar, tomatoes and vinegar.

Sugar, in general, is not the enemy here. Fructose, the sugar found in most fruits, raw honey and some vegetables, is absorbed directly into the blood, where it can then be converted to glucose. Glucose is what gives us that quick burst of energy. Glucose is also the main source of sugar that is used by the tissues and cells for energy. See… it is not all bad… but… and here is the big. fat. but!

In the United States, the average American probably consumes close to 20 teaspoons of added sugar per day. This sugar is in addition to the sugar that is naturally found in our food. Based on a study done by the USDA, and compiled by Marion Nestle in her book, “What to Eat,” there were 142 pounds of total caloric sweeteners, being used, per capita (per person), in 2004. Of these… 61 were refined sugars, 78 were high fructose corn syrup and 1.4 were from other sources (honey, maple syrup, etc.).

That means that your average adult is responsible for consuming close to “a half a pound of sugar per day!” -Nestle

Sugar has been found to contribute to:

obesity

tooth decay

psychological problems

diabetes

PMS

mood swings

anxiety

stress.. etc. etc.

Sadly, as obesity and diabetes grow more prevalent, society tells us that we need to cut out our fruits and sweet vegetables, pick up our prescription, and grab a box of chemically altered, sugar-free and diet sodas while we are at!

And yet we wonder why we have problems?

Fruit is the most perfect food on earth. Nourished by the soil and kissed by the sun, organic fruit will ripen and drop right into our hand. It is created by Nature to be enjoyed and nourish.

fruit sugar is not the devil.

In addition to supplying our tissues and cells with fructose, fruits are high in water, fiber, and a variety of vitamins, minerals and trace minerals. It is for this reason that I am convinced that we need natural sugars in our diet. I find it sad when I hear of people avoiding the natural sugars that Mother Nature has to offer, and instead opt for artificial and sugar substitutes. Fruit is not the culprit.

The problem with sugar, which, I rediscovered during my sugar detox, is that not only does the average American consume an overabundance of sugar, but we have come to rely on it as a main source of energy. Furthermore, as I mentioned earlier in this article, we typically consume sugar in the form of refined sugar, and not natural fructose sugars (fructose is not the same as high fructose corn syrup).

Because sugar is addicting, we hit highs, and lows– that only seem to be fixed by consuming more sugar. When sugar addicts try to omit sugar (sometimes, even for a few hours), they suffer withdrawal symptoms, like: headaches, irritability, fatigue, mood swings… I saw this growing up, as my mom, who grew up drinking Coca-Cola from a bottle, would be unable to function without her trip to BK.

During my detox, I was lucky in the respect that my main source of sugar comes from vegetable and fruit sources (including wine), but that is not to say that I do not enjoy my dark cocoa, raw honey and agave. Because of this, I did not experience any significant symptoms of withdrawal.

Yesterday, somewhere around the 84 hour mark of having no sugar, I felt completely drained. As I self-assessed my eating patterns, I know for a fact, that I would have probably reached for some form of sweet treat (maybe dried fruit, hot chocolate, raw honey…).

In the past, I have also looked for sugar to calm my nerves, offer comfort, or “warm” my body. I have learned, through this sugar-detox, that the body requires natural sugars in order to operate, but sometimes even natural sugar is not what is looking for.

I love flax seeds and sunnies, but I have recently discovered pumpkin seeds too... the jury is still out

One of the best alternatives I have found for sugar cravings is the sunflower seed. They are energizing, warming, and eaten alone*, can be cleansing.

Next time you are about to reach for that sugary treat… ask yourself what you are really craving. Is it:

energy?

warmth?

comfort?

hunger?

Or are you:

tired? cranky? irritable? emotional? anxious? or stressed?

If so… reaching for that snickers bar, soda pop or slice of pizza is the last thing your body needs (not to mention that it never needs any of those things). Those foods provide us with no nutritional value and only spike our energy levels up, just to knock them down again. It is a never ending cycle. Don’t feed the beast… nourish your cells!!

these belong on a gingerbread house. and nowhere else.

The next time you are feeling low, I suggest grabbing a small handful of seeds (or almonds)… you’ll be surprised by the amount of energy those little guys provide *

Natural Energy:

Freshly pressed veggie juice with apples or carrots to sweeten

2-4 oz of raw seeds and nuts and perhaps a small handful of unsweetened, and unsulphured dried fruit.

Hey Guys,

I’m still in LA, but even here it still gets cold at night! I really like hot drinks this time of year. Sometimes a milky hot drink is really special, and extra comforting. If you haven’t already, I suggest you check out my Vegan Almost Raw Hot Chocolate.

Sometimes you either don’t have raw cacao in the house, or don’t want even a tiny bit of caffeine, OR you just want variety! In these cases, for my hot drink lovers, you will love my Vegan Vanilla Latte!! I am excited to share this with you. It is yum!

It contains cinnamon, which has been shown to help regulate our blood sugar levels, and has an anti-clotting effect on the blood. It is even recommended for people with Type 2 diabetes to consume. Cinnamon is even believed to boost boosts cognitive function and memory.

<img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-2746" src="http://kimberlysnyder.wordpress.com/files/2009/12/ceylon-cinnamon.jpg" alt="Cinnamon!
Vegan Vanilla Latte:
For 1 person:

1. Measure out a mugful of unsweetened vanilla almond milk. You can either make it yourself (Check out my blog on Megan’s Almond Milk for instructions and add an extra tsp. of vanilla extract), or get buy some at the store. The Almond Breeze brand is an okay alternative if you don’t have the time to make your own milk.

2. Heat your mugful of unsweetened vanilla almond milk in a pot to warm it up. Don’t boil!

3. Pour the milk back into your mug, then add 1 tsp. of cinnamon and stir.

4. Sweeten as desired with either raw agave nectar or Stevia (if you don’t mind the aftertaste of Stevia in a drink!).

5. Sip slowly and enjoy!!

I hope you love and enjoy this drink. I know I truly do, and it is a great alternative to a desert if you want something sweet after a meal- but still easy to digest.

Lots of love,
Kimberly
