It seems like a lot of people I know don’t like KISS. Because of this, I can’t help but

It seems like a lot of people I know don’t like KISS. Because of this, I can’t help but suspect that I may be surrounded by communist subversives. Of course it could be that I grew up with KISS (and Gene Simmons in particular) as a household name, being introduced to them by my uncle at a very young age. Or it could be that most people I know for some reason don’t think that the following things are awesome: blood, fire, makeup, battle-axe shaped bass guitars and catchier-than-herpes nuggets of 3 minute, 3 chord pop rock.

I’m guessing it has something to do with the later. KISS are not a heavy metal band, or even a hard rock band. KISS is a pop band. A mindless sugar-rush of sweet, tasty choruses and juvenile lyrics wrapped in the aforementioned fire, blood and makeup. Once you have that in mind, it might make it easier to appreciate them for what they really are. ”Calling Dr. Love”, “God of Thunder” and “Deuce” aren’t fucking high art or rocket science, they are the musical equivalent of a bag of Halloween candy. Anyone assessing KISS based on any other criteria needs to get it the fuck together.

(above: “God of Thunder” my favorite KISS song and the closest they ever got to heavy metal in my opinion)

And although KISS might not be a heavy metal band by any stretch of the imagination, they are arguably the second most important band to influence heavy metal after Black Sabbath. Their theatricality/imagery, catchiness and swagger, (not to mention the invention of what would later come to be known as corpsepaint) had wide-ranging and lasting effects on everyone from GWAR to the late Dimebag Darrell to the black metal scene in its entirety. Bands ranging from White Zombie (“God of Thunder”) to the Melvins (“Goin’ Blind”) to Nirvana (“Do You Love Me”) and beyond have all seen fit to cover tunes penned by the grease-paint adorned quartet. And let us not forget about the monumentally atrocious Kiss My Ass tribute album, featuring such artists as Garth Brooks (or is that Chris Gaines) and uh… The Gin Blossoms.

(above: “I Was Made for Lovin’ You” aka KISS’ “disco song” and also one of their most successful hits. Hey, I dislike disco as much as the next metalhead (except for the Bee Gees, those dudes were hella sick), but try to tell me this isn’t a catchy lil’ fucker of a song.)

Of course along with KISS’ imagery came accusations of satanism and other such nonsense. According to some members of the god squad, KISS was an acronym for Knights In Satan’s Service. I’m not quite sure how anyone could listen to “I Was Made For Lovin’ You” or “Hard Luck Woman” and get satanism out of it. Or maybe anyone that wears face paint is automatically a satanist in the eyes of jesus freaks. Watch out for Bozo kids, he’s going to see that you roast in the fiery pits of hell! But I digress, the “controversy” brought on in typical fashion by the lord’s most ignorant followers only helped make KISS that much more appealing to rebellious youth, even if they were really singing about sex instead of satan. Come to think of it, that was probably even more appealing.

So maybe now those of you that have previously scoffed at my enjoyment of KISS have a better understanding of my reasons for being a fan. Sure, they have made numerous missteps, such as taking the makeup off, firing Peter Criss and Ace Frehley and releasing tons of clunkers in the song department (I cannot comment on their latest album as yet), not to mention basically becoming nothing more than money-grubbing media/merchandising whores. But again, KISS is a pop band, so things like artistic integrity and cred should be viewed as non-issues. Fun haters be damned, I’ll be cranking “Cold Gin” while you’re bitching about what a terrible band KISS is for all of the wrong reasons. KISS my ass, indeed.

Rezad conmigo, hermanos.

One of the most effective tennis serves you can hit is what is sometimes known as the “can ope

One of the most effective tennis serves you can hit is what is sometimes known as the “can opener”.

You see Federer and Nadal hit this serve a lot of the time.

This is when you slice the serve out wide and drag your opponent out of the tennis court.

It can often result in an ace or error but can also leave your opponent so far out of court that even if they do return the ball you have the whole court at your mercy to take advantage of.

But, so many people still struggle to hit it well.

Well, try this.

If you are a right hander hitting it from the deuce (right) court then just move your right foot to the right a touch (towards the right tramline) when you are setting up (I am obviously assuming your right foot is normally further from the right tramline than your left foot in your normal service stance).

This will line your body up more towards your target and make hitting that area by the opposite tramline sooooo much easier.

Note for all you leftys, just reverse the above instruction i.e. serve from the left etc.

For those of you worried about telegraphing the serve to the opponent – don’t worry.

If you are unable to hit the wide serve from the “normal” stance, you AND your opponent are unlikely to be at the level where reading and taking advantage of serves are a natural part of the game.

PLUS!!!

If you hit it well enough, it is still a difficult serve to deal with.

I saw Pete Sampras (who Federer copied) serve every ad serve (from the left) at the French Open, Roland Garros from wide out towards the tramline with kick.

Everybody knew where most of the serves were going but like I said earlier if you hit these wide serves well the worst that can happen is that you end up with an empty court to play into on the next shot.

He lost in the Semi-Finals!!

I also saw him serve nearly every serve in the Australian Open final against Thomas Muster (a lefty) as a can opener from the right (deuce) court.

He Won!!

Listen, it’s really important for right handers to have this serve against a lefty.

I say this because it seems that all leftys have this serve when they play us right handers……dammned leftys

Start working on it today!!

P.S. if you are a lefty and don’t have it as part of your service arsenal…………get it going

I had the distinct honor and pleasure of sitting down with the one and only Marian Seldes after seeing her in “Persistence of Memory” this past Sunday. Miss Seldes has been delighting audiences for more than six decades from theatre to film to radio and television. She made her Broadway debut in 1947 alongside Judith Anderson in “Medea.” Miss Seldes has been nominated for four Tony Awards and won in 1967 for her role in Edward Albee’s “A Delicate Balance.” She also starred with Angela Lansbury in Terrance McNally’s “Deuce” in 2007. In 1996, Miss Seldes was elected into the Theater Hall of Fame. Her film credits include “Leatherheads,” “August Rush,” and “The Visitor.” She is also the author of two books: a novel, “Time Together” and her memoir, “The Bright Lights.” Being a performer is a true labor of love for Miss Seldes and is evident in the way her face lights up when talking about her life in front of an audience. That love and enthusiasm was demonstrated time and time again while interviewing her. Below is my unique and privileged experience:

1. Who inspired you to become a performer? Seeing theatre and watching other actors on stage.

2. What has been your best and worst experience in a show? I have had no worst experience. The best experience is when the play goes beautifully and the audience loves it.

3. Who is the one person you haven’t worked with that you would like to? I feel so lucky to have worked with so many great people already.

4. Out of all the people you’ve worked with, who did you learn the most from? I learned the most from when I was young, but if I had to chose, I would say Katherine Cornell and Judith Anderson.

5. What is the best advice you’ve given someone, but not taken for yourself? I don’t advise people. I don’t believe that just because you are a teacher, you are given the right to counsel others.

6. Is there ever a time you thought about quitting? Never! Why would I quit?

7. Favorite pastime? I like to read, but I don’t consider that a pastime because a pastime is something that passes time and I don’t feel that one should read just to pass time.

8. Best holiday gift ever? Hugs from my grandchildren.

9. Superman or Wonder Woman? I don’t know because I don’t think there are men and women really like that in the world.

10. Favorite Play/Musical? They are all my favorite.

11. What is it about the color purple that makes it your favorite color? I just like the look and fit of it and I feel comfortable in it.

With Planetary Assault Systems (PAS) highly experimental album ‘Temporary Suspension’ released on Ostgut, there were no doubt about a remix 12″ following it later on.

As the Ostgut crew reaches out to new artists to come and play in their club, new remixers joins in and create a new take on already established Berghain performers. Al Tourettes and Appleblim takes the heavy ‘X Speaks To X’ from the album, and transform it into something that is very hard to narrow down into a genre – it’s highly influenced and very rough, but at the same time remotely close to dubstep and techno. This remix is very impressive in almost every regard; being very unexpected as a remix on PAS, Appleblim and Al Tourettes takes ‘X Speak To X’ into a new dimension.

Deuce on the other hand bring their raw and extremely reduced sound into PAS original of ‘Hold It’ – a standout track on the album. With only one release as a duo, Deuce manage to fuse early days techno with the raw aspects of the present which is clearly the case with this remix. Featuring just a few elements from the original, they put in their own groove with a steady beat and manage to create a very sublime but also displaying a powerful, distinct and fresh sound.

‘Remixes’ is out in late November.

So I came into my room today to work on some weekly paperwork and someone came in and drew a steaming pile of shit on my whiteboard! Immediately I knew it had to be done in the morning before I came in. Because of this I knew it wasn’t any of the staff that I work with. That leaves either the teachers or students at my school. If you look closely at the pile of shit, it is clearly not drawn by a little child.. unless they are talented shit artists. So that leaves a teacher… but who?! And why?! Is my program shitty? Do I smell like shit? Or is this a new type of guerilla teacher humor of leaving fecal drawings in someone’s room. Either way… impressive. I think I’ll conduct a survey among teachers and young artists to draw piles of crap so I can narrow down who it might be.

You got me. You got me where it hurts.

Regardless, I really can’t figure what I’d want to have. First thing that comes to mind is homemade fried chicken mashed papas and mac & cheese. Or maybe red velvet cake. or red velvet cheesecake. and to drink a dr pepper or mountain dew blue?. . . idk. Normally I eat based on what I feel like having. So what if I’m in the mood for Kung Pao Chickens. Could they hooked that up? either way I think it’d be between fried chickens, red velvet cheesecake or chinese foods.

Yeah, you know what I’m talking about! That’s how you always try to fly. I think he just died recently.

really?

Yeah…I think it was a ramp strike.

(note: subsequent research reveals that Ron Popeil is not actually dead at print date)

This is the second year that Fort Wayne guitar hero Kenny Taylor has celebrated Chuck Berry’s birthday by performing “The Great Twenty-Eight” (in order, in the original keys!) at the Latch String Inn. Kenny was joined by Patrick Borton on bass, Mitch Frazier on guitar, Jamie Simon on drums and Paul Stewart on keys, and they sounded great! I missed last year’s event, but this year I was there with the 5dMkII and a vintage Pentax Super-Takumar 50mm/1.4 M42 screw mount lens (c.1965-1971 — perfect for this show!). It’s manual focus (and aperture) all the way of course, but the focus ring feels so much more substantial than modern auto-focus lenses. This in combination with the EG-S matte focusing screen made the camera operate almost like an old Spotmatic. These images were shot at or around ISO 5000 and processed in Adobe Lightroom:

Although I personally don’t believe drug and alcohol addiction is hereditary. I also suffer from one of those post-concussion syndromes. Where I can have memory loss or seizures and/or possibly suicidal thoughts. Cuz I’ve 5+ concussions (sports ftw). I more than likely will get diabetes and/or a heart condition if the head trauma doesn’t get me first. I won’t change my lifestyle of eating habits unless they cut my feets off . That would supremely suck. I’d have to give all my shoes to my little bro. Maybe they can upgrade my feet to rollerblades (word to dallas penn). Basically all this is saying is. FUCK EVERYTHING! cuz I’ma do what ever I want in this short life I have. cuz my body is already fucked the fuck up and will prolly get worserer

I did my best to design this poster “without” Shepard Fairey’s style of art in mind, it would’ve been to cliche and forced. This design’s function is to capture the attention of passers-by in an outside shopping area. Bold clean fonts allow you to process information quicker. Last draft before the final, I misspelled his last name..lol

This is the version just before the final.. Had to make one small (punctuation/grammer) adjustment, let’s see if you can figure out what it was..

Google.com Talking about poop taught me about tennis. It all started with my girlfriend complaining

Google.com

Talking about poop taught me about tennis.

It all started with my girlfriend complaining that a bathroom at a Chinese restaurant smelled like poop.

Then, we started talking about pooping.

“If I say I need to poop, it sounds too fruity,” I told her. “But if I say I need to take a s***, then it’s impolite.”

My girlfriend said that I could say that I need to take a dumping.

She also said a friend of hers had a sign in her bathroom saying “no dump.”

More poop vocabulary

Excited that I had new vocabulary to blog about, I told one of my friends about what I had learned.

“Oh, drop a deuce is another one,” he said. “Deuce means two; so you are going to do number two.”

How pooping relates to tennis

Talking to my girlfriend about the drop-a-deuce expression, I realized that in tennis we also use the word deuce.

When the score in a game is 40-40, we say it’s deuce. That means you have to win two points in a row to win the game.

Deuce.

It all made sense.

Polite way of addressing the issue

I told my girlfriend that it’s better to say, “I need to use the bathroom.”

“If I take too long,” I explained. “You know what I’m doing.”
