Decade after decade, liberal policies have ruined just about every city controlled by liberal politicians. What do these cities have in common? Higher crime rates, higher poverty rates, higher unemployment and terrible education systems. Detroit is a prime example of failed liberalism ideologies.

(Petosky, Michigan – Photographer unknown)

The Immutable Kingdom – Part 73

By Scott A. Klaft

The Church In Time Of War …continued

While Tolbert Fanning was touring the South, on the same day after South Carolina taking the lead in secession, Alexander Campbell was journeying through the North, promoting Bethany College. In Indianapolis, Campbell met with his new associate-editor of the Millennial Harbinger, Isaac Errett. Errett had turned down a teaching position, but had agreed to help raise funds for the school, and this is what he and Campbell were doing in the northern states. Starting with the churches and cities in Indiana, Campbell’s and Errett’s tour had them preaching at many stops.

On New Years Day, Campbell preached at Crawfordsville, visiting the home of S. M. Huston, who was still faithfully serving the Lord’s cause. They traveled from there to many cities, major and minor, finally returning back to Indianapolis. A powerful preacher by the name of D. S. Burnet joined them at Vincennes and carried on through the rest of their journey. Errett went back to Detroit, Michigan, where he had been preaching, holding a rather successful meeting in Ionia, despite the rising political upheaval. Traveling to Virginia to reunite with Campbell and the school’s fundraising efforts in mid-February 1861, he found little success amidst the war fervor.

Dispatches were passing from Washington D.C. to Fort Sumter by the hour, and the worst was being expected. The news of Anderson’s surrender of the Fort was followed by what could only be described as madness. Errett hastily returned to Detroit, and through every city, large or small, people were milling about in an outrage. Flags and banners streamed everywhere. Shouting and cheering was heard all over the nation.

On April 5, 1861, W. H. Hopson was feeling rather hopeful about the gospel meeting he was holding in Cincinnati, but the news of the fall of Fort Sumter arrived during the meeting. The streets began to fill with the frenzied populace. One of the elders of the congregation, R. M. Bishop, happened to be the Mayor of Cincinnati, and only a month earlier, he had entertained President-elect Lincoln on his way to Washington D.C. for the inauguration. Talking it over with great sadness and disappointment, they decided to cancel the rest of the gospel meeting.

In both North and South, members of the church joined their respective causes. Young men in brotherhood-run Colleges left to join the armies of either side. Reputable teachers were often granted officer status. Preachers of the gospel left their “good fight of faith” and their pulpits behind to fight the bloodiest war in American history.

In The North

Once the president of such a brotherhood-school (the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute in Hiram, Ohio), James A. Garfield petitioned the governor for an appointment. He was awarded the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and given permission to raise a regiment. He did just that with his own student body, forming the 42nd Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was soon given command of the entire regiment as a full Colonel.

Garfield’s regiment fought their first battle in Paintsville, Kentucky, proving victorious. From there, they joined the Union army of the not-yet-famous but well respected General Grant at Shiloh, Tennessee. Pushing the Confederates to Corinth, Mississippi, and heading east into northern Alabama, they set up temporary headquarters in Huntsville.

Garfield’s fame spread through the Union. He was recalled to Washington, assigned to be an aid to General Rosencrans at Murfreesboro, who was later defeated at Chickamauga. Garfield was then promoted to Brigadier General, but he soon resigned to become an Ohio Representative in Congress. Under Garfield, there were two hundred fifty boys from the school fighting in Company A of the 42nd Ohio Regiment, many of whom died on the field of battle one by one. Some lasted longer and rose in rank, but all were changed by the horrors they saw.

(Next week: “In the South”)

I sold this writing journal in my studio a year ago.

I think firsts are so important, first kiss, first birthdays, first house, etc. There is nothing like the first time. You just can’t recreate that feeling of a first time discovery or indulgence. I am very open to trying new things and I love to look at things in a new way. It’s called a beginners mind and it allows me to realize that every single moment carries something distinctive within it. You could say it’s kind of a Zen thing or child-like. The possibilities are endless when your in this state of mind. Although I am very open and love to try new things, MR. Java is not and does not. So every once in a while I feel it necessary to surprise him with something that he would never do if given the choice. Something totally spontaneous and maybe a little crazy. He usually resists and groans a bit in the beginning but we almost always end up having a great time. So for our anniversary I decided to do something a little unusual for him. Tonight we will embark on a ghost tour of Detroit. He and I and a couple of friends will board a bus along with 14 other brave souls, to several locations known to have paranormal activity. This is way out of the normal realm of things for us but thats what makes it perfect. He thinks we’re just going to dinner… he hee!

MR. Java has been way too into work lately and needs a diversion in the worst way. I can see it now- he will give me a squinty eyed glance and shake his head, as if to say, what have you gotten us into now- I love that look, it makes me smile.

They always make me smile!

Speaking of things that make me smile, I have to share something incredible with you. It’s a youtube video that is so worth a moment of your time. It took place in Chicago, the magnitude of so many people doing the same thing simultaneously, in perfect harmony, just blew me away. Keep an eye on Oprah and the total joy on her face. Notice the crazy girl in the front-she’s the only one dancing at first but then… The energy of this video is infectious- you just have to see/feel it for yourself! I got a feeling!!!

Isn’t that incredible? I would have loved to have been there! Like Oprah said it’s JOY Rising! My favorite part is the wave toward the end when everyone is touching the person next to them. I love the upbeat music of the Black-eyed Peas but the energy in the crowd is phenominal- if this can’t inspire world peace, nothing can. I have to confess something a little embarresing, this video made shed a tear because it was so beautiful!

The banks have been the ones benefitting most from free money via the Federal Government and U.S. taxpayers. Given 9.8% base unemployment and 17.0% comprehensive unemployment, it is a bit galling for ordinary Americans that these same institutions are making record profits and poised to hand out record bonuses. Detroit is one of the hardest hit cities with the base rate of unemployment a depression-era 17.1% that is the highest in the nation. People who have watched corporations hoover up the handouts are desperate for some relief. They are finally getting some (hat tip Andrew):

Thousands hoping to get applications for federal help on rent and utility bills turned Cobo Center into a chaotic scene today.

They came by foot, wheelchair, bicycle and car. About six left by ambulance after tensions rose and people were trampled, according to a paramedic on the scene. One unfortunate soul got his car booted.

Detroiters were trying to pick up 5,000 federal assistance applications from the city at Cobo because Detroit received nearly $15.2 million in federal dollars under the Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program, which is for temporary financial assistance and housing services to individuals and families who are homeless, or who would be homeless without this help.

People in wheelchairs and others using canes were being leaned on by people too weak to stand. Emergency medical technicians on the scene said they treated applicants who were injured during the rush to get inside the venue.

That’s what happens when a town full of broke people gets a whiff of free money, said Walter Williams, 51, who came before the sun to get an application and a shot at some federal assistance.

"This morning, I seen the curtain pulled back on the misery," he said. "People fighting over a line. People threatening to shoot each other. Is this what we’ve come to?"…

Yes, this is what we’ve come to.

Response had been so great that Detroit police and fire officials considered shutting down the process because of the volume of people.

Kelley Turcotte, a Detroit dishwasher, was near the end of the line around 10:30 a.m. today. The 27-year-old just had a son and said he is only squeaking by on his bills.

"I hope the government sees this and realizes the city needs a lot more help than they are giving," Turcotte said…

"This absolutely is representative of the struggling middle class in America," he said. "We’ve been betrayed by the government, Realtors and those who’ve got. The promise has been broken."

And you’re telling me this is not a depression?

Since Em and Slaughterhouse appearing together in the “Forever” video, the Internets have been on fire with all types of rumors of how and why that went down. Miss Info, attempts to make sense of it. Minya says:

That Slaughterhouse appearance in “Forever,” was indeed a non-verbal announcement of the contract negotiations going on behind the scenes. For the past month, both sides have been working towards bringing the group to the Shady label. And that the gathering of Em and the guys at the shoot, is the first of more collaborations to come.

For now, Eminem is working on Relapse II, in Detroit. Joe is working on The Great Escape.
In a city where liquor stores out number grocery stores 26:1, one group is making a difference. Locally grown vegetables delivered by truck, like the ice cream truck, to the poor neighborhoods in Detroit. Now children can buy an apple for 50 as the truck drives through the streets. A farmer’s market has been built on a vacant lot. Now the whole community is involved in growing and harvesting vegetables. The program is targeted at eating healthy and lower neighborhood obesity rates, which are some of the highest in the country. Michigan is now funding several other programs in the city!

The story of Terrance Dejuan McCoy and how he got out of his 1st date is a truly inspiring anecdote for men. We will no longer be forced to pay for dinner with a girl we don’t like. We won’t have to listen to their dumb stories. If we don’t like them, we’ll just leave them with the bill, and steal their fucking cars!

Terrance, a 23 year old dude, took this girl out for their first date at the very classy Buffalo Wild Wings in Detroit. She must have been really annoying or told him that she wasn’t going to put out because right as the bill came he pulled the old, “I left my wallet in the car” move. He then stole her car and never came back. What a ballsy move.

Police caught the man and charged him with “unlawfully taking a car”, being awesome, and making a girl cry.

If the majority of us don’t want what Obama is offering, then why do it? Mark Levin says the President is “doing it to capture more power and take more liberty from the American people.” This dissatisfaction is showing in Obama’s approval ratings as it comes down to 50%, lower than G.W.
Karl Rove discusses ”the shift in public opinion against Obama’s health care proposals and blasts members of Congress for writing off public protests as organized and planned. Karl casts these town halls in a positive light, calling them ‘an expression of American democracy.’” This is an excellent video: http://www.foxnews.com/search-results/m/25647969/town-hall-democracy.htm#q=karl+rove

The woes of Detroit are very much in the news these days. Negative stories about Detroit have become

The woes of Detroit are very much in the news these days. Negative stories about Detroit have become so common that one almost becomes numb to the news. But I was shocked recently when I read that all national grocery store chains have moved out of the city online.wsj.com/article/SB124510185111216455.html. No Safeway? No Kroger? None of the big names hang a sign in a major American city?

When I think of Detroit I think of cars and music. The cars I rode in when I was growing up came from Detroit. When my mom or dad turned on the radio we listened to music that came from Detroit. Back then Detroit represented the best cars and the best music in the world, adding to the culture of every American city and influencing people in cities abroad. I’ve still got LPs that Marvin Gaye, The Supremes and others recorded for Motown… but they’re down in the basement somewhere, replaced by CDs of the same albums that I’ve loaded onto my iPod. How things change.

My impression of Detroit back then was a city full of hustle and bustle: blue collar workers heading off to work in the big, imposing plants, white collar workers heading to the office buildings, and a great new musical talent being discovered on every block. Every Thanksgiving Day the parade would emanate from the Hudson’s department store building on Woodward Avenue and then the Lions would play the Packers at Tiger Stadium. The culture of Detroit touched us every day.

Fast forward to today. Detroit is little more than a 138 square mile afterthought. Two of the cities main employers, GM and Chrysler, are wards of the state. The biggest bank in the city moved its headquarters to Dallas a couple years ago (reuters.com/article/…SP/idUSN0616663520070306). The population dropped below 1 million decades ago (city-data.com/us-cities/The-Midwest/Detroit-Population-Profile.html). Unemployment and crime run rampant. Buildings stand vacant and vandalized. The Motown label has long since left the city and the “Motown Sound” is just a heartwarming memory.

I’m not here to pass judgment about why Detroit got to this point; there’s plenty of blame to go around. But I am interested in figuring out what’s next. Will a new culture come out of present-day Detroit, a place where something as basic as groceries are not offered by a national chain? Can something good happen in this city that positively affects the rest of the country?

It’s impossible to tell the future, but there are a few reasons for optimism. One is that the bursting of the housing bubble and the subsequent credit crisis has resulted in a New Normal for us all. We’re much more aware of our spending and “status” is coming not so much from displays of wealth anymore. In leading the revolution to a New Normal, Detroit is presently on the cutting edge as evidenced by the fact that Family Dollar has opened 25 of their discount stores in Detroit since 2003. Aldi, a discount grocer, has pronounced itself “very bullish” on Detroit, where they’ve been opening stores since 2001.

Another part of the New Normal is the desire to support local businesses. While big box stores dominate Detroit’s (and every other city’s) suburbs, people may find what they’re looking for at locally-owned and operated stores. One example is the local coffee shops that have sprung up in Detroit while Starbucks has nearly abandoned the city. Detroit’s Eastern Market is where everyone in the city and the suburbs go to get the freshest and most exotic foods. People even come across the Canadian border to shop there—and the history of the neighborhood where Eastern Market is located is as rich as anyplace in the Great Lakes region.

As sad as Detroit’s story has been in recent years, the city really does have so much to offer. Furthermore, the recent resurgence of cities like Baltimore, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh tell me that Detroit can re-emerge as a cultural hub. I hope that happens. I also hope to visit there and be a part of it.

Sydney-based Qantas has announced it will increase the number of flights on the Sydney-Singapore-London and Sydney-Los Angeles routes operated by its Airbus A380s.

More A380 Flights

Operating flight QF 031, the A380 will depart Kingsford Smith International Airport at 1625 hrs every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, landing at Singapore Changi International Airport at 2230 hrs before taking off again at 2359 hrs for London, where it arrives at Heathrow Airport at 0640 hrs the next morning.

By November 2009, Qantas will offer daily A380 flights to London and Los Angeles and will increase its Melbourne-Los Angeles A380 service to 3 times weekly. Since its introduction in October 2008, more than 200,000 Qantas passengers have flown onboard the giant aircraft, equipped with 14 First Class, 72 Business Class, 32 Premium Economy and 332 Economy Class seats.

Codeshares With Iberia And American Airlines

From 15 July 2009, Qantas will codeshare with Spain’s Iberia on its flights to Madrid from Frankfurt and London, offering passengers greater convenience when flying between Spain and Australia. The Spanish airline will in turn, place its own code for the first time on Qantas-operated services from Frankfurt and London to Sydney.

The new Iberia-operated services complement the Australian airline’s existing codeshares to Spain with Oneworld partner British Airways from London and offers an alternative routing via Germany. Qantas currently operate 35 services between Australia and Europe, connecting with 23 codeshare destinations.

In North America, Qantas will expand its existing codeshare agreement with American Airlines. Beginning 17 June 2009, the “QF” code will be placed on selected American Airlines-operated flights to Atlanta, Cincinnati, Detriot, Indianapolis, Memphis, Minneapolis, New Orleans and Tampa from its hubs at Chicago and Dallas.

Passengers flying to/from Australia can connect with the new flights via existing codeshare services with American Airlines from Los Angeles and San Francisco to Chicago and Dallas. With the new destinations, Qantas’ North American network now comprises of 36 cities in the USA and 6 Canadian destinations.

I was over at FWMJ when I saw this. Slum Village is one of the best things to happen in hip hop, I can always rely on them for some dope music. The style they have is unique and very organic, something which a lot of other hip hop groups fail accomplish. The mixtape features numerous songs from their catalogue with production by Black Milk, J Dilla, and Focus just to name a few. Download and enjoy because stuff like this doesn’t come around that often. Back-cover and track-list after the jump.

Black Milk talks about how his new track “Losing Out” on Tronic. It contains the same sample as one of Camron Giles songs. The exact song is “Lets Talk About It”, I feel Black does a better job than Cam’s people. He also says people sampling the same stuff is A. O. K. because it shows the creativity, and you don’t have control over what someone can sample so why fight it.
